Passion for Fashion Part 2
Danny glances around the room, initially supposed to be the living room, but Dan had quickly turned it into a studio. He had fabrics stacked everywhere, random clothes designs pinned to the walls, and various-sized mannequins scattered about with half-finished projects.
"It looks like Joann Craft's store exploded in here" he grumbles side-stepping into a half-finished gown dress and ducking under rows of fabric swatches that Dan just has to hang across the whole house by color because they help him visualize.
Or some nonsense like that.
Frankly, Danny was starting to suspect Dan had developed a new ghost Obsession now that grief no longer blinded him, and he knew Clockwork made it deliberately fashion design.
He is a bit unsettled that Dan's tunnel vision mirrors his parent's obsession with ghost hunting. Is it a ghost Obsession thing or a Fenton thing? Even Jazz can't get sucked into her physiology studies, so he had to remind her to sleep and eat. Eventually, Danny will find his own tunnel vision obsession. He just knows it.
Ducking two more times to avoid the shades of blue and green, Danny follows the barely visible pathway to where Dan is likely working on the first suit for the competition's first catwalk.
The first round of the competition was a mere selection round, where contestants were all brought into a large room and given a sketchbook, pencils, colors pencils, and reference books. After the surprise judge gave them the theme of household pets, they were to design two male and female outfits within an hour. Dan had entered the testing room like a man sent to the front lines.
Danny hadn't been needed for that round, so he explored Gotham, stopping to eat the famous Batburger. The food was far tastier than Nasty Burger, and he felt like he was betraying his city by how much he savored the Joker fries.
He did notice the way everyone was staring at him, much to his shame, just as he was licking his fingers clean. He scrambled to leave as a few teens whispered, gesturing to him.
He had been in Casper High to know that usually meant insults, so when a pretty blond girl stood up and started for him, he made haste to get out of there as quickly as possible.
He met up with Dan- with a carryout bag because he wasn't a monster- and found the other had blown the competition out of the water. His designs were first in the selection round, and Dan's head got three sizes bigger that day.
It's strange how used to living here he's gotten. It's been a month and a half, and yes, people still stare at him a lot, but it's not like Danny isn't used to being called a freak, so he ignores them all. Dan tried to stay inside the house as much as possible, rarely leaving his fabrics, but Danny felt restless being indoors all the time.
Amity Park is a small city, with most of it being open space and grass he felt strange being surrounded by a loud, crowded city like Gotham. He often wandered about trying to find something new and fun, though that was hard to do once the sun started setting.
He found being outside at night was a terrible idea the first time a trio of men attempted to shove him into a van.
Thankfully, Danny had been bored enough he recreated some of his parents' gadgets, and the three men had been stunned by his Fenton Tazzer wristband before they had opened the van door. Then there was that time a group of toddlers tried to mug him. He had been trying to find a park or something when seven kids- couldn't be older than twelve- all creeped out of the shadows holding knives and bats and demanded he gave them his wallet.
Danny hadn't meant to, but it was so bizarre he had bursted out laughing. He was so used to ghosts that the sight of little kids trying to be threatening was so historical that he couldn't stop laughing. He also forgot to breathe for a second since coming to this world. His body needed less sleep, less food, and got less tired, which was a plus on their wallets.
Danny laughed so hard he fell to his knees, shaking with jest.
The kids scattered at once, a few shouting, "Joker venom!" he was left chuckling to himself. After that, he got up and went home, the occasional snicker slipping from his lips.
Dan had thought it was hilarious, too.
Despite the time they have been here and Danny's many outings, they haven't really interacted with anyone else. Danny had never been one to have positive memories with socializing, and Dan frankly disliked humans too much to want to be around them.
With nothing to do but wander during the day and practice his model walk, Danny quickly got into the habit of tinkering with various machinery. At first, he needed to rebuild his parent's weapons and ghost gear- something he had been able to do since he was seven- then he shifted to building whatever popped into his head.
From robotic prosthetics to a TV projector, Danny filled the hours with some eclectic in his hands. Otherwise, he looked around Gotham and took pictures of the architect because it was Sam's entire aesthetic. How could he not try to capture this place for her?
Dan had been researching through the house internet- thank the ancients the house came with the service- and found various styles he liked experimenting with. Due to his ghost abilities, he worked faster than the sewing machines and was dishing out whole outfits in matters of days instead of the months they usually take.
He has even been walking around in whatever Dan chose to make for him since he thought it would get him used to being seen in something not his usual style. He can't afford to lose the fashion show simply because he got awkward. That would ruin his plans to help Batman and get home.
His wardrobe now varied from what Dan called "eboy", "skater" "K-pop" "casual chic" "haute" and "streetwear". Personally, Danny preferred the streetwear since it was more often than not baggy.
He had a lot of people staring at him when he walked around in Dan's clothes. Danny hopes he doesn't look as dumb as he feels.
"Danny, come try this on!" Dan shouts, snapping Danny out of his thoughts. He gestured to a black and navy blue three-piece suit that took Danny's breath away.
"Wow, Dan, it's gorgeous."
"Duh, I made it brat." He gestures to the vest, which Danny can see painfully embroidered swirls of black, purple, and a few white strips. It did not take him long to recognize the Magellanic cloud resting on the right side while the left is a mirror design in black, carefully blending into the blue. The pants, jacket, and shoes were a nearly jet-black cloth that somehow looked like a liquid even when standing still, but what tied it all together was the black cape draping over the right shoulder. It was pinned in place by a metal piece shaped like a Sirius Star. "The first round is space theme, and lucky for us, I was obsessed with NASA as a kid."
"No, but honestly, can I keep this afterward?" Danny asks, reaching out to rub his hands on the fabric. "Wow this is soft"
"It's satin, of course; it's soft," Dan snorts. "And sure, if we win, it's yours. I don't care what happens to the clothes after I make them."
"How long did this take you to make?" Danny asks, turning it around and sporting more accurately placed constellations of the satellite galaxy. It was like a picture made of fabric, curling from the right to the back of the vest. He'll have to take the jacket off at some point to show that part off.
"Three days. Without sleep."
"That's insane Dan"
"No, you know what's insane? This place has different beauty standards. It's all about the goth and emo kids here. A few Victorian lads, too. Or frankly, a straight-up twink is hot."
"What?" Danny's brain buffers "That can't be right. I was bullied and so were my friends for looking like that."
"Trust me, the ideal body kept coming up as I researched fashion trends and ideas. Nerds are in here. "
"W-what do I do with knowledge?"
Dan's eyes flashed a dangerous green. "You put it to use on the walkway. This suit is designed to show you off, and the best part? It's your natural body; no need to highlight beefed-up muscles or a wide chest like Dash."
"Oh my ancients....Am I hotter than Dash? Then the top A-lister?"
Dan grins. "We got this competition in the bag."
Across Gotham, Tim is scrolling through GothamLive- the favorite plate form of all Gotham, beating even Twitter- and he's surprised to see it covered by the target of their latest mission. He's back at the cave running coms since he got dosed in fear toxin on the last big fight. It was not too bad but Bruce didn't want him doing anything too adrenaline-inducing for a least a month.
He would argue, but even he knew his hands still sometimes shook when he trained. So he was on comm duty listening in to all his family as they moved about Gotham.
It was a quiet night with only three muggings and one car thief so far, but Bruce wanted everyone connected just in case.
Tim figured he could check in on the meta twins and found Danny everywhere on Gotham's online platform.
People have been spotting him strut around Gotham looking drop-dead gorgeous, and everyone near their age group who was attracted to men was losing their minds over Danny Fenton.
Tim found a few of him in skater clothes and felt his face get slightly warmer. Okay, they are right. Danny certainly paints a pretty picture, but that's worrying.
A pretty meta? He could be snatched up by the worst of Gotham soon.
Tim will have to get close to keep an eye on him. You know, for the target's safety.
Dan is his identical twin, which means there are two beautiful boys out there. Tim thinks, checking over the twin's house location. It's thankfully on the outskirts of Gotham, where it's not exactly safe, but it sure as hell isn't Crime Alley. They should be okay as long as no one finds their home.
He choked on his coffee when a picture of Danny dressed like a K-pop star casually lodging on a chair drinking a coffee appears on his dash. Yeah, he can see how the guy ended up in modeling if he could make poses like that naturally.
"Red Robbin to everyone, we may want to keep an eye on the Fenton's. Don't want them taken by traffickers."
"Danny Fenton already fought off a kidnapping:" Jason responds in seconds with a slight sneer. His elder brother has always hated traffickers and rapists the most. " Some idiots tried to escape me by going into the Outskirts and saw Danny. They took their chance only to be taken out by the guy's tazer disguised as a bracelet."
He sends the family a photo of the incident, and Danny's unimpressed look at the three screaming men makes Tim's lips twitch. Maybe Gotham wasn't so different from Santa Prisca. Only someone used to danger so often found would be kidnapers annoying, and that island wasn't exactly the safest place to be.
Their mother died to get them out, after all.
"That's not all. He's also fought off three different gangs, none of the big players but enough to raise some brows," Babs adds, displaying a gang of Crime Alley kids running from a laughing Danny, a group of men and women wearing the red scorpion marks running from a laughing Danny and a second group of kids- slightly older but not older than Danny- all backing away from the ice Danny had encased himself in. "The first two he tricked into thinking Joker was about, and the last one he just froze himself until they got tired of shooting and went away."
"What about the other one?" Bruce asks.
"He doesn't leave the house, but he's been very active online. Mostly, he's looking up fashion articles or trends. Recently, his search is nothing but "What are twinks, and why are they hot?". I can't tell if that's a culture difference or if Dan is just weird."
"They are not trained," Damian says, an undertone of curiosity in his voice. "But they can defend themselves well and truly know their craft. Dan's designs for my animal theme challenge were exquisite. I will be commissioning the black German Shepherd suit he made. Ace and I will look divine at the next gala."
"I kind of want the bird dress," Steph cuts in with a chirp. "I know it's not purple, but it looked cool in concept. What bird breed did he pick for it?"
"It was the Lovebird," Damian answers. "Somehow his design was both elegant and accurate without seemingly childish as the bird it was based on."
Tim wonders if Damian may start to develop an interest in fashion or if he just appreciates drawings as an artist. "So should we be worried?"
"No. Fenton has unwillingly gathered too much attention online. People will notice if he disappears. Traffickers don't go for people that are easy to recognize." Jason sighs. "For now, they're safe, but not if Danny keeps wandering around like an easy target in those tailor outfits. He looks rich, even if it's only lower first class. That will attract a lot more muggings."
"Someone will have to get close to them-"
"I can do it!" Tim shouts, cutting off Bruce, then shrinks into his chair in mortification as the family chat dies. Trying to sound less eager, he hastily adds, "You know, since I'm benched. Light work to befriend the Fentons."
"Smooth Tim." Cass laughs over the coms with his other siblings snickering in the background, and sinks into his chair.
After a moment, Bruce sighs, "Alright, Tim, you can befriend one of them, but not until your turn to judge goes by. I don't want people claiming a conflict of interest there."
Hell yeah! Tim got the job!
"Of course, Bruce."
"And no flirting."

Rockin’ the House
Rockin’ the House
@ozmav Because we all need an uncle Jagged Stone.
It was another charity gala held by the Wayne Family; this one was raising funds for art programs across the world, and because it was for art there were artists of all types from all over, including the famous Rock’n’Roll artist Jagged Stone…and his guest.
 At the Gotham Congress Hall:
The Wayne Family was scattered all over the hall, talking various people, Damian was standing with his father; talking to someone he didn’t recognize.
“Father, I’m going to retrieve some punch.”  Damian announced to Bruce, waiting for him to nod before making his way over to the punch table.
Having retrieved and finished his drink Damian looked across the hall with a frown.  He had no issue for the cause of this gala; him being an artist himself, but many of these people were just trying to get into his family’s good graces.  Damian had just finished rolling his eyes at a snobby comment he over heard when something caught his eye; someone really.
She was lovely, she wore what looked to be a V-neck sleeveless black party dress that went to her knees, low silver heels, silver bracelets and neckless.  Her blue/black hair was in a bun with a silver hair; he couldn’t tell what the hair pin was at his distance.  She also looked uncomfortable, she was looking around and swaying back and forth.
Damian decided to introduce himself; if she was a harpy he would just walk away.  As he got closer to her he saw a few more details of her outfit. The hair pin was a treble clef and the silver neckless had a range of rainbow musical notes.  There was also a slight shimmer coming off her dress as she swayed.
“Hello Miss, how are you this evening?” Damian greeted when he reached her.
She startled at his voice.
“H-Hello, I’m Marinette Dupain-Cheng; I’m doing well and you?” Marinette greeted in return.
Damian was pleased to note she didn’t seem try and ‘charm him’ as soon as she saw him; and she had a cute French accent.  He reached out his hand and grabbed hers, brushing a kiss on the back of her knuckles; causing her to turn pink.
“I’m also doing well.  Might I ask are you an up and coming artist?  Or are you here with someone?” Damian asked.  As soon as he finished his question, he realized he sounded rude, but she didn’t see bothered by his bluntness and answered him.
“I’m just a guest of a guest, but I am working towards being a designer; so maybe I’ll get my own invite one day.”
Surprised is what Damian was by Marinette’s humility, most people here would be bragging about how ‘They’ll be the next greatest thing’ or ‘I came with this person, so I’m great as well’ or something similar.
“A designer?  What kind?”  Damian questioned.
“Fashion mostly, but I like designing for other things as well.”  Marinette admitted.
“Does that mean what you’re wearing now is your work Marinette?”
Marinette gave a shy nod.
“This is actually my most recent work; along with a suit I made for tonight, would you like to see my favorite part?”
“Certainly.”
At Damian’s agreement Marinette did a slow twirl, that’s when Damian got his answer about the slight shimmer from before.  As Marinette spun the light reflected off embroidery he hadn’t known was there. There was techno coloured musical notes of all sorts dancing and shining along the skirt and top.  Damian blinked, his breath taken from him.
“That is beautiful Marinette, this must have taken some time to complete.”
“A little, yeah, but it was worth it.”
“Is the suit here tonight like this?”  Damian asked.
“Yep.”  Marinette confirmed.
“You are a very hard-working individual Marinette and you design his lovely, I’m sure you’ll get your own invite one day.”
“Thank you.”
“Now, would the lovely Lady be willing to dance with me this evening?”  Damian asked, offering the palm of his hand.
“I’d love to.” Marinette said, almost placing her hand in his; she hesitated just before she did.
“Is there something wrong?” Damian worried.
“No…It’s just, I don’t know your name.”
Damian was stunned, she really didn’t know?
“I’m sorry Marinette, my name is Damian Wayne.”  Damian watched, gauging her reaction.
“It’s nice to meet you Damian!”  Marinette smile brightly, placing her hand in his.
She really didn’t know, this gave Damian a light-hearted feeling; he didn’t have to be the blood son of Bruce Wayne, he could just be Damian.
“Shall we dance Marinette?”
“Lets.”
Damian brought Marinette to the dance floor, keep her hand in his and placing the other on her waist; bringing her closer, not enough to be considered inappropriate, but just enough to be intimate.  As they began to dance Marinette faltered and stumbled, but as she got more comfortable with Damian and the movements, she became very graceful.  Damian spun and twirled her; showing off Marinette’s dress for all to see.
“How are you doing this?”
“Doing what?” Damian was confused.
“Making me dance like I’ve been doing it my entire life?” Marinette asked, “I’m a total klutz normally, this, this is new.”
“Marinette, I’m not doing anything.  This is you being relaxed and trusting me in my movements.  If you are a ‘total klutz’ normally, it is because your nervous and fear judgement.”
“Yeah…I guess I feel like that, how do you over come that Damian?” Marinette questioned.
“Simple, there is a quote I remember; ‘Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind’. There is nothing wrong with being nervous Marinette and anyone saying that there is, is trying to make you feel worse.”
“Damian…” Marinette sighed, “Thank you.”
“It is nothing but the truth,” Damian stated, “You are a beautiful talented woman, who is not afraid to work for her dreams; people will get jealous of that, but please don’t let it hinder you.”
“I’m not beautiful.” Marinette muttered.
“Yes, you are; you smile sweetly, your eyes are like the loveliest of blue belle flowers, and you made yourself a dress that is unique without being outrageous.” Damian complimented.
Marinette giggled and they continued dancing.
With Bruce a little after Damian left:
Bruce was making his way around the hall; talking to people along the way, when he ran into a very popular music artist in the Wayne household.
“Hello Jagged Stone, are you having fun?” Bruce asked.
“Hey Bruce, this is a cool gig; a little tame for my usual tastes, but anything that supports giving people a chance to rock out is good in my books.” Jagged enthused.
Bruce chuckled at the rack star.
“Thank you,” Bruce looked around, “Where is your partner and your second guest?”
“Penny couldn’t make; she got a bit of food poisoning you know?” Jagged informed, “And my other guest is my favorite designer; she’s really sweet, a bit shy but won’t back down from a challenge.”
“Is she one who designed your suit?” Bruce asked, “Because have to say I’m surprised you’re wearing something to mundane.”
Jagged’s suit was black dress pant, a white dress shirt, and a black suit coat with long tails, with black dress shoes.  He had silver cuff-links, a silver guitar pin on his lapel, but he had a techno colour tie that stood out.
“Mundane?  This suit ain’t mundane, it camouflaged; let me show you.”
Jagged turned on his heel, showing Bruce why the suit wasn’t mundane.  Turning around allowed the light to show the techno coloured music notes on his jacket and the staffs (The lines on a music sheet) running down each of his legs.
Bruce blinked, caught off guard by the hidden pattern.
“That is very impressive Jagged, your designer has some real talent.”
“I know, I met her when she was 14 and she keeps proving I can match the event while keeping my style.”
“She’s designed other things for you?” Bruce asked, being a designer for a rock star at 14 is nothing to sneeze at.
“She sure did, let me find her and I’ll introduce you, but fair warning she is going to quiz you on who made your suit.” Jagged chuckled, looking around, “I see her, she’s dancing with someone…Is he filtering with her?”
As Jagged started to make his way over, Bruce saw where Jagged was looking and was shocked to see his youngest son dancing with a lovely young lady; Jagged’s designer. Bruce caught up with Jagged just as he reached the pair.
“Hey Marinette, who’s your dance partner?” Jagged greeted.
With Damian and Marinette before they were interrupted:
Damian had never been to content, so happy, so…so…so something!  Marinette was so kind and sweet, she asked him about his suit, who designed it and was it comfortable.  She didn’t recognize his name, she didn’t ask how and why he was here, she just cared about him and who he was as a person.  Getting her number was a must.  Just as he was about to ask if he could have her number a voice cut him off.
“Hey Marinette, who’s your dance partner?”
Damian looked at the person who spoke and couldn’t believe what he saw.
It was Jagged Stone! His favorite music artist; along with his brothers, and he knew Marinette’s name?!
“Hi Jagged, this is Damian; he’s been keeping me company.” Marinette explained to the rock star.
“Hi Damian, I’m Jagged Stone and you’re dancing with my favorite designer.”
“Jagged!” Marinette scolded.
“What? It’s true isn’t it?” Jagged teased.
Damian took notice of Jagged’s suit and saw the same theme as Marinette’s.  Damian couldn’t believe it, Marinette was THE Jagged Stone’s designer, the one he liked to brag about on interviews; along with Clara Nightingale and some others.
“Marinette there is someone I want you to meet.” Jagged gestured to Damian’s father, “Mari meet Bruce Wayne, the host of this gala.”
Marinette reached out to shake his hand.
“Hello Mr. Wayne, it’s nice to meet you.”
“It’s nice to meet you as well Marinette; and please call me Bruce.  I see you’ve already met my youngest; Damian”
Marinette gave a slight jerk.
“Your youngest?” Marinette asked, looking over at Damian.
Damian wanted to curse at his father for outing him like that, but he knew that his father most likely wasn’t aware that Marinette didn’t know who he was.
“I’m sorry, I’m sure he wanted to tell you himself.” Bruce tried to lessen the impact.
“Don’t be sorry, its more my fault than anything.  I’m bad with names outside the fashion and music industries.” Marinette apologized “I’m also sorry if I bothered you Damian.”
Damian would not have her thinking that her sweet company was a bother to him.
“You were never a bother Marinette; your company is lovely and you yourself are a breath of fresh air.”
Marinette blushed.
Bruce raised his eye brow and smirked.
Jagged narrowed his eyes.
Jagged wasn’t sure he wanted this kid flirting with his almost niece and tried to change topics.
“Marinette I’ve told Bruce you’ve been designing for me since you were 14, but I didn’t want to brag about you too much without you there.”
“Jagged no.”
“You see Bruce Marinette has made my favorite glass”
“Jagged please…”
“All my album covers that have won an award,”
“Stop…”
“Serval posters, the most recent one coming out soon; being super awesome,”
“I’m begging you…”
“Many of my concert outfits, this suit; she made a dress for Penny too, but she couldn’t be here.”
“Jagged…”
“And that’s not counting the stuff she’s done for other people like Clara Nightingale.”
By the end of his rant Marinette was bright red and had her face in her hands.  But while Marinette was embarrassed, Damian was in awe; she’s done so much work and didn’t brag about it once.
“Jagged why…” Marinette asked.
“Well, you don’t talk about your accomplishments Marinette; so, I’m happy to do it for you!”
“That is quite the list Marinette, you should be proud.” Bruce praised.
Bruce noticed the look of admiration on Damian’s face and thought if all goes well that he would seeing and hearing more about Marinette.
“Were you the one who designed the ‘Hard Rock’ cover?” Damian asked, “I love that cover.”
Marinette gave a shy yes.
Bruce wanted to talk to Marinette a bit.
“Marinette,” Bruce said getting her attention, “May I please get your opinion on somethings.”
“Sure Bruce, what can I help you with?
As Bruce and Marinette talked, Jagged got Damian’s attention and spoke quietly to him.
“Look kid, I can see you like Mari; and she seems to like you, so I’m going to warn you now.  Mari is like family to me, you break her heart you will regret it.  I may not be able to do anything to you from business stand point, but I can trash your rep and make it stick; got it?”  Jagged warned.
Damian nodded his head in grim understanding.
“Marinette is a wonderful girl, I’d be a fool to break heart if she gave me chance sir and I like to think myself not a fool.”
Jagged slapped Damian on the shoulder.
“Good, we understand each other then.  Now let’s get back to your Father and Mari; listening to that girl plan is a rockin’ experience.”
Damian looked at Marinette; who excitedly describing something to his father, who was looking very impressed. Tonight, was going better than he could have hoped for.
The night wore on and Damian didn’t leave Marinette’s side.  Just before she and Jagged had to leave, she gave Damian something
“Here, just in case you want to talk or anything,” Marinette was holding out a piece of paper with her phone number and email on it, “B-But it’s fine if you don’t want it!”
“NO! I mean no, I’m happy to have it Marinette; just let me give you mine as well.”  Damian scrambled to find a piece of paper and pen.  He did find some and wrote down his information and gave it to Marinette.
As Marinette stepped into the car with Jagged she waved goodbye to Damian; a shy smile and a blush on her face.  Damian waited until the car was out of sight before he let out a sigh and looked at the information Marinette gave.
“Please try and wait until tomorrow to call her Damian.”
“Father!” Damian turned in surprise at the voice, “Would not call her tonight, she will be tried when she gets back to her hotel and she needs her rest.”
“Fair, wait until after breakfast as well then.” Bruce teased. “I’m looking forward to hearing more about Marinette, please keep me updated.”
“Father!”
 End
And that was Rockin’ the House.
 Also
 Extra:
A few days later at the Wayne household:
Alfred – Master Damian, there is a package for you.
Damian – *Takes package* Thank you Alfred.
Damian opens the package to reveal the new Jagged Stone poster that hasn’t been released yet; signed and everything.
Dick - *Cereal spit take*
Jason – How the h*ll did Demon Spawn get that!?
Damian – It’s a gift from someone precious.
Tim – Precious?! You’re calling someone precious!? And who’s the second signature?
Dick, Jason and Tim - *Look closer at the poster*
Dick – Who’s Marinette?
Tim – That’s Jagged’s favorite and best designer; she rarely signs anything!  How in the world did you get that Brat!?
Bruce – *Proud dad that’s wants to embarrass his youngest* That’s because he danced all night with her at the gala; he got her number too.
Dick, Jason and Tim – WHAT?!
Damian – FATHER!
Jason – There’s no way! Prove it!
Alfred – Would pictures work Master Jason?  I have serval.
Damian – ALFRED! WHEN?

Dick Grayson is by far my favourite comics character...but yeah very few of his comics have been able to get away from that Batman lite feeling. I love the idea of him as fun Batman, but with Bruce around I'm not sure if that wouldn't just cement him as a "second rate Batman" even more so. How would you think is best to that pitfall? Beyond just only being written by excellent creators, what would be your guidelines for Dick as Batman in a DCU with Bruce?
It would definitely be a tough needle to thread, but I think it could be done. If only because, again, the MCU is going to start having to show people giving up roles to successors, and the world at large will be introduced to Miles Morales in 2018 with his animated movie. So the public is about to get a lot more amenable to the idea of more than one person going by the same superheroic name, and for all the reasons I had to say before, I think it would be worth it if you’re going to keep Dick around as a major and superheroically active figure of that world. Which you basically have to because A. He’s a great character, and B. Even if he wasn’t, he’s the original Robin, he can never totally go away.
Anyway, the obvious first step is to differentiate them visually, and it never sat right with me during the year of their co-ownership of the title that Dick had the plain black bat-symbol, while Bruce had the bright yellow. I wouldn’t want to fiddle with the design too radically - nothing would signal Dick as being a subsidiary Batman more than him having a weird variation while Bruce wore the regular suit - so building off the base Alex Ross suggested below seems to me like a good place to go:
Tumblr media
Throw in the bat-shaped belt-buckle and turn the black of the bodysuit back to gray (I get what Ross is going for there, but it doesn’t totally work), and I think you have a winner; the solid, vibrant splash of color with a more traditionally superheroic logo would go a long way in differentiating him from the modern Bruce while still being visibly Real Batman. If you do want to mess around with it a little more, the proposed Morrison/Quitely redesign before they settled on something more traditional wouldn’t be the worst either:
Tumblr media
Well, the Batman redesign at least. No clue what they were thinking with Robin; even with the nostalgia factor in play for the Earth-Two suit, that design has never been anything other than atrocious.
While we’re on the costume, I’d also rework the cape a bit. A little shorter (gotta maximize the opportunities for showing off Mr. Grayson’s most marketable assets), and a little less like a cloak. His suit in general would probably be more on the side of tights than the modern armor vogue, but the cape in particular would have a pretty different functionality than Bruce’s, more lightweight and flexible. Bruce generally relies on his these days for gliding, but Dick’s the one in the business of leaping from rooftop to rooftop and I imagine he’d rely more swinging on the grapple than Bruce ever did, especially after his cowl-less years as Nightwing. Instead, the cape is there for the visual effect: not to intimidate like Bruce, but to obscure his movements. He’d still be dishing out all the flashy moves he’s made his signature, but the cape would be flapping all around him as he did it, making it hard for a casual observer to see the precise movement of his arms and legs. Along with making him harder to predict, it’d make him look like a raggedy whirling dervish, more cape than body, which would go a long way in establishing him as a monster of the shadows in the minds of criminals when so much of his aesthetic would otherwise be lighter. I know he’s said in the past he isn’t a fan of the cape so it’d be a bit odd to integrate it into his fighting style so completely, but it really is part of the package, and he said in Incorporated he was getting fonder of it again anyway. And it wouldn’t be hard on artists either; even those not going for the full effect could still show him holding the edges of the cape in his fists, as opposed to Bruce either being fully cowled-up or going straight blunt-force.
Tumblr media
As for his actual actions, I don’t think him smiling and having fun is at all at odds with working as Batman. Smiling Batman can be a creepy Batman to the criminals he’s fighting, while still comforting those he’s helping. Snyder’s Batman is actually a pretty decent model; he’s a little quippy and chatty as Bruce for my tastes, but his take on Batman with a few minor alterations would be a pretty good fit for Dick in the costume. Just steer Grayson a little less Spider-Man and a little more 80s action movie star, and you’re in the ballpark.
Beyond that, it’s mostly just basic setup. Have Dick focus more on weird kung-fu adventures in a sprawling neon-splashed Gotham and solving fun themed crimes, while Bruce does more straight-ahead detective work and darker, acid-tinged battles against flamboyant monsters. Not that heavy, bloody mysteries should be barred from Dick’s side of Gotham, or that Bruce shouldn’t be wrapped up in lighter escapades now and again - they both need the variety - but in terms of general guidelines I think that would work just fine; even Morrison’s time with Bruce tended to focus on the darker side of Batman’s day-to-day, while Dick lends himself easily to the more conventionally comic-bookey side of things. They can regularly share a few villains like Two-Face, while Dick already has a decent base to build on with the likes of Pyg, Flamingo, Jim Gordon Jr., Raptor and (if you really must) Deathstroke. Have them co-lead Batman, with Bruce headlining Detective Comics and Dick getting Batman & Robin with Damian. Bruce maybe gets an extra title on top as the classic Batman, while Dick gets the publicity of being the one on the Justice League. I realize that’s a radically different status quo than anything that’s ever been sustained before for such a major character for any real time, but like I said, I think it’ll soon be much more practical, it’d offer more variety for readers, and it makes Dick far more viable and profitable as an ongoing lead. Unless you’re willing to go full scorched-Earth with the continuity and make Dick Robin again, it’s at this point more trouble than it’s worth to struggle to keep a cultural icon like him in a subsidiary position forever, so unless you’re going to scrap him like they originally planned for Infinite Crisis, he really should just be legitimately moved into the big leagues.

What’s the Most Important Lesson You’ve Learned Along Your Journey?
Every twist in our story, challenge we face, and obstacle we overcome is an important part of our story.  These difficulties make us stronger and wiser and prepare us for what’s ahead.  As we grow and succeed we may imagine that soon the challenges will fade away, but in our conversations with business owners, artists, creatives, academics, and others we have learned that the most common experience is that challenges never go away – instead they get more complex as we grow and succeed.  Our ability to to thrive therefore depends heavily on our ability to learn from our experiences and so we are asking some of the city’s best and brightest: What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Stephen Lohoefer | Pastor, The Grove Church
The most important lesson I’ve learned in my journey thus far has also been the most difficult to learn. That lesson is patience— patience that storms will pass; patience that good things will come. Over and over again, God has shown me that most of the time, the thing I want the most will come in time. I just have to learn to trust the process.

Dennis Johnson | Insurance specialist and Forex investor
Never avoid being uncomfortable. To deny uncomfortably is to deny growth.
@Gabe.Jade
Emily Le | Makeup Artist & Beauty Influencer
@arialised
The most important lesson I’ve learned is self-love. Building yourself up, and embracing all that you are and accepting it. You learn new things about yourself as you reach deeper into your mind. Sometimes negative things are rooted deeply in us and we do not realize it, such as insecurities about our selves. Self-love has many benefits, & happiness is one of them.

Diego Merel | Traveler and Sales Rep
I’ve learned to find happiness within myself rather than finding happiness in other people. I started making healthier choices regarding my personal health and everything around me started to snowball from there.
@lobo_chicco
Angie McComb | aka #Solargirltx with her SolarBulldog, Lola Lu
I have learned that staying authentic matters, that being your true self in any situation pays out tenfold and I’ve learned that everyone has a story. I have clients in multi-million dollar homes and I have clients with disconnect notices worrying about how to pay the electricity bill, but the relationships and the human element are the same. I have chosen a career path that’s designed to help people and that’s my reward at the end of every day.
@SolarGirlTX @SolarGirlTX
Garrick Thomas | Singer | Actor | Model
The most important lesson I have learned on this journey is to never lose yourself and keep fighting because your time is near. We want to give up when things aren’t going our way and that’s when you have to push yourself harder to strive for your ultimate goal.

The most important lesson I’ve learned on my journey was realizing that sometimes failure can be necessary and the best thing that can happen. Getting knocked down is sometimes necessary to make you get up and be the Stronger, Smarter & Better person you’re supposed to be! Always keep working on my craft and myself because if I can consistently make myself better then everything else I do will evolve as well!

When you are intentionally focused on your goals, you will be amazed on what you can accomplish. Every success book, entrepreneur, and major business owner out there will tell you the one principle that got them to their level of success. The principle is they chose themselves. You are in control of your life so take action in moving forward in your journey of success. I am honored to have an excellent team of entrepreneur brothers who are all liked minded individuals with work ethics that are unmatched. We are a team so this article is just as important for them. Flavio Venancio | tattoo artist
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that, first of all, you have to do what you love otherwise it’s a waste of life. Second, no matter how good you are in your field, there is always something new to learn and improve. Learning is really a never-ending process and you have to keep that in mind to succeed. Tattooing is my passion, is what I love to do, but I don’t take it for granted. For me, I want and I need to evolve every day and I do it with pleasure. I’ve been tattooing for over 15 years and I’ve worked in different countries like Indonesia, Japan, Australia, Brazil. I love being around different cultures, different art and learning new techniques. The more I learn, more I realize how much is there to learn. The better you are in your art, the more people expect from you, it’s a challenge and I love it.
@flavio_tattoo
Joy Smallwood | Resin Artist
Jadon Smallwood
I am a perfectionist and my own worst critic. I’ve had to learn that art isn’t about perfection, it’s about creating something to share with others. I have been shocked by the enthusiasm around some of my pieces which I was not particularly fond of myself. I’ve learned that everybody has different tastes, you just need to find the right audience to share it with. Lastly, I’ve learned not to focus on making sales, instead I focus on building relationships with people!

Ian “KWAME” Asibey | Musician | Drummer
Michael Barrera
The most important lesson I’ve learned in my journey so far is patience and preparation . I’ve been playing drums for over 13 years now and joining Artemis funk (a 7 piece band from Arlington, TX) was has been a great learning experience. I’ve become a better listener and someone who is a lot more organized in terms of planning. Scheduling rehearsals and gigs with 6 other people be complicated; working with personal and work schedules, etc. I realized like everything that’s with having its patience and understanding that helps things move forward. When I first saw the band together they already had a drummer, but I knew these were the people I wanted to work with. The opportunity came for me to fill in for the drummer, and I was prepared for it; practicing and going to jam sessions as much as I could. Long story short a month later I was asked to be the permanent drummer. Playing with them ever since has been fantastic, but patience and preparation is a must. With 7 different opinions on almost everything we discuss, we have to be able to listen to one another and have enough patience and empathy to understand where the person is coming from. No matter what it is if we’re patience and prepared to tackle the situation, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.
@ian.asibey  @kingkwame95 @artemisfunk @iangoinskiin
Autumn Taylor | Product Developer and Owner of BERE Lingerie
During journey thus far , my most important lesson is to take everything day by day. I always had the tendency to rush into things I wanted most and ended up failing due to my impatience , but now as I go day by day I can now say I am where I need to be at the right time and will get to where I need exactly when I am supposed to. I no longer rush things that are set to come later or stress things out of my control.
@Aavum  @berecolingerie
Tasha Olorunnisomo | Love coach and Motivational Speaker
The most important lesson I have learned so far in my journey is never let fear stop you from accomplishing your goals in life. Life will have many challenges but you will overcome all of them if you do not quit. Do not allow anyone to stop you from accomplishing your lifelong dream, you are worth it.
@livelovelifecoachtasha

@visionbymitch
Comparison can kill a calling. Comparing yourself to another person does nothing but delay your own growth. If your time is spent focused on what someone else is doing, you’re wasting time that is be better spent prioritizing what you could be doing. What you focus on most is what you’ll bring to fruition. There is a distinct difference between learning from other’s experiences and comparing your success to other’s. You cannot compare your process season to someone else’s winning season. Don’t cripple your creativity with comparison.

Annaly Mawire | Worship Leader
The secret to a victorious life is praise. Life brings hardships and battles. We bring our own defeat when we focus on our circumstances. Praise and worship does the opposite. It keeps you focused on God. Who He is. What He has done and what He will do. It is the language of faith. Praise speaks life to a lifeless situation. It speaks power to a powerless, beat down attitude. Praise takes the supernatural victory and materializes it. This lifestyle of praise in the middle of storms is the secret to our victory. Proclaiming the power and faithfulness of God, that He is working on our behalf through His Word, becoming so convinced of it, brings peace through the chaos and hardships. It is the greatest weapon we have against the trials of life. God moves where His Spirit dwells. His Spirit dwells where He is praised.

Kate Lyubarsky | Entrepreneur and Owner of The Dapper Dog Shop
The most important lesson I’ve learned so far is that you have to hustle. To start a business you need to be passionate and ready to put in the time. It can be long days and late nights, but if you love it then it’s totally worth it. The more effort you put into it, the more you will learn and grow, and the more rewarding it will be when you succeed. Work hard, be patient and tell yourself you can do this.

Over the past 15 years as an entrepreneur, the most important lesson I have learned is you can’t get anywhere far without great people. I’ve learned a lot about my journey so far. An important lesson I’ll always keep with me is someone is always watching, so the content, vibes and advice you put out are very meaningful. @dj_ward9
Julian Palafox | Barber | Owner of Revolt Barbershop
I think the most important lesson I’ve learned along this journey is to run towards every challenge that scares me. If everything I wanted came easy I wouldn’t appreciate it. Also, to always remain true to myself and ALWAYS give the glory to God for the things I do accomplish. I’d also like to thank my loyal clientele for always supporting me, and most of all my staff because without them I wouldn’t be here.

Kambri Whitney | Owner of Bring Me Bronze- Mobile Spray Tans and Teeth Whitening
Mindset is everything- when you are intentionally focused on the things you want, it’s amazing what you can accomplish. You are able to achieve more than you could imagine, all by adjusting your mindset and focusing. Choosing to be happy and choosing to be successful comes down to active persuit in every decision. On the flip side, if you choose to be angry and offended, you are focusing on the negative and will just draw more of that energy and regress further from your goals and wishes. Your reality is truly shaped by your mind and the energy that you put towards your thoughts each day. I find this very empowering to know I can control my future by refocusing my mindset and thoughts. It really is that easy, test it out!
@kambrilynae  @bringmebronze
Phoebe O’Connor | Leasing Agent and Sports Psych Graduate Student
The most important thing I have learned thus far is to put your absolute heart into everything and have 0 regrets about it. Too many times we bombard ourself with “what if’s” and doubt ourselves and our decisions because of what everyone else is doing. I try to fully embody myself as a go getter without any limits. Love hard, work hard, and pray hard, you will see results and don’t worry about the outcome.
@feebs513 @feebs513
Jessica Navarrete | fashion blogger and life enthusiast
If I’ve learned anything throughout my journey, it’s that it’s truly not about the destination, it’s about the ride. Sometimes we’re so focused on getting to our goals and racing to the finish line, we forget to just enjoy where we are now. It’s so important to enjoy where you are now.

Crystal Salvador | Balayage & Color Correction Specialist
Growing up I was always passionate about the beauty industry, giving credit to my mother who was also a cosmetologist and beauty guru in my eyes, but I must also say my fire started when I was a teenager battling with low self-esteem. Pampering myself through my hairstyles gave me confidence and felt it was a calling to do the same for others feeling the same way. I still remember picking up my first pair of shears at the age of 12 and giving a layered haircut to someone, it just came so naturally, of course, I loved it! Regis was where I was able to get my feet wet, starting as a front desk receptionist, while I attended evening classes for cosmetology, as a front desk this meant many responsibilities which included washing towels, cleaning, inventory, and helping stylists with much more. I was determined to learn and I carried a small notepad with me everywhere because I was hungry for knowledge, I absorbed everything my sponge feeling brain would allow! Not caring what it took but knowing I would get there some day. After graduation I was able to move on to the floor as a stylist, lucky to say the salon manager mentored me and took me under her wing, allowing me to grow more with my skills. A couple months later I was offered an opportunity I did not want to pass up although I had been already on the floor as a stylist but I wanted to learn more so I began assisting in uptown. I spoke with the salon owner there which also became my mentor and I told her how I wanted to try and see if I could become a commission-based stylist, she gave me encouraging words and told me that I was an amazing stylist to go for it. I then gathered my small clientele and moved closer to home Garland at the time. Now this is where I learned that you have to grow thick skin, how to build and keep a good clientele and how important good communication skills is. It was a true struggle having to balance being a mother and trying to grow as an entrepreneur, but glad to say it was all worth it. Now I have my own suite and my journey like many others has not been easy but rewarding to say the least. In this process I have learned from every single person I have met, and had the privilege to serve, allowing me to also help empower women. No appointment goes without moments of tears and great laughs. I love that my clients find trust in me for support, encouragement or just someone to vent with, which led to me also aiming for my Family counseling degree. I have felt every laugh and tear my clients share, giving me the greatest lesson of all through this voyage. Sometimes I can’t help but to feel tired and a willingness to give up but then remember why I started this. I’ve had the privilege to serve clients with final wishes by getting their hair done by me and those that I have taught me that I have purpose in this industry and there is a reason why this fire was planted in me. One of the main reasons I became a stylist is to help others find their inner beauty as I have with myself. I love learning to evolve with the many change’s the hair industry brings, it allows me to learn new techniques and to always satisfy my clients needs. All that I have learned has taken me to where I stand now and passionately loving what I do.

I hate the saying “be yourself because everyone else is taken” because I feel that it’s so overdone but it’s also incredibly true. The most important lesson I’ve learned in my journey so far is to be yourself. In life, and especially in the Instagram world, it’s ridiculously easy to compare yourself to others. It’s very easy to think “I’ll never be as pretty as her, as skinny as her, have as amazing photos as her..” and the list goes on and on. I’ve learned from my own personal experience that you can’t do anything but be yourself and embrace it. Maybe you want to share a picture that isn’t absolutely perfect – do it!! Get real on your stories and say what you feel or think (within reason). I don’t think you’ll ever regret being true to yourself!

Heather Rose | Airbrush Artist
The most important lesson I’ve learned so far is to never forget how it feels to be on the other side of the airbrush gun. In 3 years I’ve done around 4K tans, it’s easy to get into my mode and just get it done! Remembering how vulnerable you feel getting undressed in front of a stranger and how whether a client is tanning for a wedding, trip or event, the result will either make or break the experience. I often tell my employees during training that every tan is a wedding tan, meaning every airbrush deserves the detail and attention of an important event, no matter what the client is tanning for.

I’ve learned to find happiness within myself rather than finding happiness in other people. I started making healthier choices regarding my personal health and everything around me started to snowball from there.

The most important lesson I have learned so far in my journey is never let fear stop you from accomplishing your goals in life. Life will have many challenges but you will overcome all of them if you do not quit. Do not allow anyone to stop you from accomplishing your lifelong dream, you are worth it.

Whether it is a younger kid looking to follow my footsteps or a peer seeking inspiration for his or hers next outfit or workout. So always be a positive contribution!

If I’ve learned anything throughout my journey, it’s that it’s truly not about the destination, it’s about the ride. Sometimes we’re so focused on getting to our goals and racing to the finish line, we forget to just enjoy where we are now. It’s so important to enjoy where you are now.
