I was stuck behind a Del Monte truck this morning that had “FRESH INSIDE” scrawled across the back in some marketing firm’s interpretation of hand-painted green lettering, and for a brief moment I felt like Rick Grimes if he had woken up in a canned fruit factory instead of an abandoned hospital.

Hah, sure! You'll find a lot of it answered in this previous ask!

Basically in Australia if you want a second year on your working holiday visa, you have to do work in some countryside postcodes. The laws have changed around it, but back then (2014?) it was basically a hellscape of modern slavery. There's a horror film about that sort of job actually! Very funny--may not watch lol

I went to a lady who lived in Grafton and who was certified batshit. It was very very bad. I worked without equipment, sometimes ankle deep in mud, in the rain, feeding horses in my bikini because that way I could hose myself down.

I had to carry and lift bags of feed, 25 or 50kg... And make feed at night, boiling it. The room we kept the feed in was a container, and from the moment the sun set, the walls would come alive. tapestry of dancing roaches.

That's me ^ and the feed 'shed'.

The horses, of course, were great and always good company...

(that's not me but a fellow slave).

The worst though was not the insects crawling in, the black widows by the dozen, the flying roaches in my face or me having to sic the dogs on nesting mice... It was the barking.

One of the bitches had pups and was underfed. The neighbour threatened to kill her if she didn't stop killing his chickens. So instead of feeding her better, they turned the cage like space I'm in on that first pic, into an improvised kennel for SEVEN dogs. The puppies? Kept alone across the yard.

That bitch barked all night, non stop. It drove me to madness. It drove me to dark, dark places. I considered killing her myself. It was so bad, I eventually wrote a short story where Obi-Wan Kenobi breaks on Kadavo due to sleep deprivation! Then it turned into my first finished long-ish fic fix it, I'm very proud of it lol

He's lifting rocks, pushing carts, choking on his daily portion of mouldy bread, staring into the middle distance. He keeps his thoughts far from the things and people he loves, afraid that handling such precious memories might sully them, taint them with the same revolting grime that mats his hair and cakes under his nails. He feels his soul unravelling. The once thick and vibrant weave of his personality a moth-eaten rag, fraying under his touch. The person he was... The calm, collected man, sometimes to a fault... Sometimes a little too cold and obedient... Where has he gone? Like a shade into darkness, swallowed by something greater than himself.

Anyway, in the middle of that madness I started writing a 'novel' that was very much a vampire romance in which it's not *quite* vampires akchually... But then it evolved into an idea I really cherish, and wish I had the writing chops to work on soon.

So yeah anyway, I was mega broke as in '100$ and nothing else', was not paid, forced to work daily, even wash the family's stuff every day and roll the towels like in a 5 star hotel. I had no car and no money to get a way out.

The crazy horse lady kicked me out with no warning though, and I was rescued by lovely (and deeply racist) people. Before making my way to another horse person, a guy this time, who gave me a camping stove and a mattress in the room at the end of his stables.

I mucked shit every day while listening to Benedict Cumberbatch's reading of Kafka's Metamorphosis. There's a joke somewhere in there.

This is an era of my life where I had no money and no internet banking, and had to ask the cashier to 'please try again' after taking a can out of the shoping, and another can, and another...

I also, tragically, read The Collector, by John Fowles. That book left me so physically distressed, I was sick to my fucking stomach. I picked up the Exorcist to try and wash my palate! But finally I searched for fellow writers online, feeling my sanity was slowly unraveling...

And I found a forum of fantasy and scifi writers who ran a small monthly short story competition! I wrote my first in one day, while mucking stables... Sat at my diner of frozen potatoes and slammed my first 1.5k words short story ever. It featured an immortal gunslinger in a post apocalyptic wasteland. Strong beginings.

I participated almost religiously to this, for years. By the time I entered fanfic-world, I had almost 7 years of this under my belt.

I'm definitely sure it rescued my sanity.

NOTE: No one should watch The Son of Monte Cristo (1940) unless there is literally nothing else to watch. Grand Duchess Zona starts as a clandestine revolutionary, falls in love with a vigilante and ends up being forced to marry two separate times to “save” the country. She’s not the first character to lose her agency to fulfill a gender role in a bad story and she won’t be the last, but she’s the character that got stuck in my head for 5 years. So these are 9 songs about power and women and the anger that lingers in every cheap happy ending.

(sidenote: being a “newsletter girl” gives me vivid visions of dirt-streaked cheeks and dirtied knickerbockers. “Please, sir” I say “they don’t feed me enough at the home. You just gotta by this here newsletter. That way I can earn a little extra and feed me and my baby siblings. Our folks died too young for them to remember. I’m the only one looking out for ‘em you see.” He’ll scoff in my face and as he passes I gingerly lift the gold chained watch out of his pocket. Sucker. That’ll teach him to laugh at kids. I’ll go over to my little street gang. We’ll wonder over the intricate designs in the watch. None of us have ever seen something that pretty before. Well, once Squirt got his hands on a lace handkerchief from a lady in the bloody red carriage but when Monte told him that someone probably sneezed in it before, it stopped being beautiful to him. He threw it away. Funny, ain’t it? How you can stop wanting things once they’re a little dirty. Like we ain’t all got a little grime on us. In a world like this, the only people who can stay clean are cowards and the dead. And who’d want to be either one of those?)

RETROSPECTIVE IV SKULL DISCO Appleblim Shackleton Derrière Skull Disco se cache Appleblim et Shackleton, deux amis de longue date qui comme beaucoup d’acteurs de la scène se retrouvaient dans la petite cave mal éclairée du Plastic People pour les soirées FWD>> organisées par le crew Ammunition. Pour cet épisode, retour à Bristol pour l’un des labels les plus singuliers du mouvement.

Musicien depuis de nombreuses années, c’est en 2003 que Shackleton commence à produire sur son ordinateur. Ce fan de Post-Punk mélange les atmosphères et les genres sans jamais se poser de contraintes et son premier titre Stalker en est la meilleure preuve : sortie en 2004 sur Mordant Music, le titre est à mi chemin entre Grime, Breakbeat, Dub et musique expérimentale. Quelques mois plus tard le titre est sélectionné par Rough Trade (gros label anglais connu notamment pour sa boutique de disques à Londres) dans leurs titres préférés de l’année et l’artiste se rend compte qu’il existe un public pour ce style de musique.

En 2005, au retour d’un concert organisé par Appleblim, les deux artistes finissent la soirée ensemble pour se partager les sons sur lesquels ils ont récemment travaillés. Motivés par le récent succès de Shackleton et leur envie d’apporter leur contribution au mouvement FWD>>, Skull Disco voit le jour avec un premier vinyle (12′)’.

D’un côté Shackleton finance le projet et de l’autre Appleblim qui sort tout juste d’études de technicien du son s’occupe de la promotion. S’en suivra rapidement des soirées du même nom organisées à Londres avec un succès relatif. La partie graphique est assurée par Zeke Clough, un ami d’enfance de Shackleton qui travaillait déjà avec lui quand il s’occupait d’un fanzine de punk de nombreuses années plus tôt. Il ne fait aucun doute que son coup de crayon si particulier a contribué au succès du label.

À partir de là, Skull Disco gagne progressivement en notoriété et les sorties s’enchainent. Jusqu’en 2008, 10 vinyles seront pressés et des artistes tels que GateKeeper, Peverelist, Ramadanman ou Geiom viendront apporter leur touche via des remixes ou des collaborations. Progressivement les titres se rapprocheront des 140 bpm tout simplement pour pouvoir être joués par leurs pairs mais ne perdront jamais le style si particulier de leurs premières années.

L’aventure s’arrête finalement pour raisons personnelles et divergences de point de vue entre les deux artistes. Ils en profiteront pour réunir tout les titres sur deux albums d’une qualité exceptionnelle et d’une cohérence rare pour une compilation.

À la suite de cela, Shackleton et Appleblim prendront des chemins différents et signeront sur de nombreux labels – Hotflush, Crosstown Rebels, Immerse Records, Berkane Sol et j’en passe – avant de monter le leur : Appleblim monte Apple Pips en 2008 et Shackleton monte Woe To The Septic Heart! En 2010.

D’une influence certaine pour des labels tels que Hemlock, Hessle audio ou Osiris Musik UK, Skull Disco aura su marquer le début du mouvement Dubstep avant même qu’on lui attribue un nom. Spring and summer, along with warmer weather are just around the corner. And you know what that means? Festival announcements, followed by festival season. Presented by Bell and Coors Light, OSHEAGA Music and Arts Festival‘s 17th edition will take place August 2, 2024 – August 4, 2024 in Montréal‘s gorgeous Parc Jean-Dreapeau. Over the course of 16 previous editions, OSHEAGA has become a global reference for great music and top-notch festival experiences: Attendees come to the Montréal and the festival to experience something that they simply can’t find anywhere else. Located on two islands, one which is man-made, just off the shore of Montréal Island and Vieux Montréal, Parc Jean-Drapeau was the site of the Expo 1967. The park has one of the most stunning views of Montréal’s skyline and Mont Royal, and while in the park, you’re able to catch a wide variety of artists, both emerging and established across an array of genres. Festival organizers and books have curated this year’s festival with the explicit mission of appealing to fans of every genre, style and generation. Beloved old-school punks Rancid, rising Los Angeles rockers The Linda Lindas, riot grrrl legends Sleater-Kinney and The Smashing Pumpkins are the day’s biggest names. The Smashing Pumpkins return to the OSHEAGA stage for the first time in 17 years. SZA, the biggest name in pop at the moment will be headlining the festival’s third and final day. And if you dig genre-bending pop anthems. T-Pain will be making his OSHEAGA debut. The festival’s bill features a wide variety of Afrobeats and Afropop including Grammy Award winner Tyla, who won the first ever Best African Music Performance Award for her global smash hit “Water;” Nigerian artist Ayra Starr; Haitian artist Michaeël Brun, who played a sold-out Festival International de Jazz Montréal show last year. What can we expect from Daryl Dixon?

**Beware, spoilers below** When Sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) woke up in a ravaged hospital, with the words "Don't Open Dead Inside" painted on a double door, no one could have predicted that his story would give life to eleven seasons of zombie fighting, survivalist mayhem. Based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead is one of the most-watched TV shows in history. At certain moments, it was bringing in 15-17 million viewers per episode. As Rick survives this nightmare, he meets a long list of incredible characters, from Glenn, Hershel, Michonne, Ezekiel, Abraham, to name just a few. However, one of the most important, and coolest personalities has to be Daryl Dixon played by Norman Reedus. Introduced in the first season, and not originally part of the comic book series, Daryl cross-bowed his way through an endless amount of zombies to become a fan favourite. After Rick Grimes disappeared in a later season, Daryl Dixon really did help to keep the show afloat. This was kind of in the same way that The Office survived with Dwight Schrute holding up the fort when Michael Scott left. With The Walking Dead now finished, and with it still having such a huge following, this brings us to a new spin-off simply titled Daryl Dixon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTOaFootkSk Daryl Dixon is the fifth spin-off to emerge from the world of The Walking Dead.  Originally, the show was set to also feature Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), someone that Daryl is very close to in The Walking Dead, however, logistical issues caused this not to happen. Set after the frantic ending at the Commonwealth in The Walking Dead (That also promises other spin-offs that you might have already seen...) Daryl Dixon shows us a new adventure for this crossbow-shooting badass, backed by actors Clémence Poésy and Adam Nagaitis. Set to premiere on September 10th, with six episodes, and already renewed for a second season, you can expect to see Daryl venture into Paris, which, like The Walking Dead: Dead City, is exciting, as it takes us very far away from the original location of The Walking Dead. In a lot of zombie movies/TV shows, I always tend to wonder what the rest of the world might be like. When he wakes up on a beach near Paris, Daryl isn't quite sure how he got there in the first place, but he is shortly tasked with the mission of looking after Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi). Set around the stunning location of Mont-Saint-Michel, he sets out on a savage, zombie-fighting quest to help this character out, whilst attempting to find answers to his own story. As I mentioned, Daryl is one of the coolest members of The Walking Dead, and it will be a blast to watch him cruise around Paris on his motorbike, taking out zombies, however, I really hope to see a solid story support that.
