DP HC - Ambient Psychomagnotheric Residue Theory

I just saw a picture that really fits with my hc of Ambient Psychomagnotheric Residue.

It appears to be by @menta-art.

The fact that it looks like this suggests that something bad must've happened there... possibly multiple times... & the emotional residue in the area hadn't been purified or filtered in a long time, leading to the negative emotions caused by whatever happened to fester there & become a sort of spiritual rot.

Which is usually the reason why places without specific ghosts or spirits haunting them become haunted.

It's basically what I mean when I talk about how natural portals are necessary as they filter out used up ambient emotional & psychic energy so that things like this don't happen.

Like, you know how some places just instill you with a feeling of dread or hopelessness at the scenes of murders or great, tragic battles? It's due to a portal not having opened in the area in a long time or in the case of a huge & particularly tragic battle or multiple tragedies over a long period of time, not enough portals have opened there to fully purify the area or even keep up with the level of tragedy.

And, if this residue remains for too long, it can fester & become what the Japanese refer to as On'nen (怨念) or Malice. On'nen is a feeling of unresloved hatred, malice, grudge, & resentment that can make ordinary spirits furious & evil ones even more so.

If it remains like that longer & grows, it can further process itself until it manifests into an ever purer form known as Miasma or Shōki. Shōki being a sort of harmful, malignant spiritual pollution. It is never a good thing when this happens.

Anyway, it's extremely likely that places like Chicago, Gotham (especially places like Crime Alley & Arkham Assylum), Bludhaven, Salem, the concentration camps of the Holocaust, prisons with bloody histories, & places where frequent executions took place, are known to have a lot of really bad spots.

Lazarus Pits being in the area also tends to exacerbate the situation if said pits aren't cleaned regularly or has been purposefully corrupted such as is the case with Nanda Parbat's Lazarus Pit. It having been suffused with a complex, dark, necroturgic energy via multiple blood sacrifices & dark animantic (soul magic) spellwork in an attempt by an ancient evil necroturgist to create beings that he could control, but were more durable than living humans & corpses.

Not to mention the isomorphic blood bonding ritual that made him & his kin all-but immune to these effects. Thus allowing them to use said pits as an artificial fountain of youth & 'healing.'

The dark necroturgic & animantic curse upon the waters is supposed to steal the soul of any corpse not related to the warlock & make them his puppet while said souls are used as the fuel for the continued enchantment.

As one might guess, Ra's Al Gul is a descendant of this warlock. The Demon Head originally found it upon reading his great grandfather's journal about it.

He's always wondered; if the pit was supposed to keep members of his family alive & young, why had his great grandfather died? The truth is that prolonged exposure to the pit waters causes a warping of the mind that eventually leads to a type of insanity that reduces one to something not unlike the Joker if he were also a rabid dog.

The warlock had either realized what was happening early on & decided to have his fun while he could & accept his natural death (if with a fallback so that he could come back & continue his reign of terror) or he was reduced to little more than an animal & was put down by someone when he attacked them. In such a case, he would've entirely forgotten that he could use magic or any other form of defensive measures other than attack, attack, attack!

Or, maybe the warlock has a sickly son or daughter besides Ra's grandparent that he regularly put into the pit in order to sustain them, but the frequent use of it eventually lead to them going feral, so he had to put them down. As such, he knew to just accept death (with a back up as mentioned above).

Going back to the spiritual rot thing, most places in Gotham & Bludhaven look like this at least to a degree.

Something similar can happen in places where a lot of good things happen, but in the reverse direction. This is partially why places like churches & other sacred places often fill one with a sense of peace or calm.

If you walk into a church & you feel a fear or dread that is unrelated to your personal concerns regarding the safety of your soul due to committing sins, then it's very likely that that particular church has experienced more tragedies than joys or miracles.

Though, whether it's due to external troubles or internal corruption is something that you normally can't just know unless either you investigate or you are spiritually gifted. In such a case as being spiritually gifted occurs, some are able to better discern the nature of the negativity. Whether bad things happen here because of outside forces, thus giving the place a more sad or frustrated atmosphere, or if bad things happen here because of internal forces such as a serial murderer for a pastor, thus giving the area a much deeper sense of fear & dread with an edge of maliciousness.

bUCKLE UP- I grew up with a older brother who hyperfixated on batman for 30 years and I recently got into it by playing all arkham games and currently watching through the 1966's batman (explains my catwoman icon) -cracks knuckles- LETS ROLL Dick Greyson - The og robin, his family was a bunch of circus folks so he is dancing around when he beats people but his family gets killed and batman sees himself in dick and adopts him (in batman forever bruce wayne adopts a grown ass man its funny- alfred offers him milk and cookies and dick legit looks like he has 3 kids and a mortgage) He is fun and light hearted and brings joy to bruce's dark life. He gets sick of being in batmans shadow and goes off to bludhaven to be nightwing (bludhaven is apparently the place catwoman dies in the comics rip) Dick greyson gets killed by Bruce Wayns actual blood related son Damian Wayne (son of Bruce Wayne and talia al ghul) Jason Todd - his story is sad and also the focus point of the batman arkham night game, he gets tortured by the joker and killed but comes back and sees batman replaced him with Tim Drake and sees the joker is still running around, Bruce never gave up on the joker but gave up on Jason todd and it hurt him so much he became the Arkham Knight, but later redeems himself by becoming Red Hood (he uses rubber bullet guns) Tim drake - bald Barbara gordon (batgirl) - Gordon's daughter, she discovered batman's secret and helps him out by being batgirl and then the joker finds her and shoots her in the stomach through to her spine paralyzing her - she becomes Orica! the computer tech nerd B) Damian Wayne - He is the son of Bruce Wayne and Tali al Ghul- he is a trained assassin and is conflicted with like murdering people and he is involved in the court of owls. he ends up killing Dick Greyson (nightwing) and bruce heart broken gives up on him, Damian was born to replace his grandfather who is basically an insane immortal man who wants to destroy gotham city because the city was built on a curse I feel like i might not be 100% and someones gonna come for me but bada bing bada booM

"Tim drake--bald" LMAO wishing I knew about him so I could see how funny this actually is, but still got a laugh from it 😂

I totally get so many memes now. Like so many. Also, the Joker has fucked up a lot of these characters yikes

Why Me!? Chapter 14

Marinette was bundled up in her blankets on her very expansive bed and was focused on the screen in front of her. An irritated Chloe Bourgeois, an impatient Aurore, and a glaring Kagami, who was sharpening her saber, were staring back at her. Marinette made a quick mental note to ask her how many sabers she has. Juleka had confiscated her saber, unfortunately, it seemed like Kagami had spares.

“-then Alya had the nerve to ask the committee to reinstate your plans, of course since I’m on the committee I immediately shot down that idea, She of course immediately threw a tantrum and was almost kicked out, later she had a live stream ranting about how being class president is so difficult” Chloe said making air quotes.

“Of course at this point, she had only 30 viewers, most of them from Bustiers” Kagami added putting away her saber.

“How is it that Alya only had the job for LESS THAN A WEEK and is already stressed, meanwhile we both had the job for over a year and yet we never cracked” Chloe ranted.

“Some people are just unappreciative,” piped Aurore. Chloe snorted, that was the understatement of the year.

“Anyways talking about her leaves a bad taste in my mouth, Marinette when are you returning to us?” Aurore asked she missed the bluenette.

“Probably in a year,I’m getting enrolled in some school in Gotham”

“Are your aunt and uncle okay with you staying for the rest of the year?”

Oh right Marinette forgot that was her cover story. She hated lying to her friends even more. But She was scared of how the others would treat her if they found out her parentage and if she would be able to tell the difference between the honest people and the fake gold-diggers, the Alya’s, Alix’s and Nino’s so to speak.

Now It was getting harder to be able to video call her friends in a spot that would get her privacy and doesn’t look too extravagant.

Her new room was far bigger than her room in Paris, which took Marinette some getting used to. Of course, Mr.Wayne made sure to give her money to fill her room up. Although a spool of thread does not cost triple digits, at least the thread that she uses. She already has an area dedicated to her sewing business.

Tim has been gracious enough to be hmannequin until hers come. Marinette finds it unfair that someone like Tim can be sleep-deprived and coffee-addicted and still look like that. Unfair.

Marinette already finished Ms.Kyles' dress and she’s going to give that to her next time she comes to the Manor.

“Yeah, they’ve been very uh accommodating, and great actually!!”

“It shows, you look way less stressed and more relaxed” Kagami noted

“The wonders of having a decent sleep schedule” Marinette quipped. Seriously she didn’t have school yet and didn’t have to worry about class duties anymore. It was awesome.

“Oh and great news, We’re going to Europe in a few weeks,” Marinette added excitedly

“WAIT!!!! Exactly when” Aurore asked.

“Two or three”

“EXCELLENT” Aurore blurted out, “That means that you’ll be able to attend the school dance”

Suddenly all lightbulbs seemed to click on in all the girls.

“That was exactly the final piece we needed” Kagami nodded

“ Yeppers, now all we need is Ladybug and then we’re good” Chloe added.

“Waitwaitwait Final Piece to what?” Marinette asked

“Revenge” All three girls responded in unison.

“Oh boy, you guys wanna clue me in on it? Or is it that type of situation where I want as much Plausible deniability as possible?” With those three you never know.

“Probably best for you to not know anything yet” Chloe chimed sweetly.

Thank god That Marinette can now afford bail

Suddenly she started getting a video call from Dick

“Sorry guys I got my er-cousin calling me, I'll talk with you guys tomorrow,” Marinette said, Receiving a chorus of goodbyes and one whine in response. Marinette hung up and quickly answered Dick.

“Hiya Maribug, sorry I wasn’t able to call you yesterday things are pretty busy around here” Dick greeted. Marinette noticed that the poor guy seemed exhausted, he had dark bags under his eyes and kept on yawning.

“It’s fine Dick, What’s going on?” Marinette asked concerned.

Dick sighed. “It seems that Penguin and Black Mask have set up base here in Bludhaven, unfortunately, the two aren’t playing nice, so now we seem to be on the brink of a gang war,” Dick said tiredly. Both Officer Grayson and Nightwing were busy trying to stop the city from falling into a gang war, of course, that was exhausting.

Gang War? AND HER BROTHER WAS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF IT!? Having a cop brother is stressful enough but having a cop brother in Bludhaven is something else,

Seriously Bludhaven makes Gotham look like a resort destination and that’s after Nightwing has made his debut. Mr.Wayne told her that Dick was regarded as a good cop who’s been helping root out corruption in the BPD. Which of course puts the idiot in EVEN MORE DANGER. Jesus Christ. Now she can understand why Everyone always seems to mother hen the boy. She’s joining the crusade soon.

“But you’re not going to be too involved are you Dick?”

“Sorry Maribug, right now I’m involved, but don’t worry your brother can take care of himself” Dick quickly added with a wink.

“Uh Huh Sure, those eyebags say differently, Go Sleep” Marinette ordered.

Dick Barked out a laugh. “Oh alright Maribug, Night Night”

“Nighty night” Marinette responded and hung up. She turned over and shifted in a comfortable position and let the darkness overtake her.

Batcave, Wayne Manor Gotham City, USA 8:50 pm

“Damian Marinette is going to start school at Gotham Academy in a few days, I need you to keep an eye on her and help her” Bruce informed Damian

“-tt- of course, father, But I am afraid we’re going to have to come up with a believable cover story”

“No cover story, people are bound to find out soon anyways, but she’s going to be enrolled as Marinette Dupain Cheng so people won't probably make the connection”

“Yeah demon-spawn and if people do get curious as to why you’re being decent, just say she's your cousin or something” Jason added oh ever so helpful

“-tt- Very well”

“We’re going to introduce Marinette in a few weeks anyways, we have a business trip to London so she’s going to make a pitstop in Paris and get her stuff in order before we announce her to the world” Tim piped up upon entering the Batcave.

“Jesus being the Child of Bruce Wayne is going to be stressful enough, imagine how wack it's going to be when she finds she’s the daughter of Batman as well” Jason noted

“Speaking of which Bruce are you sure we shouldn’t tell Marinette about our little side job, I mean shes noticed that we aren’t exactly normal,” Tim said, while typing away on the batcomputer, right now he was busy trying to track down a few escaped convicts from Arkham and figure out any last known locations of Black Mask and Penguin.

“Yes father she is not an imbecile unlike you Drake”

“Why you little br-”

“We can’t do that” Jason cut in before insults started flying. “She’s a normal kid, She isn’t a secret superhero or nothing, she’s the embodiment of sunshine and happiness, which reminds me Bruce are we sure she’s your kid?” Jason asked

“Yes, I’m sure” Seriously what was it with people questioning it. He wasn’t that gloomy, was he? “She has her own business that has already gained attention and recognition, plus she was a class president in her old school, she had to get that from me” Bruce retorted.

“OH COME ON, we can’t loop her in, She was fucking president of her class, that’s as normal as you can get, Plus right now her sunshine counterpart dickface isn’t here to balance things out anymore” Jason finished. At that reminder, Bruce slightly grimaced. Dick had to go back to Bludhaven for his job. As a Cop. It doesn’t matter how many years it’s been Bruce still worries about his oldest and his choice of career.

“Fine we don’t tell her, what’s going to happen if she’s ever in danger she doesn’t exactly have a panic button that we could give her without arousing suspicions” Tim added.

“Dupain-Cheng isn’t an idiot, she shares fathers blood she’s going to figure it out eventually”

Finally, Bruce made up his mind.

“We can’t risk her life, much less your sister’s life, by revealing our secret for no reason. We aren’t going to tell her-, For now” Bruce quickly added before Jason could make his protests. Taking a quick look at his son's faces it seemed that it was the decision that everyone could agree on, thankfully.

“This is going to totally gonna go wrong isn’t it?” Tim muttered.

It probably will.

Jason Todd x Reader

[ Part One ]

“I’m Red Hood,” Jason confessed.

“Wha-” you failed to form even a single word. It was shocking to hear your beloved Jason was a completely different person.

Jason never regretted what he had done. The people he killed were criminals, they deserved to die. How were you, the daughter of Batman, supposed to understand this? You denounced the use of lethal force long ago as a teenager. You allowed yourself to stay at Arkham to make up for unwillingly breaking the moral code he had no intention of following ever again.

Bruce noticed your internal struggle, it was the one similar to his. He wanted Jason back but not like this. When you started pacing he could almost hear your mind overworking itself as you processed how this changed everything.

To make up for the time you lost with your children you decided that while Gotham may need you your kids needed you more. You weren’t out at night patrolling the city as much as everyone else but that didn’t stop you from watching over them. You knew all about their run-ins with Red Hood. There was an extensive file on him containing a list of crimes, victims, and weapons he owns. Many nights you sat in front of the Batcomputer after putting the kids to sleep and sometimes ran out to help when you were needed. The last time you ran out there was when you got beaten by some of Jason’s acquaintances. “That time in Bludhaven when I went to help Dick...it was you who was causing all that trouble.”

All of the information was coming back to you making you realize why they had hidden Jason from you. He was a gun-wielding outlaw they were trying to capture. You finally stopped your pacing in front of him, “Why are you fighting against your own family?”

Jason looked over your shoulder meeting eyes with Bruce.

You didn’t wait long for a response because you had more questions for other family members."You ALL knew!" It was unbelievable, to know that not just your father but pretty much everyone around you knew Jason was alive before you did. Your whole pregnancy was spent thinking, regretting your choices, and playing out scenarios of how things would change if you would have gotten to Jason first instead of his mother. That was the reason you slipped into a deep depression.

Bruce gave a single nod affirming your statement.

It all made sense now, that day when you really did hear Jason’s voice. This was a huge secret yet he acted like it was no big deal. “But why lie to me?”

The fact that he died not knowing he was going to be a father haunted you. It haunted you because you knew weeks before but waited for the perfect time to tell him. When time ran out you blamed yourself for everything. Not once did you fully enjoy your pregnancy. Your children were born prematurely, their little hearts affected by your constant distress.

You turned to your brother, Damian, who refused to leave on the grounds that he was your blood brother. "Did you know too?" When he gave the exact same response you started to see how annoyingly similar your father and brother were. “Why did you two think I was better off thinking Jason was dead?”

“Tt,” Damian looked away unable to answer your question. He no longer knew if it was the best choice. Had they told you then maybe even Todd wouldn’t be as screwed up as he was.

“The same reason Jason and Jasmine don’t know why their mother isn’t in any of their baby pictures.” Bruce loved his daughter but he would never forget how dangerous she was. When you left the League of Assassins you found him, a father who stood for justice. When you decided to side with him and put an end to crime without the use of lethal force he was proud to call you his daughter. “Jason died a hero but came back a criminal.”

“Hey!” Jason shouted taking a step around you to most likely confront Bruce but you wouldn’t allow him. You pressed your hand to his chest keeping him where he was. “All of you wronged me.”

“Come on kids we’re leaving." You crouched down with open arms beckoning your kids over to you.

“Ma-” Jason and Jas ran straight into you taking a shoulder each to rest their heads on as they hugged you. They were glad and even a little relieved to see their mother. They were starting to think something bad had happened to you with that stranger.

After a hug and a kiss on top of their heads, you held their hands to guide them out of the room.

You collected your kids from Dick and Tim in a hurry that had them following behind you asking questions.

“Where are you going?”

“What happened with Jason?”

“Everything is being... resolved.” The long pause in your answer worried them but they had no reason to suspect anything was going on until you tell them how you left the three of them in the cave to discuss on their own. “Maybe you two should go check on them to make sure they’re still breathing.”

They run in a hurry but when they got to the Batcave it was quiet with no one to be seen. A groan finally brought their attention to semi-conscious Jason. He was struggling to sit up thanks to Damian who was now coming to as well.

“What’s going on here?” Tim asked.

Bruce appeared out of nowhere walking past them silently to the Batcomputer. He was holding the side of his head in pain from the kick he had received. From there he saw you leaving in one of his many sports cars through the manor’s security cameras. “She’s gone.”

“What?!” Jason quickly pushed Damian off of himself and stood up a bit unbalanced. He joined Bruce in front of the screen unable to understand what just happened.

Dick helped Damian up despite his yelling, “I can stand on my own Grayson!”

“Can someone please tell us what happened?” Tim was utterly confused by the turn of events. He expected the three of them to be at each other’s throats

“Sister is mad at all of us,” Damian explained. “Now she’s running away with my niece and nephew.”

“OUR babies” Dick cried out loud. “We have to go after them.”

“Should be easy with the tracker on the car-” Tim was searching for his phone ready to locate the vehicle through the GPS tracker but stopped when he felt the familiar object in his pocket along with his phone. "She removed it.” He didn’t even recall being close enough for you to be able to slip the device in there.

“Of course she did, sister isn’t stupid like you Drake.”

“Hey!”

“Stop, if we’re going to find Y/N we need to go now!” Jason knew he needed everyone’s help, he needed to work together with them to find you. Escaping was something you were too good at.

“He’s right,” Bruce broke up the fight between his sons. “Dick, Damian, start looking through Gotham. She won’t make the kids travel all night.”

Immediately the two left to start looking for you.

“Tim you stay here and start looking through traffic cams. The GPS is off but we can look for the license plate number. If she uses her cards or cellphone send us the location.”

“Got it!” Tim immediately sat down in front of the Batcomputer to begin his search.

Bruce ignored Jason and got into the Batmobile.

Jason followed him and got into the passenger's seat, not wanting to be left out of the loop of information. When Bruce looked at him with a ‘what are you doing look’ Jason shot him one back. “I know you don’t like me for knocking up your daughter-”

Bruce’s eyes narrowed with a low groan, warning Jason not to go further. He didn’t want to hear about how his teenage daughters' romantic encounters.

“I’m coming with you. You may hate me but I love Y/N and those are my kids!”

Bruce looked straight ahead driving out of the cave with Jason. It was silent for a few seconds before Bruce confessed, “I don’t hate you, Jason.”

Jason turned to Bruce wide-eyed, unsure of what he just heard. After that, no one said a word.

The struggle to keep your curious children from wandering around Jason’s safe house was real. It was a new environment for them, their first instinct was to explore and they weren’t shy about making themselves at home.

“Woah,” Jay gasped lifting Jason’s helmet (Red Hood helmet) up so he could take a better look at the wall lined with guns. The little boy was amazed by the vast collection.

You didn’t know where he got the helmet from but couldn’t care to ask when there was a greater danger. “Jason Thomas don’t you dare...” you growled in a low husky voice knowing very well that those guns were loaded.

The kids were amazed by your ability to sound like Batman. “Mother you are the night too!” Jas giggled.

You scooped up little Jason and held Jasmine’s hand guiding them towards the bed all the while wondering how Alfred was able to handle both of them so well. “This place is definitely not baby proof.”

“Baby? We are not babies mother!”

“Fine then, this house is not child-friendly.” you corrected yourself. The neatly made bed seemed like the safest place for them. As soon as you sat them down they appeared to listen better. “I need you two to stay out of trouble.”

“What are we doing here?”

“Waiting for someone.”

“Who?”

“I’ll tell you who he is when he gets here. Just promise mother one thing...” the kids nodded for you to go on. “Don’t attack him this time, okay?”

“What are we doing here?” Jason asked when his safe house was quickly coming into view. He wasn’t really surprised Bruce knew where it was. But why he had driven there when they were looking for you did seem like a good question to ask. “We’re supposed to be looking for Y/N.”

Bruce’s car was nowhere to be seen but he knew this is where you would be. “Y/N hates secrets more than anything.” Yes, you were mad at Jason for his Red Hood activities but your anger was more directed towards him for keeping that information from you. He knew there was a chance you would side with Jason once you found out the truth. “I don’t blame her for choosing your side.” He too had done some questionable things when it came to someone he loved.

Jason couldn’t hide how relieved he was, the corners of his mouth raised into a smile.

“But I will blame you if she starts killing again.”

Jason frowned offended by Bruce’s insinuation. “I would never-”

“What Jason?” Batman stopped the car a few feet away from their destination. His scowl was darker than ever. “You would never ask her to kill? She doesn’t need you to ask. If you are in danger she won’t think twice about helping you.”

“She’s better than me... she wouldn’t kill anyone again.”

“I told you Jason, it’s easy to cross that line.” In one of his many encounters with Jason he had confronted him about his decision to start killing people. He tried reasoning with him trying to make him understand why he didn’t take revenge on the Joker. “The hard part is stopping. Y/N crossed that line; it took her a year to recover but it would only take a second for her to go back. Just one kill and she is a murderer again.”

Bruce Wayne outside of Batman

So I saw this:

Bruce Wayne could do a lot more to fight crime in Gotham City by funding youth programs with his immense wealth instead of dressing up like a bat and dishing out vigilante justice. (just-shower-thoughts)

And thought it would be a cool to research Bruce as a philanthropist and Wayne Enterprises as a business. You know, instead of applying to jobs or cleaning.

Basically all Bruce does all night and day is give to charity and help people.

The main organization he uses is the Wayne Foundation, an umbrella company for the Thomas Wayne Foundation and the Martha Wayne Foundation. TWF is for medicine/science and gives awards/money to research/researches, funds the Memorial Clinic in Park Row (ie Crime Alley) where Leslie Thompkins treats anyone and everyone who comes through her door (villains included), and dozens of other clinics around Gotham. The MWF is for the arts/urban revitalization of Gotham, families, and education. It runs orphanages (and built its own orphanage), creates and funds schools, preps teachers for learning disabilities, gives grants to artists, and sponsors Family Finders, which exists to reunite families. Also soo many soup kitchens. It is also the organization that gives money/scholarships to Gotham Academy. It maintains museums in Gotham, exhibits art and film festivals, as well as being a big sponsor of the theater scene.

The Wayne Foundation also funded Victims Inc, which aimed to help victims of violent crimes. Then there’s Neon Knights, which is started by Tamara Fox/Tim Drake and is funded by the Wayne Foundation. The organization basically is geared toward helping at-risk youth and.. former gang members/teenagers likely to join gangs/something about gangs, it’s been a while since I’ve read Red Robin. He also helps Selina Kyle get her own community center in the East End part of Gotham (ie Catwoman territory) using money she stole from Black Mask/a crime boss of Gotham.

And he rebuilt Gotham essentially through Wayne Enterprises after No Man’s Land, pushing Lex Luthor out of Gotham. After a huge earthquake demolishes the city, the Federal government declares Gotham a “no man’s land.” Gotham has a reputation for being a wasteland so they were mostly thinking “eh better off without it, let’s get all the good people out first tho” but a lot of people were left behind, including mostly minorities, homeless, orphaned, disabled, injured, poor, and convicted felons. They gov’t destroyed all the bridges/tunnels/roads that lead into Gotham and set up military blockades to ensure no one/no medical supplies/no food goes in or out (i always thought that was absurd until I saw the federal fumbles post-Katrina but I digress). During No Man’s Land, he worked together with Poison Ivy to feed the city and shelter various orphans.

Bruce lobbied Congress to end the No Man’s Land mandate and helped it eventually pass the Billion Dollar Build-up Federal Works Project which used the Wayne Enterprises, the Wayne Foundation, the US Army Engineers, LexCorp, and STAR Labs to rebuild. It also employs thousands of people in Gotham. Wayne Enterprises also started buying up buildings and forcing architects/engineers to “Earthquake proof” new builds so that they can survive an 8.5 Earthquake. Even before NML, all Wayne buildings (like Oracle’s watchtower) were Earthquake-proof. IN ADDITION, HE MADE SURE EVERY NEW BUILDING/REPAIRED OLD BUILDING WOULD BE MADE HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE (I bolded that because it gives me so many Oracle/Batman family friendship feels).

Bruce also always pays for property damage, especially to individual victims. Catwoman v2 #82 (2008):

He funds troops and the police force. During and after Dick Grayson’s stint as a Bludhaven Police Officer, the department—which was MASSIVELY underfunded—received huge amounts of top-of-the-line equipment, like high tech bullet proof vests and body armor to soldiers abroad. Also, in Black Mirror, the Foundation builds a high-tech, multimillion dollar forensic lab and donates it to the police force.

(sidenote, look how cute— Dick keeps pictures of Bruce, Alfred, and Babs in his locker!!!!)

Red Robin #04:

He also buys the Daily Planet, ie the pulitzer-prize winning newspaper that Lois Lane and Clark Kent work for. I can’t remember all the details but basically, the Planet is one of the few papers in Metropolis not owned by Lex Luthor and thus the only paper that’s printing critical stories of LexCorp and evil Lex/the guy who owns Metropolis. Lois negotiates ownership over to Perry and then Bruce buys it, working to keep the newspaper out of Luthor’s control/keep free press.

Wayne Foundation also funds superhero groups and superheroes like Young Justice, Teen Titans, Outsiders, the Birds of Prey (although Babs does some other things to secure funding too), and the Justice League. He bought much of the equipment Doctor Mid-Nite uses in the Justice Society of America. Then there’s Batman Incorporated, which runs all over the world, and Wayne Enterprises owns Holt Inc ie Michael Holt/Mister Terrific’s business (although you could argue that Holt Inc helps WE out, since the patents on Holt inventions like T-Spheres are extremely lucrative). He does a lot to take care of the families of superheroes, like setting up a college fund for Irey and Jai West (kids of the Flash, Wally West, and Linda Park-West), pays for Supergirl/Kara’s school/apartment/everything, sets up a trust fund for Stephanie Brown’s child which she gives away for adoption and Stephanie Brown’s whole operation as Batgirl/college tuition, arranges for the adoption of Helena Kyle (Selina’s daughter) as well as a trust fund, pays for Tim Drake’s stepmother’s medical care as well as funeral costs for his dad, gave Clark Kent/Lois Lane the apartment they live in as a wedding gift, and covers the medical expenses of various heroes, like Barbara Gordon/Oracle and Wendy Harris/Proxy. Not to mention he adopts/provides for Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Cassandra Cain. Bruce asked Lucius Fox to invest the money Dick Grayson’s parents left him upon their deaths. He turns it into a small fortune and Dick uses it to fund his life/operation as Nightwing initially.

He helps people to the point where it’s almost comical how much money he gives out and how readily he employs people, sometimes criticized for being over-simplistic and naive. He invests in random gang bangers, prostitutes, homeless communities, and low level criminals as well as high level criminals who are mostly just victims of their circumstances or show genuine desire to go straight. He carries a whole stack of Wayne Enterprise business cards in his Utility Belt and when he stumbles upon someone he can help, he gives them a card and a job. Most entry-level positions are given to people through Community Outreach programs and they don’t discriminate against ex-cons. Like, Ellie, who goes on to be a receptionist:

Not to mention, it certainly PAYS to work for Wayne Enterprises. There’s a corporate scholarship program that covers full tuition for any employee of Wayne Enterprises. Any employee, meaning also entry-level mail room people, which is the specific instance from the comics I can think of.

He also sits on the Arkham Parole board, giving criminals like Harley Quinn a chance to be rehabilitated. In the new 52, he even moves Arkham into Wayne Manor (Arkham Academy— it’s actually a totally bananas concept but I haven’t read the issues yet to really know more).

Then there are the divisions of Wayne Enterprises, which include a healthcare system for Gotham citizens. Wayne Biotech is cutting edge in training people and developing vaccinations and cures for different diseases, like the fight against AIDS and HIV and reconstructive plastic surgery. Wayne Foods focuses on ethical food production, getting rid of additives. Wayne Steel develops technology for the US Navy and WayneYards does the same. Wayne Aerospace builds for NASA and the US military. Wayne Chemicals includes Wayne Oil and Wayne Botanical and search for petrochemicals and alternative fuel sources. They came up with a way to run power generators on algae. Wayne Industries, the main R&D branch, are looking for cleaner energy among many other things. Wayne Medical is more focused on treating illnesses as opposed to researching illnesses (which is what Wayne Biotech does) and maintains/runs hospitals in Gotham through the Thomas Wayne Foundation. Wayne Institute is a thinktank and recruits up-and-coming professionals to plan future development. Wayne Research Institute basically just does research on everything. Wayne Construction built a free railway system around Gotham in the midst of government corruption. Throughout all his business endeavors, Wayne Enterprises aims to practice business ethically, cutting ties with LexCorp when they did some weird robot killer thing and Dr. Pamela Isley (later Poison Ivy) when she wanted to create some toxin that would mind-control people.

I mean, even when Bruce Wayne was being impersonated (long story, read Heart of Hush), the most sinister thing Tommy Elliot did as Bruce Wayne was give away buttloads more money to charity.

DATABASE HISTORY:

The world has a way of working in which a moment that seems entirely inconsequential can later be brought back in a much more significant setting. For Timothy Drake, this moment occurred when he was four years old and attending Haley’s Circus with his parents Jack and Janet Drake. Tim’s father asked if the circuses main attraction, the Flying Graysons, would take a photo with them and the acrobats agreed. The youngest Grayson, Dick, paid Tim special attention and promised that he would dedicated his performance to him. Afterwards Tim and his parents went to their seats and the Graysons started the show.

There was no way of anyone knowing that the high wire was going to snap, or that one day Richard Grayson would become Tim’s adopted brother. As soon as the John and Mary Grayson fell to their death, Tim’s parents rushed him out of the tent to spare their son from seeing the tragedy. They weren’t fast enough though, and Tim witnessed the Batman himself consoling the desolate Dick before he made it outside. The photo that was taken of the two families was later sent to Dick by the Drakes because they felt bad for him, and that was the last time that Tim thought about it for five years.

At the age of nine, Tim watched some footage of Batman and his partner Robin and made a huge revelation. The move Robin was doing was a quadruple somersault, and that was so rare that only a flying Grayson could do it. After a little research, Tim found that Dick Grayson had become the ward of billionaire Bruce Wayne. Connecting the dots that numerous adults had missed, Tim realized that Batman and Robin were none other than Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne. Choosing to keep this information to himself, Tim watched their exploits for years through Dick’s shift to Nightwing and the arrival of the second Robin, Jason Todd. When Jason abruptly died shortly after, Tim noted the change in the Batman and deduced that he actually needed a Robin for the sake of his sanity.

When Nightwing, aka an older Dick Grayson, traveled away from Gotham to work with the Teen Titans Tim decided to follow him. The two ended up solving a case in the place that they had originally met as innocent children, Haley’s Circus, and Tim made Dick realize that Bruce needed help. His former partner decided to help him as Nightwing, but Tim insisted that Bruce needed a Robin. Dick ignored Tim’s theory and went to help Bruce, only for them both to be taken by Two-Face.

At only thirteen years old, Tim went to Wayne Manor and spoke with Alfred Pennyworth who helped equip him in the Robin costume. With the proper gear, Tim was able to save both Dick and Bruce and made the plea to become the next Robin. Bruce was reluctant but relented and agreed that Tim could be Robin on a trial basis. The next several months consisted of Tim being trained by Alfred, Bruce and Dick before he was allowed to wear the costume again or go out into the field.

Before Tim was introduced as Robin however, a criminal by the name of the Obeah Man kidnapped Tim’s parents while they were on vacation in the Caribbean with plans to sacrifice them. Bruce managed to save the two and stop the Obeah Man, but not before Janet and Jack drank some water laced with poison. Janet died from the substance, and Jack was left in a coma with paralysis. Bruce began to doubt if Tim should be Robin as he now had a reason for vengeance, which had destroyed Jason, but Tim reiterated that he wanted to do what was right and not get revenge. After he saved Bruce and the reporter Vicki Vale from the Scarecrow, Bruce allowed Tim to officially become Robin and gave him his own costume.

The training didn’t stop there though. Even though Tim had what he wanted for so long, he then began to have doubts. Bruce reassured him that he had not only earned the role but had Bruce’s faith in him, because he wanted someone who not only had guts but was smart and Tim possessed both of those traits plus some. Before Batman would let Robin on the streets of Gotham he took him on a world tour overseas in order to help Tim figure out who he was in addition to improving on his fighting skills. During this time Tim crossed paths with Lady Shiva and King Snake, but when he refused to kill King Snake at Shiva’s command he proved himself to Bruce as ready and was brought back to Gotham to begin his tenure.

Tim soon proved himself to be a different Robin than Jason or Dick had been. He was more reserved than Dick had been, and since he wasn’t raised an acrobat, he had to work harder on his fighting and physical prowess. Even though Tim was a fine fighter, Bruce had a rule in place that if Tim was to ever encounter one of the rogues known for killing (ie the Joker or Two-Face), he was to not engage and call in backup. That rule was disobeyed during one of Tim’s first solo cases in Gotham, when Tim ended up getting stuck in a confrontation with the Joker himself. The Joker had killed Jason Todd and was initially confused as to why he was back and if he had actually murdered the boy, but realizing that Tim was a new Robin he vowed to kill him as well. Using his intellect and skill however, Tim was able to defeat the Joker and sent him back to Arkham where the criminal made it known that Tim was his to kill.

Shortly after this, Jack Drake awoke from his coma. Tim helped him secure a house next to Wayne Manor so he could continue being Robin, but things didn’t go smoothly. Before the coma Jack had often been preoccupied with work, but after he wanted to develop a closer relationship with his son. Jack would eventually grow resentful of how close Bruce and Tim were and would site Tim’s constant disappearances as his son trying to avoid spending time with him.

When the Cluemaster was released from jail as cured, clues still popped up around Gotham and Batman and Robin decided to handle the case. While attempting to stop Arthur Brown, Tim noticed a girl in purple fleeing the scene and followed her. Thinking that she was helping Cluemaster, Tim caught and unmasked her only to find a blonde teenager who was his own age. The girl, Stephanie Brown, went by Spoiler and was actually the daughter of Cluemaster who was trying to stop her father. Tim and Bruce allied with her to catch her father, and after that Tim made sure to work with her some more and the two became friends.

Tim’s father began seeing a therapist by the name of Dana, and the two were eventually wed. The couple had been together a while when Tim got a phone call that his father needed to speak to him immediately. There was an intruder in the Drake household and a note with a gun stating that Jack needed to protect himself. Jack told Tim over the phone that he was proud of him and whatever happened was not his fault. When Tim managed to get home he found both his father and Captain Boomerang dead, as he had used the gun at the same time the hired killer had attacked. Tim was devastated at the loss of both of his parents, and shortly after Donna had a mental breakdown and was placed in a mental hospital in Bludhaven. The hospital was later overrun with crime and Donna went missing and was presumed dead.

Bruce offered to officially adopt Tim, but Tim refused and hired an actor to pretend to be his Uncle Eddie. Bruce easily saw through it and wasn’t offended, but instead offered to help Tim make a better cover-up story. Eventually, Tim relented and let Bruce adopt him. He then continued to serve as Robin while testing the boundaries and developing a little more independence to the point where he was able to pass along the Robin mantle to Damian Wayne when he was dropped into Bruce’s life. It was surprising to find that Bruce had fathered a child with Talia al Ghul, but Tim saw it as the perfect chance to take up the alias of Red Robin and experiment a bit.

DATABASE CONNECTIONS:

BRUCE WAYNE has become like a father to Tim, even though he wasn’t an orphan and had a father. He had to beg Bruce to let him be Robin after what happened to Jason, and he’s been working hard to not let him down ever since. Bruce isn’t perfect, but Tim is determined to make him proud. He needs a Robin. Batman just works better that way, and Tim knows that he can be the Robin that he needs.

DAMIAN WAYNE took the Robin mantle from Tim when Bruce decided to work with him, but Tim got over that. He and Damian have fought a few times with their fists and tried to work together once although their dislike of each other and difference in fighting skills made that hard. Tim’s trying to like the kid though. He just makes it very, very hard to do that.

DICK GRAYSON is Tim’s big brother. This is speaking in adopted terms, of course, but that doesn’t matter to either of them. Dick is a little more lighthearted than Tim at times, but they both have their strengths as Robin. From the moment Tim took a picture with Dick before the final Flying Grayson performance, he’s been his hero. Now they’re family and Tim is glad to have him around.

JASON TODD was the Robin before Tim, but Tim never got to meet his predecessor because he was murdered by the Joker. Tim knows what happened to Jason, and it’s really sad. He didn’t want to replace him, just keep the legacy going. There’s been a new guy in town though, the Red Hood, and Tim has some creeping suspicions even though he hasn’t said anything yet.

STEPHANIE BROWN may be the daughter of a criminal, but she’s become a friend of Tim’s. Stephanie shamelessly flirts with him both in and out of costume, but so far Tim has been showing her how to be a real hero because he knows that she won’t give up the cowl. There’ll be time for flirting later once she has actual skills and not just good intentions.
