Belgian police raid Kurdish television studios
Tonight at around 02:00 Belgian police broke into the studios of the Kurdish television stations Medya Haber and Sterk Tv in Denderleeuw. Without prior notice, hundreds of police stormed the studios of Sterk TV and Medya Haber, breaking down doors and ransacking the building. Sterk TV reported that cables were cut and equipment damaged, leading to a blockade of television broadcasting.
At a time when Turkey is launching military offensives in South Kurdistan, killing Kurdish civilians in Rojava with drones and announcing the invasion of Shengal, the actions of the Belgian state are complicit in these crimes.
Sterk TV spokesperson: "This attack is a part of the genocidal concept of the Turkish occupation" & "With this attack they want to silence the voice of the Kurdish people"

Interesting article, especially thinking back to how Turkish-U.S. relations have deteriorated over the last decade. What would a better Turkey look like, and how would one get there?

Turkey earthquake: Before and after pictures show extent of destruction
By The Visual Journalism Team, BBC News
9 February 2023
Tumblr media
Two huge earthquakes and a series of aftershocks have hit Turkey, Syria and the surrounding region, killing more than 11,000 people and causing widespread destruction.
The first earthquake, which struck in the early hours of February 6, was registered as 7.8, classified as "major" on the official magnitude scale.
Its epicentre was near Gaziantep - a city of more than two million people.
Tumblr media
The intensity of the tremors also brought down tower blocks and public buildings in northern Syria.
The quake was felt as far away as Cyprus and Lebanon, both about 250 miles (400km) from the epicentre.
In Turkey, more than 8,500 people are confirmed to have died, with tens of thousands injured and thousands of buildings destroyed.
Tumblr media
The first earthquake was followed by numerous aftershocks, including one quake which was almost as large as the first - registering as magnitude 7.5 - about nine hours later with its epicentre about 60 miles (100km) further north in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras province.
Tumblr media
On Tuesday, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a three month state of emergency in the south-east of the country, covering 10 cities affected.
Tumblr media
In the Mediterranean port city of Iskenderun, in the province of Hatay, about 75 miles (120km) from Gaziantep, buildings and docks were reduced to rubble.
Tumblr media
A fire at the port of Iskenderun has also hampered aid efforts with many containers destroyed and those stuck in the port blocking supplies being brought in.

The historic Yeni Camii mosque, in Malatya, more than 100 miles (160km) from the epicentre, was extensively damaged.
Its domes collapsed, leaving it exposed to the winter sky. The mosque was destroyed by a huge earthquake in 1894 and, after reconstruction, damaged by another quake in 1964.
Collapsing buildings killed more than 2,500 people across Syria.
In the city of Aleppo, the ancient citadel ravaged by a decade of war has been further damaged by the quake.
In the village of Besnaya-Bseineh, a large block of residential and commercial buildings was reduced to rubble.

Erdoğan faces electoral defeat from opposition
The Turkish opposition secured control of the country’s largest cities in local elections on 31 March, outperforming the ruling Justice and Development (AK) party, according to The Economist.
As of 23:00 local time, the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) won 36.2% of the total vote compared to 36.2% for the AK.
Opposition parties achieved larger victories in major cities. In Istanbul, where Turks voted for mayors and city councils, city mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu secured a new term. With more than 80 per cent of ballots opened, he received 50.5 per cent of the vote, compared to 40.7 per cent for his AK Party rival Murat Kurum, a former urban affairs minister.
The results in other regions were even more unusual. Just ten months after Turkey’s general elections, the country’s main opposition party has managed to reshape its political map. In the capital city of Ankara, incumbent CHP mayor Mansur Yavaş outpaced the AK candidate by 25 percentage points. In Izmir, Turkey’s third city, the CHP mayoral contender beat his AK counterpart by 11 points.
The opposition also affected small towns and villages, traditional sources of AK’s main support, Evren Balta, a professor at Ozyegin University, noted.
The electoral map of Turkey has been transformed.

Resistance is Life: A call to stand with the people of Rojava
After the widespread bombing campaigns by the fascist Turkish state in October & December, once again Turkish bombs & rockets are destroying critical infrastructure in North-East Syria. Well-documented war crimes are evident for everyone to see.
We don’t feel the need to tell you again how much damage is done & how much this will harm the survival of the peoples of the region. We also know that we don’t need to tell you again about the brutality of Erdogan & the Turkish AKP-MHP regime.
Instead, we want to tell you about the people who refuse to give in to a barbaric enemy & insist on a life in dignity. We want to tell you about the children, the mothers, the youth. Thousands flooded the streets of cities all over NorthEast Syria today to make it clear to the fascist invaders: "We are not afraid of you, & we will never leave our lands!"
Full Call:
