As indigenous Latvian citizen, I want to say that arming Ukraine is the single best use of tax payer money for decades. A strong military force, the readiness to use it and the complete dismantling of the consequences of the Russian occupation is the only way to protect the security of all of Eastern Europe and Baltic States...

OK what is WITH Harry and Marcone? Or rather what is WITH butcher/Harry acting as if Harry and marcone are anywhere CLOSE to enemies??? Marcone has literally only ever helped Harry. They have been allies 9/10 times they've interacted.
Like is harrys hostility toward marcone meant to be him hanging on through stubbornness or are we genuinely supposed to dislike the guy? Because, Jim, mate, if you want us to dislike a character you should show him doing worse things than *checks notes* protecting children at the risk of his own life, helping the protagonist at every opportunity, protecting the protagonists home city when he's dead, and uh... being vaguely flirty while doing it?

I can always make myself feel better by turning on the tv, randomly selecting a news channel and seeing how my life isn't so bad compared to the people whose lives are being destroyed by [redacted]. I am truly grateful that it's not happening to me, but I refuse to feel good about it.

“If you want peace, You must conquer yourself” -- Anon Guest
[AN: This prompt has been cut down to its soul because I really don't like epically long prompts]
They say that war never changes. They're wrong. Some elements of war remain the same, in that the side that kills the most people tends to win... but the means is ever evolving. When the world began, Dragons threw fire at the Elves, and the Elves countered it with ice and water magics.
Weapons were invented by later species. War evolved after that.
Magic got so devastating, that several treaties limited its use in battle thereafter. Some say that's how the sky islands happened, or how the magical wildlands originated. It's certainly how a great many monsters became creatures living in Alfarell. One of whom, also among the Unwelcome People, had become a king by means of conquest.

You Have My Attention: Dresden Files First Lines
I tend to give a book a few pages or even the first chapter to catch me, but for some readers, you get one line. Despite my complicated feelings about the Dresden Files as a series, Jim Butcher is a bit of an evil genius for first lines (note the plural on that). Here are the first lines of every book (excluding the short stories because that's a whole other kettle of dragons).
"I heard the mailman approach my office door, half hour earlier than usual."
--Storm Front
"I never used to keep close track of the phases of the moon."
--Fool Moon
"There are reasons I hate to drive fast."
--Grave Peril
"It raned toads the day the White Council came to town."
--Summer Knight
"Some things just aren't meant to go together. Things like oil and water. Orange juice and toothpaste. Wizards and television."
--Death Masks
"The building was on fire, and it wasn't my fault."
--Blood Rites
"On the whole, we're a murderous race. According to Genesis, it took as few as four people to make the planet too crowded to stand, and the first murder was a fratecide. Genesis says that in a fit of jealous rage, the very first child born to moral parents, Cain, snapped and popped the first metaphorical cap in another human being. The attack was a bloody, brutal, violent, reprehensible killing. Cain's brother Abel probably never saw it coming."
--Dead Beat
"Blood leaves no stain on a Warden's grey cloak."
--Proven Guilty
"Many things are not what they seem: The worst things in life enever are."
--White Night
"Winter came early that year; it should have been a tip-off."
--Small Favor
"The summer sun was busy broiling the asphalt from Chicago's streets, the agony in my head had kept me horizontal for hald a day, and some idiot was pounding on my apartment door."
--Turn Coat
"I answered the phone, and Susan Rodriguez said, 'They've taken our daughter.'"
--Changes
"Life is hard. Dying's easy."
--Ghost Story
"Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness, monarch of the Winter Court of the Sidhe, has unique ideas regarding physical therapy."
--Cold Days
"There was a ticking time bomb inside my head and the one person I ttrusted to go in and get it out hadn't shown up or spoken to me for more than a year."
--Skin Game
"My brother ruined a perfectly good run by saying 'Justine is pregnant.'"
--Peace Talks
"Apocalypses always kick off at the witching hour. That's something you know now."
--Battle Ground

Peace Talks: Niger 🇳🇪 Junta, ECOWAS & Niger 🇳🇪 President Are Haggling To Save Face
After a war of words was issued between opposing sides, it is excellent news that the Economic Community Of West African States (also known as ECOWAS) was finally able to meet with the Niger 🇳🇪 Junta & Niger 🇳🇪 President to seek out a diplomatic solution that avoids a regional proxy war.
ABUJA/NIAMEY, Aug 19 (Reuters) - A delegation from West Africa's main regional bloc ECOWAS on Saturday met Niger's ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and held talks with junta leader General Abdourahmane Tiani in the capital Niamey, a Nigerian presidential spokesperson said.
The West African group is pursuing diplomatic ways to reverse the July 26 coup. The coup leaders' acceptance of the mission could signal a new willingness to negotiate after the bloc on Friday doubled-down on its threat to use force as a last resort to restore democracy. It said an undisclosed "D-Day" had been agreed for possible military intervention. […]
In the meantime, Tiani said the junta was pursuing its own agenda and would launch a national dialogue to consult on a transition back to democracy, which "should last no longer than three years."
Both sides want a resolution to this crisis, as time is not on either side. ECOWAS wants to discourage further coups in the region & avoid a war that would extend to Mali 🇲🇱 & Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 (which would only benefit agents of chaos like terrorists & crime lords).
Junta leaders in Niger 🇳🇪 (as well as Mali 🇲🇱 & Burkina Faso 🇧🇫) desire an end to economic & military sanctions which ultimately hurt citizens & strengthen the hands of terrorists (the latter who is sadly winning throughout this crisis).
Despite the threats of war, it is unlikely that ECOWAS will invade Niger 🇳🇪 after the Senate in Nigeria 🇳🇬 rejected using military force against their neighbor.
What will probably happen is that Niger 🇳🇪 will announce a return to democracy timetable, which will be mimicked by Mali 🇲🇱 & Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 later on. ECOWAS, in return, will ease up on sanctions, & (alongside the United States 🇺🇸 & Russia 🇷🇺) provide military assistance in striking terrorist targets in the regions.
If peace talks fail, we will witness Mali 🇲🇱, Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 & Niger 🇳🇪 descend into chaos as terrorist groups like Islamic State & Al Qaeda affiliates conquer vast swaths of territory, turning the region into a never-ending war zone.

When I fist heard that Peace Talks revealed that Justine was pregnant, my first reaction was basically "What? No. Why?"
Yet in my headcanons and some fics (like A Child is a Gift) I have Thomas and Justine acting like or being parents. Thomas mentors the WC younglings. They outright adopt a changeling child in ACiaG.
I still dislike the PT/BG plot point though, but maybe it's the way it's done? That it's another accidental pregnancy like Maggie instead of them choosing to take this risk and become parents. How it's revealed that WC pregnancies are really dangerous, when Justine has almost died because of Thomas' Hunger before. That it's used to make Thomas to something reckless and suffer. That it's tied into the reveal that Justine has been Infected by Nemesis, removing her agency both now and in previous books.
Guess I still have some salt in me about the recent books.

Done the peace talks for the first time and wow. Politicians can't to anything useful even in videogames.
I love the writing though. You can see each character's personality (or lack thereof) clearly though their dialogue. Couldn't chuck Ulfric or Elenwen off the mountain (sorry Lucien, I tried), but Legate Rikke's comments were fabulous.

Listen. Jim. Mr. Butcher. My man. I get that you want to add more queer characters to the cast I get it.
Bit having them ALL be bisexual cisgender women whose sexuality is used for Male Gaze is uh... maybe not the best way to go.

Quote
Mr Abe's successor as prime minister, Fumio Kishida, left many observers pleasantly surprised when he took a very different approach to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He condemned Moscow's actions, imposed a series of sanctions alongside other G7 nations, expelled Russian diplomatic staff, and delivered support for Ukraine. "It's important to clearly show that costs will be high for action violating international law," Mr Kishida said shortly after the invasion began. As predicted, Russia responded with news that it would no longer continue peace talks with Japan, and a program allowing visa-free travel to former island residents was suspended. "[Fumio Kishida] doesn't share Abe's enthusiasm for relations with Putin's Russia. He obviously decided there wasn't much to lose because the territorial issue wasn't going anywhere," Dr Brown said.
‘Putin's war in Ukraine opened a 76-year-old wound for Japan. This time, it isn't willing to appease Russia’, ABC
