A mom with an iPad could shoot a gorgeous movie in Iceland but it’s still meaningful to say this is a beautiful film - also well performed. That you could replace its droning soundtrack with melodic folk music to instantly transform it into an adorable fable makes it a curious one to review. As it is, it’s never horrific or even disturbing but rather just . . . a bit unsettling. Quiet and strange, pretty and interesting, but mostly just, “Huh, weird.”

13 - Lamb (2022) / Dýrið

"Never work with animals or children" is an old entertainment industry axiom, but one that's ignored throughout the Icelandic folk horror fim Lamb. A surprising amount of screen time is handed to the film's animal performers, who outnumber their human cast mates by a wide margin.

The film, near wordless during its first half, doesn't spend much time explaining its central mystery; a visiting relative's concerns are dismissed, the leads insisting the "lamb" in question portends "happiness". The film only acknowledges the strangeness afoot via a sheepdog's perplexed gaze, and a house cat's amusingly bitchy stink-eye.

Of the human performers, Noomi Rapace (best known for her role in Ridley Scott's Prometheus, as well as for being the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) plays the surrogate mother with expressionless stoicism. Her manner of dealing with a doting ewe is perhaps the most chilling moment in this otherwise maudlin but sweet-natured cinematic oddity.
