As far as you’re concerned, Zhongli is the closest thing to perfection a man could ever be. Except for one very minor detail. He cannot, for the life of him, use a phone.

Which could be blamed on his 30,000 year old android, with a screen that barely functions and a cracked camera, and you really can't let him go out like that. So one day, as an advance on your anniversary gift for him, you decide to welcome him to the wonderful world of the iPhone.

“What’s this?” Zhongli says, opening the box carefully. “What have I done to warrant such a gift?” he holds the phone in his hands as if it’s a baby chick—you bought him one of the bigger phones, knowing his hands are large, and even still he could do with something bigger.

“You dropped your phone in the toilet and I can’t allow you to continue using it. You have to understand.” You grin. “So I got you a new one that actually works and when you tap the screen, it actually registers it.”

Zhongli looks at you with gratitude but also an inkling of confusion. What’s he going to do with this fancy, characterless lump of metal that he couldn't do with his old phone? “I appreciate this, my love, I really do. But I don’t know if this is going to be as good of an idea as you think it is.”

You scoff, pulling him into a hug. “Zhongli, I would like to actually hear my husband when I call him. I would like to understand the texts he sends to me. And I would also like to send him pictures of cute cats on Instagram.”

And of course, Zhongli couldn’t possibly deny you anything you ask of him, so he agrees to try to navigate this new phone with as much positivity and faith as he can possibly muster.

In the few weeks since you bought him the phone, he has managed to:

(1) Lock himself out of it. For a whole week. You asked him how he managed to do that and he didn’t seem too sure as to what he’d done. So you asked him if you could know his password and promised only to use it in situations like this. (And promptly cried when you realised his password was your birthday.)

(2) Get his email hacked. He’d approached you with excitement, saying: “Dear, look. I got an email saying I’ve won a Macbook.” To which you replied: “You can barely use your phone, we might need to leave the macbook on the back burner for a while. Who sent the email?”. The email was sent by [email protected] and contained a link, which Zhongli had happily pressed. And thus, his email was lost to the grips of hackers.

(3) Find the dictation and voice note feature, which is great. He gives you encyclopaedic updates to his day, which you read or listen to with genuine enthusiasm. This was what you bought him the phone for at the end of the day, right? The extra chance to connect with your husband?

(4) Get into the habit of sending you pictures of things that make him happy or that remind him of you. Which is essentially the same thing as far as he is concerned. You’ve also got used to sending them back.

(5) Make an Instagram account. He’s not great at it, but with some guidance, he manages to post some of the pictures he sends you.

(6) Accidentally message the group chat (you, Xiao, Ganyu, Madame Ping and some others use it to invite each other to dignified tea parties and movie marathons) his shopping list. The shopping list included all the things he was getting for you as part of your anniversary gift, so Xiao had to teach him how to delete the message so you wouldn’t see it.

But by the time your next anniversary comes around, he’s actually really good with it—he can use instagram better than you can (though he read the terms and conditions from start to finish and became very careful about how he uses it), orders things from amazon at least three times a week, and has a facebook group for fellow birdwatchers with about two hundred people in it.

Yes, he has all of his icons and text at the largest size possible, and yes, he refuses to use TikTok and favours Instagram reels, but when he’s on work trips or you’re visiting friends elsewhere in the world, it’s nice to be able to video call him and not feel as distant as you used to.

“I think this phone might have been the best gift you’ve ever gotten me, dearest.” he says one night, after discovering the kindle app, where he can find all the classic novels he loves so much without having to clear out bookshelf space.

You sit in bed together, simply talking about your respective days, both your phones banished to charge in another room. Of course, being able to use a phone doesn’t mean that you should at all times—the phone banishment rule had initially just existed for you, but the rules had to accommodate the new technical whiz in the house.

“What about the gift that is me?” you counter, nuzzling into his chest gleefully. He kisses you deeply, a smile on his lips as he pulls away.

“Nothing on this earth is better than the gift that is you.”

“Not even your group of birdwatchers?”

“I did get to see a wonderful example of a nearly extinct sparrow with beautiful colouring last week,” he teases. “But no, they could never be better than my beloved.”

Threads, Meta's new social media app, has signed up 100 million new users less than a week since its launch last Wednesday, making it the fastest-growing app in history.

Like other social media apps, users probably barely scanned − or skipped − the terms and conditions for what information Threads can collect, share and sell about them.

Meta probably already had a lot of information about users because Threads is built upon its Instagram platform.

So how much does Threads already know about you, and what can it do with that data? Here are a few reasons to be concerned about your privacy.

What information does Threads collect?

Social media platforms monetize user data by selling relevant ads based on your location and activity, but, along with the usual app privacy requests like browsing history and location data, Threads also asks for financial information, health and fitness data, diagnostics and a nefarious-sounding "sensitive info."

Many users have voiced concern over Threads for its 14-point list of data permissions you're granting Meta to use the app. Twitter, by comparison, has 10 of these.

"I would say it's at the outer boundaries of what's usually expected, which is to be expected from its connection to Facebook, a brand long known for being especially hungry to take in user data and commercialize it in different ways," says Dan Ackerman, the new editor-in-chief at Gizmodo, a leading technology, science and culture news publication.

Android users can toggle off some of the data requests from the app, while the Apple App Store is "more take-it-or-leave it," Ackerman said.

"It also doesn't help that there's no browser-based fully functional version of Threads right now, and so you have to use the app version," he said.

Meta declined my request for comment and clarification.

Is Threads data collection worse than Twitter?

It's not necessarily malicious, suggests Tim Bajarin, a veteran technology analyst and Chairman of the San Jose, California-based market research firm Creative Strategies. "Users should know this Threads data list is pulled directly from Instagram, and it's all tied to their advertising engine when they start to monetize Threads.

"When you sign off on financial info, for example, they're not looking at your bank statements or anything," Bajarin said.

Rather, Threads collects what you're posting about and liking, where you are, and whether you bought something through a third-party site, app or game you logged into using your connected Facebook/Instagram ID (usually to avoid creating a new password altogether).

Bajarin said users are granting Meta access for future advertising.

"Meta isn't giving you a free app out of the goodness of their heart − they're there to make money, which is mostly from advertising."

Threads can collect and save this information, and the data can also be shared with third-party services that connect to your Threads profile.

Can you deactivate Threads?

Yes, but you cannot delete it without also deleting Instagram, Bajarin said.

"Meta built (Threads) on the Instagram infrastructure, on top of the program itself, and so it would be very difficult to uninstall one and not both – at least the way it's engineered today. ... They could eventually be spun out to be completely separate apps," Bajarin said.

To deactivate (but not delete) your Threads account, Adam Mosseri − the Instagram boss who now spearheads the Threads app – says you can choose to hide your Threads profile and content, delete individual Threads posts and set your profile to private, as reported by USA TODAY contributor Jennifer Jolly.

"Threads is powered by Instagram, so right now it's just one account, but we're looking into a way to delete your Threads account separately,” he posted.

Ackerman said the fact Threads is built on Instagram is actually a boon for Meta and users, "as it's especially easy to sign up for, has no wait list, and is simple to use." But "in order to delete your Threads account after you sign up, you’ll need to delete your Instagram account, as well, which reminds me of the difficulty people had deleting their Facebook accounts in the past, and how there was a lot of fine print about what data Facebook would keep unless you jumped through extra hoops."

Is the Threads app safe?

Threads is asking for more permissions than Twitter, so it boils down to your comfort level.

Though some of the privacy permissions seem ludicrous – granting Threads access to health and activity data and other "sensitive info" on a smartphone just seems wrong – no one is forcing users to install and use Threads or any other social media app that monetizes its free platform by delivering personalized, contextual ads to you.

Threads is available in more than 100 countries, but perhaps it's no surprise it isn't available in the Europe Union just yet: Meta was forced to pay more than $400 million by EU regulators for forcing users to accept targeted ads.

Personally, I am using and enjoying Threads quite a bit but wish there was more clarity about how my data is collected and used. And I'm disappointed Meta declined to clarify things.

I select "Ask not to track" on all iPhone apps to reduce an app's visibility into my web browsing activity, and I have a virtual private network (VPN) on my computer for extra privacy, but perhaps it's true there is nothing truly free in this world – it's just up to each person to decide whether the cost is worth it.

How to Be a Model Pt 1: Starting at Home for Free

Who can be a model? Anyone can be a model! The best way to start modeling is in your house.

Here is what you’ll need:

- A phone with a camera. Make sure the phone has the flip photo feature as well so you can see how you look in the camera.

- Good lighting. Turn on your lights and find your favorite type of lighting that would work well with your phone. If you turn up your portable lights (a lamp, a flashlight, etc) and then face the light to the wall (instead of you), the lighting fills up the room with soft light which is GREAT for modeling shots. Natural light (light from outside) is great for lighting as well. Go outside and see how you like the light there. Explore and experiment. See what lighting works best for you!

- A new email account to send the pictures to, or a Google Drive account to upload the photos from your phone.

- A brand new Instagram for modeling.

Plan a day to shoot yourself. Choose 3-5 outfits and the makeup for that day. Then wait till the day of to take photos.

The Day You Start Phone Camera Modeling

When it is the day of, get your hair and makeup ready and then start taking pictures. CLICK CLICK CLICK. Go to another place in the room. CLICK CLICK CLICK. Go to the wall over there. CLICK CLICK CLICK. Go outside for another pose. CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK. Take all the photos you can until you can’t take it anymore. I go through about 100 shots per outfit or more. Just keep pressing the button!

Upload the photos to your Google Drive, delete them off your phone to make room for new pics, and then change your outfit. Repeat this process for all the outfits and looks until you are DONE with taking photos!

This is modeling and YOU ARE FABULOUS! Welcome to your model life.

When you are finished with all the photos grab a cup of coffee and go through all of your shots. Put every photo on Drive and leave it alone for a couple days UNLESS you see the shot you KNOW you'll put online. Narrow down to one shot per outfit. Email the ones you like of yourself or PLAN on posting on Instagram. Then post. Yay!

Look through and enjoy your beauty. You are beautiful!

For others, keep the photos for a week and then look at all the photos again. Then decide again. While waiting, plan a day and shoot some more! Shots from home can be some of your best shots. Repeat the process. After a time, you can officially determine which photos are best for your IG account.

Wow the books with different looks! Shoot with:

* A different makeup style

* Different outfits and hairstyles

* Different settings

* Art/avant garde concepts (creative with the cosmetics and items in your home)

*,Anything you find on the Internet that you feel would make a good concept.

ADVANCED: Build your own modeling studio with a black or white sheet. Hang it up on the wall on all 4 ends. Make sure it is smooth. This is a good backdrop if you plan on taking pictures. This will also be good for later if you plan on having a photographer come to your home to take pictures (I will show you how to do that in my next blog post.)

ADVANCED: Get a friend to help you and partner up with the friend if you both wish to become models! Take as many pictures as you can. Go for it!

A LIFE SAVER FOR MODELS

There is a feature on Android that I love to use instead of pressing the click button so many times. You just record video and get the shots you want via the video. I record a video of me posing and then I export the frame I want into photos. This is good for still shots and also for videography if you ever wish to record.

Here’s how to do it for Android Camera.

> Set up phone camera

> Press record

> Pose for about 10 minutes

> Play the video to see where you would want the shots. You can write down the numbers on a notepad (0:30 for example) of where you want the shot taken from the video.

> Go to photos

> Play the video

> Go to “Edit”

> Find the shots you want in the camera

> Click the image on the bottom right which says “Export Frame”

> The photo you want should be saved in your Photos folder

For iPhone, Google says File > Export > Export Frame to Pictures. I don’t have an iPhone so hopefully this makes sense.

Exporting to frame makes modeling time faster and easier. You don’t have to click a camera and you can get some really nice stunning shots. Also, if you ever have interest in adding to your video portfolio or to create content like music videos, video reels, etc., you can save the content for your projects and edit them for later.

There are many ways to use the photos you want if you wish to stop here. I use them for my IG Model account, dating sites, etc. Plus I feel good about myself.
