Also!! For the writing meme (if you’d like!!) 11,16,32,39, and whichever you want to answer!!
[from this meme]
11 I have answered, but I'll do the others!
16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?
I actually haven't had a plotbunny for a new fanfiction in a while. I'm still plugging away trying to get my five current WIPs wrapped up (former heroes, the ageswap AU, the bodyswap AU, the robber bridegroom and other stories, and, yes, still, the sequel to Reincarnation Blues).
I have four original fiction WIPs that I haven't put into long-term cold storage (yet): Fearleading Squad, Le Morte d'Artificial Intelligence, Circus Luna, and the one I've just been calling prairie gods. It has an inspiration tag. I don't think I've shared anything about it. It's an experiment.
And I have also just recently been bitten hard by a new origfic idea, which is shaping up into an actual story with something resembling an outline and everything. At the moment, I'm calling it Girls, Ghosts, and Meathooks. You know, after Carol J. Clover's 'Men, Women, and Chainsaws'. I'm hilarious.
32. Name three of your favorite fanfic writers.
Neil Gaiman, Diane Duane, and Mercedes Lackey!
(Wait, was this not the assignment?)
39. Share a snippet from a WIP
Have one from tam lin's twin, the last piece in the robber bridegroom and other stories!
...
El calls the nowhere place where she and Will first met, the lightless void that doesn’t exist outside of both of their heads, the in between.
This place isn’t it. This is somewhere different. Something different.
Will’s starting to understand better, now. This place – it’s not, actually, a place, exactly. Sort of the same way the void, the in between, isn’t exactly a place. But he’s really here. Very much the way he wasn’t really there, when he visited his friends in the void.
He’s really here.
And this place doesn’t want him to be.
Something’s hunting him. It has been since he – arrived. Will still doesn’t entirely understand how he got here. All he remembers clearly is the panic. All he remembers clearly is the way the lights all flickered, the rising grate of the alarm.
And the screaming.
He doesn’t entirely understand why he’s being hunted, either. Or what he’s being hunted by. All he knows is that he is. And that he doesn’t want to know what happens if he gets caught.
So he’s been running. He’s been hiding.
So far, Will’s been lucky. So far, whatever’s been hunting him hasn’t been able to catch him. But there’s something else. The longer he’s here, alone and cold and tired and scared and starting to get hungry, the longer he’s trapped and helpless and relentlessly hunted, the more worn down he gets, the more Will can feel himself…slipping.
It wasn’t easy, exactly, the things El showed him about not getting lost, about not losing control. But it was something he’d gotten to be able to do without having to think about it. When he was relatively safe in the facility, anyway. When he knew what the dangers were and they came on a predictable schedule.
But here…nothing is predictable. Will doesn’t know anything about what to expect, or what the dangers are. Other than that everything’s dangerous. And his – whatever Martin did to him, whatever they did to his mind, his, his – powers –
It’s like when everything started, all over again. Like it was when everything was new. It’s taking all of Will’s concentration to keep it in check. And in a place that’s constantly trying to kill him, he doesn’t always have the concentration to spare.
He’s not sure what happened, exactly, when his friends tried to contact him. The same way he’s not sure exactly what happened to bring him here. It’s a blur. Will just remembers Mike saying that they’d told people. Told the police. He just remembers how it brought back the hazy, half-conscious memory of Martin and the state troopers, that last night he’d gone to sleep in his own bed and woken up for a moment or two while he was being bundled into the windowless back of a van. He just remembers the bone-deep panic.
Will doesn’t remember exactly what happened, when his friends tried to contact him. But he thinks – he thinks it was something bad.
He wants to go home.
But maybe. If this place isn’t the only reason Will can’t keep his – his powers under control. If getting out won’t fix them.
Maybe he can’t.

8th August: John and Isabella Knightley, the two eldest boys, Harriet Smith, and Robert Martin go to Astley's
Read the post and comment on WordPress
Read: N/A
Context
Mr. Knightley instructs Robert Martin to deliver some papers to John Knightley; John invites Robert to join their party that evening.
We know that this occurs two days before Robert Martin proposes again, “five weeks” after Harriet learned of Mr. Knightley’s engagement (vol 3, ch. 18 [54]; p. 313).
Astley’s Royal Amphitheatre was an early equestrian circus in London.
Readings and Interpretations
Adventures at Astley’s
We, along with Emma, learn about this event after the fact. Margaret Doody writes that despite Emma’s “London touches, no direct dramatic scene really takes place in Town. We remain fixed with Emma in Highbury, in Surrey” (p. 342).
Robert Martin’s invitation to join the John Knightley party at Astley’s seems a result of Mr. George Knightley’s intervention. Laurie Kaplan notes that, “[i]n a role that is quite new for him, Mr. Knightley becomes a match-maker: he asks Robert Martin to take some papers to John at his chambers in London; John and Isabella extend hospitality to Robert, who attends Astley’s with them, their two eldest boys, and Harriet” (p. 245). I am reminded of an earlier conversation between Emma and Knightley:
“If I had not promoted Mr. Weston’s visits here, and given many little encouragements, and smoothed many little matters, it might not have come to any thing after all. I think you must know Hartfield enough to comprehend that.”
“A straight-forward, open-hearted man, like Weston, and a rational, unaffected woman, like Miss Taylor, may be safely left to manage their own concerns. You are more likely to have done harm to yourself, than good to them, by interference.” (vol. 1, ch. 2; p. 6)
Though Mr. Knightley later admits to having sent the papers by way of Robert Martin in opening the story to Emma, his intent to interfere (by promoting an invitation, smoothing a little matter?) is slyly passed over. Are we to believe that he has entered into Emma’s philosophy—or that he does not believe Robert Martin and Harriet Smith to be “straight-forward” or “rational”—or merely that the situation, with a man once refused, is materially different than that of Mr. Weston and Miss Taylor?
Horsing Around
James Carson argues that, just as “horses play crucial roles in impeding the marriages of Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill and, thus, of Emma and Knightley,”
another parallel to the main marriage plot is facilitated by the equestrian and circus performances at Philip Astley’s. Robert Martin’s joining the party of John and Isabella Knightley, their two oldest boys, and Harriet Smith gives Martin the opportunity to renew his proposal and enables Harriet to accept him. Astley’s Amphitheatre was an entertainment that Austen herself was “glad” to visit in 1796 (Letters 5). Austen and the Knightley party might have witnessed there not only the physical agility of horses but also equine sagacity, since the attractions at Astley’s circus included the “mathematical calculations” and conjuring tricks of a learned horse (Benedict 207). According to Barbara Benedict, Astley’s “Little Military Learned Horse staged the expansion of expert horsemanship to the mental control of animal intelligence” (206). (p. 176)

J'y repense.

Tbr list that I will hopefully complete before the end of summer:
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus
The Orphan's Tales: In The Night Garden by Catherynne M. Valente
Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt
Maurice by E. M. Forster
The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa
Journey at the End of the Millennium by Abraham Yehoshua
The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty
and last but not least: Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin (the fourth book of the Earthsea Cycle - which I'm loving btw)
(In theory Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, Stardust by Neil Gaiman, and Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno by Italo Calvino are included in this list but let's be honest here, I will never manage to read those ones too before the end of August lmao)
Now, my favorite books from 2022 (at least so far):
Grendel by Josh Gardner (!!! i wasn't expecting it to be that great but omg. it really was. gorgeous prose + existential philosophy + tragic antivillain/antihero maneater monster as protagonist? i mean.)
Averno by Louise Glück

Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (ditto part 3)
The Hours by Micheal Cunningham
An Oresteia by Aeschylus, Sophokles, and Euripides (translated by Anne Carson) (and yes, that's where the famous "it's rotten work" "not to me. not if it's you" comes from lmao. also family drama and greek tragedies <3)
technically L'amica geniale/My Brilliant Friend saga by Elena Ferrante (my beloved!!) although that was a reread. but this time I appreciated it even more so I'm including it in the list

HA DEBUTTATO A TORINO IL CIRCO AFRICA (MARTINO-DELL'ACQUA): Foto e programma
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
- Il Sogno di Soery (Soery Dell’Acqua, Cerchio aereo) - Ripresa Comica (Patrick Milla) - Cavalli in libertà (Rony Royal) - Entrata Comica dei Pompieri (Ardisson Family) - Giocoleria in bouncing (Elio Martini Bizzarro) - Ripresa Comica della Bicicletta (Marco Martini Bizzarro) - Cinghie Aeree (Asia Curci) - Alta scuola (Genny Martino) - Entrata Comica Orchestra (Patrick Milla) - Coccodrilli (Walter Martini) - Animali esotici (Rony Royal: dromedari, zebra, lama, ippopotamo Rocky) Intervallo - Grandi felini (Elisabetta Bizzarro; tigre, leonessa, tigre bianca) - Verticalismo (Soery Royal) - Ripresa Comica Pop Corn (Patrick Milla e Marco Martini) - Volanti (Olimecha Family) - Coreografia Con Costume a Led (Jason) - Finale Come si evince dalla scaletta, numerosi i giovani artista in pista alcuni laureati all'Italian Circus Talent Festival di Roma.
Tumblr media

Tra i suoi più grandi successi, le sue versioni di "The Rhythm is Magic", Children", "Show Me Love"... e pure l'avventura collettiva "The Drop", assieme a Tiësto, Da Brozz e Djs From Mars, senz'altro tra i progetti in studio di maggiore successo.
