Second take: Needful Things (dir. Fraser C. Heston, 1993)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A mildly entertaining adaptation of King's second-tier novel stars always-solid Sydow, Harris, and Bedelia, who's effervescent in a role that somehow mirrors Annette O'Toole's phenomenal take on Beverly Marsh in the superior TV version of It. Beverly is among the most important literary characters of my childhood, and so are both actresses. Bedelia's two great roles were in Violets Are Blue... and Speechless, none of which became successful enough to launch her film career; she was probably closest to it after playing a boring role of Bruce Willis's wife in the Die Hard series did. Her role, as well as Plummer's signature coy-turning-slightly-psychotic character, is the highlight of this film. The plot is simple: Sydow, who incarnates the evil typical of King's roles (an energy vampire, just like Colin Robinson!), comes to a town (again, typical of King's plot settings) and turns its inhabitants against each other. But eventually they overcome! The production value could be higher though: particularly the score and the sepia, slo-mo effect in phantasy scenes are tacky. I like the pacing though: the film is long and doesn't hurry.

my coworker is convinced i'm cooler than i am i think bc if i reference something she hasn't heard of she's like "oh i must be too old" and i'm like. no don't worry this is actively niche. i do not expect anyone to have heard of this band / book / thing unless they are also into the exact same stuff as me. it has absolutely nothing to do with your age because most other mid-late 20s people would have had the exact same reaction
she and my boss actually have pretty similar taste in music and i'm just there with my ridiculously eclectic playlists like "youse have probably heard of at least five of these but the rest i can't help you with i'm sorry"
and the thing is that this then loops around to people thinking i'm INTENTIONALLY obscure either bc they think i'm pretentious and trying too hard or because they think i'm Actually Cool. neither of these things is true. what happened is that i met a few random musicians at events / saw them busking / knew a guy who knew a guy in a band, etc, and then from THOSE small local bands i followed a 10-year chain of spotify recommendations (or tuneglue back in the day when spotify didn't recommend stuff as actively so you had to seek it out), and now my playlists are 50%* made up of bands who released one album c. 2012 and never anything else
and because i used to be a musician and was friends with musicians and they were friends with other musicians, i knew a lot of guys who knew a guy, you know? so that gets you into the listening pool of bands who have like 50 listeners and rehearse in their mum's garage and that takes you down even obscurer tracks whether you wanted to or not
(*the other 50% is pretty much just my chemical romance at this point but that's fine. they're my go-to for "oh but you'll have heard of this one")

The Unaired Two-Page Conversation
I think we're past the point of possible spoilers, so as promised: the 2pg book conversation that was cut for time (and realism). Originally, I was experimenting with "unsent" books as part of the conversations, but I thought it would ultimately be too confusing and opted not to use that, so anything you see with a strikethrough is an "unsent" book.

For the ask game: 🥝
Q: Who are your literary influences, and have they shaped your own writing?
---
I deeply love space opera, but I care more about the ship’s crew than its blueprints. My early reading absolutely shaped those preferences.
As a second generation nerd, I grew up consuming everything I could from the sci fi section of used bookstores. (My local library only had 30 science fiction books, and they wouldn’t let me have any of them because they weren’t in the kids section.) I mostly read whatever my mom picked out for herself, but I’d get to pick a few books for us both every trip.
In my early years, that meant a whole lot of paperbacks that were older than I was. Newer books went fast and cost more, so I brought home a lot of well worn old 1970’s titles from Octavia Butler, C.J. Cherryh, Frank Herbert, Arthur C Clark, Robert Heinlein, Jack Chalker, and John Varley.
None of it was remotely age appropriate, and I became a better adult for it. 70’s sci fi was all about pushing boundaries and breaking social taboos. Being a dumb kid, I thought gender and sexual fluidity and what we now call transhumanism was normal. ‘Turn your body into whatever feels right’ was a big theme of a lot of those books. Sometimes that meant changing gender. Other times it meant becoming a centaur or a space ship. All were presented as equally valid, and kinda no big deal. As a less dumb adult, I’m now grateful I imprinted on the ideas in my old paperbacks instead of the ideas of the adults around me.
Once I had access to a better library and the occasional indulgence of new books, my biggest literary hero became Terry Pratchett. The man was funny as hell while also having great social commentary. He wasn’t afraid to let his characters and attitudes evolve over time as he himself became more socially conscious. Most of all, he’s infinitely re-readable. You can’t get a better bang for your book buying buck than Terry Pratchett, because you will find new wonders on every re-read.*
In addition to Pratchett, as a young writer I paid a lot of attention to the writing styles of  Connie Willis, Lois McMaster Bujold, John Scalzi, and Bill Bryson. None of their works ended up being recycled at the used book store. The goal wasn’t to write like them, so much as to understand why I found them such page turners. (I bet if I went back and re-read those books now I’d have very different ideas about why they’re page turners.)
These days I read a lot more female authors than male. Martha Wells, Becky Chambers, and Cathrynne M. Valente feature heavily in my recent Libby history. I’m no longer actively reading to study people’s style, but if you marinate your brain in enough of someone’s work, some of it will soak in.
*Like all Americans who discover Terry Pratchett, I went through an unfortunate footnotes phase. We get over it.**
** Mostly.
