Day 1: Statue Tour Kumamoto
There was a MASSIVE earthquake here in 2016, and as part of the restoration project Oda donated these OP bronze statues to generate tourism (+he gave $8 million). He grew up here.
Each statue has a little story to give narrative to why they are there. Robin is helping at the university bc she's smart, Sanji feeding ppl where the shelter was, Zoro encouraging kids at the local dojo etc. All places hit hard.
The statues are spread out far and wide across the prefecture, so its MEANT to be a challenge to see them all. To collect the souvenir statues is even harder (they do NOT advertise where to buy them, and some are in buildings far, far away from the actual statues!)
Sadly, the mini souvenier statues were almost completely sold out, but I was able to grab a Sanji, Jinbei, and Brook. It was the only true disappointment of the day. Our guide thinks the local gov doesn't really get the goldmine of foreign tourists they would have if they made it easier to plan a trip AND had more exclusive merch available. She is the ONLY PERSON doing these statue tours!
Anyway, here are pics of the first 8! Last two tomorrow
