The surveillance advertising to financial fraud pipeline

It's hard to be your authentic self while you're under surveillance. For that reason alone, the rise and rise of the surveillance industry – an unholy public-private partnership between cops, spooks, and ad-tech scum – is a plague on humanity and a scourge on the Earth:

But beyond the psychic damage surveillance metes out, there are immediate, concrete ways in which surveillance brings us to harm. Ad-tech follows us into abortion clinics and then sells the info to the cops back home in the forced birth states run by Handmaid's Tale LARPers:

The commercial surveillance industry fuels SWATting, where sociopaths who don't like your internet opinions or are steamed because you beat them at Call of Duty trick the cops into thinking that there's an "active shooter" at your house, provoking the kind of American policing autoimmune reaction that can get you killed:

There's just a lot of ways that compiling deep, nonconsensual, population-scale surveillance dossiers can bring safety and financial harm to the unwilling subjects of our experiment in digital spying. The wave of "business email compromises" (the infosec term for impersonating your boss to you and tricking you into cleaning out the company bank accounts)? They start with spear phishing, a phishing attack that uses personal information – bought from commercial sources or ganked from leaks – to craft a virtual Big Store con:

It's not just spear-phishers. There are plenty of financial predators who run petty grifts – stock swindles, identity theft, and other petty cons. These scams depend on commercial surveillance, both to target victims (e.g. buying Facebook ads targeting people struggling with medical debt and worried about losing their homes) and to run the con itself (by getting the information needed to pull of a successful identity theft).

In "Consumer Surveillance and Financial Fraud," a new National Bureau of Academic Research paper, a trio of business-school profs – Bo Bian (UBC), Michaela Pagel (WUSTL) and Huan Tang (Wharton) quantify the commercial surveillance industry's relationship to finance crimes:

The authors take advantage of a time-series of ZIP-code-accurate fraud complaint data from the Consumer Finance Protection Board, supplemented by complaints from the FTC, along with Apple's rollout of App Tracking Transparency, a change to app-based tracking on Apple mobile devices that turned of third-party commercial surveillance unless users explicitly opted into being spied on. More than 96% of Apple users blocked spying:

In other words, they were able to see, neighborhood by neighborhood, what happened to financial fraud when users were able to block commercial surveillance.

What happened is, fraud plunged. Deprived of the raw material for committing fraud, criminals were substantially hampered in their ability to steal from internet users.

While this is something that security professionals have understood for years, this study puts some empirical spine into the large corpus of qualitative accounts of the surveillance-to-fraud pipeline.

As the authors note in their conclusion, this analysis is timely. Google has just rolled out a new surveillance system, the deceptively named "Privacy Sandbox," that every Chrome user is being opted in to unless they find and untick three separate preference tickboxes. Google has spun, lied and bullied Privacy Sandbox into existence; whenever this program draws enough fire, they rename it (it used to be called FLoC). But as the Apple example showed, no one wants to be spied on – that's why Google makes you find and untick three boxes to opt out of this new form of surveillance.

There is no consensual basis for mass commercial surveillance. The story that "people don't mind ads so long as they're relevant" is a lie. But even if it was true, it wouldn't be enough, because beyond the harms to being our authentic selves that come from the knowledge that we're being observed, surveillance data is a crucial ingredient for all kinds of crime, harassment, and deception.

We can't rely on companies to spy on us responsibly. Apple may have blocked third-party app spying, but they effect nonconsensual, continuous surveillance of every Apple mobile device user, and lie about it:

That's why we should ban commercial surveillance. We should outlaw surveillance advertising. Period:

Contrary to the claims of surveillance profiteers, this wouldn't reduce the income to ad-supported news and other media – it would increase their revenues, by letting them place ads without relying on the surveillance troves assembled by the Google/Meta ad-tech duopoly, who take the majority of ad-revenue:

We're 30 years into the commercial surveillance pandemic and Congress still hasn't passed a federal privacy law with a private right of action. But other agencies aren't waiting for Congress. The FTC and DoJ Antitrust Divsision have proposed new merger guidelines that allow regulators to consider privacy harms when companies merge:

Think here of how Google devoured Fitbit and claimed massive troves of extremely personal data, much of which was collected because employers required workers to wear biometric trackers to get the best deal on health care:

Companies can't be trusted to collect, retain or use our personal data wisely. The right "balance" here is to simply ban that collection, without an explicit opt-in. The way this should work is that companies can't collect private data unless users hunt down and untick three "don't spy on me" boxes. After all, that's the standard that Google has set.

the batboys as spy movies

Charlie’s Angels is by faaaaaaar Dick’s favorite spy movie. And he isn’t only a fan of the movies, having the dvd set for all the seasons of the  70’s show. Just don’t mention to him the 2019 atrocity. Some may say they’re brainless movies, but there’s much more to it than the lack of a deep plot. It is about the style, and the action, and over all, the fun. He believes those movies changed the landscape of cinema of the time, bringing back the hard-hitting action that had been lacking in films from that period, and did it  in the most entertaining way possible, with iconic fighting scenes he often tries to reproduce while in his own patrolling duties. Also… It’s sexy, okay? The whole vibe of the movie is sexy, and Dick fights just as good as he fights sexy. This movie is an iconic piece of cinema, of culture,  of the 2000s and he’ll die on that hill. 

When it comes to spy movies, Jason doesn’t strive far from his own older brother’s preferences,  choosing the more eccentric and fun kinds over the sometimes too serious and boring traditional movies. It’s honestly a break from his own, very often, broody self. Even he needs a break from that once in a while. Watching Kingsman gave him thrills he hadn’t got in a while, sitting on the tip of his chair at that fight scene at the church. It's gritty, bloody and dirty (in more ways than one), with tons of fun dialogue and situations he just hoped would happen to him at least once *hello, princess Tilde*. And even with all of that, the spy characters are not missing the classic polished,  fancy feeling of classic spy movies. 

Not your typical spy movie, per se, but Tim really loves The Imitation Game. The whole amazing premise of the movie revolves around an apparently unbreakable code that, if cracked, could win England the war, in a game of cat and mouse versus a powerful - nazi - enemy. He admires the brilliancy of Alan Turing, one of his actual real life heroes, for not only cracking the code and but also realizing that his job went much further than just that: they can’t let the enemy know they have the upper hand, so they have to sacrifice some things, some people, so they can save a much greater number. It feels too much like real life to him. And of course, Tim solved that problem by himself way before any character in the movie did.

Damian believes the best of espionage is found in  old spy movies, and no better example than the earlier 007 ones. Not that he thinks the recent ones are bad, but the classics are always classics, and they feel much better written, filmed, and portrayed in general, than the newer ones. He likes the gadgets, and how things are less about high tech, and much more about hands-on skills and combat. The  Sean Connery era is his absolute favorite, with the best movie, in his not so humble opinion,  being a toss of Goldfinger and From Russia With Love. Moreover, he loves that he gets to watch those movies with Alfred and his father, it’s like their own bonding, no pun intended, family thing.

Alexa in crisis

Amazon is going through the biggest layoffs in the company's history right now, with a plan to eliminate some 10,000 jobs. One of the areas hit hardest is the Amazon Alexa voice assistant unit, which is apparently falling out of favor at the e-commerce giant. That's according to a report from Business Insider, which details "the swift downfall of the voice assistant and Amazon's larger hardware division."

Alexa has been around for 10 years and has been a trailblazing voice assistant that was copied quite a bit by Google and Apple. Alexa never managed to create an ongoing revenue stream, though, so Alexa doesn't really make any money. The Alexa division is part of the "Worldwide Digital" group along with Amazon Prime video, and Business Insider says that division lost $3 billion in just the first quarter of 2022, with "the vast majority" of the losses blamed on Alexa. That is apparently double the losses of any other division, and the report says the hardware team is on pace to lose $10 billion this year. It sounds like Amazon is tired of burning through all that cash.

A division in crisis

The BI report spoke with "a dozen current and former employees on the company's hardware team," who described "a division in crisis." Just about every plan to monetize Alexa has failed, with one former employee calling Alexa "a colossal failure of imagination," and "a wasted opportunity." This month's layoffs are the end result of years of trying to turn things around. Alexa was given a huge runway at the company, back when it was reportedly the "pet project" of former CEO Jeff Bezos. An all-hands crisis meeting took place in 2019 to try to turn the monetization problem around, but that was fruitless. By late 2019, Alexa saw a hiring freeze, and Bezos started to lose interest in the project around 2020. Of course, Amazon now has an entirely new CEO, Andy Jassy, who apparently isn't as interested in protecting Alexa.

The report says that while Alexa's Echo line is among the "best-selling items on Amazon, most of the devices sold at cost." One internal document described the business model by saying, "We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices."

That plan never really materialized, though. It's not like Alexa plays ad breaks after you use it, so the hope was that people would buy things on Amazon via their voice. Not many people want to trust an AI with spending their money or buying an item without seeing a picture or reading reviews. The report says that by year four of the Alexa experiment, "Alexa was getting a billion interactions a week, but most of those conversations were trivial commands to play music or ask about the weather." Those questions aren't monetizable....

Fragile Snowman (Remastered)

Season 3 Featured on: Inspector Gunner 2 With Critic

Following up directly on yesterday's post, one of the most notable events that happened during Season 3, one that was covered with a lot of love by the SiIvaGunner team in MAGFest 2019: SiIvaGunner Presents - High Quality Ripping, was the Nostalgia Critic takeover. Somehow, despite running the blog for half a year's time at this point, I still haven't ever gotten to touch on this event, despite being one of the more fondly remembered parts of the Season. And, well, there IS kind of a reason for that?

See, what initially started as an event celebrating old YouTube reviewers in general (hence Inspector Gadget's presence during it and in the album), transitioned into a purely-Nostalgia Critic event - but rather than celebrating Doug Walker's legacy in particular, the takeover took a different approach. Playing on Walker's gimmick as a reviewer in particular, the event was focused specifically on being a "nostalgia"-event - in other words, aiming to specifically bring us in the audience back to the days of Season 1 through every rip uploaded. This theme wasn't quite as...immediately apparent as many other takeovers, be it with rips like Totally Shaaking Out Right Now in the Harlem Shakeover, or Fell From a High Place (Reprise) during the Minecraft music event. Because while those events pretty radically changed to a core theme, this nostalgia-themed event instead saw the channel return to a status quo it once had - reuploads of several prior-lost Season 1 rips, new rips that were intentionally simplistic and often off-key, and an overall focus on the kinds of jokes that were all the rage in Season 1.

It was a genuinely really fun time, yet it was simultaneously hard to think of a fitting rip to represent it all with - in my eyes, it's one of those events that only truly worked in the moment, surrounded by all these rips that formed a cohesive whole. But Fragile Snowman (Remastered) is as close as it gets, I think - a loving remake of a true classic of Season 1. I've talked before of just how much I love it when rips of all sorts get dug back up for another shot at live with Violet Snow Memories from earlier this year, and this event was really the first time that we ever got a concentrated dose of that feeling throughout an entire takeover - and despite the rip of today's post only being two years old at that point, the nostalgia for it had already set in for me.

As described by Chaze the Chat in the aforementioned MAGFest panel, a big part of the fun with Season 1 was its sense of...spontaneousness, that you never really knew what to expect due to there simply not being much of any expectations set up by prior channel history in the first place. And as a result, we got a lot of rips much like the original Fragile Snowman - a mashup between Snowman as featured in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Fragile by Tech N9ne. There's a lot of rips like this even today, mashing up more chill video game music with hip-hop music that doesn't necessarily have much memetic quality, and while a lot of them can slip through the cracks of the SiIvaGunner audience, Fragile Snowman really did stick - enough to warrant two remasters made of it, with Fragile Snowman (Remastered) being the final stop the rip's made thus far.

There's so many small things fixed and tweaked in this final remastered version, yet it still sounds exactly as you'd imagine a mashup between the two songs to sound - which is, really, the best tell for it being an excellent remaster. The Nostalgia Critic takeover, while less bombastic and loud than many other events, was one that most every SiIvaGunner fan loved specifically because it focused on something we were ALL fans of - SiIvaGunner itself - and reminded us of just how far we'd come in just two short years. All these years later, there was indeed another event somewhat similar to this Nostalgia Critic takeover that happened just recently in Season 7, but...that's a story for another time.

Hi! Idc I love talking about my gadgets 💕 I have jlab air icon buds and Anker soundcore Q35s that are over-ear. I love them both, battery life on them is excellent, sound quality is good for the price range (jlabs are around $60 and Soundcore around $100) I'm not an audiophile and I like my headphones on the bass-ier side I think. I feel very cute walking around town in my Soundcore Q35s, they're like a frosty rose gold color + the noise cancelling mode is excellent. My only complaint w the Q35s is that they have a mechanism to pause when you take them off and I think long hair touching them can trip that sensor so sometimes they just randomly pause. I have had my Jlab air jcons since Christmas 2019 and use them like every single day. They made me totally fall in love with Bluetooth earbuds, they're the best for cleaning the house

Zerada Adust of the Las Vegas Strip (The Gap Years Part 12)

I'm definitely jumping through time in a far more disorganized way than a properly paced thing should, but I never said this was going to be good. It's going to be, and that's all.

In the 1950s, tourists would come to Las Vegas to see the clouds of the nuclear bombs being tested a hundred miles to the northwest. The city wasn’t really known for gambling then, and the only thing most of the tourists were betting was their lives against the nuclear fallout. Of course, back then there was lead in gasoline and no seatbelts in cars, so safety was always relative.

The United States government stopped atmospheric testing in 1962, though they’d keep producing bigger and bigger bombs for years. In the half-century since, fallout has drifted over the city exactly once; in 2009 when the Excalibur Project was destroyed by a team of elves wearing that familiar neon-lined armor. It wasn’t a situation like Chernobyl, but the echoes of that disaster are still in the pavement. Sierra’s gadget ticks quickly as the group stands by the New York New York casino. If someone is watching them, they have no way of knowing.

To be honest, even without that much radiation, The Strip still feels it’s going to give her cancer. It has the flashing lights of a science fiction nightmare combined with the noise of a thousand advertisements. Everything smells like cigarette smoke and car exhaust and even the sunset can’t compare to the colors on the signs and walls. That being said, she might be a bit more on edge than usual. Yesterday, she was shot in the neck with something that Brian keeps describing as an arrow. She also hit her head -hard- on the way down. Was she cursed now? Concussed? Who knows, honestly. She can feel the blood pulsing in her neck where she was shot and she swears she’s hearing things that aren’t there. Her steady mechanic’s hands drift against her will. Marin doesn’t know how to fix it.

What else has happened? Well, Marin finally read that casualty list. Apparently it’s short this time, but his parents are still dead. So are Zerada’s parents. The thing that really shook Marin up though was one of the killers. Apparently several guards and a noble were killed by a woman named Devana Marolak, despite the fact that Devana was supposed to be on his side. Clay stated the obvious -she must have turned traitor- but Marin refused to believe it. The high nobility live for their storied bloodlines. She wouldn’t betray her family like that. Well, she’s a problem for another time.

They’re standing in front of the fifty foot tall statue of something almost like the Statue of Liberty. The area is more of a plaza for once. It was over a hundred degrees Fahrenheit today (she still thinks that way, despite her best efforts to use Celsius) and a good part of the strip is barren sidewalk. You aren’t supposed to walk outside in Vegas. Any time spent where you can see the sun is time where you aren’t losing track of reality. Sierra guesses that this place is close enough to a casino that it’s profitable to hang around.

“It’s sunset. She should be here.” Marin’s recovered fully from their little car chase. He’s explained again that the nobility are fragile, and that he just needed to sleep it off. He’s also fidgeting and nervous and put on eyeliner this morning so…

“Or, this whole thing was a trap,” Clay replies, unhelpfully cynical as always.

Sierra’s tired of it. “Pretty stupid trap, unless they want to give us cancer first”.

“Hey, we don’t know what that magic arrow did”.

A patch of light moves on the ground in front of their feet. It looks like the reflection off of a phone, and Sierra looks around to see if anyone is moving theirs. No one. She follows the light up and behind them to the torch of the replica statue. Marin’s face lights up (no, not literally this time).

“Of course she’s up there! We’d always…” he laughs. “I’ll be back in a few minutes. Wait here,”

Marin disappears with a flash of green. Once he’s out of earshot, Clay shakes his head.

“So our only hope is Marin’s girlfriend?”

It seems like it is.

“Are they even dating? He keeps calling her ‘his betrothed’ which is a different thing” Brian replies.

“Are elves even, like… what’s the word for only having one spouse?” she asks.

“Monogamous?”

“Yeah, that”. To be honest, humans aren’t always monogamous either. She has two step siblings to prove it.

“I don’t know. Ask him”. Brian shrugs as if he doesn’t care, but everyone knows he’s obsessed with all that cultural stuff.

They quietly discuss. Brian mentions that Marin’s been translating everything into English and trying to not offend them, and that they really can’t be sure of anything because of it. The two of them pester him for being an annoying future English major and decide to ignore it.

After a few minutes, Marin reappears with a woman in an orange dress on his arm. She’s holding the cheap carnival fox under the other, and they’re both smiling like maniacs. She is only the second elf they’ve seen outside of combat.

Marin is an elf prince, but he doesn’t look like it. Ignore the pointed ears and he looks pretty unremarkable. Zerada though? She would be mistaken for a goddess if she showed up in Ancient Greece. They’re in Vegas instead, so Sierra invents other comparisons. She looks like a supermodel. She looks like what the media wants her and her mother to be. She is all of this while holding a stuffed animal.

Zerada looks about their age, so she must be nearly a hundred. She stands taller than Marin, but only while wearing four-inch heeled boots. Zerada throws her dark flowing hair over her shoulders when she laughs and her practically glowing skin is somewhere between suntanned and bronze. Sierra made a comment a few days ago about the Genus Adust symbol (a burnt-orange fox) being a cliche for a woman, but it fits. Her ears are sharp and pointed, and there’s a mischievous spark in her amber eyes. This is a smart, smart woman, but women are never allowed to just be smart. Zerada is both smart and drop-dead gorgeous, which means she’ll only ever be cunning and dangerous. Foxy. Then again, she’s an elf princess who survived a coup. Maybe Sierra should wait a second before deciding that she isn’t a threat.

The two speak in an elven language for a moment, but Zerada switches to English.

“So I hear you’ve all had quite the adventure?” Her voice is low and playful. It’s exactly what she’d expect from a stereotypical vixen. Considering how the elf is from another planet (parallel dimension. whatever) she’s definitely playing into it on purpose. It unsettles Sierra, who won’t touch that sort of behavior with a ten foot pole.

“You could say that,” Clay replies, deadpan.

“How’s Mari been treating you?” She looks at Sierra and grimaces. “Life and death, that is quite the spell. I’ll get you all some rooms and…”

Mari? His nickname is Mari?

“I’m sorry, but you are Zerada, right?” Brian asks.

“Yes! My name is Zerada Adust. It’s a pleasure to meet the humans who have kept this idiot alive. And you all are?”

Marin elbows her. She puts a hand on his head and pushes him away. They all introduce themselves.

Zerada raises her eyebrows in exaggerated surprise “Those are some familiar names”.

They speak in elvish again.

“It isn’t nice to talk about people when they’re in the room,” Clay says firmly.

“I was just telling Mari that the three of you are impressive companions”. She looks at each of them in turn. “The favorite child of the world’s most interesting tech magnate, the overlooked son of the California governor, and well, I don’t exactly recognize you…”

She stares at Clay. They’re about the same height and neither one looks away for a long moment, but he backs down first. “A lot of people in Vegas are desperate. Addiction, medical debt… people come here to die. Your father is part of the reason why”.

He straightens his shoulders and glares back at her, but the woman keeps talking. “You aren’t his heir, or part of his appearances. An exotic pet, then? I’d say seen and not heard, but I haven’t seen you either”.

Clay starts to say something, but is cut off. “Not that? Not good at doing tricks?”

“You don’t get to say anything about me, princess”.

“I do, actually. I don’t play by the rules either, but I suppose I got the last laugh.” She bares her teeth. “I’m here and alive, after all. Daddy isn’t”.

Sierra has really never seen Clay outplayed by anyone, especially not someone holding a toy fox. “I’m not interested in women,” he replies, which is as good a response as any.

“Oh? Hm”.

There’s a beat of silence. Then Sierra starts laughing.

“Really? Flirting with my companion?” Marin has his own exaggerated look of shock.

Zerada lifts her hands in surrender. “Hey, you had a crush on my brother”.

Marin smiles awkwardly, but then they both go silent.

“Jezero is still alive,” he says. “He’s not on the list”. Zerada replies that she’s already seen it. It’s not clear to Sierra if the elves are happy about this or not.

Whatever the hell that was, it’s over now. Zerada walks them up the Las Vegas Strip towards the hotel where she’s rented a huge suite under one of a dozen fake names. Her tall boots clack against the sidewalk while Marin’s footsteps are silent.

“So we’re counting on a bunch of drunk, magic, gamblers to protect us?” she replies.

Zerada turns back and rolls her eyes. “Please. Why would we gamble? There’s better games to play”.

That’s when the elf starts talking about herself. She’s spent four months in Vegas, but most of the past decade in all the cities, islands, and exclaves where the world’s rich and powerful waste their money. She’s fluent in English, Mandarin, and Arabic, as well as Portuguese (which is her favorite, and shockingly useful where she travels). Zerada is a shameless thrill seeker and gifted at charms and mental spells. There isn’t a criminal underground she doesn’t have friends in, or a casino she hasn’t robbed. Zerada makes a single quip about her body count without confirming what she’s counting, and both options make perfect sense. This woman is a femme fatale straight out of James Bond, minus any chance of dying for some man’s character development. If anything, Marin is the trophy spouse, and he seems okay with it.

Zerada changes her room every few weeks to avoid suspicion, and she’s currently staying at Caesars Palace purely for the pun. Marin and Zerada speak for a long time in elvish about something that leaves both of them doubled over laughing before Marin stalks off to buy the party a two bedroom suite. (Zerada insists they stay somewhere nice for once after a week on the road).

And the room is nice. Her father would probably buy out the whole building if he were here, but he isn’t, so the three rich kids sit awkwardly in the ‘living room’, because yes, this hotel room has a living room in it. The truth is, this is what they were trying to get away from. Staying in a room with a wet bar feels wrong when they were all nearly dragged off to imprisonment and death yesterday, and when the future is sure to be worse. The side of her neck is still glowing very scary red in the mirror, and Zerada didn’t do anything about it despite her also very scary reaction to it. She slunk back to her own room, and Marin followed… so they’re not going to interrupt. It’s fine. Sierra isn’t cursed. She’ll be fine.

They sit in silence.

Brian drinks from a can of soda. “So what does everyone think she meant about there being better games to play?”

“Politics, probably. She’s a noblewoman. I wouldn’t be shocked if they’re pulling strings everywhere”. Clay responds as if elves manipulating everything was too boring to focus on.

“So there’s a secret society of elves puppeteering everyone in Vegas and we’re okay with this?” Sierra says.

Brian gives her a movie star smile. “We don’t have much of a choice, do we?”

“We’re trying to save the world, Brian”.

They pause for a moment. Clay sighs.

“Please do not tell me you have a crush on Marin’s girlfriend. She is not nice. No one like that is ever nice”.

He takes a very long and conspicuous drink from his soda. “You’re nice, and you like politics and lying”.

“You dumb blond. That’s not what I mean!” He grabs a pillow and throws it.

Well, there’s only one thing to do now. Who says that the heroes can’t act like idiots sometimes? Brian’s certainly going to, so she picks up a pillow.

Zerada and Marin’s relationship status is a secret third thing! Imagine the most complicated on-again-off-again relationship you heard about in high school, and then consider that they’ve been friends for eighty years, and are societally expected to have 2.5 children or whatever the average noble birth rate is.

I do not know how to write, or fully understand, romance. I guess I'll figure it out because Brian making a very bad decision is a central part of his character arc, and also crucial for the plot.

Sean Connery's own 'James Bond Car' Sells For $2.4 Million

A silver Aston Martin DB5 that had been owned by actor Sean Connery was sold at auction Thursday for $2.4 million.

It was a 1964 Aston Martin DB5, just the sort of car that British secret agent James Bond drove in the 1960s films in which he was played by Connery. The Bond character has been played by a number of actors and has driven many different cars in the more than two dozen films in the series. They've included everything from BMWs and Bentleys to Chevrolets and Fords. But the 1964 is still the best known "Bond car."

The one that Connery first drove in the 1964 film "Goldfinger" was an Aston Martin DB5 replete with gadgets like machine guns, an ejector seat and an oil slick maker. More than 50 years later, Connery purchased a 1964 DB5 for himself -- though it lacked the movie car's guns and gadgets -- in early 2018. Connery died almost two years later at the age of 90. It was only DB5 he ever actually owned.

At $2.4 million, which included fees to the auction company Broad Arrow, the car fetched more than originally projected. The company had expected it to sell for between $1.4 million and $1.8 million at its collector car auction in Monterey, California. The buyer was not named. The auction is one of a number of collector car sales during Monterey Car Week, an annual series of classic car events on California's Monterey Peninsula.

A 1964 Aston Martin DB5 in this car's pristine condition would typically be worth about $1 million, according to the classic car insurance and event company Hagerty, which recently took full ownership of Broad Arrow.

DB5s directly associated with James Bond films have sold for vastly more than that. A gadget-filled DB5 that was used to promote the film's original release sold for $6.4 million in 2019.

During his life, Connery had often told his children of his fond memories of driving the Aston Martin in films, his son Jason Connery said in an interview. When they were grown they suggested to their father that he buy one, but he was resistant to the idea.

"He'd say, 'I don't want to because it feels a bit obvious, you know, with me,'" Jason Connery said. "I said, 'But forget it, it's not about that.'" Barney Ruprecht, an Aston Martin specialist with Broad Arrow who had also consulted with Connery on making the purchase, advised Connery against getting a car in need of restoration since the work would probably take a couple of years, he said. Instead, he and Connery sought out a car that was in as near-perfect condition as possible. The car remains in very nearly that condition, according to Ruprecht, with only some creases in the seat leather as evidence it has been sat in.

Once Connery purchased the car, he had it repainted from black to Snow Shadow Gray, the color closest to that of the movie car.

But after that work was done, there was little time left to actually drive it.

"Unfortunately as he got older, traveling, especially to Europe [became difficult] and then COVID hit and...," said Jason Connery. "You know, unfortunately, he never really got to enjoy the car that he'd bought."

The car was kept by Connery at his home in Switzerland, according to Jason Connery. He was so fond of the car, he kept a photo of it on his desk.

A substantial portion of the proceeds from the sale will go to support the Connery Family Philanthropy Fund, according to the Broad Arrow Group. In addition to the car itself, the winning bidder will receive a ride in the car from the famous retired Formula 1 racing driver Jackie Stewart.

Stewart, like Connery, is from Scotland, and the two were longtime friends.

For all the debate around Right to Repair, it’s amazing how simple the actual issue is. On the anti- side, you have companies who say that their users are a bunch of idiotic babies who can’t be trusted to make their own choices about who fixes their stuff, and which parts they use. The companies say that they should be given the authority to decide who can effect repairs, and under which circumstances — and that they will only use this authority to keep their users safe.

On the pro-repair side, you have people who say that companies aren’t always the best choice for fixing the products they originate, and that the more companies have to block repair competition, the worse their own repair services get. When companies have to compete against an independent repair sector, they have to offer attractive prices and they have to keep up a supply of parts so older products can be kept in service.

When users decide who gets to fix their stuff, they can make trade-offs that they alone can appreciate — like the choice to keep using an older device rather than sending it to a landfill, or the choice to fix their own gadget because they have an urgent need (say, a farmer who wants to fix their own tractor so they can bring in the crops before a storm).

Apple leads the anti-repair axis, which is weird, considering the company’s origins. The Apple ][+ gave rise to a generation of hardware hackers because it shipped with Steve Wozniak’s gorgeous hardware schematics, inviting tinkerers to extend, modify and fix their machines.

Apple isn’t particularly subtle about why it fights independent repair. CEO Tim Cook started 2019 with his annual shareholder letter, in which he warned his investors that Apple’s profits were threatened by customers who stubbornly chose to get their old gadgets fixed rather than trading them into Apple for replacements:

He wasn’t taking that risk lying down. In 2018, Apple led an anti-repair axis of giant companies — including Wahl, John Deere, major appliance makers, and others — in defeating 18 state right to repair bills that would have forced companies to supply diagnostic information, manuals, and tools to independent service depots.

These right to repair bills didn’t come out of nowhere: they represented the independent repair sector’s frustration with giant corporations’ ongoing legal and technical assaults on the fix-it shops that keep our gadgets working for us, and out of landfills.

Long before Apple killed those right to repair bills, it was inventing and perfecting the anti-repair playbook that other industries followed. Apple used three tactics to fight repair:

Hiding documentation. Not only does Apple fail to publish its repair manuals, it actually treats them as trade-secrets, forcing internal and external technicians to sign nondisclosure agreements as a condition of accessing them.

Blocking parts. Apple goes to enormous lengths to keep replacement parts out of independent repairers’ hands. When you bring your busted Apple product to an Apple Store, they’ll often offer you a trade-in deal. If you take it, Apple gets to send your gadget to its “recyclers” who drop it in a giant shredder, a nonstandard practice that ensures that no one harvests working parts out of those broken devices:

On a more basic level, though, blocking repair is indefensible in a market economy. When you buy a gadget, it’s yours. You are allowed to do whatever you want with it, even stupid things. If there are ways of using your product that are so dangerous to others that they should be banned, we do that with democratically accountable laws, not unilateral commands from corporations with unresolvable conflicts of interest.

What’s more, repair is in the national interest. Repair makes supply-chains resilient, keeping vital equipment in service when manufacturers are unreachable and unavailable or simply disappear. Repair is also an engine for economic development: landfilling a ton of e-waste creates one job; recycling that ton creates 15 jobs.

When monopolists attack right to repair efforts, they often point out that repair advocates make money from fixing your stuff, as though this was some kind of damning conflict of interest. It’s bizarre. Yeah, your neighbor who runs your corner fix-it shop pays their mortgage by fixing your phone for you. Was there anyone who didn’t understand this?

What’s more, Apple — or Wahl, or GM, or John Deere — aren’t exactly charitable nonprofits whose repair programs are operated as a public service. Apple was — and likely will be — a $3 trillion company. But all the money in the world wasn’t enough to make right to repair go away. People stubbornly keep insisting on being able to choose their own repair technicians, and rejecting a future where we all drown in e-waste. It’s shocking, honestly — won’t anyone think of the poor shareholders?

Apple kept racking up wins at the state level, killing right to repair initiatives, but the company could read the writing on the wall: repair was coming. It’s a matter of when, not if. So Apple switched to Plan B: they invented repairwashing, fake repair programs that kept its repair racket intact, but made it seem like it was cooperating with the repair sector.

In 2019, Apple launched its certified independent repair program, which allowed independent repair shops to fix some iPhone screens, with Apple’s blessing. The program was a joke. Despite only allowing screen repairs, Apple refused to supply certified shops with parts to do these repairs. Instead, the shops must gather their customers’ sensitive personal information and send it to Apple, wait for Apple to verify it, and send the needed part.

Participants had to promise not to do any repairs other than the few that Apple permitted, which meant that shops that joined the program had to reduce the services they offered to their customers. They also had to promise not to buy third-party or refurb parts, and submit to random audits.

Unsurprisingly, they got few takers for this offer, but that wasn’t the point. The point was to have a program that they could cite as part of their future efforts to kill right to repair laws: “See, the market is working! No need for government intervention!”

This was just a stalling tactic. It couldn’t last forever. Eventually, enough lawmakers would get briefed on how restrictive the program was, and so Apple needed Plan C: Repairwashing, the home edition.

Last spring, the FTC reported on its two year Nixing the Fix investigation into repair, publishing a ringing endorsement for independent repair as good for Americans, for resilience, for the economy, and for the environment:

And a few months after that, Apple announced a new “home repair program” that would send real Apple “parts, tools and manuals” to iPhone owners who wanted to replace their screens or batteries. The announcement prompted a lot of speculation about how Apple would neuter this offer:

Even the wildest guesses fell short of Apple’s jaw-dropping, industry-leading fuckery. This month, The Verge’s Sean Hollister ordered an Apple home repair kit, and found himself in possession of 79 pounds of Apple gear:

Apple shipped Hollister two Pelican cases’ worth of phone-fixing tools, starting with an industrial glue-melting machine so he could separate his phone’s case (Apple is Exhibit A in the case for “screws, not glue” to aid in repairs). Even then, it left behind a gross, gluey residue that was supposed to come away with tweezers (not included in the 79lb kit, and also, this didn’t work).

The process of replacing the iPhone battery is a master-class in planned obsolescence. Any device that survives for more than a couple years needs to have its battery replaced. Apple likes to pretend this isn’t true — indeed, the company secretly slowed down older phones’ processors so they wouldn’t chew through their failing batteries. Despite this, Hollister discovered that replacing his battery required removing three different kinds of security screws as well as innumerable tiny, fiddly clips that held the ribbon-cables in. It turns out the battery Apple ships is VIN-locked, and the phone won’t recognize it until you phone an authorized third-party repair technician, cable your phone to a laptop, connect to the internet, and allow the technician to remotely access your phone (and all its data!) and then bless the repair by keying in an unlock code.

This is clearly more repairwashing. As Hollister points out, Apple eats the cost of shipping the repair kits, about $200 each way. That’s a pretty good indicator that Apple doesn’t think anyone’s going to go through an 80-page repair at home — especially not one that actually costs more than bringing your phone to Apple for the same repair.

It’s worth contrasting this repair with iFixit’s equivalent, third-party repair experience. For $20–50, iFixit will ship you a battery and all the tools you need to do the repair, and they repair excellent manuals and videos showing you how to do the fix:
