Wara ningyô (straw doll) kept at Tono Museum.
Those effigies were once hung on ropes (michikiri) by roadsides and village entrances to ward off evil spirits bringing pestilence (疫病神 yakubyôgami). They were sometimes accessorized, like this one bearing a daishô (katana set) and a fearsome (oni?) face mask.
Waraningyô are also a staple of folk magic alike voodoo dolls, especially those related to eerie uchi no toki mairi ("Ox-hour shrine visits", ie witching hour).

i'm sending this on anon for reasons but like
you get anons getting at you for joking about killing people
i literally DID in a self-defense frenzy when i was younger and have mentioned it at this point and no one gets at me
i don't understand???
anyway those anons can heck off thanks
Pff, thanks... but that's self-defense. People can understand that. I make jokes about death curses. Like, "you mildly inconvenience me. Ox-hour Shrine Visit". Which... would be less okay were I to actually do that.
I appreciate your ask nonetheless.

The Oriental Arts : Visit to a Shrine at the Hour of the Ox (Ushi no toki mairi) par Harunobu, Suzuki (1724-1770) by Suzuki Harunobu (Undated, )

You're the one that "domesticated" a Gastly, right? While I would normally love to engage in a... "healthy" conversation about how what you're doing is very wrong - it wouldn't be productive, as it seems like you're dead-set on this path. Instead, I ask you: Do you know what an Ox-hour shrine-visit is? It's a type of curse.
Between 1 and 3 AM, a practitioner, dressed in the proper ritual attire, must visit a shrine with a hammer, five-inch nails, and a straw effigy of a person.
The straw effigy is placed against the shrine's sacred tree, and the practitioner hammers a nail into any one spot where they wish to cause injury on that person - every night, for one week. Afterwards, the cursed one, through supernatural intervention, will suffer fatal injury through the nailed spot. You may have seen it in use through the move "Curse" - an abridged version of the ox-hour shrine visit, yet... effective, if perhaps not to the same level.
The femur is the most difficult bone to break in your body - but when it does, it's an agonizing pain. People have died from the shock alone, their last minutes spent in absolute and utter terror, paralyzing agony. It is not a nice way to go.
Know that your last moments will be painful.
(From @occulticvioletdepths)
My this is quite threatening!~
Luckily for me I have a Very high pain tolerance!~

I wonder if some brave soul deliberately misled white people as to what skinwalkers are, to thwart their ability to know when people talk about them? (They’re human witches that take animal shape, not monsters that impersonate people.)
I am semi-convinced the Onmyōryō deliberately let pop culture misinterpret Shrine Visiting at the Hour of the Ox so that people wouldn’t be able to cast curses as easily. (You drive the nails directly into a sacred tree; not only do you not drive them into the doll, the doll actually takes on the curse and renders it harmless to the target. So nailing the doll is a self-canceling curse.)

[Game Theory] FFV:MOBW - "ox-hour shrine-visit"
Tumblr media
Whilst exploring Drop 2 - Mt.Hikami, after passing the Shrine of Dolls, you might begin to hear faint pings or clangs pierce the forest air, if you follow this sound you will find yourself in front of the Momento Tree. It soon becomes apparent that the sound you were hearing was nails being hammered into a tree, impaling straw dolls to its trunk. This particular scene is a reference to Ushi no toki mairi (丑の時参り, lit. "ox-hour shrine-visit"). You can read more about the specifics elsewhere but in short, a scornful woman will drive nails through effigies into a sacred tree near a shrine in order to place a curse upon her chosen victim. As the name suggests, she must do this during the hour of the Ox, which lands somewhere around the early hours of the morning, but we’ll say the second hour for arguments sake. She will do this for multiple nights.
Now this is where I might be far reaching but hear me out. This practice stems from the tale of Hashihime (橋姫, lit. Bridge Princess/maiden), a woman who spent lonely nights waiting for her lover to return and when faced with his infidelity became angry and jealous and turned into a vengeful spirit. The location’s name itself, “Momento” means to warn or remind. Throughout the game we play as Ren Hojo, who shares likeness and memories with his ancestor, Dr Asou, and could be seen as his reincarnation as he fulfils one of his promises to either Shiragiku or Ose Kurosawa, depending on who you pick.
During his childhood Dr Asou made a vow to Shiragiku, to become her groom after she became an “Eternal Flower” or “Pillar”. After leaving the mountain however, he suppressed these memories and “forgot” all about her. Which is why we get scenes throughout of Shiragiku asking Ren if he had “forgotten”, mistaking him for Dr.Asou. Kunihiko Asou does return to the mountain in his lifetime and kindles a love with Ose Kurosawa, making him unfaithful. Shiragiku also seems to take issue with Rui after reading their mind and realizing their feelings towards Ren(who she sees as Asou) and tries to remove Rui, who is easily influenced, from the picture. Shiragiku’s signature is her use of effigies and dolls, so I have reason to believe that the memento tree is symbolic of their relationship. Additionally, there is a Ox-like statuette in Ren’s office, now this could just be his Zodiac, or it could be referencing the Ox hour shrine curse.
Tumblr media
An important requirement of the Ushi no toki mairi, is that the participant can not be witnessed in the act, or the curse is nullified. Even when the sound of hammering can be heard whilst looking at the tree, no ghost or otherwise can be seen. Suggesting that the curse was successful. We know from FFTranslations, that there was an ending scrapped where Ren Hojo might have died, however, this curse was not for him. So what happened to Dr Kunihiko Asou? Well we don’t exactly know. We know that he left the mountain, and that his last known location for his research was at Himuro Mansion. Whether or not he perished at the hands of Kirie’s curse or whether he left prior to that is unknown.
Tumblr media
Additionally, although this story comes from the Office Hauntings at the time of the initial 3 games, I can't help but wonder if the following account helped influence the hammering sound.
I think it was around the very beginning, when we'd just started the project. When I told someone I'd be staying overnight to work, they warned me, "If you're going to be alone on this floor, leave." At the time I didn't really pay any attention to it, but while I was working that evening I heard the sound of tapping on a keyboard from the other end of the floor.Wondering if someone other than me had stayed late to work, I went to take a look, but no one was there. I couldn't hear the sound anymore, so I assumed I'd just imagined hearing it and regrouped, going back to work. After a little while, though, I heard a clattering sound...However I listened it sounded like someone tapping at a keyboard, so I started getting closer to the creepy presence. But even still, no one was there after all...Thinking it was the sound of machinery, I went to check out what the sound was, but when I got close the sound stopped. But when I returned to my seat and started working again, the sound started... It somehow felt ominous, and that day I quickly finished my work.Incidentally, the next person who stayed the night heard the same sound, but they were used to it so kept working as normal. In the end, to this day I don't know what it truly was making that noise.

Ushimairi P. 1 | Chapter One
Season: Summer
Location: Rhylink Office
Tumblr media
One day in July
Keito: ...Another productive day under my belt.
(Once more I've realized that life at ES has turned out much better than I had anticipated—so long as I keep myself focused on one thing at a time, that is.)
(I've left the Summit to Sakuma, so now I have more time I can spend working as an idol. And Akatsuki’s activities are calm and uneventful, without any trouble stirring up.)
(If I had to raise a complaint, it would be Rhythm Link's terrible structure.)
(The veterans who do a shoddy job but continue to greedily indulge in their vested interests remain in a position of power, while we, the younger generation of idols, lose the most in terms of the company's support.)
(Improving this structure will in no way be a simple matter.)
(Back when I was a student I was often preoccupied with political activities, and while I'd prefer to keep going as an idol now, I—)
Tomoya: (Sigh), this sucks...
I really wish Nii~chan was here right about now.
...No, I can’t keep relying on Nii~chan all the time. This is something I should be doing on my own.
Keito: What's the matter, Mashiro? You’re mumbling to yourself—Did something happen?
Tomoya: Uwhoa, Hasumi-senpai. When’d you get here?
Keito: Don't go talking about people like they’re ghosts. I was lost in thought, but I've been here the whole time.
Tomoya: Ah, I'm sorry!
But this is perfect timing, actually! I have a few things I'd like to talk to you about...
Hasumi-senpai, your family lives in a temple, right? So would you happen to be familiar with ghosts, curses, and other things like that?
Keito: Hm? What do you mean?
My family does perform prayers to ward off evil. But I'm not the eldest son, which means I haven’t been trained to take over the temple. So I'm no expert with the occult.
Tomoya: Ah well, I submitted a proposal for a summer horror special, but it's turning out to be more trouble than I expected. If it’s okay with you, would you mind helping me out?
Keito: Horror special…?
Tumblr media
A few days later
Keito: Whew… this mountain is much steeper than I thought it was.
Kuro: Y’already givin’ up, Hasumi-danna?
You gotta build up your endurance if you wanna survive the summer, yanno? Now that you're in a position where you can actually focus on bein’ an idol, shouldn't you put more effort into building up stamina?
Keito: You and Kanzaki are just muscleheads. Honestly, you're so incorrigible.
Rei: Kukuku. Is scaling this mountain not part of your idol activities, though?
I'm the one who's shouldering RhyLink’s affairs behind the scenes for you, so I must say I’m disappointed by your lack of stamina, Hasumi-kun.
Keito: Ugh. You sure woke up the moment night fell, Sakuma. Weren’t you the one who was wailing while the sun was still shining?
Rei:The sun was rather intense today. The heat I experienced while trapped inside that shuttle was akin to the depths of hell—but now I'm left with no such enemies as heat ♪
Tomoya: Woah, looks like Sakuma-senpai’s really getting into the swing of things. This should be perfect for our special…!
Should I have recorded more parts of the vampire act like the agency asked me to? Maybe something about Hasumi-senpai being born in a temple, too?
Keito: That's nothing more than idle gossip. Don’t get so worked up over that stuff. Sakuma's vampire act aside, I'll have you know I'm not exactly up for being marketed as a "priest" either.
Tomoya: Oh, I didn't mean it that way. I have a relatively average personality, so I'm actually pretty jealous of you guys! My family's so normal it's almost too normal, y’know~?
Keito: The grass is always greener on the other side. Well, more importantly—is this a good place, Mashiro?
Tomoya: Yeah. It's a somewhat open area, so it’s perfect!
All right, let's start recording.
Tumblr media
"A Special Summer Horror Project: The Shrine Visit at the Hour of the Ox—Does it Really Exist?! Let’s Listen for the Sound of Driving Nails in the Dead of Night!"
"So, with that said: We, the newest idols on the Rhythm Link scene, present to you a video from the nearby Black Ox Mountain!"
“Lately there are rumors that you can hear the sound of nails being driven into straw effigies in the dead of the night—And we’re here to find out the truth!”
"Today we have me, Tomoya Mashiro from Ra*bits, and these three!"
"First off, we have RhyLink’s young genius, he who presides over Demons—Undead's leader, Sakuma Rei!"
Rei: "Thank you for the introduction; It is I, Sakuma Rei~♪"
"The ways of the occult are a favorite of mine. I hope that I can make you more intimate with it, as well~"
"To those who lay curses night after night, I do hope we can get along ♪"
Tomoya: "Up next, we have Kiryuu Kuro from the unit—Akatsuki! They're a Japanese-style group known for honoring the traditional arts."
Kuro: "Oh, ’Sup. I'm Akatsuki's Kuro Kiryuu. If it's ghosts and ghouls you're talkin', just leave it to me."
Tomoya: "And last but not least, Hasumi Keito, also from Akatsuki!"
"Hasumi-senpai's family owns a temple. Temple Boy Mr. K was rumored to be a psychic back in his hometown!"
Keito: "Who are you calling Temple Boy Mr. K?"
"…I'll have you know, me being born in a temple doesn’t mean that I can see ghosts any more than I can see rays of light."
Rei:"Ohh. Are you saying you can’t see this Rei, either~? Am I nothing more than a thin shadow to you?" [1]
Keito: "Not that kind of Rei. You may be superhuman, but you’re not supernatural in the slightest." [2]
"Pardon me, we got sidetracked. I'm not sure what else there is to say, so nice to meet you."
"And, not by any means due to my family situation, I'm used to dealing with troublesome things like Sakuma."
Tomoya: "All right then, let's keep going into the mountains! Let's enjoy ourselves and see if we really meet whoever’s been hammering away at those cursed straw effigy!"

Keito uses 霊 (rei) to mean spirit here, and because it's a homophone of 零 (rei) which is in Rei's name, Rei is playing off of that in his line.
Keito calls Rei 超人 here, which is the same word that can refer to the superhero Superman. You can look it up if you don't believe me.

Kugisaki Nobara’s technique
Kugisaki’s technique is called Sureijuho, meaning Straw doll curse technique. She uses straw dolls, nails, and hammer.
Tumblr media
Her technique is derived from a literal cursing ritual in Japan called Ushi no toki Mairi (means “visiting shrine at the hour of the Ox”. The hour of the Ox is around 1 to 3 AM).
In this ritual, the practitioner (usually a scorned woman looking for revenge) uses a wara ningyo (straw doll) contained a small piece of the victim’s body or stuck with their photograph. She has to come to a shrine at the hour of the Ox wearing all white, white powder, geta (wooden sandals), and an iron ring on her head with three lit upright candles on it. She will then have to hammer long nails into the sacred tree of the shrine through the straw doll. The nails are specifically five-inches nails. This ritual must be repeated every night for seven night. It is important that she is not seen during the ritual. If there is an eyewitness, the effect will rebound to her and she is the one that will be cursed.
Tumblr media
The hour of the Ox, as the night is said to be the darkest, is thought to be when border between the world of the living and the world of the dead to be weakest while evil spirits are on their strongest. By driving nails into the sacred tree, it symbolizes breaking barrier of the two worlds to call evil spirits to haunt the victim. If ritual succeed, the victim will die.

11. What is Camille's weapon of choice? Has she ever actually used it?
//A hammer, and a very big nail, practically serving as a mini-rapier. That, and a box of small nails. And she has!
It fits the "cursing hex maniac" theme, with the ox-hour shrine visit and all. A friend drew her a long time ago with both!

Visit to a Shrine at the Hour of the Ox 「丑の時参り」
Artist: Suzuki Harunobu /   鈴木春信 Year: 1765 「Source」
In her hands the woman carries nails and a hammer to drive them into a tree to set a curse. Known as the ushi no toki mairi (ox-hour visit), the curse is cast in the dead of night (the ox hour is around 2 a.m.) and is meant to spite either a faithless lover or a successful rival. Usually, a straw effigy was nailed to a tree near a shrine, and appropriate curses were chanted during the act. Harunobu has omitted the effigy, and the woman is not wearing the iron crown bearing three candles that was normally worn on the occasion. She also does not seem to be cursing. Instead, she looks almost as if dreaming, perhaps of sweet revenge.

akasjdfk Thank you!! ;v; I have very little self control so it’ll more than likely happen. I have a basic idea which pulls inspiration from one traditional curse/ritual called Ushi no Toki Mairi or Ox Hour shrine visit. But I wanna do a bit more reading and research into other traditional magic and rituals before I get so set on one concept. But I could totally ramble about it to you if you really want!

                                        TAKIYASHA HIME
It means waterfall demon princess. She’s the daughter of Taira no Masakado ( I made a post about him, if you are interested to know more, please check it out!) and she was a powerful sorceress who raised an army of yokai and attemped to conquer Japan. After the defeating of his father, the imperial court declared Masakado’s family to be traitors and ordered their execution. But two of his children, Yoshiakado and Satsuki hime, managed to escape. They hide in a temple at the base of Mount Tsukuba. Satsuki became a nun but her brother didn’t like to study and find a job.
While exploring Mount Tsukuba, Yoshikado encountered a wizard named Nikushisen. The wizard informed him that he was the heir of Masakado and gave him a magic scroll containing the secret of frog magic. The boy returned to his sister and told everything, giving her the scroll. She studied it and became a master of frog magic and took the name of Takiyasha hime. The two brothers decided to honor their father’s memory: defeating the emperor. Another version of the story tells that Satsuki hime secretly began to perform the curse of oshi no koku mairi ( the shrine visit at the hour of the ox), every night she performed the ritual at the Kifune shrine. After 21 nights, she awakened the aranitama ( wicked spirit) of the shrine. She granted her the knowledge of onmyodo and instructing her to change her name in Takayasha hime. Her and her brother returned to Soma Castle in Shimosa and reunited the surviving soldiers of their father. Thanks to black magic, Takiyasha hime raised an army of yokai. Oya no Taro Mitsukuni, a warrior who was an expert about omyodo, had heard of her plan so he went to investigate. He arrived and Takiyasha hime disguised herself as a prostitute and tried to seduce him. He was smarter and told her about the brutal death of Masakado. Hearing that, she became emotional and fled away. That night she attacked the warrior and his army with an army of skeletons yokai. The famous painting of Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts the moment when the Takiyasha hime unleashed a gashadokuro ( gigantic skeleton) over him. Riding on top of a giant toad, she tried to attack but she was defeated. Because of her story many statues of frogs decorate Taira no Masakado’s grave.
