StreamBuilder: our open-source framework for powering your dashboard.
Today, we’re abnormally jazzed to announce that we’re open-sourcing the custom framework we built to power your dashboard on Tumblr. We call it StreamBuilder, and we’ve been using it for many years.
First things first. What is open-sourcing? Open sourcing is a decentralized software development model that encourages open collaboration. In more accessible language, it is any program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit.
What, then, is StreamBuilder? Well, every time you hit your Following feed, or For You, or search results, a blog’s posts, a list of tagged posts, or even check out blog recommendations, you’re using this framework under the hood. If you want to dive into the code, check it out here on GitHub!
StreamBuilder has a lot going on. The primary architecture centers around “streams” of content: whether posts from a blog, a list of blogs you’re following, posts using a specific tag, or posts relating to a search. These are separate kinds of streams, which can be mixed together, filtered based on certain criteria, ranked for relevancy or engagement likelihood, and more.
On your Tumblr dashboard today you can see how there are posts from blogs you follow, mixed with posts from tags you follow, mixed with blog recommendations. Each of those is a separate stream, with its own logic, but sharing this same framework. We inject those recommendations at certain intervals, filter posts based on who you’re blocking, and rank the posts for relevancy if you have “Best stuff first” enabled. Those are all examples of the functionality StreamBuilder affords for us.
So, what’s included in the box?
The full framework library of code that we use today, on Tumblr, to power almost every feed of content you see on the platform.
A YAML syntax for composing streams of content, and how to filter, inject, and rank them.
Abstractions for programmatically composing, filtering, ranking, injecting, and debugging streams.
Abstractions for composing streams together—such as with carousels, for streams-within-streams.
An abstraction for cursor-based pagination for complex stream templates.
Unit tests covering the public interface for the library and most of the underlying code.
What’s still to come
Documentation. We have a lot to migrate from our own internal tools and put in here!
More example stream templates and example implementations of different common streams.
If you have questions, please check out the code and file an issue there.

Exposing Misconceptions:
▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎
Tumblr media
{Note: The hissing cat above represents all this misinformation getting under my skin. Some people are making my claws come out.}
■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
I wanted to write this post because I am beyond sick and tired of all the ridiculous amount of misinformation being spread on this platform.
Day after night, there are so many different manifestation blogs from people who clearly do not understand a single damn thing about manifestation spreading misinformation and misconceptions about how all of this jazz truly works.
The blogs doing this do not actually understand the inner process of how natural operation of manifestation and how we manifest all the time as creators of our own reality.
There's a lot of misconceptions buzzing around here and concepts that I have been seeing people take in an actual literal manner instead of truly seeing and understanding the greater picture here, especially when it comes to Neville's teaching of imagination creating reality.
On that note, don't even get me started on the misconceptions that so many anons and bloggers have about the understanding of states.
The ignorant lack of understanding and misinformation people spread about Neville's teaching of states truly makes me want to throw a chair at some people.
I'm not kidding when I say that I could have an absolute field day with those people. Lock me in a room with them, and I'll tell them how it is. It's time to clear all this shit up right now.
It seriously drives me up the damn wall when people view states of consciousness as an optional method.
Honey, no. I cannot possibly express the amount of frustration I feel when I see blogs advertising Neville's teaching of states as a manifestation method. It's such a simple truth of how unconscious manifestation occurs all the time, and people either completely misunderstand the concept or overcomplicate it to hell.
To the people doing this: stop spreading misinformation and confusing people who actually want to understand the natural operation of manifestation and how to truly succeed with manifesting their desires.
It makes everyone frustrated and confused as hell because they're not receiving the right information they need in order to truly understand manifestation and manifest their desires.
I just want to completely clarify everything once and for all, so my awesome and beloved followers can receive the right information they need in order to help them succeed on their manifestation journey and feel inspired to stay away from blogs who have no idea what they're talking about.
It's clearly the blind leading the blind all over tumblr. The annoying misconceptions and misinformation need to come to an end.
Without further ado, let's dive in.
"3D vs. The 4D / The 4D is more real than the 3D"
People who are preaching this bullshit. Seriously, stop. Listen to me closely, I'm about to blow your mind.
There is absolutely *zero* separation between the "outer world" and imagination. I will be making a post on this to dive into this concept deeper, but to summarize this all up: the "external reality" and imagination are *one*. Separation is an illusion, and absolutely everything you're experiencing is coming from *within you*.
"External reality" is coming from your inner state of consciousness. All comes from within.
The "external" is the manifested expression from the internal because they are simply the same.
Your reality is an expression of *yourself* pushed out.
Imagination creates reality. It *is* reality.
There is absolutely no separation.
"I don't know how to feel emotions for my desire -"
Emotions have absolutely *nothing* to do with manifestation, so you can chill out and take a deep breath. First of all, when Neville spoke on "feeling is the secret," he is simply speaking of the acceptance of the fact that your desire is fulfilled.
"When I speak of feeling, I do not mean emotion, but acceptance of the fact that it is fulfilled. " - Neville Goddard
"Feeling the wish fulfilled" is only embodying the confident mindset of knowing that your desire is a done deal. Secondly, conscious manifestation is seriously all about your mindset. Transform your mindset into one full of confidence in your own abilities, and then deliberate manifestation becomes a smooth and easy breeze for you.
Your mindset is the key to experiencing Heaven on Earth. Seriously, just change the damn mindset, and you will never have to struggle on your spiritual journey ever again, I promise you.
"But not everyone likes using states-"
People who say this shit, do you hear yourself? Are you serious right now?
The complete ignorance and misinformation about the concept of states absolutely astounds me.
I'm only going to say this once, and I'm going to need you to listen close.
*STATES ARE NOT A DAMN METHOD*. Stop spreading this bullshit lie and misinformation.
States are a mental state. A state of mind with a certain perception. Your mindset holds your perception of everything you are aware of about yourself and the things you experience in your reality. You either have a "victimized" perception of yourself, or you have a truly confident perception of yourself in regard to conscious manifesting.
Either way, you are *always* in a state. There is no escaping that fact.
You always have a mindset.
States of consciousness are a mental attitude, not a motherfucking method and this is not something to "apply". Your state contains the beliefs/assumptions you have about yourself which is expressed right back to you in physical form.
You are unconsciously manifesting your reality all the time from your dominant state of consciousness. So no, it's not something "you can try to see if it works for you." You are always in a state of consciousness, whether it's a good one or a negative one.
This is not a matter of "well, whatever works for you. You decide-" No, no, no. One more time, you are *always* in a state, and you hold a dominant state that determines your perception of yourself and the "outer world" around you.
You are God experiencing the game of life through different states of consciousness.
The dominant state you hold is whatever manifests in the physical, and you are manifesting unconsciously all the time.
You are not your state. You are the pure awareness behind those states. You embody a state of consciousness, and the physical manifestation is expressed in your reality.
For more information on the truth about states, check out my post on Infinite States.
"Affirmations are thoughts"
Affirmations are simply positive statements for the assertion that something is true for you. These statements are expressed through thinking, speaking, and the use of subliminals/supraliminals.
Affirmations are a only a tool for reprogramming your beliefs in your subconscious mind to change your perception and they can also be used as a helpful tool for reminding yourself of already having your desires when you are living in the end and embodying the confident mind state of the wish fulfilled.
"I don't need to work on self-concept"
Love, you have got it twisted.
It's not about self-esteem or seeing yourself as a sexy goddess.
Your dominant state of consciousness is formed by your self-concept. Your honest conception of yourself is who you believe you are, the idea/perception you hold about yourself, and what you believe about yourself to be true.
Your self-concept forms your dominant state of mind which means it is the root cause of any underlying patterns you experience in all categories of your life. (health, jobs, money, relationships, spiritual journey, etc).
Your "outer world" simply is *yourself pushed out* and that is completely filled with your honest deeply-rooted beliefs/assumptions about yourself (and others: everyone is yourself pushed out).
Changing your self-concept only means to evaluate your inner beliefs/assumptions about yourself and change it all in order to experience your desired experience of reality as a result to match your new beliefs.
At the end of the day, improving your self-concept is solely about transforming your mindset from victimhood to the mindset of a confident creator who is aware of the manifestation power within.
Self-concept is always the most important.
Change the way you see yourself = your reality expresses the new change. There is *no* separation.
"But I need to reach the void! - blah, blah, blah"
No, you don't. You want to reach the void state, and your obsession with the void state needs to end.
You can manifest anything you desire with or without experiencing yourself as pure consciousness. It is all up to you.
You do not need to experience the void state in order to manifest your desires.
Let me tell you something, the void is actually *you* in your truest form. You are awareness.
The same awareness that manifested this whole entire universe.
And hear you are tripping out over "needing to achieve" the void state in order to manifest your specific person or a smaller waist.
You need to stop putting the void state on the pedestal and your mindset seriously needs to change, it's not helping you in reaching the void. You *are* the power of the void itself.
Take it down from the pedestal and put yourself on the pedestal instead. You are the God of your reality.
What are you tripping for? Simply turn within.
You can manifest *anything* you desire.
There are no limits for your power.
*You are the power*
You are the whole damn universe expressing itself in physical form. Get it together and chin up.
■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
Ending note: Please stop following blogs or listening to anons who are spreading these misconceptions and all this misinformation.
These people are sadly ignorant of the true workings of manifestation and how the law of consciousness naturally operates on autopilot.
Be careful with the information you consume on here or any other form of social media. Too many people have seriously got it twisted, and they're just regurgitating information from concepts they do not understand. It is absurd.
Thank you for reading. ~

MORE STREAMER!ELLIE X EXTROVERTED!READERRRR
streamer!ellie x extrovert gf head canons
Tumblr media
id like to think you two met in a really bizarre sort of way. like maybe she had just started getting big on a streaming platform and was getting recognition out in public. maybe you saw her, not knowing who she is and just asks for a photo like everyone else was doing
the photo is one you still hold onto to this day but after you kinda let her know that you have no idea who she is.
she’ll just chuckle, grab a pen from her pocket and write her number on your palm. telling you to use it if you ‘want to find out who she is’
dancing in the background of ellie’s streams in her shirt and shorts. singing along awfully to lana del ray or taylor swift that was playing on your earphones. you were purposely trying to annoy ellie but she’d just watch you with a smile on her face.
applying red lipstick just to walk into ellie’s room and press kisses all over her face before walking out. leaving ellie staring straight into the camera with a lovesick expression
having literally the best relationship with her fans. chatting on live and when you meet them in person you literally always get along. offering to take their photos with ellie but them insisting you need to be in it.
if ellie is streaming whilst you are getting ready for a night out with your girlfriends, you would constantly enter the room with different outfits on to get ellie and chats opinion.
they love it when you do an enthusiastic spin in each of your outfits no matter how plain they are
her instagram = all you. and i mean there is only like one post of just her. it’s literally photos of either you or you and her or you, her and your mutual friends.
she loves how clingy you sometimes get, when i’m these moods your always with her no matter where she went. ellie doesn’t complain though
playing games like online uno, monopoly and cards against humanity with ellie, dina and jesse. viewers get a nights worth of entertainment. you guys screaming at each other and blaming each other when something goes wrong
you and ellie tend to team up on these streams as well
you guys are like polar fucking opposites. while she’s almost always seen with a frown on her face (unless she’s with you) you always seem to be smiling. grumpy x sunshine🤭
tattoo stream?? maybe she’s friends with someone who does tattoos so you both get matching tattoos whilst live (and then after it’s ended you get a special little tattoo on a place that can’t be shown on a live stream)
she makes cash from streaming and will spend all of it on you and your shared house. i mean like high end furniture and designer clothes
cooking streams that end up with you two dancing to whatever non copyrighted songs are playing. her twirling you around and all that jazz
when you go on holidays and are recognised by fans all over the place. at first it’s a tad bit overwhelming but you both actually start learning other languages to speak to your international fans.

From the news I'm getting here across the Pond, it seems like Liz Truss has perhaps achieved a marvel in that she's turning out to be more incompetent than Boris "Big Dog" Johnson. What are the chances the U.K. will have a new Prime Minister by the end of the year?
Yeah, she's exactly as competent really but, and this cannot be overstated, the person whose mess she's inherited IS Boris Johnson. But she compounds this with a Chancellor who is much, much worse.
Uh, this answer got long, sorry about that, but lol what can you do? Exercise restraint? Pfft.
By the end of the year... probably slim, as hilarious as the letters of no confidence are; the party can't survive another new leader that quickly. Johnson's greatest legacy - his greatest gift to the left - is the one he was always going to leave: he rose to power on a platform of 'feelings not facts', a method that is highly effective in the short term but horrendously unsustainable in the long run, once the shine of the bombast wears off and people realise that the bins aren't going out anymore. You cannot bluster and jazz hands your way through running a country indefinitely. You have to be competent at the daily grind.
Big Dog was not.
But during his tenure, everyone either threw all their weight behind him to suck his Union Jack-coloured cock and get a cushy ride themselves, or they were openly fired for disloyalty. He single-handedly created a Tory party that was defined by patriotism-flavoured incompetence. And then the bubble burst, and his old nemesis Mr Consequences came calling, and the situation was, very suddenly, that he was hot garbage - just absolute weapons-grade 'this is not a place of honour' levels of toxic - to have in charge of the party, but most importantly, crucially, none of them could get rid of him without also incriminating themselves.
That's why it took so long before the wave of resignations finally kicked things into happening. That's why it had to be a wave of resignations. None of the limping high school debating champions that were left in government could survive without him; even though he was actively poisoning them, they would die immediately with him gone. The tipping point came when finally that particular cost-benefit analysis see-sawed the other way.
And what's left? What was always going to be left: a hardcore radical group of 'feelings not facts' fascists, and an insipid hodgepodge of self-deluded clowns with the life skills of a particularly underwhelming five-year-old, all of whom are embroiled in bitter internal bitching wars and cliques and spend their days writing each other's names in a Burn Book rather than doing their jobs.
Everyone is blaming each other. No one is taking responsibility. The party can no longer agree on anything, except perhaps "Woe is us."
This latest leadership contest was actually a vicious thing that added to the damage and made the in-fighting worse. If we now add ANOTHER to the pile... well. I think we would see, at minimum, mass defections to UKIP. Very possibly some new political parties, like what Labour did when Jeremy Corbyn was too left-wing for them so Angela Smith and Chuka Umunna founded Change UK and claimed it was because Corbyn was racist and then Angela described people of colour as "black or a funny tinge... you know, a different... from the BAME community" and then Change UK was quietly dissolved after 10 months and no one remembers them anymore. It would be a disaster, is what I'm saying.
A new Chancellor, though... that's more likely, I think. Kwasi Kwarteng was rumoured to have had an affair with Liz Truss and honestly I strongly suspect that's why he got the job - he wrote a stupid book about economics that no one liked, on the night of the Brexit vote was overheard by a journalist saying “Who cares if sterling crashes? It will come back up again", and then became Chancellor, and then released a mini-budget last week that has tanked the pound to the lowest performance against the dollar since records began and immediately embroiled his PM into a financial crisis so bad she literally went into hiding for a day and a half. The UK is... actually completely fucked, as of this week. I cannot overstate what a fucking unmitigated disaster that budget is, or the damage it's causing. We were already doing very badly. This is catastrophic. This is like having an infected foot and everyone being concerned because it's turning gangrenous, and then Kwasi turns up and chops off both your legs and your dominant hand and then also the legs and dominant hands of everyone else present as well, except for himself and his rich mates. We are a long, long way beyond "First, do no harm."
But Kwarteng is also very replaceable.
However:
Liz Truss is extraordinarily stupid. I honestly don't know if it will occur to her to sacrifice him. If she's sensible she will; but 'sensible' is not a word I associate with Liz Truss.
The other option, of course, is an early general election being called, for the seven-hundred-and-fifteenth time in the last decade I stg. However, Tories only call for those if they stand a chance of winning.
One poll yesterday put Labour thirty-three points ahead of the Tories.
To put that into perspective, if that were to translate into a GE performance, the outcome of the vote would leave the Tories with...
THREE SEATS.
But! Of course! It's not so simple anyway:
That was an opinion poll, and those are always more extreme than an actual vote because people use them to express dissatisfaction. A vote would not be that extreme.
That was one of several polls yesterday. If we take an average, the actual figures are:
Labour are nineteen points ahead of the Tories.
Would you like some context?
In 1999 when Tony Blair won his landslide Labour victory - the greatest Labour lead in recent history - do you know what his polling lead was?
Twelve points.
Lol
So it is vanishingly unlikely the Tories will call a GE themselves. Their only hope now is that they can somehow do a good enough job to fix their party and win public confidence back before the next GE, which will be no later than January 2025.
In ENTIRELY UNRELATED NEWS I'm sure, Labour have just declared that they are backing a change to a proportional representation voting system in place of the UK's archaic first past the post system. Funny that.

I just wish that people realize that none of the Duggar kids are our friends. While they do deserve our compassion for the abuse they've been through (esp the daughters), and to be able to unlearn all that harmful Fundie Christian rhetoric that they have internalized in private, they are still bigots and absolutely do not deserve public platforms and continued speaking opportunities. For example, Jill and her husband Derrick have yet to address or apologise for his transphobic and homophobic tweets aimed towards trans public figure Jazz Jennings and gay couple Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, and in her latest book Counting the Cost, Jill dismissed the controversies as her husband simply "speaking his mind on various and making a few enemies".

*ISRAEL REALTIME* - "Connecting the World to Israel in Realtime"
🔻ROCKETS from Lebanon - Eilon, Goren, Idmit area.
▪️Egypt to Israel: "Any Israeli move to occupy Philadelphia will lead to a serious and serious threat to Egyptian-Israeli relations and the threats of the organizations and the Gazans, we will not allow this.”  “Egypt is able to defend its interests and sovereignty over its land even with fire and will not be held hostage by a group of extremist Israeli leaders.”
Hamas to the Egyptian mediators: “We welcome the protection of the Palestinian right to the Philadelphia corridor, and the continued assistance to the Palestinian people in Gaza"
(( This is bizarre, as who tells another country they can’t control their side of the border?  I suspect someone’s smuggling business is at risk. ))
▪️Disaster:  As previously reported, 21 hero soldiers fell in battle in Gaza yesterday.  Although it was first announced 10 deaths, and then 21, it is 21 total - not 10 then 21.  Families are being notified, the names of the 10 have been released: Sgt. Maj. (res.) Matan Lazar, 32, Sgt. First Class (res.) Hadar Kapeluk, 23, Sgt. Maj. (res.) Sergey Gontmaher, 37, Sgt. First Class (res.) Elkana Yehuda Sfez, 25, Sgt. First Class (res.) Yoval Lopez, 27, Master Sgt. (res.) Yoav Levi, , Sgt. First Class (res.) Nicholas Berger, 22, Sgt. First Class (res.) Cydrick Garin, 23, Sgt. Maj. (res.) Rafael Elias Mosheyoff, 33, Sgt. Maj. (res.) Barak Haim Ben Valid, 33.  May Hashem avenge their blood!
▪️The US has imposed sanctions on financial entities in the Gaza Strip, on an Iraqi airline and on entities that support the pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, following the fact that they work in sync with the Revolutionary Guards and Iran's Quds Force.  The "Fly Baghdad" company responded to the imposition of sanctions on it by the Americans: “We’ll sue.”
▪️New hostage deal?  (No confirmation of this info) Israel turned to Qatar and there is clear progress after a slight change in Hamas' position. The deal includes 4 stages
1- Release of hostages other than soldiers
2- Cease fire for a long period
3- Tactical withdrawal of the IDF from several areas in the Gaza Strip
4- Release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons, a number agreed upon during the negotiations
Israel is waiting for Qatar's response to the deal presented by Israel.  Israel asked not to publish in order not to create chaos, but this leaked within hours. (We’re sharing after it is already widely published.)

Renowned as a pioneering guitarist who pushed the boundaries of the instrument to places unknown to most of his contemporaries, Jeff Beck, who has died from bacterial meningitis aged 78, could more than hold his own with fellow luminaries such as Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton (all three of them played in the Yardbirds). Yet unlike them, Beck was something of a reluctant celebrity, unwilling to pursue the superstardom that his musical gifts could have brought him.
“When Led Zeppelin made it so big, I was jealous, absolutely jealous as hell,” Beck said in 1986. “But I’m glad I carried on as I was. I personally couldn’t have put up with that mass adulation.”
When Clapton and Page appeared at Live Aid in 1985, Beck preferred to stay at home and tinker with his beloved collection of classic hot rod cars. “I didn’t want to go, because I hate large crowds,” he claimed. The Melody Maker journalist Chris Welch wrote that “he can appear sullen, lazy and difficult. He has an expressive face that appears to give away his every mood and thought.”
Nonetheless, Beck was a central figure in several key developments in rock music’s history. As a member of the Yardbirds in 1965-66, he featured on some of their best-known hits, including Heart Full of Soul and Shapes of Things, while expanding the band’s musical palette hugely. His solo recording Beck’s Bolero was a firework display of contrasting guitar techniques and textures, and pointed to Beck’s future, in which he would move away from mere rock to embrace jazz fusion and even classical crossover. His 2010 album Emotion & Commotion included versions of Benjamin Britten’s Corpus Christi Carol and Puccini’s Nessun Dorma, interpreted through Beck’s uniquely sensitive touch. He would frequently pick strings with his thumb while modifying tone and pitch with the tremolo bar.
Beck’s gifts burned most intensely after he left the Yardbirds in November 1966 and formed the first incarnation of the Jeff Beck Group in early 1967, featuring Ronnie Wood on bass and the telltale rasping vocals of Rod Stewart. Beck’s previously recorded solo hit Hi Ho Silver Lining, which reached 14 on the UK chart in the spring of 67, gave the group a handy launch platform, although their debut album, Truth, was not released until the following year. When it was, it reached 15 on the US chart.
This was largely down to the group’s tour manager Peter Grant (later Led Zeppelin’s manager), who had taken the band to the US for some ecstatically received live performances and then persuaded Epic Records to sign them. Truth’s soulful mix of blues and hard rock was a trailblazer for a new wave of bands, not least Led Zeppelin themselves, whose own debut album appeared six months later.
Although Truth failed to chart in Britain, the Beck band’s second album, Beck-Ola, gave them another No 15 hit in the US and this time reached the UK Top 40, and they followed up with successful touring in the US, but internal friction was beginning to pull the unit apart. With impeccably poor timing, they broke up just before they were due to play at the Woodstock festival. Stewart launched his solo career, and formed the Faces with Wood. A rebuilt Jeff Beck Group released the albums Rough and Ready (1971) and Jeff Beck Group (1972), but the magic moment had passed.
Beck was born at his family’s home in Wallington (then in Surrey, but now in south London). His father, Arnold, was an accountant and his mother, Ethel, worked in a chocolate factory. Jeff attended Sutton Manor primary school and Sutton East county secondary modern.
He credited his mother with pushing him to study music, because she “used to force me to play piano about two hours a day. But that was good, because it made me realise I was musically sound.” He became fascinated by the electric guitar when he heard Les Paul’s version of How High the Moon. After experimenting with “stretching rubber bands over tobacco cans and making horrible noises”, he graduated to an old and battered acoustic guitar, and then built his own instrument using a cigar box and a picture frame.
Beck attended Wimbledon Art College, where he was mostly preoccupied with guitar-playing, inspired by albums by American bluesmen such as Buddy Guy and Muddy Waters. He bought himself an electric guitar and played briefly with Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages, and in 1963 formed the Nightshift, who recorded the single Stormy Monday. Later that year he joined an R&B band, the Tridents. He took a great leap forward in 1965 when he joined the Yardbirds, replacing Clapton. This was on the recommendation of Page, whom Beck had known since being introduced to him by his sister Annetta in his teens.
He was with the Yardbirds for less than two years, but during this period they recorded some of their best-known material, including the hit singles Heart Full of Soul (featuring Beck’s raga-like guitar), a UK No 2 and a Top 10 hit in the US, Evil Hearted You (UK No 3), Shapes of Things (UK No 3) and Over Under Sideways Down (UK No 10). Happenings Ten Years Time Ago (1966) only made it to 43 on the UK chart (and 30 in the US), but its complex mix of guitar parts by both Beck and Page have led to it being considered a milestone along the road to full-blown psychedelia. Page would go on to bend the boundaries of rock music with Led Zeppelin, while Beck was experimenting with different tunings and feedback effects.
In May 1966, Beck made his first solo recording, Beck’s Bolero. It featured Page, the Who’s drummer Keith Moon and the future Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones (indeed, the musicians on the track almost became Led Zeppelin), but was not released until it became the B side of Beck’s single Hi Ho Silver Lining the following year. Based on the rhythm of Ravel’s Bolero, it was a spectacular display of guitar tonalities, from ethereal slide guitar to hard-rock riffing, and suggested the extent of Beck’s ambitions.
After the Jeff Beck Band ended, he formed the “power trio” Beck, Bogert and Appice in 1973 (his bandmates being ex-members of Vanilla Fudge), but the project failed to match expectations and they split in 1974. In 1975 Beck re-emerged in a jazz-inflected guise with the all-instrumental album Blow by Blow, produced by George Martin. It became Beck’s most successful album, reaching No 4 on the US chart and selling a million copies. For Wired (1976), he teamed up with Narada Michael Walden and Jan Hammer, veterans of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Subsequent live shows were preserved on Jeff Beck With the Jan Hammer Group: Live (1977).
Beck released intermittent solo albums, including Flash (1985), Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop (1989) and Jeff (2003). Flash delivered a hit single, with a cover version of Curtis Mayfield’s People Get Ready, and the track Escape won Beck the first of his eight Grammy awards. He made guest appearances on Mick Jagger’s album Primitive Cool (1987) and Roger Waters’s Amused to Death (1992). In 2020, he released the single Isolation, a John Lennon song on which he collaborated with the actor Johnny Depp. In July last year, the pair released an album, 18, after Depp had joined Beck onstage for some UK and European concerts.
Beck was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 for his work with the Yardbirds, and in 2009 for his solo career.
He is survived by his second wife, Sandra Cash, whom he married in 2005.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: THE WOMEN IN NIGERIAN MUSIC
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nigerian music’s history is beautifully storied, and like every great story has had heroes pop up at different times, each handing the baton of Nigerian culture from one generation to the next and laying a small piece of the success it enjoys today. When magnifying glasses are placed on Nigeria's music with the intention of highlighting its most significant contributors, it is very common for our women to get left out. The reasons for this oversight—the relative scarcity of female acts in comparison to male counterparts—is no excuse. If anything, the women who have made their fair share of efforts to shape our music deserve a bigger spotlight, for they had to overcome the more prominent barriers to get there, barriers placed by a patriarchal society and increase the further back you go in our history. Barriers that have not been completely cleared even today.
With today's women breaking and setting records across gender lines, the International Women's Day of 2023 presents a poignant opportunity to document the strides our women make in modern music, while highlighting in retrospect the talented, underreported women who came before.
While Fuji music and its lesser-known affiliate, Apala, were dominating the local scene in the '70s and bringing to their creators like Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, Ayinde Barrister and Ayinde Kollington national fame, another Yoruba-Islamic genre, Waka, was traditionally performed by female artists. It was drawn from Alasatu, a Yoruba genre with strong Islamic and Arabic influences, and Alhaja Batile Alake fashioned Waka out of it, allowing the genre to escape the confines of religion and tribe. Another prominent female singer, Alhaja Salawa Abeni, built on this, bringing Waka to national platforms and beyond.
The Ladiju sisters (or twins) are a pair of female artists whose contributions to Nigerian music remain timeless. Their debut album, Iya Mi Jowo, was released in 1969, and they went on to release 5 more albums that were ahead of their time in content and sound, as they drew from a wide pool of influences that included foreign sounds like Jazz and Rock as well as the indigenous like Waka and Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat.
Across the Niger, the women of South Eastern Nigeria were making similarly impressive strides of their own. Nelly Uchendu is most famous for her Love Nwantiti album of 1976, especially the eponymous lead single. She was not the only Igbo songstress to be renowned for her singing prowess. The “Elegant Stallion”, Onyeka Onwenu excelled even beyond writing and performing music, as she took up roles as an actress, worked as a broadcaster and even delved into politics as part of a storied career, putting to bed question marks placed over a woman’s capability. Christy Essien-Igbokwe chose to put her inspiring messages of woman empowerment and Nigerian advocacy into song, and these female artists performing at the top level helped imprint in the next generation that chauvinistic gender roles were a thing of the past.
Modern Nigerian (Pop) music, or Afrobeats, has featured a larger share of women at the highest echelons at every stage, and it must be acknowledged that they have all but caught up in terms of individual star power.
Weird MC was one of a few artists to first nationalise American hip-hop spirit. Her 1996 album, Simply Weird, and its standout track, "Allen Avenue", helped dress up rap music in the Nigerian clothing it decks today. 2006's "Ijoya" took her popularity a lot further, and it remains a timeless classic to this day. Asa's musical inclination was similarly unconventional, but it lay at the other end of the spectrum, as her R&B/Soul-powered eponymous debut album announced the entry of a new star. With it she strengthened her image abroad, ensuring that she enjoys today an audience beyond the shores of Nigeria. Thankfully her talent came with longevity, and her most recent album, released in 2022, still serenades Nigerians like her first effort did 15 years before.
Subsequent acts would hone in on conventional Nigerian pop, which they coloured with their honeyed vocals. Omawunmi made her debut with 2009's Wonder Woman, fresh off becoming a runner-up on Nigerian Idol where she had launched a prototype of her career. With singles like "In The Music", "Bottom Belle" and "If You Ask Me", her star appeal was never in doubt, and with her most recent album Love Deep High Life only two years old, her diminished popularity should not be taken for hibernation. Waje, another singer blessed with incredible vocals, emerged around the same time, first making a guest appearance on Psquare's "Do Me" in 2008 before songs like "So Inspired" and "For A Minute" served as a proper entry into the scene. Just like Omawunmi, she remains an active member of Nigerian music's ranks, as her latest album, "The Misfit", debuted last year.
At the turn of the decade, Tiwa Savage moved in from the UK, pitching her tent with Don Jazzy's Mavins Music after she had spent the last few years providing back up vocals to icons like George Michael and Mary J. Blige. Her adaptation did not take long, as her superb debut album, Once Upon A Time,—with songs like "Kele Kele Love", "Eminado" and "Without My Heart"—showcased equally her supple songwriting and her silky, yet powerful delivery. She is one of a few acts in Nigerian music, across gender lines, who have ruled the last decade in near-constant influence, and with her ability to tie effortlessly into new and trendy music (see: "Loaded" with Asake and " Who's your guy" remix with Spyro), there is still a lot more to come from the songstress.
Seyi Shay is another act that shares a common history of finding her feet in music in the United Kingdom. She moved to Nigeria at about the same time, and her first steps here—"Irawo" and its Vector-assisted remix; the Loving Your Way EP; and her debut album, Seyi Or Shay—were very well received by the Nigerian audience. Her most recent release, 2021's Big Girl, came with positive acclaim, especially its titular lead single. Yemi Alade's "Johnny" brought with it an impact that every artist desires for their breakout single, and to this day its video continues to accumulate astronomical numbers as more and more people from around the world discover the self-styled Mama Africa. To strengthen her claim to this title, she has released music in a variety of African languages, allowing her to tap into diverse cultures and strengthen her continental profile.
Simi, the woman with the voice that soothes sometimes and strikes other times, also made her debut in the half decade between 2010 and 2014, a time period that supplied female acts in buckets, some of whom still enjoy a continued presence at Nigeria's top flight. She debuted in 2014 with "Tiff", doubling down on this entrance with "Jamb Question" in 2015 as she checked 'playful storytelling' as part of her skillset. With each album since then she has gone on to provide an inspiration to any female acts entering the industry. Sisters Niniola and Teni share little more than a surname, but their varied musical paths have individually brought them to the top flight of Nigerian music's roster. Niniola was one of Nigeria's first adopters of House music, though some articles on the subject will disrespectfully leave her out altogether. Her accolades speak for her though, and she earned a Grammy songwriting certificate via 2017's Maradona, which Beyoncé sampled for her Lion King: The Gift album. Her most recent EP, Lagos to Jozi, builds on her vibrancy and innovation, weaving Nigerian slang into South African beats for a dance-ready project.
Her sister, Teni, is the more exuberant artist off-stage, and her music is a more straightforward affair involving Nigerian Pop rhythms and love-strung writing. Clearly a vigorous romantic, 2018's "Case" outlined the lengths she was willing to go to for love, while 2019's "Power Rangers" imagined herself as a superhero coming to her lover's rescue. She also has an inspiring side, as revealed by "Uyo Meyo", and a balance of these two has driven her to recognition in Nigerian music.
The biggest strides taken for Nigerian women in music, especially on the international stage, would come on the wings of one of its newest entrants. 27 year old Tems has achieved in four short years what would be an impressive resumé for an artist's entire career—a Grammy win, an Oscar nomination and collaborations with some of the biggest artists in the world. All this is made that much more impressive by the fact that she is still yet to release a debut album, and when it arrives later this year it is expected to push her career to unprecedented heights.
Behind Tems are a band of other female acts. Young, talented and eager to break down what is left of Nigerian music's gender tilt and level rhe playing field. Ayra Starr's exploits in Mavin records have produced an EP and an album, and with them she's made a name for females and teenagers in Nigerian music. While this is only a summary of the very many women that have graced Nigerian music for years, it is hoped that with other young acts like Fave, Liya, Guchi and Bloody Civilian making their way up the ladder, next years International Women's Day will feature an even lengthier list than this.

Bobby Carter is slowly changing the music industry, one genre-bending performance at a time. As the Senior Producer for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concerts, he’s brought on an increasingly-growing roster of emerging artists, big names, and icons to the company’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. to perform not only for the building’s employees, but for an audience of millions worldwide.
The St. Louis native’s journey has been long and arduous, but fulfilling, to say the least. “I’ve been at NPR for 23 years,” Carter tells ESSENCE. “But my route to where I am now was a bit unconventional; I started out as an intern in the summer of 2000. I was in the digital media space at the time, my job was to edit our content for the web stream. I spearheaded or managed our live streams – and this predated Tiny Desk.”
“I knew at some point I wanted to get involved with music at NPR, but that opportunity wasn’t there yet until NPR Music came along,” he continues. “I slowly started to drift over into the music space by writing pieces here and there, and contributing to our year-end content. In 2014, that’s when I produced my very first Tiny Desk concert, and three years later I was officially over with Tiny Desk in a formal role.”
Since his full transition to Tiny Desk in 2017, Carter has developed partnerships with Complexcon, and HBO’s Insecure, along with creating new initiatives to grow and diversify the program’s reach. He’s also known for further innovating the Tiny Desk Concert Series with artists such as Usher, H.E.R., Anderson.Paak, Jazmine Sullivan, Kirk Franklin, and more. The process of choosing musicians for the now-iconic performance platform has shifted from the time of its inception, but for Carter, he’s more hands on than ever.
“Well, early on it was a lot of us pursuing artists from our end and selling artists on what the concept is and getting them to come and play,” describes the Jackson State University graduate. “Fast-forward to now, it’s pretty much a two-way street. Tiny Desk, as you’re aware of, has become a phenomenon of sorts, where artists and labels know at this point that it’s a vehicle for promoting music and selling music.”
While many musicians feel that Tiny Desk is critical to promoting their music, Carter has found that the promotion of Black music has been equally as important. “I’m really passionate about helping to tell the story of Black music, because the story of Black music is the story of American music, if you ask me,” he says. With the month of June being Black Music Month, NPR has observed it by honoring Black music’s influence through various mediums, and highlighting its impact so that the story is told properly.
“You can’t tell the history of music without black people,” the veteran DJ says. “What we’re trying to do here at the Tiny Desk with Black Music Month is to really present that in a way that shows us in different lights. You have R&B, gospel, etc.; there’s just so many layers to black music that have made American music what it is today. It’s a story that isn’t told enough, it can never be told enough.”
Outside of jazz the only other true artform produced in the country is hip-hop, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. During his earlier days at the platform, Carter speaks about the “internal conflict” that he has dealt with to get people to recognize that hip-hop and artists like Gucci Mane also need to be heard in a space like NPR.
“I think that there is a struggle to be sure that every single perspective is heard, and understand that whether or not a they’re a street MC or a trap artist or a neo soul artist, that they all belong, their perspective deserves to be heard at the Tiny Desk, as long as the performance is right,” he says. There were people who were uncomfortable with a Gucci Mane at the Tiny Desk, given his history and whatnot. But he served his time for his wrongs, and he has been the ultimate redemption story.”
The Atlanta rapper’s appearance on Tiny Desk altered the trajectory of what the concert series was, helping to catapult it to the successful platform that it ultimately became. “I think that Gucci Mane, that Tiny Desk was a big, big game changer for the Tiny Desk in terms of hip hop, because it showed other artists in his lane that, ‘We can come and we can do our thing here too,’” Carter states, before pausing briefly.
He continues by saying, “There is an internal fight, because a lot of times people want to feel comfortable, they don’t want to feel threatened by hip hop. But if you’re a little uncomfortable, that’s okay – maybe it’s just not for you, but it is for somebody.” After Gucci’s performance in 2016, Tiny Desk featured Chance the Rapper, Big K.R.I.T., Rakim, Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion, and Trina, among others; bolstering the fact that the genre is still strong, and is here to stay.
Throughout the years, many legendary performances have taken place behind the desk of the All Songs Considered’s host Bob Boilen. Tiny Desk has risen to the heights of popularity, and is now a staple in today’s culture. Carter, who helped build it to what it is today, understands the task at hand, and knows how special this platform is. “I feel like it’s part of my duty to continue to do this,” he says. Not only continuing to push current stars and rising artists to the forefront, but also giving flowers to legends like El Debarge, Patti LaBelle, Charlie Wilson, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, and more.
“I think that it helps to bridge that gap and it helps to bring the youth over to these legendary legacy artists, and to remind them of their greatness,” Carter explains. “I think a lot of times  when I bring some of the artists that I bring to the Tiny Desk, this should serve as a reminder of their status in music.”
“So, I feel the ultimate responsibility, from a cultural standpoint, is to show people and use our huge audience to spread awareness about these artists,” he continues. “To grow and continue to be a voice for black culture, and for diversity as a whole.”
