Finally working on giving justice to G3 Clawdeen since Mattel hates her so.
Tumblr media
The braids look black in this lighting, but they are actually dark brown. I plan on adding some purple accents once the hair I ordered arrives (this hair was repurposed from an LOL OMG).

Former client wanted to know how I'd do flat bangs on a barbie and here's an approximation of the japanese dome style I'd use:
find the height of the dome on the head, for barbie we bring it forward, for more spherical heads we'd start here.
find the end of the eyes (the outest eye corner) and add a little - on humans your bangs are wider than your eyes
draw a dome and fill with hair with a tight line around the upper edge where the lilac meets the yellow
heat seal it down then cut below the brows, starting at the top of the eyes and gradually cutting minute amounts with tiny sharp scissors (flat or curved or "hime" is up to you)
I've included an example of the dome style done on a W.i.t.c.h doll

Miracle Molly custom. (Clothes in progress).
Tumblr media
I haven’t read anything containing her yet, and I’m not particularly motivated to, but the look is so good. Might touch up the eyes a little.

Rerooted Barbie Looks #16 and put her on a petite m2m body. 🩷👱🏻‍♀️
Not finished with her yet. I might add some pink highlights and trim her hair so it’s not so long.

Okay. This is this month's ultimate goal. A reroot.
I dunno what hairstyle should be used for Kaori chan.
The hair is Saran btw.

So I'm seeing stuff about a new hair fiber called Synatra, and I know nothing about it or it's quality but I would love to be enlightened if anyo6is familiar. I could only really find a reddit post asking for advice and saying it was like a mix between Saran and kanekelon. Otherwise, there is not a ton of texture opinion or how it holds to styling, color, or anything.

hello there! this may be a bit of an odd question but i thought you might know. i got a doll head off aliexpress that doesn’t have any rooting holes. i found the doll it would go to and she does have rooted hair. do you have any ideas as to how i could invent a rooting pattern?
i’d also like to say i’m planning on bangs if that changes anything. my apologies if this is confusing, i’ve never done anything like this before, thanks bunches <3
Nah, I gotcha!
First question: does the doll have score lines? Not all, but many, doll heads will have score lines, as a sort of guide for factory workers to know where to put the hair, that can be a good place to start to figure out your hair line
Tumblr media
If not, figure out where you want your doll's hair line to be. Do you want a high forehead? or a low forehead?
Tumblr media
Trace the doll's head where you want the hairline to be, and you can adjust until it looks right to you.
Since you want bangs, you'll also need a middle part in the hair.
Tumblr media
You want to go at least halfway down the scalp, but you can go all the way if you want her to have twin ponytails or something like that.
Aside from the part and hairline, the rest of the hair can just be rooted more sparsely and random. Personally I just go in a sort of spiral bc I find that simple enough. I wouldn't worry about marking it is what I'm trying to say.
It's pretty common practice (though not entirely necessary) to paint the scalp the color of the hair, as it helps hide the scalp in areas the hair might be thinner, but the paint can also work as your guide.
Tumblr media
Look at other dolls you might own if you want to see how hair is rooted, that can be helpful as well, especially if that doll has the style you're going for.
Hope this helped! Good luck with your project!

hello! hope this isn't a bother, but you're an expert on rerooting, so I had to ask; do you have any tips for rerooting rainbow high dolls (or hard headed dolls in general?) I've done so many dye jobs and at this point I'd just like to fully reroot some of my doubles/customs, but I've never done rerooting on harder scalps. Does the rerooting needle size matter more? Thank you for your time!
Hi, rerooting harder heads does break needles but there are a few ways to help :
Game changer: A heating pad set it to very hot and wait for the head to get squishy. For some heads you have to alternate rerooting and waiting for the heat to seep in and wrap the hair in a rag to avoid it getting frazzled by the heat. If using a hairdryer, remember to keep the hair covered with that rag.
Helps a little: Good quality needles, name brand embroidery crewels
Helps somewhat: slightly thicker needles: I use size 8 for barbie but size 7-6 (thicker metal) for hard heads. A size 6 would be good for rainbow high, the original rooting pattern is tight around top and looser in the back so you might want to switch to a smaller needle just for the front line.
Also very important: Rotating the head to match your rooting angle so that you're not putting sideways pressure on that needle. It's when you're in a groove and forget to move the head to match your angle that I snap the most needle 'forks'.
Finally: tightening the rooting tool with a pair of pliers and with something jammed in for the needle to block on. I put a nail inside my pin vise so that the needle rests on it and isn't poked down into the pin vise by pressure. The less the needle can move around, the less likely to snap.
This does mean you then have to cut needles to a specific size as they'll be standing on that block. I like about 1cm of needle poking out of the tool. It's not ideal for the drag and plug method where you place hair down and pull plugs from it: it helps to have longer needles for that, but it's a lot less leeway for accidental bending.
I'd also like to recommend working at a desk on extra padding and lighting so that your face is closer to the work for more delicate work like harder heads or damaged partings for example.
Another pitfall with rainbow high is that they are rooted with big plugs, close to each other and often over each other because of partings and streaks. That can leave big holes or holes too close together that could crack. I recommend starting with a doll whose hairstyle isn't too complex and moving the parting to somewhere with fewer holes.
Good luck with your projects!

Awful pictures but Clawdeen is done and now I will scurry into reroot hibernation until Christmas passes since I have no more dolls to reroot.
