World Cup III
Magdalena Eriksson x Hardersson!Reader
Part of The Big Adventures Universe
Summary: Sweden vs USA
Tumblr media
Usually, you go with Momma to her camp for international break or back to Denmark to spend time with Momma's parents. But, this year, it's the World Cup and you're with Morsa.
Sweden camp is a little strange, a lot stranger than Denmark camp. At Denmark camp, Momma lets you have free reign so long as you're within eye line of one of her teammates.
Morsa, on the other hand, doesn't let you wander. She keeps your hand tight in her own as she introduces you to everyone.
You know a lot of them already though from your visits but this is the first time that you're actually been around them a lot.
Much to Morsa's annoyance, you stick quite firm to the Arsenal Swedes and then to Amanda when you find out that she's now signed for Arsenal.
If you're not with them then you're with your moster (aunt) Frido, who shares you room in Sweden with Morsa.
"There she is," Captain Caroline says one morning as you hold Frido's hand tight as you wait for her to fill your breakfast plate," Future Captain of Sweden, my little protégé."
You don't quite understand what that means but you know it kind of means that you'll be like her when you're older.
"Don't let Pernille find out you've said that," Johanna says from further down the line," She almost slapped me when I told her that y/n will be a Swedish international."
"That doesn't sound like Pernille," Filippa says, frowning as she moves to take your plate from Frido and put some grapes on it before passing it off to Nathalie to add more to.
"Momma says that I have forever to choose the right team," You say as you go up on your tiptoes to see what juice options there are. Morsa and your aunties usually have weird-tasting protein drinks but you don't like that so the cooks have started to leave juice out in the mornings for you.
"And that Morsa should stop trying to convince me to play for Sweden just because she's ego-eg...er, just because she's tistical...no...er...Because she's got a big head."
"Who's got a big head?" Morsa joins you all now, looking freshly showered.
"You, apparently," Linda scoffs.
Morsa looks confused, brow furrowed in a way that Momma likes to joke you do too. She feels her head. "I don't get it. Who said that?"
You smile, skipping away from Frido to hold her hand. "No one."
"You're up to something, princesse."
You shake your head. "No!"
"Yes!"
"No!"
Morsa gives you a long, considering look before deciding to drop it. "Who's got your breakfast? You need to eat if you're going to grow up big and strong like me and play for Sweden."
She goes back to looking confused when the whole team starts laughing at her.
She doesn't get the joke through the entirety of camp and all through the flight to Australia. The World Cup beginning takes her mind off of it and you flip-flop between staying with her and staying with Momma.
The highlight of your World Cup so far is meeting Keira Walsh and getting her and Mary Earps' shirts. It's a feeling like no other and you ride that high all the way back to the Swedish Camp and all through the rest of their group stage.
You only really tune back in to what your Morsa is doing when she goes up against America.
The day starts like any other. You're carted into breakfast by Nilla, who proclaims you the team's good luck charm (and they'll need all the luck they can get going against the US).
"If you win today, Zećira," You say, as Frido wipes your mouth" Can I have your special gloves?"
"If we win," Zećira says," Then you can have absolutely anything you want."
You arrive at the stadium in the coach and Morsa changes you into your special Eriksson shirt and lets you go around the locker room giving everyone hugs and kisses - you take extra care to give your favourite Arsenal girls, your moster Frido and Zećira the biggest ones.
You return to Morsa and hug her tight. Just like all her World Cup matches, you walk out as her mascot and give her a big kiss before kick off where you scamper off to the bench.
Lina isn't starting today so you stick close to her side on the bench as she sits you on her lap so you can see everything. She tells you that the US are the reigning champions and are very good so this match means a lot.
America rains down on your team and you crane your head to watch as Zećira pulls off another amazing save.
You want to be like that one day, playing as the first keeper for your country. You want to be just like Zećira and save all the goals that come your way.
It's nearing the end of the first half and there's still no goal on either side. The US continues to attack Morsa's defence and Zećira's goal but can't quite get it passed.
A few times Lina covers your eyes when she thinks America is going to score but they're all false alarms.
The game falls into half-time fairly quickly and you're relegated back to the locker room to regroup.
"Come here, princesse."
Morsa seems a bit sad and down and you ragdoll to let her pick you up and squeeze. When she lets you go, she cups your cheek. "I'm going to get you another medal," She says," We're not going out here."
"I don't need another one," You say softly," I'm happy with my one now."
Morsa shakes her head. "No, no. I will get you another one. You're going to get a medal in every World Cup I play until you're old enough to earn your own. We aren't letting them knock us out."
Morsa's determined now and you just nod.
You weave your way through the group of girls until you're in front of Zećira. You don't say anything, just crash into her arms and give her the best hug you can manage.
The second half goes much the same as the first and you have to let go of Lina for her to go onto the pitch so you end up attached to Johanna who's just come off and holds you so tight that you almost can't breathe.
That feeling persists in your chest as the game ends in penalties.
The team lines up by the edge of the pitch. You stand in the very middle as you watch on.
Zećira goes the right way for the US's first shot but misses out on the save. But moster Frido keeps Sweden level with her own goal. Horan gets the next goal but Elin scores back.
You shift anxiously on your feet, scuffing your shoes on the grass.
Kristie, who you know dates Sam, scores one past Zećira and you have to hold your breath as Nathalie misses her shot. You only release it when the US also fail to score their next goal but then suck in another one when Naeher saves Rebecka's.
With Smith missing her own and Hanna scoring, you feel more content again.
Naeher scores then it's Morsa's turn.
You bite at your lip and play with your Eriksson jersey as Morsa does her little runup.
The ball flies into the top corner of the goal and you smile.
O'Hara misses and then Lina...Maybe scores?
You don't understand what's going on.
"They're checking VAR," Caroline says as she crouches by you," Because Lina's goal might have already gone over the line before Naeher saved it."
The whole stadium is silent as the ref listens to what they're saying in her ear.
You grab hold of Caroline in one hand and Johanna in the other.
The ref makes an odd gesture and suddenly you're being thrown into the air and Johanna's running with you in her arms.
Everyone converges on Lina and then on you, giving you kisses and spinning you around. You slip away before Morsa can trap you with her own love and run to your favourite goalkeeper in the whole wide world.
You skid to a stop as Naeher wildly gestures to the ref.
Zećira pulls a glove off her hand and claps her palm against Naeher's before lifting you up so you can do the same.
She throws you into the air like Johanna did and catches you. You're placed safely on the ground again as a cameraman catches the moment Zećira kneels in front of you and pulls her gloves onto your hands.
"We won," Morsa says to you.
"You had a good goal," You say, easily falling into her embrace.
"I sense a but?" She teases and you look down at the gloves still on your hands.
"But Zećira was the best today. I'm going to be the best like her one day too."
"Of course you are."

Mothers
Tumblr media
W.C.- 3k
Your mother didn’t plan on having you at the young age of 15, but after spending 9 months inside your mother you came out a perfectly healthy baby in the year 2000. She had the support of her parents, your grandparents, the second she told them she was expecting and they helped her raise you.
They took care of you while she was away in school and they helped drop you off at numerous football practices and games. You were there for your mothers graduation from secondary school when you were 3, and then later for when she got her undergraduate degree in nursing. When you were 16, she got her license and could officially begin her practice in the intensive care unit.
Nobody was prouder than you when she got it and you made sure that everybody knew that your mother, the one that had you at 15 had become a doctor.
Still, despite her intensive job she made sure to come and see you play at least once a month, to bring you to practice the days she wasn’t called in and to make sure that she told you that she loved no one like she loved you. When you started to play in the boys teams, ‘cause there weren’t enough girls who wanted to play in your town, she supported you. Everytime you came home with scraped up knees or a sprained wrist, she took care of you like a mother as she joked about you being her first ever patient with how clumsy you are.
When your grandmother died, you were nearly 17 and on the cusp of breaking into the senior national team after having outplayed some of the older players in the U23 camp and playing in the first team for your club. Now everything you did was to make her as proud as you could, her last wish was for you to make the senior teams both club and country. And so when you were 17 years old both her wishes came true when you got selected into the England Euros squad, where you actually got to play some minutes in the group stages and then in the closing minutes of the knockout matches. In the end you got a bronze medal and 2 goals in your resume as a substitute.
At 18 you signed with Arsenal and at 19 you were picked for the World cup squad with starting minutes. Unfortunately, an elbow to the face in the USA game had you sitting out the bronze medal match against Sweden, your eye socket and nose fractured. You had seen how worried your mother looked in the stands as you went down, not just from a mother’s point of view but also a doctors . It looked gruesome. But the worst part, you could do nothing as your team was losing.
But through the experience of the incredible loss you grew stronger, the will to win overwhelmed the little voice in your head telling you that it wasn’t possible or that you couldn’t do it. So you continued to train and get better, all while getting mentored by the Arsenal women and winning award after award along the way.
And now at 23, you’re one of the most accomplished youngsters in women’s football after having won the Euros and the subsequent golden boot. And now there was no one prouder than your mother and grandfather. You knew your grandma was watching over your every move and cheering you on from wherever you go when you die.
Winning the Fifa Women’s best player for the 21/22-season, beating out your teammate and the legendary Alexia Putellas had you shell shocked mouth hanging open like an idiot. But when you went up to accept the award, you credited your grandparents and your mother for your success before thanking your coaches. Now that trophy is located on a shelf at your mothers house like most of your other trophies, the only one that lays at home in your apartment is the medal you got for the Euros win.
People hadn’t really noticed your mother before the closing game against Bayern, where she had gotten a leave of absence from her workplace. She was the first one you went to, nearly collapsing into her arms at the sidelines before returning to your teammates to celebrate. Fortunately, the Arsenal media team managed to capture the sweet moment between the mother and daughter, later posting it to TikTok where they captioned it ‘Like mother like daughter’.
Unbeknownst to you, the video went completely viral with thousands of people simping over your mother. You were much too busy to spend unnecessary time on social media, so you had not seen the people obsessing over your mother or the ones asking if your father could fight. That was before you went on international break, excited to finally meet your girlfriend again after a few weeks of only being able to communicate over the phone.
—-
Stepping out of the taxi, you come face to face with St George’s Park once again. You stand still for a couple of seconds before walking in through the entrance, immediately seeing a member of the media team with their fist up. You spud them before continuing your walk to the front desk where the names of your roommates stood.
Your eyes flit over the paper before you find your name scribbled beside Alessia’s and you do a silly dance in your place, happy that you could cuddle with your girl after weeks apart.
An arm slinging around your shoulder has you coming to your senses, looking to your right you see your girlfriend standing there. You pull her in by the waist as you lean your cheek on top of her head just taking a moment to hug her and relish in her company before everything becomes hectic. What you don’t plan on is one of your bestfriends slamming into you and making all three of you fall to the ground. You hear Ella start to speak loudly in your ear but you can’t focus on anything she’s saying, not with Alessia laying on top of you, her body fitting like a puzzle piece to your own.
Slapping a hand over Ella’s gaping mouth you take a moment to relax in the silence, already knowing that this camp was going to be like hell if it continued like that. Alessia puts her hands on either side of your body before pushing herself up to her feet.
She reaches her hand out towards you but before you are able to grab it, Tooney has. Alessia starts the motion of pulling her up, but as she shoots you a wink you know exactly what would occur. Alessia loosens her grip on Ella's hand before she has time to react, dropping her on her arse. The lobby explodes with laughter before you pull yourself up, walking up to your room before going to sleep as soon as your head hits the pillow, Alessia joining you after a short time.
The next few days pass unnecessarily fast and before you know it you’re lining up next to Brazil, ready for the first ever women’s Finalissima. You dominated the first half going into halftime 1-0 up, and with your versatility giving you the ability to drive up the field and create chances while being able to also drop back down and help defend.
In the next half it seems like Brazil has woken up from their stupe and they start pressing in a way that has your defense scrambling and you realize that if you want to prevent Brazil from scoring you will have to help out more at the farther end of the field.
When the ball leaves the Brazilian players' feet, you know it is going into the goal and you can only pray for their penalties to not follow the same path.
You find yourself in an incredibly stressful situation as possibly the last penalty taker, it all depended on whether the ball hits the back of the net or not. Feeling strong hands place themselves on your back and a soft whisper of “You’ve got this” from your girlfriend has all your nerves washing away and your senses clear, the only focus on putting the ball in the back of the net.
Looking towards the crowd, you try to spot your mother and grandfather. When you catch sight of them you gain even more confidence as most people in the stadium couldn’t look on, your family just looked on with smirks and knowing looks on their faces.
You place the ball in the penalty spot, completely relaxed and calm despite having run around the pitch for a full 90 minutes plus stoppage time. The goalkeeper tries to distract you, jumping around and pointing at different parts of the net but you see the obvious dread in her face. You’re known for absolutely slamming the ball into the goal with an uncanny precision, especially penalties.
Kissing your fingers before pressing them into the shield resting above your heart, you start your runup. As you strike the ball with a power entirely your own you can feel how it’s going to hit the back of the net, it’s a feeling you’ve experienced many times before so many times that it’s become a staple of your matches.
The roaring of the fans confirm your thoughts and start running around the pitch all while expressing your delight through a loud yell echoing loud over the fans. Soon enough your teammates catch up to you and trap you in a tight embrace that you have no intention of escaping. As they start to depart from the team hug, Alessia and you remain in a tight embrace, covering your mouths when you speak to each other.
Whispers of ‘I love you so much’ and ‘I am so proud of you’ are exchanged before you are interrupted by a staff member informing you that the medal ceremony would take place in a short bit. You go and stand with your team as the shimmering medals are placed around your necks, walking towards the podium set up for you with a smile that could light up the entirety of Wembley.
Watching as Leah and Mary lift the trophy high above their heads has you feeling an immense sense of pride and joy. Proud to be part of this record breaking team.
As soon as you’re done with taking all the pictures needed featuring your medal, you’re off heading in the direction of your mother. Noticing the smile on her face, the one you inherited, has your feet moving faster in her direction. You grip the medal between sweaty fingers and pull it off, putting it around your mother’s neck.
“You’re the real champion here Ma. Thank you so much for being here today and supporting me, I love you” She replies with her own ‘I love you’, putting her fists up and doing your own celebration you made with her as a child by putting your own up and kissing them before double fistbumping her.
Staying with your family for a little longer, you depart from them to go and celebrate with your team. You barely reach your girlfriend before you’re whisked away for an interview with the broadcasting.
Putting on the headset and taking the mic from the staff, you hear the recognisable voice of Alex Scott flooding through your headphones.
“-And now we’re joined by the Euros and Finalissima winner, Y/n Y/l/n. How are you feeling after winning yet another trophy? I imagine you must feel quite ecstatic.”
“Spot on Alex, but yeah I am in disbelief honestly. Brazil were in form today and were incredible opponents. Yeah so this is an accomplishment we’re fortunate enough to experience.”
You spend the next few minutes speaking to the former player, talking about a large range of things before the topic of your mother comes up.
“I saw you were giving your medal to your mother earlier, is that something you always do?” Alex questions you.
“I usually give her all my medals and awards because I don’t have the space for them at my apartment. I've given her all but the Euros trophies as those are on a shelf in my bedroom. A reminder that I can do anything I set my mind to.” Your mother had always been the safekeep of your trophies, even as you reached adulthood she took care of them for you.
“Speaking of your mother, have you seen the comments circulating?”
Clear confusion lays over your face like a blanket, no clue about these ‘comments’ apparently regarding your mother.
“Comments? What comments?”
“You haven’t heard?! Oh boy you’re in for a ride.”
You can feel how whatever’s going to come out of her mouth next won’t be something you will enjoy hearing.
“Before you start, I feel like I won’t enjoy what you’ll say so before you continue I’ll need my emotional support human. Just a second.”
Sticking your fingers in your mouth and blowing, you let out a deafening wolf whistle loud enough to catch Alessia’s attention.
As Alessia turns towards you with her big blue doe eyes, you can’t help but practically melt under her affectionate gaze. Realizing that you are still on national television, you quickly wave her over.
When she stands beside you, the arm hanging by your side instinctively wraps around her waist in a protective grip. The same staff member that gave you your headphones hands Alessia a pair to be able to understand.
“Okay, so now that my emotional support human is here you are allowed to continue.”
Alessia smiles at the cheeky comment, the smile soon turning into a confused frown, not knowing the subject of conversation.
“I can see how you’re a bit confused there Alessia, so I’ll catch you up to speed. I was just asking Y/n if she had seen the comments under the Arsenal post, to which she said she hadn’t so I’m telling you both now.”
Judging by the mortified expression that crosses Alessia’s face you deduce that she most definitely knows exactly what comments Alex is talking about. You send her a skeptical look before telling Alex to start telling you about the comments.
“Arsenal posted a TikTok after the game against Bayern of you hugging your mother over the barrier. That video has gone viral, with thousands of people ‘simping’ over her in the comments.”
Even without hearing these comments you’re horrified, people hitting on your mother or thinking she was attractive wasn’t something new. It came with having a young mother but you’d never really been too bothered by them before. But now, knowing that thousands of people have the hots for your mother makes you want to crawl into bed and stay there until your last breath.
“Really?! My mother? That’s so weird on so many different levels bro…that’s just so weird and frankly quite gross. Don’t get me wrong, my mother is an incredible person, but knowing that thousands of people think that your mother is attractive is really unsettling. Now I’m curious about what they’ve said.”
Alessia nods along to your statement, knowing how much you struggled with seeing people on the internet thirsting for her and to now have people thirsting over your mom would make it worse.
“Ready? Okay, ‘Who was supposed to tell me that Y/n Y/l/n’s mom was such a MILF?’” Alex’s reading leaves you dry heaving as you quickly realize your mistake of wanting to hear the comments. Alessia pats your back in a ploy to comfort you all while holding back a giggle at your vivid reaction.
Continuing her assault on your ears, Alex recounts many different comments surrounding your mother and you have an equally vivid reaction to each one. Alessia keeps on rubbing your back in circles, though she can’t hold her laugh back anymore, the brilliant sound your only savior from the extreme embarrassment of the situation. Social media is already flooding with new memes of your reactions and you know that you’re going to be memed for the rest of your lifetime.
“Stop, stop! I tap out! No more. I love you Alex, but enough. Thank you for the interview, I’ll see you soon.”
You remove the headphones from your head and hand them and the microphone back to the staff before making your way back to the locker room, where it seems like people have already gotten a hold of the memes. Even Arsenal’s official page has plastered your reaction all over their social media.
When Alessia and you go and visit your mother a few weeks later, they’re both amused to realize your inability to look her in the eyes. Their apparent shared love for tormenting you makes your life a living hell over the next few hours and as you settle in your car to drive home you tell her,
“You’re sleeping on the couch tonight.”
“No I’m not” She replies through a smug smirk.
“Yeah you are”
“Unless you don’t want to sleep tonight I’m sleeping in our bed”
You hate how well she knows you and your sleeping habits while she’s near. Your only response is a huff and Alessia knows that she’s won this time. You let her think that for a little before sneaking your hand onto her thigh as you keep on driving, paying little attention to her. When you feel goosebumps rising under your hand and see her shiver out of the corner of your eye, you know that you’re the true winner.
I kind of hate this, but it’s pretty funny so it’s what you get, and I would usually put a read more thingy on longer docs like these but I can’t figure out how you do it on mobile

2024 IIHF Women’s World Championships Season Wrap Up
All of our women’s worlds tournaments have finished, so here is a short summary of each tournament, who got promoted/relegated, and top performers.
As a quick disclaimer: how they do best players of each tournament tends to be a little different for each one, some have MVPs and some don’t, idk why
Championship / Top Division
Final standings
Canada (Gold)
USA (silver)
Finland (Bronze)
Czechia
Switzerland
Germany
Sweden
Japan
China (relegated)
Denmark (relegated)
Tournament MVP: Laila Edwards (USA)
Top goaltender: Sandra Abstreiter (Germany)
Top defender: Renata Fast (Canada)
All star team: Sanni Ahola (Finland), Renata fast (Canada), Caroline Harvey (USA), Laila Edwards (USA), Natalie Mlynkova (Czechia), Alex carpenter (USA)
Tournament summary: this is gonna be my longest short summary as this is the tournament I have the most coverage of.
We finally have USA and Canada at the best versions of themselves again, solid coaching for both, a mix of youth and vets, for the most part all healthy, making for a great gold medal game.
Germany is the biggest positive surprise this tournament. They went from ninth in 2022 to eighth in 2021 to sixth this year, that’s pretty big gains, abstreiter had a phenomenal tournament with the best save percentage despite one of the heaviest workloads, but I was also really impressed by the team defense. Both Welcke twins, Jobst-Smith, Franziska Feldmeier were huge this tournament.
China may have gotten relegated but I think this tournament was still a success for them, considering the significant roster changes they experienced, they were still able to hang with most of the group B teams. Jiahui Zhan was phenomenal in goal and kept them in games, which is such a big part of these tournaments. They don’t have the star power on offense yet, but what they do have is a program that is committed to funding the national team and providing a lot of centralization time to create a cohesive team, and that environment will start creating elite scorers in time.
Finland bounced back after being hammered with injuries last year, Ahola firmly has won the crease, and Nelli Laitinen solidified her capabilities as a top pair defender. Czechia saw a breakout tournament from Natalie Mlynkova that carried them to a fourth place finish even when the rest of their offense was struggling. Switzerland has been able to fill a Phoebe Stänz shaped hole in their lineup with Ivana Wey. Denmark struggled hard without Jakobsen, and shows clear signs of a federation neglecting their program and losing their players - they barely responded to Jakobsen’s retirement, and were the only national team not to secure some kind of way to watch for those in Denmark. Japan disappointed this tournament, and will need to find an elite goaltender if they hope to be in the top division again. Sweden didn’t have a lot of things go their way this tournament, but youth talent in goal scoring was a bright spot for them. They are an undeniably deep team if they can get it all clicking at the same time.
Division IA
Norway - promoted
Hungary - promoted
France
Austria
Netherlands
South Korea - relegated
Best goaltender: Ena Nystrøm (Norway)
Best defender: Annika Fazokas (Austria)
Best forward: Estelle Duvin (France)
Summary; For the first time since 1997, Norway has been promoted to the top division! Despite not having the offense other teams had, they only conceded six goals all tournament and only one was at even strength. They relied heavily on their young core like Emma Bergesen and Millie Rose Sirium to lead the way. Hungary was able to earn promotion despite missing Fanni Garát-Gasparics, and only scoring nine goals all tournament. They played near flawless defense, only allowing 91 shots against in 5 games (averaging around 18 against per game) and being perfect on the PK. France had arguably the best first line in this tournament, Estelle duvin - Chloe aurard - Clara rozier can hang with anyone, but was shut down by Hungary in the final game to lose the chance at promotion.
Austria had a WILD tournament, no one scored more than them, but they also had uncharacteristically struggling goaltending performance from the Luggin sisters who have been pretty consistently solid in international tournaments. Not much to worry about long term there, it happens in short samples, but tough break when offense was so good. More of the same for the Netherlands, who are looking for their next wave of young players to help propel this team, but Kayleigh Hammers continues to prove herself as a special talent. Lastly, South Korea was in the IA tournament for the first time, has a lot of work to do before they can be a mainstay here but this is the first step and is valuable experience
Division IB
Final rankings
Slovakia
Latvia
Italy
Great Britain
Slovenia
Poland
MVP: Karina Silajane (Latvia)
Top forward: Janka Hlinka (Slovakia)
Top defender: Laura Lobis (Italy)
Top goaltender: Pia Dukaric (Slovenia)
Short summary: Slovakia returns to division IA after slipping for a few years and being relegated last year. They were a clear step above most of the other competition in this tournament, especially defensively, but we are seeing the gap shrink. Pia Dukaric for Slovenia may be the most underrated goaltender in the world; she faced 308 shots this tournament in 5 games (about 61 per game) and only conceded 15 goals in that span. Slovenia would 100% be relegated without her. Latvia is playing in division IB for the first time since 2019 and had a funny tournament - they weren’t at the top of anything in team stats, but they were good enough at everything to be a very complete team and Karina Silajane was phenomenal in big moments.
Italy also impressed, though some frustration is probably there that they’ve finished in the same spot for the third year straight, they’re undoubtedly a better team than they were three years ago. Italy is the only team to beat Slovakia in this tournament, and were one of the best teams in terms of limiting shots against. Laura Lobis and Natalie Mattivi are a very legit first pair, and Martina Fedel is an elite goaltender. They don’t have a top goal scorer right now, but that may be coming in Matilde Fantin, who was not able to play this tournament due to injury. Poland fell hard this tournament going from second place last year to being relegated. Part of this is an shaky performance in net from Martyna Sass, who was great at the club level and usually solid in goal, but she played way more games than she normally does this year and may have been overtaxed at the end. She was not bad but Poland heavily relies on goaltenders to steal games. The other, bigger part is the offense completely disappearing - they only scored six goals, which will not get it done in any tournament. Finally, Great Britain was a confusing team this tournament, but despite offensive woes avoided relegation by keeping games close and pulling out wins versus Italy and Slovenia. They only scored six goals in the tournament and two were against the best goaltender in the tournament, which is how hockey is sometimes.
Division IIA
Final rankings
Kazakhstan - promoted
Spain
Mexico
Taiwan
Iceland
Belgium - relegated
Top goalkeeper: Arina Chshyokolova (Kazakhstan)
Top defender: Bridget O’Hare (Spain)
Top forward: Alexandra Shegay (Kazakhstan)
Summary: Kazakhstan was relegated last year and not looking to stay in this division for long. A solid u25 core has continued to show promise for them. Spain has really created a nice core for themselves with Vega Munoz, Bridget O’Hare, Alba Gonzalo, Claudia Castellanos, and Sofia Scilipoti - they dominated most teams but came up just short against Kazakhstan in the final game. That said, I’d wager a promotion is in their near future. Mexico continues to finish in third in this tournament as they have for a few years, with a lot of players born 2000 or later making up the roster, but we have to give 39 year old Claudia Tellez her flowers - it’s been a decade since she started playing at Worlds and still is putting up over a points game while also coaching the u18 team. Just a total legend. Mexican Goaltender Monica Renteria also had the best save percentage of the tournament at age 36, having also been on the initial women’s worlds team Mexico with Claudia a decade ago.
Taiwan could not score, but they did have an elite goalie tandem of Ai Chung and Tzu-Ting Hsu (Beauts fans, you may remember her from the 2019-2020 season, also goes by Tiffany Hsu) that kept them in games. Yun-Chu Huang was responsible for 5 of the teams 8 goals. Iceland continues to stagnate, but 19 year old defender Katrín Björnsdóttir was extremely impressive this tournament. Belgium was outmatched in their first chance at this division and was relegated, but has a few promising young players that may incident they’ll be back soon
Division IIB
Final standings
North Korea - Promoted
Australia
Hong Kong
New Zealand
Turkey
South Africa - relegated
Top goalkeeper: Erva Kanat (Turkey)
Top defender; Matilda Pethrick (Australia)
Top forward: Jong Su-hyon (North Korea)
Summary: we haven’t seen North Korea at the international stage since before the pandemic and didn’t really know what to expect in their return and then they came back and just dominated this tournament. North Korea and Australia were a clear step above the rest of the competitors, and North Korea ultimately got the promotion in a shootout goal by Hyang Jang. Keira Mok of Hong Kong was another goaltender with a stellar performance, and Nikki Sharp was great for Australia in terms of forwards. South Africa’s relegation comes as no surprise, as they’d been trending down for a few years.
Division IIIA
Final rankings
Ukraine - promotion
Romania
Lithuania
Serbia
Croatia
Bulgaria - relegation
Top Goaltender: Vilte Belicenkaite (Lithuania)
Top Defender: Diana Stolar (Croatia)
Top forward: Valeria Manchak (Ukraine)
Summary: a lot of these programs are very new to the women’s worlds circuit, with teams like Lithuania only competing in this capacity since 2019, Ukraine in 2019, or Serbia since 2021 (though they may have competed in other tournaments / formats). There’s a significant number of U18 players playing in this tournament because of that. Romania and Serbia were the most improved team from last year, Romania going from fourth to second and Serbia going from division B to finishing fourth.
Division IIIB
As Israel should not have been allowed to participate in this tournament due to the genocide they are carrying out, and I will not be acknowledging their participation or any of their players as a result.
Final rankings:
1. Thailand
2. Estonia
4. Singapore
5. Bosnia and Herzegovina
Top goaltender: Sofia Salamatina (Estonia)
Top forward: Apichaya Kosanunt
Summary; Thailand wins gold in its debut! What a fantastic start to women’s worlds for them, as they won every game and scored 20 goals while only ever giving up one. Strong defense meant they only saw 59 shots all tournament. Singapore also made their Women’s Worlds debut and got their first tournament win and saw Tiffany Ong score three goals.

light on
The one where Y/N is the daughter of a legendary Team USA coach and used to attend the development program with the boys. 8 years after they last saw each other in person, a reunion brings Jack and Y/N back into each other’s lives... and hearts.

XXII XXIII - rewind XXIV
“Jack Hughes started dating my mom when I was five. He watched movies with me, he gave me an Elsa dress, he helped me with my drawings and paintings and he was the best cook ever. He always made different voices for every character when he read to me. I knew he was the one for my mommy. Back then I didn’t know...”
Y/N was supposed to be listening to her daughter, who was reading out her school assignment to her, but ended up zoning out, her mind travelling back to that fateful day, precisely three years prior.
It was always a hard day in the Y/L/N household. It was overcharged with lots of different emotions. Mainly anger and sadness. But also hope. Hope for a better, brighter future. There is a fine line between both sides of the coin. Either way, it was a difficult day to remember and go through.
Most days, she barely remembered the details of that night. Y/N remembered the indescribable pain she felt, River's arms around her at the hospital as she sobbed uncontrollably into her shirt. Ellen Hughes' face. The media frenzy. But she didn’t remember specifics. Most days.
Some days it all came back to her, making her struggle to breathe. When it hit her, it hit her hard. But she was never alone when it did, and for that she was extremely grateful.
The doctor glanced at her daughter, now eight, her long hair almost reaching the bottom of her back. She looked like an angel. She was her angel.
Charlie had been locked up and the judge didn’t go easy on him. After a long, extenuating trial, it was proven that he was abusive and his intention, which originally was to take his daughter and disappear, only carrying the gun to use if faced with resistance, took a turn from evil to extremely evil when he shot two rounds at an unarmed Jack Hughes.
Joey was still going to a therapist every month, just to check in on how she was handling everything. She made peace with it, while Y/N needed weekly visits to cope and keep herself in check. The doctor's anxiety was always over the roof, even though she knew he wouldn’t be able to come back and hurt her. Even though he already did.
Today, she was getting flashbacks to the candlelight vigil his fans had organized. Everyone was wearing white, speeches were being made, there wasn’t a dry eye present. Of course she wasn’t able to make it, but she had seen everything on social media. Trevor and Cole had been there and till this very day describe it as one of the hardest things they went through. Everything was so painful. The world was a little less bright. Y/N wasn’t eating, she wasn’t sleeping. She wasn’t living. The first week was the worst, but the group of friends helped keep each other stay strong. They held each other tight when it would’ve been easier to let go. That’s family.
He was their everything. And they were his everything as well. A friend, a father, a boyfriend, a son, a beloved hockey player. Kind, loving, funny, talented, the best one out there. Y/N smiled at the memory of his and Joey's tickletackle that day and how he was always able to make everyone’s day better. That’s Jack Hughes.
“And that’s why he’s my hero, second only to my mom.”
Y/N stood up, wiping the tears from her eyes quickly as she ran to hug her daughter.
“This is beautiful, bug!” she screeched, holding her daughter tightly.
“You think so?” Joey beamed, showing her mother her missing front tooth, the very last one to come out, in the process.
“Yeah, of course!”
“I hope he likes it!” the girl confessed, letting go of her mother to close her notebook and putting it in her backpack.
“You hope who likes what?” Jack inquired, coming from another room, carrying his guitar case on his shoulder.
Y/N and Joey exchanged looks, the girl asking her mother to keep quiet by placing a finger in front of her lips.
“It’s nothing.” Y/N waved him off.
“If this is about Oliver...”
“Dad! Stop” Joey groaned, getting a chuckle from her parents.
“Go brush your teeth, young lady. Dad is dropping you off at school.”
“Fine! But no gossiping about Ollie behind my back!” Y/N's daughter demanded, pointing a finger at both adults, who were struggling to keep their composure.
“Okay, little otter, go. I won’t ask your mom for boy updates.” the brunette man assured her.
The eight-year-old left the kitchen, followed closely by her companion, Finn, who, so many years later, was still by her side at all times.
Jack turned to look at his girlfriend, noticing her eyes were slightly red and puffy.
“Y/N... were you crying?” he asked in a hushed tone, his hands gently cupping her face. “Did Oliver do something to her? I swear to god -“
“No... it’s just... It’s the twentieth.” she gulped, her eyes finding his torso.
She knew exactly where the scar was. Just below his twelfth rib, on his left side. Barely an inch away from his spleen and, most likely, death. The time he had spent in a coma, connected to all sorts of machines, proved it. The days and nights she had spent by his side, holding his hand, were engraved on her brain.
“Y/N...”
“I know... You’re here. He isn’t coming back. Jo's doing great. I don’t need to be acting like this every year. I don’t need to play it in my head over and over again, I - “
“That was not what I was going to say. Babe, it was fucking traumatic. I got the bullet, but you were the one that was there fighting for me, day in and day out, not knowing if I was going to make it past the night. Watching people mourn me as if I were dead. The candlelight vigils. Media clocking down your every move. That leaves wounds, it leaves scars. And you’re getting help and doing much better. Just... Don’t overthink your progress. You’re the strongest person I know. You got this. And if you don’t, I do. I got you. Forever.”
“God, when is Ashton Kutcher making his big entrance and telling me I just got Punk’d? Because you cannot be real.” Y/N groaned, wrapping her arms around him and reveling on the way his sweater smelled like favorite perfume. It smelled like love.
She could feel his chest vibrate against her cheek as he laughed loudly, making her smile even harder. The coach's daughter couldn’t believe she had gotten so lucky. When the Universe had a chance to take everything away from her it had decided not to. And for that, she was eternally grateful.
Jack looked down at her, safe and sound in his arms, her frame fitting perfectly with is. He wished he could freeze that moment in time and go back to it every time he wanted to. Her smile, their daughter, their home. Perfect. Too good to be true.
The hardest part of the last three years had been coming to terms with the fact that what happened wasn’t going to happen again. His rational side tried convincing him that it was true, but late at night he had found himself getting up and checking repeatedly if the doors were locked, the windows shut and the alarms on. Charloe wasn’t coming back to finish the job, though. Jack wasn’t going to lose Y/N and Joey. Everything was going to be okay. He knew it. But at the same time, his brain demanded proof at all times. So, when it did, he held on to his girlfriend. His safe haven. Sometimes she’d look at him funny, wondering what had gotten into him, but she never complained. Being able to be together would never again be taken for granted.
“Hey.” he almost whispered, making her look up at him, a soft smile adorning her lips. “I love you.”
“I love you too, baby.” Y/N cooed, standing on her tippy toes to kiss him.
Jack's hands immediately pulled her closer to him, not ever wanting to let go.
“I’m ready!” Joey announced, coming downstairs showing off her pearly whites. “Ew! Stop! That’s gross.”
“Very gross.” the hockey player agreed, hugging his girlfriend tightly.
“We’re the grossest. Sorry, bug. You’re stuck with us.” her mother chuckled, untangling herself from Jack's embrace to be able to crouch down to her height. “Have a great day at school, Jo. Be nice. Wait for your turn...”
“Don’t pull pranks on Ms. Miller. I know, mom.” the eight-year-old sighed.
“Okay, okay. You’re a big girl. You got it.”
“Let’s go, little otter. No tardiness allowed on Hugheship.” Jack reminded them, picking up Joey's backpack, ushering her outside.
Y/N raised an eyebrow, looking amused.
“Hugheship?”
“Hughes' spaceship!” her daughter replied before Jack could.
“What she said!” he laughed, checking if she had fastened her seatbelt before getting inside. “See you later, beautiful.”
*
“Is the blindfold really necessary?” Y/N asked, raising her hands to touch the fabric covering her eyes.
“Yes. And stop trying to take it off!” he scolded his girlfriend, chuckling, his eyes moving back to the road ahead of him.
“Jack, I swear to god, if this is another attempt to get me to get my wisdom teeth removed...”
“No, no. I’m not making that mistake again... Not even if your teeth get all crooked.” the Devils' plajer shook his head.
“Will you still love me when my teeth get crooked?”
“I would love you even if you had no teeth.” he smiled, even though he knew she couldn’t see him.
The drive was a little over an hour long, with Y/N singing along to every single song on the radio. Jack was always astounded by her capacity to memorise lyrics when he could barely remember the National Anthem. He couldn’t stop stealing glances at the gorgeous woman sat beside him, who couldn’t stop fidgeting in her seat, her curiosity getting the best of her.
Y/N eventually drifted off to sleep, having stayed up late the night before and getting up very early in the morning to get Joey ready for school.
Jack pulled up by the entrance of the natural park, waiting a few more minutes before waking her up. He knew how much she needed to rest and couldn’t bring himself to do it until he got a text from her mother, letting him know she had picked up their little girl and was on her way.
He took a deep breath, reaching to softly shake her awake.
“No, mom. I’ll be up in five.” she mumbled swatting his hand away.
The brunette man let out a loud laugh, deciding to get out and run to her side, opening the door carefully, not wanting her to fall. He gently picked her up and the doctor instantly wrapped her arms around his neck, holding on tight.
“Mom! You’re so strong.” the petite woman sighed, nuzzling into his chest, the scent of his cologne filling up her nostrils and waking her up. “Hey baby.”
She could feel his chest vibrating while he laughed, instantly making her smile.
“Hi, babe. How was the nap?”
“Great... Can I take the blindfold off now? And walk on my own?”
“Ten more minutes and you’ll be skipping around.”
“And seeing?”
“And seeing.” he chuckled, walking along the trail.
“Good. Also, it smells heavenly here. Are we in the woods or something?”
“Or something.” Jack smirked.
“Jack Hughes, is this your way of getting rid of me? Are you going to leave me in the middle of nowhere and drive off into the sunset?”
“Y/N, you’ve been watching way too many episodes of Criminal Minds in a row.”
“I can’t help it, I’ve got a huge crush on...”
“Morgan, I know.” the brunette man rolled his eyes playfully, now huffing and puffing from carrying her for so long. “Alright, Ms. Y/L/N. I’m letting you down. Ready?”
“Ready.” she chirped, letting out a screech when he dropped her, landing on a pile of pillows. “What the hell, Rowdy?”
Her boyfriend dropped down on one knee, taking off her blindfold.
“As promised.” he winked, smoothing out her hair and laughing at how disheveled she looked.
“Shut up, I bet I look crazy!”
“You do not.”
Y/N leaned in to kiss him, cupping both sides of his face with her dainty hands. Losing his balance, Jack fell back on the blanket he had laid out earlier that morning, after dropping Joey off at school, bringing his girlfriend down with him, making her land on his chest.
The couple burst out laughing, the doctor finally taking in her surroundings as she got back to her initial position. They were sitting in the middle of a beautiful clearing, tall trees surrounding them, the sun rays coming through treetops, enveloping them in a golden haze. She glanced around her, seeing the pile of pillows she had fallen on and a checkered red blanket, a small basket set close by.
“What is this?” Y/N inquired, motioning towards the romantic setting. “Am I missing something? Jack, I told you monthversaries aren’t a thing...”
“It’s a romantic picnic. Do I have to have a reason to set a romantic picnic up for my beautiful girlfriend?”
“Is this about Trevor's whole Vegas birthday extravaganza thing? I told you I’m fine with it, but please don’t go all Hangover trilogy on me. Oh and don’t let Alex get a face tattoo, because that would -“
The Devils' player crashed his lips against hers, gently guiding her towards the soft pillows behind her. After a minute or two, he pulled away, trying to catch his breath and being met with Y/N's quizzical facial expression.
“It’s a romantic getaway...But shorter. I wanted to do something nice for you today.”
“Is it because of...hu...”
“Well, kind of. I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s happening because of the date but the date is specific for a reason... It’s just -“
“A beautiful gesture from my amazing boyfriend. Got it, baby.” she beamed up at him, sitting back up. “Thank you.”
Y/N couldn’t believe how lucky she was Coke had knocked some sense into her three years before and made her throw caution to the wind, choosing the man who had, over and over again, chosen her.
He looked at her adoringly, before reaching for the basket and dragging it closer to him.
“So what did you cook for us?” the coach's daughter asked, rubbing her hands together.
“I didn’t cook anything... But...” he began, pulling out two greasy cheeseburgers and waving them in front of her.
“I love you, I love you, I love you!” the brunette squealed, wrapping her arms around Jack's neck before stealing a burger from him. “Did you get -“
“Fries? Of course I did, who do you think I am?” the brunette man feigned hurt, handing her a pack of cheese fries.
“Man, I could marry you right here. On this very spot. Right now. This is so good.” she moaned as she took bite after bite of her favorite junk food.
Jack almost choked on his food, coughing out a large chunk of bread, his face as red as it could get.
“Oh my god! Rowdy! Are you okay? I didn’t mean to... We don’t need to... I don’t want to pressure you, please...”
“Sunshine...” he managed to get out, his voice still hoarse. “I want to marry you. I do. Trust me.” he smiled, seeing her worried expression be replaced by a relieved one.
“You almost choked when I mentioned marriage so I think we’re sitting this one out for a while, hu?” Y/N teased him, eating happily.
*
“So... Are you ready to go?” Jack said, getting up and storing the trash in the basket.
“Go where? I thought we were just having a picnic?” Y/N raised an eyebrow, confused.
“I need to move so I can digest all this food, you know... And a romantic walk doesn’t sound bad, right?” he winked, waiting for her to get on her feet. “We’ll get this on our way back.”
“Okay?” the doctor chuckled, holding on to his forearm and treading by his side.
They stayed silent for a little while, exchanging a few loving looks along the way. Jack's palms were sweating like crazy and Y/N couldn’t help but think it was endearing how, after all those years, he still got so nervous around her. She held on to his arm tighter, her chin resting on his shoulder as she looked up at him.
“Jack Hughes, you are the love of my life. Did you know that?”
“I figured that if you haven’t kicked me out by now I must be doing something right... Being called the love of your life sounds good to me. I just don’t know what I did to deserve you...”
“Your charm totally stems from your badass scar, not going to lie.”
“But you were dating me way before that...”
“Ehh, it was kinda fizzling out by then...” she joked.
“You’re the love of my life as well, sunshine. Don’t doubt it.” he stated, completely sure of himself for one of the very few times in his life.
“I could never, babe. Now...Where are we?”
Jack smiled softly, leading her towards yet another clearing, this one with a very particular set of familiar trees right in the middle of it. He looked down on his girlfriend, completely mesmerized by the beauty of their current location, and he took her hand in his, taking her up to the second one from the left.
The teacher furrowed her eyebrows, not getting the point and glancing at him with nothing but utter confusion on her face.
“These are beautiful, but I am lost.” she confessed.
“Doesn’t this place look oddly familiar?” the Devils' player inquired, motioning towards the log trellis behind the trees.
Suddenly, realization hit her. They were at David and River's wedding venue. Memories of their weekend in the house the couple had rented, skinny dipping, foosball, talking under the stars and a love confession came flooding back. She let go of Jack's hand and ran to the first one on the right, finding their friend’s names carved on the tree they had chosen three years prior.
“The foursome of love? Holy shit, Rowdy! How did you even manage to get here without getting us both lost? Your sense of orientation is literally nonexistent!” Y/N walked up to him, her hands on her hips.
“I did this quite a few times before today.” the brunette man chuckled. “I’ve had time to practice and find the right direction.” he shrugged. “But check this out... Right over... Here.”
The doctor looked at what he was pointing to and she let out a gasp, reading Y/NY/L/N+JH right on top of every other combination of letters.
“Oh my god. When did you - ?” she almost yelled, trying to touch the bark around her and Jack's initials, standing on her tippy toes.
“The same night I told you I liked you. After I went looking for you, I came back to the reception and decided we were too good to not be given a chance. So I carved our initials right here in hopes of one day coming back and my dream having come true.” he reached out to caress her cheek, wiping away a single tear with his thumb. “Because that’s what you are, Y/N. You’re my dream come true. And I thought, if I’m gonna do this, I better do it in the exact same spot where I poured my feelings out to the woman who has had my heart ever since I first met her. Full circle, baby.”
“What? What do you mean do this?”
“Oh honey, you cannot be this dense.” Y/M/N rolled her eyes, coming from the log trellis bellow them.
Behind her were Dan, with his phone in his hand, and her father, who walked hand in hand with Joey, who was looking around like she was waltzing into one of her dreams. When she finally spotted her mother, she ran to hug her, not letting go of her waist as Jack inched closer to both of them.
“What the -“
“Will you shut up for once and let the man speak?” Coach huffed, joining his ex-wife by one of the trees. “Love you, honey. Carry on, Hughes.”
“Thanks, Coach.” the Devils' player chuckled.
“Okay. Sorry, sorry.” Y/N said, shaking her head and turning back to Jack. “I have a tendency to talk a lot and interrupt people when I’m nervous.”
He leaned in placing a hand on her cheek, stroking it gently.
“I know, babe. I know you like the palm of my hand. You put way too much sugar in your morning coffee, you get up extra early to make this huge breakfast we never finish eating, you’re terrible with washing machines so you sometimes end up accidentally mixing my underwear and Joey's ballet gear and consequently dying it all pink.” he stopped himself when he heard a quiet sniffle coming from behind him. “You good, Y/M/N?”
“Yeah, yeah. I’m good. Thank you. Carry on.” the older woman waved him off, prompting him to turn his attention back to his girlfriend.
“As I was saying...” he continued, making everyone else to laugh at how emotional his mother-in-law was. “Mess, you write songs about everything and anything, you have a terrible road rage problem, you make time to give back and help others, you’re an incredible mom to our little girl. Being with you made me a better man. I knew you were the one for me from the minute you checked me against the plexiglass for the very first time, I’m sorry it took me so long to actually do something about it... When we were here the last time my life changed forever because when you kissed me back I knew I was getting a second chance with the girl of my dreams. That night, three years ago, when I was about to pass out, all I could think about was how much I wanted to live my life with you and Joey, how much I needed to be around to see you smile and help her get through life. I knew how deep my love for you actually was. You make me so happy and I hope I can make you just as happy for the rest of our lives. I chose to do this today because that awful memory that has been haunting us for so long is overdue to be replaced by an amazing one. So, without further due and with Joey and your parents’ permission...” he said, getting down on one knee and opening a black velvet box, revealing a beautiful oval-shaped diamond ring inside. “Y/N Y/L/N, will you marry me?”
Y/N let out a gasp, her hands flying up to her mouth as Joey jumped up and down, still holding on to her waist and giggling. A few tears rolled down her cheeks as she took in what was happening and how perfect that moment was.
“Mommy, say yes!” the eight-year-old begged, glancing up at her mom.
The doctor took him by the collar of his shirt and pulled him up, her lips meeting his in a sweet, make-your-heart-burst-with-happiness kiss. She pulled away, her face glowing with pure glee, making his heart beat faster and faster inside his ribcage. After all those years, she still had the power to make him go weak in the knees. One kiss and everything was okay, no matter what. Y/N joined their foreheads, breathless as she stared deep into his warm onyx eyes.
“Is that a yes?” Jack asked, hesitantly.
“Yes. Da. Oui. Sí. Whatever language you want me to say it in. Be mine, Jack Hughes. Forever.”
Jack let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in, a nervous chuckle coming out of his mouth as he ran his hands through his hair, never dropping the black velvet box, and proceeding to grab her face, peppering small pecks all over her nose, cheeks, lips and forehead, making her laugh as the four people present watched them happily.
“So, do I get to wear the ring now or are you going to carry that around a little bit longer?” Y/N teased him, pointing towards the box.
“Oh, yeah, of course. Wait, okay.” he stuttered, his hands shaking as he pulled the ring out.
He effortlessly slid the ring onto her finger, earning claps and cheers from Coach and Y/M/N, while Dan took pictures, trying to refrain from crying his heart out right then and there.
“Do you like it?” he whispered in her ear when she pulled him into a tight embrace.
“I love it. And I love you.” she spoke in a hushed tone, pressing her lips just bellow his ear lobe.
“I love you too, Mess. Thank you for choosing me.” the brunette man smiled, putting a strand of hair behind her ear.
“Not choosing you could never be an option, Gretz.” the doctor assured him, looking straight into his eyes and leaning back in for another kiss.
“Okay, kids! Too much PDA is actually a thing.” Coach clapped his hands loudly, to bring them back down to planet Earth. “Hughes, wasn’t there something else you wanted to ask?”
“Oh! Yes! Oh my god, yes. I wanted to...” he began, letting go of his fiancée and crouching down in front of Joey, who looked overjoyed by the recent turn of events, taking her two hands in his and signaling for Y/N to join them with his head. “Well, I want to...Hmmm... Okay let me start again... I love you, Jo. You’ve been my daughter in my head and in my heart for three years now... I read you your bedtime stories, I stay up late at night worrying about your future, my heart breaks when you cry... I already call you my kid and I already brag about you to everyone around me but... I would like to make it official... I mean, if you want to and if your mother will allow me to... I would like to adopt you and be legally known as Josephine Y/L/N's dad. What do you say, girls?”
Y/N looked at him with tears in her eyes, mimicking Joey as she stared at the man she had grown to love as her father figure in shock. Having Jack as her dad was something she never took for granted and she knew he was the best man around. It was all true. He was already hers to keep. And she sure wanted him to be recognized as the father he had been to her ever since she was five years old. Joey turned her head to look at her mother, who was struggling to keep her emotions in check, but still managed to nod silently at her, inching closer so she could kiss her temple.
“Does that mean you are breaking the law if you don’t watch Disney movies with me?” the little girl inquired in a joking manner, raising her eyebrow.
“I think that can be one interpretation of it, sure.” Jack laughed.
“I love you, daddy.” she squealed, wrapping her arms around his neck.
“I love you too, sweet girl.”
And just like that, all the pieces in the puzzle were finally assembled. They fit. And the picture was exactly like the one on the box. He was sure of it.

July 19, 2021
Kaiden (kay-den)
We just arrived in Tokyo after our Pre Olympics training camp in Nara. Even though I slept the entire time we were traveling, I'm still exhausted, so it's a good thing our coaches offered us a day off tomorrow. I'm ecstatic to be participating in the Olympics. I'm not sure if I'll start any games, but I'm happy to be a substitute when my team needs me. My seniors are incredible; they have supported me when I was first called up to the senior team. This Olympics, all I care about is gaining experience with my teammates.
“Hey Kai, let’s go explore the village with the others!” my ‘mom’, Chloe Logarzo, said touching my shoulder to divert my focus away from stowing my belongings
“But I still have a lot of things to put away and besides I’m really tired. Do I really have to go with you guys?” I answered her while pouting and scrunching my eyebrows together.
“You’re cute, almost gave in. But you know we’re leaving the village after a few days because we’re gonna transfer to another venue for the final group game right? Don’t take everything out of your bags, you're the only one that’s gonna have a hard time.”
“Okay, I guess my signature pout did not work.” I said with a shrug of my shoulders. I straightened my face and nodded, indicating that I would be joining them.
Chloe tugged me towards the lift entrance with her right arm across my shoulders. We went downstairs and waited outside our apartment for our other teammates so that we could explore the village together.
“Hey bitches!” Sam Kerr yelled at us while obnoxiously flailing both of her hands. Steph Catley tried to put Sam's hand down because a number of people were looking at her; while Emily Van Egmond slapped her mouth. Soon after, Ellie Carpenter and Caitlin Foord trailed behind the three of them.
“Where are the others?” Chloe asked the five of them after observing that no one was following them anymore.
“They said they’ll follow behind.” Ellie, who was engrossed in her phone, answered. I went up to Ellie to see what she was up to because the other four women continued bickering as we were walking.
“What’re you doing?” I asked Ellie, leaning in close enough to see her phone screen.
“On Bumble trying to look for hot Olympic athletes.” Ellie replied in hushed tones, fearful that the older women would hear her. I just chuckled and wrapped my arms around her shoulders.
“Don’t curse in front of the kids!” Ellie and I heard Emily say behind us scolding Sam.
“You guys know we’re not kids anymore right? I’m like 19 and Ellie’s 21.” I said.
“But you’re still our baby!” Steph stated, and I just rolled my eyes as she said it. I'm not sure if I enjoy it or not that they continue to treat me like a child. It can work in my favor sometimes because they do what I want, but when I want to do 'adult things,' they always become protective for some reason.
"Yeah, right. Please, let's go eat first; I'm starving. I think the last meal I ate was breakfast." I remarked, dragging Ellie after me as I hurriedly proceeded towards the dining hall, oblivious to the group of athletes from various countries who were walking around us.
"Do you know how to get to the dining hall?" Ellie inquired from beside me, her right hand now held in my left.
I looked back at her while still walking and said, “I’m sure it’s this- ow!” I crashed on someone's back and came to a halt; Ellie almost collided with me since I was dragging her.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going," I apologized to the girl.
“It’s alright. I also wasn’t aware of my surroundings.” she replied with a smile. She caught a sight of my hands intertwined with Ellie's, which I noticed. She looked up and smiled at Ellie and Ellie returned one back.
“Uhm, do you possibly know the way to the dining hall?” I awkwardly asked her since I think she was also on her way there.
“Yeah! I'm on my way there. Do you want to walk with me?" she asked me and Ellie. I turned around to check whether Chloe and the others were following us, but I was dismayed to see that they weren't. I returned my gaze to Ellie, who was watching the person I had collided with. I tugged on her hand to see whether she agreed to go with the stranger. Ellie gave me a little nod and let go of my hand.
“Sure! I can’t see our teammates behind us and we don’t want to get lost. We should just meet them there." I replied, gazing down at her a little because I was a few inches taller. We began going in the direction of the dining hall, with her leading the way. Ellie was standing right alongside me, observing the woman in front of us.
"What sport do you guys play?" she inquired, her gaze returning to us as she listened to my response.
"Footy for Team Australia." I said, peering into her light brown eyes.
Before responding, she returned her gaze ahead of her. “Oh! So you're on the same team as Sam Kerr?" I was taken aback when I heard that, but not for long because I knew our skipper is a well-known football player all over the world. Nonetheless, I asked how she knew Sammy.
“Yeah, how’d you know her?” She looked me in the eyes once more before responding,
"My cousin’s also a football player. I know Sam since I've watched a couple of games." I nodded and didn't press the issue any further because I realized we were getting close to the hall.
"This is it," she said as we approached the doors. "Are you guys waiting for your teammates to arrive before you come inside? I think mine are already here.” She questioned and informed me at the same time.
"We should, but I still don't know your name or what event you're participating in. I'd like to support you." I told her with a smile.
She smiled brightly at me. "My name is Raegan, I swim for Team USA." she said, shaking my hand.
"Oh, Team USA!" I exclaim. "I’m Kaiden, and this is Ellie." Ellie extended her hand to Raegan to shake.
"It's great to meet you, Raegan, and thank you for accompanying us to the hall. You'll undoubtedly have a tough time against Team Australia, but I'll be rooting for you."
"That's cute," she remarked with a playful smirk. "We'll see about that." Before entering the hall she looked back at Ellie and me and said, “It was also nice to meet you guys too!"
“Ells, why were you like gawking at Raegan?” I looked back at Ellie and questioned her after Raegan went into the dining hall.
“Girl I was not gawking at her,” she answered with an eye roll. “She looks familiar. I can’t tell where I saw her before though.” Ellie’s phone rang after she told me why she was looking at Raegan.
“Hey, Cait.” I heard Ellie say, letting me know that it was Caitlin who was calling her.
“Yeah, just in front of the right-side entrance.” I was trying to look for them while Ellie was talking to Caitlin. As I spotted Emily’s short ponytail I raised my hands so they could see us. Chloe spotted us first and ran towards me.
“Why didn't you two wait for us? What would happen if you both got lost? " Chloe questioned us right away.
"It's fine, Chlo, and we met someone on the way here. She helped us in getting here without getting lost." I tried to hide my smile but failed miserably because Chloe saw and teasingly smiled at me. I looked at her sternly and signaled her to keep her mouth shut.
"Just for now, Chlo?" I pleaded with her. She gave me a nod of her head. I adore Chloe for this reason. She simply understands what I'm thinking and feeling, and she always respects my decisions. She's a little protective of me, but I don't mind. We went inside together after we had all gathered at the entrance to eat.

Raegan (ray-gan)
Oh my gosh. Did I just meet Kaiden fucking Moore? The Kaiden Alexandre Moore (yes I know her middle name), the girl I've had a crush on for the past year? I believe I did, and I'm currently floating on cloud nine. I'm not sure how I kept my calm as we were talking and heading towards the dining hall together!
When I walked into the hall, I dialed my best friend and teammate Emma's number, and she answered on the fifth ring. “Oh my gosh! Where are you? I just met-oh my gosh I can’t do this over the phone!” I said when she picked up.
"We're near the Filipino food bar because we figured you'd want to eat Filo food. Who did you meet, though? " Emma calmly said, as I examined the map on the side of the doors to determine where they were.
“I’ll tell you in person, oh my gosh I don’t even know how I managed my cool. Can you stand and wave your hand? I'm on the escalator and I can already see the food bar, but not you guys." As I approached the top of the escalator, I surveyed the hall for Emma, who was standing and waving her hand to attract my attention. I dashed up the remaining stairwells till I reached her.
“You know you could’ve walked right?” I heard Emma exclaim as I approached her. “I-i just met Kai-Kaiden Moore.” I told Emma while catching my breath. I saw her scrunch her eyebrows but smile at me after she realized what I said. Emma drew me down to a chair and demanded that I tell her everything that had happened during our encounter. I told her about how Kaiden had bumped my back and how I tried to hide my surprise when I realized it was my crush who had done it.
After informing Emma what had happened, I took her to the food bar with me so I could get something to eat. “I was about to scream at her when she bumped into me because I was still upset at you for leaving me in our room. But oh my gosh I don’t know what to say. I didn't expect to meet her here.” I told Emma while we waited in line at the food bar.
“I’m sorry about that. I didn't want to wake you up because you were sleeping soundly and I didn't want to dist—wait, don't you follow her on Instagram? " Emma inquired, interrupting her explanation. Gosh, she’s so random sometimes.
"Yeah, I follow her. Why? What's wrong with that?" I replied. "By the way, she was with Ellie when I saw her, and they were holding hands."
"What's wrong with that? Rae! Are you kidding?!? She'll think you're odd because you pretended you didn't know her. You need to unfollow her or it'll be awkward the next time you see each other." she reasoned, “And Ellie? Ellie who? Carpenter?”
"If we see each other again and yeah, Ellie Carpenter, their hands were like, linked." I remarked, a bit confused and sad. I took my phone from my back pocket, went to Kaiden’s profile but contemplated on unfollowing her or not.
"Well, the odds of you seeing her again are high, you know, considering Kelley's playing against them; aren't you planning to watch that game?" Emma inquired as I surveyed the food bar for possible options. I saw grilled pork and it made my mouth water, but I decided to go with the fried tilapia because I had a race coming up in a few days. Of course, I got some rice with it and a delicious squash soup.
“Yeah, I am. Our teammates are only swimming heats that afternoon and we would be done with our event before the 27th so I decided to come and support my dear cousin. Do you want to come with me?” I answered Emma after I got out of line with my food.
“Are you sure you’re coming for Kelley and not dear Kaiden?” Emma teased, a knowing grin on her face. I pretended not to hear what she said and continued walking towards where our other teammates were. I sat down in front of Katie, the youngest swimmer out of all of us.
“Hey Katie! How’s your day so far?” I asked her so that I could continue avoiding Emma’s question. I think Katie knew what I was doing because she was holding a laugh in while she gave me her answer.
“Good! So excited to be here! How about you Rae?” She questioned me back. I smiled a bit but that faded when Emma answered for me.
“She met Kaiden!” Emma blurted out. Everyone at our table heard what she said and looked at the both of us. Some of them gave me teasing gazes and smirks. I immediately felt my face heat up. I felt my phone vibrate saving me from this embarrassing moment caused by my best friend. I took my phone out and saw that Kelley was calling me. I excused myself and went out to the outdoor seating area of the food hall to answer Kelley’s call.
“Oh my gosh! Thank you for saving me from that embarrassing moment!” I told Kelley.
“Why what happened? You seem a bit nervous. You’re on speaker by the way. Alex is here” I don’t lie to Kelley, so I was contemplating if I was going to answer her question. But in the end, I took a deep breath before revealing the reason behind the nervousness in my voice.
“I met Kaiden before lunch today.” I kind of whispered to the phone afraid that people would hear what I just revealed to Kelley. On the other side of the phone I can hear Kelley trying not to laugh at how I told her what happened.
“Babe!” I heard Alex shout at Kelley, a bit of disappointment in her voice.
“Don’t fucking laugh at me Kelley Maureen! That was the most nervous I’ve been and you know how nervous I get before my races.” I rant out to her. I can hear Alex scolding her a little bit on the other end of the line and I can’t help but smile a little bit about their relationship. “Okay, okay, I’ll stop teasing her now.” Kelley replies to Alex. I heard her shuffling around followed by the door being slid shut. “Sorry Rae, just really love to tease you.”
“I know. I need your opinion, by the way.” I asked her.
“Go on.” She replied.
“Emma said I should unfollow Kaiden on instagram because she’ll think I’m weird. I acted like I didn’t know who she was when she bumped into me.” I said with a sigh. Looking back at our interaction, I really think I was a bit stupid for acting like I didn’t know her. It’s just that I felt an overwhelming feeling in my heart. You know when people say that they have butterflies in their stomach? I felt that but I felt all those butterflies fluttering their wings around my heart.
“Well, she can just think that you followed her after your interaction earlier. From what I've heard from Sam she’s really not that big into social media she probably won’t care either way.” I groan at her answer. I really feel stupid right now. I don’t really know how to explain how I feel. I’ve had a big freakin’ crush on that girl for the past year. I never thought I would meet her even though the odds are huge with KELLEY O’HARA being my cousin. Am I in a state of gay panic?!?
“Kels I think I’m gay panicking.” I tell her as I feel my heart beat faster. I could feel my breathing pick up a bit and Kelley noticed it too.
“Okay, Rae calm down. Deep breaths for me please I don’t want you to go into a full on panic attack. Inhale, Exhale.” I followed her instructions. “That's it, very good sweetie. Again. Inhale, Exhale.” It took a while but I felt myself calm down a bit.
“Thanks Kel. You’re the best cousin ever. I might have to end this call now though I still haven’t finished eating my lunch. I’ll see you soon.” I heard Kelley sigh a breath of relief after hearing normalcy in my voice.
“Don’t let Erin and Jerry hear you say that. Love you kid! See you soon!” I laughed and ended the call with a sigh of relief.
*ping*
[raegan.gvr]: Kaiden Moore (kai.mooreee) started following you.
Oh. I guess it’s too late to unfollow her now.

Stewie: "You never doubt UConn or what we can do. Being at the game in January against Notre Dame, they were struggling with their depth and a lot of people needed to step up. You fast-forward to what we've seen in March and now April, I'm really proud of what they've been able to accomplish getting to this point. This is why they play. This is why they've practiced since September. I'm excited to see them leave it all on the court."
DT: "You know, there's always a moment during a season that's a reality check. For that team, that Notre Dame loss was the reality check in the sense that, 'No one is going to come to rescue you. No one is going to feel sorry for you. No one is going to care that everyone's hurt. No one cares that you have Connecticut on your jersey.' But you have to go out there and be that. Think about that moment for them — big game, big rivalry, big history against Notre Dame. They felt all that and it hurt them. It's funny, I spoke to Paige on Wednesday and she said, 'I don't want Notre Dame to happen again.' Trust me, I've had that in my life, too."
Stewie: "What Geno's been dealing with these last few years is with a lot of injuries. When I think about the injuries we dealt with in my four years it was really in my sophomore year when we had like six players at one point. Getting the players to fight, to continue to buy in to what they want to do, to understand why you're here, deal with that pressure to continue to find that greatness and chase perfection is what it's about. With this group it's different because they're fighting for each other. They're playing for the ones that can't. That's equally important. Those injured players want to be on the court but they want to make sure they continue to give out energy the best they can."
DT: "When Coach is in these situations, he digs in harder. I think the players felt that earlier in the year and they didn't like it. But he's doing it for a reason. He's doing it for Friday night. There will be 20,000 people in the building, playing against the hottest player in the country and every 3 will feel like a bomb. Are you going to be prepared for that? That's what he has done month by month. It's not easy because when Coach brings the heat it's the most pressure you'll feel as a human being, forget as a basketball player. Having to perform, having to live up to it, having to keep your head and be a great teammate, it's a life lesson you carry with you forever."
Stewie: "Paige is becoming more and more comfortable. In the beginning of the season she's getting the rust out a little bit after not playing for a year. Now she's taking matters into her own hands whether it's offensively or defensively. She's doing whatever she needs to for her team to win. At the end of the game she wants the ball in her hands offensively. Defensively, she was out there the other night guarding JuJu Watkins. That's tiring. But she didn't care. I watch Paige in a few different ways. I watch it as a fan because I want to cheer on my Huskies. But also from knowing all of the pressure that is behind Paige and the way she's able to perform her best under that pressure. That's what makes her great. To have that similarity, I miss being able to compete in March Madness. But watching her brings that back to me."
DT: "I just have so much respect for her. She could easily average 40 points per game. Instead, she's out there making sure that her teammates know that she trusts them. That's why they're here. Paige trusts every single one of her teammates at any given moment. Then in those big moments, greatness comes out. Two years ago, Paige was the best player in the world at her age. And now she's there again. It does take awhile to come back from injury. At the beginning of the year you'd watch Paige and think, 'She's not the same Paige!' Well, she hasn't played for over a year. The game of basketball is about rhythm, about consistency. When you're not on the court it is hard to have that. You see after four or five months of being on the court, being in rhythm, being in basketball shape, she looks incredible."

My thoughts on the game:
- vlatko didnt rly know what he was doing and he needs to stop being happy with draws
- usa were so lucky portugal hit that post
- more subs earlier please, there were too little too late
- team culture/mentality has changed. these players looked like they were playing to just survive the group
- KO was right to be so pissed. coach kelley when
- usa is fucked against sweden
- they dont fight for the win anymore. they looked as if they gave up in the second half
- this is the first time ive seen the us come out worse after half
- vlatko acts like making subs costs him an arm and a leg
- players arent working well together. theres almost like no communication and a lot of bunching up, hell ertz almost gave her teammate a concussion
- usa’s play was very lackluster. no connection, no finishing, no passion, nothing really was a postive in that game
- there was no urgency which confused the shit out of me. the usa were playing to get out of the group and they didnt even bother pressing portugal. im assuming thats more vlatkos decision and. yikes
- vlatko is drawing his way into losing his job
- you would not assume this team is trying to three-peat
- ref was very confusing and not consistent at all with her calls. roses yellow was very very harsh but a portugeuse player can get away with stepping on sophia smith.
- ref did get mildly better towards the end
- what was going on in midfield after those last subs. sonnett at the eight, andi still in??? jj still in d? so confused
- we need jj in midfield.
- i miss broon, christen, and sammy so bad. i miss the ‘19 team in general
- convinced an average football manager player could do better
- there needed to be better finishing and better balls in. alex’s movement was good first half but she couldnt get on target for her life
- this wasnt worth staying up for
Might add individual player thoughts later

Women's Worlds 2023 Primer
The PHF season may be over, but many of the players we love will be playing in women's worlds this upcoming week alongside their peers from the PWHPA, SDHL, Naisten Liiga, NCAA, Usports, EWHL, and countless other fantatic women's hockey leagues or organizations from around the world!
When: April 5th - April 16th
Where: Brampton, Ontario at CAA Center. Games will be in Eastern time
What Teams are playing:
Group A: Canada, USA, Switzerland, Czechia, Japan
Group B: Germany, Hungary, France, Finland, Sweden
How to Watch:
Canada: TSN will be broadcasting all games in the tournament for Canadians
USA: NHL Network will be broadcasting all of Team USA's and Team Canada's games, but not the rest of the tournament
Finland: Broadcast scheduling here
Germany: German games should be available at MagentaSport (and apparently free!)
France: Sport En France should have at least the French teams games
Sweden: SVT should carry Sweden's games
Switzerland: available to stream at srf.ch
Unfortunately I could not find broadcast information for Czechia, Hungary, or Japan, but that may be a language barrier issue on my end. If this is something you are familiar with please let me know!
Lastly, if you want to watch a game that's not available to you, feel free to message and I can see what I can do to help
Tournament format:
All of Group A makes it to the quarterfinals, so the preliminary games are just seeding for them. The top three seeds in Group B will move on as well. Then, the knock out stage looks like this:
Tumblr media
Below the cut is rosters, notable storylines, and expectations for each team. These are in alphabetical order.
Canada
Roster
Tumblr media
Notable changes: Natalie Spooner comes back after missing time with pregnancy. Danielle Serdachny makes her international senior team debut after having 71 points in 40 games as Colgates captain this year. Claire Thompson returns to the world stage after missing last world championships, comes off a spectacular olympic showing. Potomak is out, despite strong performance last world championship.
Player to watch/other fun things; Sarah Fillier. She has been one of the world's best goal scorers for over two year and, at only 22, will likely only get better
Goals: Win gold again! They've been dominate on the world stage again since the break from the pandemic, working extremely well with their new coach. They are the team to beat with a mix of vets and newcomers
Czechia
Roster
Tumblr media
Notable changes: Klara Peslarova, star goalie for Czechia, is not here due to season ending knee injury. Michaela Hesova (who is only 17 years old!) makes her senior team debut in her place and Kateřina Zechovská comes back to the mix. Tereza Radová is out, Sára Čajanová returns. Klára Jandušíková makes her senior national team debut, one of the few ncaa dIII players to do so!
Players to watch: Tereza Vanišová is coming off a PHF championship where she scored the cup winning goal, and has been one of the Czech republics more creative offensive players that plays with an edge. Natálie Mlýnková just had a breakout year for University of Vermont that saw her have 42 points in 36 games.
Goals: Get a medal. Czechia has risen FAST on the national stage, going from not qualifying to medaling in their first wwc in just a few years. Thanks to a mix of a good core who's been playing together a long time like like Mills/Mrázová/Križová and talented youth like Čajanová, they have cemented themselves at one of the worlds threats.
Finland
Roster; http://leijonat.fi/index.php/maajoukkueet/naisleijonat/2022-23/mm2023/item/45144-naisleijonien-mm-joukkue-julkistettiin-taessae-kokoonpano ( no graphic :-( )
Notable changes: Elisa Holopainen will not play for Finland after a great showing last worlds due to injury. Susanna Tapani, who had five points in 6 worlds games last year, is also not on this roster. Sanni Ahola will make her senior national team debut as a goaltender for Finland. She had a .920 as the starter in St. Cloud state this year and could be interesting as they try to find their next starter. Emilia Kyrkkö is another new goalie, who played in Finland this year but will play at St. Cloud next year. I’d expect Ahola to get more time though. Michelle Karvinen not on roster. Lots of roster shakeup overall.
Players to watch: Noora Tulus has been a national team mainstay for some time, but the last two years she has found another gear. Coming off a club season in Sweden with 56 points in 32 games. Sini Karjalainen had a breakout season in Vermont, will be interested to see if she can translate in the world stage.
Goals:After a rough few tournaments and roster turmoil, and some coaching questions, Finland is trying to get back in Group A and compete for a medal. Competition will be fiercer than ever but they look to prove why they dominated so long.
France
Roster:
Tumblr media
Notable changes: Marion Allemoz, who was the team captain, has retired. Morgane Rihet, who was also an assistant captain and mainstay, is not on the roster. Margot Desvignes makes her senior team debut after some strong showings in Sweden.
Players to watch: Chloe Aurard is /the/ player for this team, being a star over at Northeastern the past few years. Justine Crousy Theode, who plays in the mens division in France, will be interesting to see if she gets any starts. With no clear starting goaltender, the 22 is making her senior team debut after strong performances at the u18 level
Goals: Get their first top division win. After being promoted to Division IA in 2013, they've slowly risen to finally qualify for the primary WWC tournament for the first time since 2019! Despite tournament cancellations from the pandemic, they've kept their momentum as they look to establish themselves as a mainstay in the top division. In 2019, they did not get a win, so they hope to do so this time.
Germany
Roster: https://www.deb-online.de/2023/03/24/frauen-nationalmannschaft-finaler-kader-fuer-weltmeisterschaft-in-brampton-kanada-nominiert/ ( once again no graphic :( )
Notable changes: Going even younger in goal, swapping out lilly Uhrmann for Chiara Schultes, no Tanja Eisenschmid though her sister Nicola is there. We do have university of Maine twins Lilli and Louisa Welke still though!
Player to watch: Nina Jobst-Smith (listed as Katerina) had a breakout year in university of minnesota duluth, with 25 points in 39 games. Sandra Abstreiter is a goaltender who has proven she can steal a game.
Expectations: Similar to hungary below, finish top three in their division, hopefully with two decisive victories, to move on to the semifinals.
Hungary
Roster: https://www.jegkorongszovetseg.hu/noi-valogatott-megvan-a-vb-re-utazo-25-fos-keret
Tumblr media
Notable Changes: Very much a run it back roster with little changes. Like its basically identical to their one from last year
Players to watch: Mira Seregély was already a steady contributor for Hungary, but after a breakout year in University of Maine, we may see her take another step. Same with Taylor Baker, a shutdown defender who had a solid season in montreal this year.
Goals: Finishing top three in Divison B to clinch a semifinal berth. They've done so their past two outings, but last time was on a tiebreaker. The past two tournaments they've only had one win in each preliminary round, so trying to secure two would be big. Keeping the group together to try t build on exisiting chemistry will be key.
Japan:
Roster: https://www.jihf.or.jp/common/img/info/info_20230324_153025.pdf
Notable changes: Similar to Hungary, they are running it back. Most of their changes come from adding some younger players to their forward group, including twin sisters Rio and Riri Noro making their national team debut after strong performances at the u18 level
players to watch: Haruka Toko is forever my answer here as I think she's one of my favorite players to watch in terms of her speed and shot, and she's coming off a season that saw her return to the SDHL and have 27 points in 29 games. Ayaka Hitosato also is coming off a successful first season in the SDHL, and it will be interesting to see how that affects her game.
Goals: make the semifinals! last year was a heartbreaking 2-1 shootout lost in the finals they hope to avenge, and have proven they are capable of it
Sweden:
Tumblr media
Notable changes: Most notably, long time captain Michelle Löwenhielm is not on the roster. Sara Grahn returns after missing some time on the national team, will be interesting to see how they divide time between her and Söderberg. Ebba Berglund, Jessica Adolfsson, and several other no longer on the teams defense after being in the last few tournaments, so going for a new look there.
Player to watch: Maja Nylén Persson has become the #1 defender for the national team at 22 years old and is coming off a stellar SDHL season. Sara Hjalmarsson was over a point per game at providence college this year.
Goals: Win division B and try to make it to the semifinals. After a few rough years due to labor rights issues, the national team is trying to find some stability again and figure out their identity as they develop a young core.
Switzerland
Roster:
Tumblr media
Notable changes: Not many, mostly concentrated in the forward group. Evelina Raselli has retired since last wwc, which is the big one.Sarah Forster makes her return after a strong season in the PHF.
Players to watch: For years, it has been the Lara Stalder and Alina Müller show, rightfully so as they are two of the best hockey players in the world and it is a gift to watch them together. We have also seen young defender Lara Christen have strong defensive performances in the past few tournaments, getting it done on both ends
Goals: Medal for Bronze again, hopefully by improved depth scoring and defense. In the past it has been their top line and Brändli who has carried them, so they hope to supplement their high end talent with a good supporting cast.
USA
Tumblr media
Notable changes: A lot of babies! Players having babies, including Alex Cavallini and Kendall Coyne Schoffield. Then a lot of players who are very young, with 6 players being under 20, including new faces Abbey Levy, Gabbie Hughes, and Tessa Janecke to name a few. Brianna Decker has retired. No Hannah Brandt, grace zumwinkle, jincy dunne, maddie Rooney, or Jesse compher. HUGE shakeups here.
player to watch: Taylor Heise won player of the tournament last year, and has continued to dominate at the NCAA level, she may only be just beginning. Gabbie Hughes makes her senior team debut after several great years at Minnesota Duluth, and will be interesting to see how she fits into the roster.
Goals: Win gold again, especially with a new look with John Wroblewski at coach. He was the coach last tournament, but only had a few months to work with there. They looked improved under him already, so we will see how they look with a full cycle
