In the end, I think he would settle for a matching item. Something to show the world that you belong to each other. I think matching shoes, or hoodies. He would also make sure to spray them with his cologne, and get all cocky about it.

I think he would get you something you’ve needed. If you’ve been talking about needing to buy a new bag, best believe that’s what’s under the christmas tree. The thing is, he would buy the fanciest one ever. You need sunglasses? Gucci. You need that new bag? Channel. You always try to tell him you don’t need fancy gifts, but he always argues that you deserve the highest quality items. He will have you looking fly for the new year.

100% some type of jewelry. Obviously this boy would get you something Tiffany! I think he’d get a small bracelet or ring, and wrap the box in your favorite color, with a cute little bow around it. He would get something with a stone that has meaning to it. I feel like he would also get a pendant with a picture of you on the inside. It would be a picture from when you first started dating, or maybe before you did to remind you of your love for each other.

He would be super shy about getting a present, scared to seem like a softy (even though he’s so down bad for you). I think he would focus a lot on mental health, especially if he knows you’re having a rough time. He would get you some self help books, maybe even a journal. He would have the cute pens and highlighters, and tell you to write everything you feel in there, and then talk to him if you’re having a hard time. He really just wants the best for you.

Sunoo would get skincare and makeup. He would ask his makeup artists for recommendations, and put them all in a cute basket. He would add some chocolate (mint chocolate ofc), making the perfect winter self care kit. He would definitely get matching face masks for you both to wear later that night. He would be so excited to show how each product works together, and would even make you try them that same night.

I think he would get something very sentimental. I can image him getting a cute plushie for you, holding a jar. In that jar would be a bunch of little papers he wrote with reasons why he loves you, or his favorite things about you. He might even do a jar of affirmations, to keep you positive. He would want to show you how much he appreciates your love. He would also instruct you to read them whenever he’s on tour, so you don’t get lonely.

He would be super shy when it comes to his feelings, preferring to show you through quality time and his actions. He is just not the best with words, unless he’s writing. I think he would initially give you a present with clothes you’ve wanted, maybe stuff you saw at a store that he later picked up for you. Then before he leaves, he would give you his actual present; a letter. He would want you to read it when he leaves, and it would be the sweetest thing ever.

A Bunch of Watercolor Tips!

I love working in watercolor, especially with lots of details, dramatic lighting, and vibrant colors. So, I get a lot of folks who ask me for tips and tricks...and here’s a big compilation of them!

Understanding how the paint works:

The more watery the paint, the lighter it will dry

If you add a more watery color into a partially dry color, it will bloom (those spidery effects) outwards from the wet paint (the wet pain pushes the pigment of the semi-dry paint away

Some paints are “granulated” which means you can see the pigment in little spots (reds and blues do this a lot). This is okay, just roll with it! It’s a beautiful part of the medium.

More water means less control, but it’ll give you more of those unique watercolor effects like “blooms”

Brush tips:

Get one with a good point, as that will allow for clean lines (I use this in my art ALL the time!)

Lean towards using a bigger brush than you think you need. It’ll be more precise than you expect and that way you can paint a larger area before it dries. This allows for smoother gradients.

Synthetic and natural brushes both work well, but I find synthetic to hold more pigment and water, and to be more precise

Turn your paper as you work, so the brush tip is going along the edge of where you want to paint. Never paint with the middle/back of the brush as it won’t make a clean line.

For detailed spots, use a small pointed/round brush and not very watery paint. This’ll give you the most control.

Supplies tips:

Paper matters! So much! If there’s one thing to invest it, it’s good paper. I love Arches, but I’ve heard Baohong is great and cheaper too. 

Hot press paper will dry quick and doesn’t allow for a lot of blending, and leaves crisp lines. It’s smooth, so good for lines. 

Cold press paper allows for blending and dries at a moderate speed, but has some texture to it

Rough press paper has a lot of texture, but will allow for a lot of smooth blending

Student grade watercolors are totally fine, they just have a little less pigment to binder ratio--so you might need to use more paint to get a vibrant color. I found Cotman watercolors to be a good starting set (some people prefer pans rather than tubes, though)

Have a big broad palette, so you can mix lots of colors without them running into each other. I use a flat pan, and then have a smaller palette with separated spots for mixing larger color batches

The thicker the paper, the less it will warp (I love 300-400lb). Optionally, you can learn to stretch watercolor paper before painting to prevent warping! 

Masking fluid can be SO helpful if you want to protect spots from getting paint on them (you can also use masking tape to cover larger areas). But fyi, these both almost always contain latex--so watch out if you have an allergy!

To use masking fluid, buy a “ruling pen” that you can dip in the fluid. It’s a weird metal contraption that can tighten and loosen to make lines. This way, you avoid ruining your brushes with the liquid. 

Color tips:

You’ll keep your colors vibrant by using few layers. In the pieces I shared above, I used basically three layers max (besides a few deep shadows or tiny details)! 

Don’t be afraid to blend while it’s still wet, by adding in a new pigment--just keep in mind it will bloom out if your new pigment is wetter than the color on the paper already

All layers are transparent, so keep color theory in mind. If you have golden skin and paint purple over it, you’ll get a more brown tone, since they are complementary colors. 

Try not to use brown paints directly for skin colors (unless they are exact color you’re looking for). They tend to look too muddy, especially on darker skin. It’s more realistic to use a mixture of yellows (like yellow orchre or naples yellow), reds (like a nice magenta or rose) and blues to mix purple to darken the skin. This combo allows for more realistic highlights, shadows, and blushing/warmth! 

Never use grays or blacks to shade darker skin (unless it’s a very intentional and careful stylistic choice), it almost always makes the skin look ashy and unrealistic

Use a spare piece of watercolor paper to test the colors you mixed first, to see if it’s what you want

Keep this in mind when having a light source: if the light (and things lit by it) is warm in tone, the shadows will be cool. If the light is cool, the shadows will be warm. So, anytime you make a gradient, think of how it’s lit and go from warm to cool (or vice versus) depending on your lighting! 

It is actually okay to use colors straight from the tube/pan sometimes! Go for vibrancy. :) 

Lighting tips:

Work from light to dark, as you can’t lighten watercolor well once it’s put down

...but if you do need to lighten/remove a color, try wetting it with clean water and then lifting it up with a tissue! I’ve also heard a magic eraser works (wild)

Keep a dry tissue nearby for the above reason

Think of watercolor like working in multiply layers. They are transparent coatings of paint over each other!

Think through your lighting before you paint. Once you put watercolor down, it’s hard to go back...so mentally plan where you need to shade before you put your brush down. 

For deep shadows, sometimes you will need to use a lot of layers, especially if you’re avoiding black (which can work, but it can also create a blah visual pit). Layers here are really helpful!

Misc tips:

Try sketching with a colored pencil, so it isn’t as see through! (I like Prismacolor ColErase)

Or...draw your sketch and then roll a kneaded eraser over it to lighten it, so the pencil isn’t visible through the paint

Explore mixed media! I’ve done pen line art (microns) and then painted, and I’ve mixed acrylic and gouache for highlights and effects after the watercolor is done too. 

Let your work bloom sometimes! Roll with that unique beauty of watercolor. 

It can look really cool if you mix totally different colors alongside each other. Play with what it looks like to have an orange bloom in a blue spot, etc! :D

Play with fun effects! Drop alcohol, salt, or add plastic wrap that you leave to dry. These (and more) can all look really cool. 

You can paint in whatever style you want! It doesn’t have to be that typical watercolor look. Mine is really graphic and different, but it vibes with me!

Deuce Spade

Going to the farmer's market was his idea; the two of you needed groceries, and it just so happened that the farmer's market was convenient for you.

Early morning, it was decided, it would double as a date, and both of you were early risers anyway. It'd also boost the morale of the farmers, Deuce had reasoned, and you fell all over again.

A wicker basket, two, so that you could carry your purchases home, although Deuce insisted he'd carry all of them for you, and you laughed and told him no.

The morning sun shone brightly as you walked towards the farmer's market, feeding a few ducks along the way as you walked by the lake and watching as Deuce's expressions softened every time, it was cute, and he grinned sheepishly when he caught you staring.

The entrance to the farmer's market was marked by a decorated arc, and it was peaceful and fun as the two of you walked around, buying produce and chatting with the stall owners, at one point Deuce was given a comically large round of cheese to carry home when he fought off a bunch of menaces from an old lady's stall.

But the real highlight of that morning was when Deuce found the chicks.

One, two, three, more chicks than he could count properly waddled around in a pen, and with a joke, an exclamation of wonder, and a hopeful confirmation, the two of you brought home two very full wicker baskets and a baby chick that rested on Deuce's head.

Though he thought foraging in the mountains would have been a better decision for both your budget and experience, he relented when he saw the eagerness in your eyes.

By midmorning, you were dragging him to the farmer's market, chattering about the crafts and produce that could be found, and he smiled despite himself.

He watched as you conversed eagerly with the merchants, calmly observing how you skilfully picked the best produce, and how you looked at the crafts with admiration.

You had just purchased a new scarf, wrapping it around your neck and grinning as you waved at him to come over.

"Jade, Jade, look at this one"

He leans over as you took a scarf from the layed out pile on the table, and widened his eyes slightly as he saw what made you wave him over.

"Mushroom print," you smiled as you showed it to him, "and with the coloration and teal ruffles it reminded me of you"

He took it gently from your hands, noticing how the fabric was smooth but thick enough to warm, and kissed your forehead.

"Thank you, my pearl"

You muttered a "you're welcome", dazed by the sudden display of affection as he thanked the stall owner and payed for the scarf, bringing you out of your reverie.

"Hey, wait a minute, I was the one supposed to pay for that, not you"

Jade grinned, displaying his sharp teeth, eyes glinting with mischief as he feigned innocence.

"You were?"

You huffed, "it was supposed to be my gift for you, for bringing me here."

He leaned closer, scarf now hanging from his neck as he tapped his lips in thought, smirk giving away his intentions.

"Then what about a different gift?"

Rook Hunt

Your expedition to the farmer's market was on a whim, a fancy, a spur of the moment thing, but who were you to complain? the moment his hand held yours you couldn't help but go anywhere he wanted.

So there you were, between the rows of stalls and booths, illuminated by the fairy lights as Rook marveled at each product, generously purchasing trinkets and produce and whatever caught his eye.

You couldn't help but smile as Rook's exclamations of fascination and wonder brought smiles to the farmers' faces, and as you sat he waxed poetic about all the beauties the market provided, and you looked at the moon, content to hear him speak amidst the chatter and bustle of the bazaars.

"...but you know what the most amazing thing is in this place, mon amour?"

You closed your eyes, tilting your head as you emitted a curious "hmm?"

He held your hand, looking into your eyes as he smiled in adoration.

"You."

Come plan a reading journal with me.

This year I got really into bullet journaling. I like that they’re free and creative. There’s no real rules, but there’s still structure to the pages. It’s really just a good way for me to plan with my neurodivergent brain.

For 2024 I want to use a dot grid book to do a reading journal. Reading is really important to me, and after taking some genre specific classes this past semester, I want to branch out and read things that I wouldn’t normally read. I also think it will help me a lot as my family and I go into a “no buy” year. I have a lot of books I’ve purchased but haven’t read, so there’s plenty for me to pull from. I also plan on using Libby, my college library, and the local library. Not to mention, there’s plenty in my kindle and audible libraries I haven’t read yet.

I’ve done some research on TikTok, and found a creator whose reading journal style I vibe with. Admittedly a lot of my category ideas came from her channel (@lindseybluher), but I think that these can be so broad that it allows creativity to flow. If this is something you’re into, I highly recommend checking her out.

I ordered some supplies today, a new grid journal and some pens. I’m a perfectionist at heart, so pre-planning a journal helps me to avoid mistakes I might dwell on later. Here’s what I scribbled in Goodnotes while I wait for my supplies in the mail.

Here I was really just jotting down all the section ideas I had seen that I liked. The ones that are crossed out are ones I’ve decided not to do, and the highlighted ones are the ones I’ve chosen to organize the journal.

Starting with “# of books for the year”, I really just decided I don’t want to put an overall quantity goal on books to read. The main goal of this project is to read more intentionally. A number seems like more pressure than I’m comfortable with. “List of books I already own” (or “book backlog”) ultimately got cut for similar reasons. Like I mentioned earlier, I have a lot of unread books laying around. A list of them might be too overwhelming. The “abc” challenge just didn’t vibe with me anymore when I was reviewing these sections.

This page breaks down the broader sections of “Series to read” and “Book Bingo”.

Series to Read: Order of Crowns by Kate Elliott, The Witches sub-series of Discworld by Terry Pratchett, Parable of the Sower (reread) and Parable of the Talents by Octavia Butler, and the Sword Dancer series (reread) by Jennifer Roberson.

Some of the categories for Book Bingo are a bit plain maybe, but I tried to think about the books I already own when deciding what to put in this section. This is one of the many coloring activities I have planned.

Genre Bubbles will be another page of coloring that is basically just a bunch of circles of various sizes that have genres scribbled in them. Each time I read one of the genres I’ll color in a bubble.

The other two sections on this page are lists of books in my kindle and audible libraries that I haven’t read yet. I chose 12 from each, one each for every month. This will be important for the Bracket pages I’m planning.

For this last bit I was just tracking down the books in the Discworld sub-series I’m planning to read. This is the only series I chose that I don’t own. The books that are available on Libby (all but 1) I also went ahead and tagged in the app so they are easy to find later.

And that’s it for now. I plan on using this as a place to track my reading progress.

Bullet journaling (or note taking, labeling, whatever) tip, buy these markers instead of a bunch of highlighters for your colors

They’re way cheaper, come in huge packs (I have the 20 pack but I’ve seen up to 100), have a ton of variety (you can even buy specifically pastel if you want), and they last FOREVER if you take care of them. I’ve had my pack for years. I’ve also never really had a problem with bleeding and can usually color on top of dried pen without any issue (though that may depend on the type of pen).

I am totally serious, I got this pack as a gift but just checking the prices, you can get this one for the same price as a set of 6 pastel highlighters.

Chapter 7: Night caller

Breathing burns, legs sting, swallowing feels like rubbing an open wound. Ok, one thing at a time, let’s start with opening your eyes.

Benjamin slowly opened his eyes and looked around at an unknown room, a heavy constraining feeling around his leg turned out to be an improvised dressing made since the last time he’d been conscious. Elizabeth was sat beside the bed with a new dark blue dress, writing in a black diary with white highlights in the shape of an oleander, a poisonous flower. As soon as he started to move his head, she noticed and closed her diary, greeting him. “Good morning.”

Benjamin opened his mouth to ask “Elizabeth?” but it was already hard enough to breathe out normally, so he could only make the motions with his lips.

Elizabeth leaned over the boy and gently put her hand on his cheek. “Hello, Benjamin. How are you feeling?” From the nightstand next to him she took a notebook and pen and handed them to him, “Henrique told me you wouldn’t be able to speak, so when I left to buy us new clothes, I got these.”

Benjamin took them both and, with some effort, wrote down “What happened? Did we escape? Where’s Henrique?”

“Yes, we are safe for now. I stole your parents’ car and brought you here under the cover of night. We are at a small hotel close to the Ana Rosa subway station, Henrique left to by canned food and other things he thought we’d need. He said you should avoid moving too much , so try to rest.”

At that moment, Benjamin felt a warmth beside his shin and noticed a black furry smudge rubbing against it. From that black mass appeared the vague shape of a feline  face with three glowing green eyes.

While Benjamin stared at the strange creature it yawned, and Elizabeth explained “That’s Nine, he’s a magic cat of sorts and followed me. I think he’s ours now.”

Benjamin smiled and tried to reach towards the kitty, and from inside Nine came a second, almost identical cat which gladly accepted Benjamin’s petting, raising his head, squinting his eyes and purring. When Benjamin focused his gaze on the cat(cats?) he noticed something ethereal about hi, as if his body didn’t fully occupy space. And inside the main body of Nine lying next to his leg he could see 8 slightly different cats sleeping in similar positions on the same spot.

He tilted his head and furrowed his brow, confused, before turning to Elizabeth and writing “Is nine a bunch of ghosts on top of each other or did I hit my head too hard while running?”

“Huh… I hadn’t thought of that. Perhaps you are closer to the truth than you think. Your “special” nature poorly explained by our parents may give you unknown sensorial capabilities. Everything I know is that he seems to contain multiple almost identical cats.”

“Yours is a spider, right? That’s cool, does it have a name?” Benjamin was still armed with a beaming smile and genuine curiosity.

“It didn’t seem appropriate to give her a name at all. Considering what she is, I don’t think calling her anything but Elizabeth would be sensible.”

“That’s no fun.” Benjamin stuck out his tongue making Elizabeth stifle a giggle “Mine is named Echo.”

From the door sounded 3 knocks, one loud, one lower and the last one barely audible. “Oh, that must be Henrique, only answer the door if you hear that specific sequence of knocks.” Elizabeth stood up and went to the door look through the peephole. Opening it soon after.

Henrique rushed inside with a few large bags in his hands. He wore a brand new leather jacket that looked pretty thick and a black shirt with a sword with wings for its guard as a stamp.

“Benjamin!”  The older boy dropped his bags on the nightstand and approached Benjamin eagerly. “How are ya, buddy? Does your leg hurt too much? Need anything to drink? Want any food? We don’t have an oven or a microwave, but I brought some tuna flakes which should be easy to swallow.”

Benjamin started writing lots of different answers, but stopped short each time there came a new question. In the end he just decided to communicate the most essential. “I’m good. Water please.”

Henrique quickly picked up a 500ml water bottle and opened it, gently placing it up to Benjamin’s lips so he could sip without moving his arms which still hurt quite a bit. Still, after a few sips Benjamin decided he’d rather hold the bottle in his own hands.

Henrique put his hands on his hips. “Okay, Elizabeth. We’ve got juice boxes, tuna and beans cans, salted crackers, chocolate, potato chips and preserved peaches.”

“Great, that should be enough to feed us for the near future. Later we can search for a better living space, preferably with a fridge and oven, but that must wait until we find a seller who won’t look over our documents during the sale or a place where we can make fake IDs.”

“I also brought some plastic tableware and this:” Henrique stuck his hand into his pocket and took out a small switchblade, pushing out the blade and slicing at the air with precision, feeling the weight with his right hand. “We might need it to open cans and boxes and to defend ourselves if worse comes to worse.”

“Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.” Elizabeth took her phone out of her dress pocket and handed it to Benjamin. “Oh, Benjamin, could you do me the favor of finding and erasing the tracking apps my parents installed in my phone? I know that even if I’ve never tried to run before they wouldn’t lose a chance to keep an eye on me.”

Benjamin nodded his head and got to work on Elizabeth’s phone.

“We’re gonna have to get new chips for our phones and new documents as soon as possible,” added Henrique.

Benjamin stopped what he was doing on Elizabeth’s phone for a moment and typed something in the notes before turning the phone to his friends “Bring a Laptop with internet access here and I can forge the documents in 2 hours, we can print them at a public library.”

“You know a lot of shady stuff for someone who’s never been outside without his parents.”

Benjamin smiled and shrugged, getting his hair ruffled as an answer.

…

After some more conversing about what to do next, Elizabeth left to look for new chips and a laptop to bring to the hotel while Henrique stayed to look after Benjamin. They chatted a little, but soon Henrique suggested that Benjamin rest and try to heal his ragged throat, so the boy laid back down to try to sleep after eating a little tuna with crackers(a peculiar lunch). Henrique spent a few minutes watching him, but eventually slept as well, exhausted by the events of the last day.

When Benjamin awoke, his face was buried into Henrique’s shoulder. The room was dark, but his eyes were accustomed enough to vaguely see Elizabeth sitting in the corner using a laptop.

He was still very tired, and tried to close his eyes and sleep again, but the light from the computer bothered him. At the same time he felt he didn’t want to bother Elizabeth, wake Henrique or even hurt himself by trying to make enough noise to ask her to turn it off.

His heavy eyes made darkness and oblivion seem to call him back, whispering in his ear as long as he paid attention. His focus fell onto the tranquility and peace he’d felt as he rested and that the light had taken from him, but which he could have back, as long as he could call its name.

“ᏁᎥᎶᏂᏖ” whispered Benjamin, and the room became just a little darker and quieter, enough that he quickly fell asleep again.

The change just barely caught Elizabeth’s eye. “huh”.

In Wellington, New Zealand, there are a lot of couples living together, and a lot of roommates trying to save on rent. One of these pairs of roommates were Kit and Kat, who were by chance put together in student accommodation. Obviously they became best friends, with names like that how could you not?

After a few years of flatting together, and both finishing degrees, they had steady jobs and student debt that wasn't going to be paid off with Wellington's ridiculous rent.

Kit looked up from a mess of paper and pens and said "Hey Kat, what do you think we move out of the city?" He never liked it there. It was cold and full of people and concrete.

"Uhhhh. What?" Kat didn't mind it, things were conveniently close.

"Yeah let's move to the Far North. Nice and warm all year, and no people. Could get a cheap block of land up past Kaitaia and put a pre-fab house on it." Kit grew up in the Far North and always missed it in the city.

Kat looked up from her laptop with a weird look on her face. "We can't buy land. We have student debts."

"Get some up past Kaitaia like I said, and it shouldn't be more than two-fifty. Plus a pre-fab house for like fifty grand, that's a cheap home. We have decent jobs, and not much changes in utilities. Get a bunch of solar panels and bam. Free power." Kit was... excited... about this.

"Dude, I'd be further away from my family than ever," The laptop was put aside now. "If we work out the financials of this first I'm in." She didn't like her family very much. "You've put too much thought into this haven't you."
