You know what I feel we need more of?
Community centers.
Specifically, places where people can gather, have fun, host events or even just hang out. Similar to what libraries are, but not quite--a place where kids can be loud and rowdy and hang out, make friends, practice sports. Though they definitely should still have quiet areas, maybe craft rooms too. A nice place to go to and hang out after school before you're ready to head home--or a safe place to stay if you don't want to head home. Community centers could also still be fantastic for adults too--they could be used as a place to host classes on different crafts, or repairs, etc.--and still be a perfectly valid place to hang out and seek refuge.
Places like these do exist in many places in a few different forms, but a lot of them are directly tied to organizations and groups that may make people more hesitant to partake in them (ie churches, Police Athletic Leagues), or they have a cost barrier to taking part of the amenities (YMCA). While these places are definitely suitable and fulfilling for many people, they're often limiting and stifling for others--if not just flat-out inaccessible. Not to mention, they don't all fill the roles I mentioned above.
I think having robust community centers would be great for societies all over. I'll admit, my imagination is a bit grand--community gardens, sports rec rooms, swimming pools, reading and craft rooms, a repair cafe, a food cafe, maybe a dorming area for overnight stays, soup kitchens, showers, mutual aid closets and such.
Though I guess that brings about the question of how this would be funded. With churches, it's tithes and other forms of community fundraising. With police athletic leagues, its... taxes, I guess? Alongside other donations. And with the YMCA, it's memberships that provide the funding for their amenities. My initial instinct is to say a mix of taxes and maybe some community contributions would be what funds a good community center, but then there comes the issue of some places having better or worse community centers depending on the median income of their area... especially when you see how places like libraries already get little funding in favor of larger policing budgets (the libraries in my city are all closed on Sundays, and have shorter hours in general, for example)
I know I'm just rambling at this point. I just think community centers are cool! They're punk! And we should have them--cool, fun community centers!

Family Weekend
We did a family weekend at a huge/beautiful YMCA camp that my husband's family grew up going to. The weather was beyond perfect. Some of his childhood friends brought their kids, also. A lovely way to spend the weekend. The girls were so happy. So many different things to do. Baby boy slept pretty well in a pack in play in the bathroom. He's way to big but no way he'll stay in a bed. The girls were fearless on the younger kid version of a zipline and zoomed up a super tall climbing wall. Baby boy is high maintenance wherever he is but he was also happy, adorable and fun. We used a backpack type leash thing. Not sure why I didn't think of it sooner. I know some people worry about being judged but I could care less. I had two kids who didn't need a leash. Now I have a kid who needs some type of restraint. If that's what he needs then that's what will get him. We tracked 20K steps per day - and I'm sure he did more as I was often sitting down while he ran around. He was happiest throwing rocks in the creek/riverbed. Plus, super cute and looked so small on a horse ride.
My MIL seemed especially old. I've guessed she's dealing with some level of dementia for a long time. At some point she walked up to the cabin alone and didn't reappear when planned. They found her but it was a little nerve wracking to think she probably shouldn't be left alone. I think my FIL both recognizes that, feels the responsibility and is still in some level of denial about it. Hard to tell if my husband is in denial or just the type to ignore problems until he is forced to deal with them. I try to point it out without much luck.
My husband's family friend's ten year old is going by they/them. The girls loved them. They were so patient and kind with all of the kids. It was our first time explaining why someone would not go by he or she. Kids are the best and accept people however they are. They switched to they/them pronouns pretty easily. Plus, asked questions about what to do if they made a mistake. I made a few accidental mistakes. I've done switching to from She to He but the they is harder to get used to. Apologized and moved on. They didn't seem too bothered. I'm so glad my kids will grow up knowing they can be whoever they want to be.
Will probably send the girls to a Thurs-Monday sleepaway camp at the same place next year. I think they will love it and they are both very brave. Sleep away camp was never something I did but its big in the Jewish community around here. My husband has such fond memories. He went for 6 weeks every summer since he was 7ish. We will let the girls do two weeks a summer. The full summer is way too long for me.
No birth certificate and everyone's horror stories about no emergency passport appts is not helping my nerves.

I LOVE POLISH TRANSLATORS SO MUCH-
there's this movie, the english title is "sunshine barry and the disco worms" in polish its "disco robaczki", i used to watch it a LOT as a kid and i JUST REMEMBERED it exists. i started rewatching it and it has a lot of songs, like YMCA, which in the english dub (which i just checked) sounds like it always does. the polish dub is a bit quirky in that regard.
see, they translate ALL of the songs, from I Will Survive to YMCA. YOU WANNA KNOW HOW THEY TRANSLATED YMCA????
INSTEAD OF "YMCA, ITS FUN TO STAY AT THE-" ITS "ADHD CO CHWILA MĘCZY MNIE-"
WHICH ROUGHLY TRANSLATES TO "ADHD KEEPS ON NAGGING ME"
IT HAS BEEN STUCK IN MY HEAD ON LOOP. WHO TRANSLATED THIS. I JUST WANNA TALK.
in conclution polish dubs of animated movies are SO GOOD and i can never pick if i want to watch the eng or pl dub cuz they're both good as fuck (except for the few occasions where i prefer the pl dub)

My Relationship with Nature
My relationship with nature has been complicated, as I have not always appreciated its beauty and its ability to give back to us.  As a child, going out for walks was a beloved routine for my parents, but seemed like a mundane routine to me. My relationship with nature has evolved as I’ve grown up leading to a profound love for nature, especially due to travelling across United States and Canada, moving to Caledon, volunteering, the pandemic, and my younger sister.
In high school, I volunteered with my best friend at the YMCA Cedar Glen, which involved planting 100 trees, storm management, and restoring gardens in Mississauga. This was my first time being so involved in nature, and it felt very meaningful to be participating in activities meant to help the environment. This opportunity was the most memorable out of all my volunteering experiences as I was able to spend time in nature, while having fun doing it and making memories.
Moving to Caledon brought me a lot closer to nature, as we have a huge valley behind our backyard where deer regularly pass by, which has increased the amount of time I spend outside taking in the beauty of our neighbourhood. Since moving, me and my family regularly go on long drives every Sunday to spend more time with each other, and in nature, away from electronics. This initiative began with my mom, and it became something we often looked forward to at the end of the week.
Travelling has also played a major role in transforming my love and care for nature. Our trip to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick, was my favourite, where we got to visit the Cape Breton Island and Peggy's Cove, which were two of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The sights at these locations were breathtaking, full of lush green mountains, beautiful waves, and ocean views. We also decided to take a train to travel to New Brunswick to experience a relaxing ride through the nature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pandemic was also a contributor to solidifying my relationship with nature as it provided me an opportunity to get over the boredom of being at home and relieve my anxiety. Recently, I have been taking more advantage of the benefits that nature offers, to let go of stress, improving health, and achieving a calm sense of mind. Taking a few deep breaths of fresh air is enough to boost your mood and your energy level. While being in the pandemic, I have realized that nature can be healing, and it significantly helped me to stay positive during those uncertain times.
My sense of place was cultivated by my younger sister as she is someone who has immense love for nature and travelling. She is always motivating me to be outside and to spend time with her doing activities, such as biking and hiking in trails. She often forces our family to make time to enjoy nature, so we try to regularly sit on the deck in our backyard, enjoying the views, and reading a book. I hope to learn more about nature through this course, and to continue connecting and making memories with nature.
Thank you for reading! :)

Interview with American Lifeguard on CBS Mornings
Lifeguard shortage may force half of public pools in U.S. to close or limit hours
By Elise Preston and Kerry Breen, CBS Mornings
As children make a splash in Los Angeles, Chicago opens its pools, and thousands flock to Florida's beaches, it's clear that Americans just want to be in the water as summer gets underway.
However, a shortage of lifeguards is threatening all kinds of summer fun.
This isn't the first year there has been more demand than supply for lifeguards, but across the country, states and municipalities are facing their worst shortages on record. In New York City, even a 9% pay increase and sign-on bonus hasn't convinced people to take the job, leaving the city with just a third of the lifeguards it needs.
Across the country, about half of the nation's 309,000 public pools will be forced to close their doors or reduce hours, according to the American Lifeguard Association.
In Colorado, a series of state grants are working to rectify the problem. Jen Spettel of Johnstown, Colorado's YMCA said that her pool received just over $10,000, which will be used to find new lifeguards.
"It will help us train and recertify lifeguards and incoming lifeguards, and it will also help us train lifeguard instructors. That is a big piece of this, is to get more staff trained to teach more guards," Spettel said. "For smaller communities, there are less people up here. Attracting that entry level lifeguard is more challenging, we need more resources."
Wyatt Werneth, a spokesperson for the American Lifeguard Association, which patrols Florida beaches, told CBS News that low salaries, a lack of qualified applicants and rigorous testing makes it difficult to hire lifeguards.
"It is more than just a summer job," Werneth said. "Lifeguards have a unique advantage of letting people know there's a danger and to stay out of that danger."

Conclusion: Evaluating and Understanding
I have come to the end of this project, and I reach it happy in my conclusion. The last project had striked me with anxiety and fear, I wondered if I had any artistic future left to advance through, every project, no matter how good or unique would be dashed and strained by any other artistic work I would even take a moment's glance at, thankfully, by the end of this project I am pleased with the work I have produced and its quality and quantity. While not the most plentiful harvest, it was quite the achievement with only 4 weeks work put into them.
Obvious improvements could be made now, with the aid of hindsight, like improving my first work that now looks flat compared to the next two works, but I am appreciative with their outcomes.
I was quite annoyed with the band I chose to work with, little to now feedback was given, and when it was, only one member was replying. Apparently this was due to issues coming from within the band and overall lack of consistency that they upheld, such as some not being in on the same day as others and a serious case of in house conflicts that I had no part in. Thankfully, they seem happy with the outcomes, from what little I can infer. In this project I am expecting to be compensated for my commissioned work as this project has been in part a warmup test for continuing commission work outside of school after our FMP is wrapped up due to my current goals and expectations.
My biggest fear when this project came to an end was if my work would be good for a commission. Commission work is a weird can of worms, as the prices vary depending where you go, and I wondered if my works and those in which to come would survive the landscape, but after looking at a sleuth Of album and single works, and others in different artistic mediums, it seems that anything can be art in the eyes of media. Your art is to catch one’s attention, to grasp at their thoughts, your art, while having to be good, does not need to be a work of prestigious art. Look at Dark SIde of the Moon, the art itself is minimalist, compact, vacant, yet it has become one of the most prestigious album covers of all time in part to the music itself that has made the cover a household name. That's not to give the cover any credit, you probably wouldn’t know the album cover of the songs Take On Me or YMCA, because they were generally one hit wonders that overshined their own creators to the point they became overbared by it, even if they were to continue to make music later on that was just as good or better.Anyhow, I will never be certain if any art I produce gets any major recognition, if any at all, and I have come to terms with that. While I would be happy for my work to be recognized, many who are more talented than I never will, what is the morbid truth. But if I do, I hope it's something good rather than my work being degraded beyond belief. If I had to redo this project I, at this time, could not think of much to change. I think all the work is to the highest standard that I can produce as of now. Of course later I could improve my skills and therefore the work, but I would hazard a guess that it would practically stay the exact same as it is now. It has been fun to produce these works and I have learnt more about my probable eventual future job if all goes according to plan in the future.
