Opinions on jaime/catelyn
LOVE jamcat. Him with his childhood crush on her, her fancying him even though he tried to kill two of her children (she doesn’t know about the third) and is covered in his own shit ❤️
Also of all the potential arranged marriages amongst the Robert’s Rebellion generation, I think Jaime and Catelyn would’ve had some of the best chemistry. Obviously they both come with baggage (Jaime moreso than Cat) but there’d be a clear mutual attraction + two people who value honesty and would appreciate how direct the other is.
Also they’re both passionate individuals and family is important to both. I think getting Jaime away from Cersei would still be a bit messy at that age, but before the KG he did always assume this would come to pass, and honestly I think Jaime and Cersei would’ve grown out of their relationship had it not been for Cersei’s Kingsguard plot. They weren’t remotely destined to be what they became post Rebellion, the full extent of that toxicity is very circumstantial.
So if Jaime hadn’t joined the KG, Cersei would’ve left the Rock, Jaime would’ve had plenty of distraction in becoming heir and beginning his own family - and that would’ve been that. I think he and Cat probably would’ve been quite a normal and even happy couple, just with Tywin as a nightmare father-in-law.

more asoiaf comparisons, parallels & antiparallels to the first dance of the dragons vs the second & final dance of the dragons (& possibly the sixth blackfyre rebellion): the blacks being daenerys i targaryen's supporters, the golds being aegon vi targaryen's supporters, tommen baratheon being a close equivalent to gaemon palehair & his mother essie & sylvenna sand which may be interpreted as a parallel with queen cersei lannister & taena merryweather of myr, trystane truefyre being a close equivalent to aegon/young griff & perkin being jon connington & the shepherd being the new high septon the high sparrow, dalton greyjoy being euron i greyjoy's ancestor & the latter surpassing him, alyn waters later alyn velaryon resembling aurane waters later aurane velaryon & finishing what their ancestors started. history repeats itself.
#out of the galaxy. || ooc.#LIKE!!!! LOOK AT THE PARALLELS BRUH#it kinda makes me wonder who the hightowers would support this time...#its literally so wild how history repeats itself#i think the lannisters would support aegon after he takes king's landing bc they're lowkey fucked either way.#cersei lannister's probably either in hiding at casterly rock or will end up as aegon's political prisoner. maybe jaime too idk.#i have no idea who would lead the lannisters on the side of the golds now that kevan's dead killed by varys tho... maybe genna lannister?#cersei jaime & tyrion's aunt? to parallel johanna lannister who attacked the ironborn like a boss bitch??#i personally predict aegon'll marry sansa who would have the north the riverlands & the vale at her back—it'd be arranged by baelish & varys#i also think it's possible he'd take arianne martell as another wife to parallel aegon & his wives visenya & rhaenys.#so by taking sansa & arianne as his wives & queens both of whom are well beloved in their countries he'd restore honor to their houses.#bc aerys & later the baratheon dynasty was a terrible time for the starks & the martells so he brings the north & dorne back into the fold.#so by marrying sansa he honors & respects her given her past betrothal to joffrey & forced marriage to tyrion & mending what aerys did#particularly to her grandfather rickard stark & her uncle brandon stark & to her aunt lyanna stark.#& by marrying arianne he's restoring honor to house martell considering all the bs his mother elia martell experienced in king's landing.#(whether elia actually Is his mother or who he perceives her to be) & restoring the line of succession again in dornish hands#& they'd probably marry him on the condition that the northerners & dornish gets special rights & privileges that others don't.#& not to mention that the targaryens starks & martells have a common enemy.#polygamy's a big nono in the faith of the seven but that didn't stop aegon & his wives & im sure after everything w/ the faith rn??#w/ cersei & the sparrows?? & considering aegon's actually a decent person & he'll be foreshadowed to be popular & loved??#i don't think most would bat an eye tbh. i actually think daenerys would wanna talk to aegon first tho.#then everything & everyone around them goes to shit & they end up fighting bc like. daenerys wants SO BADLY to have a family.#so like i don't see her immediately perceiving aegon as a threat.#the starks & most of the north would prolly be wary of dany @ 1st due to aerys & having a MASSIVE army w/ three dragons until the long night#except for like. maybe jon. but anyway the martells could be slightly wary of dany bc of what happened with quentyn in meereen.#idk maybe there's a division in the north & dorne. i think sansa & arianne would actually get along personally.#anyway im presuming stannis is gonna be at the nightfort & i personally don't think he's ever gonna come south again. he'll die at the wall.

Any headcanons on the friendship between Rhaella, Johanna, and the Princess of Dorne?
Yes lots! I think Rhaella was a pretty shy child who was further pushed into her shell by having Aerys who was more outgoing as a sibling. I think she was also quite jealous of aerys having a tight-knight friendship group of him tywin and steffon so she sort of subconsciously emulated it when she formed her own friendship group.
Rhaella was liked by both the princess of dorne and joanna lannister against their better judgement. Joanna I headcanon as sort of being the poor cousin to the main lannister branch so she was already jealous of rhaellas superior position and ready to dislike her but she found herself liking Rhaella's random moments of acerbic wittyness whenever her queenly mask dropped too much and then she was just very sorry for Rhaella. I DO NOT think she seduced aerys secretley or whatever and i think she was deeply insulted for both herself and Rhaella whenever he was inappropriate with her. She used to mock Aerys to Tywin's face and say that out of the two of them she had the cleverer (targaryen) friend.
The Princess of Dorne was sort of not expecting to be that close to Joanna and Rhaella because they were younger than she was and she was kind of just there to curry favour with the royal family but she viewed them both as the little sisters she never had. She liked Rhaella's grit and determination to survive in the face of all her troubles and admired her ability to control her temper. I think she liked Joanna because Joanna was also as ambitious as she was and she viewed them very much as kindred spirits and was very sad when she died.
Rhaella liked Joanna and the PoD because they both had qualities which she herself didnt (ambition, in the PoD's case a fiery temper) but also because she had always wanted sisters and didnt have them.
the PoD died before the war and one of Rhaellas thoughts was that she was glad her friend died before this because she would have been too embarassed and horrified to explain how she had promised to keep her old friends daughter safe but had instead let her son mistreat her (it wasnt rhaellas fault but she feels like she was partially guilty because she didnt try to curb rhaegars prophecy obsession early and to some extent encouraged his interest in books and arcane scrolls)

A thread of parallels between Elia Martell and Sansa Stark:
1. Elia is the older sister to Oberyn. Sansa is the eldest stark sister.

6. Cersei blames them both for taking someone from her- Rhaegar and Joffrey.
“It had to have been the madness that led Aerys to refuse Lord Tywin's daughter and take his son instead, whilst marrying his own son to a feeble Dornish princess with black eyes and a flat chest.” -Cersei
"I most certainly have not forgotten that little she-wolf…She helped murder my son.” - Cersei

9. Victims of the Lannisters.
“Some said it had been Gregor who'd dashed the skull of the infant prince Aegon Targaryen against a wall, and whispered that afterward he had raped the mother, the Dornish princess Elia, before putting her to the sword.” - Tyrion
“When I displease him, he has the Kingsguard beat me. He's evil and cruel, my lady, it's so. And the queen as well." - Sansa

Conclusion: Both deserved better

GRRM Loves Convoluted Succession
Stark Succesion
Bran is technically heir to Winterfell except he is believed to be dead and cannot father children/heirs.
Which would make Rickkon heir to Winterfell, but he is also believed to be dead.
So Sansa is heir to the North, but she has been disinherited due to marrying into the Lannister family. However, if Tyrion is believed to be dead then she could potentially be restored to succession as the Northerners know her Lannister marriage is the only reason she was removed from the line of succession.
Though if that never comes to pass, then Arya is heir, but she is also believed to be dead.
Ah, and Jon has been legitimized by Robb, which makes Jon heir to the North, but only if the Northmen come out of the war victorious with a Stark monarch. Because only a King can legitimize a bastard (and whether or not Robb was a proper King is debatable and depends on if the North successfully achieves independence). Not to mention how Jon’s Targaryen blood could further complicate things.
Targaeryan Succession
If Young Griff can actually prove he is Aegon son of Rhaegar, then he would be heir to the iron throne (never mind the Targaryen’s were usurped). However, Rhaegar and his children were taken out of the line of succession and Viserys was made Aerys heir (whether or not this is valid who knows).
If it is valid, then that means Daenerys’ claim is the best. Plus, she can actually prove she’s who she says she is, and more importantly she has dragons and possibly lots of powerful backers in the near future.
Jon would have a solid claim if Lyanna and Rhaegar were married, except even if they were no one would see that marriage as valid (the show was so dumb for that). Because Rhaegar had consummated his marriage to Elia and produced heirs with her. Ah, but if Young Griff is a Blackfyre then Jon’s claim would potentially still be better than his. Also, regardless of his bastardly, if Jon were to become consort to Daenerys that could strengthen both their claims and Young Griff would be in a very poor position politically if they did so.
Lannister Succession
Jaime would be heir to Casterly Rock, except that he is a member of King’s Guard and cannot hold lands or titles. However, he could potentially be released from his King’s Guard vows (due to the precedent set by releasing Barristen Selmy), and in that case he would be heir to Casterly Rock.
Tyrion would be next in line in Lannister succession, except that he is a kinslayer and for all intents and purposes an exile with no real claim. Unless of course the throne was usurped again, and the new monarch restored Tyrion as heir to Casterly Rock.
As it stands right now, Cersei is the rightful Lady of Casterly Rock. However, as stated above, that is likely subject to change once she no longer possesses the Iron Throne. Plus, if Jaime were released from his vows he could challenge her claim (he probably wouldn’t, but who knows).
Greyjoy Succession
So technically Theon is the heir to the Iron Isles, except that he is believed to be dead, was presumably passed over in favour of Asha, and cannot produce heirs himself.
Which leaves Asha with the best claim. Except that a Kingsmoot was called (fuck you very much for that Aeron) and Euron was declared King of the Iron Isles.
Except, that due to the fact that Theon is actually alive (and has the best-ish claim) but was not allowed to press his claim at the Kingsmoot, that makes the Kingsmoot, well, moot. Seeing as Theon is alive and was not allowed to be “voted for” so to speak. Making Euron’s claim via the Kingsmoot invalid. Also, it’s already tricky enough for a brother to press a claim against a daughter, but for a brother to press a claim against a daughter and a son is a hell of a lot harder. Especially when your whole claim relied on, A) a man having more rights than a woman, and B) a one night popularity contest. Still, he’s a King as of now and will be hard-pressed to give it up.
Victarion… lmfao
Aeron. This is even more pathetic somehow.
Martell Succession
Arrianne was heir to Dorne, but then (presumably) she was betrothed to Viserys with the intent being for her to be Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. But Viserys died, which means she is again first in line for Dorne.
Quentyn was (presumably) meant to rule Dorne until Viserys died and he was pushed back in succession.
Tully Succession
Edmure is now Lord of Riverrun, except that he has no heir. So if for some reason he and his wife Roslin Frey die before they have children, then one of Catelyn’s kids would be heir to Riverrun (as she is the next in line due to seniority, but dead herself).
Arryn Succession
Robert Arryn of course, has the best claim, but if he doesn’t make it to the end of the series then Harry the Heir is next up. And who knows who would be next after him.
Baratheon Succession
As Robert and Renly are dead, Stannis is definitively Lord of Storm’s End. However, he only has one heir, Shireen. Who GRRM has confirmed will die, likely quite soon. Which leaves Stannis without an heir.
As such, Stannis could legitimize one of Robert’s bastard, probably Edric Storm. Since he has two high born parents, that like Shireen, are a Baratheon father and a Florent mother respectively.
However, that hinges on Edric Storm making it out of the series alive, because if he doesn’t, then the claim to Storm End’s is going to be a bloody free-for-all between all of Robert’s bastards, cousins and other relatives. And at this point the realm can’t survive too much more in-fighting.
The Tyrells are the only ones who have their shit together. For now.

What if Cersei did indeed marry Rhaegar? Cause I don't think they would have been happy despite what Cersei thinks and sooner or later she's gonna realize that Rhaegar is not how she imagined him.
She wouldn't be happy at all. Rhaegar's priority will remain the prophecy. I know some people think Cersei would be able to give Rhaegar his 3 heads easily unlike Elia but
Elia got pregnant immediately each time. They got married in Jan, she gave birth in Sept. He saw a comet, went to Elia (who was either on bedrest or had just left bedrest) and she got pregnant immediately. Cersei isn't infertile and she did take moontea whenever Robert raped her but Joffrey was born 2+ years after her wedding. We have no evidence that Cersei drank moontea every time she and Jaime had sex (including the morning of her wedding). I'm not comparing their fertility for fun, I'm just saying that there will be a lot of pressure on Cersei to get pregnant on Rhaegar's bizarre timetable before he starts entertaining the idea of seeking someone else. Elia had to deal with racism and xenophobia from Aerys as well and I doubt Aerys would be very forgiving towards Tywin's daughter. So if Cersei takes a year or longer to get pregnant (which is normal, fyi the reason Elia is super fertile is because GRRM compressed the timeline of the events leading to Robert's Rebellion), she'd be dealing with Aerys' hostility and Rhaegar's wandering eye
Elia was declared infertile after giving birth to Aegon and almost dying (or at least a third pregnancy would kill her). Most people blame this on her 'delicate health' and Cersei, being a healthy young woman, would easily avoid this to give Rhaegar his 3 required kids. Here's the problem - Elia's chronic illness isn't why she couldn't have a third kid, it's Rhaegar impregnating her back to back on whims of his interpretation of an old prophecy. Elia almost died giving birth to Rhaenys. She was on bedrest for 6 months. She was still in recovery when she got pregnant again because of some comet. Then months later, she was in Harrenhal getting humiliated in front of all of Westeros (the noble houses that is). Of course, Aerys was present suspecting treason which must have been fun for his Dornish daughter in law whom he hated. She then travelled to Dorne to show her daughter to her family before returning to Dragonstone. That's a lot of strain on the body, even for a healthy woman. Once she gave birth, almost dying again, her husband plucked at his harp sadly before leaving to impregnate a teenager. That is just not an environment conducive to having healthy pregnancies and births. Cersei would be subjected to similar stresses, even if she gets pregnant quickly or takes a year or two because the people she'll be dealing with aren't rational or empathetic
Plus, Cersei would be a teen bride. If she married Rhaegar soon after Steffon's death, she'd be 12 or 13. If she marries him when Elia did, she'd be 14. Rhaegar was 22 in 280 AC. Aerys isn't going to wait for Cersei to grow up. Rhaella gave birth for the first time at 13 after all. So we have a teenager giving birth back to back (which will wreck her body and likely give her fertility issues like Rhaella) or we have a teenager under a lot of stress to give birth as quickly as possible which will lead to health issues or the same thing happening to her - Harrenhal then Robert's Rebellion
What if Cersei has twins? There's a chance that could happen. What would Rhaegar do if his third child comes out with a twin? What if she has a miscarriage? What if she takes years between each birth?
I can't imagine in such an environment that Cersei wouldn't grow to hate Rhaegar

Pairing(s): implied/referenced Rhaegar Targaryen x Stark!Reader, Ned Stark x Catelyn Tully, Robert Baratheon x Cersei Lannister
Warnings: canonical character death, illegitimacy, cat actually loves jon in this story, drabble, short, robert and cersei actually like eachother
Words: 1269
Lyanna watches Jon from atop of the courtyard's parapet, her eyes crinkling with pride as she watches Jon best Theon Greyjoy at the dance of swords. Every victory Jon made resulted in him outgrowing the label of bastard. He was so much more than a bastard of Winterfell. Not even Catelyn saw him as such. Many were so shocked when the news came that Ned had brought back his bastard one day. In fact Cat had shown up at Winterfell by his side as he held the infant in his arms, for she was one of three that knew the truth about Jon Snow.
Heartache nibbles at her heart when she recalls fifteen years prior. She remembers her sister (y/n). The fever of her cheeks as she held her newborn son in her arms. But she wasn't faring well. Birth rendered her near lifeless, allowing her to slip slowly away into the Stranger's arms. It was only a matter of time. She refused to leave the Tower of Joy, understood her fate as well as her siblings and sister-in-law did. (y/n) had just been content with the fact that she'd birthed a healthy baby boy.
"Jon." Her watery eyes turn up to Lyanna. "His name is Jon."
Tumblr media
After Rhaegar's closest friend. Jon Connington was the one to deliver the note to Winterfell, ensuring it fell into the safe hands of the young Warden of the North himself. He'd been instructed by his revered lady, Princess (y/n) Targaryen.
The name was a slap to the face. A year prior to the birth of her son, (y/n) had supposedly been kidnapped by Rhaegar Targaryen who was supposed to marry Elia Martell the following day. Both up and vanished without a trace. Lord Rickard Stark was beside himself with grief and agony that they stormed to the capital to demand answers from King Aerys himself. Lord Rickard and his heir Brandon accused the king of hiding the location of Rhaegar and (y/n), said that she was to be returned immediately and the prince punished. But Aerys didn't take kindly to the slander they were slewing against the crown. He had them executed.
Ensuing blood shed consumed the Seven Kingdoms. Rhaegar appeared only on the battlefield with his own men. They fought against not just the king, but Ned and his own allies which included Storm's End. No sign of (y/n) nearby.
After Robert Baratheon killed Rhaegar and the regicide of the Mad King by the young lion Jaime Lannister, there was still no clue as to where (y/n) could be.
Robert, though it was Jaime who slew the king, secured the Iron Throne for himself. That meant Lyanna would be queen as she was engaged to Robert. She refused.
When Ned implored her to marry Robert, she gave him the tongue lashing of the century but it did the job in shutting him up. He couldn't force Lyanna to do something she didn't want to. That lesson was learned in childhood. If she desired to stay in the North then she would stay. Slighted at first, it didn't take him long to choose another bride. Cersei Lannister. A beautiful couple. Lyanna was happy that Robert even seemed to be truly smitten with the golden haired girl. They couldn't keep their hands off of each other.
Or so she was told. She couldn't attend their lavish wedding, not when her sister was still out there somewhere.
Day and night she worked in searching for (y/n). Northmen scattered across the vast land took part in looking for her.
They'd nearly given up.
And then Jon Connington delivered a letter in (y/n)'s handwriting.
She and Rhaegar had eloped. Rhaegar couldn't marry Elia Martell, he didn't love her but there was absolutely no way that Aerys would let him marry (y/n) Stark. Even (y/n) had kept her love for him a secret from everyone in her family.
Getting married as soon as they could. They had a short honeymoon for the war started shortly after. Jon Connington was entrusted with (y/n)'s safety, and though he wanted to be with Rhaegar on the battlefield, he held (y/n) in high regard. He agreed without much hesitation.
Soon she discovered she was pregnant. The pregnancy wasn't going well for her. She was constantly sick and weak. She didn't have long.
In her note, (y/n) specifically wanted Lyanna, Ned and his new bride to come. Only them. They were not to tell anyone else. Cat was loathe to leave her own baby Robb but knew how important this was for Ned and his family so of course she agreed to go. Leaving Robb pained her.
Jon was but a week old by the time they arrived to the Tower of Joy. The Sword of the Morning himself stood guard at the tower's entrance.
The babe was healthy. The same couldn't be said of his mother.
She was gaunt, so gray. This wasn't the sister Ned and Lyanna grew up with. Her smile was still the same though, even if it was a little strained. To each of them she spoke to, having the other two wait.
All of them, including Jon Connington and Arthur Dayne were to take this secret to their graves.
(y/n) died two days later.
Tumblr media
"I know that look."
Lyanna jolts at Ned's voice, ripped from her melancholic memories. She presses her lips together. Ned grew into a fine lord. A horde of children filled the halls of the castle. Among them was the boy they thought their bastard brother. "Sometimes I can't help but think about her when I see him. He has her big, sweet eyes."
Ned nods. "He does." He rests his forearms on the wooden rail and looks down into the courtyard where Jon swung his sword in the way that Arthur Dayne had shown him that morning. Off to the distance was Jon Connington watching with a close eye. Theon and Robb are trying it out as well.
Jon was thriving. No one caught on to the truth of him. Never even breaching the surface. Many asked who the mother was since Ned agreed to claim fathership over him.
Bittersweet for the siblings watching their nephew grow up without his real mother and father. It was better this way. (y/n) wanted her son to grow up in the north opposed to the death and discrimination he might receive from being raised in the capital. Not just that, but Robert Baratheon was now entirely against the entire Targaryen line. He was already trying to locate the missing Prince Viserys and Princess Daenerys with plans to execute them if they're ever found. Children. It was insane that his queen was supporting the king's search for them. His claim to the throne was in danger as long as there was even one Targaryen left alive. And unfortunately Jon was included.
That day his sister died, Ned swore to her that he would protect Jon with his life; even if that meant protecting him against his own friend he thought of as a brother. Lyanna, Ned and Cat had spent sleepless nights speaking about the possibility of Robert finding out about Jon. Their voices hushed, only the quiet flame in the fireplace bore witness to the secrets being discussed.
They would never allow the secret of Jon's parents to become public knowledge. (y/n) entrusted Jon's life to them and they would not disappoint her. They would defend the boy with their life and take his secret to the afterlife.

The longed-for reunion he had pictured is tempered by an unexpected chill. The reality before him dashes his hopes of a heartwarming reconnection. You Were My Crown(Now I'm In Exile): Elia-centric, Elia Martell/Rhaegar Targaryen, Elia Martell/Baelor Hightower.
Shortly following her death, Elia Martell is granted an unexpected opportunity for a new beginning. Armed with insight into her own future, she's resolute in evading the path she once walked. We Fall Apart As It Gets Dark: Elia-centric, Elia Martell/Brandon Stark, Elia Martell/Rhaegar Targaryen.
The apparent abduction of Lyanna Stark sets off a chain of events: Brandon Stark and his allies march to the Red Keep, where Brandon demands Rhaegar's head. A duel is called by Aerys, and fire serves as his champion, leading to the death of Brandon's father and Brandon's own imprisonment. It's only after these events that a letter arrives at Winterfell, written by Lyanna herself, explaining that she left of her own accord. The deaths of the Lord of Winterfell and the Heir of the Eyrie, along with Aerys' demand for the heads of Robert and Ned, ignite a rebellion. Elia, isolated in Kings Landing without her children, must play her role as the dutiful wife. However, complications arise when the man who once demanded her husband’s head becomes her constant companion, the Kingsguard sworn to her. Will she stay true to her duty or follow her husband's example and forsake it?

Reckless: Elia-centric, Elia Martell/Rhaegar Targaryen, angst.
"Get out," she tells him. "Leave." "You're not going to talk to me?" His voice comes out hoarse; she wonders why. "You've done enough!" she lets out. He looks disappointed when she says it, his eyes clouding over. She almost apologizes for snapping at him. But she reminds herself that he shouldn't be here at all, he shouldn't be here with her. "Goodbye, Rhaegar," she says gently, not allowing any trace of emotion to surface in her voice. The name sounds foreign coming out of her mouth, as though it belongs to someone else. She wishes for the days to go back to before he met Lyanna. Before everything turned sour. Before it was too late. or Rhaegar returns to her but things are difficult now.
Tumblr media
What Is Meant For You Will Stay: Rhaenys-centric, angst.
Rhaenys was gently shaken awake. The sheets beneath her rustled a bit as she moved, the night shift she wore rode up as she squirmed trying to get away from the callous hands that shook her awake. Her mind was foggy and disoriented as she stirred awake. Rhaenys sprung to life when her mind finally registered that someone was with her, in her chambers, late at night. Her eyes searched wildly in the darkness, desperately trying to catch a glimpse of the stranger. “A man does not wish to harm the Princess,” the voice came out in a low tone, almost like a faint whisper, “The Princess must remain calm,” the voice was masculine and Rhaenys felt the fear within her tremble. or Rhaegar flees to Essos with his family, though he leaves his daughter behind. Years later, he hires a faceless man to bring her to him.

is it okay that this lady is in the dead ladies club?
i simply wanted the excuse to talk about the moms. i'm not including ashara, elia, or lyanna in this, because the last two are plot relevant deaths and ashara's is left purposefully mysterious I think because we are going to get some sort of answer there (not even implying "lemore is ashara" here, i think the fact that we have conflicting info on her does mean something about her baby being relevant to the tower of joy, which means howland or bran/the weirwood hivemind are going to reveal that to us. will it be a huge reveal that shakes the earth? i mean, probably not, but i do think it will be relevant).
let’s gooo-
joanna lannister is a dead mom with some narrative weight to her. all three lannisters think about how different their lives might have been, define themselves by the gaping absence of her in their life, and the fact that jaime commits more violence in the riverlands, convinces himself it’s a job well done, and of all people it’s his MOTHER who comes to him in a dream just to be like “this is your conscious speaking, you’re a fucking idiot get your life together dude,” you really feel that this is a family that was wrecked by the loss of their mother at a young age. it Is noticeable that we don’t get much of an idea of her personality compared to the men tho.
can she stay in the dead ladies club? yes, i think this is a well thought out dead mom, i simply wish she had slightly more characterization than “loving mom & wife.”
minisa whent gets less characterization, i think bc we only have cat as insight into her, so i can sort of forgive that, esp since i do think it’s noticeable that for all cat is really fuckijg busy most of the time, she does think about her mother and wonder if she would have been happier with her mother around. lysa & edmure only get to be Like That because they really had no adult taking care of them except cat who was still all but a child herself, so you can feel minisa’s absence in the characterization of her children and the damage her death did to the tully siblings.
can she stay in the dead ladies club? yes, i think this is a well thought out dead mom, although once again i wish we had the opportunity to get information on the type of person she was outside of "loving mother." i do think that minisa and joanna are meant to mirror each other in this way though - they died so young that they are forever frozen in the minds of their children as these paragons of goodness, as a reminder of where their lives went wrong, and what might have happened if things had been a little less sad for them.
what’s interesting about loreza nymeros martell is that we don’t even know what her actual name IS or her age or when she died AND YET despite how little time we spend with characters that knew her, Doran names her as an influence on him and quotes her, and this scene - “this is your kingdom” in the water gardens - is usually pointed to as one of those scenes that are The Point Of The Series. the writing around her is certainly clunky but at least you can tell there was thought put into the kind of person doran’s mother was and how she might have influenced doran's life. i also think it's notable here that we know she was up to things besides giving birth - she was a lady at court, she was friendly with joanna and rhaella, she was attempting to engage her kids to non dornish lords so she was clearly very pro-Dorne Being Involved as opposed to having an isolationist bent. we know a decent amount about her personality, and we don't even know who she marries, which is honestly kind of funny - so many of these characters only think about their fathers yet doran only thinks of his mother.
can she stay in the dead ladies club? yes, but we are deducting points for not having arianne think about her at all and also still not knowing her name.
cassana eastermont is a question mark but to be fair,,,,,so is steffon and that is kind of the point of both of them. cassana and steffon were at court, and then died, so like the other siblings of this era, the baratheon boys grew up Without An Adult In The Room except for Maester Cressen. the tragedy of Cressen being helpless to keep his boys together, and dying in a vain attempt to save what’s left of stannis and renly’s souls, it doesn’t really work if any of them have a lot of fond memories that they dwell over of cassana or steffon. and no one has any real idea how aware steffon was of the whisperings of rebellion against aerys because they’re so absent from the narrative, it’s funny that their son then became the face of that rebellion despite steffon’s targaryen mother. BUT. yeah it does objectively suck that we don’t know what cassana was up to before she had her first baby and then she dies, bc at least we know steffon was alive and doing shit, we’re just fuzzy on what. cassana begins and ends as a wife and mother, that really sucks and i wish we had gotten a single person throwaway commenting about her.
can she stay in the dead ladies club? yes, but i think if we had some throwaway lines about her, as an example, fostering at Storm's End so Rhaelle had some female company (since she had no daughters, and only the one son) and her and Steffon met and married that way, so that we know she existed before becoming a mother.
rhaella targaryen is an interesting example because we not only have several characters who remark on her and knew her, we actually get a significant amount of characterization for her. she was clearly romantic enough to entertain fantasies of running off with bonifer hasty and yet pragmatic enough to not pull a stunt like that. "mindful of her duty" as it's put, but also rebelling against her brother-husband in ways by being openly kind to rhaegar and embracing rhaenys and elia. stubborn enough to crown viserys on dragonstone. a loving mother whose loss broke viserys' mind. but...like did she have to die in childbirth? did daenerys have to have no memories of her whatsoever? would it not have been perfectly within the plot george wanted if rhaella and ser willem darry were with her, and died of a fever at the same time?
can she stay in the dead ladies club? no, i think it's really annoying and dumb that rhaella dies on dragonstone giving birth to dany. i dont think it changes the plot in any way if rhaella had stayed alive for four or five years after dany's birth, and if dany thought about her mother from time to time. it is honestly one of the my Main quibbles with this series, that dany never thinks about the women in her family when she thinks of leaders and rulers, only the men.
lyarra stark is in my opinion the most egregious example of a woman in the dead ladies club. no personality, no in canon mentions of her, no idea when she dies, george didn't even think about her until twoiaf. there were theories and mystery surrounding her and the answer was "george did not think she was relevant" and it sure is fun and intersting to look at which dead characters are irrelevant and which ones get characterization (see comments about steffon vs cassana). i get wanting most of the grandparents to be dead by the end of robert's rebellion - a lot of the point is that the sets of siblings from the rebellion era are very isolated from their childhoods, signified by the losses of their parents and especially their mothers (as motherhood and childhood are kind of intrinsically linked together). but why did she have to die before the rebellion? why does ned never once think about her? why must it always be the mother who is inconsequential while the father makes history? to throw george's own words at him, the woman is important too!
can she stay in the dead ladies club? no, there's just no reason why she couldn't have lived to the rebellion, been the Stark in Winterfell alongside Benjen, and died during the war, either of grief, shock, or potentially even after an attempt at finding lyanna herself goes awry.

Why do you think Joanna Lannister wanted an alliance with Dorne?
I suspect we are never going to get a full answer to this question in canon (unless GRRM remembers to include it in Fire & Blood, vol. 2) so what I'm saying here is pretty much all speculation.
I personally like the theory (which I believe was @joannalannister's, though it might have originated with @lyannas or @madaboutasoiaf) that the Princess of Dorne joined Rhaella Targaryen's household as a lady-in-waiting either during or slightly before the War of the Ninepenny Kings. Joanna Lannister was also part of Rhaella's train, and I like the idea that the three women were close, and that they intended to seal that closeness with a series of marriage alliances.
We're talking about the year 273 AC. Queen Rhaella has just suffered a string of miscarriages and stillbirths, and Rhaegar is her only son (now aged 13-14). Joanna has the twins (aged 7ish), and the Unnamed Princess has Oberyn and Elia, who are 15-17ish, respectively. We know from the story Oberyn tells Tyrion that his mother took him and Elia on a Grand Tour of sorts, across Dorne, to Oldtown, and finally, to Casterly Rock. Oberyn believes his mother intended a double betrothal--him to Cersei, Elia to Jaime--but this seems strange for a few reasons.
One, Elia is significantly older than Jaime (as much as 8-10 years), which would mean that any potential heirs to Casterly Rock would need to wait until she was well into her twenties. Now, one explanation is that Elia's mother was cognizant of Elia's health issues and wanted to make sure her daughter would not get pregnant too young, and if that is the case, the betrothal actually makes perfect sense. It also squares with the fact that Elia and Rhaegar did not marry until Elia was 22 or 23, which is about the point at which she and Jaime would likely have married, if that betrothal had actually happened.
Two, we know Tywin intended to marry Cersei to Rhaegar so a grandchild of his blood could sit the Iron Throne. Of course, given Aerys II's repeated attempts to sexually assault Joanna (and his successful assaults upon Rhaella, which Joanna would have known about), she may not have wanted her daughter married to that particular king's son. A double betrothal with Dorne would have solved that problem up to a point, by making sure Cersei was out of Aerys' reach geographically. But also Oberyn may have simply been there as a red herring.
Either way, even if these two ladies had agreed on a double betrothal between their children, they may have done so to buy time for those children to grow up, and--specifically for Joanna's purposes--to separate the twins. We know she had discovered the two of them doing something (not clear what) that troubled her enough that she insisted they move to opposite sides of Casterly Rock. And if you consider the size of Casterly Rock, that is a pretty serious step on her part. I don't know that it's outside the realm of possibility that she considered sending one of them to Dorne.

everyone and their mother likes a tudor silhouette for the lannisters and i understand why! BUT I DISAGREE! i see your sleeves (which are BEAUTIFUL i will never argue that) and your skirts and i raise you:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
insane elizabethan gaudiness. skirts that force the riff raff to Keep Their Distance! ruffs god the RUFFS! embroidered and beaded until moving becomes a workout. stiff busks and small waists (looking even smaller next to that TENT of a skirt). ribbons and pearls and lace and rubies (RUBIES! DID SOMEONE SAY RUBIES? CERSEI I HAVE SOMETHING FOR YOU!) are these dresses not Dripping in luxury and finery? the silhouette is just slightly absurd enough to Stand Out okay you KNOW what era this, therefore the people of westeros KNOWWWWWWW who these people are the second they see that right angle waist. plus added benefit: those bodices are probably stiff enough to stop a blade. not that i dont literally gain years on my life every time i see cersei’s cunty chest plate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i mean (yes these are closer to costume than recreation BUT YOU GET IT OKAY YOU UNDERSTAND) its theatric its dramatic it has me looking at paintings going What is the point?????? and then i remember the point is to stop the show and draw attention and really leave a mark and is that not the lannister way? now i am known to also be a pre-tudor Plantagenet era slim silhouette yards of fabric Typical Medieval Dress fan for cersei BUT CERSEI TRANSCENDS FASHION OKAY. this is her at casterly rock. this is THE WESTERLANDS. this is who she REALLY IS. i can see it in my mind like this is a vision i KNOW it to be true
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i mean come on. guys its too easy. i can see her plotting scheming in a giant skirt and a beautiful ruff. she’s analyzing the minuscule beadwork of other court dresses trying to figure out what message she’s being sent (she is not being sent one). she orders EVERY detail of her own gowns to make sure she’s communicating properly back. ladies in waiting carry their own secret messages in beads and lace and decoration and cersei feels SOOO smart because they dont even know it. she wears gold and jewels in a pattern to mimic a maesters chain because at this point she deserves one. think also how easy it is to hide poison in this shit. so many stones that could be hollow. so many layers and folds. and listen when they’re kids and she and jaime trade clothes to pretend to be each other its EVEN EASIER cause nobody knows what you actually look like in this anyway
the wedding look went crazy okay. ruffs and the fucking. peacock head thing i can’t remember the name of. embroidered lions shimmering with ruby eyes and gold thread, dress tinkling with every move because its dripping in pearls and gold and emeralds. alright this fabric is Stiff with beading and stitching and Layers. you can’t look at cersei directly because the torchlight gleams off of her like some demented early stage psychosis medieval disco ball. golden haired golden dressed golden skinned Gold Gold Gold she exudes richness and beauty and fashion. this is fucking crazy to a baratheon court. she upstages the new king. she upstages the memory of rhaella. everyone sees now that she should have been a targaryen queen. DO YOU SEE IT. like i am such a zealot for this like this is SERIOUS TO ME. red and yellow and black and red and red and yellow and GOLD and in her insane mind these are snide allusions to rhaegar and elia and robert to everyone who can see her. and to jaime. this is a lannister woman marrying in lannister colors and she fucked her twin brother That Morning. okay that is also a silly little reference she’s making. THIS WOMAN IS CRAZY SHE DESERVES THE GAUDIEST FASHION HISTORICAL RECREATIONS CAN PROVIDE!
also if it were real (it is real. im grrm.) the allusion to elizabeth i the virgin queen sole female ruler… that just makes me giggle in and of itself.

i rest my case!

Can I ask what it would be like if Joanna!lookalike!reader were to saaaayyy…. Marry Oberyn Martell? No doubt the Lannisters would be absolutely FURIOUS and at first, Oberyn sees this as a chance to get back at them for the death of his sister Elia and her children but reader is just absolutely happy in Dorne because she loves the silk dresses that allow easier movement and much easier to “breathe” so to speak. She probably even wears the colours of House Martell but she doesn’t want to interfere with her husband and Ellaria’s relationship. Plus she gets to be close to her nice Myrcella in Dorne ☺️
Joanna!lookalike!Reader isn’t stupid or gullible, they see Oberyn and the Martell’s ulterior motives but this also gets them some space away from there own suffocating family. They hate that they have to leave Tommen, Tyrion and Jaime behind but they get to be closer to Myrcella and keep her company. That’s also one of the excuses Joanna!lookalike gives Cersei when she’s trying desperately to get the Reader to stay and not be married off. And for a moment it does make Cersei step back and think about her Myrcella but then it sinks in that the Martells will now have two of Cersei’s most treasured possessions. Her anxiety and paranoia over the situation will only worsen, especially as she’s forced to watch her darling Joanna!lookalike sail away with Oberyn.
Given that Joanna!lookalike is very accepting and tolerating of Oberyn and Ellaria’s relationship, I could see them both very easily falling into their own obsession to the Reader. Especially seeing the Reader take on the House Martell colors as their own and adjusting to Dorne being their new home, as well as trying to be on good terms with Oberyn’s daughters when he introduces the Reader to them. Although, I feel like he would be more likely to do that once he has a good idea of how thei marriage with them is going to work out and when his own obsession kicks in he’ll have a meeting with his daughters beforehand to ensure that they are civil with the Reader when meeting them.
I definitely think that Jonna!lookalike wearing the Martell colors and going around making Dorne their home would certainly help the Martells and Sand Snakes to distance the Reader from the rest of House Lannister. They’re able to not only see the Reader as their own person but also now as a part of House Martell. The Martells still very much have their grievances towards House Lannister but in this case Joanna!lookalike is their only exception. And of course also Myrcella.
Cersei would be completely in hysterics with her daughter and the Reader gone from her overprotective and watchful eye. She is overwhelmed with anxiety and paranoia at not being able to know everything going on with either of them. She will constantly write to both Joanna!lookalike and Myrcella. She definitely sought out information from Myrcella about what is really going on and how well the Reader is truly being treated in Dorne. Cersei will justify her over abundance of letters and questions to the Reader as just being worried about Myrcella and how she is in Dorne. Cersei isn’t stupid either, she can feel the Reader pulling away from her by the inconsistency in letters back from them and their vague answers/chitchat. And she doesn’t take too well to it at all. She completely believes that the Martells are overseeing the Reader’s letters and forcing them to only answer what the Martells want them to. Cersei wholeheartedly is under the impression that Joanna!lookalike and Oberyn’s marriage was nothing but the Martells taking yet another Lannister hostage and that only adds to her already festering paranoia.
Tyrion, Tommen and Jaime are the ones who get more information from the Reader regarding their new life in Dorne. They still don’t divulge all that much more than what Cersei gets but it’s still something. Especially for Tyrion to hold over Cersei’s head when he feels he needs to. Cersei will totally have Tommen and Jaime give their letters over to her to read herself so that she can have more information about what’s going on with the Reader in Dorne.
Tywin would be the one to plan a visit to Dorne or rather have the Martells come visit King’s Landing with the Reader. Imagine House Lannister’s joy at the Reader finally coming to visit only for all that joy to turn into shock and horror upon seeing how pregnant the Reader is. Not only that but Oberyn and Ellaria being all over their darling’s swollen belly and keeping everyone else at an arm’s length away from them for both the Reader and the child’s safety.
Also, given that the Mountain is Joannalookalike’s sworn guard I have no doubt that Oberyn and Doran planned to have Oberyn marry the Reader to lure Gregor to Dorne so that they could finally get revenge for Elia. I mean of course Tywin and Cersei would send the Mountain to Dorne with the Reader to ensure their safety and to report back to them about everything going on there and how their Joanna!lookalike is being treated. The Martells may have also thought that Tywin would be inclined to come down to Dorne too, to make a visit and check things there for his beloved Joanna!lookalike.

When making marriage betrothals between houses of different regions, do you think customs and cultural differences are taken into account when arranging these marriages?
Catelyn farred well in Winterfell even though she follows the faith of the seven, was ever a discussion on what faith the children would be raised in?
If Joanna and the Princess of Dorne have betrothed their children, how the arrangement would be handled? Do you think young Elia and Cersei would be sent to live in Dorne and Casterlly Rock respectively to get them prepared for their marriages? Like, when Rhaelle Targaryen and Myrcella were sent to Dorne and Storms End when they were betrothed (for different reasons within the story, but you get the point).
Generally speaking, I’d expect that brides (and this is a patriarchal society, so we’re probably mostly talking about brides) would be expected either to follow the faith of their respective lord husbands and/or to raise their children in the faiths of those respective husbands. It’s worth noting, after all, that there appears to have been no sept at Winterfell prior to Ned building one for Catelyn, despite Starks historically marrying Seven worshipers (more on that in a moment); indeed, I’ve even wondered whether part of the argument against the succession of Sansa and Serena Stark might have been that their mother Jeyne Manderly supposedly raised them to be no-good very-bad Seven worshipers. Recall, too, the horror of young Daella Targaryen, who, learning that she would be expected to say her vows before a weirwood, exclaimed in fear that she would “go to hell” because “they don’t believe in the gods” (emphasis in original). Likewise, Gyldayn reports that courtiers and onlookers distrusted Larra Rogare in part specifically because she “insisted upon keeping her own gods” and “would have no part in the worship of the Seven, nor the old gods of the northmen”; rumors even asserted that while her son Aegon was “anointed with the seven oils” following his birth, Larra “meant to have him blessed by her own gods as well”, adding to the distrust which Larra faced at the court of King’s Landing.
Now, is this true in every single Westerosi marriage? Of course not. As I mentioned, Ned had the sept at Winterfell built specifically for Catelyn, and while virtually all of her children have shown at least some level of reverence toward the old gods, the Starks still acknowledged the potential for worshiping the Seven. Sansa herself admitted at the outset of ACOK that she had historically favored her mother’s gods, and Ned had presented the office of High Septon as one of Bran’s career options when talking to Arya about her brother. On a larger scale, the Andal Invasion featured any number of marriages between Andals and First Men, performed almost literally hand in hand with the conversion of much of Westeros’ population (continental and south of the Neck, anyway) to the Faith of the Seven the Andals had brought to Westeros. Similarly, when Harmund II Hoare wed Lelia Lannister, the king himself promoted a sort of syncretism between the Faith and the religion of the Drowned God, while their son Harmund was raised to be a Faith worshiper.
As for the logistics of the marriage arrangements imagined by Joanna Lannister and/or the Unnamed Princess of Dorne, it’s very difficult to say. Certainly Oberyn believed that “there was an empty cabin on our ship, a very nice cabin … [a]s if it were intended that we take someone back to Sunspear”, but we don’t know that, even if Tywin had agreed to such a match (and he was never going to, of course), he would have assented to Cersei and/or Jaime sailing back to Dorne with the Unnamed Princess. Nor is it a requirement that a Westerosi bride live with the family into which she is marrying for any amount of time, much less a substantial amount of time, prior to her marriage. Catelyn was betrothed at 12 to Brandon Stark, but had apparently never visited Winterfell before she went to live there (now as the wife of Ned) at the end of Robert’s Rebellion; Lyanna, who had “long been betrothed”, in Yandel’s words, to Robert Baratheon by the outset of Robert's Rebellion, was similarly still living at Winterfell immediately prior to that planned marriage. While it can certainly be politically advantageous to have a bride do so - Rhaelle and Myrcella, as mentioned, representing not just their betrothals but pseudo-hostage-style commitments on the part of the Iron Throne to assuage the wrath of the Baratheons and Martells, respectively - this arrangement is far from standard or expected in all Westerosi marriages.
