Youthful Innocence by Xenedis Via Flickr: The hyena is an animal that has an undeserved bad reputation, and is seemingly considered the 'bad guy' of Africa. In reality, it is a highly intelligent and evolved species, which, like all other fauna, is simply trying to survive and thrive, and is critical to the ecosystem. There is a certain cuteness about hyena cubs such as this one. Even though the hyena is an apex predator, scavenger and enemy of the big cats, it is an interesting and valuable species which is great to observe and photograph.

Some photos from Kruger 🦁 🐘 🦒 🦌 🦓 🦛 🐆

This trip totally changed my view about wildlife - I had no idea what to expect, but it certainly wasn't that we would literally be at almost-touching distance to animals like elephants, giraffes, and zebras! We saw tons of different types of antelopes (impala, kudu, springbok, steenbok, etc.), and 4 of the big 5 - lion, elephant, buffalo, and leopard, missing the rhino.

Some highlights:

- Seeing a leopard with its kill in a tree! The carcass was perfectly balanced between the branches which was very impressive.

- Lions mating (see previous video).

- Herds of elephants crossing the road, sometimes within two feet to a car.

- Giraffes drinking water - the way they have to spread their front legs and bend over looks so funny and uncomfortable!

If we were to redo Kruger, we would've kept the bush walk, sunrise and sunset drives, and skipped the night drive. There aren't that many animals out at night and you essentially get the same experience at the sunrise/sunset drives since there are a couple of hours in the dark during those drives too. We stayed at three different camps - Talamati, Skukuza, and Crocodile Bridge, and that worked really well for us too driving-wise and distance-wise. All in all, this segment of the trip was due to great planning by Rob 🤓.
