so i dont have to explain all the reasons why this year sucked bc u just need to google 2020 and there will be a million reasons why it was TOTAL FUCKING GARBAGE...... usually when so many people collectively say a year sucked ass, i can be like “oh it wasnt *all* bad for me, personally” haha not this year!!!

now i said i dont *have* to explain all the ways 2020 was shitty, but i am gonna explain the biggest reason this year was shitty for me, personally..... it might seem really small in comparison to the ways 2020 was shitty as a whole on like a global scale? but really the biggest reason 2020 sucked ass was i didnt get to really hang out with any of my friends in real life for 9 out of the 12 months of the year.... and really it was like the first week of march that shit hit the fan so like really it was only 2 months that we got to see each other....... if u rmbr p much every previous retrospective post ive made, there was a big emphasis on friends..... ive come to realize that im actually a very *extra*verted person??? despite my overall shyness and homebody attitude, i would always choose to hang out with people over being alone so stay-at-home orders FUCKING SUCKED??? when we all thought it would be over in a couple weeks, maybe a month it was fine?? hey its a good time to draw or catch up on that reading and/or writing i said i was gonna do maybe even start learning to drive?? it’ll be no big deal THEN it wasn’t over in a month and it wasnt gonna BE over anytime soon and no one important was doing anything about it and its an election year and black lives have always mattered and yet everything is so uncertain and

in 2018, i had said that i watched vox’s video on the year in 5 mins and cried... if i watched this year in five minutes, i dont think i would be able to breathe......

SO instead of making myself CRY..... lets try to think about any GOOD things that happened and think about what we can do to make 2021 good for ourselves:

GOOD THINGS THAT HAPPENED:

-i *didn’t* lose my job!! sad that so many others cannot say the same but im trying to make myself feel *better* not WORSE so i got to keep my job and i actually work more hours than before so!!

-i actually *did* learn to drive this year!!!! and im pretty good at it??? for someone that just started this year anyway?? i probably *would* have my DRIVER’S LICENSE right now if it weren’t for a surge in cases in a certain STATE that i happen to live in......... but w/e its fine i get more time to practice and im ~~**DEFINITELY**~~ going pass my test and get my license ~whenever it is that i can reschedule my dmv appt~

lmfao its so funny that last year, i was absolutely *dreading* learning to drive but i so fucking get why everyone was like ‘you need to learn how to drive’ i legit love it so much???? ive always been a car person but that was like purely for the aesthetic but now that i can drive im just....... WOOOW this really is what freedom feels like.... like ik that public transportation is amazing and i will always champion it but nothing beats being purely in control of your destination.... i also wanted to buy myself a car for my birthday even tho i couldnt really drive yet but then sien had to fix smthg on her car and it was EXPENSIVE AF and my mom was like “u dont need to buy a car yet” so i put the brakes [haha] on that... but soon... once i get my license,,, then i will have u my love................. so with that being “my most serious goal of 2020″ im glad i did it

-i was one of lucky ones and got unemployment when i couldn’t work so i have a lot of money saved in the bank??? pls no one steal my identity i wanna use that money to buy myself a car and/or for when we move out 🤞🤞 we’ll just have to wait and seeeeee....................

-i had mentioned playing dnd last year too and thats been going STRONG as hell thank goodness....... we couldnt keep playing in person but when we moved it to online, not only did we actually get to hang out a lot more, we made more friends??? introduced new people to the group?? its so good and in fact probably the only thing that kept me even a little bit sane this year......

-this is more of an honorable mention than an accomplishment but im this 🤏close to catching up with critical role and thats partially thanks to the pandemic lmao sooooo ???

aaaaaaand thats p much it lol i didnt really accomplish any of my other goals bc reasons................. but!!! as cliche as it sounds, with a light at the end of the tunnel, im confident that i can turn that all around this year.... so if 2016 was the year of change, 2017 was the year of getting used to shit, 2018 was the year of getting *too* used to shit and 2019 ended up being the year of friends, 2020 was the year of absolute shit and it doesn’t fucking count....... i learned a lot this year, biggest lesson of all is that life is short and if i were to have died at any point last year, what the fuck would i have to show for it??? so usually i end up giving a theme or name to a year after its done but this time im determined to make 2021 into what i want it to be SO i am declaring this year, the year of our lord 2021, the year of new experiences!!!! what the fuck does that mean you ask? well ill tell you!!! im gonna try new things this year!! make a very pointed effort to do things outside my comfort zone?? and for my goals this year, im going back to my old way of making a huge list of stuff u wanna do and seeing how much i can actuallly accomplish!! now i said theres a light but we really dont know when all this shit will end and life will go “bAcK tO nOrMaL” so whos to say ill get to accomplish any of it? at the same time, there are plenty of stuff on the list that i can do within the pandemic set parameters so!! lets see this list!!

I’ve been in theatre for two years (Varsity class for one year), and have been in 6 shows, four mini acting gigs for the public, and led one musical (Cinderella. A crazy show, that one.)

A birth story

August 6th I had a bi-weekly check up with my OB. 38 weeks. As I sat on the table we chatted. I expressed how my ankles were swelling like balloons and I was taking Tums now daily for the heart-burn. She stated these were both normal signs of nearing the end of pregnancy. She had asked me if I have been experiencing any contractions yet. Besides Braxton Hicks, I had told her I didn’t know what they felt like yet. Nothing uncomfortable or that took my breath away yet. Lastly she asked if I wanted to be checked to see if I was dilated yet. ‘Uh, of course!’ I thought. She checked me and said I was only 1 cm along. I don’t know what I was expecting but I felt disappointed for some reason. I asked her questions about my water breaking, what were the chances. My mom had to have her water broke for her so I wasn't sure what to expect if it had suddenly broke in the middle of the grocery store, you know, like in the movies. She said that if it happens to head to the hospital within 24 hours and they would call her for me. I asked all the questions I needed to and I felt ready to get this baby out. Now it was just a waiting game. My OB gave me a tight hug and said she would see me again next week.

Ugh, fine. I headed to my moms house and went for a walk around the park with my littlest sis. The past week I started walking daily around the park and I also got a yoga ball for home. Sitting on the couch in the middle of summer, 38 weeks pregnant was so uncomfortable. I sat on the ball instead of the couch, rolling my hips and lightly bouncing to make him “drop” so to say. After I came home from my walk, I bounced around and watched some tv, took a picture of my belly in the bathroom, then headed to bed. ;)

I remember waking up around 3:30 am trying to get comfortable in bed, tossing and turning. I got out of bed and checked the couch to see if Ryan was home from work yet. Sure enough he was passed out with the TV still on. I turned everything off and left him to sleep. Sleeping in the bed with me large and in charge, he’d probably be better off in the living room. I went back to bed and googled a contraction calculator app just in case this heartburn feeling wasnt just heartburn. I started timing the tightening of my belly. Start then End. Start, End. I eventually fell asleep.

4:45 am I wake up and roll over. I felt like I had leaked something when moving, so I went to the bathroom to make sure I wasn't still bleeding from earlier at the cervical check. It was clear. Hmmm I thought. I went to the bed to see if a puddle of water was there and there was nothing. I was confused and trying to think. Then water dripped out again as I was standing there.

‘What the… Ok.’ I went and sat on the toilet. ‘Is this my water breaking? I don’t know. Am I having contractions? No, I don’t think so. I don’t know actually. Did I?’ I walked into the living room to wake Ryan up. “Ryan. Ryan. Ryan! I think my water is breaking..” “Are you sure?!” “NO! I am not sure, but I am leaking something when I walk” I am now sitting on the toilet googling this. Besides my water breaking, it says it could also be fluid. And leaking fluid is not good. I called my mom in a nonchalant panic. Ryan was already on the phone with HIS mom. He’s talking over me as I am trying to talk to mine, while staying calm while on the toilet still. We decided heading to the hospital now would ease our panic and I wasn’t sure I was in labor. I seriously thought that I was leaking fluid.

I changed into some sweats (mid August in CA, 38 weeks pregnant, you don't sleep in much clothes) I threw my hair in a pony tail and looked at Ryan. We went to my car and drove in a silent panic to the hospital. When we arrived we had a chipper nurse who checked me in to see if it was my fluid leaking or in fact my water broke. Waiting for the results she asked if we had a name picked out for our baby. I looked at Ryan and he looked at me.... NO! We have no name!!! We argued for 8 months straight on baby names. As she came back with a wheelchair she cheerfully said my water broke and it was time!

“It’s time!” Are two words any pregnant couple would normally be so relieved to hear, but I was so in shock as I really thought I had more time. We get wheeled up to Labor and Delivery and I text my mom those words “it’s time!” Trying to be positive but secretly about to freak out.

At this point I am starting to feel contractions. It just felt like a wave of emotions and tightening over my belly that would last a few minutes then slowly be released back to normal. I was able to make it through them but knew I wanted an epidural for if I couldn’t handle it. The anesthesiologist came in and prepped me for the epidural. I remember this feeling like the worst part of it all. I had to sit up and hutch over making my back shaped like a curve. He stressed to me to be completely still and not to move so that he wouldn't miss his target. This automatically freaked me out. I was having contractions, and on top of that one of the medications you are hooked up to on the IV makes you have the shakes. My teeth were shivering it was so uncontrollable. Yet I had to stay very still. He told me if I didn’t calm down that he would have to come back later. (I might have been crying a little bit at this point as well as the shaking lol)

Fast forward I am now resting comfortable in my hospital bed, free from the pain all hooked up to the pain meds. My nurse tells me to get some rest. What seemed like an hour later, I was having intense contractions. My nurse would tell me if I needed more to the epidural to push a button and it would drip to my IV. I pushed it and pushed it and still was feeling a lot going on. She called my anesthesiologist to double check everything, but he was in a surgery and was not able to come up. I kept feeling an intense desire to push and my nurse would tell me not to. Try not to push you aren't dilated yet, keep him in there and allow him to make his was down to you then you would push. She leaves me to work though the contractions, and I tell her again “I need to push!” She said she would check again but its not time. She pokes around down there and pop’s her head up, “Yep, its time to push”

My OB comes strolling in the room. What a relief to see her. She’s wearing a little dress above her knees, heels, and throws her doctor jacket on. She jokes with me how she saw me that day! She’s putting her hair net over her head, they are lowering my bed, and taking the bottom half of the bed off. The lights turn off and only the overhead doctors light is on beaming at my hoo-ha. I am sweating, it is so hot. They had their air conditioning brake at this very moment, and the nurses were running me cold ice towels for my head, Ryan switching them out for a cold one each time a nurse came in. (I think it eventually came back on, or the back up generator came on, however this moment felt like a lifetime, its funny how in all the chaos this is what I remember)

It was time to get him out. I had two nurses in the room, one holding my leg, the other assisting my OB, and Ryan in there. It was quiet and calm in there. Giving birth is just so explainable. One minute your body feels at rest, and clam. The next it feels like a big wave in in the ocean, when all the water goes back, it raises to form a tall wave, and then it crashes into the sand and gets less intense as it slowly comes back down the shore. That’s how my contractions felt. like a wave. It would be so unbearable and just when you caught on and thought to yourself WTF, I can’t do this, it would release and ease up and go away. The doctor would say take a deep breath while the nurse would so politely yet sternly count to 10 slowly. Like 1, (Mississippi) 2, (Mississippi) ..and my body in such a bad-ass way, knew to push and hold that push for the 10 seconds. Then a small break, take a breather, and then again until this baby comes out. I have learned that your body goes into labor knowing exactly what to do. Even if you don’t think it does. When other women say your body knows what to do, listen to your body, they are all right. A wave would come, I’d take a deep breath, and pusshhhh and slowly little by little the little bean makes it’s way down your canal. I do remember coming to a point where I screamed I couldn’t do it anymore. It was starting to hurt too badly. I think this was when the biggest width of his head was coming out. My doctor asked Ryan if he wanted to see the head and he said no he didn't want to see. haha. She asked Ryan to count for me. I think hearing his voice instead of the nurse, made a huge impact. Gave it a shift in energy, I felt more empowered hearing him like it was him and I doing this together. A few more pushes and out he came!

August 7, 2015 at 3:45 pm, weighing 7 lbs, 8 oz, 21 inches long- whaling loud and clear they plop him right on my chest. It happened so fast, I didn’t know what to do. I kept calling out for Ryan like is he seeing this, and he was like I am right here, I’m right here. They rubbed him down and threw a beanie on him and wrapped him up. I don’t remember watching Ryan cut the umbilical cord, but he says he did. After I was all sewed up, and admiring my sweet baby boy, they asked me what his name was. I told our doctor we were deciding between Remy and Maverick and she took a long look at him. She said if it was any help she delivered two Mavericks within the last month. Not one named Remy.

Remy was so clam, and gentle in the womb. He was sweet. And different. So we went with that. Jack was Ryan’s grandfathers name. We wanted to give it a fresh twist and spelled it Jax. And that was that. We didn’t think to much about it. I think we were high on the baby dust and after arguing 9 months over a name it was so fast and simple once we laid eyes on him.

He had huge chubby round cheeks, and small Asian eyes. Lot’s of dark black hair and nostrils identical to Ryan. Tan skin and latched on perfectly.

Remy has always made life being his mom so easy for me. Everyone tells me how lucky I am to have him be so easy going, but I thank him for making me the lucky one.

Three comics made the favourites list this week. Made Men #1 from Paul Tobin and Arjuna Susini, Seven to Eternity #9 by Rick Remender and Jerome Opeña, and Star Wars: Captain Phasma #1 by Kelly Thompson and Marco Checchetto. Published by Oni Press, Image, and Marvel respectively.

Made Men #1 is a mix of a crime drama and horror, introducing us to the world of Jutte Shelley (nee Frankenstein), a cop who tried to leave behind a world of monsters.

While the story did grab me, what really made this book stand out was the artwork by Arjuna Susini. He has a style I’ve been seeing pop up more again recently, that shows a certain influence by Bernie Wrightson, but also artists like Richard Case, Bill Sienkiewicz, Sam Kieth, and Kelley Jones, and it’s just wonderful. Dark and evocative with nice use of cross-hatching and some hard angles, Susini probably veers closer to the Richard Case end of the spectrum. Still realistic and not nearly as stylized as Kieth or Jones. It’s very impressive work.

The introductory narrative from Paul Tobin, gives us a first-person narration by Jutte that is fairly direct, clinical, and visceral in its description of what’s going on and allows for a distinct window into the procedural way her mind works. It really aids in driving home the cop drama aspect to the story and provides an interesting lens to perceive the carnage.

Needs more talking cats, though.

Seven to Eternity #9 concludes the second story-arc of the series. And hoo, is it a doozy.

In many ways, this series has been telling the story of the fall of a hero. Or at least someone who sets out in the first issue on what seems like a hero’s journey. What Rick Remender really seems to be writing about is how the protagonist, Adam Osidis, has become potentially compromised and has begun a spiral into selfishness over the steadfastness of his father.

Especially as a large part of this issue is a discussion on the nature of good and evil, and of how whispers and rumours--the weapons of Adam’s antagonist and current travelling companion/hostage, the Mud King--and thereby perception shape the reality of an individual. And then, of course, there’s a climactic magic battle.

All of it made beautiful by Jerome Opeña and Matt Hollingsworth. It’s nice to see Opeña back after a couple issues by James Harren--to his credit knocked it out of the park as well--as this series remains what’s probably the best looking book on the shelves.

The only downside to this issue is that we now have to wait until February 2018 before the series starts up again.

Star Wars: Captain Phasma #1, or more accurately the unwieldy title of Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Star Wars: Captain Phasma, is a direct continuation from Star Wars: The Force Awakens chronicling what happened to Captain Phasma, the First Order Stormtrooper played by Gwendoline Christie in the film, in the destruction of the Starkiller Base. Wacky hijinks ensue.

Okay, maybe not.

Although certainly a matter of coincidence in timing, Kelly Thompson’s narration for Captain Phasma serves as an interesting comparison to Tobin’s in Made Men. It too is clinical and succinct, but where Jutte is no nonsense and direct in her observations, Phasma is cold and emotionless. Both characters adhere to a certain type of ruthlessness, but one is seeking vengeance for a wrong-doing and the other is taking a pathological approach to covering her tracks. It’s interesting to see the difference in a similar narrative approach in how it relates to ostensibly a hero (Jutte) and a villain (Phasma).

Beyond just that comparison, this first issue is compelling in its own right. There’s a nice bit of humour in juxtaposition of Phasma’s log recording of the events of the destruction of Starkiller Base and what was actually going on, deadpanning much of the explosions.

This issue also features what is probably the most gorgeous art in one of Marvel’s Star Wars titles yet. And that’s saying a bit since they’ve had artists such as Kev Walker, Phil Noto, and Salvador Larroca working on them. The art here from Marco Checchetto and Andres Mossa is just breathtaking.

Quick Bits:

All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #9 begins telling the story of what exactly happened to Groot to make him into Baby Groot at the beginning of this volume. Aside from corporate synergy with the second Guardians of the Galaxy film that also saw the rest of the team more reflect their cinema brethren. The answer Gerry Duggan gives in the story is interesting, adding a new wrinkle to the Guardians’ tapestry.

Astonishing X-Men #3 continues the Shadow King’s game with the X-Men trapped in the Astral Plane, this time focusing mainly on Old Man Logan. Ed McGuinness tackles the art this issue and I’m still wondering about how the overall arc will read in one go. Unlike the past two issues, though, this one doesn’t necessarily play to McGuinness’ strengths. The art is still good, but I would have expected something more bombastic or action-oriented from the story.

Black Bolt #5, like every issue preceding it, features some excellence in storytelling from Saladin Ahmed and Christian Ward. There’s also a nice four-page sequence illustrated by Frazer Irving that gives a summary of Lockjaw’s relationship with Black Bolt.

Daredevil #26 kicks off the three-part Land of the Blind story-arc with the return of Ron Garney on art, delivering some absolutely gorgeous work.

Elsewhere #2 continues Amelia’s Adventures in Wonderland, with the revelation that she’s apparently going to end this world and summarily sent to be executed. Jay Faerber’s story is still a bit of a slow burn in introducing this world, its people, and what exactly is going on, but it remains interesting.

Giant Days #30 deals with the fallout of Ingrid and Daisy’s relationship. It’s a funny, but sometimes accurate, look at how a first love--or even just a new love--can affect a broader friendship dynamic.

Hawkeye #10 reminds you that you should be reading the series if just for Leonardo Romero’s artwork. Even if the story from Kelly Thompson wasn’t entertaining in its own right, Romero’s visual storytelling from page layouts to character work to panel transitions is just a visual treat. But the overall story is entertaining too, with some fun dialogue, humour, and an interesting take to see Madame Masque as Not-Kate.

Royals #7 continues Al Ewing’s trip through obscure(ish) Marvel cosmic and Inhuman continuity, deftly weaving past tales into his ongoing narrative that seems to be his signature. Not to mention some great character moments and development.

Scales & Scoundrels #1 was very nearly my fourth favourite book of the week, it’s a damn impressive debut. Sebastian Girner has offered up another winner after his Shirtless Bear-Fighter a scant few week ago. As its title suggests, this is a fantasy book taking after traditional Dungeons & Dragons tropes, but like other recent series like Night’s Dominion and Ladycastle, it seems primed to turn some of those conventions on their ear. This issue is full of humour, action, and an interesting protagonist in the titular scoundrel, Luvander.

The art by Galaad is also magical. It’s deceptively simple, reminding me of a more abstract Albert Uderzo, and it propels the story nicely.

Star Wars: Darth Vader #5 is Charles Soule’s third book this week, after Astonishing X-Men and Daredevil, and it’s another solid read. There’s an interesting missed path What If...? in the issue as Vader works to construct his lightsaber. Giuseppe Camuncoli’s artwork is fantastic as usual.

Star Wars Adventures #1 is good all-ages fun. There are two stories here, both written by Cavan Scott. One focusing on a young Rey on Jakku as a continuing story and the other a “Tales from Wild Space” tale of Obi-Wan one and done. If you like Star Wars and want to share with your kids, this isn’t a bad choice.

Thor vs. Hulk: Champions of the Universe #1 is a digital original on Comixology and Kindle from Jeremy Whitley and Simone Buonfantino. I’d consider it more light-hearted, out-of-continuity, all ages fun, probably meant to be collected in time for the Thor: Ragnarok release. It features Thor Odinson and Bruce Banner, so if you’re missing the classics, this is a good get.

Venomverse #1 is every bit as good as the preceding Edge of Venomverse mini-series of one-and-done stories introducing some of the players in this event. Cullen Bunn and Iban Coello deliver an entertaining first chapter here, setting up not just a playground for alternate Venoms, but also a series of adversaries in ever more alternate Poisons.

The Woods #35 has all of the chickens coming home to roost. This penultimate issue of James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas’ series is epic. After this, I can’t wait for the conclusion.
