Harry is MY boyfriend; you don’t tell me who to love-!

(Part two)

(Aricka x Harry Hook. Aricka and the Hero Kids. Aricka and the Isle Kids. Aricka and Chad Charming.)

(Note: in my Descendants canon Emma Swan is the teen daughter of Snow and David Charming, of the White Kingdom. Killian is the son of Will and Elizabeth Turner. )

Evie, Aricka and Harry stumbled into the room the Charming twins shared together (their mother had payed the school to allow them to be in the same dorm), and Mal magically locked the door behind them. Aricka was pulled onto her bed, which currently housed Chad, Uma, Gil, Aziz, and also now herself and Harry.

Harry pushed her so she was leaning against her twin; and he surprised everyone (excluding herself and Uma) by laying his head down on her shoulder, arms wound tightly as possible around her middle. She busied herself by running her fingers through his too perfectly gelled hair, mussing it up back to his usual style, noting that Chad was undoing her own perfect French braids- all twelve of them, symbolizing the hour her mother ran down the palace steps when she was still just a scullery maid- and detangling every knot and snarl he came across with a gentle hand.

Mal and Evie were warding the room, while Ben and Jay and Doug were discussing how to keep everyone in the room safe until the noise died down. Uma was doing the opposite of Chad and was braiding Gil’s hair, the golden curls easily manageable and braidable it seemed. Aziz was texting furiously- probably letting his awesome protective parents know that he and his friends and cousins were okay and all in one place.

Carlos, Lonnie, Audrey, Jane L, Jane C, Emma, and Killian were all on Chad’s bed, Carlos being wedged between Jane LaFae and Audrey, both girls asking if he was alright and seeming very protective of him.

Aricka’s stomach churned and she felt like she might cry. She was suddenly aware of a presence in front of her and she looked up to see Azalea hovering nearby, a worried look on xeir face. The look was enough to make her face crumble and the first few tears fall down her cheeks. “Oh- oh no,” she mumbled, “my- my makeup- it’s- I’m- oh no-!”

Harry immediately sat up, hands coming up to cup her face, thumbs wiping away the salty water slipping from her eyelids, as her shoulders began to shake. “Love, you’re not tainted, not dirty. Crying is natural and healthy and your body needs this release to move forward. Just let it happen. You’re safe here; everyone here loves you.”

“But my mascara- my eyeshadow- I’m dirty, Harry. Unclean. Gross….”

“You are absolutely not gross,” Evie says, tugging one of Aricka’s hands from Harry’s grip, “I cry all the time, am I dirty? Or unclean?”

“N-no-!” Aricka cried, face pale and eyes red rimmed. “Evie you’re beautiful and lovely and smart and kind and-!”

“Then so are you. Purely because you are an Auradon girl who never stops trying to be better and to understand.”

“I can’t- Chad- she said- she said-!”

“I got this,” Chad says, “excuse me a sec Harry.” The pirate moved over so Chad could take his spot. “Hey sis-a-roo. Sis. Sissy. Twinny. Look at me. I’m right there with you. I don’t think what our mother taught us was right. If we were gonna be rejected the second we showed a flaw or imperfection everyone would’ve already left but look up.” She shook her head. “Ariellllllll….” He sang. “Come on tiny. Teeny. Itsy-bitsy…. Starburst?” Nothing. “Butterfingers?” The name got her to finally look up at Chad only. “Look around us. Please?”

She glances around the room to see what Chad saw-

Everyone was still there. Watching her, granted, and yes that was humiliating all in itself but they-

They didn’t think she was loathsome for having runny makeup and nose. For having a torn skirt. For having a bright red slap imprint on her cheek.

“Chad…” she whispered. “You- they- I don’t understand-?”

“Oh, evil,” Mal says, “of course you knew how to comfort us about our crappy parents; you’ve got a crappy mom.” The purple haired demigoddess Fae suddenly marched over and wrapped the pale-blonde princess in a protective but careful embrace, “my mom used to do the same thing- act all flowery and sweet one minute and the next she was pulling the rug from underneath me.” Aricka was shaking again, face pressed firmly against Mal’s light purple jacket. “You’re une princesse guerrière, and I am going to be your fée protectrice.”

Aricka gulps and whispers, “You are ma reine des fées, Mal. Have been for a while. Ma reine dragon, as well.”

“She’s right about that, min modige kriger,” Uma says, wrapping herself around Chad, “while your perfect parents tried to take our voices- while my mother stole voices- Aricka, you GAVE us your voice. Gave us A voice. You spoke for us when we couldn’t or risk being sent back to the Isle.”

“U-Uma, I wish you had been born here; safe, wish we could’ve all been friends from the beginning,” Aricka croaked; and then Uma was hugging her, saying,

“That’s why you were our first chosen friend here. You never once saw us as different, you saw us as friends you just hadn’t truly met yet. You saw us as equals. You explained to us how you worked, how life here worked.”

“She’s right, meine Kriegerprinzessin,” Evie said, adding to everyone calling Aricka a warrior princess. “We chose you.”

“Since the moment we met you’ve been my compass, my treasure, mo chridhe, love, nobody is replacing you.”

“Chad; we didn’t forget you, you’re every bit as dear as your twin. You both helped us in different ways.” Then CHAD was crying and Aricka gripped her brother and then every VK and Hero Kid was in a giant cuddle heap.

“I- I can’t believe she hit me,” Aricka whispers. “She’s never hit me before-,”

“And if she knows what’s good for her she never will again,” Jay said, affirmed by Azalea.

“I’m going to make protection bracelets for you and Chad; if she tries anything you’ll just have to activate the beam and we can teleport to you or vice versa,” Mal swore.

“Same here princess, you and all the hero kids, you’re all getting some form of a protection charm,” Uma adds.

“I want one for Aricka Page,” Seb White suddenly spoke up. “She can handle herself but- it would make me feel better. Knowing we can find each other.”

“We can make that happen,” Azalea assured. “Everyone in this room has done so much to help us it’s the least we can do.”

“Indeed,” Evie says. “I will make sure that all of you get something of ours to ensure everyone knows you’re under our protection.”

“Hey-um-princess Aricka-?” Gil. Aricka wiggled up so she could see the blond pirate. “Those things you said back there- did you really mean that?”

Aricka and Chad don’t even glance at each other as they both move over to Gil, moving as two parts of the same brain almost. Aricka slowly reaches for Gil and then when he didn’t flinch or move away she wrapped her arms carefully around him, Chad doing the same. “Gilly…” she says. “You are the sunshine of this group. We need sunshine to thrive. We all love and need you, Sunny. Don’t doubt your place here. You try so hard; and you’re so Good. You just absorb everything good like a sponge, and you smile at the smallest pleasures. I’m proud to call you my friend. My sunshine. My Gil.”

“And you’re super strong and athletic,” Chad adds. “You’re going to be one of the best graduating Tourney players in Auradon. And one of the best swords and shields players. I bet you could even learn to be a super amazing chef, with all the recipes you’ve been working on.”

By now the “sunshine” of the group was crying too, and Aricka sent Uma a panicked apologetic glance, only for the teal-haired pirate to wave her on. “It’s okay Gil, they mean it,” Uma asserts. “Aricka and Chad only say what they mean. If they say you’re sunshine, they’re just affirming what we all think and know.”

“Oh wow…” Gilly said, glancing at the twin royals who looked so much like him- Aricka with her light blue eyes and pale blonde hair; Chad with his smile and curls and the similar facial structure. “Oh, wow… you really mean it- you meant it all-,”

Aricka was about to speak and assure him when the door opened-

And her dad walked in,

Then everything went chaotic once again.

10 Legendes van de Dark Knight

Ik had dit artikel ook schaamteloos en clickbait-gewijs de ‘Legends of the Dark Knight Top 10’ kunnen noemen. Maar, enkele losse nummers uit grotere crossovers als Knightquest en KnightsEnd niet meegerekend, zijn er precies 10 verhalen uit de ‘Legends of the Dark Knight’ serie in het Nederlands verschenen. Batmania

In 1989 woedde er volop Batmania in de VS en de rest van de wereld. Dat had natuurlijk veel te maken met de Batman film van Tim Burton die dat jaar stond te verschijnen. Om volop in te spelen op de hype besloot de Amerikaanse uitgever DC naast de gewone ‘Batman’ serie en ‘Detective Comics’ een nieuwe, derde maandelijkse Batman serie te lanceren: ‘Legends of the Dark knight’.

Het opzet van de reeks was best uniek. De verhalen zouden telkens 5 nummers duren en door wisselende creatieve teams gemaakt worden. Bovendien zouden ze zich niet in de gewone continuïteit afspelen, maar (meestal) in het verleden van Batman.

Het bleek een schot in de roos. Dankzij het hoge niveau van de eerste verhalen werd de serie een instant klassieker. Geen wonder dat enkele jaren later ook een aantal verhalen het tot een Nederlandse vertaling zouden schoppen 👇

Shaman (Legends of the Dark Knight 1-5)

De eerste verhaallijn van ‘lotdk’ kreeg een plekje in de Batman Special serie van Baldakijn Boeken. Shaman, geschreven door Dennis O'Neil met tekeningen van Ed Hannigan en John Beatty, speelt zich af tijdens de vroege dagen van Batman's carrière. Het verhaal begint met een jonge Bruce Wayne die in Alaska een legende hoort over een mystieke vleermuisgeest. Deze ervaring beïnvloedt hem diep. Na terugkeer naar Gotham City, als Batman, stuit hij op een masker dat lijkt op de geest uit de legende. Dit masker is verbonden met een reeks misdaden in de stad.

Opvallend is dat voor deze Nederlandstalige versie niet de originele covers van Legends of the Dark Knight zijn gebruikt, maar wel die van de Amerikaanse tpb ‘The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told’ en de ‘Son of the Demon’ hardcover.

2. Gothic (Legends of the Dark Knight 6-10)

Dit verhaal werd geschreven door Grant Morrison met tekenwerk van Klaus Janson. Samen zorgen ze voor een werkelijk huiveringwekkend verhaal. Ik heb niet vaak dat een comic me koude rillingen geeft, maar deze dus wel!

‘Gothic’ begint wanneer leden van de maffia in Gotham City op mysterieuze en gruwelijke wijze worden vermoord. De moorden lijken verbonden te zijn met een stedelijke legende over een bovennatuurlijke wraakzuchtige figuur genaamd ‘Mr. Whisper’. Mr. Whisper was decennia geleden een sadistische schoolhoofd die vermoedelijk omkwam nadat zijn misdaden aan het licht kwamen, maar nu lijkt hij teruggekeerd om wraak te nemen op de maffialeiders, die ooit zijn voormalige studenten waren.

Het verhaal verscheen tweemaal in het Nederlands. Een eerste keer in Batman Special 11 en 12 bij Baldakijn. Jaren later, in 2014, volgde nog een hardcover uitgave bij RW Lion.

3. Prey (Legends of the Dark Knight 11-15)

‘Prooi’, opgenomen in Batman Special 13 en 14 bij Baldakijn, zit een beetje gevangen tussen het bekendere ‘Gothic’ en het belangrijkere ‘Venom’, maar dat maakt het verhaal niet minder. Dit boeiend en psychologisch diepgaand verhaal werd geschreven door Doug Moench met prachtig tekenwerk van Paul Gulacy.

Ook dit verhaal speelt zich af tijdens de vroege jaren van Batman's carrière. Het belicht de intense strijd tussen Batman en politiepsycholoog Dr. Hugo Strange. Ik vind dit eigenlijk één van de betere Batman verhalen aller tijden. Ik zou het een semi-klassieker durven noemen.

4. Venom (Legends of the Dark Knight 16-20)

Zoals gezegd volgde daarna ‘Venom’ of ‘Gif’ zoals de vertaalde versie in Batman Special 15 en 16 heet bij Baldakijn. Het verhaal begint wanneer Batman faalt om een jong meisje te redden, wat leidt tot een diepe persoonlijke crisis. Zijn zoektocht naar meer kracht leidt hem naar een experimentele drug genaamd Venom, die zijn fysieke kracht enorm verhoogt. Echter, de bijwerkingen zijn verwoestend en Batman raakt verslaafd.

Later zou dit verhaal natuurlijk de prelude voor de hele Knightfall saga blijken te zijn.

5. Faces (Legends of the Dark Knight 28-30)

Intussen werd in de Amerikaanse lotdk reeks het vaste format van 5 nummers per verhaal opgegeven. Zo kregen ook kortere verhalen een plaats in de serie. Ook in de Nederlandse versie veranderde er wat. Legends of the Dark Knight werd na ‘Venom’ niet meer vast opgenomen in Batman Special bij Baldakijn. Het zou nog tot 1996 duren, na de hele Knightfall saga, dat er weer ‘legends’ een plekje kregen. Nu wel in de reguliere Batman reeks.

In Batman 73 was dat het geval voor ‘Faces’, geschreven én getekend door Matt Wagner. Het verhaal duikt diep in de getormenteerde geest van Harvey Dent en zijn obsessie met dualiteit. Two-Face's plan in dit verhaal is dan ook bijzonder macaber: een samenleving creëren op een afgelegen eiland, uitsluitend bevolkt door mensen met fysieke afwijkingen. Zo kan hij als leider regeren zonder oordeel of afwijzing. Een Batman verhaal zoals ik ze graag lees: donker en met veel diepgang.

6. Mask (Legends of the Dark Knight 39, 40)

In Batman 75 kregen we ‘Mask’ door Bryan Talbot. Batman wordt gewond en verward wakker in een ziekenhuis. Zijn artsen vertellen hem dat hij een alcoholistische zwerver is die zich kleedt in een batsuit gemaakt van afval. Is dit een hallucinatie, of is zijn leven als Batman de werkelijke illusie? Een zeer boeiend en volwassen Batman verhaal dat je als lezer uitdaagt. Meer dan de moeite waard!

7. Hothouse (Legends of the Dark Knight 42, 43)

Het valt je misschien op dat in de Legends of the Dark Knight verhalen weinig klassieke vijanden van Batman voorkomen. Hothouse, in Batman 74, brengt daar verandering in met een optreden van Poison Ivy. Schrijver John Francis Moore probeert hier samen met tekenaar P. Craig Russell wat diepgang te brengen in het personage van Ivy. Zeker geen slecht verhaal, maar misschien wel één van de minste vertaalde ‘legends’. Het tekenwerk van Craig Russell is wél helemaal top.

8. Criminals (Legends of the Dark Knight 69, 70)

In het laatste nummer (77) van de Batman serie van Baldakijn kregen we het verhaal ‘Criminals’ waarin Batman undercover gaat in de gevangenis van Gotham City. De maker van dit verhaal is Mike Zeck. Als je zijn naam en het plot van dit verhaal naast elkaar legt, kan je er natuurlijk niet naast kijken dat Zeck zich het er hier een beetje makkelijk vanaf heeft gemaakt. Neem de Punisher limited serie (Limited Serie nummer 6 van Juniorpress) er maar eens bij en zoek de gelijkenissen 🤫 Dat neemt niet weg dat het verhaal op zich best vermakelijk is. Bovendien is het tekenwerk ronduit geweldig. Wel komaan, het is je vergeven, Mike! 😉

9. Sleeping (Legends of the Dark Knight 76-78)

Horrorschrijver Scott Hampton neemt ons in ‘Sleeping’ of 'In Slaap' mee in de gedachten van Batman. Bruce Wayne blijkt door een ongeluk in coma te zijn geraakt. Zijn geest zit daardoor gevangen in een droomwereld. We volgen in het verhaal de tocht van Bruce’s geest doorheen die wereld. Dat zorgt voor een ongewoon Batmanverhaal, waarin we hem in een soort fantasy setting ten strijde zien trekken tegen allerlei monsters. Toch is dit geen oppervlakkig knokverhaal. De gevechten gáán ergens over en leiden tot nieuwe inzichten. Een minder bekend maar zeer sterk Batmanverhaal!

10. Vows (Legends of the Dark Knight annual 2)

Tot slot is er nog ‘Geloften’ uit Batman Special 17. Een beetje een atypisch Legends of the Dark Knight verhaal in die zin dat het zich in het heden afspeelt. Commissaris Gordon en zijn geliefde Sarah Essen (uit Batman Jaar Eén) gaan trouwen. Maar net op het moment dat ze de laatste voorbereidingen treffen, komt een oude bekende roet in het eten gooien…

Persoonlijk vond ik dit verhaal een beetje een vreemde keuze van Baldakijn om op te nemen. Ten eerste is het gewoonweg geen al te sterke comic. Maar vooral omdat de romance tussen Gordon en Essen hoofdzakelijk plaatsvond in enkele overgeslagen nummers van de reguliere Amerikaanse Batmanreeks, ten voordele van recentere Robin verhalen. (Jammer trouwens, want daar zitten zeer fijne Norm Breyfogle verhalen bij die we dus niet in vertaling hebben gekregen)

[all grunting] Everybody suck in. - Hmm, let’s use the shell hogs. all: Yes! What’s a shell hog? - [sighs] Did none of you read the tank’s instruction manual I gave you? both: Shred, shred, shred! - How does it handle so much paper? - It’s on my to-do list. - Just push that button on the side. [melodic beeping] all: Awesome! - Why are there only two? - I’m afraid I’ve not gotten around to making the rest. Maybe they’ll come out during the holiday season, so you know they’re special. - Donnie, these are amazing, and I know everything I say sounds sarcastic, but I’m being completely genuine–this time. - Let’s ride. [engine revving] [tires squealing] - If we can make this work and stop these art thieves, we’ll be the perfect team. [explosion] Everyone keep your eyes open. Let me know if you see anything suspicious. - [babbling] - [babbling] both: I saw something move. - Over on the left. - Over on the right. both: No, this way. - Great plan, Raph. Now instead of being able to investigate two leads, we are stuck together. - Shh, no, this is what teamwork is. They’re into art? - This should be easy. Turtle FAB, attack! [explosion] - Flawless entry. Now to–oh, what happened to you lot? Did some creepy doctor man chop you into tiny bits and then sew you back together? - What? No. It’s team-building. - Oh, yes, team-building. My former hippo assistant Doug and I used to love to team-build. - I’m giving you one chance to get out of here before we– - Foot face guys? - It’s those flame face foot foes, fellas. - What happened to you guys? Did a doctor cut you up and then– - Is there a creepy doctor running around that we don’t know about? - [laughs] Looks like you’ve got to choose between me or them, a classic wellington’s choice. - He’s getting away into that exhibit on the occult. Quick, follow him. - Hurry! Let’s get the device while these idiots are stuck together. - It’s team-building! - Why are we stuck together when there are literally three villains? - Make that four! Warren Stone, the biggest, baddest of them all is here to get in on the– - Hey, guy? Can you give us a minute? We’ve got a lot on our plate here. - We need to go after the flame heads. - No, Hypno. - No, stop me! - Flame heads. - Hypno. - Flame heads. - Hypno. - Flame heads. - Hypno. - Flame heads. - Hypno. - Flame heads. - Hypno. - Enough! We deal with the problem that’s in front of us, like the perfect theme. Theam? - Well, that makes perfect sense. Okay, theam, what are we gonna do? - We roll! - Roll what? - Us. Get on our side. Turn! - Ah, turn! - Turn. - Turn me. - Now that you’re under my control, how about you leave this place and– - We’re not under your control. - Yes, master. - Oh, brother. - Donnie and Mikey, he can’t hypnotize us. Let’s get him. [grunts] - Huh, that’s a little too close. Stop right there! - I’m sorry, what? I can’t hear you. - [yells] - Oh, no, not again. [groans] [groaning] [coughs] - Ugh, what happened? - We stopped him. - Ah, like the perfect team. - No! No more terrible team-building ideas. both: Whoa. - [groans] - One set of bad guys left. - Will this nightmare never end? - This is really gonna hurt ya. - That’s not good. [electric zapping] - Ugh, oh. - Yes, we’re free! - That’s not good. - I missed you guys. - Oh, no one needs to be that close to their family. No offense. - You moron, blast them again. [electric zapping] - [gasps] - Oh, no. - Raph, what are you doing? - Ah! Ugh. [whimpers] - Oh, no. - Raph, Raph, you okay, buddy? - Yeah, man, I ju– I just really thought this would bring us together. The FAB was a stupid idea. Let’s do your guy’s thing and split up. - No, your plan worked. We’re a better team now. - Yeah, what if we didn’t split up? What if we got the FAB four back together? - Sure, but how? - Finally, I’m free! - Let’s use this rope. - [groans] I am not a belt. - Let’s do this. - I’m greatest foe you’ve ever faced! - Ugh. Ah! [loud thud] - Cowabunga! Ahh! - [growls] - Let’s shred, boys. - This is my nightmare! - [gasps] [screams] Stop that! Move out of the way! - FAB mode is awesome. - Now we are the perfect team. [all cheer] - Go, team theam. - Finally, I’m free. Ooh. This will work nicely. Ah! [chuckles] - Ow! Get–get away, bird! - [squawks] - [laughs] Ugh!

Mi búsqueda delTop Dog Blogcomenzó hace un par de meses cuando decidí limpiar mis suscripciones a RSS feeds y correos electrónicos y buscar nuevos contenidos de entrenamiento canino en la web. Mi objetivo era simple: Encontrar “MY” top 50 blogs de perros y añadirlos a mi feed de noticias RSS para que pudiera ver los últimos y más grandes artículos de perros y cachorros a través de la red.

Busqué en los principales motores de búsqueda, directorios y otras listas de los mejores xx de blogs de perros y se me ocurrieron más de 500 blogs y sitios web de perros.

Después de filtrar la lista de duplicados, raspadores y otros sitios indignos, llegué a mi lista final de 486 blogs de perros. Dejé a un lado los blogs puramente personales e incluí principalmente sitios sobre adiestramiento de perros y cachorros, productos, eventos, rescates, adopciones y fotos.

Circles, chapter 2

fandom: Time Tunnel

Synopsis: Tony arrives back at Project Tic-Toc 10 years too soon, emotions ensue.

I’m tagging @effulgentpoet because she was kind enough to read the first part and just in case she wants to read the next bit; no pressure tho darling

Tony was bundled into the jeep by a still-wary Jiggs, and deposited in Medical, where he found himself unceremoniously stripped of every last stitch of clothing and sat in a gown on a paper sheet while a parade of personnel took readings of everything from the amount of potassium in his blood to how many fillings he had in his mouth. They all wore face masks and gloves. Tony recognized a few of them, but none of them recognized him.

“Where’s Doug?” he demanded, of every single nurse and doctor who took their particular toll. He got a few looks of sympathy, but one of Jiggs’s men, hand-picked to guard Tony while he was poked and prodded, warned them off of talking with a very pointed shake of his head.

“Containment protocol,” Jiggs reminded Doug, who was waiting with ever-thinning patience to speak with their guest. “You wrote half of these measures yourself. No contamination or cross-pollination of the Project. Tic-Toc Base is hallowed ground.”

“Sacrosanct, I think I said,” Doug replied. He looked up at the monitor showing the security feed of the Medical area. “It made sense at the time.”

“It makes sense now,” Jiggs said. “Anyway, I still think it’s a fairy story. Even if there is a Newman at MIT, he’s probably a shell. They would have done their homework.”

Doug grunted in reply. Maybe so, but the only way to uncover the truth would be by talking to this man. He paced a few steps, drifting along the corridor wall without really seeing it.

“Security should handle the interview,” Jiggs said.

Doug turned on his heel. “I’ll handle the interview.”

“Dr. Phillips, you’re too important to this project to put you in a room with an unverified, uncleared unknown.”

Doug pulled one hand from his pocket, held his palm to Jiggs. “He’s not going to convince any of you. I’m going to let him try to convince me. If he is who he says he is, don’t we owe him that?”

Jiggs was fingering the gun on his belt. “You numbers types are going to be the death of me.”

“We’ll try not to be.” Doug resumed his pacing.

Two hours later, the protocol shifted from discovery to maintenance. The head physician on duty called the canteen for a meal to be delivered to Medical, and Doug, who apparently ranked lower than a plate of chicken and rice, was admitted soon after.

They had put Tony in the suite for containing troublesome patients, with the minimum security of locks, not the plastic-draped and hermetically sealed suite for containing rampaging pathogens. It was a small, minimally furnished room, white tile floor and walls, bright lights, with a cot, chair, and table, where the aforementioned meal had been deposited and ignored.

Tony, wearing a pair of white scrubs, was seated at the table, head in his hands.

Security unlocked the door and held it open. Doug stepped through and it swung closed behind him, with more of a medical swoosh than a jailhouse clang. The lock turned heavily.

“I’m not your guinea pig,” Tony snapped, as soon as Doug came into the room. He picked up his head and glared. The prisoner treatment had keyed him up again. At least, after the decon shower they had forced on him, he felt cleaner than he had in weeks.

“Medical needed to check you’re not a threat to anyone on base.”

“They took a whole unit of blood. What are they checking for, vampirism?” It had made him a little light-headed, so he was perched at the table, rigidly aware of how alone he was. He wasn’t sure he could stand up to go toe to toe with Doug.

“I’m sorry. Why don’t you finish your food?”

Tony shoved the plate away from him. “I’m not hungry.”

“Come on. You’ve gotta be.”

Tony knew that tone. That sensible, friendly, I’m-just-looking-out-for-you reasonableness that Doug could suffocate you with. Tony looked down at his plate of dry chicken, salad, and rice and made a face.

Doug followed his look. “The canteen aren’t miracle workers, but it’s not that bad.”

“Then you eat it,” Tony said.

Doug set a blue folder on the table, then swung into the chair across from him and swiped a cherry tomato off Tony’s plate. “I’m hungry, too. You know I was just heading to dinner when you showed up?”

“Sorry to spoil you plans.”

“This is a lot more interesting.” Doug bit into the tomato. It was mushy. He tried to hide the grimace. He removed a notebook and pencil from his breast pocket, flipped to a new page, and set it in front of him. “Take me through it again. Name, rank, serial number. Anything, everything we can use to corroborate this story.”

Tony did. Haltingly at first, then picking up speed. It had happened fast for him. The chair of the department calling him into his office, the interviews with bland polite men in suits. Becky had fallen away during the next few months of intense work on that fateful paper and then, out of nowhere, an invitation to defend it as his dissertation.

Doug had been there. A “special invite” to sit on the dissertation board. Tony hadn’t known who he was. He kept that to himself.

It was a rainy day in early April. They started at eight a.m. Tony drew figures and charts and chains of equations until an entire pack of chalk had turned to dust in his fingertips. The questions kept coming. By the end of the gauntlet the street lights had come on outside and he barely knew his own name, until his adviser shook his hand and said “Congratulations, Doctor Newman.”

Doug sent him home to pack. The next day they touched down in the middle of Nowhere, Arizona, under a blue sky full of brilliant sun. Tony hadn’t thought or breathed anything else since.

He knew staffing levels, layouts, equipment, even the make and model of the coffee machines in the control center. Some of the things he described were still on Doug’s wish list, to be wrangled over in endless committee meetings in DC. Some were already in play. Tony answered every question Doug lobbed at him for an hour and a half, trying to place him both in the present and the future, and at the end of it, Doug had heard enough. He was a believer.

Then it was Doug’s turn for show and tell. The test results had all come back; Doug opened the blue folder. The subject was in overall good health, with nutritional deficiencies consistent with some months of deprivation. Slight dehydration, several superficial injuries, and no marks of biological contamination.

“Do you know where the radiological contamination came from?” Doug asked, leafing through the reports. That was the only caveat on Tony’s charts, with a low impact rating.

Tony looked up at him and calculated. The radiation bath hadn’t been conceived yet.

“No,” Tony said. “Must be a by-product.”

Doug caught his hesitation. He held Tony’s eyes for a half-second too long before he finally smiled. “Well, it’s not a threat to you or anyone on station. Good news, Medical can’t see any reason to confine you here.”

Tony was regretting not eating when he had the chance. He was light-headed again. “So now what? You’ll turn me over to Security for their go?”

“No. Come with me.”

Security stood aside as Dr. Phillips escorted his guest out. Tony took the lead, subtly, guiding them out of Medical and toward the central tower space, the Atrium. He knew these corridors like the back of his hand. He sensed Doug watching his every step, and he saw the guards raise their hand to their ear pieces as he entered their range. He kept his chin held high.

Tony had no codes, no access badges, no biometrics on file, so Doug stepped up to the armored door to the Atrium. He swiped his badge, then turned his eyes to the iris scanner mounted unobtrusively in the terminal.

The doors slid open. Tony stepped out onto the footbridge, veered to the rail, and stopped dead.

The Atrium smelled of fresh paint and hot metal, sawn-off lumber and floor wax. Half of it was still under construction, hung with plastic and scaffolding.

Impossible to ignore, the pulsing, breathing power core was alive with electricity, writhing with nuclear reaction and shunted neutrons. It drew Tony’s whole attention, it drew him to lean over the railing and bathe in its mad refracting light.

Seven years ago, first laying eyes on it, it was the most beautiful thing Tony had ever seen. And in that moment, suspended above its unimaginable power, all the doubts Tony had ever had about his own sanity, his abilities, humankind’s striving against the seemingly unassailable wall of the universe and its laws, had vanished. He knew they could do anything. It was the engine of all their dreams.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Doug asked.

Tony could only nod.

The staffing complexes were still under construction, falling down into the gloom below. Tiny lights, like illuminated ants, were busy some five hundred floors below them, as construction crews dug deeper into the Arizona plate and carved out space for more offices, more laboratories, more libraries, more minds to strive toward this one inconceivable goal.

Tony finally pried himself away. A wave of dizziness crested, then subsided, as he pushed off the railing. “Where are we going?”

“My office.”

Doug’s office was a suite just above the control room. Doug waved him in and followed.

Tony took a breath. The paint smelled sharp and fresh here, too.

The outer room, where Doug had his desk, bookshelves, and seating area, also had a bank of windows overlooking the control floor. His desk was arranged to face them, and the Tunnel was dead center.

Eyes on the prize, Doug used to say.

Goodbye, work-life balance, Tony had thought then.

He thought it now, too. Doug’s office was functional. It was efficient. The furniture was new, with clean lines. Bleeding-edge design in bright woods and angles. Doug’s desk was a nod to his position; lots of drawers, and a desk top with a larger square footage than Tony’s dorm room. Files, always neatly stacked and sorted when Doug could help it . Cabinets full of identical manila folders.

Then as now, Tony was struck by how spartan it was. No pictures, no photographs, no cool rocks Doug had picked up on a whim while out hiking. A rack of plants were oxygenating the room from under a grow light, but they had no personality; Doug had let one of his assistants choose them.

Several diplomas in identical frames were hung behind his desk, but they only gave the who, what, where, when of Doug’s education. No context.

The bookshelves held a hint of life; Don Quixote in several editions, HG Wells, and Conan Doyle, plus a fair spread of the Western canon. Theory featured heavily, and Tony, who had never been much for reading when he could be doing, had once gotten the grand tour. Mathematicians, of course, and philosophers, and historians. And mathematicians playing philosopher, and philosophers playing historian. A busy little section on astronomy that served as a lending library of sorts; Tic Toc Base was situated under some of the darkest skies left in North America, and there were plenty of amateur and professional astronomers in their ranks. Doug had an antique telescope in a leather case propped in the corner. His father’s name was embossed on the strap.

Apart from the bookshelves, the only truly personal touch was the ring on Doug’s small finger, a souvenir from his very brief stint in the Army. He said the brass in Washington liked to see it; but he wore it all the time, so Tony figured that time in the forces was still important to Doug, even when he went back to civilian life.

Tony was familiar with all this. He had stood in this office - and sat, and eaten, and slept - a hundred times. But today he looked around with fresh eyes. Doug had been this obsessed, this driven, this… singular… from the very first days.

Tony looked at the Doug standing beside him. Doug was about his age, Tony realized with a burst of shock. No lines, no gray in his hair, a touch more trim, with basic training not so many years behind. More youthful, physically, but the same eternal, slightly estranged soul.

Tony tilted his head when he realized Doug was staring back at him. “What?”

“I keep thinking I might recognize you,” Doug admitted. “If I just look hard enough.”

“You won’t. We haven’t met yet.” Tony’s brain had finally absorbed that. It had a rather chilling effect: for all he thought knew about this place and these people, they were strangers. He was in a strange land.

And if he wasn’t careful, the Doug Phillips he would come to know, the project he had given his life to see complete, might become something else. The complexity of his situation, and the care he needed to take here, were beginning to sink in.

Tony knew he had gone unfriendly and cold. But perhaps that was for the best. He needed the space in his own head to think things through.

Doug, if he noticed the shift in tone, decided not to comment on it. He directed Tony’s attention to the windows.

“How long until we complete it?” Doug asked.

Tony followed his gaze. The mouth of the Tunnel was still rough, natural rock, shrouded in ghostly plastic sheeting and thick, snaking bundles of cords criss-crossed the control floor. They hadn’t gotten the final design and circuitry completed until 1964. That was six years from now.

“Soon,” Tony said.

Doug looked sidelong. “Soon?”

“That’s all I can say.”

Doug gazed out across the control room. “These last few months... we’ve hit a wall.”

Tony crossed his arms and remained silent.

“Newman,” Doug said, and Tony barely recognized it as his own name, coming from Doug’s lips like that, “Will you help us?”
