La Belle Fleur Sauvage (1989)
"I'll live yet to see him Regret the dark hour When he won, then neglected, The frail wildwood flower" - "Wildwood Flower," American folk song written by Maud Irving, best known as performed by Mother Maybelle Carter. [Epigraph from La Belle Fleur Sauvage] The fifth Strange Trails story is one of George Ranger Jonhson's most plain-cut romance novels. As he mentioned after the publication of Lullaby, he’d been wanting to write more “of tender things.”The story this time around comes to the patrons of George's Place from Remy Fusil, the Cajun Cowboy - a character who appears fairly little in the whole rest of GRJ's oeuvre, unless you believe certain theories of second identities (you'd be hard-pressed to find a character who doesn't have those!)
In retrospect, despite his seat in the hallowed pantheon of Strange Trails narrators, alongside such heavy-hitters as Frankie Lou and Buck Vernon, Fusil was a means to an end - that end being the introduction of Lee Green, who would play a major role in the whole rest of Johnson's works, develop from the sweet young flower of the Michigan woods she's portrayed as here, to, in the end of ends, that half-real eye-of-the-hurricane phantom haunting moonlit Mt. Monroe.
But we're getting two series ahead of ourselves. For now, in this book, GRJ deftly weaves together Remy and Lee's hesitant and, perhaps, a touch unreliably narrated romance, with the timeless legend of an unobtainable alpine flower - a legend that Remy swears is Cajun, but in other books we're told it might be Basque, or American folk. In other words, it's a story that comes from everywhere, and everyone. Maybe that's why this old tale's themes of obsessive pursuit ring through almost every page that GRJ ever set his pen to. Behind the kisses in the moonlight, there are always mountains unclimbable, withering flowers picked for ephemeral beauty once held, fools for love lying in the drifting snow, in the wind, lost in time and space, who'd give it all to pluck that fleur.
Oh yes, and we end with another cliffhanger. As Remy leans back in George's Place, having finished his tale of romance, he lights up a cigarette and a Bob Dylan tune comes on the jukebox. No one, he says, could ever challenge that his love was the purest. And then, to a galloping 4/4 beat, he hears footsteps approaching.
Keep following this blog for more insight into Johnson's work through the years.
May you live until you die!

When Strange Trails is the only LH album some ppl talk about bc it’s got The Night We Met and all I want is more ppl to talk to about the Vide Noir movie and the whole Lonesome Dreams/GRJ plotline and how George’s bar might be run by GRJ himself and probably none of the characters in the Lonesome Dreams stories are in the Strange Trails/Vide Noir timeline and are actually characters in all of GRJ’s books that some of the characters in ST/VN have probably read and how Lonesome Dreams might be from Buck Vernon’s pov during his trip to the east where he’s reading all of the GRJ novels and then the Strange Trails timeline begins right after he gets back and then he and Johnnie Redmayne had a bit of a ✨thing✨ during Dead Man’s Hand despite Buck being simultaneously trying to romance Lily before having some kind of weird hallucination situation with The Night We Met because that song is very clearly about him hallucinating someone (Lily? Leigh? Louisa? Whoever she is bc she’s mysterious) and then realizing that hallucination which actuallly connects to Never Ever in Vide Noir which is his possibly second hallucination of someone but anyway after Buck’s moment in the beginning of Strange Trails the plot shifts to the other Strange Trails characters until Vide Noir happens where Buck is now onto another girl, Leigh Green, who gets into weird drugs (Vide Noir, guys go watch Products of The Universe on YouTube) and runs away from Buck who gets a bit weird and goes on a crazy love quest and I don’t want to spoil anymore for ppl who want to discover the lore for themselves but THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE LOVE FOR THIS INSANE FICTIONAL UNIVERSE IN ALL THE LORD HURON MUSIC BC GOD DAMN IS IT AWESOME

So, been getting into the Lord Huron lore recently, and do you know any blogs that are heavily into it? Like, Lord Huron Lore blogs.
I don’t think there is any tbh. The fanbase on here is pretty small so while we got some Lord Huron specific blogs I haven’t seen anything for the lore by itself

no one asked for my theories about lord huron 5 but i’m gonna give them anyway :D i think the fact that they spent an entire month celebrating lonesome dreams’ 10 year anniversary along with the attention to detail re: blurring george ranger johnson’s face on his website for long lost PLUS this post
Tumblr media Tumblr media
which adds the tidbit about johnson’s radio show (compared to his website on the right) all points me towards believing a possible theme could be a follow up from lonesome dreams? but instead of the novels themselves it’s more of a focus on GRJ himself. especially if you’ve listened to their performance of the comedian; the comedian sounds like it’s written by someone who’s had stardom and lost it and (without spoiling it too much for those who don’t want to listen to it yet) the general vibe sounds like it could easily be from his point of view. we know so little about him other than his works, his brief appearance on AFWP as a guest on tubbs’ show, and his ownership of the broken bottle bar. which!!! is the bar that so much of long lost stems from!! tubbs discovering his first act (donny and midge) there and quentin king performing there and receiving the unfinished copy of setting sun (not to mention its appearances in AFWP and the twenty long years lyric video). also the bar is seen as derelict in episode 426, and that leaves so many questions!! did GRJ abandon it to pursue his writing? did he own it throughout his first novels only to abandon it when he reached stardom?
also a lot of people have theorized that because of the “your other life” music video cliffhanger of the Orbs™ and the Laser Gun™ we might see a future album consist of an extraterrestrial theme with a possible 80s vibe. and well. wouldn’t an album focused on GRJ’s radio show- which consists of his favorite songs (which very much could be from the 80s), unexplained phenomena, and questions of extraterrestrial life- fit that narrative?

‘It’s the relationship I knew I wanted’: Scrublands star on learning to commit
Luke Arnold is an actor and writer who is best known for playing Michael Hutchence in Never Tear Us Apart. The 39-year-old discusses the endearing nickname he called his little sister as a child, a silly but romantic Christmas gesture and what he is most proud of in his current relationship.
Tumblr media
“It’s interesting to reflect on the actresses I admired before I got into the acting industry who later became colleagues, like Heather Graham.”
My maternal great-great-grandmother thought her name was Jean, but when she was 70 she found her birth certificate, which said Jane. Her mother died when she was young, so I’m not sure what went wrong there, but she was still Jean to us all.
Some of my first memories are getting handwritten and recorded poems on cassettes from her. Looking at them recently, I can see the influence their form and patterns have had on my own writing.
When I was young, my maternal granny, Valerie, lived on a sailing boat with my step granddad. They also travelled around Australia on a motorbike. They were a great example of the freewheeling, bohemian lifestyle that was definitely passed down to me.
My parents, Nola and Colin, met while picking fruit. Mum is not the tallest lady and trained to become a jockey. It was her passion from a young age, but in the late 1970s she found the male-dominant culture of the racing industry too tough to realise her dream.
Mum is an enthusiastic and bubbly person. Before my younger sister, Ashley, and my brother, George, were born, I had her full attention for two years. It was great, as it meant that when I started school, I was on my way to reading and writing.
When I was just a baby myself, I used to call my sister “my little darling”, as we were so close. In the teen years we grew apart a bit, but since 2019 we’ve become close again. Ashley’s a web designer and is living the life of a digital nomad.
My first celebrity crush was Amy Jo Johnson, the actress who played the Pink Power Ranger on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
It’s interesting to reflect on the actresses I admired before I got into the acting industry who later became colleagues, like Heather Graham, star of Boogie Nights, which is one of my favourite films. When Heather enlisted me to act opposite her on her 2018 film Half Magic, it was a “pinch-me” moment. One minute I would be talking to her as a colleague, then the next I’d think, “You’re HEATHER GRAHAM!”
My first serious relationship was with Hayley at Sunshine Beach High School in Queensland. We bonded over acting and performing. It was nice to meet a girl after my teenage years in Sydney, where I’d worked as a clown, doing parties and magic, mostly around dudes.
While at drama school [WAAPA in Perth], I picked up a girlfriend from the airport dressed in wrapping paper. I’d asked her what she wanted for Christmas and she’d replied, “Just you.” I took that literally. It was a silly, ridiculous, romantic gesture. I’m glad camera phones weren’t a big thing back then.
In the 2022 NITV SBS series True Colours, Rarriwuy Hick and I both played detectives. Filming that was a huge education for me. My touchstones on the Northern Territory set were the women – Rurriway and Arrernte/Warlpiri woman Marie Ellis, with whom we consulted daily to follow cultural protocol.
It was nerve-racking to be the white fella who was ignorant of so many things. But the First Nations people had such generosity teaching me about that part of the country, and about the practices that impacted storylines, like men’s business, kinship and payback. There was overwhelming care for us outsiders coming in.
I’ve been with my current partner, Laura, for a year. We met while making a film 16 years ago and I was completely and madly infatuated with her. We were both young and at that time I was ill-equipped to handle such strong feelings.
We had a couple of false starts that left us both feeling tender, but we kept returning to the flame. Something I’m proud of is that we kept showing up, as it would have been easy to just turn it into a story of heartbreak and not deal with it.
We’ve always been great friends throughout it all. Laura is the person I want to call with good news, with a question, or if I’m anxious about something. It’s the relationship I knew I wanted, and I’m very grateful to be in it now.
Luke Arnold stars in Scrublands, premiering November 16 on Stan.

Hi! I’m so glad you’re here.
You can call me Marleigh! I don’t want to disclose my actual name because, y’know, identity safety something something.
About me:
I'm unhealthily obsessed with the Beatles
And the Monkees, though to a lesser extent
I have a cup of coffee in my hand almost constantly
Jesus is #1 in my life
George Harrison is a close second (Well, not THAT close, I suppose, but you get the point)
I'm a writer, which means that I procrastinate and look at memes instead of actually writing
I love all things history-related
I read books
Archery is the one sport at which I’m any good
I listen to all kinds of music (no genre is safe)
Sometimes I try to write poetry
My favorite fandoms are:
Star Wars
Percy Jackson (and all other Riordanverse)
Ranger's Apprentice
The Chronicles of Narnia
The Ascendance Series
The Green Ember
Harry Potter
I post about all of the above, with the addition of memes or other random things of interest. On Sundays, I take a break from Tumblr, so I probably won’t respond to mentions or messages until Monday. But feel free to mention or message me anyway, because I love having a bunch of notifications when I come back!
I try to keep this blog clean from inappropriate content. I personally don’t curse, but some of the users I reblog do, so some of my posts may include swearing. Hate is not welcome here, except for the Peter Johnson movies (iykyk).
That's about it! I hope you have a great day

On July 9th 1946 Ronald Belford “Bon” Scott was born in Forfar.
As a child he lived as a child in nearby Kirriemuir. In 1952 his parents, Charles and Isabelle Scott, emigrated to Australia, if you’re ever unsure of his credentials as a true Scot look at the older photos of him dressed in full regalia, he was a member of a pipe band growing up, or the pic with him in the kilt and the basket hilt sword, or go find  Fling Thing/Rocker by ACDC on Youtube, it’s a clincher.
It’s no secret that Bon had a pretty rough youth. The Scotland native dropped out of school at 15 and even spent nine months at the Riverbank Juvenile Institution relating to charges of giving a false name and address to the police, having escaped legal custody, having “unlawful carnal knowledge” and stealing twelve gallons of gasoline. He later tried to join the Australian Army, but when he was turned away for being “socially maladjusted,” Bon shifted his focus to music – working long hours by day as a postman, bartender and truck packer and playing in his first band The Spektors by night..
Before he was strutting his way from one end of the stage to the other, Bon set his sights on becoming a rock drummer. He played drums for his early band The Spektors and when his opportunity with AC/DC came up, Bon still really, really wanted to be their drummer. However, fate had something else in mind; his vocal abilities and magnetic stage presence so impressed brothers Angus and Malcolm Young that the thought of having Bon doing anything other than lead AC/DC would be sacrilege.
Before Bon joined AC/DC, his future bandmates had some doubts. He’d been in a serious motorcycle accident and according to late legend Vince Lovegrove, George Young of The Easybeats worried that only would Bon’s injuries keep him from performing, but that he was too old to join the band. Nevertheless, Vince sat down with Angus and Malcolm who insisted he bring Bon by a local club that night to watch AC/DC play; wildly impressed with their energy, he immediately wanted to join them but worried that they were a bit too young and inexperienced. Angus and Malcolm were quick to retort that Bon might be “too old to rock”, leading to a jam session later that night that resulted in Bon becoming AC/DC’s new lead singer.
By the time Bon joined AC/DC in 1974, he’d already spent a decade in and out of bands. He formed his very first band The Spektors in 1964 and took on the role of drummer and occasional lead singer and when Spektors merged with another local band a year later, they formed The Valentines, in which Scott was co-lead singer with Vince Lovegrove. He did a stint in prog rock band Fraternity – later known as Fang – and upon the band’s hiatus in 1973, Bon occupied his nights singing with the Mount Lofty Rangers.
When Bon died in 1980, his bandmates were left with the difficult task of deciding who – if anyone – should take his place. Lucky for them, Bon unknowingly handpicked his own successor a few years before in Georgie frontman Brian Johnson. He’d mentioned this dynamite singer his band Fraternity had toured with, one whose wildly impressive vocal style reminded him of his childhood idol Little Richard and after his death, the answer to AC/DC’s lead singer question was simple.
Though AC/DC was formed in Australia, it was Kirriemuir that Bon Scott called home for the first five years of his life before his family moved to Australia in 1952 and it’s where Bonfest, a weekend long celebration of Bon’s life and career, has happened every year for the last decade until the pandemic, but was held after that hiatus this year.

Fool For Love (1989)
The next day was hanging day, the sky was overcast and black Big Jim lay covered up, killed by a penknife in the back And Rosemary on the gallows, she didn't even blink The hanging judge was sober, he hadn't had a drink The only person on the scene missing was the Jack of Hearts — Bob Dylan, "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts"
Seems like the cover artist was a bit nostalgic for the Lonesome Dreams era with that art, eh? In fairness, so was GRJ; those of us who look into such things have noted that Fool For Love is probably the biggest throwback of the Strange Trails novels, and the most "western" of this more modern (well, at the very least, firmly twentieth-century-set, if a couple decades back) series. Not too surprising, then, that we get the most extravagant depiction of George's Place as a "western" bar, and Either Buck Vernon or Remy Fusil (more likely, given the etymology of his name) with a pistol that doesn't actually figure into the story.
Ironically, this is one of the few Strange Trails stories that isn't a throwback in some sense, in that it's not a story in flashback. No, this one takes place on the very night that all the previous novels have been told as stories, and it marks the point where the night really goes off the rails.
... Or maybe it doesn't, because maybe it's not connected to the canon at all. Right at the beginning of this one, Buck Vernon, our narrator once more, admits to the reader that "sometimes, I see things that others say they cain't. I don't think that makes 'em unreal, but may well be I'm watching like through the window in the dark at the bottom of a broken bottle, seeing my other lives." That's as close to a fourth wall break as you'll get directly from GRJ in any story, here disguised as a fifth or sixth wall break, shattering layers of reality beyond the simple biniverse of story-truth that we all pass through without thinking on when we pick up a musty paperback. This before he tells a whole story using names that weren't in the bar up until then, and a lover named Lily who sounds almost, but not quite, like lovely Lee, whose story was just told. Li-Lee? Objectively, before we really get going, we do know that Buck came out to spin some tunes for the crowd at George's, that the set's done now and he's sitting back having a few too many while Dylan plays on the jukebox - that very tune in the epigraph is the one described, and it's notable that in the story Buck narrates in real-time, names of characters come into play.
Tumblr media
The WBUB special based on this book didn't help with the character confusion either. Don't judge the book by the adaptation, obviously. That's always the rule.
A young fool (Buck himself, thinking he'll play the victorious Jack of Hearts in Dylan's tale?) psyches himself up and picks a fight with Big Jim (Remy Fusil?), lover of Lily. The World Enders, who are still hanging around, and the Tumbleweeds, who we're just meeting now but may be the descendants of Sri Tumbleweed's thugs from Time To Run, get caught up in things. The brawl spreads, chapter by chapter, to bring everyone in, even crashing into the Cambodian opium den behind George's which we only heard referenced in Love Like Ghosts. But things don't go well for our hopeless romantic Buck of Hearts. After a seeming escape from the chaos, Buck finds himself in a back alley where, well, spoilers, but there's a reason that the rest of the Strange Trails stories, especially Buck's, run evermore fantastically through that deep dark wooded valley between the ridges of death and life.
