its baffling to me how people take susie's behavior towards noelle (being nice to her, failing to pick up on her advances, feeling awkward around her, mostly just trying to keep distance so as not to potentially turn away one of the few people to treat her decently) as "susie has a crush on noelle too! she just doesn't know it yet!" but then turn around and take her behavior towards ralsei (being flustered by him constantly, asking if he's going to put his hat back on, openly admitting to thinking he's made for hugs, wanting to spend more time with him, teasing him all the time) as "they're just friends! she isn't into him!"

like, are y'all even looking at the game?!

it seems more likely to me that susie thinks about noelle because she considers noelle a friend, and that she feels awkward around noelle because literally every interaction they have is made awkward by noelle constantly stammering and blushing and staring at her! its impossible not to feel awkward when the other person is always acting weird and you don't know why, and also there's pink and hearts everywhere!

jesus christ!

to be honest, it took me a little while to realize just how awkward noelle's behavior towards susie makes things and how that's probably why susie also acts awkward. and, not to brag, but i am REALLY smart. very media literate. no wonder other people haven't realized yet!

taking susie's behavior about noelle when she isn't around, it really doesn't seem like romantic interest. notices her strange behavior and immediately suspects noelle is going to ruin her friendship with kris by invading their special dark world stuff, gets pissed off noelle didnt give the chalk she had to alphys. thinks of how noelle would react to stuff in castle town (sad noelle had to forget their fun adventure,) thinks noelle would like gingerbread (christmas, makes sense,) recognising the way noelle smells (admittedly weird, but susie also eats ralsei's dummy and smells kris' hair, so).

like jeez it feels hypocritical.

Reading your last post, I was reminded of something... Do you have any opinions / ideas about Toby's stance on there being no plushies or similar official merch of "certain characters, particularly those from the Light World" (including Kris Susie and Noelle), while “other times, particularly with Dark World characters like Spamton, [he] consider[s] the game setting and think[s] 'the game is improved by selling this'”? Because most people seem to take it as being because the lightners are "more real" than the darkners. If it was just Kris Susie and Noelle I could see it being that those specific characters mean something special to him, but the way it's worded in his tumblr post about it that I've quoted here seems to make it mainly (though perhaps not entirely) a difference between lightners and darkners. Is it just because the game is still setting people up to not see the darkners as full people, with the intention of later pulling the rug out from under them, or do you think there's another angle?

this is a really hard question for me to answer. i am a touch uncomfortable with this being the primary conclusion drawn from toby's statement about deltarune merchandise, because "the darkners are not deserving of personhood" is not a statement that is ever validated within the game's story (nor should it be, given). i do think, as i said, that the lightners are considered "more real" in the power structure of deltarune's world -- the worldstate treats them as such as a means to oppress those below them and reify its hierarchy. they are treated as "more deserving of personhood" by the systems present within the game's world.

but this is very explicitly not a good or neutral state.

even setting aside the intertextuality with undertale's themes of personhood being owed to those who are denied it, deltarune's story gives us ample opportunity to understand that the darkners are people -- not only through the screenshots i included in the post about the addisons, but through ralsei's relationship to personhood and darknerhood, the chapter bosses' and secret bosses' and shopkeepers' relationships to personhood and darknerhood, and how they all mirror kris. it would not follow to say that kris deserves personhood, but the darkners do not. lines of code and dialogue, objects made to be used and discarded -- again, these are all people in this world, and deserve to be treated as such. i suppose my point here is to say that just because a story presents a certain worldstate, it is not automatically saying that that worldstate is good and right.

there are a lot of reasons why toby might not be comfortable making merchandise of the light world characters. they represent the oppression of the darkners, which toby may not be comfortable with. a lot of them are undertale characters, which toby may want to keep seperate from deltarune. it may be a case like with merchandise of chara;

or it may be for a completely different, personal reason that we do not know and will not learn. i really can't say.

theres so much emotion just oozing from pianpian.mp3. it sounds so distressed, panicked, and frustrated. it’s like a desperate apology — one for noelle AND for dess. i think kris believes they somehow had a role in whatever ended up happening to dess. that’s why noelle said “it felt like a concert just for me”: it was one.

noelle said kris would “suddenly get very still, like they were remembering something” and run to secretly play the piano. they even were playing to be what sounds like replication of gaster’s theme, who probably has a heavy relation to whatever happened to dess. kris feels so guilty about what happened. they couldn’t continue to spend time with noelle in good conscience knowing what happened to dess.

i think kris might even have memories with dess relating to music. they played the piano, while dess played the guitar. maybe that’s why they refuse to play the piano for the player: they assume we had some sort of involvement in what happened to dess and don’t want us to have the satisfaction of hearing what was a special thing they shared with her.

Oh, hello!

I'm happy to hear you like my Krerdly stuff :)

To answer your question, there's a lot going into it, I think.

First off is my love for Berdly.

I've met a lot of people who are similar to Berdly, so a lot of my work borrows from my experiences with them, or is outright directly based on those experiences. I also relate to Berdly myself, which should be obvious from the long essays I write about him.

Second off is that I appreciate how he's written, which ties into the first point. It's one thing to like a character in general, it's another to like BOTH the character and the writing for them. You can like a character who wasn't written well or to their full potential so long as you recognize that they could have been handled better (and this can allow you to make your own work addressing that!)

Ik we say it often in the utdr community (like every day) but Toby Fox is an amazing writer, and his talent shines through his characters in particular. Berdly is particularly outstanding in my opinion. It can never be said enough that Toby is incredibly talented and I just wanted to say that again here, I am infinitely jealous of everything he makes because I worry that I will never live up to it myself. (WRITING IS HARD)

What stands out to me the most about Berdly is not only his shocking amount of complexity, but also how he is written to be a lonely, not particularly likeable person who has a good heart nonetheless. He truly loves his friends. He's shown to be innocent, naiive, surprisingly kind, brave and headstrong, all alongside having a big ego and superiority complex. His personality isn't conventionally likeable or endearing, but if you take the time to know and understand him, you'll realize that by judging him and thinking of him as cruelly as many of the fans of the game did, you missed out on a truly wonderful character.

And this, I think is the point of why he's written the way he is. I swear Toby intends for you NOT to like Berdly, but this is because you don't understand him. That's why you're allowed to kill him. Toby's work has always been about themes like empathy and forgiveness and love so in writing a character in this way, he tests your empathy.

Berdly's a very real character. While many people like him in real life aren't as great as he is, we all have met or are going to meet someone like Berdly at some point in our lives. Hell, we might even BE the Berdly in our own lives ourselves.

He's a character that struck a strong chord with me on my first proper playthrough of the game. I felt a strong feeling of empathy for him and at the end of chapter 2, I was very mad at Toby for not letting me give him a hug.

Also he's fucking adorable and nobody talks about how cute he is! He's such a sweet, innocent little character... it would sure suck if anything bad ever happened to him...

OK I SHOULD SHUT UP ABOUT HIM NOW AND MOVE ON TO WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR ABOUT BECAUSE IF I KEEP GOING I WONT STOP LMAO

Obviously the most important thing to making Krerdly content is dynamic between Kris and Berdly, or how I read it per my reading of Berdly.

Kris and Berdly have a classic dynamic that is perfect shipping fuel: a rivalry. But theirs is special.

Throughout the game and side material, it is strongly implied that Kris might actually really enjoy Berdly's company, and Berdly says and does a lot of things throughout the game (such as lowering the library fee) that indicate that he may view Kris as a friend. How close are they however? He definitely doesn't dislike them, but has a weird view on them; it seems he worries they might be his superior and because he holds his good grades above them, brags about them constantly. He tries to push them (and Susie) away and focus on working with Noelle at school because he thinks their presence will drag him down and possibly damage his reputation as the smart kid and his grades, and it's possible buried under this is a fear that they might actually outclass him somehow.

The reading of Kris that benefits this ship the most is that Kris loves Berdly for who he really is, and not for who he pretends to be. That, paired with their mischievous, teasing personality makes them a great potential partner for Berdly, whose personality of caring too much about what others think provides such a contrast between them that makes them a truly, truly precious couple.

What I've always loved about the content for them is how sincere it is. This is a cringey gamer couple. They are happy together and they love and accept each other for who they are. It's not often you find things like that IRL and when you do, you know you're lucky, so giving that to Berdly, who I think deserves it, is just nice and makes me happy.

I also like to imagine that a relationship can help Berdly better understand what love really is and what he really wants from a relationship. There's a lot to explore with Kris and Berdly as a couple that I find really interesting.

Anyway I can go on about them all day. I'm not even sure I answered your question bc I started rambling but hopefully you got something out of this.

i was tagged by @snarky-wallflower and i love talking, lets go!

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

70 total, but 5 of those are chara's! so under my name its 65.

2. What’s your total word count?

1,427,738.....

cannot wait to break 2 million w the owl house daemon au. lets go!! never stop!!!

3. What fandoms do you write for?

whatever i'm into, but for fandoms i see myself continuing to write for in the near-ish future: deltarune and the owl house!

4. Top 5 fics by kudos

you're something special: my first kris-identity fic! i have mixed feelings on this one lol. you can tell its the first i wrote and i hadnt yet solidified my version of kris, tho i think this one probably fits better with canon. overall i like it though!

but then a bigger heart grew back: ooooooh i REALLY love this one. its postcanon owl house fic centering on hunter's grief over flapjack's death and his friendship with waffles!!! i wrote and posted it the DAY after the finale came out which is still really wild to me. its also the only fic ive seen that uses my favorite headcanon of 'hunter didnt carve waffles, she found him' which im so so fond of.

i hope your organs fail you (before i do): this was the first deltarune fic i wrote after chapter 2 came out!! the beginning of my deltarune spiral....its sort of a messy non-chronological look at deltarune's various routes and how kris might experiencing the game's multiple save files. also it has such a banger title. salt lake city by motherfolk is just banger after banger lyrics-wise

non-imaginary friends: god i hate that this is up here dkgjdfg i wrote it back when deltarune first came out and it SHOWS. i refuse to reread it but i think it's kris trying and failing to introduce the dark worlds to asriel. c'mon guys ive written so many better deltarune fics. blease. let this one rest in the past <3

we don't belong (but we're together): oooh, a warrior cats one! im....i mean, this one is like, fine, i guess. it follows hollyleaf and jayfeather in an au where the two of them flee through the tunnels. it has fun lore and i do like my oc pine but. man. its also the fic where i gave hollyleaf a power and if theres one thing i would change about my warriors au its that holly would NOT get a power. this is why i pre-write all my fics before posting now!

5. Do you respond to comments?

yes!! or at least i try my best to. i love and appreciate all my comments sometimes im just Bad at responding to them....i never know what to say beyond 'wow thank you' so sometimes i try to focus more on comments where i can actually say something of substance, yknow?

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

oh thats hard hmmmmmmm. i think i'd have to say it's and i want to tell you something-- which is a fic about kris & ralsei & the player/soul, where susie and noelle try to save kris from the soul, but both kris and ralsei know they cant survive without it. so in the end kris shatters the soul and is implied to die rather than keep being trapped.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

hmmmm. i think most of my ending are pretty bittersweet so in terms of pure happy ending...gonna go for a deep cut here and say its my naddpod fic +1 dad in which moonshine meets lucanus when shes a kid and they hit it off and they get to have that father-daughter relationship from the start. bc lucanus is the BEST naddpod npc and oh my god he loves his daughter so so much you guys--

8. Do you get hate on fics?

i have a few times but its never been like, super major. the funniest time is. i deleted the comment so i dont have the exact wording but im pretty sure someone called me a fandom-deserting cur for. not writing more warrior cat fanfiction?

like what were they expecting. truly.

9. Do you write smut?

no im very aroace lol. i barely write romance.

10. Do you write crossovers?

i used to!!! i did the adventure zone crossed with both how to train your dragon and pokemon mystery dungeon: explorers of sky. i was a different person back then. i dont think i'd do it now, but. who knows.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

not to my knowledge!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

no, but i HAVE had a fic pod-ficced which is still so amazing. like......woag. someone liked my fic enough to read the words out loud?????? huh????

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

not exactly co-written but both sometimes i think i left you just to see if i'd be missed and a buy one, get one free sort of friend were inspired by conversations i had with my friend @hyperfixations-go-brr! they would not have existed without those long discord chats. halloween festival will live on forever. synth my love.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

im not super into ships beyond like. basic 'oh thats fun' when reading but i WILL actually give the two im the most excited to write in my dess raises kris au someday:

noelle/susie/ralsei: YOU HAVE TO TRUST ME. like. this is an au where noelle basically replaces kris in the fun gang but not in the prophecy and dkjgdfg its about. this budding relationship. and ralsei clinging to the prophecy that doesnt want noelle here and susie who bucks against anything that acts like it knows what shes supposed to do and noelle struggling with the return of her sister and a world that wants to write her out of the story and all of them wanting to be there for their friends but ralsei is dealing with so so much and in the end she gets to throw off her chains and be free <3 noelle/susie/ralsei is so real in my heart.

dess/chara: literally the funniest queerplatonic relationship ever. theyre reluctant coparents. dess trusts chara with kris's life. chara would never ever let dess watch either frisk OR kris unsupervised. chara is 'i can fix you' to dess's 'im literally the most perfect wife in the world.' dess doesn't believe romantic love is a real thing people feel. chara puts xir kids above everything else. dess never asked to be a mother even though she literally kidnapped her best friends baby sibling. they get married for the tax benefits. they should absolutely get a divorce.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

oh god theres so many i would love to finish but its been so long i doubt i'll go back to them lol. the sequel to +1 dad that involves baby moonshine going to gladeholm. wall-e daemon au. gravity falls transcedence au daemon au. percy jackson daemon au. deltarune daemon au fangame.

as you can see its mostly various daemon aus. they were fun while they lasted! but ive moved on </3

16. What are your writing strengths?

pov you are me suddenly forgetting every single thing i have ever written.

i think im very good at writing otherkin or otherwise nonhuman characters. the comments that always bring me the most joy are those on my otherkin fics, by people who were able to see themselves in what i wrote--i think this is a thing that took me a lot of failed attempts to get just right and im really really proud of what i have.

im very good at writing daemon aus <3 there is sort of. an art to figuring out if one a work even needs daemons and two how daemons enhance or add to some aspect of the original work. theres a lot of things i like that i dont think really work with daemons but i always really enjoy figuring out how to add daemons and how to make my daemons like, characters in their own right, you know?

i like to think im good at dialogue and characterization! theres a few characters--kris and the collector, firefly to an extent--that im really proud of the voices i've made for them.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

fight scenes. fight scenes. oh my god i hate them so much they are SO HARD. stop making me put!! visual things!! in my text based medium!!!

really any scene that relies on having a strong idea of like, physical descriptions and sense of a place--i have aphantasia so having to describe scenery and landscape and just, anything really is always a struggle for me.

i also struggle with pacing, to an extent, especially across longer works (im looking at you, owl house daemon au)--knowing how long a plot arc needs to last and how to make it interesting still even when its going to be around for 600k+ words is a challenge and if the owl house daemon au was my first massive fic undertaking i dont think i'd be able to do it.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?

god im so bad at it but i really really am trying to be better--one big thing im going to focus on in my owl house daemon au edit is based on this because i want luz's identity to stick with her throughout the fic rather than it taking a backseat, but i am not a spanish speaker!! i know like, a LITTLE, but nowhere near enough to feel confident writing it.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

warrior cats. and beyond just 'oh its the first fandom i posted fic for' no i was writing warrior cat fanfiction from the START. i was out there on the playground coming up with warrior cat ocs. i was printing this stuff out in the school library. i would hand-write fanfiction about my childhood cats becoming warrior cats and starting their own clan. i would roleplay warrior cats on my bedroom floor with pictures of cats i cut out of printer paper and bits of plastic folders i folded into triangles and write down the stories i came up with.

i was the most warrior cat kid to warrior cat kid. I Have Always Been This Way.

20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?

ohhhhhh this is SUCH a tough question i have so many im so fond of, but i think i'm going to have to go with alterhuman. it's an animorphs fic about tobias post-canon and its an exploration of species identity and being a hawk and as a red-tailed hawk myself, a lot of it is deeply personal, a lot of it is my love letter to animorphs, and a lot of it is neffit, who is the best oc i have ever created, hands down.

as for tags, uh....anybody who wants to talk about their fics! even if we dont know each other!! go forth! ramble on about your own stuff for an hour!! truly so so fun.

Hello you-can-always-come-home,

For the past day or so you have been making your followers cringe with a hypothetical Deltarune MCU adaptation. In front of you is a computer currently displaying your tumblr account. You have 24 hours to write a cringeworthy mcu fandom-esc selfship fanfic with Berdly. Should you fail, your followers will instead fill this fandom ship niche with their own fanfic, almost certainly resulting in something far worse than whatever you could come up with. Will you succumb to the awful awful idea that you have unleashed, or will you finally get a taste of your own medicine? Live or die, the choice is yours.

christ alive. it's done. i really tried to write from the voice of a 13 year old mcu fan back in like 2014 and i really hope it doesn't come off as mocking anyone in particular. anyone who reads this i Promise you this writing style is put on and that i am a better writer than this actually

After the roaring knight turned out to be a personification of the fun gang's insecurities and was defeated by the power of friendship and also Triple Spamvil Neo 5000, the almighty fusion between Spamton and Jevil that had two laser cannon arms instead of one and flossed a lot, the heroes and all their friends decided to live together in Ralsei's castle in Castle town 2.0, a haven for all darkners and Lightners where everyone could live together and be happy since it was made of a different kind of darkness then all the others. Susie and Ralsei were now King and queen (Author's note: can be romantic or platonic depending on what you like best but all im gonna say is i LOVED the scene where he saved her from falling off a cliff and then said "I think you just fell for me" >_<) and Kris was Crown Prince(ss) (Author's note: haven't decided on a gender for Kris yet LOL). They were all roommates and everyone was happy.

Well, except for one person. Berdly, even though he was the reason the gang got out with their lives when he said "It's spammin' time" to summon Triple Spamvil 5000 (a.n: who else LOVED that morbius reference🤣), was still alone, his room in the castle was just a broom closet under the stairs and all he was ever fed was bread crumbs twice a day. Both Susie and Noelle had rejected him even though he was such a nice guy because they said he wasn't their type. Berdly's life in Castle Town 2.0 was TERRIBLE and he wished he had never helped them out at all.

Then one day he met someone who changed his life forever. She was half Darkner, half Lightner due to being born from one of the last Dark fountains to be sealed and her name was (Y/N). She first met Berdly when she was seeing King Ralsei and Queen Susie in the throne room to discuss her new job, the Lightner-Darkner ambassador.

Susie, Ralsei and (Y/N) were walking through the castle halls. "Well (Y/N)" said Ralsei, "I am very glad we got to meet you. It seems like you will be a perfect fit for the job of ambassador."

(Y/N) beamed. "Thank you your majesty. I will do my duty with pride. Being the only Lightner-Darkner hybrid in the world isn't easy, but I know it'll give me a special insight for this job."

Susie yawned loudly. "UGH," she complained, "Ralsei, didja HAVE to drag me along with you to talk to this priss? You know I hate di- di- diplodicus."

"Y-You mean diplomacy." Said Ralsei.

"Ugh, what-EVER," Susie groaned. "If I don't get to break something right now Im gonna explode" She turned suddenly and smashed an expensive vase sitting on a column. (Y/N) and Ralsei jumped back, (Y/N)'s kalidoscope orbs shining with fear.

"S-Susie!" sputtered Ralsei, terrified. "Y-You have to stop breaking vases! They're expensive!"

Susie roared with laughter. "Whatever toothpaste boy. Hey!" She looked around, snapping her fingers. "Where's Nerdly? He'll clean it up for me. Nerdy!"

Berdly came skittering quickly over from around the corner. "Y-Yes your ma-"

He stopped in his tracks, eyes landing on (Y/N). She was beautiful, there was no doubt about it. Her striped whitr-and-black hair humg around her shining skin like a halo, and she wore a gorgeous floor-length gown that glittered with every color of the rainbow.

Forget Noelle, this was the first real angel Berdly had ever seen. He suddenly realized hed been staring too long and cleared his throat blushing

"Uh... yes, your majesty?"

Susie motioned to the mess on the floor. "Clean that up. And don't take so long this time, I don't wanna see your ugly face stilll here in half an hour again."

Berdly looked miserably at the broken mess om the floor. "B-But your majesty, you said I could have a day off today-"

"Berdly" Ralsei said sternly. "Listen to your queen."

Berdly sighed sadly and dropped to the floor, and (Y/N) suddenly felt terrible for this boy who seemed like he just wanted to live a nice life in Castle Town.

"Excuse me," she touched his wing and he froze, blushing, "Don't worry about that. I'll clean it up."

She snapped her delicate fingers and in a second, the shards had disappeared. Leaving the floor clean again.

Berdly blinked in surprise. Susie's eyes narrowed. "Aw, c'mon, wheres the fun in that?! He always does the cleaning here! It's fun to watch him suffer!"

Ralsei tried to intervene, "Susie, please-"

"I don't care if you don't like him," (Y/N) challenged the dragon, stepping closer adversarially. "It's wrong to treat anyone this way. He obviously only wants to be friends with you and you're being very unfair."

Susie, not used to being told she's wrong, glared at (Y/N), smoke flowing out of her nostrils. "I'm Queen here!" she yelled. "I should be able to do what I want! Ugh, i'm gonna need some chalk for this" She stormed off, stomping down the hall. Good riddance, (Y/N) thought, though she was too polite to say it out loud.

Ralsei hurried after Susie meekly. "S-Susie, calm down-" Leaving (Y/N) and Berdly alone in the hall.

Berdly couldn't believe what had just happened. Someone had stood up for him! Someone cares how he feels! No one not even Noelle had ever tried to challenge the way he was treated ever since he moved to Castle Town 2.0 and now this gorgeous girl was leaning down and smiling at him.

"Are you alright?" She asked kindly, holding out her hand for him to take. "I'm sorry that happened. What's your name?"

"B-Berdly," he stammered taking her hand and quickly getting to his feet. "W-Who are you? I've never seen anyone like you before."

She blushed at that, and Berdly's heart skipped a beat. Her orbs turned bright pink, the color of happiness... and love?

"(Y/N)," she said quickly. "I'm the new darkner Lightner ambassador. Please to meet you Berdly!" Her face turned sad all of a sudden. "Do they... all treat you like that?"

Berdly's blue orbs turned dark with sadness as he looked down, muttering "Ever since I moved here. I helped them defeat the Roaring Knight too. And yet even my old friends seem to hate me now..."

"That's so sad!" (Y/N)'s eyes turned a deep blue to show her sorrow. "I'm sorry Berdly. You don't deserve this."

Berdly blushed again, shrugging. "Not much i can do"

Suddenly, (Y/N) reached out and took his hand, something that no one had done in a long time "Well I'm going to do something about it. Mark my words Berdly, no one'll treat you like a slave again as long as I'm here. Now, tell me about yourself."

As everyone continued to take their time in the Dark World to understand the situation better, Player sat down off to the side, trying to tie a few loose ends together. It had been a strange couple of days... at least, it had seemed like a couple of days. There was no telling what was going on in their home world, and no clear way to get back. What were they supposed to do? Trapped in a world they had never expected to be reality, and trying to help the ones that had been affected by the Player arriving... it felt like it wasn't right, but did they have a choice? However it wasn't long before someone else sat down nearby, with their own issues on their mind. At first, the Player had expected to see Kris. But instead, they discovered that it was Berdly- with a lot less of the usual attitude normally seen. Instead, it seemed more like he was reflecting on his own past.

"...Hey, Player. I know you're probably having your own self-reflection moment. But, as Susie pointed out, you're probably the only one who is able to understand the more... well, complicated aspects of what I tend to say. So, I guess that I feel like you might be able to understand what I've had to deal with in the past..."

The Player looked at him, surprised to hear this coming from Berdly of all possibilities. But, he seemed completely serious... so the Player nodded a bit. "...Okay. I'll try to listen." they said, looking to Berdly and awaiting the response.

Berdly chuckled half-heartedly. "...Thanks. I guess it's been a while since I had anyone who I felt any form of comfort for showing my... normal side around. And who might actually understand the situation as well. Because, if I'm being absolutely honest, I'd rather be more like Kris. Or Noelle. Or anyone else in my class, even..." "Back when I found that I was more intelligent than others in my age group, I was thrilled. I was able to learn and make use of the knowledge much faster and easier than others. And I enjoyed it- I wanted to learn more and I wanted to do the best I could with it, whatever that would be." The smile faded entirely from his face. If his face wasn't covered by the blue of his feathers, it would obviously be pale. "But as I showed that I had a talent for learning, others started to shun me instead of cheer. I'd never have the chance to answer, teachers would never help on the rare occasions when I needed it, and I was generally looked down upon." "And as time went on, it got worse. I was told that I needed to use my intelligence for something useful and was always pushed into learning specific topics- ones that I had learned long beforehand. I was forced into situations that I never had to be in, and that certainly were not ones anyone would want to end up in, simply because of being told that my intelligence would be useless otherwise." Berdly let out a sigh, continuing to recount the past. "I lost the drive to learn more. I knew everything I needed to, so why bother learning any more if I was supposedly never going to use it? It felt like I would just be pushed down if I tried to learn something that wasn't necessary, so I just worked with the box I had been put in and lived with it." The Player could do nothing but be silent. It was a very unusual situation- normally it was a kid who was already down being shoved further, but Berdly had clearly been one with immense potential- until the world had shoved him in a box and told him what he had to be, even though he could do so much more. Now, his half-hearted smile returned, and was clearly far from genuine. "...Once I did that though, everyone looked up to me as a role model. I was exactly what I had thought I'd be by learning everything I could, but instead of learning everything, I was only meant to learn what I needed and nothing more. I was special. But, if I had known what being special entailed, I would have happily stayed just like everyone else. Now I had to constantly show that I was 'special' so that people wouldn't get upset or call me out on it..." He looked towards Card Castle, where the rest of the group was. "Noelle was one of the few who actually treated me like a normal person. She never thought of me as more than anyone else- nor less. She treated me like an equal- something that I hadn't had for a long time. And again, I'd rather be equal at this point."

"As for Susie... well, honestly, it's a bit of an amusing situation there. She definitely didn't treat me the nicest- but, she didn't treat anyone very nicely anyways. She was equal-opportunist- which actually made me feel that same way. I felt like she just thought of me the same as any other person." He chuckled some, a small, more genuine smile showing now. "And now, seeing that she has a kinder side- even if she is, well, still Susie- it makes me wonder if I could at least show this bottled-up part of myself to them. Because it seems like Susie did just that- she opened up to you, and Kris, and Noelle. If she can do that, then surely I can do the same."

The Player sighed some, unsure how to respond. But Berdly spoke first, to their surprise. "...You know, it... felt good to get that out. It's been a lot to handle for so long. But, with that off my back, maybe I can do more with my life than fit in a box. Because, clearly there's more out there than just what other people think I need."

Berdly looked at the Player. "...Whether you processed any of that or not, thank you for at least letting me get that out. I should probably go and meet up with the others." he said, getting up and walking to the castle.

The Player blinked, then blinked again. They opened their mouth to speak, closed it, and then opened it again simply to say "...what?"

Berdly releasing emotional pressure- lots of it. Well, we have an alternative backstory for Berdly. Since Chapter 2 isn't canon in Paper Trail, I thought that maybe some of the lore from it could be adjusted for the story. In this case, he is actually intelligent, and was forced to act a certain way in order to 'fit in'. I think that this would have been another fitting way for Berdly's backstory to play out, but I'm not Toby Fox. So this is just my view of what could have happened. Also, this is technically only a partial... part. It's mostly one character speaking after all- so it's more of a lore chunk than it is an actual part of story. Thus this will technically be Part 16.5 since it's short and not very much is going on. Regardless, it is still a chunk of story and may or may not explain Berdly's 'crush' on Susie (I'm not shipping them, and likely never will, but I can say that they will have a dynamic that might be useful for story purposes down the road.), so I'm posting it regardless. When Lo comes over to babysit today, it might be a surprise that Toriel and Asgore aren't even anywhere to be seen. Usually at least Toriel is around in the kitchen or Asgore's out in the garden. Instead, she's greeted by Kris immediately telling her they need her help upstairs.

Turns out, when they open the door to the playroom, inside is a party. Yes, an honest to God party. There's a banner hanging up that says "Happy Birthday Lorelei" in impressive calligraphy that's almost certainly Chara's doing, and a cake that's clearly been decorated by Susie and Lancer but baked and frosted by Ralsei. There's a pile of presents on the table ... and even Flowey is wearing a little party hat. Probably against his will, but, he hasn't torn it off !

Practically as soon as Kris ushers Lo inside, everyone shouts, "SURPRISE!" and comes in for a big group hug. Dammit, they all love her so much!

When she gets around to opening the presents, there's something from everyone. Since Ralsei, Susie, Noelle, Berdly, and Lancer aren't quite as close to her as the Dreemurrs, they've all gone in on a $50 gift card to her favorite craft shop, and she gets a sentimental (or, in some cases, humorous) birthday card from each of them.

Chara's gift is a beautiful hand-knitted lavender scarf that's dotted with knitted white plumerias, along with a note that says, This took me ten hours to make, and you are worth every single one of them. I love you very much.

Frisk's gift is a cute hardcover journal, and they kind of had the idea that she could use it for her recipes, but it's really up to her how she uses it. Regardless, the cover is a swirling galaxy and night sky, and it says, Stars can't shine without darkness.

Asriel's gift is a basket with a bunch of self-care products, from lotion to face masks to lip balm to bath salts, wrapped up in crinkly purple paper. The card attached to it reads, in his childish handwriting, Treat yourself as nice as you treat us, okay?

Kris' gift is maybe a little more classy than one might expect from them ... unless you're looking closely at it, that is. It's a necklace and ring set, except they aren't really a 'set' unless you count both being made of sterling silver. The necklace is an elegant pendant in the design of a serotonin molecule, and the wring is an adjustable wrap-around that is engraved on the inside with the words, keep fucking going.

Toriel's gift is a new set of knitted oven mitts, and like Chara's gift they're obviously handmade, maybe showing a bit more mature technique. Like Chara's, they have decorations sewn onto them, knitted purple hearts. Asgore's gift is two boxes of Lo's favorite tea along with an adorable purple-and-white teacup that, for some indiscernible reason, is basically what she might look like as a teacup. It's accompanied by a note that reads, I look forward to joining you for a cup!

Even Flowey has something ! It's not as personalized as everyone else's, but surely she has use for a nice big sewing case, with her name plastered on it, that's full of shiny new needles and thread.

There's ... quite obviously a lot of love put into not only the gifts, but the party itself, even though the room is simply decorated. They all adore her so much, and while they try to show it as much as they can otherwise, her birthday is an excuse to be incredibly blatant about it.

If she expresses any kind of disbelief as to why everyone would do all this for her, when her birthday isn't really that special of a day, Kris will be the one to say what the rest of them are thinking :

"This is the day you came into the world, dummy. Of course it's special."

It's been a nice morning, to be sure - she had her dad's kalua pork at midnight, and a nice chat with her family over the phone before going into work today. She closed up early to have a break before school ended, and was now ready to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Dreemurrs' with the kids.

She was sure one of them might note the day, and had considered taking the kids out for cupcakes, but she had never expected this.

It... actually takes her a moment to process what's happening. Between the door opening and the shout of surprise she freezes, and is only broken when Chara (and it is always Chara, which is better than any gift) is the first to start the group hug. She sort of sinks into it, pulling everyone in even as tears (surprised, emotional, happy tears) spill down her cheeks.

How does she even start? How does one give all of these wonderful, thoughtful gifts the appreciation they deserve? She starts by wearing the jewelry from Kris and the scarf from Chara, as well as using some of Asriel's lotion. She can't wear a journal, but the first thing she puts in it is a picture of the group - she got one of those new Polaroids to treat herself earlier that week, and is glad she thought to bring it.

The rest aren't quite as immediately employable, but Toriel and Asgore still both get big hugs (as do Susie and Ralsei, but only if they’re comfortable), and Flowey gets to be carried around for the rest of the party.

It isn't until they all finally settle down that she finally gets a moment to catch her breath - and of course, it's sitting beside Kris, while everyone else is busy doing their own thing, be it cleaning up or helping with dinner. (This was the first time she'd ever been shooed out of the kitchen, because she's the birthday girl, and all the kids want to cook.)

"...You know," she says, "after our chat last night, I went home and started looking for a new therapist. I figured the best thing I could give myself for my birthday was another shot at trying to get healthy."

She takes a moment to take everything in - the mess, the leftover cake, the not-yet-thrown-away wrapping paper and decorations.

"...I think I'll call it a close second, instead."

The Deltarune Prophecy was Manipulated: Noelle was Originally a Hero of Prophecy

In the goner maker sequence, when naming ourselves, certain names produce weird reactions from the questioner:

This specific specific comment, of meeting someone very wonderful: occurs with 3 characters: Kris, Susie, and Noelle. Our 3 playable Lightners.

They seem to create quite the special trio.

Noelle is often remarked to be ‘strong�� by Darkners, being Queen’s ideal candidate for Knighthood. And her magical prowess can be placed to the test during the Weird Route.

Susie, despite initial apathy, is the most traditionally heroic of the team. She’s the team member constantly pushing forward and facing foes, but also the team member questioning the videogame logic the world seems to run on.

And despite Kris’s extreme stoicism, they are the most reliably heroic member of the team, playing a default honorable attitude throughout normal playthrough. They currently struggle with being made a puppet for an eldritch player, and play as Knight and vessel for this being, a conflict that will become more relevant as we seem to be the thing allowing this whole prophecy to occur.

Between the three of them, we have a reliable team of heroes ready to save the world! Or doom it, I’m not going to judge.

WAIT. Something’s not right...

The Deltarune Prophecy as Ralsei tells it gives 3 heroes who will ‘Banish the Angel’s Heaven: a human, a monster, and a prince from the dark. While Kris and Susie are recognizably the human and monster, Noelle is obviously absent. In her place stands the vague outline of Ralsei, who acts as the prophecy’s prince. In this formation, our 3 heroes are: Kris, Susie, and Ralsei.

Is this hero formation different from the one including Noelle?

Comparing the two, Ralsei and Noelle, it’s obvious they both fill the same ‘support mage’ niche. Weak attack, a lot of magic, and spells to spend that magic on. They both have Heal Prayer to heal, and a spell to pacify tired foes.

Starting out, both at LV1, Ralsei has a very bare-bones kit. His Pacify spell has a low cost of 16%, but it can only spare 1 enemy at a time.

Noelle has an incredibly more advanced kit, if a bit specialized, with greater default Magic, and replacing Pacify with SleepMist. While double the TP cost, SleepMist can spare all enemies at once, being able to end a battle in a single turn. There’s also the legendary IceShock, with all warnings that entail in using it. The only downside Noelle has is a pitiful Attack stat of 3. It can do an amazingly low 30 points of damage on enemies, half of Ralsei’s default.

While Ralsei is more well-rounded, when both are forced to compete for the same ‘Support Mage’ role, Noelle is the member with the superior toolkit. She has stronger base stats and a clear finisher when dealing with enemies with SleepMist. Ralsei has absolutely nothing Noelle can’t already do better.

Okay, he can attack foes normally and not make me cringe, but his attack is poor compared to Susie and even Kris. Back to the support mage he must be!

And anyways, Ralsei is still a good hero of prophecy. We can’t just judge people purely through gameplay - sometimes we judge them by the effect they have on people~

Except Ralsei barely has any effect outside Kris and Susie...

Ralsei is very often the most ignored member of the team- generalized as a Lightner by King, weirdness unquestioned by those who meet him, and forgotten by Queen. It’s to the point that after two whole adventures to bring down the corrupt rulers, most Darkners have completely forgotten about him. If there is supposed to be something special about his character letting him take charge of the prophecy, his prowess nor his charisma is it.

The only really valuable thing Ralsei seems to have going for him in regards to his hero status is his assortment of lore about the Dark World. There’s literally no one else available to wait in creepy castles sprouting prophecies, follow us around in needy attempts to be useful, or to give us vital info regarding the consequences of our actions at the last-second. All that information is really useful, thank-god it’s all wrapped up in one character... who has literally nothing better to do...

Almost like... He was literally just made to fulfill specific requirements to keep the game on track...

Like something happened after the vessel creation sequence that would force Gaster to create a railroading tutorial character...

I propose the following occurred:

There were originally supposed to be three heroes: Kris, Susie, and Noelle, who all have roughly equal amounts of importance in the Dark World and Light World. Their adventures would bring them closer in the Dark World, and create an unbreakable bond of friendship that could last in the Light World.

The second narrator in the introduction sequence interrupted Gaster and broke the ‘script’ for the events to come. The vessel we were supposed to inhabit was discarded, Kris was forced to become a vessel instead, AND: Noelle was removed as a hero candidate. She is no longer prophesized by fate to save the world.

INSTEAD, Ralsei was created, as a makeshift replacement for what she could do, with the added bonus that he can keep the heroes on the correct path. This is a last-minute fix by Gaster, and Ralsei didn’t exist before then. This is why Gaster doesn’t mention Ralsei in the naming sequence, despite a hero of prophecy being a very important character in the plot.

How successful this ‘fix’ might be remains to be seen...

Oh boy! I LOVE being asked to ramble about characters I like! (I mean, I do it without prompting too but being asked to makes it more special, heh.)

OK so! We all know Spamton has much more going on behind the scenes than he initially lets on. He’s one of the two characters who directly call Noelle “angel”, as I’ve shown on my other post…

The other one is the Addison from the shoe store, his former friend and coworker, which is also interesting! Not to mention that in the Weird / Snowgrave route, Noelle the one who ultimately kills Spamton.

But, unlike her, he’s not associated with an specific figure. Instead, he repeatedly makes use of words with religious meaning in his otherwise disconnected speech!

First of all, he mentions heaven quite a bit, at different points of the game:

It’s also mentioned he prays in moments of despair, at least one time to the NEO robot.

He speaks of communion a couple of times too:

Another reoccurring theme in his speech is “being big enough to look into heaven”: he mentions it twice, once in the pacifist / neutral NEO fight, and once in the Weird route fight.

And, of course, he calls himself god in the Weird route if you try entering his room.

If we’re willing to stretch this a bit further, one could even say the whole “making a deal” aspect of his character evokes the old story about selling your soul to the devil! Spamton’s backstory is that he was an unsuccessful but ambitious salesman who accepted help from a mysterious someone and that brought him fame and riches… until said person disappeared and apparently did something to him, turning him into the glitchy, desperate Spamton we meet. His insistence in striking a deal with Kris is evocative of that as well.

And that’s about it for religious subtext when it comes to Spamton… in the English version of Deltarune, that is! Because there’s even more of it in the Japanese version!

First of all, Spamton’s speech quirks are translated differently: not only he speaks in copy and pasted pieces of advertising, but he also speaks in a mess of hiragana characters, numbers, katakana characters and English words! Including two very interesting replacements:

In Japanese, the English word “death” is spelled desu and Spamton changed every instance of the word “desu” with death! He also changes every instance of “dai” which can be like, a standalone word with multiple meanings or part of another word) with the English word “die”! Spooky, isn’t it?

I haven’t been able to catch this one on a video, but I’ve read in a post on here by entryno17 that he also misspells “luxurious prizes” in a way that the characters can also read “hellfire”! "業火賞品" instead of “豪華賞品".

Another thing I couldn’t find a video of, but it’s a very interesting tidbit about the Japanese version: the dialogue in his shop where he mentions that he “used to be the e-mail guy, but now he’s the “It burns! Ow! Stop! Help me! It burns!” guy, that people usually take to mean he had an encounter with Queen’s acid pit, as a follow up of his “vacationing in burning acid” line. But in Japanese, this line is specifically translated so that he says his eyes burn, as in, looking at something too bright! I think it fits with the “trying to reach heaven and suffering the consequences” thing he has going on.

You know what makes me really sad? Not the possibility that Ralsei is evil, no. But the little hints through chapter 2 that Kris doesn't like him nearly as much as he likes them.

It's clear to almost every player that Ralsei's been acting suspicious, but hiding something or knowing too much aren't necessarily indicators of evilness. Even if he does turn out to be an anti-hero of sorts, I just can't see the affection he displays towards Susie, and specially Kris, as insincere. It's been stablished he really, really cares for his two first friends, and might even possibly crush on Kris.

But while we as a player can choose to reciprocate his care, Kris themself doesn't like the Ralsei tea as much as he likes the Noelle and specially the Susie tea. When you answer you want to take Ralsei to the festival, Susie remarks you sound very confused, while the same doesn't apply when you pick her. They seem to be fully neutral to him rather than friendly.

I know the whole point is that Kris is their own person and has their own feelings, but that doesn't stop me from feeling terrible for our poor goat boy, with how much dedication he shows to them.

Deltarune Theory: Ralsei is a guide for the script

It feels crazy that Deltarune Chapter 2 has only been out for like, what, two weeks? As of the time I’m writing this, and yet, there has already been so much secret hunting and speculation over this. Not even the full game, and people already go crazy over it. Naturally, I am part of this craze. In fact I was one of the people that played it as soon as it dropped.

And, I thought it was only me, but, at least for a little while, Ralsei’s behavior struck me as… odd. Not outwardly malicious, but just… odd. Particularly the first bit of the game, it was just so… happy and convenient? And Ralsei was at the center of it all, orchestrating it, making sure everything happened accordingly.

Eventually, that initial feeling of distrust went away, but… not quite. And it seems a lot of people began to feel the same way, pointing out bits about Ralsei that are just… out of place. Things that didn’t seem to stand out in the first chapter, are now popping out about him.

Questions include:

How does he know about what’s outside the Dark World, about the school?

How does he know about the game mechanics and call them out by names?

Why is he so interested in keeping the balance between only Kris acting and him and Susie doing magic?

Why does he seem so eager to dismiss what happened with Spamton NEO?

Why doesn’t he turn into stone or even get weak at any point during the time he spends in Cyber World?

Are the parts of his name and design connecting to the Dreemurr’s intentional, and if so, what does that mean for his relation to Kris?

How and why does he take player control away to look at what Susie is doing? Why must he wait until Kris is willing to do it? What does he tell them when he succeeds in this?

Now, I don’t intend to pose here “a supreme theory to rule them all”, I’m just a guy having fun and I’ve seen people voice particularly similar ideas to this one I’ve had, so I want to at least try to answer these questions through a relatively simple idea that would, almost entirely, immediately answer ALMOST all the doubts.

First, let’s start with some steps to build up this idea. For one, we know for a fact that Ralsei holds knowledge over game mechanics and may even break the fourth wall at times.

But we also know that Ralsei’s design resembles a lot of characters from Undertale we know and were fond of. For one, he can be likened to Toriel in the sense that he is the one to give you the first tutorial of the game and his clothes resemble her original outfit as well. Another connection, much more common, that people have made is that he is like Asriel, no doubt due to his name being an anagram, but also due to the fact he is also a cute young goat.

I would like to do a complete turn around here though, and say I do not think any of this points to Ralsei being related to Kris in the familial sense, for more than one reason, but my main one being that I don’t think Toby would be as frankly disgusting as to imply such a thing when there is so so much teasing in the direction of Ralsei possibly having a crush on Kris. I mean… really, Toby?

You know, I’m not too sure this would be the smartest idea, Mr. Fox, but alright.

However, I do think all these hints in his design and name have a purpose. And it has to do with how us, the fandom, see these two characters. For one, they are very beloved characters, and Toriel is one that we associate with her tutorials and guidance, whereas Asriel is one that people have yearned to see more in action. They are back, in a sense, but not present in our adventures so far.

What I’m getting at is that Ralsei is specifically designed to be the darling of the fandom. He is made to be loved, to be trusted, to cause feelings in us that make us want to protect him and accept his advice. This, in a way, also affects the in-universe characters who see him, as Susie put it: “as a big portable teddy bear”, whose job is “giving hugs”.

And I don’t just mean this in a character design way, like “oh wow Toby was so smart to make a perfectly marketable boy!” No. I think Ralsei exists as a meta element, his form being a direct manifestation of what we want to see.

He looks like that because he wants us to see him and lower our guard and expect his guidance. Remember how his form was shadowy and vague throughout all of chapter 1 until the very end of it and how he poofs into nothing but a pile of clothes in both chapters so far, no matter what form he’s in? What if he’s a shapeshifter? What if Ralsei isn’t even his real name? That certainly would explain why he says he doesn’t know what being Ralsei-like is like.

Ralsei? Ralsei? Oh God he’s gone.

Now, do I think he’s lowering our guard in the sense of leaving us vulnerable for an attack? Not exactly. I think it's so we learn to accept him…

Accept that he is a GUIDE for the game’s script. His entire existence hinges on guiding the main characters, specially Kris, throughout the story, and making sure the whole story, all seven chapters, play out exactly as planned.

You see, Ralsei isn’t evil. His goal is pretty simple, actually: guide us, the player, throughout the game, making us feel as safe and happy and secure. In that sense, of course he pushes so hard towards the pacifist route. After all, that’s the one that’s closer to a completionist route, as the sparing + recruiting mechanic adds more characters to your town, and therefore more content. He wants you to see all this content and get the most enjoyment out of it. His code urges him to bring you the best experience possible.

This would also answer why he does that thing with taking our control away from Kris and to watch Susie’s shenanigans. Because it’s satisfying to us. Notice how stressed out and pushy he gets in the alternate route when Susie comes out of Noelle’s room without being able to let us see what happened. He knows he messed up, something went wrong. He was supposed to let us see, so that we wouldn’t be bored, because God forbid the players be bored.

Just imagine this going through his head.

He also seems to genuinely care about Kris and Susie, and with good reason, as he knows these are the protagonists, and he is supposed to care for their well being too and ensure they reach their goal. I do think, however, there is a good amount of being genuine in his care, as he has no reason to react so boldly sometimes to either of them, showing outrage or affection in pretty telling ways. He isn’t heartless despite carrying out this job.

However it is also worth noting, for all his care, he cannot do the one thing that Kris would desire the most: free them from our grasp. And that is his ultimate failure towards them, and may end up creating conflict later on in the game.

From, here, there are two possible pathways:

Ralsei does not know about the dilemma Kris is going through, and believes Kris is entirely oblivious and passive towards being in a video game. He may even end up being the final boss to fight, as he desperately tries to keep everything on rails while Kris very much does not care for any of that.

Ralsei is entirely aware of what’s going on with Kris, after all, everything in a game’s design is planned, even the cutscenes, therefore even Kris’ struggles. Ralsei knows of the fate that lies ahead, that Kris will eventually be free, how it all ends. But to get there… is still a road ahead.

I think Ralsei’s affection towards Kris will definitely be explored in the later chapters. Not just because of the teasing we’ve been getting, but, if Ralsei really is a guide of the game’s code and script, what would that mean for him to get so attached towards the character the player is controlling?

Ralsei will have to make a choice. He will either recognize Kris is suffering and cannot wait any longer, or be faced with possibly having to fight them himself. This is why those two pathways matter as well. If he doesn’t know, his choice will come later and it will be an unpleasant surprise for him to find out the game universe is breaking apart around him with the self awareness of certain characters. If he does know, however, his choice is NOW, and waiting for the inevitable will be torture.

Just how long until he breaks? Or will he keep the facade until the very last chapter?

Like I said, I don’t intend this theory to be the biggest, most revealing and coherent theory. But… It could add a very interesting layer to Ralsei’s character, as well as answer many questions posed beforehand. He knows the school layout and game controls because he is part of the code. He can get to the other Dark World’s easily and remain unharmed because the game demands him to be. He looks like this so that we love him. He wants to give us the most fulfilling Castle Town so that we will love the game. He doesn’t protest even when Kris does things like try to give him the thorn ring, because to him, everything will be okay anyway. Everything he is, is for us. He isn’t evil or malicious per se, he just opposes Kris’ biggest need.

But he may have gotten himself attached. And that may be a clue to sparing him if he does become a final boss.
