SHY GIRL GONE ROUGE! shotaro,wonbin ( `o´)_θ☆( >_<)🦷🎀🐰🍎🐼🐆❄️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m thinking shotaro/wonbin would def fall for a very sweet maybe even shy yet in a way very outspoken and feisty I’m thinking poc!reader half black half Korean??
You loved commentary videos very engaged in the problems of today you were very self-aware and understanding of the world around you and liked educating yourself about it.
This became a big interest and you started a blog/Insta acc/ Tumblr acc and would write.
They’d spread around the school like wildfire and ended up having mixed reactions from the public even making news headlines once with your popular writing ‘What are you, gay?’ going into depth about the way boys treated the women around them “You know… I blame the world for all the homophobia if it weren't for that maybe you boys would be more open about your sexuality! wouldn’t have to spread all that bottle-up hatred for women :< it's sad. lol!” other popular writing being ‘You are not a mama's boy, you're a bitch boy… yikes!’ and ‘Stop the stupidness we know you want your best buddies boyfriend( •́દ•̩̥̀ )’
You went into it anonymously and very very young. it's not your fault! Yu didn't think you'd get attention!
So all the hate and people in school finding out who you were, was not good for your mental health, especially being the type to give all the fucks about people's opinions. Over time you became used to it but grew out of your writings and when you were 16 your interest in K-pop peaked and surely grew.
Being SM's first black girl (in a v popular group may I add) was one thing but being in a risky ass scandal is another we ALL know SM doesn't play. And these dumbass haters?? don’t even get me started But surprisingly to SM, it wasn't all that bad I mean “A couple of unoriginal opinions from a 14-year-old is just silly! Nothing that hasn't been thought of already! Nothing to hate lol T-T” Read the apology.
Wow, you could already see the admiration on his face. Bro is so intrigued. (*´∀`*)
You ended up seeing him everywhere you'd be hanging out in the dining area listening to music and suddenly plop an awkward taro/bin ordering your favorite drink a couple of feet in front of you… and of course, taking notice of this.
Tumblr media
MAYBEEE this could be like a series?? Pt2?? IDKK you guys would have to lmk lol i hope you enjoyed and not all my stuff is going to be like this, just something i really enjoy!! ☺️☺️🤗

My dear lgbt+ kids,
I've been really into Stray Kids (the band) lately. I am listening to their songs a lot and have watched many of their music videos, performances etc. - so many that my Youtube recommendations are 100% Stray Kids-related now. If you wonder why I am telling you this, it's because I decided to turn this blog into a K-Pop Stan account.
Gender stuff is important but I'm just much more passionate about Lee Felix's deep voice right now and I hope we can embark on this new journey together... and yes, I am obviously kidding about this.
The real reason is that he got me thinking about gender stuff.
More specifically, my Youtube recommendations did. They show me a lot of fan-made videos - and a surprising amount of them center around physical touch. "10 minutes of Stray Kids being cuddlebugs", "7 minutes of Stray Kids kissing each other", things like that.
You may think "Oh, cute" or "Yikes, problematic" right now. When I look into the comments of such videos, the latter one seems to be the reaction of many people - and they have good points. It's easy to forget that band members are actual people who are co-workers in real life and that a high "fan demand" of physical contact between them may put real pressure with real consequences on them. There is also the obvious issue of ignoring cultural differences and pushing American standards on them (regarding how much and which kinds of touch are "normal" etc.).
With all that said: those videos are evidently very popular - and I don't think it's fair to dismiss it as nothing but voyeuristic stalker behavior. Their popularity is a sign that it fulfills some kind of need. Next to the comments calling these videos out, there are also plenty of people talking about how warm and happy and calm these videos make them feel. And honestly, after watching a few myself, I do see the appeal. Watching them be openly affectionate with each other is a feel-good thing - and a big part of that is probably that they are all men.
The cultural differences come in play there. The unspoken rule in my country seems to be that men do not touch each other unless it's in either a violent or an explicitly sexual context. Male friends don't hold hands or kiss or cuddle or play with each other's hair. Platonic touch between men just isn't a thing. And I am not even American - I believe it's even worse over there.
It's easy to shrug your shoulder now and think "Nobody is stopping men but their own homophobia." and yes, there are obviously the Aggressively Heterosexual Dudes™ who would rather die than have their male friend perform CPR on them because that's too gay for them - but it's oversimplifying it to say that this is the only issue. Deeply ingrained cultural structures just aren't that easy to break on an individual level, not even for men who are far from aggressively heterosexual (or far from heterosexual at all), even though society as a whole would benefit from it.
We were made for a gentle touch. That sounds unnecessarily poetic but it's true. It's one of the main ways human beings communicate. Just think about babies. You could provide them with plenty of the most nourishing food and buy them the most expensive stuff - if nobody ever touches them gently, they are not gonna grow up healthy. It may be a myth that everyone needs 8 hugs a day, individual people have individual needs, but touch is a basic human need.
And yet, society tells us to rely on one person alone to fulfill that need: a romantic partner. Being in a relationship is one of the only "acceptable" ways to fulfill it, especially for men. The possibility of a hug leading to sex somehow makes it a masculine thing. According to the unspoken cultural rules, men can even touch each other... as long as they touch to f*ck.
And that brings us back to the duality of those Stray Kids videos: If you watch a video like that and it has no commentary within itself, no fixed message on how you are supposed to interpret it, if it's genuinely just a compilation of men kissing and hugging and holding hands - how do you interpret it? Which cultural rules influence your interpretation? And if people can interpret it in ways that play directly into toxic cultural structures, does that mean these videos are merely an extension of those toxic rules - or could they be a welcome antidote? A safe space for people to experience and explore platonic male intimacy in ways that they may rarely get to in their own country?
Could they be a mixture of both?
With all my love,
Your Tumblr Dad

✨ 181228 - Key’s interview with K-Style
Tumblr media
SHINee's Key released first solo mini album 'Hologram'
"'KEY LAND' is my country in SHINee World"
– Congratulations on the release of Japan solo debut 1st mini album! First of all, please tell us the meaning of the title and the feelings you put in the album.
Key: There were a couple of songs candidates to be the title track but "Hologram" was chosen in the moment when I listened to it and could imagine myself singing it on the stage. As the whole concept and choreography and so on immediately came to my mind, I decided to make this song the title track. As for the concept of the album I wanted to make it feel like the nostalgia of the 90's and I selected (the songs) from something other than "群青の夜 ~One of Those Nights~ (Japanese Version).
– Do you usually think of images when you listen to or choose songs?
Key: I think that songs like that (which an image comes to mind) are the good songs (laughs).
– "Hologram" has 5 songs, please tell us the story related to each song such as the contents of the lyrics and melodies, the points that you like and the memories at the time of recording.
1. Hologram:
Key: This song is a 90's old school. I think that song recalled me a nostalgic feeling at the time (of recording). It's my favorite genre of song, so it's fun to sing it. I think that everyone who listens to it will get some nostalgic memories.
2. Why Are You Here (feat. CoCo)
Key: The second song is about a broken heart. Since my image is pop, there may be people saying that they can't imagine me singing about disappointed feelings (laughs). Moreover, in a duet with a female singer, the content of the lyrics is about an encounter by chance at a party after a break up (laugh). But I would like to sing sad themed songs one more time.
3. POWER
Key: The 3rd track is a song made by TETSUYA of L'Arc~en~Ciel. When I was a junior high school student, L'Arc was very popular in Korea. It's such a famous band that everyone listened to at school, so I was very happy that I got a song from someone like him. The lyrics are very powerful, and I personally love them. I think that's a song that could be included in SHINee's album.
4. City Girl
Key: The fourth song, "City Girl," is a fresh and stylish song. But these days, we don't use the words “city girl” or “city boy” very often (laughs). That's connected to the concept of 90's. Since I had a desire to put songs of various genres in this album, wanted to include ithis song also in that meaning, and I think that it is a song that makes you feel fresh.
5. 群青の夜 ~One of Those Nights~ (Japanese Version)
Key: The fifth song, "群青の夜 ~One of Those Nights~" was also the title song of the album released in Korea, so I made it because I thought Japanese fans would like to listen to the version of the song sung with Japanese lyrics. The MV is also made in the Korean version and Japanese version.
– It seems that this MV was released a few days ago at the solo event 'KEY LAND' held in Kobe and Tokyo.
Key: That's right. But I don't think everyone watched the MV (properly) with so much MCing during it (laughs). I tried to set up such a corner with an image of everyone watching a movie together at the theater in "KEY LAND". With a style like a commentary video, I was explaining while watching the MV.
- Is there anything that makes you feel that something is different when you sing 'One of Those Nights' in Korean and Japanese versions?
Key: The singer Crush featured in the Korean version but the Japanese version is just me singing on my own. Lyrics remain the same feeling, so there is no change there. Speaking of a big change, in the title of the song, “센척안해” (“I don't wanna be strong") is the title of the Korean version, I thought it would sound weird if I literally translated it into Japanese (laughs). I wish it could be like the Korean title, but in Japanese it would be kind of... That's why it became “群青の夜” ("A deep blue night").
– I heard that the album's artwork was handled by the illustrator Chocomoo. How was it when you saw the finished design?
Key: I was very happy the moment I saw the artwork. Actually, Chocomoo is actually a friend of mine. However, it was not my request because I was a friend but a proposal from the company. Chocomoo draws illustrations using only white and black, but this time she changed the colors for my album. I was very happy that she took this big challenge as an artist. I had nothing to suggest but the color. Other than this color, there were other versions such as yellow and blue, but the album was titled 'Hologram', so I chose the hologram color.
- I heard that the first limited edition comes with a photo book celebrating your first solo work. You are famous for being fashionable, but please tell me your particular favorite outfit and preferences.
Key: I had the photo shooting at the same time when I made a Korean solo album, but I wanted to take some separate pictures that can only be seen in the Japanese album, so I prepared it specially. That's why the outfit and atmosphere are different from those in the Korean album. I think those who bought the Korean album will feel the difference. The concept of the album was "I want to show you a lot of things," so I shot it in street fashion clothes, suits, and many other outfits. I'm satisfied because I was able to take pictures outside and show many sides of myself.
- You have just released an album in Korea, and there was also a mini album release and live performance in Japan. Please tell me why you wanted to accomplish these two things in a short time.
Key: Actually, I've been talking about whether I'd like to do solo activities for a long time. But I kept thinking “Not now”. I still have a lot of work to do to have a solo activity. I'm not completely ready yet. But since the beginning of this year, I've been talking about my solo career again, and I've decided to do it at the end of the year, so I started preparing for it. If I were to release an album in Korea, I would like to release an album in Japan and have a conceet, so I prepared it at the same time.
– What was the biggest reason you thought you couldn't do solo work until this year?
Key: I was quite scared. That's why I wanted to work harder and start my solo career after getting many people to know about the name “Key” and its charms. I was afraid because I was not ready. But when I thought I was ready, my fear disappeared.
– This member of SHINee, Taemin, has just completed a long tour in Japan this year. Did Taemin encourage you to do your first solo concert in Japan this time?
Key: “‘Hologram’ is really good!” was all he said (laughs). On the other hand, I told Taemin: "I respect you!". It was my first time singing in a studio for hours to record a solo album, and then appearing on a variety show on my own... I called Taemin with a feeling of sincere respect (laughs). No, but it's amazing (that he could do all that on his own).
– And what Taemin said?
Key: He sent me some Chinese herbal medicine that would give me energy, expensive stuff! (laughs) I took it before the concert in Japan, so I got some energy.
– Did you have fun on your first solo live?
Key: Yes, I had fun. Although it's not my first time standing on the stage on my own. I also did a solo stage at SHINee's concert, so singing on my own is not a problem. But the MC part... It's a bit difficult for me to speak all on my own. You can't have a break, you must impose the atmosphere yourself. There is no one to talk to except me (laughs).
– Taemin said the same thing previously. At solo concerts there is no one else to talk, so he would rather handle the MC parts together with SHINee.
Key: Oh, really? (Our thoughts match) at this proportion... (laughs).
– The title "KEY LAND" was also very nice. What meaning did you put in it?
Key: Actually, the image of "KEY LAND" has been around since a long time ago. I don't remember clearly when it was created. Because I always think about the stage and the music, this idea was born before I knew it. The image of "KEY LAND" is like my own country in "SHINee World". Since it's a land in the world, the image is perfect.
– The items (merch) of this live performance was in a collaboration with LITTLE SUNNY BITE, and you also decided yourself what would be the items, materials and colors. What made you decide for this collaboration?
Key: It will be my first performance of "KEYLAND", so I thought it would be a cake if it were to be my birthday or an anniversary. Then, I thought LITTLE SUNNY BITE would be perfect for that image, so I took a picture of the cake and made it a motif. Also, I made a mini bag logo with the image of Halloween or Christmas party. What I think is the cutest is the mini bag. But I can't use it because I'm a man and (the bag) is pink (laughs). But I think it's the cutest.
– There's only a few days until 2018 ends. What kind of year it was for you? How do you expect the next year to be?
Key: If I could say something to myself, I would like to say "You did your best". As a SHINee member and as solo artist. The year will end soon and peacefully, and I want to continue the next year with this same spirit/energy. If in the next year I work as hard as I did this year, there's not really much to say.
– Is there anything you would like to do next year? By the way, Taemin said he wants to climb Mt. Fuji.
Key: What, just like this?! (laughs) I will be 29 years old next year. In Korean age. So, I want to taste the feeling of being close to 30 years old. I'm looking forward to becoming 30 years old. I had my debut as a teenager and have spent all my twenties with SHINee so l'm looking forward to see what kind of person I will become in my 30s.

So I've read some of your older posts and see that you've mentioned Taemin a few times. I know these are your Bangtan thoughts but could you elaborate on your love for Taemin? If it is love or whatever it is that you have for Taemin.
Anon 2
Hi, BMT!
I don’t really have a BTS-related question, but anyway, I just realized Taemin has only a little over a month until he’s discharged from the military and I’m so looking forward to his comeback ?What are your favorite Taemin songs (Shinee, too, while we’re at it)? I loved ‘Advice,’ it honestly was probably one of, if not his best banger (I might even go out on a limb and suggest it’s one of the best K-pop songs I’ve ever heard), and he dropped it and was out. I can’t wait to see what he does next!
In Taemin's case, I'd say it's more about admiration and appreciation for what he does. Of course I like the personality and entertainment part of his job as an idol but the artistic side is what grabbed my attention and that stuck to me.
It's easy to see how involved he is in his solo career because he has a vision. One that can be observed throughout his albums, and not just once. Yes, different concepts, but there's also an overall theme that encapsulates his entire work. To me, that shows not only his individuality and creativity, but also that there's something of substance there and not just aesthetics. All you have to do is listen to his albums and watch all the music videos and you would be able to observe an evolution as well in terms of complexity and usage of the visual medium. Taemin was in film school and he's also a film buff and that shows as well in his concepts. Criminal is a good example here because he was partly inspired by The Devil's Advocate. I know it sounds biased because I come from a film background as well, but it's not just about that. I like how he takes inspiration from various mediums and arts in order to elevate his concepts. And he's deeply involved in the process making, on a technical level. Not many are doing this.
And lastly, I appreciate the way he is able to talk and articulate the concept behind his albums in terms of music, lyrics, visual elements and detail explanation of his movements in choreography and what each represents and the message he sends out. I think that really set the standard for me when it comes to idols talking about their work because it showed that it's possible. And it's not like Taemin's themes are very easy to digest and just cutesy pop. There's a lot of commentary there on gender, sexuality, relationships, even his catholic background. And still, he is able to talk about it in a way that sounds meaningful. It's not about revealing everything that is inside a person, but about knowing what to say in order for the audience to understand if they are willing to.
As to the second ask, I'm excited for him to be back, it feels like ages, but it's almost there. I think the first comeback will be with SHINee in May so I'm looking forward to that.
I'm going to end this with a list of a few of my favorite songs and my choice here is influenced by the music video as well.

2️⃣3️⃣ BANGERS FROM 2023 🎶
I listened to a lot of music in 2023!!! I love music!! There was sooooo much new-to-me music that I found this year, especially since I really committed to listening more widely to k-pop.
BUT if I made a list of new-to-me music I enjoyed this year we would be here forever, so I've made a list of 23 songs that came out in 2023 that made my year, and that I wanted to share with people. Enjoy!!! (I stuck to one song per artist, with one exception.)
Commentary under the cut!
Memories, RIIZE – What can I say; they're my boys of 2023. This is probably not going to be their sound going forward but I'm so glad they put it out as their first ever full song, because it's the perfect boyband song and it hooked me from day one.
Baggy Jeans, NCT U – This is Thee song of 2023. I will entertain no arguments on that.
The Last One, Maisie Peters – This did the same thing to my brain this year that Taylor Swift's Long Live did to it in 2010 which I think says everything.
Angel Eyes, NCT 127 – Yes, I realize NCT 127 is most known for crazy anti-music. This is like... anti-anti-music. It's Doyoung Does Journey. It's perfect in every way and I love it so much.
Naked In Manhattan, Chappell Roan – I realize this technically came out as a single in 2022 but I didn't appreciate it then and when I was picking a song off The Rise & Fall Of A Midwestern Princess it had to be this one, for me.
get him back!, Olivia Rodrigo – Everyone loves it for a reason, the reason is because it rules.
Something To Believe In, Kesha – If you haven't listened to Kesha's album from this year do yourself a favor and go do so right now. It's discomfiting and gorgeous.
CAKE, KARD – I dunno why I thought KARD was going to be music for heterosexuals. It is not music for heterosexuals. Watch the dance practice to see a giant LA frat-adjacent boy serve cunt.
On My Youth (English Version), WayV – This whole album rules but this stands out to me as a really great song that works perfectly both in Chinese and in English. They really sell it and it slaps. Also, the dance challenge they did for it stands out as the most fun one I saw all year, which really has nothing to do with the song but made me follow them on Instagram and now I'm obsessed with them.
Paint The Town Red, Doja Cat – Another one where it's just like... The Masses Are Correct. It's great.
Good Enough, CHANYEOL – This song makes my entire body and brain relax.
Beautiful Liar, MONSTA X – Classic Monsta X, fun and exciting and interesting and cool as hell. Video rules. So grateful we got this before they all had to enlist this year.
Back for More (with Anitta), TOMORROW X TOGETHER – The squawk of outrage that I made when I watched this video for the first time and Kai was hot in it.........also it was on repeat for a solid 4 weeks. It's catchy, Anita's part is great, and it ruined my life a little.
Get it? Got it? Good (feat. Amber Liu), Jessica – A late addition that is on repeat as we speak. Proof that a good hook is magic, IMO.
I AM, IVE – I'm ashamed that it took seeing IVE in concert to realize how fucking great they are, but they are so great, and this entire album is so solid with this song as the glittering diamond in it.
Voice, JOOHONEY – This one also feels a bit like cheating because I actually heard it in 2022, in concert. But it came out this year on Jooheon's solo album, and it's just... so, so good, and it makes me feel so much.
God Of Music, SEVENTEEN – I went back and forth between this and Super, but in the end, this won out for sounding like a party in progress, and being the Seventeen song that made me really take a second look at them and promptly fall down the rabbit hole. It's so fucking good, and it's so fucking fun, and they deserve all the recognition they got this year.
TOPLINE (Feat. Tiger JK), Stray Kids – A very Stray Kids song, by Stray Kids. I think it's my favorite from them this year, though there's definitely competition. This is winning due to the amount that I sing along to it in my kitchen.
BOUNCY (K-HOT CHILLI PEPPERS), ATEEZ – ATEEZ are more my boys-in-law than my boys, but far be it from me to deny that BOUNCY is one of the songs of the year. I cannot put that shit on without dancing along.
One Kiss, Red Velvet – Chill Kill is a phenomenal album front to back, but this song stands out as soooo perfect. Throwback vibes but feels contemporary, great vocals, lots of fun.
Guilty, TAEMIN – Primarily I'm obsessed with the artistic choices Taemin made on this album, but even discounting that, this song is a masterpiece.
NO PROBLEM (Feat. Felix of Stray Kids), NAYEON – This is a light, fun, kind of soothing bop which, if it were anyone else who'd featured I'd have probably been like "why did you ruin it with a random feature", but somehow since it's Felix featured he just brightens it up even further. I love it.
Talk Saxy, RIIZE – Yeah, of course this was going to be the artist who got two. What can I say. I was skeptical when the title "Talk Saxy" dropped, and then was made to eat my words so thoroughly I am now obligated to talk up Talk Saxy every time RIIZE comes up for the rest of my life. A perfect boyband bop, goofily age appropriate song, great dance, great vocals, good boys. Made me so excited about their future and sealed the being obsessed with them deal. Hashtag Stan RIIZE.

Hi, not necessarily jikook related, but I wanted your opinion about something of the perilla leaf discussion that I haven’t seen mentioned.
One thing I really don’t like about K-pop in general is the gatekeeping of the artists, so much so that if they are found out to have a SO it’s a huge scandal. I think two idols posted “apology” posts for their fans when they got married/had kids. Now I know this is something cultural that I clearly cannot wrap my head around, but I find it quite sad.
So back to BTS, I was very surprised about the perilla leaf discussion because it was them admitting (albeit indirectly) that they date and have relationships. Hopefully it is not news to anyone that men in their middle-to-late twenties date, but seeing the culture around Kpop in general I thought it was very cool that hybe would release that video (not to mention the whole gender neutral language use that dalloga explained).
I know it’s nothing but maybe one day the culture around idols can change (not that they should disclose their relationship status, just you know live their life knowing that if their relationship is founding out/they want to disclose it they don’t risk losing their careers).
A-HA. This is the commentary on the perilla leaf I was looking for. Thanks, nice anon! Here, please enjoy a pretty Jeon-Park hug-and-rub because NOTHING TO SEE HERE NOBODY DATING ANYONE AHEM (and thanks to phorenjj on twt for it because i stole it from them LOOK AT JEIKEI'S HAND) :
This stuck out to me and I have a call later with Kevin for oppa reasons (he hovers, lately) so I'm gonna ask him. About the perilla leaf thing, not about JeiKei's hand. Because I agree with you.
I haven't seen @dalloga 's explanation but I love her so whatever she said is definitely correct. For me I just noticed that the word used was gender neutral in Korean. It just means "partner" basically and can be used for any gender, so it was a good choice and I was happy to hear it. My spoken Korean is truly awful but I know a little bit. Kev's trying y'all. HE'S TRYING. Regardless, the intent was there not to say "girlfriend" or "boyfriend" specifically but to punt that word in favor of a gender neutral term, and I appreciated that. AND HOLY CATS YES I have been hoping someone would bring up the "oh hey we are adults who, y'know, peel perilla leaves and have partners and do adult sex things" because THIS IS SO UNUSUAL FOR KOREAN ARTISTS. Y'all know this is very out of the ordinary when just last year iKON's Bobby had to apologize to fans for getting married and fathering a child. In 2020 EXO's Chen did the same, even though he did not say he was sorry when his wife had their second child in January. It's an issue. We've seen how stans handled Tae's probable girlfriend and his response to that fairly recently. These guys even THINK about showing up with a woman (god forbid a man) and we like to think ARMY would be cool with it but based on my observations, that is NOT THE CASE. Maybe half of us would be fine, even supportive, but there are real, actual dangerous solo stans out there who could and would present a physical threat to the safety of ANY significant other. There's a whole slew of reasons our guys have ALL stayed "single" all this time, even though it's very likely that the majority of them are involved outside the group and two of them have been a couple for years. And I do think Bang and Co. are supportive of, IDK, letting grown ass adults be, IDK, grown ass adults. Which, in K-pop, is refreshing. I dunno if it's just BTS or if they'll do the same for other groups. I hope they do.
Speaking of whom, have some pretty Jikook doing that photoshoot hug.

Through Breakups and Heartbreaks, TOMORROW X TOGETHER Shares All the Feels in Its New Spotify Enhanced Album
Tumblr media
K-Pop fans, Spotify has a treat for you. Today, South Korean boy band TOMORROW X TOGETHER is releasing its fourth mini album, minisode 2: Thursday’s Child, and Spotify listeners have access to an exclusive enhanced version of the album.
This new five-track album follows the story of the boy who fell in love in the band’s previous album series, The Chaos Chapter. In minisode 2: Thursday’s Child that boy experiences a breakup with his first love. Fans will experience three themes (hate, end, mess) as they listen to the group’s tracks, which feature a mix of hardcore rock, hip-hop, and R&B.
The enhanced album, available only on Spotify, includes never-before-seen content. Fans have access to new videos, storylines (which are personal written commentaries from the band on each track), and audio liners, where the band members give insight into the songs. The enhanced album also features videos of the individual members of the group talking about the fun they had and the memories they shared while creating the new music.
Tumblr media
“We are thrilled to present this new, immersive content to MOA and all listeners on Spotify,” said TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s leader, SOOBIN. “We put tremendous effort into making our new album and collaborating with Spotify, so we hope you enjoy the special behind-the-scenes experience and feel a deeper connection through our exclusive, personally curated content.”
For the Record chatted with members of TOMORROW X TOGETHER to learn more about their new album.
What can fans expect in the new album,
minisode 2: Thursday’s Child
?
SOOBIN: Through this new EP, we showcase a side of ourselves that we’ve never shown before. We tried to express how one could be corrupted and changed by his first heartbreak. The lead single “Good Boy Gone Bad” has some fantastic choreography that’s sure to make a lasting impression in your minds, so be sure to check it out!
In what ways does the enhanced album share more about the intent behind your new music for fans and new listeners worldwide?
SOOBIN: I hope our fans, MOA [Moments of Alwaysness], will be able to dive deeper into the EP as they listen to the behind-the-scenes stories and the episodes that we reveal for the first time.
YEONJUN: We all had a great time discussing the album in such depth. In the process, I’ve definitely grown more attached to every song.
BEOMGYU: We had a heart-to-heart talk on each of the tracks from the album, and I hope our MOA will love it too. Also, I really enjoyed thinking back to the emotions I had while working on and recording each song.
TAEHYUN: It’s some great content. We go into detail about how each member tackled the recording process. Listening to how each song came to be definitely makes me appreciate them more.
HUENINGKAI: I have so much love for this EP, especially with all the effort and passion we all put into it. It’s our first unit track, so the producer and YEONJUN and I talked a lot about how we want this track to feel. I hope our intentions are delivered to you successfully.
What messages do you want people to take from your music?
SOOBIN: Through music, we always strive to give voice to what many people feel and experience throughout their lives. We pursue music that many people can empathize with and relate to. We would like to be remembered as artists who are not confined by genre. We want to become artists who linger on in your minds even as time goes by.
What figures have most influenced your music and your artwork?
SOOBIN: I watched a lot of shows that deal with love and heartbreak. I took these works as inspiration to delve into and understand these emotions with more depth.
HUENINGKAI: Since I was a child, I have admired my dad. And I have been inspired by many artists, like Bruno Mars and Christopher, since I was a trainee.
YEONJUN: For this album, I was inspired by Post Malone’s music.
BEOMGYU: I referenced some TV shows as well, but I also think all people go through heartbreak or farewell in one form or another, whatever that may be. While working on this album, I tried to think back and put myself in those shoes.
TAEHYUN: I was inspired by The Weeknd’s albums and by a friend who had recently been through a breakup.
As you look to TOMORROW (the future), what are your goals as a group TOGETHER?
As a group, we still want to meet and enjoy being with MOA from all over the world.

everything wrong with kpop stans: racism, kpop culture, problematic SUPER fans
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPeE7YKCZM8 | Full commentary in the linked video.
Tumblr media
The main way that the Kpop Culture is problematic is through the commodification of other cultures i.e. using OTHER PEOPLE’S cultures as props. As you guys can just see, it just isn't black culture that the kpop industry uses but seeing as I’m black I’m going to be talking about how black culture is ABUSED by the kpop industry.
Tumblr media
We all know that K-pop is heavily inspired by black culture… but with the way, K-pop continually antagonizes black people you would never know. This is what traditional Korean music sounded like before the influence of American (specifically black culture) 1:09 and this is what K-pop music sounds like now with the influence of black culture 1:20.
Despite not being black or having any relation to blackness, many kpop idols will overcompensate their closeness to black culture by trying to be seen as more thug/hood… A lot of these artists will get traditionally black hairstyles in order to let people know that they should be perceived as more gangster/more hood… and mainly more black.
Tumblr media
And no matter what part of mainstream Korean culture you look at this issue of cultural appropriation/the terrible mimicry of Black people is present. You can see this on popular talk shows… and especially if the person in question is supposed to be a rapper… I.e. Lisa … and almost every problematic male K rapper.

TBH, I’m very wary of people who only follow BTS. I think it really feeds into false idea that BTS are just completely different from the rest of kpop when that’s their home, where they gained so much of their identity. The idea that no other Korean artist can make good music puts a bad taste in my mouth.
Like Jackson Wang came out with Blow this year and it was a STUNNING music video and song, definitely better than Butter and PTD. I get it if you explored other artists and don’t vibe with them but never looking into them in the first place is dumb. BTS is still my ult group alongside Ateez. But please understand that it’s hard to take army onlys seriously when you don’t listen to rest of the genre. It’s like picking up Twilight and going wow this is representative of the entire vampire genre (obvi BTS is better than Twilight lol).
I appreciate your commentary of Jikook but wanted to put out the idea that I really, really recommend giving kpop a proper chance and not as competitive to BTS supremancy.
- Signed, a former BTS only who now follows 10+ groups
Your post is full of too many assumptions, anon. That never ends well. I had listened to other K-pop groups before I succumbed to BTS and didn't like them. That's one of the reasons why I didn't want to get interested in BTS because I thought they sounded the same or were the same as the groups I had already seen and didn't like. I came to the fandom in late 2020 shortly before the award season in Korea started. I watched all or all of the shows that BTS participated in and since I didn't know when they were going to perform I watched all the shows, I mean I watched the performances of other groups and I just didn't like them. It doesn't mean that I think the other groups are bad, it's just that their music doesn't match my taste in music. Music is about taste anon. The other groups in general don't appeal to my musical tastes or preferences. Thanks to TikTok I have mainly listened to bits and pieces of songs from other K-pop groups and although I think they are catchy they are not catchy enough to add them to a playlist on my Spotify account, for example. To say that you won't take me seriously because I only like bts is absurd and honestly anon, who do you think you are? I do think BTS is different from other K-pop groups. That doesn't mean they're better, just that they're different. That their sound, their music is different. There are many groups that are talented but don't appeal to my tastes. It's not that complicated to understand and I think it's something that should be respected. And I know that happens to a lot of other people as well. That's why we make the distinction that we are BTS fans and not kpop fans.
-Signed, a BTS fan who is only interested in BTS.

[NEWS] Xiumin - 221017 Vanity Teen: “XIUMIN: A Fresh Start for an Industry Icon”
"The SM Entertainment group EXO and its insanely skilled members are crucial pieces to the overall legacy of K-pop, widely perceived as a chart-topping, vocally adept selection of artists. Now, after a decade of (regularly) selling millions of albums and inspiring countless individuals around the world – the group’s trailblazing powerhouse XIUMIN (@e_xiu_o) has officially received his first solo maneuver with the debut EP Brand New to showcase his staggering talent without limitations. However, when it comes to XIUMIN, is it even possible to expect anything less than perfection?
Throughout XIUMIN’s comprehensive addition to the influential group’s discography, the singer organically acquired a following for his innate sense of comedic timing, and of course, a voice that can mesmerize the masses. Even as recent as this month, the charming singer continues to have his personality praised courtesy of his commentary regarding cleanliness or more sincerely, having a genuinely humble perception of his own career. So at this point in time, XIUMIN continues to construct an evolutionary career, with his recent solo deep-dive cementing that he’s one of the most admirable artists in the game.
For the freshly-crafted EP Brand New, the singer and dancer revisits a few of his treasured childhood inspirations with a ‘90s R&B sentimentality that electrifies, or on occasion, an exceptional degree of pensive vulnerability. With the title track “Brand New”, XIUMIN seizes the opportunity for his optimal moment in the spotlight, utilizing enthusiastic and retro-themed inclusions that’ll encourage you to move – but still unveiling an ambitious vocal range that’s clearly within the esteemed performer’s reserve.
As the album unfolds it becomes crystal clear that even with his expertise, XIUMIN’s newfound creativity is channeled into a breathtaking timeless story about finding your footing while pursuing your dreams and the universal importance of stepping into your own power. As our new Vanity Teen Magazine digital cover star, K-pop titan XIUMIN is breaking down his diverse solo journey, the EXO effect, and some wildly entertaining behind-the-scenes stories of his very first music video in what we’d describe as the most endearing Zoom call imaginable.
First and foremost, congratulations on your remarkable solo debut with Brand New! This is such a pivotal moment, so I can’t imagine what you must be feeling now that it’s finally been released! When you first set out on this project, what was your primary goal or inspiration behind the album?
XIUMIN: A lot of fans have been waiting for me to have the chance to perform and be on stage again! It’s been almost three and a half years since I performed as an artist, so I wanted to dedicate this album to my fans who have been waiting and anticipating my music and career. When I first decided on this album I was hoping to bring joy and happiness to [my supporters] so rather than focusing on specific goals or records, I really wanted to focus on dedicating and presenting them with the gift of my solo EP. And also, to create happy memories with them through my own music!
Coming from the juggernaut group EXO, you’ve been consistently surrounded by music, so I’d imagine this moment has crossed your mind more than a few times. How would you say your cumulative discography with EXO has helped shape your own solo music?
XIUMIN: As you know from various songs and performances by EXO, I was able to try out different types of performances and genres that are all very different and unique. Those experiences with group activities helped me to understand and figure out the mood and vibe of songs with much more ease. So even when I was recording, it was a lot easier for me to figure out – and truly find the real soul and vibe of every single song. In terms of the performance, just like the recording process, I was able to approach the choreography a bit easier because I had a lot of experience with synchronized choreography from EXO. So overall, I’d say that the group helped me build a foundation in several ways, including helping me prepare my solo music with much more readiness and professionalism.
As an introduction to XIUMIN the soloist, I have to say that “Brand New” is such a perfect track in every perceivable aspect! Did you face any nerves taking on such a high-energy R&B/Pop track on your own, or was this something that felt like an exciting challenge?
XIUMIN: More focusing on the song itself, one concern I had was filling the song from start to finish with just my voice. As you know, in a group song there are a lot of different voices, energy, or tones that are added within a single track. Because of that, I was worried that filling an entire song on my own could sound very mundane or too similar throughout, so I was trying my best to give more dynamics and bring out various changes within my voice. In order to prepare for that, I took vocal lessons and tips about how to bring out the most charms as possible from my own voice. I also recorded the song several times in order to find the perfect version that was heard in the final product, but the overall process of preparing for my solo EP was exciting, and a fun challenge throughout!
Of course, there’s a music video element to appreciate with this era, and it’s a solid mix of precision, style, and even a bit of humor, so there’s no shortage of storytelling! What was probably the most memorable piece of your debut-video experience?
XIUMIN: So a little bit of behind-the-scenes on the [“Brand New”] music video… The process for the video was very dynamic, so we filmed it over two separate shoots in total. In the first shoot, I recall my pants exploding in the middle of a scene, right from the beginning of the shoot [laughs]. And it was followed by an outdoor dance break which was interrupted when it started pouring rain in the middle of the shoot.
And for the indoor shoot, there was actually a small prop that caught on fire… [laughs]. Despite all these mishaps and potential crises that we dealt with… the entire staff met them with a lot of positivity, good energy, and happiness, so I’ll always remember it as a happy memory because everyone was saying that everything good can happen now [after the mishaps occured], which I really enjoy reminiscing about. And, I like to now say that because of all those mishaps in the music video, I believe that all my promotional activities have been proceeding very smoothly without any problems so far!
“How We Do” is a very inviting and nostalgia-heavy song that has effortless confidence to it! What variety of music generally evokes that all-important feeling for you?
XIUMIN: Ever since I was young, I remember just purely loving and enjoying the experience of listening to music, and just being surrounded by music. One of the genres that I listened to the most was the New jack swing style which you can hear in my Brand New EP, so when I came back to this genre for my solo debut, I had a big sense of nostalgia and familiarity, and I felt a lot of comfort recording the song which allowed me to naturally bring out my confidence. This entire recording experience and genre of music helped me remember once again how much I love music and this style of music, so all of it felt very familiar to me.
Then we have “Love Letter” which is a very purposeful and reflective track, with a masterful presentation of vocal abilities. What would you say is one moment or memory throughout your remarkable career that you similarly hold closest to your heart?
XIUMIN: The moment that I actually recall the most in my career was a special fansign and performance event prior to my military enlistment. I remember the first night of my two-year enlistment, I recalled that very moment and thought about how important all of the fans are to me, and it’s something that I’ll never forget not only within the context of my career but in my life. It’s something that really impacted the importance of my feelings for [EXO-L] and it’s a feeling that’s been maintained through this EP because I think [Brand New] reflects a lot of my love, care, and overall fondness that I have for my fans.
You close out the mini-album with “Serenity” and its warm production offers listeners that exact sensation within seconds. What overall ideas or feelings do you hope that listeners leave the Brand New mini-album with?
XIUMIN: The Brand New album has a total of five tracks, and each song has its own unique style. So with all of them, I really wanted to try to bring out various diverse emotions instead of one singular theme or emotion. Most notably, I wanted to showcase some sort of fun and sense of enjoyment, as well as a refreshing feeling that comes from originality. There was also some anticipation, part confidence, love, feelings of excitement, and of course, serenity, like the last song. And hope! Each of these tracks has a symbolic theme and emotion and I hope that fans are able to feel that, experience it, and take that away from my first album."

BPP, would you know if the live band that performed in Busan is Ghost Band? Or is it an entirely different one? Because I came across this https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSRsgVxgG/ and I don’t recognize the drummer????
Sidenote but this set is fucking awesome!!! All the sets were awesome like I’m still shook every time I rewatch, it’s like whenever I do I find something new about this remix that surprises me every time. The commentary in the video is so right, the drummer and the whole band really helped make the song grittier. Also love love love the fact that BH/BTS never hesitate to hire POC artists, I don’t think I’ve ever seen artists, much less kpop, to consistently take on POC to work with them, and they slay every time!!!!
**
(More Busan concert drafts)
Hi Anon,
Your link.
It wasn't Ghost that played with the tannies in Busan. The 4-piece band comprised Al Cleveland III on drums (in the Tiktok), Kenji Chan on guitar, Pierre Jameson on the keyboard and synths, and Matt Hines on the bass. It was Kenji and Matt that were the guys playing with Hobi and Jimin on stage during the ments.
In Ghost, you're right it's Khan Sikyoon on the drums... a very different guy from Al lol. The Busan live band were brought in by Asaf Rodeh who spearheaded Hobi's live set at Hobipalooza with Jung Wooyeong.
I've said before and I'll keep saying, k-pop's backbone is Black musical contribution, but I've seen no other group equitably engage with Black musicians the way BTS do.
