Shuffle your 'on repeat' playlist and post the first ten tracks, then tag ten people
I was tagged by @heresluck!
I don’t really have an “on repeat” playlist, so I threw together my different favorite playlists (mostly sorted by vibe, emotion, or which fandom I associate with which songs) and shuffled them into a giant “list of bangers to belt in the car.” I skipped repeated artists (look, Ani DiFranco’s late 90s-early 00’s run was *formative*)
(1) Because the Night (Live MTV Unplugged) - 10,000 Maniacs
(2) Parachute (Serbian Ghenea mix) - Ingrid Michaelson
(3) Darkness, Darkness - Richard Shindell
(4) Hail Mary Shy of Redemption- Eddie From Ohio
(5) Pick Yer Nose - Ani Difranco
(6) When I Go - Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer
(7) Ladder - Joan Osborne
(8) You Gotta Be - Des’ree
(9) Pilentze Pee (Pilentze Sings) - Bulgarian Women’s Chorus
(10) Scarborough Fair - The King’s Singers ft. Manuel Barrueco
I feel 2000s pop is underrepresented in this sample, so please allow the additions of the first two that shuffled up:
(11) Sober - P!nk
(12) If I Were a Boy - Beyoncé
The most played non-Hamilton musical on my iPhone is either the 2009 Idina Menzel/Josh Groban CHESS or the 1998 OST for THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. That feels representative.
The most played classical piece is the 1955 version of Glenn Gould playing Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which is directly wired to affect my nervous system like Valium.
If you have noticed that I haven’t listened to much new music, well spotted! @heresluck and @kouredios are working on me, as are a couple of other friends, but I have been remiss about putting together new playlists, as I have spent most of the last two years listening to audiobooks (especially the Murderbot Diaries and the Goblin Emperor books).
Tagging @megastoat, @cincoseis, @white-throated-packrat, @fremedon, @agentreynard, @dsudis , @changingthingslikeleaves, @bgoodg and @cereta if they’ve thus far escaped being tagged by someone else and would like to play. But anyone is welcome!

omg I completely forgot about this until now but if it's the week of Trans Music TM boy do I have something that will fuck you up
(first of all cw for a trans person dying)
There was this folk/country duo that released music under the name "Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer". One of them was a closeted trans woman (or possibly transfeminine nonbinary person) and this was brought to light years after her death from a heart attack by Tracy, the other half of the duo and apparently the only person who ever knew.
Bearing that in mind, listen to Farewell To Saint Dolores. Kills me! For obvious reasons!
"Can you stay until tomorrow, there is no one here to save.
So spoke our lady of eternal sorrow, from the shelter of the cave.
She took me to the jesse house of women, and sanctified me there.
And the ageless face that witnessed me for certain, when my own could not be found."
------
And actually I'm also gonna recommend Hey Diddle Diddle, a sweet little happy ditty about how life could be so simple and happy, especially if you just fit in. How for some people it really is that easy and the world is so lovely. There are no complicated things to worry about and it's wonderful. We could have that, here is what it's like, but also it's a fantasy world with fantasy characters.
I think this is also very much deserving of the title of "fucks you up music" even though it is very cheerful and almost comforting!
I love that trans music week TM has become a thing. Also that description fucked me up a LOT. Something about queer folks living in hiding their whole lives, but relying on some special person to truly know them... history man.

Favorite Albums of All Time: 30-21
Favorite Albums of All Time: 30-21
Having listened to every album on the Rolling Stone list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, I’m making my own list.  This list will be only 250 albums, although I had to make some tough cuts.  The list includes a mix of works of musical genius with the pure nostalgia of some albums I’ve loved throughout my life.  As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts about these albums and what your favorite…

Well, that was an hour of effort completely destroyed by a bad connection. Okay, nine albums take two (short version). Tagged by @sharpbutsoft
Tagging @greenlikethesea @motsimages @tinyyellowflowers-blog @nico-di-angelfish and anyone else wants to share music
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Titles and links under the cut
Sitting Pretty by The Academic - thanks @sharpbutsoft for introducing me to this band. Favorite track: Don't Take It Personally
Ghost of Vroom 3 - New Ghost of Vroom album, of course I love it. Mike Doughty fangirl since 1996. Favorite track: Yesterday in California
The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack - Well I wrote Rocky Horror themed fanfic this year, what else was I going to listen to? Favorite track: Touch-A Touch-A Touch Me
Drum Hat Buddha by Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer - This album is essentially perfect. Carter's songs about small town America also inspire a lot of my Stranger Things fics (someday I will write the essays about Tillman Co. and Ordinary Town). Favorite track: all of them, but I'll go with 236-6132
Ruby Vroom by Soul Coughing - Soul Coughing's best album, not that they have a bad one. Favorite track: changes every few weeks but for now it's Down to This
American Beauty by The Grateful Dead - Best Dead album. Favorite track: Sugar Magnolia
Psyence by hide - If you don't know who hide is, you're missing out. Favorite track: Genkai Haretsu
Mini World by Indila - I got this album at the tail end of last year after I accidentally clicked on the wrong youtube video and really liked what I heard. Favorite track: Dernière Danse
Philip Glass' Dracula soundtrack performed by Kronos Quartet - Philip Glass is great. Having a favorite track doesn't make sense here, but I'll include a clip for consistency

So @elvisgrace tagged me to share five songs I listen to, and I'm chronically terrible at remembering to do these things (oh look, there's one where Suzume tagged me back in September) but there's only one way to fix that!
So, well.... I'm a longtime weeb and I go through long stretches of not really listening to music and occasional acquisition periods, and I could easily just fill this up with anime opening songs - hell, with 90s anime opening songs - but to try to represent the kind of stuff I listen to:
Idol - Yoasobi
Kageboushi ~ Itsuka Mita Yume - by Hinayukki
Terra's theme by Nobuo Uematsu
Earth as a Character Gallery, one of the duel songs from Revolutionary Girl Utena
Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer - Red (Elegy)
So you have: Yoasobi, a recent discovery; Vocaloid; JRPG soundtracks in general and FF6 in particular; Utena duel songs; and spare, cryptic folk music.
This is why I always used to panic and act like a total weirdo when coworkers would ask me "so what kind of music do you listen to?"

Tagged by @myrskytuuli. Thank you so much, friend.
Rules: Tag anyone you would like to know/catch up with.
Last song: Tanglewood Tree by Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer. Great song by a great songwriter, also Carter was trans but died before publically transitioning.
Last movie: Aliens from 1986. Great horror film and worthy sequel to the 1979 original. Love Ripley so much.
Currently watching: hmm, probably My Life as a Teenage robot. I love Jenny so much, my daughter.
Currently reading: The Iliad by Homer (in swedish translation by Ingvar Björkeson). reading it to prepare to read Wrath Goddess Sing, the novel with trans woman Achilles. About the Illiad, Love The Drama of it all, and the poetry is often beautiful in even in translation. Not that there aren't some boring parts, I almost died from boredom during the catalogue of ships gfhfh.
I tag @mutalieju and @clove-pinks but only if you really want to ofc.

When I am Space Pope, I'm going to commission a website or something where you can plug in a video game you've been playing and it will spit out book titles that will feel the same as the game. There will be filters so you can match on setting, themes, characters, or just simply vibes. This is a thing I always want when I get into a game and it is so difficult to find.
There will also be a similar site for matching books to music, because someday I will find a book that feels like Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer's 41 Thunderer, and then I will die content.

Music for the Soul
What do you listen to while you work? I’ve selected Pandora on my iPhone and have the JBL speaker Bluetooth connected, all set to play one of my favorite stations. What I listen to depends much on how I feel, both physically and mentally, and spiritually. Sometimes, I want to rock out to Bruce Springsteen, while at other times, I need to chill, so I tune in to my Dave Carter/Tracy Grammer…

For writer truth or dare: 🌵🍄🦴
🌵: So, I don't really stream music, and I'm less of a playlist person than an album person. In the spirit of the ask I will share this youtube playlist of Der Vampyr because I love this opera and this recording of it in particular. There's also Drum Hat Buddha, an album by Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer which has a lot of Stranger Things fic vibes to it.
🍄: Well, a lot of my steddie headcanons make it into my fics, so I'm going to switch this up. The only romantic couple we see in Stranger Things that I think is still together at the ten years later point is Lucas and Max. Max has to go through a lot of therapy (physical and psychological), and she nearly dumps Lucas a couple of times during the early stages, but ultimately they stay together. Lucas teaches highschool (and coaches the school's basketball team) while Max becomes a disability rights advocate (she does go to law school, but her career really starts when she wants to go back to Hawkins High and there are no ramps). They never have kids, but they never make a point of trying to. Max calls Lucas "Stalker" at their thirtieth anniversary dinner. Lucas loves it.
🦴: Well, most of what I write is fanfiction, so yes, obviously. I would not be writing Stranger Things fic without Stranger Things. But also lots of other media. Probably most notably The Rocky Horror Picture show, as I wrote Let the Sun and Light Come Streaming Into My Life about Steve's love for that movie. I couldn't have written Time Out of Mind without the Days of Future Past comic, or the many time travel fix-it fics that sent Steve back in time to save Eddie I read before thinking how fun it would be to send Robin back instead. Some influences are less obvious, such as how Dave Carter's music and my love of Twin Peaks keep distorting the wholesome presentation of Hawkins the show tries to give us. Reveal the Yearning Desert was greatly but very indirectly inspired by @sharpbutsoft's Road to Nowhere (I think the only notable similarity is that they're steddie fics, but my fic absolutely would not exist without hers). On the other side of the spectrum, I'm still plugging away at a steddie fic that is so heavily inspired by Chandler's The Long Goodbye it will spoil the ending of the novel. When I finish it I may have to post it as a crossover.
