Creature Awaits #231
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Continuing our October series.. "Cute…but Deadly" : )

The Leopard Seal
Scientific Name: Hydrurga leptonyx
Region: The Antarctic
Size: About 7.9'-11.5' (~2.4m-3.5m) long & weigh about 440lb-1,320lb (200kg-600kg)
Interesting Notes: Though adorable at a distance, Leopard Seals can definitely be deadly up close. Though attacks on humans are rare, there are recorded instances of these strong and beautiful creatures attacking inflatable boats and biting, and even dragging, explorers and scientists into dangerous icy waters.. However, not all tales of their encounters with humans end in tragedy. One such story, documented in 2006, involved Paul Nicklen, a photographer for National Geographic, who dove among them, capturing their daily life. A female Leopard Seal took notice of Nicklen, and for four days, took pity on him as "a helpless predator" and brought him food. She brought dead penguins at first and then switched to injured ones - thought to be a way to teach him to hunt for himself. Nicklen stated the experience will "stay with him forever."
You can read more on the experience and see his photography on the National Geographic website here: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/article/140311-paul-nicklen-leopard-seal-photographer-viral

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
When you’re eating on the go, it’s important to make sure you get as much of your meal in your mouth as possible. That’s why leopard seals can open their jaws 160 degrees; the extra width allows them to firmly grasp prey like penguins. Their molars also lock together in such a way that leopard seals can filter krill from the water, making it easy to feed while swimming.

Top 5 sagittal crests in your opinion? I’m biased towards collecting male carnivore mammal skulls I’m a sucker for a big boy with a big crest.
sorry that 3 out of 5 are extinct but they dont make em like they used to :(
5. coatimundi (nasua nasua)
Tumblr media
not the biggest or the baddest, but certainly one of the cutest. don’t feed the wildlife; with a sagittal crest like this they may just take your whole hand!
4. leopard seal (hydrurga leptonyx)
Tumblr media
someone do some bite force testing on this thang. it’s the size of a polar bear with a similar appetite, a faster swim time, and a worse temper. because it doesnt have any arms or paws, the leopard seal has to kill and process its prey by clamping it in these vicegrip jaws and violently shaking it and beating it against the water until it rips apart into bite-sized chunks. i love his scary ass <3
3. bone-crushing dog (epicyon haydeni)
Tumblr media
borophagines, or bone crushing dogs, were the ultimate hipsters. these guys were eating bones before hyenas and bearded vultures made it cool. unfortunately, their niche of big ambush predator was taken over by the stealthier and more efficient big cats, leaving them as a thing of the past.
2. cookie-cutter cat (xenosmilus hodsonae)
Tumblr media
you already know how i feel about this beast. my sona. my favorite. my gigantic bear-cat-shark beloved. could bite a hole in you like an apple.
1. giant beardog (amphicyon major)
Tumblr media
neither a bear nor a dog, but equally distantly related to both as an early-diverging caniform. the amphicyon genus was pivotal in ousting the creodonts as dominant mammalian predators and paving the way for today’s carnivoran empire. look at this thang. looks like he has a fuckin mohawk. ridiculous

oh btw for the ask game hwo did you come up with all of your twst OCs names
How did I Come Up With Their Names! (I mainly looked at name meanings and also the culture that my OCs are from until I found something with a good meaning. I used behindthename & behindthesurname for first and last names)
Ségdae Tonyx
Ségdae is an Old Irish name which means "favourable, fine, good learned" and also an Irish myth. Tonyx is just taken from a part of the scientific name for leopard seals; Hydrurga leptonyx. I was searching for an Irish name, as selkies are from Celtic mythology, and Ségdae felt correct.
Yusra Bashar
Yusra is an Arabic name meaning "wealth, ease", and she is my first TWST OC, and also one of the few that I didn't change from my OG designs. Also, she brings a wealth of love and chaos to her loved ones... and I could short form her name to Yu... Bashar is Arabic/Bengali for "bringing good news". Wealth of good news; kinda what the combo means.
Prem Bashar
Prem means "love, affection" in Sanskrit, and I just thought it really fit him. And when with Yusra, their sibling relationship is nothing but full of ease and affection. Love, bringing good news.
Imani Lechance
Imani means "faith" in Swahili, but was originally derived from Arabic. Lachance is a French nickname for a lucky person, but was turned into a surname. He doesn't really believe in luck, so it's a fun little play on my part. Faith in luck.
Avis Crawford
Avis is just Latin for bird; yeah yeah, I'm shameless. Crawford is an English surname from a place which means "crow river crossing". There wasn't a lot of thought behind their name, I just wanted birb meanings.
Yoon Seok
Yoon is a Korean surname meaning "govern, oversee" and Seok means "stone" or "tin". He likes being in nature and gardens so "oversees stone" felt fitting. Also nickname for Yoo, guilty again
Rayen Vega
Rayen is Mapuche for "flower" but is also used in Latin America. Vega is Spanish for "meadow". So yes, her name means "flower meadow" and I love it.
Eden Ziskind
Eden is Hebrew for "pleasure, delight. Ziskind is an ornamental Yiddish name for "sweet child". Delight sweet child.
For most of them I just browsed until something clicked.
