Romy Schneider
Romy Schneider born Rosemarie Magdalena Albach; 23 September 1938 – 29 May 1982. Was a German-French actress. She is regarded as one of the greatest screen actresses of all time and became a cult figure due to her role as Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the hugely popular Sissi trilogy in the mid-1950s. She later reprised the role in a more mature version in Luchino Visconti's Ludwig (1973). She began her career in the German Heimatfilm genre in the early 1950s when she was 15. Schneider moved to France, where she made successful and critically acclaimed films with some of the most notable film directors of that era. Her performance in That Most Important Thing: Love is regarded as one of the greatest in the history of cinema.Coco Chanel called Romy “the ultimate incarnation of the ideal woman

Do you like The Sound of Music?
Tbh, I never watched it 🙊 but I saw bits and pieces of the German original. And well...that's a typical German Heimatfilm with lots of kitsch and smugness.

Romy Schneider (1938-1982).
German-French actress.
.
She was an Austrian-French film actress and voice actress. She started her career in the German Heimatfilm genre in the early 1950s when she was 15. From 1955 to 1957, she played the central character of Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the Austrian Sissi trilogy, and later reprised the role in a more mature version in Visconti's Ludwig. Schneider moved to France, where she made successful and critically acclaimed films with some of the most notable film directors of that era.
.
The popular Sissi series of movies about the Austro-Hungarian royal family brought the daughter of actor Wolf Albach-Retty and 1930s film star Magda Schneider popular recognition throughout the German-speaking world in the 1950s as Elizabeth of Austria. By 1962 when a condemned compilation of these films was released in the United States as Forever, My Love, her range had broadened to include critically admired performances in Boccaccio ’70 (1962) and Le Procès (1962; “The Trial”).
.
Schneider projected a vivacious, witty sexuality, and proved herself a natural and gifted comedienne.
.
She had a relationship with Alain Delon but later married Harry Meyen in 1966 with whom she had a son. In 1975, she married Daniel Biasini and had a daughter.
Romy was a woman with many insecurities and was very sensitive, but a lot of people admire her.
.
She died of a cardiac arrest, either due to heavy drinking (her son died in 1981 and she began to drink a lot) or to a kidney operation that had weakened her heart.
.
Famous movies:
La Piscine
Sissi
Le Vieux Fusil
The Trial
The Most Important Thing: Love
La Voleuse

Here some movies/tv shows where I am not sure if people outside the german speaking area know about them feturing christoph waltz:
Das jüngste Gericht (Krimi, Thriller, 2008, Austria): Also in the main cast is Tobias Moretti who is also one of the greatest austrian actors. It starts out with a gurl being hit to death with stones and the killing spread goes on in biblical manner.
Der Tantz mit dem Teufel (Drama, Krimi, 2001, made by Sat1 a german tv channel.) Tobias Moretti again in the main cast. It is about the kidnaping of Richard Oetker so it is based on a real event.
Das merkwürdige Verhalten geschlechtsreifer Großstädter zur Paarungszeit (love, comedy, 1998, not sure but most likely Germany) it is a comedy about horny germans, thats it, thats the plot.
Du bist nicht allein - Roy Black (biography, 1996, Germany) He os playing Roy Black himself (a famous singer in the german speaking area.) I heard this movie even got an oscar or something but i wanted to include it because CHRISTOPH IS SINGING AND YOU NEED TO HEAR THAT (ofc singing scenes are also on youtube)
Wahnfried (Drama, Austria, 1986) That one might also bee knowen. He os playing Friedrich Nietzsche.
König der letzten Tage (Historical, 1993, Germany) it is about "die Wiedertäufer von Münster) musst wat h for every history buff (and shit thats the hottest waltz so far)
Jennerwein (Drama, Heimatfilm (thats what we call movies playing on the countryside of austria/bavaria), 2003, Austria and Bavaria) Jennerwein is a Wilderer (hunting illegaly) You could count that one as historical as well.
Der Mörder ist unter uns (Krimi, Thriller, 2003, Germany) Waltz is a forensic psychologist and is on the hunt for a murderer/rapist
I might add some more later. Everybody that is able to understand german can find some of those movies on youtube pretty easy. For the others, I can try to find an english sub for you. Just pm me and tell me the movie.

Horst Buchholz as Freddy Borchert in Die Halbstarken/Teenage Wolfpack (Georg Tressler, 1956)
Most of the German films of the 1950s were musical comedies, sentimental dramas or Heimatfilms. An exception was the teen drama Die Halbstarken/Teenage Wolfpack (Georg Tressler, 1956) which brought dark alleys, petticoats, leather jackets, American cars, teenage sex and crime to the screen. Germany's first look on juvenile delinquency gave also a rare realistic view of life in a German city during the Wirschaftswunder era, the years of the economic miracle. The film became a cult hit all over Europe and two new stars were born, Horst Buchholz as the charismatic gang leader and Karin Baal as his femme fatale.

"Die Heimatfilme": rural culture in post-war German Cinema
Largely unknown outside Germany, Switzerland and Austria, the Heimatfilm is a part of post-war German popular culture (we can translate the term heimat both as countryside, birthplace and homeland). With its colorful landscapes, yodels and snow-capped peaks, let us return to this atypical cinematographic genre.
Tumblr media
 A popular post-war genre
First Heimatfilme appeared at the end of the Second World War. They portrayed a rural life far from the real problems affecting the vanquished German and Austrian populations. Like the lateral division seen in Northern and Southern France with the Provencal culture, notably represented by the famous French writer and screenwriter Marcel Pagnol, those films are also representative of a certain lateral division between Northern Germany (Berlin, Hamburg) and Southern Germany (especially Bavaria and the Black Forest region).
Heimatfilme are usually opposed to Trümmerfilme, literally "rubble films" depicting Germany ravaged after the war. Unlike those films, Heimatfilme have had great success due to their airiness. During the 50s, the term Heimatfilm gradually became the new name for a particular cinematographic genre which used to be called Volksfilm, literally « popular film ».
Tumblr media
 A post-war reconstruction of identity
In Nazi Germany, Leni Riefenstahl had portrayed the rural landscapes of the German and Austrian countryside for propaganda purposes; but in a certain way Nazism tried to diminish this rural culture, promoting their own ideological and modern vision of the German nation. It’s now more commonly admitted that Heimatfilme have contributed to restoring the local identities that National Socialism had tried to pull apart. According to Celia Applegate, an American scholar of modern German history, “the postwar Heimatfilm trend in Germany stemmed at least in part from a general loss of confidence, which led many to undertake the recovery of that distinctive German patriotism that Nazism had discouraged”. Heimatfilme have contributed towards restoring a sort of locally rooted heritage, in a period of national identity reconstruction.
