How AI Kills Creatives

Human beings love to express themselves in many unique ways. From dance, to singing, to creative writing and of course, by art. Artists wrestle everyday to stay relevant to the masses while doing their favorite hobbies to earn a living.

This however may become null and void as the art community is facing another difficult challenge that could put them into jeopardy. The answer as to what can pose a danger to our beloved creative types is the hot topic for this Wednesday's piece. Let's discuss the complex situation of AI Art.

- Being a Creative Online -

For as long as I can remember, Creative work is either something industrial for advertisements or for entertainment, like comic books or animated shows. Often times, it involves expressive and also very dead people of influence like [Van Gogh], [Picasso] and [Da Vinci]

This however changed when the world was introduced to the internet. Allowing creative work to be presented to the masses, pass the borders and beyond. A timeless time capsule of creativity that can reach places traditional methods failed to do at rapid speeds.

Places like [Artstation], [DeviantArt], [Behance] and [Pixvi] are some of the most popular websites where aspiring artists can produce and express their craft to be shared and may potentially, give them the confidence to do commissions. These sites laid out a platform that can attract beginners and professionals alike for a chance to find an audience and develop themselves. This however, doesn’t mean an easy climb.

Creators need to combat against the algorithm and the occasional critics of these respective sites to be recognized. Creators need to claw their way out of the crowds to be graced by algorithm which means, they probably need to churn out backlogs of content to be seen and favored.

- Rise of The AIs -

A few years ago, I stumbled across a program called [Artbreeder]

Its a free to use program that allows you to create close to realistic portraits or stylized artworks by using a base picture and some photo manipulation for the desired effect. 

I myself have also used Artbreeder to create a version of my character; Sadie mac Lir based on the game version of her in HPHM.

Around that time, there was also the discovery of the mix and match dress up site by the name of [Picrew] which I too have used on more than one occasion. As time went on, better and smarter programs start appearing. Thus, allowing the masses to create scuffed or impressive images of whatever they so wish. From OCs to potential future babies to fiction turned real characters. 

At frightening speeds, AI programs created by intelligent software and application builders have grown to observe and steal from artists in various parts of the world to produce excellent works of art within seconds. Thus, threatening the very livelihoods of those who produce art as a job.

Enter the most controversial AI Art program [Lensa AI by Prisma Labs] Who is accused by multiple professional artists for committing art theft. Using the styles, compositions and signatures of said artists to reproduce works under the program's watermark.

- This is Art Theft! -

First, let's make a few things clear. I am not an expert to the subject of AI Art Theft but I highly recommend reading these few posts by better experts who can explain things better than me.

You can read [Megrae's Post] and [Jonlamart's Post] to gain a better understanding of the situation. From here on out however, I will be using my own words to breakdown how this can potentially kill the Creative community at large in the long run. Including us little guys.

To loosely summarize, the application takes a massive data collection of posts created by professional artists to be learned and recreated. Infamously, the application uses works of art by the late [Kim Jung Gi US] and others without the respective artist's permission to gain traffic and profit.

The disturbing factor in question, is that the developers of Lensa AI created this application with data that is NOT CONSENTED for such use. The program blatantly steals the artistic skills and styles of the Creative, allowing instant results via prompts which puts Creatives into obscurity. And, this is just the beginning.

Heaven knows, if the big guys in this industry are not safe from this AI. The time will come, where even small time artists will suffer such a fate.

Worst still, it places the general world view that the art community is an irrelevant industry. It takes away the trouble and cost of doing commissions and requests be a lot more to the AI's favor.

Looking into it further, a video essay by [Ana Isabel] (Which I highly recommend you watch as well) showed several other AI programs that has gotten better into writing articles via processing a database of samples and a few keywords. Thus, removing the need for a creative writer. (Like I am right now) 

What we are looking at right now is, for the first time in history. We are at odds of replacing Creatives from job opportunities. With these programs available, the phrase "Any Tom, Dick and Harry can do it" has gotten too close for comfort.

- Arguments Against AI Art -

Of course, the application can't work without us Creatives feeding the program samples and data. In some way, it still requires some form of human creativity to feed it data and develop and it also requires a little bit of luck to trigger the right prompt.

As stated in Ana Isabel’s video, some artists welcome the AI as an additional tool to help lay some groundwork for the artist to improve and build upon. Which creates a new label; [CyberArtist] or Cyborg Artist. 

Their argument is that the AI can be a helpful tool to conceptualize ideas as a first draft in productions or help with small time gigs such as promotional art or E-flyers. These Cyborg Artists also pointed out that AI Art will set a unique benchmark for what “good art” actually is, focusing more on the concept/ prompt than the process of creation.

Tempting as it may to say the world cares more about the idea than the craft. This is still detrimental to small timers or freelancers who want to pursue art as a profession with their own new ideas. It can discourage new and rising artists from chasing their ventures as they will be aware of the competition upon them.  

The comment; “it won't happen because, MY art is not that great" is not the point. If I were to guess. The AI will absorb any artwork that emits a large following and activity as food for the AI to feed and replicate which might even include doodles if left unchecked.

Although, not all hope is lost. As with these new improvements arise new problems. For that, new laws and new policies are being made to combat this troubling issue. Though not effective, it does raise the awareness. What is very important is that the general public must be made aware of such an issue. The world still looks down on Creatives, and sees their work as still "just a hobby" which is why this awareness needs to be raised and why we need to prove we are better.

On a hopeful note, AI is but an imitation of what is considered as great art but the one thing it can't ever do is produce Personal Art. It can't emote the hard hours spent, the process of improvement, the personalized charm, and the very heart that the artist cares about the audience.

That is something the AI CAN’T ever do. Its easy to feel fear knowing that the days as a Creative is numbered now that everyone can have access to such a program and to some, it may even be disheartening. But be aware that the True Value of an artist is the heart they have to share their craft. To show the imperfections and to do so anyway because they believe it inspires people. That is perhaps, what AI Art can’t ever kill.

Perché Dio ha creato il male? La risposta mi ha colpito fino al midollo dell'anima!

Un professore dell'università ha posto ai suoi studenti la seguente domanda:

- Tutto ciò che esiste è stato creato da Dio?

Uno studente rispose coraggiosamente:

- Sì, creato da Dio.

- Dio ha creato tutto? - ha chiesto un professore.

"Sì, signore", rispose lo studente.

Il professore ha chiesto:

- Se Dio ha creato tutto, allora Dio ha creato il male, poiché esiste. E secondo il principio che le nostre azioni definiscono noi stessi, allora Dio è malvagio.

Lo studente è rimasto in silenzio dopo aver sentito una risposta del genere. Il professore era molto soddisfatto di se stesso. Si vantava con gli studenti per aver dimostrato ancora una volta che la fede in Dio è un mito.

Un altro studente ha alzato la mano e ha detto:

- Posso farle una domanda, professore?

"Certo", rispose il professore.

Uno studente si è alzato e ha chiesto:

- Professore, il freddo è una cosa?

- Che tipo di domanda? Certo che esiste. Hai mai avuto freddo?

Gli studenti hanno riso alla domanda del giovane. Il giovane rispose:

- In realtà, signore, il freddo non esiste. Secondo le leggi della fisica, quello che consideriamo freddo è in realtà l'assenza di calore. Una persona o un oggetto può essere studiato se possiede o trasmette energia.

Lo zero assoluto (-460 gradi Fahrenheit) è una totale assenza di calore. Tutta la materia diventa inerte e incapace di reagire a questa temperatura. Il freddo non esiste. Abbiamo creato questa parola per descrivere ciò che proviamo in assenza di calore.

Uno studente ha continuato:

- Professore, esiste l'oscurità?

- Certo che esiste.

- Si sbaglia di nuovo, signore. Anche l'oscurità non esiste. L'oscurità è in realtà l'assenza di luce. Possiamo studiare la luce ma non l'oscurità. Possiamo usare il prisma di Newton per diffondere la luce bianca su più colori ed esplorare le diverse lunghezze d'onda di ogni colore. Non puoi misurare l'oscurità. Un semplice raggio di luce può entrare nel mondo delle tenebre e illuminarlo. Come si fa a dire quanto è buio un certo spazio? Misuri quanta luce viene presentata. Non è così? Oscurità è un termine che l'uomo usa per descrivere ciò che accade in assenza di luce.

Alla fine, il giovane ha chiesto al professore:

- Signore, esiste il male?

Questa volta era incerto, il professore rispose:

- Certo, come ho detto prima. Lo vediamo tutti i giorni. Crudeltà, numerosi crimini e violenza in tutto il mondo. Questi esempi non sono altro che una manifestazione del male.

A questo, lo studente rispose:

- Il male non esiste, signore, o almeno non esiste per se stesso. Il male è semplicemente l'assenza di Dio. È come l'oscurità e il freddo - una parola creata dall'uomo per descrivere l'assenza di Dio. Dio non ha creato il male. Il male non è fede o amore, che esistono come luce e calore. Il male è il risultato dell'assenza di amore Divino nel cuore umano. È quel tipo di freddo che arriva quando non c'è caldo, o quel tipo di buio che arriva quando non c'è luce.

Cala la notte, Guillaume si allunga su di me, mi bacia, mi carezza, mi saluta, poi si infila i tappi per le orecchie, si gira su un fianco e dorme. Cioè prende la decisione conscia di spegnersi. Non passano due secondi che lo sento beatamente allontanarsi dal mondo, il respiro regolare e ronfante.

Inizia per me il lungo calvario notturno, la battaglia quotidiana tra me e me e me e me. 

Gli occhi sbarrati nel buio e una domanda fa capolino: ma perché le melanzane sono viola? Bam. Mi parte un pippone nella testa, un seminario botanico in cui gli esperti convitati siamo io e io e io e io. Rintraccio l'idea di prisma, della luce riflessa, la pigmentazione, la percezione del colore attraverso l'occhio umano, le carote viola modificate geneticamente per diventare arancioni in onore della famiglia reale olandese, passo ai cani che vedono in bianco e nero e puff: sono le quattro.

È la fase del panico: dormi, mi dico, devi dormire, ripeto, o sennò c'avrai la testa nel culo tutta la giornata, le occhiaie appese, la pelle grigia. Niente funziona. Mi ritrovo come Pentothal, che grida al suo pisello moscio "Rizzati! E rizzati!" senza ottenere risposta. L'unica differenza è che il mio cervello mi guarda da dentro, eccitato ed erto, e manco ci pensa a cedere e lasciarmi finalmente sprofondare in uno di quei bei sonni riposatori post-coitali. 

Mi incazzo e puff: sono le sette meno dieci. 

Il mondo fuori rivive. Un camion passa nella strada, un vicino avvia il motore della sua auto, un altro sbatte il portone d'ingresso, il barboncino del signor Châtel abbaia. In questa sinfonia caotica chiudo gli occhi, fino alla sveglia che suona tra un'ora o per ancora cinque minuti più in là.

Sentai adaptation ideas (free to use)

(Here are some of the rough outlines of my Sentai adaptations, because I put a lot of thoughts into them and will eventually write them into full stories.That said, feel free to use any of these rough outlines if you want-these are initial ideas, and they might very well change as I write them and flesh them out further.)

-ToQger/Prisma Tracks: The Prisma Line is a mysterious railway that is a haven for the lost and marginalized, giving them a home and a safe place. Bad guys are the Bureau of Human Despair, trying to upend the train so that they can bring despair to the denizens. Naturally, all the villains are rich Capitalists. (This is just a modern update of the Sentai’s Shadow Line being aristocrats.) (Well, except Agent Unicorn, AKA the counterpart of Mothma/Mozuma from Kyuranger, and an ally of the Bureau. He’s a Spooky Secret Agent from an Evil Space Empire-but we don’t need to worry about that.)

-Zyuohger/Beast Force: a Pai Zhua Dropout and his new alien friends protecting the world through the power of video games and digital animal AI programs. (Also, the main villain, Azald’s counterpart, is a former member of an Evil Space Empire-but we don’t need to worry about that.)

-LuPat/Earth Defense, has two stories- one story is three rookies trying to stop a crime wave and uncover a Conspiracy™ in Earth Defense, while the other side is three Robin Hood-esque Rangers are trying to stop the Conspiracy™ and don’t like these rookies getting in their way. Both stories converge with both teams trying to stop The Conspiracy™. (Also, the ally to Earth Defense who looks identical to Balance and someone who helps maintain The Conspiracy™ is a high-ranking general of the Evil Space Empire-but we don’t need to worry about that.)

-Kyuangers/Zodiac Force: We do, in fact, need to worry about that. (AKA a dozen colorful Rebels defeat an evil empire and an Eldritch incarnation of Nothingness through the power of Friendship, Space Magic, and cheap copies of the Cosmic Fury Zords.) 

BONUS: JETMAN/BIRD FORCE Evil Bird Waves turn people into Evil Bird Hybrids. The bad guys are Feathered Dinosaurs with Magic Bird Powers who fight the Rangers, who themselves have Bird Powers. Only storyline unconnected to the Evil Space Empire.It’s a very cheesy season until it isn’t-then it’s still cheesy, but mixed in is an exploration of grief and loss. (The Black Ranger dies in the Sentai-which is kept here, with the twist that it’s not a sacrifice but a Terminal Illness. And the death sticks.)

European Union regulators continue to highlight the need to rein in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, even after the EU legislature adopted a landmark AI law this spring.

But how should EU institutions move forward as the technology develops?

Finland's ruling National Coalition Party (NCP) opposes stricter regulation of AI, according to Helsingin Sanomat, which reports on candidates' responses in its election compass.

The results of the HS election compass reveal that all parliamentary parties apart from the NCP and Movement Now said they believe that the EU should regulate artificial intelligence more strictly than it does now.

Based on the compass, the Left Alliance took the most critical view of AI. In her response, party chair and EU candidate Li Andersson wrote that AI alters societies, economies as well as social and power dynamics.

NCP candidate Aura Salla, on the other hand, wrote that the EU currently overregulates its digital market. Salla, a current MP, previously worked as a lobbyist in Brussels for Meta, the technology company that owns Facebook and Instagram.

Lidl's shopping list

Finland's S and K groups are criticising Lidl's price comparison that — unsurprisingly — found the German grocer to have the lowest prices.

The chain commissioned a price comparison in seven cities, where Lidl claims to be the cheapest option in each. It said its shopping basket cost 20 percent less than similar ones at K stores, 13 percent less than S-Market's food trolley and seven percent less than Prisma's basket.

"They have chosen the timing and the products that have been compared, and they certainly haven't picked the cheapest products off the shelves. This is a very subjective result," said Sampo Päällysaho, SVP for Groceries at S-Group, told Iltalehti.

Flax and nettles, according to Hufvudstadsbladet, reporting on research into plant fibres found at burial sites.

People in this part of the world wore garments made of flax, hemp and nettles, said HBL.

At the end of the Iron Age and the beginning of the Middle Ages, people wore clothes made from fibres of local plants such as flax, nettles and wool. Cotton gained popularity only at a much later stage, according to Helsinki University researcher Jenni Suomela, who has developed new methods for identifying plant fibres that often look identical under the microscope.

Perché Dio ha creato il male? La risposta mi ha colpito fino al midollo dell'anima!

Un professore dell'università ha posto ai suoi studenti la seguente domanda:

- Tutto ciò che esiste è stato creato da Dio?

Uno studente rispose coraggiosamente:

- Sì, creato da Dio.

- Dio ha creato tutto? - ha chiesto un professore.

"Sì, signore", rispose lo studente.

Il professore ha chiesto:

- Se Dio ha creato tutto, allora Dio ha creato il male, poiché esiste. E secondo il principio che le nostre azioni definiscono noi stessi, allora Dio è malvagio.

Lo studente è rimasto in silenzio dopo aver sentito una risposta del genere. Il professore era molto soddisfatto di se stesso. Si vantava con gli studenti per aver dimostrato ancora una volta che la fede in Dio è un mito.

Un altro studente ha alzato la mano e ha detto:

- Posso farle una domanda, professore?

"Certo", rispose il professore.

Uno studente si è alzato e ha chiesto:

- Professore, il freddo è una cosa?

- Che tipo di domanda? Certo che esiste. Hai mai avuto freddo?

Gli studenti hanno riso alla domanda del giovane. Il giovane rispose:

- In realtà, signore, il freddo non esiste. Secondo le leggi della fisica, quello che consideriamo freddo è in realtà l'assenza di calore. Una persona o un oggetto può essere studiato se possiede o trasmette energia.

Lo zero assoluto (-460 gradi Fahrenheit) è una totale assenza di calore. Tutta la materia diventa inerte e incapace di reagire a questa temperatura. Il freddo non esiste. Abbiamo creato questa parola per descrivere ciò che proviamo in assenza di calore.

Uno studente ha continuato:

- Professore, esiste l'oscurità?

- Certo che esiste.

Questa volta era incerto, il professore rispose:

- Certo, come ho detto prima. Lo vediamo tutti i giorni. Crudeltà, numerosi crimini e violenza in tutto il mondo. Questi esempi non sono altro che una manifestazione del male.

A questo, lo studente rispose:

- Il male non esiste, signore, o almeno non esiste per se stesso. Il male è semplicemente l'assenza di Dio. È come l'oscurità e il freddo - una parola creata dall'uomo per descrivere l'assenza di Dio. Dio non ha creato il male. Il male non è fede o amore, che esistono come luce e calore. Il male è il risultato dell'assenza di amore Divino nel cuore umano. È quel tipo di freddo che arriva quando non c'è caldo, o quel tipo di buio che arriva quando non c'è luce.

- Addressing Some Corrections -

Its been a couple of days since my post on;

I figured I should address some corrections and bring forth some updates on the situation. First, I have to apologize for lumping Picrew with the likes of Lensa AI as I am very kindly educated.

Picrew is a fun mix and match site that heavily involves the respective artist's involvement in terms of the pose, style, alterations and colors. Looking into it further, the site is also [strongly against repost without credit] for that misinformation. I am very sorry~

On the other hand, Artbreeder involves real-life photographs of people but the site expressed that [the samples are for free use] While I have used both sites for my own nefarious plans (just kidding) I am personally a bit taken aback with my own ethics using Artbreeder.

Onto main topic at hand, I hear quite a number of arguments stating that this is just how things are supposed to be for the creative industry. That it's inevitable for the requirement of fast art by the masses, to enquire such a program and we as the "traditional" artists should work with the program instead.

Again, tempting as I am to say people care more about the idea than the craft. Part of the idea is in the craft itself. Its an intense and vulnerable labor that makes humans unique to other animals. To express our emotion, share our experiences and perception on the world. Imperfections and biases included.

This concern and protest is NOT the case of gatekeeping art, rather a genuine response of disapproval to such blindsided degradation towards artists and it's just blatant theft. While you can argue that "artists steal all the time" This is NOT the same case for AI as clearly stated. I want to do one final highlight on [Mochosum’s Post] and [Jojoesart’s Post] as it takes a more aggressive shed of light on the issue.

Its not the same as say, an amateur artist tracing the pose from some popular pop culture icon, maybe change the character then posting them online for entertainment purposes. (Which is a whole other can of worms I need to address) AI Art is stealing the owner's properties, selling them in broad daylight then beat up the owner. Claiming they (The Cyborg Artists) are the rightful owners.

Its even more infuriating when you read the news that the platforms for artists is not entirely “for nor against” this movement. This is still an ever growing case and I am very curious to see where it goes from here.

Personally, while I try to stay unbiased. I am NOT for AI Art. Its a major insult to artists big and small and it insults those aspiring to learn the craft and develop their own. With that in mind, it's a proper close to this dark story and my thoughts on it. So, its back to work for me and my silly little project and...I'll see you lads soon~

Sfortuna di ferro, fortuna di(vento).

Sono figlio di un epoca in cui la resilienza era un modo di essere, l'incarnazione perfetta di uno stile di vita tutta italiana, di una sfaccettata sfortunata, e assurdamente fortunata normalità. La mia. E non si tratta di sfortuna, si tratta di vita, che accade, anche il più privilegiato ne accuserebbe il colpo. Forse ai miei occhi, come sotto la lente di un prisma di cristallo, quella sventura me la sono fatta scivolare sulla pelle, si perchè con gli occhi entusiasti di un bambino, alcune prospettive di quel prisma non erano così pungenti, tutto sommato bastava che guardasse altrove. Ma quel bambino, che giocava nel vicoletto, quel ragazzo, che invece del biliardo, preferiva le tavole scricchiolanti di un teatro con il suo silenzio sacrale, quella fortuna un pò voleva che accadesse infondo, anche se nel mentre, la sfortuna scorreva, la allontanava rifugiandosi in quel camerino che sentiva di più come casa, rifugio contento, segreto, di certo più accogliente dove poter mettere in sordina tutta quella sfortuna, dove poter trasformarla, vestirla, truccarla, e ironicamente diventarla. E nel contempo tutto accadeva. Io crescevo, e nella mia sfortuna diventavo sempre più fortunato, qualche sipario, il mio nome sulla locandina insieme ad altri nomi e qualche soldino in tasca, e nello stesso momento resilienza e vita che accadeva. Per la mia sfortuna di ferro c'era da temere, nel frattempo fortuna di(vento). Ma non mi sento un privilegiato, resto contento, certo, ma conscio del pretesto che una situazione così fortunata può comportare, intanto lascio che avvenga, che mi abbracci, e nonostante il disagio che posso provare, in quell'abbraccio io rimango, lascio che mi insegni il suo calore. A vent'anni come a cinquanta la prospettiva non cambia, gli insegnamenti sono gli stessi, ed anch'io resto lo stesso ragazzo che invece del biliardo, preferisce il teatro con il suo silenzio sacrale quando nella mia vita c'è troppo frastuono, e il cinema, quando di quel frastuono ne sento il bisogno. La mia fortuna l'ho costruita, abitata, navigata. L' ho resa bellissima, accomodata, persa e ritrovata, le ho sorriso, e l'ho conquistata.

So turns out the coordinate math behind hexagonal chess is... Simple I think? If we just agree not to use the directions I've labeled as x and z all we have to do is generate regular chess moves in 3D (a solved problem by yours truly) and then take whatever is in the y-coordinate and add it to both the x and z coordinates. Then we just drop the y coordinate and we should get something 2D that a computer can store into an array. The non-squareness of the board is going to be interesting to deal with but I expected this to be... Well more interesting. I'm kind of disappointed tbh

As a side note I threw this through an AI art style transfer called Prisma because I'd like to post more handwritten notes, but I also want them to be a bit prettier. Interesting experiment on two fronts
