I wrote a post recently about my history (normally I'd link it but I don't want to be narcissistic), and realized that I've read a fair few occult books over the years. So here's the list; I'll keep updating it as I find more books in my various libraries and book stashes.

Quick note before getting into this list--not everything I've read will make it. Just the stuff I read and recommend others parse through. For example, I have intentionally omitted my studies in Kabbalah to discourage others from unintentionally appropriating.

But by "parse through", I truly mean that. My path has meandered through several schools of thought and wandered into appropriative territory at times (I constantly strive to correct any appropriation in my practice that gets brought to my attention). Maybe about 20% of each book makes it into my current path.

Well Juh-nelle, we see ya sister talkin’ about ya on TikTok!

Ashleigh Wilson, the sister of fired Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans (and daughter of Barbara Evans) is speaking out about the recent controversies surrounding her family and calling out Jenelle for bashing her and her mother.

In a series of TikTok videos posted on Tuesday and Wednesday, Ashleigh (who has been estranged from Jenelle for more than eight years) addressed Jenelle frequently attacking their mom Barbara online. Ashleigh also talked about the situation with Jenelle’s son Jace, as well as the child abuse/assault allegations against Jenelle’s husband David Eason for his alleged assault on Jace.

“I’m making this video to tell everyone that my sister is nothing but a liar. She has not only lied and destroyed my mother’s reputation, but she’s destroyed my reputation, and said horrible things about our family over the past 15 years. 

Here’s The Ashley breaks down some of the most-interesting topics revealed in Ashleigh’s videos. 

On how Barbara feels about Jenelle currently:

According to Ashleigh, Barbara has had enough of Jenelle’s antics.

“My mother is very upset. She’s done with my sister,” she said. “I have not spoken to my sister in eight years, and if she wants to retaliate that’s absolutely fine because I have a lot of things against her that I have kept secret for a very long time.”

In her video from Wednesday, Ashleigh called Jenelle a bully.

“I’m also tired of my mother calling me upset, telling me about the horrible things that my sister has been doing….this is not OK, that she’s allowed to keep bullying my mother and I for years and years. 

On the situation with Jace:

As The Ashley previously told you, Jenelle was awarded custody of Jace last week, after the 14-year-old had been in CPS custody since October. Jace was removed from Jenelle’s care (and home) after Jenelle’s husband David Eason allegedly assaulted the boy. David currently has active assault by strangulation and child abuse charges pending against him.

In her videos, Ashleigh talked about what’s happening with Jace.

“What’s going on with my nephew Jace is very sad,” Ashleigh said. “My sister is not going to get him help. She doesn’t care about anybody but herself. She will try to destroy anybody in the process because she operates on toxicity and negative things.”

Ashleigh then revealed that Jenelle is in contempt of the custody order in effect for two of her kids, Kaiser (whom Jenelle shares with Nathan Griffith) and Jace. (Currently, the custody order from March 2023— which gives Barbara visitation with Jace— is in effect.) Jenelle is required by the custody orders to allow visitation time for both grandmothers. 

“She is also in contempt of court by both grandmothers, Grandma Doris [Davidson, Nathan’s mom] and my own mother, Barbara,” Ashleigh said. 

On the consequences Ashleigh says she’s suffered for having Jenelle as a sister:

It ain’t easy being Jenelle Evans’ sister, according to Ashleigh.

Ashleigh revealed in her videos that being related to Jenelle has caused her a lot of grief, particularly when it comes to employment.

“Every job interview that I’ve had, they find out that I’m related to you, Jenelle. They look me up on the Internet…Now, I have a wonderful career in the healthcare industry,” she said. “Yet, you do nothing but sit on the Internet and talking horrible stuff about people, and the rest of the family, and start drama with everybody. 

“…you’re almost 33 and you act like a 16-year-old,” Ashleigh continued. 

In the video posted Wednesday, Ashleigh again spoke about what it’s like to be Jenelle’s sister.

“I’m related to her. It’s really embarrassing that I’m related to her,” she said. “When I go out in public, people know that I’m related to her…as soon as people find out [who my sister is], they Google my name and my reputation is destroyed. It’s really embarrassing and I’m just tired of it.”

On Jenelle’s frequent social media posts that bash Barbara:

Ashleigh next moved on to the barrage of negative social media statements Jenelle has recently made regarding their mother, Barbara. 

“There is no reason to talk such horrible things about my mother, after she raised my nephew [Jace] for 14 years of his life,” she said, before speaking directly to Jenelle. “You really need to get some mental help. You have had substance abuse issues since you were about 13. You have serious mental health issues. You have been like this since you were a kid. 

“…behind the camera, you’re a very sad person and I feel very sorry for you,” Ashleigh said, adding, “You’re damaging everybody in our family for your poor actions, and you don’t care at all. You have no empathy or compassion.”

On the child abuse/assault charges against David:

“The whole CPS thing, you’re lying about that,” Ashleigh said. “You’re lying about the whole CPS thing, and the whole charges with David. David did assault Jace, and I know this because I have the sources that have said so. 

Surprisingly, the usually outspoken Jenelle has not yet responded to Ashleigh’s comments.

Back in September, Ashleigh left a few comments on YouTube @ElleBee‘s video about Jenelle, writing that, in her opinion, Jenelle neglects her kids, uses drugs and can’t handle it when the “truth” about her life is revealed.

When those comments went public, Jenelle did respond.

“Here we go again…I do not associate with my sister or brother [Colin] for years now,” Jenelle wrote on Instagram Stories at the time. “My sister has no idea about my family or personal life. She doesn’t associate with my children either.”

Jenelle and Ashleigh have been at odds for years. Back in 2021, Jenelle discussed her poor relationship with Ashleigh in a TikTok Q&A session, stating that she believes Ashleigh is envious of her.

“Me and her didn’t have the best relationship growing up…We definitely didn’t get along then because it seemed like she was jealous over me,” Jenelle stated in her signature “Jenelle Speak” way.

“Later on in life I ended up on this show, and then things only got worse from there. She has mental health issues. She sold me out to the tabloids, making up stories that aren’t even true,” Jenelle stated, referencing a 2012 interview Ashleigh did with Star magazine in which Ashleigh called Jenelle “evil,” among other things.

In the aftermath of tragedy, it's strange the things you remember.

The defeaning boom as the house exploded.

The paralyzing fear as I searched for my wife.

The blinding smoke burning my eyes as I carried her out.

But carved into my soul for the rest of my days would be the earth-shattering realization that the woman in my arms wasn't my wife.

Bree and I were the only survivors - not that either of us were truly living after the night. As a single dad with nowhere else to go, I moved into her guest house. And somehow, through the guilt and grief, we forged an unlikely team.

It took years, but I watched the gradual return of her smile - slow and life-altering. The two of us could sit outside for hours, talking about nothing, and it filled the massive hole in my chest with new life.

I may have carried her out of that fire, but the truth was, Bree saved me.

As we healed, the secrets and lies of the past smoldered in the ashes, threatening to ignite again.

Our love was born from the embers, and together we would go up in flames.

On what was supposed to be a fun double-date night betweens best friends Rob and Eason, with their wives Bree and Jessica, also best friends, quickly turned to tragedy. During a game of Pictionary, Eason and Jessica's house blew up in an explosion caused by a fauly gas line in the basement. Eason, though terrified and confused, attempts to locate Jessica, and in doing so, ends up finding and rescuing Bree, carrying her from the flames.

Bree, in her confusion, is upset with Eason, who is unable to return into his burning home to attempt to locate her husband best friends, and the result ends with both of their lives ending abruptly. Bree is devastated, the love of her life having been ripped from her so greatly.

But despite her hatred for Eason, who she wasn't a fan of at all, she invites him and his daughter, Luna, to move into their pool house in the backyard while he figures out what he needs to do. Better yet, the two of them will work together to raise their children, as Bree and Rob had two children, Asher and Madison. While Bree goes back to work during the day, Eason will remain with the kids and at night, Bree will watch them so Eason can work on his musical career and getting his name back out there.

Over the next year, they are able to overcome anything that is thrown their way, and over that time, come to truly love and care for each other as friends. When Bree finally gathers the courage to begin packing up Rob's things, Eason agrees to clean out Rob's beloved Porsche, and in doing so, finds a hidden cell phone in the glove compartment. And what he finds instead is a shocking array of messages between Rob and an unnamed person, who doesn't remain unnamed for long. Rob had been having an affair with Jessica.

Eason, in his anger, confronts Bree, somehow believing she was aware of it the entire time, but just like Eason, Bree is taken aback by this news. Eason leaves with Luna, stating he just needed a break and to get away for a while. He lets Bree know that they made it to a cabin in Tennessee safely, and Bree begins working out the timeline of Rob and Jessica's relationship.

What she discovers is going to rattle Eason's life even further. Luna, the only thing left in his life worth living for, may not be his biological daughter. Bree assures him that if this is the case, regardless of her DNA, Luna will always be his and he will always be her father in all the ways that matter.

In the end, he cannot go on not knowing the truth, if only to inform Madison and Asher that Luna is their biological sister after all, after the three of them have grown up knowing nothing other than each other for quite some time now. Eason agrees to do a DNA test, and on the day they get the results back, Eason gets a tattoo in honor of Luna across her chest, right over his heart, because he knows that no matter the results, she loves her more than life itself. In the end, Bree also gets a tattoo with all three kids' initials, because no matter what, all three of them belonged to her in the only way that matters.

Bree reads the email for Eason, and shares with him the news: that Luna IS his biological daughter. With that knowledge, they can move on with their lives. When Eason is given the opportunity to perform at the Grammy's with a popular pop singer after her duet partner was sick, opportunities begin to open for Eason who has spent his entire life trying to be discovered.

Levee, the pop singer, gives Eason the opportunity to sign with her label, and with Bree's support, who is able to take off work immediately for the time being, Eason begins his work with songwriting and everything he can think of in LA while Bree returns home to Georgia to be with their family. For two weeks, they're apart, but Eason is able to surprise the kids by returning home before he must return the following week.

With plans to exhaust the kids so the two of them could be together, it backfires on them when they're both so exhausted that they end up falling asleep. But Asher comes into their home panicking, informing them that Rob, his deceased father, entered Luna's room and kidnapped her. Frantic, Eason goes searching for his daughter, while Bree tries to calm down her son.

As the hours pass by with no sign or word of Luna's whereabouts, Eason continues to be frantic. But, the detectives working on their case give him a lead, and Bree and Eason go in search. What they find is truly shocking: Rob. Asher had been right; he really had seen his father kidnap his little sister, and take her from their home.

Rob tells them of his scheme: he had conned a man named Steven Barton into starting the fire that killed Jessica. While Bree was the only one meant to die in the fire, Jessica talked Rob into adding Eason into the mix as well, as she had truly hated him, and Rob had hated Bree. But, when that backfired, and Rob's life unofficially ended, he watched as Bree and Eason began the life that he had always been after. He even goes as far as to taunt Eason with the knowledge that Luna wasn't his, as Jessica led him to believe that he was her biological father. But, Eason taunts him right back, informing him that Jessica was nothing more than manipulative liar to everyone, including Rob, and that Luna is his biological daughter.

Rob is arrested, and Bree does what she has to do in order to have her marriage dissolved officially. When he takes a plea deal, earning himself a prison sentence of life with no possibility of parole, and effectively ending his parental rights, Eason and Bree get married and he officially adopts Asher and Madison, making them Maxwell's as well.

At the end of this story, Eason and Bree, who is pregnant with their fourth child, Eason is at the Grammy's, preparing to win for his song called From the Embers, for which he does win. The two of them are now living in California, living the best life. Bree was able to get rid of the company she had worked so hard for, tainted by what Rob had done, is now the stay-at-home mom that she has always wanted to be, and Eason continues to rise up in the music industry, selling out headlining tours and winning Grammy's along the way.

This story was HEARTWRENCHING. By far one of my favorite books of the year - Eason Maxwell has my heart wholeheartedly, and in the book universe, I truly hope that the life he and Bree have created together through such a horrific tragedy is everything they hoped that it would be!

Physical Appearance

Mary Anne is an average Caucasian eight-year-old, 4’4” tall and weighing 58 pounds. She has fair, slightly tanned skin, brown eyes, and dark brown hair that goes down to her shoulders. Due to lots of athletic activity, she has a somewhat athletic build.

You can easily pick her out of a crowd (despite her height) due to her signature red scarf and the giant blue backpack she always carries.

She prefers practical clothes that allow her ample freedom of movement.

Personality

One can best describe Mary Anne as a sassy Dora the Explorer. She is kind and always willing to help people, but with a healthy dose of sarcasm and wit.

Mary Anne loves adventure and excitement. To her, the world is full of things to do and people to meet. She always carries a massive backpack full of “adventuring gear” to ensure she’s always ready for the next adventure.

Her best character trait is her immense kindness and charity. She loves helping those in need, be they human or magical creatures, and always treats them with respect. It often works out for her, as she builds strong bonds with many people who are willing to pay her back in kind.

However, Mary Anne also struggles with selfishness. She can be a bit of a glory hound and an attention-seeker, as she doesn’t get much attention from her parents. Mary Anne is aware of this flaw and hates it about herself. However, she eventually comes to accept this part of herself.

She can also be a bit reckless. Her love of adventure and desire for excitement has gotten her into trouble more than once. Thankfully for her, she learns from these experiences and becomes more willing to think before she acts.

She has somewhat bitter feelings toward her parents, James and Evelyn Eason, as they are apathetic about Mary Anne and don’t care what she does as long as she’s home in time for bed. Over time, she starts seeing the Garrands as her true parents.

Abilities

Mary Anne possesses a unique magical gift called the Blessing of Veritas that grants her complete immunity to all forms of magical mind manipulation– including the enchantments surrounding the Chateau, which is how she discovered it in the first place.

Being a child, Mary Anne doesn’t have strong magic. However, she uses what she does have effectively. Her favorite spell is basic telekinesis due to its versatility, but Mary Anne also knows minor spells that can do things like create soapy water or locate small objects.

However, Mary Anne’s true magical talent lies in runes. She has an eye for the patterns within runes that not even incredibly studious families like the Terwilligers pick up on. With enough study, she eventually uncovers a “runic language” of basic patterns that make up bigger runes, giving the Society of the Supernatural access to countless runes as long as they put the pieces together correctly.

As for non-magical skills, she is extremely good at packing things. After all, how else would she fit all of that adventuring gear into her backpack?

Due to carrying around that massive heavy backpack all the time, she is much stronger than you would expect her to be.

Speaking of her handy-dandy backpack, this technically doesn’t count as one of Mary Anne’s abilities, but since she always has it with her, it qualifies: the group eventually figures out how to enchant bags to give them more space, and Mary Anne’s backpack quickly is given this treatment, allowing her to carry much more stuff than she would normally.

Chinese Music Recs: 2021 Update

I looked back at my blog archive and was surprised to see that my last music recommendations post was in November 2020—almost a year ago! Well I did have my Mandarin Music March challenge, but I’m not counting that. Here’s an update on what I’ve been listening to the last 6 months or so.

蔡健雅 / Tanya Chua I have included Tanya Chua in past recommendation posts and featured a few of her songs on my blog, but I've been listening to her constantly this year, so I wanted to highlight her amazing music again. I am not a huge ballad/slow song fan, but I love hers. And she does great upbeat pop songs too. Favorite album: 双栖动物（2005） Favorite songs: 原谅、达尔文、坐立不安、无底洞、生锈游乐场

沈以诚 / Eason Shen Have you ever wondered what country-inspired Mandopop would sound like? Well you can find out right now. I discovered Eason Shen during my August challenge. He also has more typical pop songs, from slow and calm to uptempo to soulful. Favorite album: 玩家（2020） Favorite songs: 牛仔、寻宝、巴赫旧约（翻唱）、15楼窗外、形容 *First two songs are the ones with country influence.

林宥嘉 / Yoga Lin Yoga Lin is another artist I’d heard of but overlooked for whatever reason. I checked out one of his albums during my August music challenge and instantly fell in love. He’s already become one of my top 10 most played artists of 2021. I would describe a lot of his music as pop rock. Favorite album: 大小说家（2012） Favorite songs: 白昼之月、唐人街、感同身受、慢一点、4号病房

莫文蔚 / Karen Mok I made the mistake of not checking out Karen Mok earlier because I assumed most of her music was in Cantonese—she has actually released more Mandarin albums than Cantonese! Her older albums have some great rock-leaning and almost grungy tracks, and I love some of her more recent slow songs. Favorite album: 如果没有你（2006） Favorite songs: 境外、溜溜的情歌、懒得管、薄荷、女朋友的男朋友

张惠妹 / A-Mei A-Mei is a Mandopop legend. She has a very powerful voice that works well for slow, emotional ballads and face-paced rock songs alike. I see her songs covered on various singing shows often as well. I particularly enjoy her more bombastic ballads and the rock tracks from her AMIT albums. Favorite album: 阿米特（2009） Favorite songs: 也许明天、装醉、开门见山、血腥爱情故事、我最亲爱的

徐佳莹 / LaLa Hsu I’ve known about LaLa Hsu for years, but I never explored her music much until more recently. I was pleasantly surprised by the versatility of her voice and the diversity of her discography! It’s been about 4 years since her last album, so I’m hoping she has something in the works. Favorite album: 心里学（2017） Favorite songs: 你敢不敢、到此为止、理想人生、现在不跳舞要干嘛、灰色

陈势安 / Andrew Tan I first heard of Andrew Tan through a cover of his song 天后 by Jeno Liu 刘力扬. Both versions are great, and I recommend you give both a listen. Anyway, Andrew Tan has a very deep, rich voice with a lot of soul. His newest album has some great pop hits that I can’t get out of my head. Favorite album: 唯一想了解的人（2021） Favorite songs: 唯一想了解的人、兜圈、天后、我们都伤、势在必行

田馥甄 / Hebe Tien Hebe is another artist I neglected to check out sooner because I had heard her song 《不醉不会》 years ago and didn’t care for it. However, her latest album really struck a chord with me, so I’ve been going through her discography. She has some fantastic slow, emotional songs and some stuff with more edge too. Favorite album: 无人知晓（2020） Favorite songs: 讽刺的情书、底里歇斯、终身大事、人间烟火、小幸运

李荣浩 / Li Ronghao Watching Li Ronghao on 青春有你3 inspired me to finally check out his music. I definitely get the hype. His style is pretty distinctive (but I honestly don’t think I can describe it well) and he releases a lot of long 4:30-5:00+ minute songs, so he’s not for everyone, but I saved at least a couple songs from all of his albums. Favorite album: 嗯（2017） Favorite songs: 戒烟、不将就、李白、满座、老友谊

陈奕迅 / Eason Chan I’ve just started exploring Eason Chan’s discography, but so far there’s a lot to like. As a Hong Kong singer, he has Cantonese and Mandarin albums (and some albums with both languages), but I’m just sticking to Mandarin for now. I can’t wait to hear more soon! Favorite album (so far): 认了吧（2007） Favorite songs (so far): 烟味、让我留在你身边、快乐男生、放弃治疗、陪你度过漫长岁月

Jenelle Evans was seen walking into the Columbus County, North Carolina, courthouse on Wednesday afternoon— and the ex Teen Mom 2 star was not happy about it!

In photos exclusively obtained by The Ashley, Jenelle can be seen rolling up to the courthouse solo. As The Ashley previously told you, Jenelle was required to attend court on Wednesday for her ongoing custody battle with her mom, Barbara for Jenelle’s son Jace. (The main purpose of the hearing will be to do a check-in on Jace, who has been living with Barbara for the last week or so.) 

Jenelle— who asked for “privacy” in a recent interview with DailyMail— was “very angry” when she saw paparazzi photographers and news cameras set up in front of the courthouse.

“She used a side entrance and screamed, ‘Thanks for respecting my privacy!’ as she was walking up to the courthouse,” the source said. “She was flipping off everyone outside.” 

The source stated that Jenelle was about 10 minutes late for court. 

“Jace and Barbara were there but were not anywhere near Jenelle,” the source added.

The Ashley is told that, although Jenelle’s ever-present husband David Eason wasn’t allowed to attend the court hearing (and was removed from the custody court hearing on October 12), he was present outside the courthouse after Jenelle went in.

David— who was charged on Tuesday with child abuse— has not been arrested and has not turned himself in as of press time, according to a Columbus County court clerk on Wednesday. 

On Tuesday, Jenelle stated on Instagram that she was ready for court.

“Let’s go to court. I’ve been waiting on our day. I feel so violated by the system. Wait until the day you hear the truth…” she wrote. 

She then told DailyMail that the cops should be investigating someone else and not David. (She insinuated in further comments that the person who should be investigated is actually her son Jace. In the past, she has stated on social media that Barbara should also be investigated.) 

"The police are looking into the wrong person right now,” Jenelle told the site. “There is a vile situation going on and it’s not pertaining my husband. This story is one-sided and no interviews were conducted asking what happened when the ‘incident’ occurred.

“I cannot say any details at this time because this is about my son’s mental health, not about my husband and I cannot stress that enough,” she continued. “Our time will come in court and we will have our day to present the evidence that has been adding up since 2017, and again it doesn’t have anything to do with my husband.”

UPDATE! The Sun is reporting that a judge ruled that Jace would be staying in the care of Barbara for the time being. (The Ashley can confirm this.) 

The Ashley’s source tells her that the case is being continued and there will be another court date soon.

“This was a quick hearing- the judge just wanted to make sure everything was going smoothly at Barbara’s with Jace,” The Sun reported on Wednesday. “The judge heard Jace is enrolled in school and everything was going well, so things will continue as they have been and he will for now remain with her.”

After the court hearing, Jace left the courthouse with Barbara.

As The Ashley previously stated, this court hearing had nothing to do with David or his charge.

UPDATE 2: After arriving back on The Land after court, Jenelle complained about the paparazzi being at the hearing, as well as about being “lied to” by CPS and the detective working her case. 

“The whole point you’re missing with this whole case is it’s about my son’s mental health,” she said in a TikTok. “And I will continue to say that. No matter what you guys say, this is about my son’s mental health, that’s it. Y’all can hate me as much as you want. It’s not going to stop me from posting content. It’s not going to stop me from being the best mother I can be! And it’s not gonna cause me to get into the depression where I just run and hide in a hole!

“…I’m gonna make sure that I’m taking care of my mental health and that I’m completely fine, and so are my kids,” she continued. “…I’m gonna stand strong and I’m gonna support my husband, because I know the truth, God knows the truth. And YOU don’t!”

She then blasted the cops and CPS.

“At this point, you’ve got the Columbus County Sheriff’s Department lying to me. I have CPS that’s kinda acting like they’re on my side, but not really. 2016/12/20

(2:00) Interviewer, knowing Ukraine has renowned music schools, thought Zhou Shen went to Ukraine specifically to study music before she found out he actually was in dentistry and then switched to music; she asks why he went to Ukraine to study.

Zhou Shen: Simple! Because it’s cheap. (T/N: it’s extremely extremely cheap compared to studying abroad in other countries, and Zhou Shen’s family was quite poor)

(3:00) How did you win your parents over?

ZS: I didn’t. I told them, “Hey, I don’t think I can do this” and they were like “What?” I said, “I really can’t do this.” At first, they didn’t really understand what I was going through at the time. They said, even if I had to retake a year or two, they wanted me to keep going. They said, then take some time to improve in the language. I said, “I really can’t do this anymore,” they said no, and later I went against their wishes and applied to the music conservatory anyways.

(7:30) ZS talks about how he didn’t talk to his parents for months after switching schools, until finally his parents told him, “Then in the future, whatever you do is no longer our concern” and then hung up on him. 

ZS: (8:10) They said, okay we’re not giving you money for school, you figure it out yourself. But parents are like this: they say things but don’t go through with it. So they gave me money for tuition but nothing to cover living expenses. (*laughs*) (Interviewer: They said, whether you eat or not is no longer our concern) Yup. (*laughs*) They said they’d give me money for living expenses only if I studied medicine or language. So I had to borrow money from a classmate for food. I held out for 2 months, starved for 2 months before they said, okay since you’re this persistent, even though we’re still against this- (Interviewer: They still don’t want their son to starve to death) Right, they didn’t want to lose a kid. (*laughs*)

Interviewer: (9:00) When did their attitude finally soften towards your decision? 

ZS: After the Voice. (T/N: ZS didn’t tell his parents before he competed on the show; they found out along with the rest of the public when it aired) [...] They thought, ah okay he’ll be able to take care of himself now, he knows what he’s doing.

Interviewer: (9:50) Are they proud of you?

ZS: Oh yeah, they’re absolutely embarrassing. (*laughs*) After the episode aired, my parents- they run a small business, and customers who came by, my parents would be like, “Look :) who this is :)” and the customer would be like “…??…uuhh who is-“ “ITS HUAN YAN, OUR SON SANG IT!!!” (*laughs*) and then the customer is like “uuhhh ehhrmm….” I wanted to die from the embarrassment oh my gOD, it was so awkward. So awkward. Afterwards, I started avoiding being with them when they were with people. (*laughs*) They- they’re parents; they were happy, and then they started to worry. (*laughs*) This career... how long would I be able to do it for...

(11:50) ZS talks about how surprised he was by how popular Big Fish was; after only a few days, a lot of covers started appearing online. The singers for Big Fish and Begonia’s other OSTs were very big names, Eason Chan and Lala Hsu.

ZS: At first, they planned to have another very big name singer to sing Big Fish (T/N: it was supposed to be Faye Wong!), but because of reasons, their plan never came to fruition. The song’s lyricist, Yin Yue, she’s really too good to me. She kept insisting to the director, “Zhou Shen can sing this song, you should let him try,” but the director honestly didn’t care. The production company and the director, they wanted someone had enough influence to promote the film. (Interviewer: But congratulations to them, they ended up choosing the right person for the song! :D)

(19:30) ZS: “[After Masked Singer], my parents, they posted a WeChat moment they was quite touching—they said “Our son sang so well and seeing him work so hard—we want him to continue singing.” (Interviewer: Oh so they go online often?”) Yeah, only because I spent years teaching them.” (*laughs*) 

(19:45) ZS: “Every time I come home, my parents play my songs non-stop. I asked them, aren’t you sick of listening to it? Later I asked my sister, and she told me they play my songs all the time everyday. I felt like, wah (Interviewer: “All these years of being a host, and my own parents are the most avid viewers of my program.”) Wow… auntie uncle, I’m very sorry… (T/N: LKJNASFDFA THIS MADE ME SPIT OUT MY FOOD I WAS EATING HAHAHA) they’re gonna hate me. [...] I think, being a parent is really such hard work.”

2016/12/17

(5:30) ZS talks about how he didn’t sing at all during in his middle school years. Interviewer asks whether he ever tried to conceal his being different from everyone else.

ZS: Actually, when you listen to me talk, I- all these years I’ve already gotten accustomed to making my voice lower, it’s a force of habit. I’ve forgotten what my regular voice is supposed to be like. If I relaxed my throat while speaking it would sound like this—thinner, higher. But now I can’t go back.

(7:50) Interviewer asks whether he’ll try out different styles of music:

ZS: I think right now, people don’t know me well yet. I want people to first know who Zhou Shen is, what kind of songs he sings, and then try other genres, and only then will people want to listen. If release a song, people will be like, who’s Zhou Shen and won’t try listening to it—and if they listen and it’s a genre I’m not good at? Wow, no one’s going to listen.

2018/02/03

(1:50) ZS: “Well for one thing, I really hate my voice. (Interviewer: Why?) A male with this kind of voice is really weird. (Interviewer: It’s unique! It’s memorable. Can you find other people with this kind of voice?) Yup. My dad. (*laughs*) One time, my manager called my dad and he- “Hello?” “Oh hello auntie-” I was like “wAIT WAIT WAIT that’s my dad” (*laughs*) (Interviewer: Can he sing too?) No way, he scares people to death when he sings, he can’t sing. (*laughs*)

(7:45) After Big Fish was released:

ZS: Everyone seemed to like it, it felt- Eh? This is great. After about two weeks though, comments started to appear like: “just found out a man sang this and I feel like vomiting, I deleted this song immediately.” And it wasn’t just this one, there were many comments like it. It was extremely upsetting. I felt like, one of those characters in a sad drama, the kind that gets abandoned and they’re crying like “what did I do to you to make you treat me like this? TT^TT”

Interviewer: It’s like, even if there’s a whole pile of positive comments, if there’s one negative, that’s the one you pay attention to. Even if there are 100 nice comments—

ZS: —if there’s one hurtful comment, that’s the one that sticks with you, exactly! Everyone has this tendency.

(7:20) ZS talks about his duet with Guo Qin again (see translation from another interview talking about it here), how he was just as nervous as he was in his own blind audition and how he would’ve blamed himself if she had lost: “She’s 17—super young, makes me so mad—and she was sitting so calmly; meanwhile, I was standing there, all my limbs trembling—like, who’s supposed to be helping who here?” (*laughs*)

(14:45) About how he’s grateful that he didn’t get popular overnight: 

ZS: If I got popular overnight, I think it would’ve been over for me. Because my singing really did need improvement. Also, I think my album is really important in that in helped me get through a bottleneck period. At that time, I felt like, no matter how I sang it didn’t sound good. I felt like, can I even sing? But the process of recording this album helped me to see where I needed to improve. 

So if I got popular overnight, it really would’ve been over for me, because my singing wouldn’t have improved. It would’ve stopped there. (Interviewer: And you would still believe that you’re really good.) Everyone around you is praising you like (*rapid clapping*) “You sing so well!! You sing so well!! Look at how everyone wants to hire you to sing, you sing super well!!” It’s over- it would really be over. […] I quite like progressing one step at a time.

(18:10) Zhou Shen talks about how, when he got eliminated on the Voice, he wasn’t crying because he lost, but because suddenly going from spending so much time together as a team and having such camaraderie to all but four eliminated was too heartbreaking.

ZS: (20:20) When I got eliminated, I was actually really happy. I don’t like competing, and I felt I didn’t have any pressure on me anymore. I felt bad for Li Wei because I knew there would definitely be a lot more pressure on him now, because now he has to represent our entire team in the future competition. 

After our PK, he—because we both cried so hard—he said (*shrill crying voice*) “Zhou Shen I’ll carry your name and compete to the end!! TT^TT” (*Interviewer laughs*) and I replied, (*shrill crying voice*) “You shouldn’t give yourself so much pressure, don’t carry my name just sing TT^TT” (*laughs*) 

You don’t understand how hard we were crying. After the PK, there had to be a 25-minute intermission because Na-jie had to cry too. So she’s there crying in the mentor area and I’m crying in the eliminated area and Li Wei’s crying in the advancement area. [...] During the blind auditions, every single person earned their place in the team one by one, and now all of them are being taken out one by one—it was quite brutal.

2018/02/10

(1:30) Zhou Shen talks about how he has a longer process to be accepted compared to other singers, because they first have to get over the fact that a man has this type of voice before they truly listen to him sing. Some people react like, WOW amazing!! while others are on the other end of the spectrum:

ZS: Once, I was at a restaurant and at that time, they were broadcasting the blind auditions of the Voice. The restaurant owner just happened to be watching it, and when I appeared, he was like “Eh? Who’s this- WAH-“ and immediately changed the channel. I was like ??? D’: ????? “…can I have some water?” (*laughs*) He changed the channel right in front of me, you know? He didn’t recognize me. It was- (*makes disgruntled noises*) It was really upsetting.

(2:20) ZS, about being on Masked Singer: “That was the first time I felt acknowledged by the sentence ‘wow this girl sings so well!’”

(20:30) In the three years since your debut, have you ever seen a fan who, because of your songs or your voice, their life changed?

ZS: Have I seen that personally? That would be impossible, but I have read about it in letters and comments. There was one comment, this person—they had depression, the kind that they were being prescribed medication for—but they started listening to my music and slowly started to become happier, their mental health improved. I was so astonished—music is really so powerful.

Another one was- to be honest, men with this type of voice are actually not uncommon. It’s really not just me. Once, I was at karaoke with an old schoolmate—middle school or high school, I forget—and he said, “because of you, Zhou Shen, because you sang in that competition [the Voice], I’m now brave enough to sing at karaoke. It feels like, even with this kind of voice, I can sing too.” That moment—I was so moved.

(3:45) ZS talks about how Gao Xiaosong was really satisfied with how the album turned out, and how Gao Xiaosong is actually really thin.

Interviewer: Why do you always have to mention that? No one is asking about whether he’s fat or thin.
