Because I love Scarlett in classic and period films, I chose Mary Boleyn as my muse for a new digital painting. I really had fun making this one, and I'm much more happy how it turned out!

HENRY CAREY, 1ST BARON HUNSDON
HENRY CAREY, 1ST BARON HUNSDON
1526-1596
Henry Carey was the son of Mary Boleyn and William Carey. Mary Boleyn was the older sister of Anne Boleyn (the second wife of King Henry VIII). Mary had been a mistress to King Henry VIII of England before he fell in love with her sister Anne. Mary married William in 1520 and the couple had two children. There were rumours that Henry Carey (and his sister Catherine) were fathered by King Henry VIII, due to their mother’s affair with him.
William Carey died in 1528 from the sweating sickness and Mary became a widow, Anne provided a pension for her. Anne and Henry VIII married in 1533 and their daughter Elizabeth was born.
Mary fell in love with the soldier and commoner, William Stafford and she married him in secret in 1535. When Anne found out about her sisters marriage she was furious and Mary was disowned by her family and banished from court. Mary struggled financially, and Anne finally caved in and helped her by sending her money. Anne was executed in 1536 for treason (Henry Carey was aged 10 when she was beheaded), and what happened to Mary at the end of her life is unknown, she died in 1543 in Essex.
In 1545, Carey married Anne Morganand and all up he had 16 children as well as children with his mistresses. When his cousin Elizabeth became Queen, he became Member of Parliament and was then knighted in 1559. His sister, Catherine became one of Queen’s favourite ladies-in-waiting. Carey owned Hunsdon House which had previously belonged to Queen Mary I of England. In 1564, Elizabeth I made him her personal bodyguard for four years and he later became Lord Chamberlain of the Household in 1585.
In 1587, Carey had an affair with Emilia Lanier the daughter of a court musician, he was 45-years older than her, during this time he paid her a pension. In 1529, Lanier, aged 23 gave birth to his child and Carey married Lanier off to her cousin (who was the Queen’s musician). Lanier gave birth to his son, who was also called Henry in 1593.
Carey died at Somerset House in 1596 and is buried at Westminster Abbey.

In Defense of Thomas Boleyn
On our TVs and in our beloved books we see Thomas Boleyn acting like a pimp, using his daughters to gain power within the court of Henry VIII, this fictional tale of Thomas has rather slandered his name, blackened it. So, what was Thomas Boleyns actual thoughts Anne and Mary’s relationship with the king?
Let’s get the first thing out of the way— his status at court. Thomas Boleyn had been climbing through the ranks since the court of Henry VII, and had no need to pimp out his daughters.
Thomas Boleyn, at Henry VIII coronation, was made Knight of the Bath and in the early years of Henry VIII reign was given various offices including keeper of the exchange at Calais and the foreign exchange in England, joint governor of Norwich Castle with Sir Henry Wyatt, Sheriff of Kent. Also in 1518 Thomas Boleyn was made a member of the privy Council, and in 1519 Thomas was made the English ambassador at the French court.
This was all before Mary or Anne Boleyn became involved with the king.
When Mary did start her affair with the king it is very likely that Thomas Boleyn cut loose with her, perhaps disowning her (which isn’t a good thing— but it does contrast the idea of Thomas planning the affair, and supporting it for his own gain).
When Mary Boleyn was widowed after her husband William Carey died from sweating sickness in June of 1528, King Henry VIII had to intervene and ask Thomas to provide for her financially. This suggests that Thomas was taking no care in her, and that they weren’t in an extremely close nor happy relationship during this time.
Distance Chapuys, the imperial ambassador at the court of Henry VIII, records in February of 1533 Thomas Boleyns opposition to the marriage plans between Anne, his daughter and the King.
“𝘐 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘥𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘵𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘶𝘱 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵; 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺, 𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘰, 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘶𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘬 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘮𝘦, 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘦,”

In May of 1533, Chapuys also recorded Anne’s resentment at the opposition of both her father and uncle:
“𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘶𝘬𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘦𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵, 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺, 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮. 𝘏𝘢𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘺, 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘧𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘻𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘨𝘰; 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 (𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘶𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘥) 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳.”
So, in likelihood, Thomas was against the marriage between his daughter Anne and the king, and with the evidence to suggest that Thomas tried to cut ties with his elder daughter Mary after her affair with the king in 1522 and initially didn’t help her when widowed, it can be said almost certainty that Thomas Boleyn didn’t use and manipulate his daughters to boost his own status, nor did he approve of his daughters sexual relations with the king. This is a great contrast to the power-hungry pimp we see on our TVs, and the popular belief of the character and morals of Thomas Boleyn.

The Other Boleyn Girl #maryboleyn #anneboleyn #sudeleycastle #catherineparr #winchcombe https://www.instagram.com/swallowdale_antiques/p/BviTizqnr90/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=g0tms4ohcar6

On this day, July 19, 1543, the last of the famous Boleyn siblings died. Mary Boleyn was either forty-one or forty-four years of age when she passed away, depending on which birth date you believe. Like her sister, Anne Boleyn, Mary had been highly educated and spent her youth in France as a maid of honor. There were rumors she had once been the mistress of King Francis, but none of those can be confirmed. When she returned to England in 1519, Mary was a short-lived mistress of Henry VIII. Though later it would be claimed that one of her children - or both of them - had been fathered by Henry VIII, there's no evidence of that, either, and his behavior toward the children would tend to indicate they weren't. Henry was very touchy about the perception of his virility, which is why he claimed his bastard son and paraded him around at every opportunity, and even after de-legitimizing his other children, he kept them in the public eye. When her affair with the king ended in 1520, Mary was wed to William Carey. She had two children with him before he died of the Sweat in 1528. Carey's death threw Mary into severe financial difficulty. Her sister, Anne, stepped in and used her influence with the king to get him to force Thomas Boleyn to support his daughter with a modest pension. After Anne became queen, Mary enraged the family by marrying a commoner, William Stafford, without the family's consent. She had kept the union secret until pregnancy made discovery an inevitability. It wasn't just that Mary had made the family appear ill-behaved with this marriage. Mary had potentially exposed the throne to danger by marrying an unknown. Rebellions and usurpation had occurred in the past when outsiders married into the royal family. Mary was expelled from court and had to struggle with financial issues again. Anne Boleyn quietly sent her sister some much-needed funds, but Mary had to struggle with the consequences of her choice. Sadly, it appears that Mary lost her child with William Stafford, or the baby died shortly after birth. All of her descendants today come from the children of her first marriage. She wrote an incredibly eloquent letter to Cromwell, pleading with him to try and soothe her family's anger. It distressed her that Anne and the king might be upset, but the people who were angriest at her were her father and brother. She didn't know how to repair the damage. Anne was executed in 1536, and so was George, the family's male heir. Thomas Boleyn lost his favor with the king and his position as Lord Privy Seal. The family's fall was brutal. At one point, it had seemed the Boleyns would be part of the royal dynasty, but only ten years later, they lay crushed and broken. Perhaps Thomas and Mary repaired their relationship to some extent - we cannot know. But things seemed grim. Mary's mother appears to have decamped. She moved to London, and when she died, she was buried with her Howard ancestors instead of the Boleyns at Hever. It can't be said for certain that this was a family breakdown - perhaps she had gone there for treatment of her medical problems or religious solace. When Thomas died in 1539, Mary inherited the Boleyn estate, which allowed her to fund her children Henry and Catherine’s careers at court. Her daughter Catherine served in the households of Anna von Kleefes and Elizabeth I, and made a fine marriage to Francis Knollys. Her son, Henry Carey, also prospered and was later a great favorite of Elizabeth I. In 1542, Mary inherited the property of her executed sister-in-law, Jane Parker. But legal wrangling over the property lasted until 1543, and she and her husband acquired Rochford Hall only a few days before Mary died in 1543. The cause of her death isn't recorded, but there's no evidence she had suffered any sort of lingering illness. It may have been sudden, and to the Tudors, inexplicable. The location of her grave is unknown. She may have been buried at St. Andrews at Rochford, but the church records do not go back that far and no trace survives of her tomb. It’s possible the tomb may have been destroyed in the Reformation, as so many were. Most of Mary’s property was inherited by her son, Henry, but she did leave some manors to William Stafford. Stafford remarried about a decade after her death and had to flee to Geneva because of his Protestant beliefs. He called himself "Lord Rochford" while he was there - a title to which he had no right. There are many descendants of Mary Boleyn today. One of them - though their identity is kept secret - sends flowers to the grave of Mary's sister, Anne Boleyn, every year on the anniversary of her execution.

THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL
2008 Film
The Other Boleyn Girl is a historic-fiction film directed by Justin Chadwick, adapted from the 2001 fiction novel by Philippa Gregory. The film is about Mary Boleyn’s love affair with King Henry VIII and her sister Anne Boleyn who became his wife. The film stars: Natalie Portman as Anne Boleyn, Scarlett Johansson as Mary Boleyn, Eric Bana as Henry VIII, Mark Rylance as Thomas Boleyn, David Morrissey as Thomas Howard, Benedict Cumberbatch as William Carey, Eddie Redmayne as William Safford and Alfie Allen as the King’s messenger.
It was filmed in Kent, England, but not at Hever Castle (the Boleyn home) and Dover Castle was used for the Tower of London and for the execution scenes.
The Other Boleyn book and film have been criticised due to the amount of inaccuracies within both. Philippa Gregory did manage to get the historic names correct but that is about it. Mary Boleyn was portrayed as an innocent virgin, which she wasn’t in real life. Anne was portrayed as the older sister, even though she was the youngest. Mary didn’t raise Princess Elizabeth (and Elizabeth was aged 2 when her mother was executed). Catherine of Aragon was portrayed with dark hair and olive skin, in real life she was European royalty with auburn hair and pale skin. To be fair most movies and TV programs do get Catherine of Aragon’s appearance wrong. The inaccuracies in this film are countless and you won’t be getting any historic education from this film.
Not the best film, a bit silly, but the casting is fantastic, and the costumes are beautiful. There are better Tudor movie/TV programs out there.

Wallis Simpson
Neerja Bhanot
Elizabeth Tudor

Lucrezia Borgia
Elizabeth of York
Meeting: Anne Boleyn (whoa, I honestly thought it’d skip right over this one)
Question: To ask permission to hug her probably. If I could do that without actually having to ask than I’d probably try to settle one major historical debate and ask whether she truly loved Henry.
(Go forth whoever wants to do it for themselves! Although @harritudur yours can’t be alternating of Henry VII to Elizabeth of York haha.)
