The Special (2020)

This one also has kind of a special place in my heart, no pun intended. I haven’t seen it yet, and I intend to be 100% fair in my scoring of it. This one is particularly of interest to me because B. Harrison Smith, the director, was my high school 20th century history teacher, and whether or not I like the film, I will always hold the belief that the man is brilliant, and I’m happy his dreams are being realized.

That said, here we go!

The Planet Savers - Darkover (Review)

The Planet Savers (Darkover Series) Author: Marion Zimmer Bradley Total Pages: 91 Total Chapters: 8 Date Published: 1958*

This book was published 3 years before Frank Herbert’s Dune. The reason for saying that would be explained later.

What is it about?

The Planet Savers is the first of a series of stories / books of the Darkover series. It took place far in the future on the planet called Darkover. Darkover orbits a red giant called Cottman's Star. It is the 4th planet in a seven planet star system. Darkover has 4 moons where in the story that every 48 years when the moons are aligned the human inhabitants suffers a deadly fever resulting the deaths of many lives. This fever is called 48-year-fever.

Planet Savers starts off with two doctors: Doctor Randall Forth and Doctor Jay Allison. At the suggestion of Doctor Forth, Doctor Jay Allison underwent a hypnosis to bring out a subsidiary personality or an alternative personality of Jay Allison. It was there he became as Jason Allison.  Jason was later assigned on a mission with other native Darkovans (humans who have been living on Darkover for many generations) and a Free Amazon guide called Kyla Raineach to go a trek over the high mountains to reach an area inhabited by a sapient species, called the Trailmen. The Trailmen are the only ones who have immunity to the 48-year-fever.  Due to Jason’s early upbringing with the the Trailmen, he is the key to convincing the Trailmen to assist in finding a cure for the 48-year-fever.

My thoughts:

This is a short book. I felt I was reading “Fellowship of the Rings” book due to the fact that a lot of the writing involves around the characters treking over a vast terrain of unique fauna and geography. Like “Fellowship of the Ring”, where Frodo and his friends got into a fight with various beings, so too was Jason Allison and his team of Darkovan men and one Free Amazon woman. It does felt a tidbit like a romance fanfic 3/4ths of the way and the last pages of the book where Jason Allison has to push away Kyla Raieach because of his own fear that once his mission is over he no longer retain his warmful personality as Jason Allison and return himself as Jay Allison, a cold and emotionless, always working Doctor.

As far as writing style is concerned, it does take some to get used to the back and forth with the First Perspective and the Third perspective. The switching between these two perspectives is to inform the reader which personality is kicking in for the main protag, Jay / Jason Allison. First person being the nice Jason Allison and the third person being the original, but cold hearted Jay Allison.

Even though this is a short novel, I do have my favorite characters such as Regis Hasturs who is of royal blood and big boastful personality to boot. 

Every time I read about him in the book, I keep thinking of this character from Doctor Who, King Yrrcanos.

It was a good thing that I have read the “introduction” to this book, written by Marion Zimmer Bradley herself in order to get a preliminary understanding on what is going to happen to Jay / Jason Allison. This is especially in part to the whole situation involving Jay/Jason’s multiple personality situation. It is intriguing that this occurred in the book, However, I felt like there’s a plot hole to how the Jay/Jason got this alternate personality in the first place. Like, did Jay/Jason got it from an accident or was this from an experiment as it was implied at the end of the book.

Similarities with Frank Herbert’s Dune

As mentioned before, there are similarities between “The Planet Savers” (the first book in the Darkover series) and Frank Herbert’s Dune. Here are the following similarities and of course some differences.

- Dune has the Fremen.with blue within blue eyes. - Darkover (The Planet Savers) has the Trailmen who have red-seared eyes. -  Dune has 2 moons - Darkover has 4 moons - Jay/Jason, a doctor, met and later on fell in love with a Free Amazon female named Kyla. - Paul Atreides, of a royal family, met and fell in love with Chani, a female Fremen - Both books talk about the geography of the planets even though Dune is all deserts while Darkover is a mixture of snow, mountains, and forests, and of course, seas. The oceans are not mentioned in The Planet Savers, but there is a map that shows the Sea of Dalereuth - In Dune, there are royal houses governing a planet. In Darkover (Planet Savers), there are royal families governing a region of land on the planet, such as Hasturs.

I have mentioned before in a prior post about how Dune has spice and Darkover has a pollen substance. Both of which involves enhancing mental, psychic capabilities. However, this pollen material on the Darkover planet is not mentioned anywhere in “The Planet Savers”, but it is mentioned in later books.

I’ll end this post with a map found in “The Planet Savers” book.

Landmark Center celebrates World Storytelling Day, March 21 and 25

At some point in life, every person goes through a transformation. Nobody’s experience is exactly the same, but the process of change happens to everyone. This universal truth is the topic celebrated during this year’s World Storytelling Day events, March 21 at 6 p.m., and a children’s event March 25 at 10 a.m. Both events are in Landmark Center’s F.K. Weyerhaeuser Auditorium. 

Since 2003, World Storytelling Day events take place on or around March 20 in more than 25 countries around the world. Each year a global theme complements the principal concept behind WSD, "If I can hear your story, it's harder for me to hate you.” 

“This year’s global theme is ‘Transformation,’” said Larry Johnson, storyteller, WSD coordinator, and medic during the War in Vietnam. “It’s a wonderful theme, because all people go through transformations, and it is a universal theme in literature, for both children and adults.” 

Storytelling is often thought of as fairy-tales, fables, and oral history, but it is also commonly used to foster peace and understanding, community building, healing, and in advocacy work. Cosponsor of the March 21 event is Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers (MAP), a coalition of over 70 Minnesota Peace and Justice organizations, including Nonviolent PeaceForce, Mn350, Move to Amend, Veterans for Peace, and multiple efforts focused on environment, racial justice, refugee relief, peace-building, and more. MAP groups will have information tables at the 6 p.m. reception. MAP also sponsors the Leslie Reindl Peace Essay Contest for high school juniors and seniors, and this year's winners will be showcased as part of the 7 p.m. storytelling performance. 

March 21 – World Storytelling Day “Transformation”: Beverly Cottman is a long time high school science teacher, is a multidisciplinary performance artist, creating at the intersection of visual, oral, and literary arts. She tells African and African-American folktales and fables as Auntie Beverly, and in all things celebrates the rich heritage and culture of the African Diaspora. Maren Hinderlie has worked as a storyteller for the Mn Historical Society, the Guthrie Theater, and other theatrical, educational, religious, or festival communities throughout the U.S. and worldwide. On World Storytelling Day she will have just returned from telling stories in Vietnam and the Philippines. Larry Johnson has taught storytelling and video since portable video equipment emerged as he ran youth "correction" camps, before serving as a weaponless army medic. As a storyteller, he won the Action for Childrens TV National Award, as well as Grand Prize in the Tokyo Video Festival. He is author of SIXTY-ONE, 61 stories calling for less war, more walking, and better Veteran care. Kubisa S. Muzenende, a respected human rights advocate, is founder and director of Let Africa Live, a non-profit in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, providing job training and psycho-social support to youth victims of war - former child soldiers, victims of sexual abuse, and survivors of violence. Kubisa has funding partners around the world, and currently lives in St. Paul with his family. There is no charge for this event, but donations to MAP will be gladly accepted and go toward peace essay scholarships for next year. RSVPs are also not required, but encouraged. The reception and information tables open at 6 p.m., and the storytelling program begins at 7 p.m. Seats for RSVPs will be held until 6:30 p.m. Questions and RSVPs can be addressed to Larry at [email protected]. 

March 25 - Children’s Activities: Storytellers will share age appropriate classic tales of transformation. From “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “The Ugly Duckling,” to “Pinocchio” and “Beauty and the Beast,” there are lessons to be learned for all ages. This event is also free, and no reservations are required. After the morning WSD activities at Landmark Center, families are encouraged to go across Rice Park to the George Latimer Central Library for more free World Storytelling Day fun. 

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Landmark Center wants to hear and share stories of transformation. From the smallest change that shaped one life, to a global movement, transformation fills our history books and personal stories. Landmark Center will share these stories throughout the month of March on its social media platforms and blog. Select stories may be printed as part of the March 21 event. Submissions will be accepted through March, but to ensure enough time to share all submissions, those wishing to participate are encouraged to send in their stories early. Stories and images can be emailed to [email protected] or submitted via Landmark Center’s Facebook or Instagram using @landmarkcenter and #worldstorytellingday.
