Reprise Vol. 1 - Master & Slave

I think it's no big secret that Paul doesn't have much good to say about Kiss' Carnival of Souls. To put it mildly. Or he simply does everything imaginable to at least create such impressions whenever this album title should rarely enough become the subject of an interview question. Of course, he's welcome to do as he pleases, but personally, from my humble perspective, I think it's a bit of a shame, because I can also remember times when he spoke a tiny bit differently about it.

For example, I can still remember the time when the subject of a reunion was still treated as fictitious, and it wasn't on anyone's horizon, least of all Paul's and Gene's. That was back in 1994/95, when Kiss' laudable motto of perseverance and giving their best was for a change increasingly emphasized in their new music.

I still remember very well that regular little Kiss feature in the German Rock Hard magazine, which was supervised by their Kiss Die-Hard (0), and from whom one got the vivid impression that he regularly got a certain insight into the world of our favorite band. I think it must have been February or March 1995 when Paul and Gene (1), but also Eric Singer (2), apparently got in touch with the interviewer directly from the rehearsal room in a telephone interview and Paul confidently said, not without his usual side-swipe at Gene, that his songs were much more melodious and heavier than Gene's. There was a certain pride in that. At some point later he even went so far as to claim that the new album was the best and heaviest since Creatures of the Night.

Oh my! What I mean, since that's a rather thoughtful and equally rare tribute to their own music, which was previously only outspoken to give a very special shine to the indeed excellent Revenge, and the return to form associated with it. And I must add to this Paul seemed quite proud of Revenge in 1992 regardless of how hard he had contributed to the previous albums in the 80's anyway. But who knows, once again, it was probably just the latest sensationalization of the upcoming album (3). Promotion is a double-edged sword, but to wipe Revenge away so succinctly because of it, I really don't know. But maybe and probably because it wouldn't have sounded so good to say their new album was the best since... their last one.

But to get my act together and to at least briefly talk directly about Master & Slave in this context.

So, as I already mentioned in my original entry, Master & Slave had the working title: Paul's Riff. In my perception, this suggests pride and respect, not necessarily from Paul himself, but clearly from his band environment. And the fact that such a meagre, yet all-saying no-name was chosen as accepted as a working title, if not even honored from everybody involved clearly speaks for itself.

And because this is a reprise, I'll simply feature an excerpt from my original text about what I see in this song:

"What begins in Not For the Innocent with a few approaching, ominous tones, continues in Unholy as a small extension in a slightly different pitch, and a much more compact back and forth oscillation of these tones, which thereby does not form the entire riff, but only a complementary part of it. In Master & Slave the whole thing gains in drasticness, and the motif is doubled to a lower pitch, added to the previous one to secure its terrain, only to turn into a Black Sabbath motif a la After All. An endlessly repeating highly dynamic acrobatic feat in loud and quiet/guitar and bass contrast."

When writing Master & Slave, Paul must have thought to himself: Ok Gene, a dark album full of Unholys shall it be? This time I'll listen to you, then you shall get Unholy. Which must have stimulated his ambition to try to outdo Gene in terms of Unholy by more than a small margin. I think the result shows in all strength what the right ambition can achieve.

"To conjure up this wet dream of riff Paul must have really tried hard and done his very best to achieve such a result - regardless of what he claims about Carnival of Souls as a whole today."

It is a real pity that he no longer stands by it. Gene and, above all, Bruce (4) seem to have fewer problems with this.

(1) Gene emphasized the psychedelic component and compared Carnival of Souls to the Rolling Stones' Satanic Majesties Request (1967) (5) , and that they couldn't explain either why it sounded different from the previous album.

(2) Eric said the album was super heavy and exactly the kind of music he wanted to play. I love to mention this because he had also clearly distanced himself from Carnival of Souls over the past few years. Klassik.

(3) Can anyone still remember how they loud-mouthedly advertised Crazy Nights as a mixture of Animalize and Destroyer back then? There's even a Youtube video of it, but don't ask me where. Anyway, that was still was something different.

(5) Hmm, which Stones album did Ace's cover of 2000 Man actually come from?

Mi avrebbe chiesto della prima Università laica in Europa, la Federico II

Se fosse un pittore mi avrebbe chiesto della scuola di Posillipo e dei suoi tantissimi straordinari artisti famosi in tutto il mondo....

Se lei avesse viaggiato mi starebbe domandando delle perle del mediterraneo come le isole : Capri, Ischia, Procida, la costiera Amalfitana, sorrentina e i campi flegrei. Le campagne di Benevento e Avellino. O i siti archeologici : Pompei, Ercolano, Paestum, Oplontis, parco archeologico di Posillipo, Velia, villaggio preistorico di Nola. 

Delle 300 e piu chiese di vario stile che si trovano nel solo centro antico più grande d'Europa, quello di Napoli, patrimonio dell'Unesco, antica e gloriosa capitale di un grande Regno.

Egregio signore lei saprebbe del secondo museo archeologico al mondo per importanza, il Mann a Napoli e della Versailles italiana: la reggia di Caserta...di certo più bella e più grande.

Se fosse stato un medico avrebbe provato interesse per la nota scuola medica Salernitana, la prima e più importante istituzione medica d'Europa nel Medioevo (IX secolo) e come tale è considerata da molti come l'antesignana delle moderne attività medico chirurgiche.

Se fosse più informato adesso staremmo parlando di Totò, Eduardo, Viviani...Sofia Loren, Massimo Troisi, Bud Spencer...Salvo D'acquisto, Raimondo di Sangro...di Maria Longo che fondò il primo dipartimento di maternità, decorato con affreschi che ispirano calma e serenità. 

Pensi che fu il primo nosocomio fatto costruire da una donna per le donne..quando ancora la donna non contava niente, da voi però.

Se fosse stato un cuoco mi avrebbe parlato di pizza, di ragù, della pasta e patate, genovese, babà, sfogliatelle, pastiera...e saprebbe della mozzarella di bufala...una squisitezza unica al mondo.

Noi Campani siamo persone oneste, intelligenti, lavoratori, socievoli , allegri, orgogliosi, solari...e poi noi napoletani sappiamo inventarci la vita tutti i giorni, è una questione di sopravvivenza e di necessità...lei e quelli come lei se fossero nati in Campania, cosa tra l'altro impossibile, starebbero con le pezze al culo e farebbero la fame...

...e non sarebbe neppure abile per i camorristi...

...lei è solo un cretino, si informi (come disse il principe Antonio De Curtis in arte Totò)

...ed ora la congederei con una pernacchia!

THE DETOURS WAS THE ORIGINAL NAME OF WHICH BAND SERIES

Well while there is much speculation, it has recently been discussed at the offical Weezer message board, that Rivers Cuomo weezer's front man had a dream of a man with a flaming pie, the man with the pie was from outer space. Weezer frontman had bad athsma when he was a kid Rivers himself has openly admitted that this is not what Weezer are named after. It's popular misconception that Weezer are named after River's supposed asthma. Mickey Melchiondo and Aaron Freeman (the real names of Dean and Gene Ween respectively) decided that "any self-respecting members of a band should share the same surname" (in homage to the Ramones.) So, they picked out the name Ween and chose new first names to fit along with it. The name is a mix of the 2 words: Weiner and Penis. On top of the Ramones-same-last-name thing, I read that Ween was a mix of the words "wuss" and "peen" (short for penis) The rest of the group always thought it was funny, so that's what they named the band. Since he is left with only a nub, he calls it a Ween. I have read that the lead singer was in an accident when he was younger, and his weiner got cut off. The band is named after the song by The Undertones. It was a reaction to some 2004 anti-gay legislation that Bush proposed. The band's tag line is appropriately "Let Go." One night at practice, Eric Coiner (the bass player) quoted a line from that scene and it stuck. Wedge was one of the few pilots to survive the death star battle. The name came from a Star Wars character - Wedge Antilles. The missing vowels were "taken" by the bassist in 1983 and never returned. Everyone kept mispronouncing their names. They took the name out of Bowie's song because they admired his music so much. Warsaw was the first name Ian Curtis' band, Joy Division. So as an homage to him, he named the the band Warrant. It is rumored that the guitar player (Eric) in the band was a huge fan of RATT and more so of their Lead guitar player Warren DeMartini. However, it is worth noting that the band is in fact from Kent in southeast England. Supposedly, named after Wang Chung Way, a tiny street in LA's Chinatown, where there was a Chinese restaurant which put on punk shows upstairs. I don't believe it is Chinese for "perfect pitch" as some have claimed. The sound a guitar makes when you strike a string. Named after the Indonesian slang term for a lug wrench (onomatopoetic phrase that describes the sound of a dropped lug wrench). I saw an interview with the band where they said the name referred to the sound of an electric guitar being strummed up, then back down. however, jakob's said that's incorrect and that it's all in the dinner theory. the photographer made a comment saying how they looked like a bunch of wallflowers. another popular theory around is that while the guys were at a photoshoot, they were pretty shy, standing off to the side. he said it was hard enough for 5 people to decide what to order, let alone choose a name that they'd have for the rest of the band's career. it was basically the only name that nobody hated. Jakob posted on the band' site saying that they came up with "the wallflowers" after sitting around the dinner table. Don't just stand there like Wallflowers." He said something along the lines of "Do Something. The name owes it's origin to a comment made by a photographer, while having a picture of the band taken.

The name comes from a traditional song on Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series compilation. It was the only thing written on a white board in the room where they first rehearsed. Originally this was the working title of an instrumental song but soon became the band name. But when asked directly the only answer is "We Ain't Sure, Pal". We Are Sexual Perverts is inscribed around the self titled LP album. We Are Sexual Perverts is inscribed around the label on their self titled debut LP. W.A.S.P simply are short for We Are Satans People. Read in an interview, the members were bored and said the name sounded cool

I put on black clothes and painted my fingernails black just to write this. Even my socks are pitch black. And our neighbors' rooster avoids me when he notices me even from a distance, and that's good for him, because today I would do the same if I were him.

I can't remember where I might have read it, but it seems most likely to me that Bruce was the source of the information that the working title of It Never Goes Away was Black Sabbath (1) .

And with this I could claim to have said everything on this subject, namely that It Never Goes Away's main riff and Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath are basically one and the same. The only difference is that Kiss do everything possible in terms of arrangement to add a few more tracks to their version by shifting the pitches downwards, adding lower pitched guitar tracks to the higher ones, and doing all sorts of things with the bass and making the whole thing as low and just as downbeat as (un-)humanly possible. Many a Kiss fan had to come to terms with that, and still nibbles at it today.

To paraphrase a saying: When you set out to out-black sabbath Black Sabbath, do it right, or don't do it at all. In my humble opinion, I can only say that Carnival of Souls is one of the few albums on which Kiss really did everything right.

The only thing I think Paul needs to work on is his Ozzy impression.

Taylor Swift will receive the Artist of the Decade award at Sunday night's (Nov. 24) 2019 American Music Awards from a fellow mega-selling singer-songwriter. ABC and dick clark productions announced on Thursday (Nov. 21) that Carole King will present the award to Swift at the live broadcast from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to present Taylor with the Artist of the Decade honor,” said King in a statement. “She is an extraordinary songwriter who has cultivated a unique and personal relationship with her audience. As a woman songwriter who also got into the music world at a young age, I know the kind of determination, struggle and single-minded perseverance it has taken for her to reach such heights.”

Following some back-and-forth, Swift has been cleared to perform a career-spanning set at the Ciara-hosted show, after her former label, Big Machine, gave her the green light to play her old songs. Whether she will do so, however, is unclear. In a statement to Billboard that didn't mention Swift by name, a representative for Big Machine said the company has "agreed to grant all licenses of their artists' performances to stream post show and for re-broadcast on mutually approved platforms.

"It should be noted that recording artists do not need label approval for live performances on television or any other live media," the statement continued. "Record label approval is only needed for contracted artists' audio and visual recordings and in determining how those works are distributed"; a spokesperson for Swift did not return requests for comment.

Sunday night's show, which will air live on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. EST, is slated to feature performances from Christina Aguilera & A Great Big World, Toni Braxton, Camila Cabello, Billie Eilish, Green Day, Selena Gomez, Jonas Brothers, Kesha feat. Big Freedia, Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Post Malone feat. Travis Scott & Ozzy Osbourne, Thomas Rhett and Shania Twain.

Album recommendations

Dave Jakes by Dave Jakes

Enigmatic former Lonely The Brave frontman Dave Jakes finally released his debut EP this week, having proceeded it with a couple of soaring singles in Caterwaul and opener Been In My Dream. If this self-titled is a glimpse of what to expect from Jakes’ solo material then fans can expect the same bruising, heartfelt songwriting and stirring vocals that made Lonely The Brave’s earlier material so special.

From the string-drenched majesty of Silhouettes, the emotional gut-punch of Diggy’s Pushing Holes to the beauty and splendour of the EP’s curtain call, Be The Apple, Jakes’ talents shine through the melancholic, emotive arrangements on show. Having now reintroduced himself to the world, here’s hoping a full-length debut album is up next.

Evermore by Taylor Swift

Having not been a fan before, one of the biggest surprises for me this year was just how much I enjoyed Taylor Swift’s folklore. The record saw the superstar team up with The National’s Aaron Dessner over the Spring lockdown to create some of her most honest and acclaimed work to date. However not one to rest on her laurels, Taylor has (pun intended) swiftly returned with folklore’s sister record, Evermore, for her second Album of the Year contender of 2020.

Once again teaming up with Aaron Dessner, as well as his brother Bryce who’s on orchestration duties on several tracks here, Taylor builds on the foundations laid by the collaborative partnership on folklore to sound even more assured in this new found style. If folklore was her dipping her toe into the indie-folk world, Evermore is her effortlessly backstroking in it.

From the festive lament of ‘tis the damn season, the stripped-back minimalism of happiness to stunning piano ballad tolerate it, it is clear this collection is some of the best songs Swift has ever written. She continues to thrive in this collaborative working too, with the HAIM sisters showing up for country-folk, murder mystery no body, no crime, whilst Dessner calls in the rest of The National for the album’s undisputed highlight, coney island. Having joined Swift on folklore for one of the songs of the year, Exile, Justin Vernon also returns once again to lend his vocals to the record’s closing title-track.

All in all this is another faultless album from Swift, and one of the welcome surprises of 2020 has been her converting me into a fan of her music – here’s hoping for more releases like this in the future please.

Man on the Moon III: The Chosen by Kid Cudi

From one sequel to another, however this one could not be more different. Whereas Swift waited just a few months to release the follow-up to folklore, pioneer of modern hip-hop Kid Cudi has spent the last decade building towards the third part in his Man on the Moon trilogy. Having paved the way for some of today’s biggest rap stars such as Travis Scott with his first two records, Man on the Moo#n III ultimately brings with it a weight of expectation. With this being the case, MOTM3 can’t help but feel like somewhat of a disappointment as Cudi comes across as the follower this time around rather than the innovator.

That said despite being a somewhat patchy collection, what this album does deliver is plenty of enjoyable moments that are some of the best of Cudi’s career. From the Scott Pilgrim-sampling, infectious beat of She Knows This, the spacey, mesmeric groove of Damaged to the hypnotic ambience and defiant lyrics of Mr. Solo Dolo III, Cudi forges immersive sounds you just want to wash over you. Towards the home stretch of the record, MOTM3 finally starts to hit its stride with The Void offering up the album’s standout moment, before being shortly followed by excellent collaborations with Phoebe Bridgers and Trippie Redd. The record finally draws to a close with Lord I Know stating that things are to be continued, suggesting this isn’t the last chapter in Cudi’s MOTM story.

So although this won’t make any year-end best of lists, Cudi adds a worthy addition into his MOTM series with another highly enjoyable album which is probably still the best of the three so far.

We Will Always Love You by The Avalanches

Also worth checking out, Australian electronic outfit The Avalanches are joined by a host of special guests including Johnny Marr, MGMT, Blood Orange, River Cuomo, Karen O and many more for their latest odyssey into psychedelic indie-dance. Although the record can be quite self-indulgent at times, there are plenty of highpoints, none more so than one of the tracks of the year so far, Neneh Cherry and Jamie XX collab Wherever You Go.

And finally to coincide with the release of Cyberpunk 2077, one of the most highly anticipated games of the year, Grimes has released a DJ mix album from the perspective of her character in the game. Blending her own music with segments of electronica, dance remixes and mash-ups of classic tracks by Britney Spears, Rihanna, The Ramones, Tatu and Kendrick Lamar to name but a few, listening to this mixtape is a trippy and immensely fun way to kill an hour.

Chris Cuomo Gropes ABC’s Shelley Ross

LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), Sept. 24, 2021.--CNN’s 51-year-old primetime host Chris Cuomo has been outed by former ABC TV journalist and executive producer Shelley Ross for grabbing her butt cheek about 16 years ago.  Ross made her disclosure after 16 years, deciding it was better in the #MeToo age to set the record straight.  While the incident happened at a 2005 party, Ross came forward in the wake of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stepping down Aug. 27 when 11 separate women came forward, most the whom subordinate state employees, complained of workplace harassment.  “Now that I think of it . . . .I am ashamed,” was the subject heading of an email apology to Ross at the time of the incident.  Cuomo acknowledged the incident that was witnessed by Ross’s husband, prompting them to suddenly leave the ABC party at a bar on the Upper West Side.  Cuomo apparently told Ross he could do it because she was no longer his boss.    

         What makes the incident so egregious is the way CNN deals with sexual harassment or other sexually-related incidents from past or current employees. Chris said during the primetime broadcast he would not cover allegations against his brother out of some family loyalty, asking his audience to understand.  Chris never disclosed to his audience his own past behavior with inappropriate sexual groping.  Ross claims that Cuumo sent her an apology email about an hour after the incident, realizing the potentially career-ending consequences.  Ross recalled, Chris “sexually harassed me at a going away party for an ABC colleague . . .” Ross said.  She recalled, “whether Mr. Cuomo entered the Upper West Side bar, he walked toward me and greeted me with a strong bear hug while lowering one hand to firmly grab and squeeze the cheek of my buttocks,” Ross said, embarrassing Cuomo.   

          Were it not for Chris deciding to boycott coverage on his brother Andrew’s sexual harassment claims, Ross may have kept her secret quiet.  But once Chris decided to stonewall the story, she decided to come forward.  “I can do this now that you’re no longer my boss,” Cuomo told Ross at the time, recalling Chris’s “cocky arrogance.”  Ross, replied, “No you can’t,” she said.  “pushing him off me the chest while stepping back, revealing my husband, who had see the entire episode at close range. We quickly let,” Ross recalled.  Ross expressed confusion when she said she didn’t think Chris groping her was “sexual.”  “Never thought that Mr. Cuomo’s behavior was sexual in nature.  Whether he understood it at the time or not, his form of sexual harassment was a hostile act mean to diminish and belittle his female former boss in from of the staff,” Ross said, having difficulty with the world “sexual.”    

         Cuomo’s behavior was 100% sexual, by anyone’s definition, whether Ross thought it was sexual or not.  There’s noting arousing about being sexually assaulted, only embarrassment and humiliation.  Coming forward now, Ross helps the discussion for untold numbers of women or men facing sexual harassment in the workplace or other settings.  “As Shelley acknowledges, our interaction was not sexual in nature.  It happened 16 years ago in a public setting when she was a top executive  at ABC.  I apologized to her then, and I meant it,” Cuomo said, cleverly discounting his action as non-sexual.  Ross clearly doesn’t understand why sexual harassment is always an inappropriate sexual behavior.  Because she had a neutral response or one of revulsion doesn’t mean that grabbing he as was not sexual.  Chris now looks for anything exculpatory for his TV audience.    

         Rushing to agree with Ross that the incident was “not sexual,” Cumo did exactly what Ross said in issuing an email apology one hour later.  Ross called Cuomo’s email, “an attempt to provide himself with legal and moral coverage to evade accountability.”  Watching Chris agree with Ross that the incident was “not sexual” shows how insincere his apology, more concerned with damage control than admitting anything about the incident.  Chris had no comment when his CNN colleague chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin was caught on masturbating on Zoom Conferencing, prompting CNN and the New Yorker to suspend him Oct. 19, 2020.  Cuomo had no comment about Toobin because he didn’t want viewers asking why he won’t comment about his brother Andrew, accused by multiple women of sexual harassment.  Ross wants Cuomo to “journalistically repent” for his conduct.    

         Ross came forward with her story in a New York Times guest essay to set the record straight, after Chris refused in his primetime CNN show to address his brother Andrew’s sexual harassment issues.  Ross said she doesn’t want Chris to lose his job at CNN, something over which she has no say.  Judging by how Chris plays a righteous journalist fighting for human and civil rights, his CNN audience can’t possibly ignore Ross’s story, exposing for all to see at least one episode of blatant sexual harassment.  What Ross means by Chris “journalistically repenting” is anyone’s guess. She clearly came forward with her story to expose his hypocrisy for not covering his brother’s well-documented sexual harassment history.  After letting Toobin back into the fold, it’s doubtful CNN’s CEO Jeff Zucker will do anything to Chris, unless of course other women have the courage to come forward.
