For SeaOfThieves // (fighting a Mobius)
The creature was huge - much larger than most Shadows he'd fought in the metaverse, but no more unpredictable. It had it's abilities and it stuck to them - most of the tricks seemed to revolve around using it's size to it's advantage, or at least, trying to. Akira had plenty of experience fighting things bigger than he was though, and he was plenty mobile - size meant nothing if you couldn't keep up with your target, after all~
It was entirely too overconfident about it's power, too - Akira knew very quickly that this was a creature so accustomed to being The Strongest that the notion something could be stronger than it didn't even cross its mind. It probably didn't help that the first several minutes of this fight, Akira had dedicated to only dodging and avoiding - putting in a few obligatory gunshots to keep it's interest, but ultimately just... avoiding. The creature seemed to be of the mind that such was all he could do, and that dodging was a sad, desperate attempt at staying alive.
But oh, how wrong it was. Akira's every move was calculated - he was much better at fighting now than he'd been back home - Eorzea was one of his favorite worlds for numerous reasons, particularly the amount of fighting styles it had that were free to learn to anyone of sufficient potential. And Akira had potential in spades.
As such, he knew better than run headlong into a fight with an opponent he didn't know the skills of - thus, in this unavoidable one, he spent time learning as many of the creatures tricks as it would use at this stage in the fight.
Noah and his gang, for whatever reason it had been that they'd not joined the fight, were definitely worried about him. There was certainly also an amount of fascination at how agile he was, judging from what little he could hear from them, but he was trying not to distract himself too much with them. They were safe, and furthermore, fully capable of defending themselves if it came to it.
Once Akira felt comfortable in his ability to read the creature's tells, predict its abilities and attacks before they would be used, he moved, pulling back for a moment as he reached up at his face-
"Satan-!" He cried, pulling at a metaphysical mask - and the shape of a monstrous, six-armed, six-winged deep blue serpent flashed into existence, coiled around him, and see-through in a way that indicated intangibility, or if you were particularly determined to believe it not real, a hologram. "Let's punish some sinners, huh~?" He hissed to the Persona - before changing tack, and rushing towards the creature before him. Gods Hand was what he started with - the enormous blue serpent that was Satan moving as he did, never moving from their spot coiled around and hovering directly behind him - the both of them darting fast, taking advantage of thrown punches and too-wide swings to launch himself up, close to it's face for just long enough. Akira's mouth was wide open in a feral grin (it had been too long since he'd been able to really let loose) as he pulled an arm back as though to punch this Much Bigger Creature. And behind him, Satan moved in tandem - all three arms on the same side as Akira's, pulled back.
Akira's swing never technically hit. But it didn't need to make contact. The punch was metaversal in nature, channeled through him and swung by a creature with much more size and power - and that, DID make contact. Hard and fast and thoroughly unexpected, sending the enormous creature stumbling backwards with a cry of pain and shock.
A look at it's face - once both parties had settled - revealed that it was bleeding from the impact, though not fatally.
"Come on, you can do better than that, right? This is the first time I've been able to go all out in forever, I don't want it to stop THAT quick~!" He teased, Satan evaporating into smoke as Akira prepared to switch to something else. Fafnir was going to be his next choice, maybe. It'd be fun to take a hit straight-on and watch the force and momentum and damage of the punch be eaten up by the creature that threw it in the first place.
The creature's response was one of fury, and promised pain and death and all the things he'd heard a hundred times over. Akira didn't bother listening to any of it. His Personas sang with the urge to finally let loose. Maybe he'd pretend to start losing halfway through so all his Personas could have a go~
It'd be delicious to throw a Salvation right as the creature thought it was about to win, only to watch its ugly face as it realized it's opponent was ready for another round~

🌻 I just had a thought, what if one of the brothers was forced to use the other's weapon because they were down? and their own was lost/compromised?

I loved the first commission so much, I couldn't resist ordering another one as a parallel of sorts! This lovely drawing is by @toktopus-art. It's based on a scene from Chapter 26 of my vamp!Eddie/Steve-gets-Vecna'd fic, laughing at the broken glass.
Scene excerpt is below, and the AO3 link to the fic is on my pinned post.
Steve wished they could just stay like this, but there were only two more songs left on this A-side. “Hey, can I see your bracelet?” Eddie asked. If not for his all-too-casual tone, Steve wouldn’t have suspected anything. “Pulling out all the stops, huh?” Steve asked wryly. Eddie flashed a shameless grin at him. Chuckling, Steve tugged his sleeve down before lifting up his wrist. To his pleasant surprise, the glow-in-the-dark effect was actually noticeable. Eddie took a moment to share in the admiration of the bracelet before grabbing Steve’s hand and tugging it down. “This is better, yeah?” Eddie asked. “Huh?” Steve turned to look at him again, but Eddie was staring straight up at the sky. “Than just sitting in your car in the freezing cold by yourself, I mean.” “I had Freddie Mercury with me.” “I’m serious.” Eddie finally turned his head to face Steve again. His expression certainly matched his words. Steve couldn’t help but tense up at the shift in tone, though he was swiftly eased by the way Eddie’s thumb brushed across his knuckles. “I...hate that you even have to ask.” Steve managed to smile, even though Eddie frowned at that. “Yeah, this is better.” One song left. It wasn’t fair.

I'm giffing the latest episode and I'm constantly stopping because I'm in awe of Chris's acting. I'm not as versed in this as @wen-kexing-apologist but it's so good that I just had to say something. The thing he can do with his face just blows my mind. The conversation with San Pang is great but for me it's the hair drying scene.
Tumblr media
We can only see his head and still it's all there in his face. I wish we could see his hands cause I'm sure they are not just resting on his lap. He can't really let himself relax here. All through the episode we can see on his face the fight that's going on in his head/heart that he finally gives voice to at the end of the episode.
Just like when he's in front of the mirror in the beginning and remembering what just happened and it's all there on his face. That clenching of the jaw. Just incredible.
Tumblr media
Anyway, he's amazing and I'm just in awe of this whole show.
Also since I'm here. Yuan has grown so much and Kurt is also doing an incredible job portraying that. Most time skips are just a thing that happens and it annoys me so much when you don't actually see it in the characters. But this one I believe it. I believe Yuan was away for 4 years. I can see it in him. The confidence, the boldness but also the calmness from coming to terms with his feelings and the fact that he can't force things, and what will be, will be. Incredible work on Kurt's part.

Tumblr media
"they say the chief justice had to intervene at today's trial."
neuvillette glances up at you from his files, his hair swaying with the movement, a rippling tide. he comes to his feet when he sees you, skirting around his desk to stand in front of you.
"my assistance was required, yes."
"high drama, then. it will be the talk of the town for days."
he sighs. "i suppose it will."
there’s a cheeky retort on the tip of your tongue, but then you spot the long scratch tracing the edge of his high cheekbone, gleaming crimson in the light.
"you're hurt," you say, reaching out.
he catches your hand before you can touch him, his thumb settling into the center of your palm. he draws a small circle there, his gloves sliding against your skin, a kiss of cool water.
“neuvillette, you’re bleeding,” you say, trying to shake off his grip, but he holds firm.
he watches you carefully, searching your face for something, though you don't know what. his eyes—the color of the sea, ever-shifting, a violet-blue fathoms deep—are curious.
"such concern," he says, "for such a small thing."
"it’s not small to me."
he tilts his head. "no," he says thoughtfully. "i suppose it is not."
“let me see.”
“it is just a scratch, my dear.”
“then let me see.”
“very well.”
he lets go of your hand, though he drags his thumb against your skin, tracing the leylines of your palm. the touch lingers like a ghost. you take in a quiet breath.
you reach out and cup his face between your hands; his porcelain skin is cool to the touch. he tilts his head obediently when you turn it towards the light to better see the cut.
it’s deeper than you thought, gleaming like rubies in the light, but it’s scabbed over, already on its way to healing. you sigh.
“as i said,” neuvillette says, his voice rumbling through the room like a crashing wave. “just a scratch.”
“i’ve never seen you hurt before,” you say quietly. “i don’t like it.”
he pauses at that, his eyes flickering to yours. something passes over his face and for a moment, you don’t know him. you think of the rising tide, of how it consumes the land it laps at. how it swallows down familiar shores.
you blink and the expression is gone.
“then i shall strive to remain uninjured,” he says, bringing up a hand and cupping it over yours. he turns into your touch, brushing his lips against your palm, too light to be called a kiss.
you can’t help the little smile.
“you’d better.”

something that i've been thinking about lately is the parallels between star wars: andor/rogue one and tamora pierce's trickster's queen duology. primarily because the star wars brainrot is real and the tamora pierce obsession is forever, but also because they are kind of both tonal and thematic departures from their main 'verses in some similar ways?
in both the star wars verse and the tortall verse, the majority of the media has focused on one individual (or a small group of individuals) who make a profound difference in the world. Whether that's alanna singlehandedly finding the dominion jewel/becoming king's champion/making way for female knights, or luke skywalker blowing up the death star, or daine and numair going to the divine realms during the immortals war, or anakin skywalker becoming a sith and dooming the republic, most of the original material has seen battle and political change as something that is affected by either an actual chosen one or simply a single very plucky and well-placed individual.
trickster's queen and andor, however, really look at rebellion as something that has to be done by a diverse group of flawed people who work together despite their differences. mon mothma knows that her role is raising money. ulasim, chenaol, and the other members of the raka conspiracy each take their individual roles in the rebellion, and recognize that even though they might not want to work with aly or the luarin nobility, they need their skills and influence to make it happen.
both stories also show rebellion as extremely costly and something that requires making tough calls. nobody has their hands clean by the end of a civil war. notably, trickster's queen explicitly narrowly avoids having the protagonists kill a group of 5 year olds. luthen is ready to kill cassian when he becomes a liability, and cassian does kill lots of people, including some allies whose only "crime" is being susceptible to giving up rebellion secrets.
in rogue one, we don't like davits draven because he orders jyn's father killed, and that just feels wrong. jyn is our heroine and it upsets her, so emotionally it's distressing. but of course, draven and cassian and jyn are all working towards the same goal. draven did what he had to--galen erso is a liability as long as he's alive. dove and sarai's little brother elsren has to die because he's a direct heir to the throne, ahead of his sisters. it doesn't matter that he's five and totally innocent. as long as he lives, a luarin has a greater claim to the throne than a raka, and as long as that's true, the rebellion can't succeed.
in the star wars original trilogy, people for sure die! i'm not trying to say that they don't, but it's definitely not something that's shown affecting our protagonists on a deep, emotional level. they're all side characters, or else they come back as force ghosts. the prequels are uh. fucking tragic, but at the end of it, almost all of our heroes make it out. even the casualties of the war are droids vs clones, which is to say, totally interchangeable cannon fodder on both sides!
the number of character deaths in the tortall 'verse is fewer, probably because it's primarily created for middle grades, but even when people do die, they're either demonstrably bad people or minor enough characters that the emotional resonance isn't the same.
by contrast, at the end of trickster's queen, almost the majority of the main conspirators die in battle, not to mention those who don't even make it to the final conflict. at the end of rogue one, all of our heroes are dead, and people aren't exactly making it out of andor s1 in good shape either. more than half of the aldhani team dies on that mission.
I could go on further, but I think my main takeaway is that once you've invested a lot of time and attention and fandom into a 'verse, you have a lot more leeway to tell different kinds of stories. tamora pierce could not have written trickster's choice until after the values and world of tortall were so clearly established, and if she had, it wouldn't have had the impact that it did. similarly, part of what makes rogue one/andor so striking is the fact that it is such a departure from the preexisting values and story format of star wars.
for every chosen one we see in media, there are hundreds of people working behind the scenes to make their big, death star destroying moment possible. the only way to improve society is through collective action, and part of that is that everyone's hands are going to get dirty. i think lots of people want to imagine that they could be like luke skywalker and swoop in 2 weeks before the battle of yavin and become a hero, but the fact of the matter is that that's not how the world works! war requires us to do things that would ordinarily go against our values, but in the context of a drawn out, bloody, thankless battle, maybe we decide the ends justify the means.
