Subtext and Culture, Young Royals, Season 3, Episode 6
Out here in the real world it's been a week since the cliffhanger ending of episode 5 where Simon broke up with Wilhelm, but in-universe it's just the next day, and Wilhelm is being comforted by Felice.
Tumblr media
Subtext: This entire episode is incredibly meta, there are so many times characters say things that reference earlier seasons or episodes, or the entire series as a whole. This is the first time, and Felice is saying what we're all thinking. IS IT REALLY OVER?!? 😱
Blink and you miss it: Felice gives Wilhelm her sunglasses and dries his tears so he can hide the fact that he's been crying. Also, look at that gorgeous Swedish summer. It is so pretty.
Culture: The third-years are painting the banners that go on the trucks on graduation day.
Culture: They're also signing each others' student hats, which is a common tradition. You can just sign your name or write something funny or do whatever.
Culture: This car is what we in Sweden call a sossecontainer. It's an old 90's Volvo, it's square, it's ugly, and it was pretty cheap and reliable, so it was very common and popular among working class and the lower middle classes. It was never a high-status car, so it perfectly illustrates the Eriksson family.
Subtext: Oh look, another throwback to season 1 when Sara argued with Simon about their dad, and said that he should stop giving people second chances.
Tumblr media
Culture: Oh look, another poem by Karin Boye. This time it's Eternity, a poem about cherishing your time with your loved one, and the text is about how good times feel like an endless summer, which is what it certainly looks like for the kids and their teacher in the lush landscape. But just like in the poem, their endless summer is about to end.
Culture: This is pretty much exactly the reason used when real-world Lundsberg was temporarily closed.
Culture: And Wilhelm isn't wrong, the shitty traditions are in the walls of the place, it's always been like that, and it's always been upheld by everyone involved with the school, parents, teachers, staff, and students.
Subtext: Since this is the last episode, let's prepare the viewers to say good bye to the show, and let's do it with a little montage of students crying and taking their stuff down and emptying their rooms.
Culture: This is a 100% factually true statement, Göteborg is the worst city in the world. Source: I'm a native Stockholmer, and you just have to trust me on this, ok? Look, it's just common sense, alright? Don't listen to people from Göteborg, they're just jealous they're not living in the glorious capital. Also, they talk funny. And they have no sense of humour! And everyone is named Glenn or something.
Culture: I don't think they're referencing an actual school here, and the current Norwegian royal children went to school in Norway, not Switzerland. But the current Danish crown prince went to some boarding school in Switzerland for a while, but then he went to the Danish elite boarding school Herlufsholm. However, it was rocked by a bullying scandal in 2022, so they had to pull him out of that one and deny all knowledge of the events. Feels familiar?
Culture: Solliden is the private summer palace of the real-world Swedish royal family located on Öland, an island off the south-east coast of Sweden. The show has consistently stayed away from every likeness with the real world, but I guess they couldn't be arsed making up a fictional summer palace for the YR royal family so they went with something familiar.
Subtext: Farima is talking about the problems of finding a new school for Wilhelm from an academic perspective, but he's just thinking about how this means he won't be close to Simon any longer.
Tumblr media
Culture: Vincent and the boys are pouring one out for Hillerska. It's a way to toast a dead friend, or in this case, a place.
Blink and you miss it: August places a king chess piece on the table before telling his friends that he's Wilhelm's reserve and might be king someday.
Subtext: And he's still so blinded by the glamour of it, despite everything. Thankfully, his friends can bring him down a couple of pegs.
Blink and you miss it: While Wilhelm is returning Kris, the book from last season, the second book in the pile is a book by Kjell Westö, Den Svavelgula Himlen - Yellow Sulphur Sky. It's about a working class kid in Finland becoming friends with his upper-class neighbour family, and his struggle maintaining a relationship with the girl of the family because of their class differences. Slightly on the nose there, show.
Meta: Henry interrupting our boys at the worst possible time is just a running joke at this point. How many times has it happened now? Four times? Five? Read the fucking room, Henry!
Subtext: Last chance to have a party together, but also last chance to see Simon, "maybe ever". Oh no, we have to start preparing for a sad ending!
Tumblr media
Culture: Red solo cups are not a thing anywhere outside the US really, but you can buy them as a gag gift in Sweden, because to us they're just a weird movie prop we've seen American movies. Every other party scene in the show has featured regular plastic cups.
Culture: Drinking with the teachers?!? Yeah, sure, why not, everyone is an adult.
Subtext: Emo outfit? ✅ Sitting on the floor? ✅ Full of self-pity? ✅ Exaggerating the catastrophic state of his world in the way only a 17yo disaster boy can do? ✅
Meta: Another throwback to how Wilhelm was referred to as the party prince back in season 1.
Blink and you miss it: Felice hides the wine bottle behind her back before Malin comes in. She knows, Felice. Malin knows everything.
Meta: Another throwback to when Wilhelm was eating the dirt at the very same football field that disaster emo boy Simon is now sitting at together with his friends, who are trying to convince him to go to the final party.
Tumblr media
Subtext: This time, August isn't just sorry that he got caught, he is genuinely sorry for everything he did to Wilhelm. He in turn forgives August, and we're all getting closure for this plot point.
Meta: Hey, hey, hey guys, do you remember that scene in season 1 episode 1 when Sara helped hold Felice's hair while she was throwing up? We're doing a throwback here!
Meta: Hey, hey, hey guys, do you remember that scene in season 1 episode 3 when Felice told Sara that maybe you don't have to speak the truth all the time? Well, Sara still doesn't understand why you would lie, but this time she's right, Felice was right to tell the truth.
Blink and you miss it: Stella and Fredrika are making out at the party, Felice saw it, and is making a very funny face. This is also why Stella rudely rejects Rosh, because of course she's gonna choose Fredrika, Rosh was just a distraction to make her jealous.
Subtext: Vincent is talking about Nils, who just came out, but August just saw Sara, and that's the whoever he wants.
Subtext: But despite saying that he doesn't care about anyone else seeing them, he still ducked behind a stack of pallets for this conversation.
Meta: This is a brutal Fleabag reference.
Cinematography: This scene is overwhelmingly lit in that sickly greenish fluorescent hue, but there's golden light coming from somewhere, so Sara and August share one final kiss in that golden light. But there's not enough of it to go around, not enough for their love to last, so August is left standing there alone, and all the golden light is gone.
Tumblr media
Cinematography: Wilhelm and Simon left the party sometime after midnight, this is supposed to be a very early morning summer sunrise, and our boys are just gonna be bathed in the golden light throughout the entire scene. Gods, it is pretty.
Meta: Hey, hey, remember that scene in season 1 when Simon was singing that song, and Wilhelm instantly fell for him?
Meta: Hey guys, remember that scene in season 1 when they were discussing welfare politics in class and Simon threw shade on Wilhelm? This is a throwback to that.
Cinematography: Just fucking look at this shit. What a nice view. The nature and the sunrise is pretty, too! Going naked into the water? Yeah, that's a rebirth metaphor as well. Lisa said so!
Subtext: This entire scene is basically Wilhelm trying one last time to get Simon back. They said they weren't gonna, but he's trying anyway. They're talking about that politics class where Wilhelm couldn't speak up because he was "not allowed". So he's still bound by his royal duties, which is why Simon broke up with him last episode.
Subtext: And since Wilhelm is still stuck, he's left on dry land, while Simon swims away from him, free. Guys, I'm thinking we're actually gonna get a sad ending! This does not look good! 😭
Tumblr media
Blink and you miss it: Stella and Fredrika are sleeping in the same bed and making out the morning after, and millions of #Stedrika shippers are rejoicing! Yay, fanservice!
Blink and you miss it: Walter is helping Henry up after he passed out in the grass outside after the party, and millions of #Walty shippers are rejoicing! Yay, fanservice!
Subtext: The last photo Wilhelm takes down from his wall is the one with him and Simon, because that's the most important memory of this place.
Blink and you miss it: Wilhelm shuts off his red lightstrip in his room. Those lights have typically been a symbol of his love for Simon, but he's turning it off. Sad ending confirmed.
Meta: Listen, it's a lovely little song that Simon wrote for Wilhelm, but it's 100% fanservice, it's referencing events in the show that Simon actually didn't witness, and it's even referencing the soundtrack to the show itself! I mean, come on! And we're getting yet another sad boy Wilhelm montage of him moping around Hillerska with his earbuds.
Subtext: Remember how the frog snowglobe was a gift from Erik, who in turn got it from their grandpa, the king? It's so obviously a symbol of the monarchy, but Wilhelm is dumping it in the trash. Are we... Are we not getting a sad ending?
Tumblr media
Cinematography: The shot of the flag being raised is cut off at half mast, which is a pretty universal symbol for mourning. Oh ok, we're back on track for a sad ending.
Subtext: This is the first time this season that Simon speaks Spanish with his mom, and the first time in the entire series that Sara does, which shows that they're fully themselves again, they've pulled themselves out of the Hillerska world.
Culture: The graduating students are having a champagne breakfast before the graduation ceremony, that's also very common in Sweden.
Subtext: Felice and the rest of the choir decided to have a little rebellion and not sing the boring old Hillerska song, and instead the new improved one that Simon made last season. No-one told him about the switch though, which is why he's so surprised.
Culture: After the ceremony, the graduating students will run out of the school to find their parents and family and friends, who are waiting for them, usually with a big sign with the most embarrassing baby picture they could find of them.
Blink and you miss it: August's mom and stepdad have also made a huge sign with an embarrassing picture of August Malte as a kid. Adorable.
Lost in translation: The queen is saying "lilla gubben", which literally means "little old man", a very common term of endearment in Swedish families. The show has been pretty consistent in that Wilhelm's family are all using normal words, just like any other family would. So it's pretty funny that despite everyone else using titles and styles all the time, to Wilhelm, his parents are simply "mamma" and "pappa", as if he was a regular kid.
Subtext: As a graduating student you get little gifts from your family, flowers, champagne, stuffed animals, all with a blue-and-yellow ribbon so you can hang them around your neck. August is family, so the Queen gives him one as well. Of a frog with a crown. Which is a symbol of the monarchy in the show. Wilhelm threw his frog in the trash, August is getting a frog from the Queen. I think there might be symbolism here! I think we're setting up August to become the next king! Do we dare hope for a happy ending?
Tumblr media
Cinematography: Just fucking look at this shit. The composition, the contrast, the height difference, the distance between them. It's so pretty. And they're talking about how good it was while it lasted, just like how a TV show with a sad ending can still be an amazing experience. Hint hint.
Subtext: We're saying our goodbyes, Wilhelm and Simon are saying goodbye to each other, Wilhelm wishes Simon a nice summer, just like how Simon wished Wilhelm a good Christmas back in season 1, and just like back then, they both understand that they love each other, but can't be together.
Cinematography: And then Simon exits the scene, again, leaving Wilhelm standing there alone, again, having seemingly chosen his family and royal duty.
Tumblr media
Culture: It's common to either rent a truck as a large group of students, or to be driven in a flashy car alone or with a friend. The two girls in the centre are sitting in a very nice Aston Martin, while a bunch of their classmates are on a truck. I can't make out the full text on the banner, but I think it says something like "Lock up your sons because tonight we become like animals".
Culture: Svensson is a very common Swedish last name, so to "be a Svensson" basically means that you're super average and mediocre, you're like everyone else. Whereas these elite kids are used to having everyone else bow and scrape for them, so that message is on brand.
Cinematography: We're in the car, it looks like the ending of season 1, and we're doing a close-up of Wilhelm's face. We're ready for the fourth-wall-break of him staring sadly into the camera, having been once again broken down by the system and not getting the boy. We've said goodbye to everyone, roll the credits, start your crying...
Cinematography: ...except the show isn't ending here. We're having an honest conversation between Wilhelm and his parents for the first time. Because every other time he's said that he doesn't want to be crown prince of the next king, he's been angry or upset, he's been threatening, and definitely impulsive. But he's never wanted any of it.
Cinematography: His parents let him go, they open the door to their van, Wilhelm exits, and the show turns up the volume of the soundtrack. "Energetic music" my ass, it's the Harmony theme! It's the main theme of the entire show playing as Wilhelm runs away.
Subtext: Oh, yeah, August sees him run away, and understands that he's next in line now. Sorry buddy, sucks to be you, but never mind that now. RUN, WILHELM, RUN!!! GET YOUR MAN!
Cinematography: The shows turns into the most perfect rom-com, with Wilhelm chasing down Simon's car through the incredibly lush and green Swedish summer. He catches up to them, tells Simon that he ditched the crown for his own sake, and asks if it's really over between them.
VAD FAN TROR DU?
As if the soundtrack wasn't triumphant enough, it now starts playing As Long As you Are Here as they throw themselves in each other's arms. Happy ending! They're crying, I'm crying, we're all crying! 😭
Tumblr media
Cinematography: A montage? With all the best scenes between our boys from the entire show? With the text of the soundtrack perfectly matching the montage? I should be outraged at how cheesy this is, but it is perfect. Perfect. I love it. I swear, this fucking show.
Tumblr media
Subtext: Finally we are at the true ending of the show. Wilhelm has managed to escape Hillerska, him and Simon and Sara and Felice have all escaped the hierarchies, the expectations, the duties, and the toxic environment of the school. He arrived in a Ferrari, and is now running away with his boyfriend and friends in a crappy Volvo station-wagon. The stiff suit jackets are gone, they're all in white, his hair is ruffled in the wind, and for the last time ever Wilhelm looks into the camera. And he smiles.
He is finally free.

Newlyn Fisher Clothing Set
I come to you today with this little historical seaside fashion interlude (before going back to work on more 1880′s sets). This set includes cable knit sweaters in high and low waisted, and variations on traditional fishermen smocks. More pics and download below
This set is partly inspired by the works of the school of Newlyn, a group of painters known to have depicted the surrounding of Newlyn, a Cornish coastal town, and its many fishermen in the 1880′s to 1900′s. And here is the painting that I referenced in the promo picture.
—————————  Cableknit Sweater  ————————

———————————————————————————
This is the sweater from the Werewolf pack without the little laced up strings on the shoulders (why do you always add these unnecessary details EA ? 😅). I’ve made a short version (S) for my high waisted needs and a long (L) version, for both masc and fem frames, as well as both adult and children.
Cableknit sweaters originated from Ireland, in the Aran Islands, though other types of knitted jumpers called gansey already existed in the British, Irish and Channel isles. They were created between the 1890′s and 1900′s. They were initially knitted with unwashed and undied wool. Both the natural lanolin from the virgin wool and the knitted patterns made for water resistant sweaters and as such : good alternatives to the previously used ganseys made of oiled wool died with indigo.
These Aran sweaters slowly became some fashionable sportswear item during the 20′s and 30′s, and later reached its peak popularity in the 50s’ and 60′s worn by the likes of Grace Kelly and Steve McQueen.

——————————— Vareuse V1 ——————————
Tumblr media
———————————————————————————
Vareuses are a style of fishermen smocks with a V neck. This style was typical of Brittany fishermen though I have seen depiction of Norwegian fishermen for example sporting this style of smocks on 1880s paintings too. While I couldn’t find substancial informations on their origins and date of appereance, vareuses seem to have been used at least as far as mid 19th century and were still worn as work wear up til the mid 20th.
It is said that traditionally fishers wore different colors depending on their fishing style : yellow ones for those shellfish picking, rust colored ones for those using fish traps, red ones for oyster farmers and blue ones for those fishing in the open seas.
Fishermen smocks were oiled to be water repellant and worn on top of clothes and knitted garments to protect them from water and keep them relatively clean.
On this 1st version of the vareuse I’ve not put any clothing “underneath” to allow for warm weather and for combinations with accessory shirts or turtlenecks.

Similarly to the vareuse, the crewneck is a style of fishermen smocks. This style is traditionally associated with Cornwall, in the north west of England. Cornish crewneck smocks were used similarly to vareuses.

“In Norway, we have a special graduation tradition, namely the russetiden. During this time we celebrate that we have finished 13 years of schooling. Russetiden is often associated with parties and absurdities - but it's also about unity, about celebrating together with friends and classmates.
Now we are approaching the end of a period of 13 years of highs and lows! There have been days when it has been difficult to get up in the morning, to go to school and stressful periods for exans, exams and exams. But it has also been days when we have found new friends, been inspired by a teacher or found clarity in something we have worked for too long.
In russetiden, it is important to remember those who have experienced exclusion, bullying or those who for various reasons did not manage to complete secondary school. That's why I hope that everyone remembers that it's not too late to meet new people.
We must not forget to celebrate, because we have come a long way! I hope you are as proud as I am of how much we have learned and developed since the first day of school in the first grade.
I hope everyone has an amazing russetiden, remember to take care each other.”

I was telling my norwegian friend of our finnish tradition of ✨vappu✨which he found fascinating so I thought I’d share! vappu (vappen in swedish, walpurgis night or may day in english) is one of our biggest celebrations, held on the 30th of april and first of may. you drink sima (a type of mead) and sparkling wine (or anything really), you wear your graduation cap, there’s big balloons, you go out in the park for a picnic, it’s a big parade. coincides with labour day in other countries, and while vappu is considered the celebration of students and working people, in finland everyone celebrates regardless of political views or background.
however! if you are a university student, vappu is a whole shebang!!! events and parties can last the whole of april or at least the week before the first of may (depends on where you go to school). there can be sitts, a type of party where you sing drinking songs, board game nights, games outside, theme parties, basically any kind of event. finally on april 30 we go to a park and party hard!
a distinct feature of vappu and basically finnish student culture in general is our student overalls, which you wear tied around your waist. the colour varies on your major, and we sell lots of different kind of patches you can sew into them. on april 30 and may 1 you also wear the high school graduation cap.
the events of april 30 include marching to a park with your subject organization/union, and putting a graduation cap on a statue in your city. for example in helsinki they put the cap on havis amanda. once the statue has the cap on, everyone puts theirs on and vappu has officially begun!
here is havis amanda wearing her cap. glada vappen!

The oldeat daughter of the Norwegian crown prince couple, Ingrid Alexandra went first to Jansløkka skole, the same school her older half-brother went to, but whn he graduated, her parents sent her to a private school for year 4-8 "to improve her English". It was in the news because it was a huge breach of tradition.
This school is Oslo Internationl school
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oslo_International_School?wprov=sfla1
which offers education from age 3-19 with an age division which is distinctly different than the Norwegian system.
She switched to a public school for the last two years of her lower secondary education, and attended Elvebakken vgs/upper secondary/high school, a school known for its focus on creativity. (Also the school Even in SKAM went to before he got sick.) She's currently serving a year in the armed forces.
The switch of schools before year 9 is interesting, because from the age of 15 kids can choose their own education. She's born in January so she may have told her parents that unless they let her switch schools at the start of the school year, she'd switch after christmas and it would look bad for them.
Her younger brother Sverre Magnus went to the same school as her the first three years, but when she switched to Oslo International school, he was moved to Oslo Montessoriskole. He stayed there for the rest of his primary and lower secondary education. He's currently attending Elvebakken vgs/upper secondary/high school, where he's studying IT tech and media.
Her father and her aunt attended a private high school in Oslo (KG/Kristelig Gymnasium, previously Oslo katedralskole, nicknamed Katta), but it's not a boarding school, and I doubt it has excessive school fees.
In the fictional world of Young Royals, all the children of the Norwegian crown prince couple went to a private upper secondary/high school, but a Norwegian division.
Interesting. Thank you. 💜

langblr intro!
Hello! My name is Atlas Sofie (pronounced Sofia). I'm 15 years old and from Denmark. I've decided to digitize my language journey, and hopefully use this as motivation.
About me
Conversational in Danish by 6, and in English by 10
Planning on either studying filmmaking or history in college
Disabled (in every way possible) and mentally ill
My name is based on a poem I wrote about how often a single sound is enough to convey a huge amount of information.
My Languages
German
Where I live it's required to learn this if you want to get a job.
Been learning it in school since 2nd grade.
Currently at A2, since most school lessons focus on grammar
Norwegian
Thinking of going to film school in Norway, so planning to learn it before I'm done with High School
Currently at beginner level, but understand it slightly since I know Danish
Swedish
Same as Norwegian
Would like to learn it because it's cool, and easy to learn
Irish
Learning for fun
Not taking it as seriously as the others, but it's still a cool language
Would like to make my history Ph.D thesis on Ancient Celtic Traditions, but due to an illness I can't do a trilled r
Would also like to do a semester in Northern Ireland in College
Think the grammar is fascinating
French
Also not taking this seriously
I'm choosing French as my elective language in High School, so I thought I'd get a head start.
No timeline on this as I don't actually need this
Just thought it'd be nice to know a romance language
Sønderjysk
This is a 'what-if' language
Sønderjysk is a dialect of Danish, with it's own unique grammar, syntax, pronunciation, and vocabulary
Learning this to connect with Sønderjysk family
Living in Sønderjylland, so easy access to resources for learning

For fanfic writer asks: 8 and 17 :D
8. What projects are you currently working on?
Ahhhh i LOVE getting to talk about my projects!!!!!!!! <3
Per Aspera Ad Astra: Also known as the kansas au, this has been my pride and joy over the past 4 1/2 years. The premise of the fic is essentially capturing the experience of growing up queer in rural america. I've posted 23 chapters but I have the entire fic outlined, it's just a matter of writing it. I'm probably about halfway to two-thirds way done with the fic. It's been a beast but like I said earlier, it really is my pride and joy
Thank Goodness (smutfic series): Currently only a oneshot but I plan to add one or two more installments in the series. What I intended to be a quick, slightly smutty character study on Glinda accidentally turned into 6k of messy, raw gelphie smut. Definitely my best interpretation of the canon gelphie dynamic, both in terms of emotional dynamics and how that carries over into the smut. I'm really proud of this fic, it's definitely getting a sequel and maybe even a part 3
untitled gelphie 'wedding' series: this one is still a true WIP. I was reading a few scholarly journals about queer themes in the stage version of Wicked and how it both adheres to and subverts typical midcentury theatre tropes. For example, so many 'traditional' musicals end in the marriage of the two leads, and 'For Good' can be seen as the fulfillment of that trope when viewed through a queer lens. I adored that analysis and it's inspired me to create a sort of miniseries exploring those themes a little more. it's a fun idea, and I have some outline framework going, we'll see if anything comes of it
17. What's something you've learned about while doing research for a fic?
Honestly, I haven't done a ton of research for Wicked fics due to the fictional nature of the world. Years and years ago I wrote a lot of Frozen fics so I had done a lot of extensive research on Norwegian/Scandinavian culture.
WAIT no duh, I've done SO MUCH research for Per Aspera Ad Astra!!!!!!!!!!! Including:
researching different high schools in Kansas (to come up with ideas for a mascot for the fictional Tri-City high school)
learning the state motto of Kansas (it's Ad Astra Per Aspera, which I stole and rearranged for my fic title, and I think I'm so clever for that)
also the state flower of Kansas is the sunflower and the state bird is the western meadowlark and the state mammal is the bison but those have yet to be relevant to the story
deep dives into the climate and weather patterns in Kansas (I have a tab saved on my phone's weather app for a city in Kansas in the approximate location I imagine the fictional town of Shiz to be. I check it regularly)
about three different drafts for the Road Trip in chapters 20 onwards. like extensive planning of how long to drive, where to stop, etc. etc.
research into radio stations in Western Colorado for That One Scene in ch. 20
extensive research into colleges in California, including which ones have good architecture programs since it's canon in this fic that Glinda is an architecture nerd

Meeting the Quidditch Players pt3 - The Wolf's Tail
Link to part 2
With the inaugural International School's Quidditch Cup taking place in the Marauder's Fifth year of The Wolf's Tail , 63 foreign teen Quidditch players and their coaches have descended on Hogwarts and, although every player won't be named in the fic (that's a lot to fit in) each player for every team has been created in my notes. Some of their names are a mixture of canon names and/ or names with mythological/ historical/ cultural or flight related links ... and as there won't be room to go into them in the fic, I thought I would post some of the extra details here. For the final post - the players of Durmstrang.
Durmstrang
Turul Terek (seeker) - A Turul is a mythological bird of prey, usually depicted as a falcon in Hungarian tradition where it is used to symbolise a protector spirit. It is a national symbol of Hungaria and one Hungarian royal dynasty was known as the "Turul dynasty". It is also a very rare boy's first name.
Danica Dobó (chaser) - Dobó is an old Hungarian aristocratic name which roughly means "one who throws".
Rabanus Klaue (chaser) - Rabanus is a German name which comes from the old high Germanic "hraben" and means "raven". His last name Klaue is also a variant of a German surname which translates as "claw" - so Rabanus Klaue is literally called "Ravenclaw".
Huginn and Muninn Lund (beaters) - The only actual Norwegians on a team from a school based in Norway. Huginn and Muninn are identical twins and are named after the Norse God Odin's pet ravens, who he used to send flying all over the world to bring information back to him.
Lev Zograf (keeper) - The canonical character on the team. In his commentary Mr. Scrabble declares that Zograf will play for Bulgaria one day, and he is right! Lev Zograf is the keeper in the 1994 Bulgarian world cup team (where he faces Hogwarts player Moran - listed in part one)
Mister Karkaroff (coach) - Another canonical character... But I think you all already know him.

11, 6, 2. for the ask game ?
2. do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad?
i have to preface that norway is an absolutely gorgeous country to visit and explore and i have had many a worthwhile road trips and hikes... but i do so love to travel. and my mom is the spiders georg of travelling ("no mother i cannot join you for this sudden trip to a greek island you found cheap tickets for i have sCHOOL"). for most of my life i've spent nearly every holiday going somewhere else, so staying in norway always feels like the 'boring' option.
(in the first years of the pandemic, the government advised people to take norway vacations instead of going abroad. i happened to work as a hotel receptionist. it was an... interesting experience. the hotel stood near empty for most of the year, and over the summer every hotel in town was full to bursting with what seemed to be all of norway passing through either to the north or to the south. i know summer seasons are always murder but due to all the extra pandemic measures it was even more stressful)
of course, since i'm currently stationed in sweden, it's nice to get to visit home...
6. most hated song in your native language?
ok this will be a very roundabout way to answer this question but bear with me. i do not listen to nearly enough norwegian music to single out specific songs i *hate*, BUT
so every may we have the Russ. the Russ are students graduating high school, majority aged 18-19 (18 being the legal drinking age). from may 1st to.may 17th (our constitution day) the russ dress in overalls corresponding to their area of study, pull pranks and party hard. there's a lot of russ specific traditions, such as painting lab coats (trondheim tradition), assigned nicknames, decking out a Russ Bus and blasting the Russ Tunes.
there are songs made specifically for the russ celebrations. as you may imagine, these are quite rowdy and rude and tend to be really misogynistic and rapey just. kind of awful in a lot of ways! so for this question i'm going to put the entire genre of russ music as my answer. i'm a certified hater of russ time ok.
(one of norway's recent eurovision contestants, TIX, is a writer of these. if a lot of norwegians seemed to dislike him, it was usually not for ableist reasons, but for his involvement in the russ song industry complex haha)
11. favourite native writer/poet?
this feels like a cop-out answer since i should by all accounts be familiar with the norwegian literature scene... but i'm not, so i will say André Bjerke. alltid er det på jorden et sted soloppgang

ROMAN LESTRANGE ✶ herman tommeraas, 23, cisman, he/him, pureblood, fourth year, business. member of slytherin quidditch team, competitive dueling and debate team. can be described as charismatic, arrogant, impulsive, and ruthless.
name: roman lestrange birthday: april 14th, 1999 age: 23 place of birth: london, england blood status: pureblood spoken languages: english, french, norwegian, russian and spanish father: rabastan lestrange, 52 years old, legislator. mother: astrid bjornstad, 50 years old, heiress to “eden’s” ( inn/pubs all throughout major cities in scandinavia and now the uk. frequented by “high society” members and known for their obscene prices ) siblings: twin sister, younger brother mbti: entp alignment: chaotic neutral astrology: aries sun, gemini moon, sagittarius rising character inspo: tony stonem, roman roy, daemon targaryen, max wolfe, kai parker
past:
born half an hour before his twin sister ( and three years before his younger brother ), roman is the eldest child of rabastan lestrange and astrid bjornstad.
astrid and rabastan married quite late; as the  spare to the heir ( rodolphus ), rabastan was used to not being in the  spotlight. he thought he would be spared when it came to the tradition of betrothals, but his came soon enough.
astrid came from an old, noble pureblooded family and was an excellent match, which both families would benefit from. rabastan had always been painfully loyal to his family, so of course he'd do as his father wished, even if it made him miserable.
roman, however, was quite  the opposite. selfish and spoiled, the boy would always put himself  first just as his mother had taught him. he was astrid's favourite, her golden boy and she made no efforts to hide it. to rabastan, roman feels like a stranger. in fact, all of his children do. this isn't the life he wanted. where astrid was overbearing and overly-involved, rabastan was distant and cold. he saw most of himself in his daughter - the spare to the heir, her twin brother.
roman’s childhood included countless nights spent reading and learning of history, magic, languages. he had a tutor for pretty much anything. he’d be brought to meetings with his dad’s ministry buddies, with his mum’s colleagues, with eden’s investors - after all, he’d be their boss one day, astrid would say. at social events and parties roman would be the one who had to say with the adults for the longest; he had to learn how to charm and lie and say the right thing. his mum’s friends all adored him.
personality:
rome has always had a knack for trouble. he does what he wants, whenever he wants with huge disregard to the consequences.
he’s a quick learner and can memorize stuff pretty well, which is why his grades are still good despite not putting in much effort.
not the most emotional person. his impulsivity stems from the fact that roman is easily bored and likes to entertain himself.
usually doesn’t  get too invested in his relationships, but there’s always an exception
not easily angered, but is especially cruel when it happens
has a deep fascination with dark arts, dark artefacts, anything forbidden. had an.. accident at his old school, but no one could prove it was him and besides, his parents had to get involved.
he's definitely that type of business major.
not to be trusted!! he's definitely got a few people he truly cares for, but very few are off-betrayal-limits.
wanted:
best friends: other purebloods, people from the same social circles as him, probably have known each other for quite some time. the only people rome wouldn’t throw under the bus; it’s a genuine friendship, even if he still can be a pain in the ass.
the betrayed: rome most likely needed something from them and did as he does; pretend to be friendly, get what he wants then stab the person in the back. maybe they hate his guts now or he’s gained their trust one again.
frenemies: they’re total opposites. this person can’t stand rome and he enjoys getting on their nerves. however, lately they’ve found that they.. have their moments. they don’t hate each other and although he wouldn’t admit it, rome has grown to like this person’s company.
past flings/exes: lots of possibilities here tbh. roman loves flirting, but hates committing. his longest relationship was probably a month.
bad influence: roman is kind of ruining this person’s life and encouraging them to make the worst decisions with him, whether it be something related to the partying, bad decisions, idgaf attitude or someone he’s introduced to the dark arts and they find themselves fascinated by them.
partner in crime: when rome proposes a terrible idea, this person is like: here’s how we can make it worse.
someone he tutors: absolutely terrible at it. was given as a sort of punishment to him. shows up late, if he shows up at all.
literally anything else, i’m always down for plots <3

Best Animated Short Film Nominees for the 95th Academy Awards (2023, listed in order of appearance in the shorts package)
This blog, since 2013, has been the site of my write-ups to the Oscar-nominated short film packages – a personal tradition for myself and for this blog. This omnibus write-up goes with my thanks to the Regency South Coast Village in Santa Ana, California for providing all three Oscar-nominated short film packages. Without further ado, here are the nominees for the Best Animated Short Film at this year’s Academy Awards. The write-ups for the Documentary Short and Live Action Short nominees are complete. Films predominantly in a language other than English (or in two cases here, with dialogue) are listed with their nation(s) of origin.
So completes this year’s omnibus write-ups for the Oscar-nominated short films.
An Ostrich Told Me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe It (2021)
In 1953, director Chuck Jones tortured Daffy Duck with the whims of an unseen animator (revealed to be Bugs Bunny) in Duck Amuck. Fast forward almost seventy years and a film of a similar concept comes in Lachlan Pendragon’s An Ostrich Told Me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe It. Pendragon, who directed, wrote, animated, and voiced the main character this film as an undergraduate student at the Griffith Film School in Brisbane (where he is now a PhD candidate), frames hapless toaster telemarketing salesman Neil as under fire from his boss (Michael Richard) due to a lack of sales. As the workday continues, he begins to notice peculiar aspects of his fellow coworkers and the office that make him question what is going on. Accidentally sleeping at work through the night, he encounters an ostrich (John Cavanagh) in the elevator who then claims the world Neil lives in is, “a lie”. What follows is a meta-breaking, existential short film deriving its comedy from the character’s realization of the stop-motion artifice of his life.
A winner of the Student Academy Award from last year and a nominee for Best Graduation Film at Annecy (the premier animation-only film festival), Ostrich uses what I am assuming is Pendragon’s hand in place of Bugs Bunny’s glove and paintbrush. Shot entirely during the COVID-19 lockdown at home in the living room, this is a one-man animation job. For most of its ten-minute runtime, the viewers see the film through an in-film camera monitor – allowing us into Pendragon’s workspace. Meanwhile, in the background that comprises the margins of the frame, we witness the rigging, wiring, and animation handiwork that is occurring at twenty-four frames per second.  The impressive character design and the clearly-delineated pop-off faces and jaws provide a remarkable assist to Ostrich’s comic timing and Neil’s acting (which Pendragon admits that Neil’s reactions take inspiration his own behavioral habits). The film’s metaphor is perhaps not as well developed, but one can make the argument that Ostrich is a blistering take on this stifling office environment and champions an exploration and investigation of all possibilities in one’s earthly life and in existence. One imagines we will see more from Pendragon, who is at the very beginning of his career and wishes to make a feature someday.
My rating: 8/10
The Flying Sailor (2022, Canada)
Making its debut last year at Annecy and from National Film Board of Canada (NFB; who, as a studio, are the second-most nominated ever in this category behind Walt Disney Animation), Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis’ The Flying Sailor is an experimental take of the story of Charlie Mayers. On December 6, 1917, a French cargo ship and a Norwegian merchant vessel collided in a strait called the Narrows, just off Halifax, Nova Scotia. A fire began on the former ship, which carried with it high explosives. The resulting explosion was the most violent peacetime accidental explosion ever on Earth – killing more than 1,700 and wounding around 9,000 in the immediate area and from the shockwaves. Mayers was actually onboard the deck of one of the ships, but Tilby and Forbis move him to the docks, watching on as an inquisitive spectator instead. As in real life, the blast is enough to quickly tear off all his clothes, and he spirals skyward. It is here that Tilby and Forbis send Mayers flying in slow-motion, almost balletically spinning as the film delves into his unconsciousness.
His life flashing before his eyes, we see hazy glimpses of the sailor’s memories – his childhood self at play, his mother, the rough-and-tumble life of being a sailor. Along with My Year of Dicks, The Flying Sailor is one of the first films in this category to make use of mixed media since Mémorable (2019, France). It opens with juxtaposing our hand-drawn sailor with the ships – as if in the style of the opening of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood – hurtling towards each other. But once the explosion occurs, the film, too, explodes with a clash of styles. Showcasing hand-drawn, computer-generated, and live action footage, Tilby and Forbis’ choices are reflective of the instant disorientation following the blast. The film’s penultimate moments are an orchestral cacophony from composer Luigi Allemano as the sailor returns to our earthly existence. This is perhaps the only film of these five that absolutely needed to be a short film. It presents its direction, completes its business, and concludes.
My rating: 8/10
Ice Merchants (2022, Portugal)
By earning Portugal its first-ever Academy Award nomination, João Gonzalez’s Ice Merchants – a production of the Cola Animation collective – already has a place in Oscars history. In his third film as a director following The Voyager (2017) and Nestor (2019), Gonzalez transports audiences to an impossible, dreamlike place and imbues his film with a metaphor of loss and how family routines can be an extension of grief. In a cliffside house suspended by hooks and ropes live a father and his son. Living thousands of feet above the town below, they jump off their porch daily, parachuting to safety in order to sell the ice. They return home after selling their wares and purchasing whatever they need in town by using a pulley system that probably takes ages to ascend and descend. In the rarified, chilly air, father and son go about their lives peacefully, continuing their lives amid the shadow of loss.
Garnering award wins at Cannes, the Chicago International Film Festival, and the Annies, Ice Merchants is among the most-awarded short films ever prior to an Oscar nomination. According to Gonzalez, the idea of the cliffside house came as he was dreaming or was about to fall asleep – a development that has, thus far, fully informed the visual conceits of his entire filmography. Prior to starting the formal animation for Ice Merchants, Gonzalez himself modeled the entire house (including the swing, interiors, and pulley system) 3D and started composing the score (Gonzalez is a pianist, but required his friend, conductor/orchestrator Nuno Lobo, to transpose for various instruments). Unusual in that the film’s narrative and themes spring from the score rather than the other way around, Ice Merchants adopts an everyday melancholy reflected in its strikingly limited color palette. Those colors include shades of red, orange, a dark blue or green for backgrounds only, and two brief but noteworthy instances of yellow. All these decisions – visually, musically, narratively – combine in a breathtaking conclusion that unleashes a wave of emotions. That mastery of cinematic control leads me to write something longtime readers know I do not say lightly. Ice Merchants is the best nominee in this category since Bear Story (2014, Chile) and World of Tomorrow (2015) were nominated together seven years ago. By extension, it is one of the finest animated short films of the young century.
My rating: 9/10
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse (2022)
Adapting Charlie Mackesy’s 2019 picture book of the same name, Peter Baynton and Mackesy’s The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse made an enormous splash when it aired on BBC One on Christmas Eve as part of the BBC’s annual slate of Christmas specials. It qualified for an Academy Award nomination by virtue of a nominal one-week theatrical release in Los Angeles County on September 23, 2022. Here, the Boy (Jude Coward Nicoll) has lost his way in a wintry forest when he encounters Mole (Tom Hollander). Mole is a cheerful, friendly sort that enjoys a good cake. But the Boy believes himself to be lost, is searching for a home, and wishes to be a kind person. Along their travels they encounter starving Fox (Idris Elba) and the lonely Horse (Gabriel Byrne). For the duration of this movie, the Boy and his animal friends speak to each other in platitudes of positivity, reassurance, and perseverance for what is most likely chronic depression or seasonal affective disorder.
The Boy might just be the most beautifully drawn of this year’s nominees. Its painterly watercolor backgrounds seem as lifted from a picture book; the residual sketches on each of the characters are a beautiful expressionistic touch (I especially like the ends of the Boy’s hair and Fox’s tale, as well as the curvatures to denote Horse’s leg musculature). My sense of visual wonder lasted all but five or so minutes. Because once the Boy has a few conversations with Mole, the film’s thirty-seven minutes seem all the more interminable. The film’s dialogue – and my goodness, no one speaks like this in real life – is trite, straight from the crowd that might have a “live, laugh, love” embroidery unironically hanging on their wall. Each character appears as if they are trying to one-up the other in their AI-generated speech*, as if each Very Important Line of Dialogue is attempting to be the penultimate or final line in a children’s picture book. I understand how this might be impactful for those with major cases of depression and seasonal affective disorder, but the film’s messaging and horrific script is sheer overkill.
My rating: 6/10
My Year of Dicks (2022)
A winner at Annecy, Chicago International Film Festival, and SXSW, Sara Gunnarsdóttir’s My Year of Dicks adapts Pamela Ribon’s comedic memoir Notes to Boys: And Other Things I Shouldn’t Share in Public (Ribon is the sole screenwriter on this film). This is not about people named Richard. It is 1991 in Houston. In the first of five chapters, we find Pam (Brie Tilton) – a fifteen-year-old who wants desperately to lose her virginity sometimes this year – narrating a diary entry/letter to her first boy, David (Sterling Temple Howard, “Skater Dude” from 2020’s Two Distant Strangers). David is a skater boy who has filed his nails into sharp points and his teeth in a similar way. As one can imagine, this romance does not work out and Pam cycles through the next four chapters awash in heterosexual hijinks (some readers will interpret the use of “heterosexual” here as a pejorative, but I say it as only an observation) with Wally (Mical Trejo), Robert (Sean Stack), best friend Sam (Jackson Kelly), and Joey (Chris Elsenbroek).
Alternatively hilarious and excruciating (see: the scene where Pam’s father gives her The Talk) to watch, one-half of the film’s genius lies in Ribon’s adapted screenplay of her memoir. Ribon (a co-screenwriter on 2016’s Moana and 2018’s Ralph Breaks the Internet), who saved all of the letters she wrote to all her crushes when she was a teenager, adapts that writing to form an honest, secondhand embarrassing story. The central ideas play like a grown-up Helga Pataki from Hey Arnold!, sans used gum bust of her beloved. My Year of Dicks’ resolution is genuine, as is a non-judgmental depiction of teenage female sexuality‡. In a roundabout way, it is a deconstruction of the idea that the only way for girls to achieve full womanhood is through sex and sexual appeal. And like The Flying Sailor, My Year of Dicks employs a litany of styles of mixed media that help it succeed. Though its rough rotoscoping (a time-tested technique in which animators trace over live-action footage) is the dominant style, there are some fascinating breaks here: most interestingly, a scene involving a metaphoric angel and devil over Pam’s shoulders and interludes of shôjo anime (which probably was not on the radar of Houston teenagers in 1991). A sidesplittingly funny film, My Year of Dicks nevertheless retains a sliver of nostalgic poignancy to keep it grounded.
My rating: 8/10
^ Based on my personal imdb rating. My interpretation of that ratings system can be found in the “Ratings system” page on my blog (as of July 1, 2020, tumblr is not permitting certain posts with links to appear on tag pages, so I cannot provide the URL).
From previous years: 85th Academy Awards (2013), 87th (2015), 88th (2016), 89th (2017), 90th (2018), 91st (2019), 92nd (2020), 93rd (2021), and 94th (2022).
* This begs a question. Should programmers of AI chatbots receive credit for their work when, inevitably, we have a film written by one?
‡ This line of thinking was certainly more prominent in the 1980s-2000s than it has been over the last decade, as teenage sex in the U.S. is down considerably from those times (the reasons are many).

zero pressure to explain this to my american ass if you dont have the energy, but like.
whats sweden like, as someone who lives there? im always fascinated to hear about other parts of the world from the people who know them best, and i dont hear much about sweden in general, so ive got a lot to learn.
if thats too broad of a question, some suggestions: how do you feel about the weather, or the politics, or the holidays?
whats a nuisance yall joke about (like, over here in usamerica, its usually the military-industrial complex, or costly healthcare)?
or, whats something unique about sweden, or something that you think more people should know about it?
well we can do this in order of things that pop in my head, very disorganized.
to start of with weather: its getting too hot. the weather is actually pretty comfortable most of the time, and these last summers have been the best ive managed in my experience with heat, but you can tell by the climate that its too hot. its too dry, and theres very little snow during winter. its still cold as fuck, but no snow somehow. I wish it rained more. but on a day to day basis, weathers comfy. A bit windy sometime.
holidays i got very little thoughts on myself. theres a few of them and most are just days off. Im not too fond of the way we celebrate them but then again ive only been allowed to and wanted to drink for 2 years worth of them, so i havent gotten into it yet (yea alcohol is the biggest reason we actually still celebrate things i think)
politics is a fucking hellscape rn. the barely disguised neo-nazi party recently got the most amount of votes in the election so the right wing parties is in control. Theyve already started talking dumb shit about climate politics and immigrants. Not looking up. Beyond that i dont know much about the political landscape.
I dont know what a typical swede complains or jokes about because i dont hang out with a lot of them. I know gas prices is a common thing right now. We also have a trend in comedy calling norwegians idiots, which doesnt make sense because we hate denmark way more.
Its hard to say whats unique or special bout sweden because to be all of it is normal. Only real things you need to know is 1. if a swede tries to claim they cant speak english with you, only plausible conlusion is that they didnt finish middleschool (passing grade in english is mandatory), 2. anything that is a traditional swedish meal is pretty much garbage. Its mostly mildly spiced meat, potatoes, and some sauce similar to gravy.
I guess one thing thats a big difference from the american perspective is how our education looks through the years. First 9 are mandatory, ages 7-15 grade 1-9, in stages called Low, Middle, and High stage. After that, you legally have the choice to keep studying or to do something else (socially and economically you dont have that chocie), and at that point you choose your own education. The most common ones being things like Civics, Naturesciences, Technology, and Fine Arts (Art, Dance, Photo, Music, and theatre). Theres a bunch more but these the top picks. Usually lasts 3 years which after you should be around 18 years old and most of the time expected to apply for uni. And during that time you do get money for going to school (seperate from loans, and not a lot of money).
I can probably provide some more detailed information about what its like here with questions about specific parts, but keep in mind that i also know very little about this country. I just live here

Gratulerer med dagen! 🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴
For de som ferier 17. Mai i dag og alle andre ❤️
For those who celebrate 17th of May, and everyone else ❤️
Tumblr media
(thats the king and prince of norway)
Today Norway celebrates it's national day/ constitution day. For those who doesn't know, today in 1814, the Constitution of Norway got signed. In there, it declared that Norways was independent from other countries. We had been in union with Denmark and wanted to be independent from Sweden, which would last until 1905.
In 1864, the first norwegian parade was held in the capitol, but only for boys. It wasn't until 1899 that girl were allowed in the parade. During the WWII, every parade and using the colours of the flag was banned. The 8th of May, we were liberated and the flag became a strong symbol for us. But this day is not a holiday, but it helped celebration on 17th may nine days after.
It's also to note that Norway have children parade. This is like 'the day that belongs to the children'. Each school gather up in cities and parade around the town, waving flags. Parents, family and other people gather up to watch the parades. Afterwards, there's often a lot of candy stands in the cities where people can by candy floss and ice cream. The elementary schools often sell cakes and have games for the children.
In Oslo, the capital, you will see military soldiers in the parade. Cities often have parades for the 'citizens' too. There, people that participate in sports can come, people that are part of a political party can come too. Often the people that are in sports will dress up in their sportswear. I used to swim, and people would sometimes dress up in swimsuits and parade in that. There is also a parade for those who graduate out of high school, called Russetog. There children can collect cards that the graduates often throw out and watch the cars that many will buy and remake with their own logos and music. It's a whole thing!
A lot of people will also wear Norways traditional clothes. They're called bunad or festdrakt and a person chooses the clothes depending on were they are from. People will also wear the tradition clothes of the Sami people, called kofte. But a lot of people wear nice dresses and suits.
Sorry for the long post! This is simplified, because it would literally be too long if I'm going to state every important factor and name that led to the celebration we have today. I would have put more gifs up in this post, but most of those about norway is about skam...and not so helpful.
Have a nice day, all of you ❤️

...what are russ shenanigans?
Oh, russefeiring is a traditional norwegian celebration where high school students go buck wild during their final spring semester. Where I grew up it starts around May 1st, and it'll last until May 17th (the norwegian constitutional day). There are different russ colors (red, blue and black are the most common) and you're supposed to dress accordingly in public every single day of the celebration. So most Norwegian teens will walk around looking like this for a couple of weeks:
There are a lot of different challenges you can do to get a russ knot, literally just a knot on your russe cap, and this is where the shenanigans happen. the challenges are usually kinda dumb, like you'll get knots for having public sex (everyone's over 16 so it being sexual isn't a problem, but the public part is one I guess. not that I can talk lol), drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time, crawling on the floor and biting strangers in the legs while you bark, putting a "for sale" sign on a police car, etc. It can either be kinda dangerous or just harmless fun really. There are also russe cards, which are personalized cards with a picture of the russ, a slogan, and a joke or something. Most kids collect these things like they were pokemon, and I did that as well lol. The highlight of the year was running around to every russ and asking for a card, and then comparing your collection to the ones your friends had.
But yeah, this is basically the "go stupid, go crazy" period for most Norwegian teens, it's all about drinking and fucking and causing a bit of public disturbance, but hey. That's what being a teenager is all about lol.
