I wanna know who your favorite vinsmoke sibling is so bad actually please tell me 👀✨

My friend and my brother laughed at me when I told them my favorite Vinsmoke is Niji, and I genuinely was embarrassed that day because I didn't really know much about him at the time (I think I had only watched a few eps of WCI) and it's pretty clear in the show that he's, uh, the worst of the Vinsmokes. And by "the worst" I mean: The one who's portrayed as the worst because he's the most active one when it comes to abuse and supremacism within the family line. Unlike Ichiji (who's more serious) and Yonji (who's more playful, somehow) Niji is the one who has to actually fight for a role in his family and that's why I think he's so fucking annoying all the damn time. I hate him. I love him. I want to hug him. But also I wouldn't mind punching him very, very hard. I have mixed feelings, but yeah, Niji is my favorite Vinsmoke. And you haven't asked why, but I feel the need to do some sort of mini argument about this because I am a very resentful person and I want to show my friend and my brother that Niji is actually a very interesting character!! And my fiancé thinks I just like him because he's hot, and she's right but only like a 20%. Maybe 40%.

I will try to put my thoughts into words, but it's pretty difficult because I have a lot of things to say about this blue evil gremlin.

I like Niji the most because I think he is, between the three brothers, the one who shows feelings and ambitions outside their emotionless selves the most. I know they technically are the same, but I don't think so (btw, please assume I'm not including Reiju in this text because she's canonically different from them and I'm just referring to the brothers).

As I mentioned before, I think Niji is the one brother who is the most annoying and evil because he feels the need to stand out. Ichiji is serious, and calculative and has a secure place in the family. He is the number one, even if Reiju is the oldest (I would like to talk more about how Reiju, being a woman, even if she's the oldest, she's the number 0. Because she is the oldest but she's a woman, so she obviously doesn't and would not be able to wear the number 1 like a man would. She is the oldest and yet, she has less significance in the family line than Ichiji. But, yeah, this is something that has nothing to do with Niji, sorry). Ichiji, like all of his siblings, wants recognition from his father, but he doesn't have to try as hard as the others to be impressive because he is, after all, the oldest. The typical "older sibling in an abusive household who has to deal with all the bullshit to protect their siblings"? That's something Reiju took over. That's Reiju's responsibility as the oldest and the woman. Ichiji literally doesn't have to do anything besides leading the team and being the evil, emotionless machine his father created. That does not mean that I don't think he could be able to develop more feelings, because I think he could and I love the concept of him being the first one to protest against Judge's behavior, but you get me. When you're the oldest brother with an even older sister, your responsibilities are pretty limited. So he doesn't have to be anything but there and himself.

Yonji, on the other hand... He is the youngest. Even younger than Sanji. He doesn't have to try, because Niji and Sanji should be the ones to do so. Little siblings are not expected to do much besides existing because irl parents are usually tired of raising children and they end up either getting neglected or seen as decoration. As a little sibling myself I can confirm that these things affect really badly to your brain growing up, but I got a more Sanji treatment so I can't speak for Yonji here. The thing I can say, though, is that in comparison to Niji, Yonji is just there. He's silly and goofy. He's funny. He's dumb. He has the excuse of being the little one to act that way. Getting lost eating or doing whatever. Even the fact that his powers are more physically focused instead of power/intelligence centered shows that he can just punch away his issues. He's the gym bro of the siblings. Don't expect much from him. <- Thing that's often said about little siblings, btw, and affects real fucking badly in early teenage years. The fact that he's portrayed like that is so on point tbh but after all, they don't have high expectations for him, so little to no effort is everything he does.

Then there's Niji, of course. My favorite. Love him. Hate him. Whatever. Niji is the middle child. And God, do I have to say things about middle siblings.

The thing about Niji is that he actually has to try and make a name for himself in the family because otherwise he'll probably get forgotten. I often wonder if he had that fear of becoming the next Sanji once he "died" (he's the only one genuinely asking if Sanji died on them before Yonji and Ichiji say they don't care) because his role is not as noticeable as the others. Reiju is the woman, Ichiji is the successor, Sanji is the weakling getting bullied (being technically one of the little siblings but still being in a limbo of middle/youngest because the little one is Yonji), and Yonji is the little one. Then... What's Niji?

Niji needs Sanji way more than he's willing to admit, and I love that. I absolutely love how he's written because he constantly shows that he needs Sanji, through both words and actions. He needs him because without Sanji's existence -without Niji being his bully- Niji is nothing but number 2. And there's nothing more frustrating than being the number two when it comes to family hierarchy. Not going to mention every little thing he does, but as I said, I love how well-written he is. He's the sibling Oda uses the most to show the abuse Sanji went through, but that's only because Niji is the only one who needs to do that. Niji is the one to talk to Sanji first, all the damn time. He gets angry when Sanji doesn't respond. He gets angry because Sanji can't be bullied anymore. He gets angry out of fear, in my opinion, because if the weakling can't get abused anymore, then he's not worth anything. If Sanji isn't the third, the second one is left alone. 2 can't fight 1 because 1 has the protection of starting the line. And 2 can't fight 4 because there's a missing link that keeps 2 from 4. So Niji is mad at Sanji because Sanji isn't the same weak crybaby he used to be, and he can't use him anymore to be secure and safe.

That's fucking horrifying when it comes to family hierarchy.

I like Niji because, despite being an asshole, he has reasons to be like that. First of all, because his father literally made him this way. But also, the little feelings he has (selfish emotions, yes, evil. But they're feelings, anyway. Urges. He's supposed to be emotionless and yet he knows how Sanji feels enough to use that to his advantage) are used as a way to feel superior and safe because he feels inferior. I think he's the one showing more emotions out of the three, even if those emotions aren't healthy or good and it's just him being angry all the time. That means that if he has urges and needs like that, even if he doesn't fear his own death, he could end up developing more and more empathy. His type of empathy comes from a place of fear. He feels what Sanji feels. And it's not that he doesn't care (I mean, I am aware that he technically doesn't, but let me dream) but it's just convenient for him not to care and keep bullying him to secure his place in the family.

Also pointing out that I like Niji because, being the one who says he hates Sanji the most, he's the one to protect him with his own body when that scene of the siblings helping Sanji escape happens. The others only clear the way, Niji stays with him. There's a really cool post about this on Niji's tag somewhere!!! I personally think he does this because, as that post said: Niji keeps seeing Sanji as weak, instead of believing in him enough to just clear the way. He protects him because he thinks he can't protect himself. Because he's weak.

And yes, it might sound offensive and emotionless and it doesn't make Niji a better person. But it makes him an older brother. Believing in Sanji would be great, but thinking that he's weak and needs protection after years of projecting on him only shows that the weak one is Niji. That he wants and is willing to protect his brother, too. If he didn't care about his well-being he would've just cleared the way for him, not caring about what could've happened to Sanji. But he goes all the way to help him out and protect him longer than the others did. Idk. I find that a very beautiful way of ending their relationship.

All of this being said, I have to be honest with you: When I said I liked Niji for the first time I only did it because people around me kept saying he was the worst one and it bothered me because I found his design pretty fucking cool. And tbh when he started being an actual character? I loved him even more. Because during WCI he's a fucking asshole but the way he acts towards Sanji is wanting to get a response from him, and I just find that so curious and complex... Like, if he just wanted to be evil he'd be more the Doflamingo type. But Niji looks for a response in Sanji's eyes. He wants to feel powerful because he knows he isn't.

And also, well, he's very cute and I like his hair a lot and he makes me furious sometimes which is great because if a character doesn't make you want to punch him at one point, is he really a good character? Look at him! He deserves to get slapped in the face. But also, I would love to kiss him afterward. What's that Olivia Rodrigo lyric? Ah, yes: "I wanna break his heart, then be the one to stitch it up. Wanna kiss his face with an uppercut." That's how I feel about him.

I really hope it's obvious, with all of this, that "Succession" is one of my favorite TV Shows, because I could go on and on and on (and nobody would listen but idc) about how the Vinsmokes are just the Roy family. Both One Piece and Succession deal with family in which hierarchy is crucial in a very specific and accurate way. It makes me sick. I love it.

Hi.... :] before we get into this I wanna say one (1) thing: I'm pro-Palestine AND (shocker) pro-Israel. I'm hitting a hornets nest tagging this with pro-Palestine when how I view being for Palestine is so drastic to others' views.

Any sort of harassment or antisemitism will be reported and you will be blocked. We don't hate Jews or Israelis here. Also, if you tag this post with "to the river to the sea Palestine will be free" you're ignorant and dunno what the fuck you're saying.

This post is lengthy (imo) and just my personal spew on stuff, it's nothing like...revolutionary lol. I just need to get shit out somehow.

I don't get the anti-Israel crowed like....they know nothing and its so baffling they'll just say shit they don't understand the concept or history of. You can be pro-Israel and hate the Israeli government, you can be pro-Palestine while also realizing that the history is very convoluted and if you did a simple YouTube search about history on Palestine and Israel you'd be more educated. You can be both pro-Israel and pro-Palestine...shocker I know!

I've learned more from YouTube than in history class. I've also learned that antisemitism is very easy to fall into, which is something I knew but didn't understand. Pro-Palestinians I don't doubt actually care, I'd love to think most Pro-Palestinians actually give a fuck about the murders that're happening! The downside is that they're falling and repeating shit the fucking Nazis would say in the name of activism and see NO ISSUE. (Saying "gas the Jews" and holding up Nazi flags is, even in the name of activism, antisemetic.)

I try and not be cynical, but like there's literal dog whistles and antisemetic shit being spoken about and there's signs being put up that says "No Jews" and there's even fucking Tumblr blogs with "Jews DNI" on them. (I've seen them, they're very much real. Most of them have "Zionists DNI" which is usually just a dog whistle to Jews, but I digress.)

Don't get me started on fucking Zionism actually, no one knows what the fuck that is and they claim they do when they don't. It's so brain numbing!

"Go back to where you came from!" that'd be Israel....which you wanna get rid of. That's also what Zionism is btw. Jews are from Israel...please Google things before you open your yapper.

I can only find solace in the Jumblr tag (& similar ones) because they have knowledge about what the fuck is going on and I won't get called a "Zionist Nazi"!

In the face of chaos I will say that studying and my plans to convert one day is the best decision I've ever made; you can't get rid of Jews, no matter how much you want us gone. Reading the Torah, researching about Israel, learning the culture, the food, the language, etc. It's healing and I'm glad to be coming home slowly but surely. Am yisrael chai.

Which catches reader off guard so the twins say because they're the happiest with them compered to Miranda's previous marriages, while their talk she comes home and smiles to herself that the twins approve highly of reader. Cute T^T I could go for some Miranda right about now XD Let’s get into it!

The sun was slowly setting over the bustling streets of New York City as you found yourself sitting at the kitchen table of Miranda’s elegant townhome. The twins were engrossed in their homework as they rapidly fired questions at you.

“Y/N, what’s the area of this triangle?” Caroline asked eagerly, pointing to a diagram in her math textbook.

You smiled, leaning closer to inspect the problem. “Let’s see. Well, to find the area of a triangle, you need to multiply the base by the height and divide it by two.”

As you explained the concept, your mind began to drift. You couldn’t believe how close you were with the girls now. They were hellbent on getting you fired when you first started working for Miranda… But, it had been almost a year now and the two have come to adore you. You and Miranda have grown inseparable also. You two have been dating seriously for the past few months and you’ve never been happier. It feels like everything in your life is falling into place finally.

Lost in your thoughts, you were taken aback when Cassidy suddenly spoke up, breaking the silence. “Hey, Y/N, when are you gonna marry our mom?”

You shot up ramrod straight, your heart skipping a beat and face flushing violently. You looked at the twins with wide eyes, unable to comprehend the question. “What?! Where’d that come from?!” You panic, trying not to look like an idiot… But failing.

Caroline and Cassidy exchanged a mischievous glance, as if they had been expecting this type of reaction out of you.

Caroline spoke with an air of confidence, “Well, it’s just that Mom’s been married twice before and she didn’t seem very happy. But when you’re around, she smiles more and she’s a lot calmer. Maybe you could be the one for her,” She explains, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Your mind was racing, trying to process the implications of the twins’ words. Did Miranda truly feel that way? Was she happier with you than anyone she had ever been with? Or was this simply a product of childhood innocence and wishful thinking?

However, before you could collect your thoughts, Miranda’s elegant figure appeared in the doorway.

Oh, shit. Did she hear any of that?

Miranda stood there for a moment, observing you and the twins with a soft, loving smile on her face.

“Well, well, what a lovely surprise, darling,” Miranda said to you, her voice filled with warmth and genuine affection. “I didn’t expect you to be home yet.”

You cleared your throat nervously. “U-uh! Yeah! Yeah, Nigel got the final print ready and I brought it home so you could take a look,” You stammered.

Miranda thinks you look so cute when you’re flustered like this. She grins softly. “Thank you, my love,” She tells you. “How is the homework coming along, you three?” She asks, addressing all of you.

Caroline and Cassidy jumped up from their seats, eager to show their progress to their mother.

As she approached the kitchen table, Miranda’s eyes briefly caught yours, a glimmer of understanding passing between you.

Fuck. You could sense that she had indeed overheard the earlier conversation between you and the twins. You hope she isn’t freaked out or anything.

As usual, though, Miranda’s tells are not obvious. Great. Now you’re going to be stressing all night about what she’s thinking.

Miranda easily guided the conversation towards the schoolwork, taking note of the twins’ achievements and offering her support and praise. She was proud of their work, but her gaze kept returning to you, more so than usual.

As the evening progressed, you couldn’t help but wonder if Miranda would ever bring up the twins’ words. If she would even acknowledge that she overheard what you three were talking about. You are deeply in love with this woman. So… Honestly, yes. You have thought about proposing to her. Multiple times… Before you chicken out. You try to remain neutral for now. You can’t show your cards. You have to see what Miranda will say first.

There were moments tonight when it seemed as though Miranda was on the brink of broaching the subject. Her eyes lingering on yours a little longer, her smile a touch more tender.

However, the night wore on, you began to fear that Miranda would keep her thoughts to herself for a later time. Perhaps she wanted to give you both space to process the unexpected revelation, to let your emotions settle before addressing the complexities of your relationship.

Eventually, bedtime arrived. Miranda helped the girls get ready and cleaned up and you tucked them into their beds.

As you followed Miranda out and began to turn off the lights, Caroline suddenly looked up at you with a soft smile. “Hey, Y/N. Can you come here for a second?” She whispered conspiratorially.

You quirked an eyebrow in confusion. “Okay,” You said with a grin. “One sec, babe,” You told Miranda. She nodded with a smile and waited just outside the bedroom door.

You walked over to Caroline’s bed. “What’s up, bud?” You asked.

“Y/N, even if you don’t marry our mom, we’ll always love you,” She said quietly. She turned and looked at Cassidy, silently asking if she agreed.

Cassidy nodded rapidly. “Yeah! We love you, Y/N!” She said excitedly.

You felt a lump forming in your throat, overwhelmed by the depth of the girls’ feelings. “Thanks, you two. That means a lot to me. I love you both too,” You say and give them each a kiss on the forehead.

As you made your way out and closed the twins’ bedroom door, Miranda was still in the hallway, her expression now unreadable. She wordlessly took your hand and led you to her room.

“I heard what the girls said earlier,” Miranda told you, her voice filled with a mixture of raw emotion and uncertainty. “And, while you may not have an answer for them right now, I want you to know that I cherish what we have,” She smiled softly. “I’m glad they can see what I see. You are a wonderful person, darling and I love you so much.”

Your heart swelled with happiness, understanding the weight behind Miranda’s words. You leaned in and gave her a kiss, savoring the beautiful woman in front of you.

The path ahead might be uncertain, but the bond you shared with Miranda and the girls was undeniably special. And for the time being, that was enough – A cherished family in the making, filled with love, laughter, and the promise of a future where anything was possible.

You can't just say this and not elaborate in great detail. PLEASE elaborate oh my God. I do agree but I want to hear every single thought you have about this topic.

Btw, I'm the same Anon who asked -- or not really asked but more so talked -- about Batman and Joker's soulmate sort of bond.

AND WHAT DO YOU MEAN WITH "COMBINING JOKER'S HEAD WITH BATMAN'S BODY"???????

I was thinking along the lines of the concept version and how they could never be satisfied like this, united in one body. What is the result of mixing chaos and order? What is the result of mixing the act of forgetting the past and fixating on it? What do you get through combining the ideology of making everything matter and taking all meaning away?

The result is that the pure concepts become stained and dull, pushed away from their original function, losing their purpose to oppose each other.

Becoming one entity is the act of becoming complete (concepts being stained) and losing the thing that made them them. Batman and Joker were never meant to unite in this way with overlapping voices, finishing each others thoughts and sentences and it SHOWS. I'm in love with their grotesque obsession with each other that borders on love and punishment. Their desire to win and conquer the other for good but never being able to because losing one side takes away the purpose of the other.

That's why I'm so, so, SO disappointed with how the Batman Who Laughs turned out. Where are my identity crises? Plural, because this could never be an one-and-done kind of deal. They became OneTM, inentionally or not, but BeforeTM, they were always wondering what it would be like. Batman could try to get closer to Joker's mental state but never fully experience it, same with Joker. But now they are OneTM and then what? Batman is just the Joker with Bruce's memories and face. I can't begin to describe how boring that is. That's like if DC made a "Deadpool kills the Marvel Universe" story only they used Joker instead of Deadpool.

Do you see my vision? Can you feel my pain? I wanted to psychoanalyse that asshole with my amateurish psychology knowledge but they only gave us a watered down Joker who makes other Batmen less interesting upon contact. WHERE ARE THE IDENTITY CRISES?? WHERE IS THE DIFFICULTY IN MAKING A DECISION?? WHERE ARE THE LENGTHY MONOLOGUES ARGUING BACK AND FORTH OR CONTRADICTING EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME??? The Batman Who Laughs is basically Two Face but without the wall seperating Harvey and Two Face. Joker!Batman should be unable to do anything or constantly switch between Bruce and Joker or save one life and then turn around and kill it. Like, where is the complexity? Why the hell is that guy only a murder machine?? That was neither Joker nor Batman's whole purpose??

Tell me all your thoughts, my friend, while I'm here spinning in circles and going insane. I'll never get out of this alive, you'll still find me ruminating on this on my deathbed.

Like, the way i felt every single word you said in my bones. You are so right, and there are a couple different points here and it's gonna get longer than usual so i'll separate each thought thread to avoid drowning in lé brain soup.

• Re: batman resisting his own insanity, i feel like i have simultaneously talked about this in 7986 different ways and haven't said anything about it at all 😂 possibly most of it has been discord ramblings. Long story short, the spine of his narrative to me is that he actively resists his own humanity and in extension of it, his evil. He wants to be good. But there's also immense psychological/emotional/physical price we pay whenever we make these kind of choices; whatever we disown and banish to our subconscious, we project out into the world and unto the people around us. The load you refuse to carry will be carried by the people around you, because at the end of the day /someone/ has to carry it, it doesn't just disappear into ether. So, in a way, for Batman to remain good, to remain a hero, someone else has to be bad. The extent in which Batman keeps his goodness "pure and untainted" dictates the horrors created around him— and particularly the creation of Joker. I say creation because the existence of Batman as a concept absolutely necessitates the existence of Joker. In a way Batman does create him, and it's true that with Batman gone Joker and half the evil in Gotham would be gone too, not because Batman is an evil presence— but precisely because he disowns his own evil.

And the thing is, in the specific context of Joker, it has become this almost loving, adoring symbiotic relationship; Joker has willingly shaped himself to fit the outline of an evil that Batman needs to defeat, he has become the sin that Batman can overcome so he can stay a saint. I actually have a draft on this that i never finished, a meta about how all the coloring choices in Joker's design eerily resemble the different color stages of a wound and the bruising after, how Batman almost feels like Jesus with Joker as his side wound, Joker being the price he pays and the pain he goes through for his martyrdom in order to stay pure, for his idealogy to have any form of meaning and significance, Joker being his very own holy suffering.

We fundamentally understand reality in form of contrasts, internal ones, external ones. As you very well pointed out, without an innate sense of contrast, we cease to have any form of coherent grasp on different concepts, and they start to sort of become noise, they become nothing. Would you truly understand what a day was and grasp it as a concept if it wasn't followed by a night? So like, what i'm saying is, people around Bruce/Batman become what he needs because they love him and they want to help him keep his narrative, the structure of his psyche intact. They help him stay 'him' by taking on the burden of what he doesn't want to be, he subconsciously shapes them in the image of what he needs to uphold his identity as a good person. This is why Alfred becomes Joker to save him, this is why Selina is the more socially acceptable pretty Joker that Bruce can actually marry and bring to his family, this is why Joker and Batman feel like they can never escape their narrative, their roles and their performance. It's the reason the moment Batman lurches to kill The Riddler in "the war of jokes and riddles", Joker stops his knife with his hand. It's their defined roles, and the greatest act of love that noone except Joker would show him. Joker says "I'm the sacrifice. I'm the evil, i'm the one who kills, i have made this choice so you can make yours. You're the good one. If you become evil, it renders both your efforts and my sacrifice meaningless, and i can not allow that to happen." And it's a truly fascinating dynamic really, for all that Joker has and hasn't done throughout the Batmanverse history, when it comes to Batman he's irredeemably selfless. Everything he does regarding Batman is to keep Batman's sense of goodness and heroism intact, and in this context he's more pure than him. Everyone around Batman wants him to kill, perhaps rightfully so, they mean well. But Joker says "i'll bear all the unbearable evil so you dont have to, and we both acutely understand that without my existence you mean nothing. I will be the monster so you dont have to." And honest to god there's a heartbreaking affection to this, something noone else will ever be willing or want to offer to Bruce, not to this extent.

in 'the war of jokes and riddles' Bruce tells Selina that "what separates him from utter evil is a hand on his knife. Joker's hand." like bro, he knows. In a deeply twisted and gutwrenching way Bruce knows that noone loves him the way Joker does.

• Re: combining Joker and Batman's heads and bodies, i was thinking.... two concepts maybe?? 👀 one is more like the Dullahan myth, in which Batman loses his head but he isn't carrying it, Joker steals it. And then Joker loses his head and Batman has to keep it and he's forced to use it. It'd be an insanely fun concept; the Dullahan myth can be interpreted as the idea of death of self by supposedly losing all that would make you human; your thoughts and memories and logic, etc. Except that you still have a heart, and a body, and they're not exactly cooperative. It'd be fun to have Joker's mind trying to tame Batman's heart and body, each fighting and singing their own song, same for Batman. A version of the myth has Dullahan carrying a human spine in one hand, and i mean, the possibilities are endless!

But also another concept would be: two frankenstein monsters lmaooo, same sense of discordent internal landscape, same sense of ideological tension and conflict, but also someone's gotta [tw mentions of gore] chop chop them and sew their body parts together, and that can be another interesting element added to their fucked up dynamic ✨️ it can also be Joker as Dr Frankensten and he sews parts of himself to Batman in order to save him!

• Re: Batman Who Laughs, oh girl (gn), i have nothing to add that you haven't already said more beautifully than me. There's so much emotional nuance and complex philosophy that could've gone into that concept, it's certainly one of the hardest Batman story variations to pull off, and weirdly enough, the people who dont directly aim for "Batman becomes Joker/Joker becomes Batman" stories often tell a better more intricate tale about that transformation than the people who straight up shoot for the concept. One of the things that always sends a chill down my spine is the ending of Batman: Europa, in which Joker is terrified and screaming as Batman laughs and lurches for him; that's the dynamic, that's the Batman who laughs, and the most unsettling part of it is that, Batman doesn't change. He doesn't have to. On a core level he is quite frankly a bit fucked up, it's not a stretch for Batman to be evil, and that's why his goodness is meaningful. Cue Nietsche's quote, "Of all evil I deem you capable: Therefore I want good from you. Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws." Batman is not a good guy entirely, and that makes his goodness a conscious choice with so much weight and worth and significance. I dont think a lot of DC people understand this.

With Batman Who Laughs, the name kinda sums up the take unfortunately; it's a superficial interpretation that falls flat on its own face because the writers couldn't be assed to explore how a chemical combination of Batman and Joker's narrative would unfold. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ as with any potent chemical reaction, the mixture is highly unstable and unpredictable, and that's the fucking fun of it. There's gotta be tension. I do think Batman and Joker can very well mix, i do think they can make a seamless fusion, but i dont trust any canon DC writers to handle the characterization well in a way that doesn't bore you out of your fucking mind. You gotta make a new person and you gotta capitalise on the core components both Batman and Joker share; their incessant sense of idealism, their need for purity, their volatile emotions and their aggression, their need to individuate from their context and deviate from the norm, take the third way out narrative wise, their philosophical and intellectual bend, their immense grief, their need to be oh so special and different 😂 they actually have a whole lot in common, this is why they're perfect enemies!

But yeah, writing that personality fusion is very hard because it's such an emotionally complex context and most DC writers have not felt a single emotion in the past 35 years aflhdtdhlf

This is a post about Sylvester Lambsbridge from Web Serial Twig by Wildbow. He's Plural Btw.

(Warning: Major Spoilers for LITERALLY ALL of Twig. I can't talk about this without covering the entire story and talking very explicitly about the ending.) This is really a take I haven't seen anyone make about him ever before I don't think (not that many people are out here making takes about Sy, but) so here I am to loudly shout to twigblr that Sylvester Lambsbridge is plural and he makes factives of all the people important to him and he's a fucked up little freak about it. Now obviously Wildbow didn't write him to be plural. I think if he'd *tried* to write Sy that way he would've done a dogshit bad awful job, because he's Wildbow. That said, Sy's hallucinations of the Lambs (and later a number of other notable figures) that he conjures, who act with varying degrees of independence (especially later on in the story as he gets more unstable), match pretty closely with a lot of my experiences with being plural. The ways that each of his alters are interconnected and how they're tied into deep-rooted concepts (Duncan is Politics and Social Engineering, the Infante representing Power, etc) matches a lot with how things are structured with us. Also a lot of him is tied up in his fucked up relationships! Sylvester cultivates the people around him into the shapes that best please him. He does this because he is a very very traumatized, scared individual who was sold to or seized by the government and made into a child assassin when he was a toddler. They inject his brain full of neuroplasticity drugs which cause excruciating agony on the regular. This has, naturally, leads to him having an somewhat skewed worldview from someone from a more reasonable world. He views people as either Threats or Allies, and neither can be trusted fully, ever. Both can be manipulated, though for different purposes. For the Lambs of course he'd say that he was trying to help them thrive, help them get everything they want (and genuinely he does). But he still manipulates them actively, willingly, consciously, and deliberately. This means that fundamentally, no one can ever trust him (except Jessie but this post is long enough without getting into their relationship) and so he can't get the kind of human connection that he craves. This is where his alters supplement that human need for connection. All of Sy's alters are factives of real people (and monsters), both allies and enemies. The most powerful and concrete of them are the Lambs of course, as they're the closest thing he has to people he can trust and be vulnerable with. His alters serve to help him understand and predict them, since they will never trust him and open up to him in the way he craves (because A) he's Sy and B) they're all also sooooooooooooooo fucked up in their own ways :3). Sy's deteriorating memory also fits really really well through this lens because, well, dissociative amnesia! During the time that he was on his own and his mental state got worse and worse, more and more alters started forming. He starts losing more and more memories. This is just kinda stuff that can happen when you go through a big period of trauma and you're plural. It really just Fits. And the ending of Twig, well. The alter that was Sylvester is gone. Now the host is Lord Simon. Lord Simon is a somewhat more integrated person; a lot of the crowds and voices that built up alongside Sylvester got woven in. Fusion of alters is also a thing that happens, especially during big crises. A major headspace restructuring is also not particularly weird! This man is literally just part of a system. I think I've kind of finished what I was trying to say. No clue if this is coherent or if the people will care to read it, but here it is! Maybe I'll post more Twig thoughts in the future, who knows :3

which ALSO MEANS--HA, YOU ACTIVATED MY SPECIAL INTEREST TRAP CARD i am now going to talk at you all for far too long about it >:) buckle up!

prefacing this by saying i Love animation, this makes me biased as hell with where i get my sources + how i study art. anyway!

i think my biggest #1 tip is don't be afraid to get goofy with it--characters don't have to look cool and stoic all the time, they can be silly! if an expression reads better, but looks a little off-model, do it anyway! make that guy look weird!

i draw little thumbnail expressions a Lot, whether for actual art or for just fun doodling. i don't have any recent ones to hand-- but here's some from a while ago. they help a ton to figure out what works quickly without worrying about actual facial features

they also help to see if i can push an expression further, it's easier to test out weird things on a tiny round doodle and then translate that into an actual drawing later on. pushing expressions To The Limits is a really good exercise in itself!

gonna put the rest under the cut bc it's getting long & i have a lot more to say

ok this in itself is a whole topic i can go on about for hours, but i'll try to keep it semi brief--i Love considering how different characters would show emotions! how one character would express sadness, how that would be different to another, how one character would smile vs. another, stuff like that!

related, giving characters individual expression quirks. twitch's :3 mouth & lazy lidded eyes if you could see them anyway & Very Smug Eyebrows, while grace has heavy low eyebrows & sad puppy eyes & usually looks at least 10% unsure at all times. it makes every single twitch smile look slightly not genuine and makes grace look. well. you know. the quirks are really fun to think of, and it makes drawing expressions feel a lot more fun when you personalise them!!

expressions can be easier to think of when you put characters in scenarios & consider how they'd react. it can also help to think of the character Moving/talking, instead of as a static image. mini comics or just adding dialogue to art helps a lot with this, i've only just started doing it and i'm having a blast!!

ok this one is weird and hard to explain and might only be applicable to me bc i can't see images in my brain-- but i'll throw it out there just in case! lots of artists make faces in the mirror to reference their own expressions, but it's never worked for me

i Do still act stuff out in my brain & make faces irl, but instead of doing it in the mirror, i just make the expression & consider how my face is moving in Words? ok for example This Comic, last panel for twitch--i'd run through the dialogue in my head and move around how i feel like they would, and list it off in Words--raised eyebrows, closed eyes, tilted head, etc etc. then i have a framework to base the expression on! and i don't need to stare into my own face in the mirror for reference. no mirror needed at all, actually. win/win. i do this for body language too

(yes this makes you look insane btw. sorry. if you do it too long best case scenario you get very dextrous eyebrows and worst case scenario you might start making cartoon character faces irl (or both) (i'm both))

not sure how much it helps specifically with expressions outside of animation, but it's a fun exercise--learning the limits of a character's face, animation calls it squash & stretch. drawing a face in the two most extreme states. so on character expression sheets you'll see weird faces like this⤵️ that's what that is

another exercise, i always have a ton of art saved that i like the expressions of. usually a lot of concept art for films. i'll do studies of them & redraw them, and/or take ocs and redraw them with those expressions! it's a great way to look at how other artists do stuff and yoink bits you like.

you'll hear this a lot if you look up Any art tips, but references & studies are great. i get a lot of inspo from disney concept art bc their artists are very talented people, but currently i hope disney studios' own hubris eats it alive. i want to see mickey mouse buried in a hole, the rat bastard. anyway some places i personally take inspiration from:

i look at a lot of animation concept art, some good sources are characterdesignreferences, livinglineslibrary, there's pdfs of animation art books all over the place too.

specific concept artists i like are jin kim & shiyoon kim !! they do Great expressions.

outside of film industry, tealin and tracy butler of lackadaisy cats are some inspirations! tracy butler has a great expressions tutorial here

if you find this stuff interesting & like reading, the illusion of life by ollie johnston & frank thomas is an incredible insight into the thought process behind stuff like this! there's a pdf here, unfortunately just a scanned copy but worth a read if you like this stuff!! specifically chapters 'character development', 'animating expressions & dialogue', and 'acting & emotions'

it's been an incredible year for writers everywhere, and in a time when it's harder and harder to get recognition for your work, during a year that has given so much to me, i just wanted to give back and shout some people out. this is just a very, very small chunk of the writeblr pie!

first off, a huge congratulations to @ashen-crest for the explosive and incredible launch of a rival most vial. watching this go from your brainchild to the blorbos on my dash to a fully formed book to a viral sensation on indie lists and fantasy contests everywhere. it was, no question, my favorite read of the year. there is genuine magic in those pages, i am convinced. it's been magic to watch the book soar just as it deserves.

i hope the success continues to follow you in the new year!! you deserve every bit of the reward for all of your hard work. congratulations, and i can't wait to see what you come up with next!

next, @magic-is-something-we-create finished whispers, a lifechanging and deeply emotional read that i still think about 7 months later. watching you write this was inspirational and incredible to witness, you are an absolute Writing Beast. it's my favorite book of yours now. in my head, whispers is still just a concept that you'll write someday. it's crazy to remember that it's fully just. done. whoa

I find it very interesting (A.K.A. annoying) how the idw comic tries defending this whole "sonic never kills" nonsense by bringing up every bad person who's turned around. But they also blatantly ignore all the times Sonic did kill or was fine with letting someone die

The idw comic's writing only barely functions if you blatantly ignore everything outside of it, and even then, it's still extremely iffy.

Secret Rings is canon to IDW, btw. Sonic had a flashback to the events of that game in #16.

"Everyone deserves a chance to be free, even the evil doctors," Sonic says after he yeeted Erazor Djinn in lava :)

Also yeah, some of these are creatures whose level of sapience is questionable... but not all of them. Solaris never speaks in his full form, but Mephiles is explicitly his mind, so we know that he's a cunning, sadistic deity. Sonic slashed King Arthur fully believing he was a real person, and he did act like one. Also Sonic is the very first person Shadow meets in his game, and the very first thing he asks of him is to kill all the aliens in Westopolis, with the goal ofc of reaching the "big boss" if you go through the Pure Hero route. Again, the sapience of the Black Arms is questionable, but those are still living creatures who might as well be slaves for all he knows. Doesn't care! He'll kill them all!

Sonic doesn't have a rule when it comes to his enemies: he's not a pacifist, he's not the Punisher. He either listens to them, or cuts to the chase: it depends on how unrepentant they come across. The very idea of him having a "principle" about it is ridiculous. Sonic doesn't have principles, he doesn't follow rules, he does what he wants to do.

I get the moral dilemma around Mr. Tinker: he's a blank slate genuinely willing to do good, so does he deserve to be punished for crimes he didn't commit? I don't know why Flynn felt the need to insert such a moral dilemma in a book that he himself has said is for kids and thus can't properly explore the concept of identity and sins, but whatever.

Problem is that, somewhere along the line, they started to treat him not as a brain damaged version of Eggman who might as well be a different person, but as "Eggman reformed", which is insane and even creepy from Sonic. It's just absurd that IDW Sonic based his entire moral code, that everyone has the chance to become a better person, after he witnessed his war criminal of an archnemesis simply getting brain damage, and somehow thinking that this amnesiac personality reflected Eggman's real ego. What the fuck.

Oh, and then this ridiculous shit lmao:

Not only Sonic would never play villain apology for Eggman of all people, but those examples are nothing but proof of how selfish Eggman is. He never cared about protecting the planet because of some hidden depths. My man spells his reasoning out very clearly:

But now Sonic passes off those strained alliances as some good deeds and proof that Eggman is not so bad after all. "Grade-A jerk", huh? Is that how you describe the guy who broke the planet into pieces and was willing to destroy the spacetime continuum for the sake of killing you? What's next, is Black Doom with his plans of turning humanity into cattle "a big meanie"? Why are you trying so hard, man?

Ah, and then he has to resort to guilt tripping Shadow about his own "crimes" (read: being forced to follow Gerald's programming) to get his way :) piece of shit who pretends to be morally superior when in reality he's just an awful person.

Oh this is actually something I've thought about

So if there were to be another headmate I don't think it would be from a recent split, it would probably be a trauma holder / ep / persecutor that Donnie* had kept hidden from the rest of the system. She'd probably snow up during the forest arc or during a time of peace for them all, since the brain is more likely to show symptoms of DID to the host during moments of safety.

Synopsis of why that is; imagine DID as a broken tea pot. The brain is desperately trying to keep the tea pot together and the tea inside the pot, so it's haphazardly gluing things together, half the pieces are held together with tape, and the rest isn't even stuck together - the brain is just holding the pieces and plugging holes with its hand. Now imagine that for whatever reason the pot looks stable on its own. Well, then the brain can relax a bit, so it moves its hand. Maybe it takes its hand off completely and a whole bunch of tea comes spilling out, or maybe it just slightly nudges its finger and couple drops leak. Either way some tea got out of the pot

I don't know how well that metaphor works but hopefully you get what I mean.

So yeah, Donnie would probably not be surprised but he would be anxious. Raph would be surprised as fuck but would probably know who she is, if vaguely, just because he also used to be hidden away from the rest of the system. Mikey would be excited as all hell but also with a "WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU COME FROM :D" vibe. Leo would be dissociating, scared, and thinking "fuck not another one" but despite that he'd try and be the most welcoming and get to know her. They share a head so what's the point in arguing yknow?

Raph would be openly hostile I think, since seeing her would probably also resurface a lot of trauma for the system and a lot of that emotional burden gets placed on Raph when the others can't deal with it.

*Donnie is the systems Gatekeeper, which basically means he has partial control of which alters are of aware of what as well as the inner-workings of the system. What the Gatekeeper does varies from system to system (some might have total control while others have close to none) but this is what fits Donnie.

General surface & x Reader Uf!Sans headcanons

this is mostly from the perspective of Red making it above ground without any resets from by frisk. The only resets he knows are the ones by Flowey. Not proofread it's nearly one in the morning.

General stuff

A slut for a good coat. His main one is his favorite but he's a beast at the thrifts. There is a risk of bodily harm if someone tries to get between him and a vintage coat. He's ready to shank someone. God save you if you are a reseller. He can smell it.

On that topic I see the underground getting a Lot of vintage clothing from the dumps so monsters as a society have two distinct styles: 70s/80s/90s/00s and monster culture originals pre-burial

Style-wise he goes for anything heavy and durable. Above ground he lets himself enjoy dressing up more and his style gets a more specific direction and goes very 80s with a touch of the 90s.

He likes plays and musicals. Prefers more local, low-key stuff though. Mettaton put him off uber-professional productions. He'll still sit through it for Edge tho.

Big boy <3 He's like 5'1 (154-ish cm) and fat. The fat doesn't manifest the same way because monster food doesn't work like human food. He just is fat and so his body reflects that. Some of his bones are wider and thicker to take up more space to emulate extra fat on the body. (if I get any comments about fat being a bad word or fatphobia in general just know I will hunt you down and donate your organs to the needy)

Reset trauma... He gets a therapist topside. It took a lot of convincing though. He's been prescribed half the pharmacy but it's working!

I hope this makes sense but he's a conservative slut. Like his ass-cheeks aren't hanging out like another skeleton he knows, but the way he sips his apple-tinies is whorish (/pos btw I'm slut positive)

GLAM ROCK GLAM ROCK GLAM ROCK. You can't convince me he and Edge wouldn't bond over glam rock. Like Red enjoys pretty much anything that falls under rock, but he introduced Edge when Edge was a babybones so it's their thing. Mourned when he found out it isn't really a thing anymore.

Space nerd of course. Galaxy clusters are his special interest specifically (btw every single skele is autistic. All of them). He finds bigness interesting. Do not let him get high and bring up space he gets really philosophical and has breakdowns. Incomprehensible vastness isn't always fun to think about when blasted.

Flirty drunk of course, but that's just stage one of Red getting hammered. If he gets like super super plastered the bravado goes elsewhere and he starts taking bets and picking fights.

This is a lot darker but that gold tooth isn't his... And you might be thinking "yeah??? obviously???". You don't get it. He got his tooth knocked out in a scrap with a metal elemental and decided to just trade.... tldr he ripped another monster's tooth out of their face to replace the one said monster knocked out. [I stole this vague concept from a tiktoker but I can't remember who so shout out to you kisses <3. Your brain truly <33333].

On a less dark note, he's a great partner.

He. Would. Never. Cheat. I mean it. I get the fandom characterizes him as a whore and a womanizer but in my heart, I know he would never. He has a lot of trust issues from the underground. If you somehow managed to get into a relationship with him, he is yours from now to the heat-death of the universe.

He is comfortable with flings, but you have to be friends for at least a year (only kinda joking) before he considers an actual relationship.

Would I be crucified if I said he prefers Queer Platonic Relationships? probably. I think he would though. Like he enjoys intimacy and stuff but isn't actually dying to pursue a romantic relationship yk.

Whether or not it's platonic, romantic, or something else, he loves dates. He's not gonna do super big dates every other week but he loves a good movie marathon and cuddle sesh.

Or a sesh. He's not a pothead but he accepts any request to smoke. Quiet high. I also mentioned the introspective philosopher thing. I mean it, you gotta keep an eye on this guy. Other than that he's chill.

Big dates happen every few months. They usually happen when he realizes it's been a while. Big dates end up with you feeling more loved than you thought possible. You get at least one gift–not necessarily expensive–and are treated to something you both enjoy. Red prefers quieter or less social activities. You'd think this would be limiting, that "or" is powerful. An arthouse is quiet enough to cancel out the social aspect and a (car) drag race requires less social energy, so it cancels out the volume.

Speaking of art, he has a weird relationship with art. Initially, he was a hater. Simply put he was a hater. Then, as he spent time in art museums and art shows, he developed a much more personal relationship with art. As surface level as it might seem, his favorite artist is Van Gogh. Red nearly cried when he first saw The Starry Night on his computer and then did when he found Starry Night Over the Rhône. There was something about the way Van Gogh depicted the sky that touched him painfully deeply. Then he found out Van Gogh's life story and cried so hard he threw up. It wasn't pretty and Edge was very confused and very scared.

If you take him to see these paintings or others that are his favorites he'd seriously consider it some kind of lifelong promise. He'd also cry then and there too.

I really think he'd be a lot more emotional once he gets topside and a therapist

Receiving love language is touch. Gentle stuff. He isn't used to casual touches that both mean no harm and have no expectations from him.

Giving is acts of service. The laziness was not fully his own temperament. You see how you fare if your life is reset hundreds if not thousands of times by a rampaging flower that seems has a weird thing going on with your brother. You wouldn't do that well, would you? Thought so. Anyway, he likes to fix things to show he cares. Your toaster is acting funky? He's there and it's already fixed don't even worry about it. Ugh, there are dishes and you really don't have it in you to wash them right now? He's on it like a house on fire. Laundry? no. no he hates laundry actually.

So, I figured I haven't posted a dumb, overly-detailed opinion on a minor thing here for a while.

This time, we're talking about Klyntar. Specifically, the Venom one. Because I kinda like Venom. And by that I mean "Holy hell that symbiote is such an awesome concept for a character and I love him and I love everyone utilising him and beings like him in their work!"

Now, I'm not gonna type out the whole "Venom symbiote" thing over and over, because it's long and I'm on my phone. So while I'll be shortening it to Venom, know that I don't mean the entity formed by the symbiote and it's host, but the alien itself.

And with that out of the way, let's dig into it like it's my lunch: Meat first.

Venom is. It is the best description of itself. The character is very versatile, malleable in both it's physical form and personality, and how a writer chooses to represent it says a lot about the kind of work it's in.

It can be a passionate, loving partner and a personal therapist who always knows what's up with you and what you need and is ready to provide it, often at a cost to itself. It will make you your morning coffe and get you to work while you're still half asleep, and you get it a box of chocolates as a thanks and because thst's what makes it happy.

It can also alter your memories, cause various mental illnesses, prevent you from sleeping until the end of time, eat you from the inside, force you to immediately thow up everything you eat that is not a human brain, break your bones and cause other injury only to heal it back up so it can do so again as a form of torture, it can eat all your friends while you sleep, it can also have you pick up a teaspoon and brutally and messily murder said friends with it while you're forced to watch, and it can pick and choose these based on which will break you and your will to resist it the fastest, or simply whichever it finds the most entertaining this week. It is an apex predator and once it's on you, you can't get rid of it without laying waste to yourself, too.

In all situations, IT has the control and you are it's plaything. You do what it tells you, you die when it says so, you're gonna enjoy it like it or not, and you're gonna pray to god it grows a conscience or that someone can take it down with you.

If it already has a conscience, congratulations! You are now basically invincible. Don't be a dick to it or you'll doom us all.

All of these have a precedent in canon, btw.

hi! a post u reblogged keeps coming back to me, (the one that starts: "there really are some people who never take accountability for their actions ... and you cant change that.") and idk i just wonder how you can tell if that's actually the case or if the other person really -does- deserve to devalue you/some part of you (not speaking of you directly here, lol) and pushing back against them makes -you- the manipulative one....

i keep feeling like saying "i am __ (insert whtv, like being trans, or changing how i look) and you can't change that" is something i shouldnt do out of respect/not copying others but idk! u seem way wiser than me people wise, so that's why i ask lol

Hey babe 💕 I understand where you’re coming from. I’m interpreting your words very loosely here, in the sense that by “devaluing a part of you” you just mean someone does deserve to call you out for shitty behavior. Obviously no one actually deserves to devalue you, which is an entirely different concept from calling you out. I’m pretty sure that’s what you meant, but it’s a distinction I felt is necessary anyway bc some wording in this post is giving me people pleaser haha—and I was totally there at several points, so I get the resistance to embracing this idea.

The answer to your question comes down to self-awareness. I’ve been a self-aware person my whole life—and a people-pleasing one at that. I’ve never really had a problem copping to my mistakes; in fact, I did that so excessively that I would even find myself being “the bigger person” in situations I had no business being the bigger person in. I’d literally be walking all over my own self and dignity just to appease somebody else. I guess I’m just a person who started from 0 and had to go up in terms of self-confidence lmao, so my root problem was that I had to stop myself from going “this person deserves to put me down/paint me as the bad person” in situations where I was not the bad person. Obviously if you’re someone who’s starting from 100% and has to go down to 50% to meet someone in the middle, you have the opposite issue to mine. You have too much pride to apologize, you really struggle to hold yourself accountable, you will cut people off rather than just hash things out. I was never that person.

You kind of need to be extremely honest w yourself to discern which one you are, bc I’ve seen people who suffer too much ego and yet hide themselves behind these saccharine affirmations (“I’m just not for everyone” “I’m misunderstood” “I’m just I’m just I’m just”) but it’s a bandaid on the actual problem, which is a problem within themselves they need to address. They can’t admit that they have an “ugly” flaw, so they cope by self-victimizing instead. Self-victimization can also be a form of sanitization (“I wasn’t cruel to this person; they’re just too sensitive and they don’t get my sense of humor”), which is yet another way of making something you did more “socially digestible” as opposed to coming to terms w it for what it is: genuinely shitty behavior. Luckily I don’t think I’ve ever had that flaw. Like I have an ego just like every other human being, but I’d say it takes me way less than other people to get over it and own up.

I don’t wanna paint myself as a saint btw bc my people pleasing isn’t all rooted in selflessness. Obviously it has its own selfish aspects. It can stem from insecurity, it can stem from an inferiority complex, it can stem from wanting desperately to belong, and it can even stem wanting control. For instance, believing you’re the problem in every situation gives you a false sense of control over it (“if I could just fix my behavior, this problem would be fixed too; if the other person is the problem, then I can’t fix this problem, bc it’s harder to control this person than it is to control myself. Therefore it’s easier for me to be the problem so this can be resolved faster”). I’ve had to face the uglier sides of me head on, but it’s okay!! It’s literally okay. It’s okay to quietly work through this stuff. It’s okay not to be born perfect. I know we’re living in an age of extreme sanitization rn, but I assure you it’s okay to learn to live no matter what anyone says. I dislike it when people make it seem like these visceral issues of theirs are all just a byproduct of positive aspects (“I’m just too selfless” “im just too kind!”), bc while that can be partially true, it’s usually not the entire story. And that’s okay. It becomes a problem when you don’t actively work to change for the better.

As for your second paragraph, I’m not sure what the point is? If someone is trans and someone else isn’t respecting that, they’re well within their right to assert it. This is a pretty different scenario from the one I was mentioning in that post. Hope this helps elucidate things a little bit x

The moment I read it, I couldn't help becoming so curious. Something about the phrase "the deeper the love, the deeper the hate" is just so yummy to me!! Maybe Sampo loves you so much that even if you do things that might warrant his hate he'll still love you to such an obsessive degree. orz I feel like you would have to do a lot for Sampo to truly hate you, though. ^^;;; he's just so in love with you. Even if you call him a creep or hit him in retaliation or say you'll never love him, he remains steadfast in his loyalty to you. <3

I also wish to see a scary side to Sampo!!! Though he's goofy and babygirl material, it would be so interesting to see the sides where he's cold and calculating with his business acumen (read: sly scammer behaviors lol) or even an utterly unhinged side as you wrote!!! orz I just want to imagine Sampo after he's just eliminated a rival or even your own lover and he has you absolutely cornered and he smiles at you with such a lovesick demeanor! I still can't get the concept of "even customers can become commodities for the right price" out of my mind!! Sampo has such good yandere potential. Goofy, harmless puppyboy exterior and maybe beneath that he's a gross creep who is horribly obsessed. >:D
