Igor and Svetlana Kopystiansky. Double Fiction. 2008. Installation view: Radvila Palace Museum of Art, exhibition Igor & Svetlana Kopystiansky. 2023-2024.
"Double Fiction"(2008) by Igor and Svetlana Kopystiansky based at "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock. …“Two revelatory pieces taken from the classical narrative cinema, Spellbound (2009) and Birds (2008), rework canonical Alfred Hitchcock films employing the same technique used in Pink and White. In this case, the moving image is not found footage but a finely crafted example of the classical cinema, created by a director employing elaborately staged action, cinematography, a script, acting, lighting, composition, and sound. In the case of Spellbound, a three-minute loop superimposes a sequence from the film played forward with the same scenes played in reverse. The two sequences come together in the middle and then continue on to either the conclusion or beginning of the sequence. Narrative anticipation and the intense drama of the action reaches its climax as a single scene. Time folds upon itself as we watch, but also as we recall what we already know. This method is elaborated further in The Birds, in which the entire Hitchcock film is shown with sound, from beginning to end and over again in reverse, from the end to the beginning. (The credits have been removed.) At the mid-point, the film becomes one as the superimposed films line up and become a single film. A work of astonishing simplicity and originality, it takes the meta-cinematic work of such artists as Douglas Gordon and Stan Douglas and the treatment of language in Gary Hill’s videotapes into the complex terrain of narrative, storytelling, and perception. The anticipation and remembrance of time and events through the conventions of storytelling, as we see in the Birds, also becomes a means to provide new insight into that film’s apocryphal vision of nature and human relationships. Early scenes are joined with later scenes, and it is almost as if the film itself is dreaming its own narrative as it unfolds. Birds is a brilliant choice, since it heightens the dramatic intensity of the narrative cinema and the nuance of the performances in a deconstruction of the meanings of the original film. It also places the viewer before the screen as an active participant. In a sense, the film haunts itself, as the action that unfolds anticipates its own conclusion, and the relationships between the characters become tragically predicted and realized. The destruction that is foreshadowed actually appears in the film at its beginning. Igor and Svetlana Kopystiansky have created a dialectical process by integrating the point of view of the camera and the play of time. The viewer becomes engaged in active looking and creates meaning out of moving images through that cognitive process. These artists have created an aesthetic text that is haunted by memory, whether represented by found footage, by the chance recordings of plastic bags blowing along on the sidewalk or the movement of people on the street, or by the rediscovery of scenes from well-known movies. Time erases itself as scenes overlap and change, in the process refashioning the moving image into an aesthetic text of timeless fascination.”

'A worsening situation': Primary health-care declines in New Brunswick says report
The New Brunswick Health Council, which is responsible for reporting publicly on the performance of the provincial health system, released a report Monday on the state of access to primary health care.
According to the council, primary care is on the decline, despite New Brunswick having more doctors per-capita than most provinces.
"I am happy to see that the New Brunswick Health Council is looking at primary care access, and also that primary care access to quality care is important,” said Dr. Michele Michaud, president of the New Brunswick Medical Society.
The province has a waiting list of 75,000 patients seeking primary health-care providers.
"In New Brunswick, we have among the highest numbers of doctors per-capita among the highest numbers of people who have a family doctor,” Robichaud said.
“Yet again [it's] a worsening situation when it comes to the ability for people to access their doctor in a timely way,” he said.
The report shows that in 2020, 50.8 per cent of citizens were able to get an appointment with their family doctor within five days, down from 55.6 per cent in 2011.
"It's not surprising, but I think we need to understand that even though we have one of the larger ratios of family docs to patients, the province of New Brunswick has a lot of physicians working elsewhere than in the office taking roster patients,” Michaud said.
“For instance, a lot of physicians are doing ER work which is especially true in rural regions where we don't have any specialized emergency doctors,” she said.
New Brunswickers are reported to be utilizing alternative care such as calling 811 tele-health and visiting walk-in clinics versus the emergency department.
"In a nutshell, the consensus is that we should be doing far better with the level of resources we have. So we should be moving away from family doctor-focused primary care,” said Stéphane Robichaud, CEO of the New Brunswick Health Council.
Instead, he says family doctors should be one part of a health-care team that would serve patients.
New Brunswick’s health minister could not be reached for comment Monday.
The Health Department sent a statement saying in part: “We know there’s more work to do on this front, and we’ll continue to encourage physicians and nurse practitioners to consider new and innovative ways to care for their patients in the days ahead.”

Influenza combined with other viruses create a dire situation in New Brunswick
As influenza, RSV and COVID-19 continue to sweep through the region, Tuesday is the first day in three weeks that Cathleen MacKenzie doesn’t have at least one child home sick from school.
“It seems like we have a brand new virus every 10 to14 days,” said MacKenzie. “So, some of the kids are getting over the previous virus, some are going into a new one.”
MacKenzie has five children in school, one of which also attends daycare and her spouse is also in school. In general, she says her family is pretty healthy, but these last two-and-a-half months have been something she’s never seen before.
“It’s the very, very first time,” she said. “I’ve always chuckled at parents who say their kids are sick this often, I’m not sure I believed them. So, maybe it’s karma, I don’t know, but we typically have a very strong immune system.”
Right now, MacKenzie says she can’t send her kids to school until they’ve been fever free for 24 hours and it’s directly impacting their grades. However, she doesn’t know what else to do as she doesn’t want to risk passing a virus onto someone else.
The Anglophone East School District released data on its student absences for the month of October. On average, kids in Kindergarten to Grade 8 missed 1.8 days of school and grades nine to 12 missed 2.3 days.
However, sickness and absenteeism isn’t just affecting the students.
“It’s really kind of been a hidden reality and it is not business as usual in our schools,” said the president of the New Brunswick Teachers Association, Connie Keating.
Keating says right now there has been an average of four unfilled absences a day, but some days, it can climb into the double digits. With no supply teachers available, she says guidance counsellors and principals are stepping up to fill the daily gaps.
“Currently our school leaders are doing the best they can, they’ve become more like crisis managers as opposed to educational leaders and we need to have actions in place across the board,” said Keating.
She adds that there are many layers to the current crisis, but studies done before the COVID-19 pandemic had pointed out that schools were already under resourced.
“We’ve identified a need for a provincial task force to identify immediate actions to address the current crisis in schools and so, we need to bring together our leaders in school districts, we need to be able to sit down with EECD, our department of education, and we need to problem solve this together,” said Keating.
For MacKenzie, concern around grades and absenteeism at school is growing and with sick season just getting underway, it’s worrisome to think about what’s to come.
“My spouse is high risk for influenza and COVID,” she said. “COVID is always a concern, but this year, influenza has actually been a concern for the first time.”
“With our immune system already being low and the fact that there’s already so many hospitalizations in the area, and we both know how the staffing issue is at the hospitals with extremely long wait times. So, if it does become serious with influenza season here, I’m not looking forward to what that would look like for us,” she added.
Meantime, the province of New Brunswick has released new influenza numbers this week from the end of November.
“Physicians around the province are concerned,” said Dr. Michele Michaud with the New Brunswick Society. “We’re seeing more ER visits, we are already crowded in the ERs, hospitalization rates are higher."
Since the beginning of the season, 975 influenza cases have been reported, 218 ended up in hospital and 14 people have already died from the flu this year.
“I think it’s more sad than surprising,” Michaud said, in reaction to the recent numbers. “I think we need to think of all of those families and wonder if we’re responsible in some ways and what we can do to avoid those things.”
Michaud says it's up to the public to help where they can with mask wearing, hand washing and staying home if they are unwell.
