Frodsham Street Public Toilets, Chester

For my first blog post on this site, I decided to set the overall tone of the type of strange, unsettling and intriguing topics I will cover from this weird and wonderful universe we live in.

So, what's the best place to start? The bathroom, of course!

The Frodsham Street toilets in Chester, England are reported to be haunted by an apparition, greatly regarded as being Chester's most disturbing ghostly resident.

Going by 'Tom', a name that the living residents of the area have given him, as no one seems to know his true identity. He his described to be a pale look to his character, but very visually striking eyes, which most witnesses state to look 'sparkling and very alive'.

It is believed Tom died in the 1950's or 1960's by means of suicide in or around the general vicinity of the toilets. It is claimed that Tom can sometimes be observed with blood pouring from his wrists which have been slit open, or holding a razor blade.

He has been noted to appear in the corner of the men's bathroom, staring at those who are attempting to use the urinals.

Sightings have been said to have increased since 2011 after the bathrooms had been renovated. Tom does not seem to be pleased with the change, and frankly, nor would I if I were him.

Slept very well last night for the bed and room were comfortable and I had taken seven glasses of wine which helped me to sleep in spite of the thought of Pi [Mariana] I mused but for a short while I was unhappy said I the last time I was here I cannot be worse now this delicacy of Pi’s about delta [Charles] I cannot forget perhaps I think more of it than it deserves perhaps I am too fond of her - I did not lie long awake this morning -

My aunt’s bowels unwell in the night - breakfast at 10 - ‘twas after 11 before we got out - then went to the cathedral - saw it thoroughly - went up the stairs (from the cloisters) to where the sleeping apartments used to be - now a leaded roof - the superincumbent remains removed a few years ago - the cathedral has undergone considerable external repairs lately, and is very neatly kept within - warmed by steam - copper piping - and, as usual, difficult to keep air-tight - the dean chapter poor - the see only with about £2000 a year - vrey handsome chapter-room - it would be an excellent model for a gothic hall - in it a small fragment of the tomb of Hugh Lupus, and a stone with an old Roman inscription about the XXth legion - From the cathedral walked straight up the street observed the town-hall - turned into abbey square went into the deanery, or (I think) it was the palace garden - mounted the walls at the North gate, and walked along them past the race-course to the farther extremity of the castle - then turned back, went into the castle yard examined the beautiful Doric propyleum, if one may so call it, which forms the grand entrance - It is beautiful and does great credit to the architect Mr Harrison of Chester - erected a few years ago, perhaps 10 - Double colonnade of 4 fluted Doric columns - plain architrave - 3 triglyphs in a group with 6 guttae underneath -

Did not get off from Chester till 1 35/60, ad then by mistake went 3/4 mile on the Northwich road - and we were 1/4 hour before we got right, and set off out of Frodsham street M- said much of the beauty of the drive to Frodsham - we wondered what she meant till after the first 3 or 4 miles (10 miles from Chester to Frodsham) but the last 6 miles where the water (the Mersey) strewed with shipping came in view were certainly picutresque, as my aunt observed, very beautiful for England the break-off too of the Cheshire mountains has very good effect - several villages before Frodsham - Frodsham a long steep street - wide and pretty good - may be called a good country town - did not see the church -

The country rich and beautiful enough from Frodsham here, Warrington, where we arrived at 5 1/4 having been just 3 40/60 hours from leaving Chester - Boulder stone pave all the way with the exception of perhaps a few hundreds of yards at intervals during the 19 1/2 miles - most ratling disagreeable road to travel upon - good of its kind, and as even as such pavement can be; but the din of wheels upon it is very tiresome - Stopt here at the Nag’s head Inn evidently the best in the town, but very busy and bustling - ‘tis now 6 10/60, not an hour since we arrive, and 8 coaches have changed horses or stopt at the door during this time - surely 5 or 6 of them have changed horses -

Manchester 12 p.m. - I had scarcely written the above at Warrington when it struck me we ought to have something to eat - I had utterly forgot it before - Ordered coffee, and my aunt and I strolled down the street to make out the road to Manchester returned in 20 minutes hurried over our coffee and off from Warrington at 5 - the street all about the Nag’s head was and had been since our arrival full of people - apparently to watch the coaches - 1 or 2 new ones within the last few days or weeks - on inquiry found 14 coaches were daily horsed at this Inn - I think in the space of the first 2 miles from Warrington we passed more than a hundred carts coming towards Manchester - It did not seem that we could have had at any rate much prospect from the road - the country flat, and hedges rather high - yet what we did see, looked rich, and well - Very handsome approach to Manchester as far as the light permitted us to judge - at least half the 18 miles from Warrington her Bowlderstone pavement -

Out of the gig in our sitting room here in 2 40/60 hour - that is arrived at 9 40/60 - the house full - obliged to be in the bar-parlour and I to sleep aloft, a mile from my aunt - Observed them cutting oats between Chester and Frodsham we saw shocks of corn at Llangollen - a great deal of hay to get, and much by the way-side smelt of being spoilt - Came upstairs at 10 25/60 - Dawdling over my accounts etc - Very fine Day - but not much sun, and coolish and pleasant travelling -

Smith Wigglesworth fut sans doute l’un des hommes les plus oints de Dieu qui ait vécu à une époque récente. Il fut connu sous le nom d’Apôtre de la Foi, et si quelqu’un méritait d’être décrit comme étant "rempli de foi et du Saint-Esprit", c’était bien lui.

Il vécut et marcha continuellement dans le présence de Dieu. Et les miracles qui accompagnaient son ministère étaient du genre de ceux que l’on a vus rarement depuis les jours des apôtres. Des gens nés aveugles et sourds, des estropiés - tordus et déformés par la maladie, d’autres au seuil de la mort rongés par le cancer ou toutes sortes de maladie- tous furent guéris par la puissance formidable de Dieu. Même des morts furent ressuscités.

Né en 1859 dans la pauvreté, Smith Wigglesworth fut converti par les Méthodistes à l’âge de huit ans. Dès cette époque, il désirait ardemment Dieu et avait la passion des âmes. Il était dans le chœur de l’église Épiscopale locale. "Quand la plupart des garçons dans le chœur avaient douze ans, ils durent recevoir la confirmation par l’évêque. Je n’avais pas douze ans, mais entre neuf et dix ans, quand l’évêque mit ses mains sur moi. Je me rappelle que lorsqu’il m’imposa les mains, j’eus une expérience semblable à celle que j’allais avoir quarante années plus tard quand je fus baptisé du Saint-Esprit. Mon corps entier fut rempli de la conscience de la présence de Dieu, une conscience qui resta en moi pendant des jours. Après la cérémonie de confirmation, tous les autres garçons juraient et se disputaient et je me suis demandé ce qui avait fait la différence entre eux et moi." (Stanley Frodsham, Smith Wigglesworth, Apôtre de la Foi, page 13 - la plupart des citations suivantes sont aussi extraites de cet excellent livre).

Plus tard, Wigglesworth fut entièrement immergé dans l’eau par les Baptistes. Mais veuillez noter que toutes ses premières années de ministère et sa recherche de Dieu sont venues bien avant le réveil d’ ’Azusa Street’ et le premier mouvement Pentecôtiste. Smith avait une faim de Dieu et il expérimenta beaucoup de percées dans de nouveaux niveaux d’onction bien avant même qu’il eut expérimenté le Baptême du Saint-Esprit et parlé en langues. Il était déjà renommé pour son ministère de guérison et avait vu Dieu agir puissamment, bien avant même que l’on parle de la nouvelle expérience de la Pentecôte. À la différence de nous aujourd’hui, qui commençons essentiellement par le Baptême dans l’Esprit comme notre première réelle onction, pour Smith, c’était le point culminant de longues années de recherche et de faim de Dieu, et ainsi c’était beaucoup plus proche d’un réel "revêtement de puissance d’en-haut" du Nouveau Testament.

Smith Wigglesworth déclara : "J’ai eu l’enseignement biblique de base parmi les Frères du Plymouth. J’ai marché au pas sous le sang et la bannière de feu de l’Armée du Salut, apprenant à gagner des âmes en plein air. J’ai reçu la deuxième bénédiction de sanctification et un cœur purifié dans l’enseignement de Reader Harris et la Ligue Pentecôtiste. J’ai réclamé le don de l’Esprit Saint par la foi en attendant dix jours devant le seigneur. Mais c’est à Sunderland-, en 1907, que je me suis mis à genoux devant Dieu et ai expérimenté Actes 2:4 ...". Il décrivit cette expérience comme suit : " Elle [Madame Boddy, la femme d’un ministre] a mis ses mains sur moi et a ensuite dû sortir de la pièce. Le feu est tombé. Cela a été un temps merveilleux alors que j’étais là seul avec Dieu. Il m’a baigné dans la puissance. J’ai eu la conscience d’être purifié par le sang précieux et je me suis écrié : ’Propre ! Propre ! Propre ! ’ J’ai été rempli de la joie de la conscience de la purification. J’ai reçu une vision dans laquelle j’ai vu le seigneur Jésus-Christ. J’ai contemplé la croix vide et je L’ai vu glorifié à la droite de Dieu le Père. Je ne pouvais plus parler en anglais, mais j’ai commencé à Le louer dans d’autres langues selon que l’Esprit de Dieu m’inspirait les mots. J’ai su alors, bien que j’aie reçu des onctions précédemment, que maintenant, enfin, j’avais reçu le réel Baptême dans le Saint-Esprit comme ils l’ont reçu le jour de la Pentecôte. ".

Après cette expérience, rien ne pouvait arrêter Smith Wigglesworth. Il était une flamme pour Dieu et le feu tombait partout où il allait. Il dit : "Je crois que les ministres de Dieu doivent être les flammes de feu. Rien de moins que des flammes. Rien de moins que des instruments puissants, avec des messages ardents, avec des cœurs pleins d’amour. Ils doivent avoir une PROFONDEUR DE CONSÉCRATION, dans laquelle Dieu a pris la pleine charge du corps et il existe seulement dans le but de manifester la Gloire de Dieu. Un Baptême dans la mort dans laquelle la personne est purifiée et stimulée..." Il posséda certainement une audace, une hardiesse dont l’équivalent a rarement été vu dans la Chrétienté des temps modernes. Ce n’était pas rare pour lui d’annoncer à ses réunions : "Chaque sermon que Christ a prêché était introduit par un miracle spécifique. Nous allons suivre Son exemple. La première personne dans ce grand auditoire qui se lèvera, quelle que soit sa maladie, je prierai pour cette dernière et Dieu le ou la délivrera." Et la première personne à se lever, même si c’était l’estropié le plus déformé, était guérie !

A une autre occasion typique, un homme s’avança pour la prière à cause d’une douleur à l’estomac et, en commandant à la douleur de partir, Wigglesworth donna un coup de poing à l’homme dans l’estomac si fort qu’il fut envoyé au milieu de la pièce (complètement guéri) ! Ce genre de choses arriva plus d’une fois. Wigglesworth croyait qu’il fallait COMMANDER au malade d’être guéri au nom de Jésus. Sa foi était une foi sainte et agressive. C’était un homme "violent", prenant position contre le diable par la force. Et pourtant c’était aussi un homme de grande compassion -, ainsi que de grande autorité. Le diable le savait certainement quand Smith Wigglesworth arriva en ville !

Un certain nombre de gens furent aussi littéralement ressuscités des morts sous le ministère de Smith. Voici son propre compte-rendu d’une de ces occasions : "Mon ami a dit : ’Elle est morte.’ Il était effrayé. Je n’ai jamais vu un homme aussi effrayé dans ma vie. ’Que ferai-je ?’ a-t-il demandé. Il se peut que vous pensiez que ce que j’ai fait était absurde, mais je me suis étendu sur le lit et l’en ai retirée. Je l’ai portée à travers la chambre, l’ai mise debout contre le mur en la tenant, alors qu’elle était absolument morte. J’ai examiné son visage et j’ai dit : ’ Au nom de Jésus je chasse cette mort. ’ Du haut de sa tête jusqu’à ses pieds, son corps tout entier a commencé à trembler. ’ Au nom de Jésus, je commande que vous marchiez, ’ ai-je dit. J’ai répété : ’ Au nom de Jésus, au nom de Jésus, marchez ! ’ Et elle a marché." (Page 59). Non seulement cette femme a t-elle été ressuscitée des morts, mais elle a été immédiatement guérie d’une maladie épouvantable aussi. Elle a commencé à témoigner aux gens de son expérience de mort et de sa restauration. Il a été enregistré que Smith Wigglesworth a ressuscité des morts 23 personnes en tout, au cours des années de son ministère.

Une fois, alors que Smith attendait à un arrêt d’autobus, une femme avait des difficultés à obtenir de son petit chien, qui la suivait, qu’il aille à la maison. D’abord elle essaya de le flagorner et de lui demander gentiment de rentrer à la maison. Mais après avoir essayé cela en vain, la femme tapa soudainement des pieds et dit sévèrement : Rentre à la maison immédiatement ! ’ Le chien partit immédiatement à la maison, en prenant les jambes à son cou. ’C’est ainsi que vous devez traiter le diable ’, dit Wigglesworth, assez fort pour que tous ceux qui attendaient à l’arrêt d’autobus pussent entendre. Et c’était son attitude envers le diable, à chaque moment de chaque jour nouveau. Il voyagea littéralement à travers le monde entier dans les années 1920 et 1930 et des milliers furent sauvés et guéris partout où il allait. Souvent il arrivait dans un endroit presqu’inconnu sans s’être annoncé, mais en quelques jours il y avait des milliers qui se pressaient pour l’entendre, la puissance de Dieu qui se manifestait à ses réunions était si forte. Dieu était vraiment glorifié partout il allait.

C’était un homme qui marcha et vécut dans la présence même de Dieu. Et pourtant, par beaucoup d’aspects, c’était un homme très naturel, terre-à-terre. Et il n’avait pas peur non plus de déclarer des réprimandes sévères et imponctues. Son but était d’être dans une communion constante et intacte avec le Père. Il avait passé des heures et des jours à chercher ardemment Dieu dans ses premières années, mais plus tard, "Bien que sa vie ait été une combinaison de prière incessante et de louange, et chacun de ses mots et son œuvre, un acte d’adoration, il ne lui fut pas donné d’être dans des périodes prolongées de jeûne et prière." (Page 122). Au lieu de cela, il avait appris le secret d’être dans la communion continue et intime avec Dieu (parfois en se réfugiant calmement en lui-même à cette fin), même quand il se trouvait noyé parmi une foule de gens. Il marchait par la foi et était "dans l’Esprit" à tout moment. Ce fut le secret essentiel de son succès. Il dit : "Il y a deux aspects à ce Baptême : le premier est que vous possédez l’Esprit ; le deuxième est que l’Esprit vous possède." (Voir ’The Life of Smith Wigglesworth’ (la Vie de Smith Wigglesworth) par Jack Hywel-Davies). Il avait évalué le coût et tout était à Dieu. C’était un homme qui comprit vraiment l’AUTORITÉ DANS LA PIETE et Y MARCHA par la foi. Il dit : " ’Être rempli de l’Esprit,’ c’est-à-dire, être FOURRÉ de l’Esprit, si rempli qu’il ne restera aucune place pour autre chose." Ce fut de cette façon qu’il vécut. Plein d’audace, plein de hardiesse, "rempli de foi et du Saint-Esprit."

A une occasion, il se rappela : "Je voyageais à Cardiff au Sud du Pays de galles. J’avais passé beaucoup de temps dans la prière durant le voyage. Le compartiment était rempli de gens que je savais non sauvés, mais comme il y avait tant de discussions et de plaisanteries, je ne pus pas placer un seul mot pour mon Maître. Comme le train s’approchait de la station, je pensai que je me laverais les mains ... et comme je retournais dans le compartiment, un homme bondit et dit : ’Monsieur, vous me convainquez de péché’ et il se jeta à genoux séance tenante. Bientôt dans le compartiment entier, les gens s’écrièrent de la même façon. Ils dirent :’Qui êtes-vous ? Qu’est-ce que vous êtes ? Vous nous convainquez tous de péché ’..." (Stanley Frodsham, ’Smith Wigglesworth - Apôtre de la Foi ’, page 80). Cet épisode me rappelle beaucoup un autre évangéliste plein d’audace, direct et oint - Charles G. Finney, qui s’était trouvé dans une occasion où, après un puissant Baptême du Saint-Esprit quelques années plus tôt, même des commentaires qu’il fit au passage, percèrent les gens au cœur de la conviction de péché. Il allait devenir un des plus grands Revivalistes de tous les temps (il mourut en 1875).

Smith Wigglesworth insistait grandement sur la pureté et la sainteté, comme tous les vrais Revivalistes. Il disait : "Vous devez chaque jour élever le niveau. Vous devez renoncer à vous-mêmes pour faire des progrès avec Dieu. Vous devez refuser toute chose qui n’est pas pure et sainte. Dieu vous veut purs de cœur. Il veut que vous ayez un désir intense de sainteté... Deux choses vous feront sauter dans les promesses de Dieu aujourd’hui. L’une est la pureté et l’autre est la FOI, qui est embrasée de plus en plus PAR LA PURETÉ.". Cette déclaration contient ce qui est probablement la clé du succès remarquable de Smith Wigglesworth en Dieu. Et c’est évidemment une clé dont il vaut bien la peine de se souvenir pour nous-mêmes aussi. Un autre point à se rappeler consiste en ce que Smith était très conscient des dangers de l’argent et se gardait soigneusement de la possibilité de l’avidité qui pouvait pénétrer dans son cœur. Il fut vraiment au-dessus de tout reproche dans ce domaine également.

C’est ma conviction que Smith Wigglesworth a été une sorte "de signe avant-coureur" direct du genre de ministères qui sont sur le point de surgir à notre époque. Je crois que les ministères apostoliques à venir, qui seront les porteurs du vrai réveil des derniers temps, combineront la foi audacieuse, accompliront les miracles de Smith Wigglesworth avec la prédication de Charles Finney produisant de profondes convictions de péché. Et ils agiront sous une puissante onction qui combinera le meilleur de ces deux types de ministères. Combien glorieux ces jours seront ! Smith Wigglesworth lui-même mourut en 1946 à l’âge très avancé de 87 ans, restant une flamme de Dieu jusqu’à la fin. Qu’il soit un exemple pour nous tous.

Evidence of ancient rainforests found in Antarctica (CNN) When dinosaurs roamed the Earth, the planet was much warmer, including Antarctica at the South Pole. But in a surprising twist, researchers have discovered evidence that Antarctica also supported a swampy rainforest at the time, according to a new study. Researchers captured a slice of the seafloor using a drill rig aboard a polar research vessel. CT scans of the sediment core revealed pristine samples of forest soil, pollen, spores and even root systems so well preserved that they could identify cell structures. And the Antarctic summer temperature was likely around 66 degrees Fahrenheit. They estimate rainfall reached about 97 inches per year--about the same as Wales today.

A Major Medical Staffing Company Just Slashed Benefits for Doctors and Nurses Fighting Coronavirus (ProPublica) Emergency room doctors and nurses many of whom are dealing with an onslaught of coronavirus patients and shortages of protective equipment--are now finding out that their compensation is getting cut. Most ER providers in the U.S. work for staffing companies that have contracts with hospitals. Those staffing companies are losing revenue as hospitals postpone elective procedures and non-coronavirus patients avoid emergency rooms. Health insurers are processing claims more slowly as they adapt to a remote workforce. “Despite the risks our providers are facing, and the great work being done by our teams, the economic challenges brought forth by COVID-19 have not spared our industry,” Steve Holtzclaw, the CEO of Alteon Health, one of the largest staffing companies, wrote in a memo to employees on Monday. The memo announced that the company would be reducing hours for clinicians, cutting pay for administrative employees by 20%, and suspending 401(k) matches, bonuses and paid time off. “It’s completely demoralizing,” said an Alteon clinician who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “At this time, of all times, we’re putting ourselves at risk but also putting our families at risk.”

Navy to remove 2,700 sailors from aircraft carrier struggling with coronavirus in Guam (Washington Post) The Navy plans to remove about 2,700 sailors from an aircraft carrier in Guam afflicted by the coronavirus, senior Navy officials said Wednesday, as government officials on the island worked to secure hotel rooms for many of them. The move comes after a letter written by the USS Theodore Roosevelt’s captain, circulated in the news media, drew attention to the service’s response to the situation. The commanding officer, Capt. Brett Crozier, wrote that “decisive action is required,” “sailors do not need to die” and that if the Navy didn’t act, it was “failing to properly to take care of our most trusted asset--our sailors.” The situation on the Roosevelt is the Defense Department’s single-largest known outbreak of Covid-19, crippling one of the Pentagon’s most significant strategic weapons.

Nature reclaiming its turf (Foreign Policy) In Llandudno, Wales, a herd of wild goats has benefited from the absence of people on the streets of the town and migrated from their usual territory in the hills above to graze in Llandudno’s parks, churchyards, and garden hedges. Andrew Stuart, the journalist who first spotted the herd, summed up the new reality, “Llandudno is run by goats.”

European divisions (Daily Telegraph) Italian politicians took out a full-page advertisement in one of Germany’s most prestigious newspapers on Tuesday as they urged parsimonious northern Europe to do more to help the south through the coronavirus crisis, amid an increasingly bitter rift within the EU. MPs and mayors from across the Italian political spectrum implored Germany for help and lashed out at the Netherlands in the pages of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Germany’s leading conservative daily. They urged Berlin to drop its opposition to a proposed EU scheme to issue so-called “coronabonds” to raise funds to fight the crisis. They accused the Netherlands, which has led opposition to the scheme, of operating as a tax haven and diverting revenue from other member states. “Dear German friends, with the coronavirus the shared history of the Western world has once again taken centre stage,” they wrote. “Today the EU does not have the means to respond to the crisis in a united front. If it does not prove that it exists, it will cease to exist.”

Taliban prepares for prisoner exchanges (Foreign Policy) After a long process filled with false starts and violence, the prisoner exchange so vital to peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban is set to begin. A three-member team arrived in Kabul yesterday to “help the process of the prisoners’ release” according to a Taliban spokesman. “They are here now and we will begin our discussion; the prisoner release might go ahead in a few days if everything goes as planned,” a senior Afghan government official told Reuters.

China’s Coronavirus Numbers (Foreign Policy) A classified U.S. intelligence report has found that China’s coronavirus figures are false: that it underreported the number of confirmed cases and deaths. It is likely that Beijing is deliberately underreporting the death toll in Wuhan, where the outbreak began, and the total number of cases across the country in February. Bad numbers in China are always underreported, especially when the national image is at stake, and China is now keen to play up its victory against the virus in contrast with the West’s failures. But the Chines leadership are also struggling to figure out exactly what’s going within the vast country. Chinese officials have been warned not to “hide cases for the sake of reporting zero.” But the leadership is also demanding close to zero new domestic cases. A series of purges before the pandemic has left officials on edge, and any local authorities unlucky enough to have an outbreak in their territory could be in grave political danger. Their response may be to conceal a local outbreak from the high-level authorities while using strict measures to contain it: reporting zero new cases while still quarantining neighborhoods or towns.

China’s foreign visa ban (Foreign Policy) China barred all foreign nationals, regardless of visa status, from entering the country last week. Effectively, this means everyone: Even if you are married to a Chinese citizen, there is no route to permanent residency, let alone citizenship, except for a tiny number of people. Even after the lockdown ends, the move is likely to be used for a thorough revision of visas. Many of the 10-year tourist visas freely issued to U.S. citizens in better times could be canceled, and new work visas will likely be harder to obtain. The wave of anti-foreigner sentiment spreading through the country continues, especially in Beijing, with more businesses banning foreigners.
