so i thought about this on a walk today—

one of my fave running gags that unfortunately didn't last past season 1 was the "good song title" gag. it happens 3 times (if there are more pls message me but i'm pretty sure i'm right):

01x01 - "The Curse of Dethklok"

Toki: "Yeah, but we such screw-ups that he would be sewn back together wrong." Nathan: Whoa! That’s a good song title.

01x06 - "Deathfam"

Nathan: "Good song title: bloodrocuted."

01x09 - "Mordland"

Toki: "Oh, blood puke! Good song title! Someone write that—oh, that's right, we already wrote that."

and i realized: wow, these interactions only happen between toki and nathan, that's cute and fun. and then i double realized that only one of those songs ever made it out of the show's canon and onto a dethalbum, that song being "Bloodrocuted." which is the one song out of these running gags that nathan came up with on his own, without input from toki, even though both "Sewn Back Together Wrong" and "Blood Puke" exist in the show's canon.

whether this was intentional or not, that is an insane way to subtly hint at nathan's role as band lyricist while also hinting at toki's almost nonexistent creative input in the band.

“Y’know, I was gonna say drawing as one of ‘em, but like, that’s kinda my job too so… uh. Well. Whatever, drawing. The other two? Makeup. I have a shit ton of palettes with all the pretty colors. My favorite brand is Melt Cosmetics ‘cause they have an eyeshadow shade called ‘chismosa’ and, like, same. HA! Always liked watching my tía doing her makeup ‘cause she made her eyebrows suuuuper thin and arched. Not my thing but I dig it. Oh! Last one, last one, umm… is taking naps a hobby? I don’t think it is. Oh my god, wait, duh. Animal Crossing. I take so fucking long designing those little houses for the animals on the island thing dude. My god.”

I liked guavas a lot as a kid, still do, I just don’t really eat them as much. And I liiiiike… oh! I like dipping my fries in ice cream. In-N-Out fries and a chocolate shake? Yeah. That’s my shit right there.”

“…Okay well if you have to know… I brush my teeth kinda hard. Look, I don’t know, okay?! It feels right! And it’s kinda funny looking at how fucked up my toothbrush is compared to another person’s if I’m sharing a bathroom with them. Oh god dude it’s worse if I’m listening to a song I really like. Bloodrocuted had to be taken off of my getting-ready-for-bed-and-winding-down playlist ‘cause I was going through toothbrushes too fast after a couple weeks. Whoops.

Uh… well, I don’t leave my purse or wallet or anything on the floor. Superstition that you lose money that way. My mom said the devil takes it. But like my mom’s kinda… okay, you know Edward Scissorhands? That lady with all the candles with the saints on ‘em and the organ? Yeah. But still. I don’t wanna risk it.

I get anxious a lot so I kinda hold my breath when I get tense, I think. Or I’ll wiggle my foot around, or I start, like, playing with whatever I’m holding. I should probably get some slime or something… give it a big ol’ squish. Oooh maybe they make Cinnamoroll ones! Just gotta hide it if I find one. All my Cinnamoroll shit goes missing sometimes and I don’t know why. Mph.”

Dethalbum IV: Last Call with Dethklok

On August 6, 2006, Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha had a vision to create an adult animated television series on [adult swim] that would be centered around a melodic death metal band named Dethklok. The show featured fictional band members: Nathaniel Explosion – voiced by Brendon Small (vocals), Skwisgaar Skwigelf – voiced by Brendon Small (guitars), Toki Wartooth – voiced by Tommy Blacha and Mike Keneally (guitars), Pickles – voiced by Brendon Small (drums), and William Murderface voiced by Tommy Blacha (bass). Brendon Small wrote the music for the show and it would serve as vital pieces in many of the animated scenes throughout the show’s history. The show would instantly be a hit on [adult swim]. So much of a cultural phenomenon, that Brendon Small would go on to release The Dethalbum in 2007 featuring songs like “Murmaider”, “Awaken”, and “Bloodrocuted”. The album would be produced by Ulrich Wild, who was known for producing albums for bands such as Pantera, Static-X, Stabbing Westward, Deftones, and Breaking Benjamin.

Brendon would enlist the help of metal veterans Gene Hoglan (drums), Mike Keneally (guitar/backing vocals), and Bryan Beller (bass/backing vocals) to help with touring as Dethklok. Currently, the touring band now consists of Brendon Small (guitar/lead vocals), Gene Hoglan (drums), Pete Griffin (bass/backing vocals), and Nili Brosh (guitar). Dethklok as a band has released a total of four LPs with their latest release, Dethalbum IV, on August 22, 2023, by Water Tower Music. So, let’s talk about Dethalbum IV and what to look for when you hear it!

The very first (1) track, “Gardener of Vengeance” begins with a brutal assault of thunderous double bass drums from Pickles/Gene Hoglan (Death, Testament, Dark Angel, and Strapping Young Lad) with some crunchy riffs courtesy of Brendon Small. When Nathan Explosion/Brendon comes in with his bloodthirsty vocals, the listener is once again transported to a land that is all so familiar. The land of brutality that is Dethklok. “Gardener of Vengeance” is the perfect track to kick off this album.

The second (2) track, “Aortic Desecration”, is also the first single released from Dethalbum IV to the public. Well, they picked a great single to get old and new fans alike eager to hear the entire album. “We’re all going to die!” will go down as one of the brutal beginnings of a metal song. I feel some Morbid Angel influence interwoven in this vicious track. I cannot wait to see Dethklok perform this song live and sing “Aortic desecration. How could I be so wrong? Disemboweled publicly. This is the dying song”.

Track four (4), “Mutilation on a Saturday Night” showcases Pickles/Gene Hoglan’s abilities to bring out some guttural thrash beats as the band creates another Dethklok metal masterpiece. One of my favorite tracks off Dethalbum IV is track ten (10), “SOS” is an epic 4:39 minutes’ worth of Dethklok’s ability to formulate a barrage of crunchy riffs mixed between double bass blast beats and Nathan/Brendon’s vicious lyrical accompaniment.

Track eleven (11), “Murmaider III”, closes out the unforgettable saga of Dethklok just as it began with “Murmaider” on The Dethalbum. Dethklok (allegedly) closes out their discography with the following quote, “The Murmaids sing/The Blackened fire/The blazing sky/The pluming ink/The sea beast cry/His final sleep/But we survive”.

While knowing that this might be the swan song for Dethklok, you can take solace in knowing that this entire album owns up to this enormous task. Dethalbum IV from start to finish is a testament to Dethklok’s growth and maturity in recording new material. From The Dethalbum to the latest Dethalbum IV, the evolution of their technical production and prolific songwriting is brutally illustrated with songs like “Gardener of Vengeance”, “Aortic Desecration”, “SOS”, and “Murmaider III” off Dethalbum IV. For 17 years, Dethklok has captured the attention of metal heads across the globe and now before the possible final chord is played on their current tour in Los Angeles, they have cemented themselves in the halls of the metal pantheon. Brendon Small had a vision with Tommy Blacha that spawned a movement in comedic callousness and extreme metal.

Metalocalypse #7: “Dethfam” | September 10, 2006 – 11:45PM | S01E06

We met Tom Peters’ father a few nights ago, and now we meet all of Dethklok’s families, well-well-well! This one starts with a Larry King stand-in interviewing Dethklok. He alludes to the fact that the band is notoriously close-lipped when it comes to their personal lives and backgrounds and whatnot. That’s when they get ambushed with A HUGE SURPRISE: their families! The show has tracked down all of the band’s parents and siblings and brought them on to make them shiver. This host winds up dead because lots of scenes on this show end with gory spectacle; a piece of equipment falls on him and he gets electrocuted in his own blood, inspiring the Dethklok song “Bloodrocuted”, eventually spawning an out-of-universe Dethklok music video that I will probably forget about for EPHEMERA CORNER.

Dethklok have an awkward time hanging out with their family, and they are just trying to get them out of their hair. It’s extremely relatable to those of us who have strained relationships with our own families. It’s basically “I guess we’ll go out to eat. Maybe we can see a movie. Uh, what else can we do?” They also go minigolfing, I think.

The end of this one is we find out the family is planning to make an album, cashing in on their newly found place in the spotlight. The final scene ends very memorably with the families ranting at their children about the brutality of raising children, and the episode ends with them all doing grotesque heavy metal screams. Thunderbolt, Murderface’s decrepit grandfather requests he be euthanized repeatedly using his new Stephen-Hawking-style wheelchair. 

Anyway, I found this episode to be very memorable, but I don’t think I laughed out loud at it. I do like this one, though. A long time ago, I told Chip Pope that my favorite episode of Austin Stories, a show that I love that nobody has seen so it’s useless as a show to use as a frame of reference for anything but I’m doing it anyway, was the one where we meet his mother and her obnoxious dickhead boyfriend whom Chip clashes with. He thanked me but told me he always thought that episode was a bit shark-jumpy. Episodes where we meet a main-characters parent can feel stunty, I guess. As I mentioned before, we met Tom Peters’ father a few nights ago, and I don’t think either of these episodes are particularity guilty of jumping any sharks. By the way can you imagine anyone jumping sharks in this show? They’d probably get freaking TORN APART by the shark and be all bloody and DISGUSTING. It would be nasty

☆Favorite Thing to Cook/Bake: I only know how to make breakfast foods, so pancakes/eggs. I've been trying for years to master pancakes, but each batch teaches me something new.

☆Favorite Spare Time Craft: other than drawing, I really enjoy writing poetry or letters to people. I've been meaning to buy some stationery.

☆Niche Dislike: I fucking hate mashed potatoes. Fireworks, as well. I can't stand the sound of them. (They are beautiful though. I just have bad memories attached.)
