Rewatch: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" (S1Ep11)
Summary: An invisible force is attacking those around Cordelia, and it’s up to Buffy to figure out how to put things to an end before Cordelia is next.
Written by: Joss Whedon, Ashley Gable, Thomas A. Swyden
Directed by: Reza Badiyi
Aired: May 19th, 1997
WARNING: This post contains spoilers.
I wish I could find words for how excited I am to talk about this episode. It was genuinely one of my favorites and that’s saying a lot, I think. The nostalgia I have for this episode is incomprehensible. Let’s jump in.
Recap: As the May queen coronation approaches, Cordelia is buzzing with excitement. Meanwhile, Buffy feels invisible as it has been made clear how little she fits in, even with her friends. Cordelia’s date gets attacked by a floating baseball bat. When Buffy investigates, she finds the attacker left behind a message. While the rest of the Scoobies do research to figure out what they’re dealing with, Buffy talks to Cordelia. Harmony is pushed down the stairs and Buffy follows an invisible assailant. The gang realizes that the attacker is Marcie Ross, a girl who went missing six months ago. They theorize that Marcie was invisible to everyone else, and so she literally turned invisible. She has a vendetta against Cordelia. After Cordelia finds one of her teachers unconscious, she asks for help. The rest of the gang stays behind to come up with ways to make Marcie visible again while Buffy and Cordelia head to the Bronze for the coronation. Marcie lures the gang into the basement and attempts to suffocate them before attacking Buffy and Cordelia. She takes them to the Bronze, where she plans to mutilate Cordelia’s face. Buffy stops her though, and two government men come and take Marcie away.
Overall Thoughts: This is one of the episodes I distinctly remember from my childhood. I seriously don’t know how anyone could forget this episode, it feels like one that would become permanently ingrained in people’s minds. That being said, I think I was most looking forward to this episode, and it didn’t disappoint.
I only have one real issue with this episode, and it’s something that comes up at the very beginning of the episode and is dropped after that. In the beginning, we see Buffy stumble out of the library and her bag spills, revealing all of her miscellaneous weaponry. This is fine, I guess, but it’s something we’ve already seen used before, in the first episode. The second time isn’t really necessary, and in my opinion, it’s too much. It’s used as a moment to highlight the ‘otherness’ Buffy feels throughout the episode, and it sets up an interesting dynamic between her and Cordelia.
We’ve talked about it many times, but just to hammer it home: A lot of this season is spent with Buffy trying to be a normal girl, where everything around her shows just how different from everyone she is. There’s an underlying connection between her and Cordelia, as throughout the season we are reminded that Buffy used to be exactly like Cordelia. This is something that the episode plays with a lot, and I enjoy it.
Buffy spends this episode being the outsider, which is fitting because the episode focuses on a girl who was so much of an outcast that she literally turned invisible. This feeling that Buffy has, and the empathy that she has towards Marcie at first, makes Buffy and Cordelia’s inevitable team up even better.
This episode also plays into the strength that the last episode had - connecting the season-long arc of the Master within the plot of a totally unrelated episode. I like when they do this a lot more than just regular filler episodes, it makes the show feel much more like the show that I know and love. There’s also a bit of foreshadowing in this episode, if you look carefully. Angel and Giles team up in this, and there’s a lot of talk about a codex that contains prophecies centering around the Slayer. It’s a great set up for the next episode.
Overall, this was an incredible episode. I found myself excitedly looking at the parallels and noticing little things I never would have seen if not looking at it through an analytical eye. I’m looking forward to the next episode, and I’m getting excited to see where the rest of the series takes us.
Fashion Corner/Costuming: I don’t think I have been more excited for this section in my entire life than I am right now. There is such a small detail in the costuming this episode that I caught, and I’m glad I did because it adds so much to the episode.
Like we talked about previously, Buffy is very uniquely isolated in this episode. What drives this home is a costuming detail. In the first half of the episode, almost every one of the teens are wearing the same colors: Baby blue, light pink/orange, and green. The only one not wearing these colors -- sans a few background actors -- is Buffy. It’s a little visual cue to show how ‘other’ Buffy feels in the beginning. I loved it, and I would love to see more.
Characterization: Remember how I’ve been complaining about how shallow and one dimensional Cordelia has been written this season? This episode made it all worth it. Arguably, the writers knew what they were doing this whole time.
At first, I really thought this was going to be another episode of Cordy being unbearable. I’m happy to say I was proven wrong. This episode, particularly the second half, shows us a Cordelia that is almost, almost unrecognizable. She’s vulnerable, and we’re given glimpses of the Cordelia she goes on to be. It’s made clear that for the most part, the vapid mean girl who only thinks of herself is a facade. When she isn’t playing the part, she’s human in the best way. It’s a nice change of pace for the Cordelia we’ve had all season, even if it ends the second any of her friends are around.
I want to see more of this Cordy that we saw this episode, and I know I will, so I’m glad I held on for as long as I did.

TREKMATCH! # 513 - DS9's "Past Tenss" vs 1990's Misery
MISERY
A famous author of schlocky romance novels gets in a snowstorm accident where he almost dies but he is luckily rescued by his number one fan, how sweet! Except, uh, maybe she's a little less than stable, and upset that he killed off her favorite character (named Misery) in his newest novel? Kathy Bates steals the show obviously but I wonder if Stephen King regrets that he never got success in the world of so-called "high literature." He's got several novels where the main character is a writer who laments their commercial success over critical success, and there's a ton of asides in IT about creative writing workshops. Like, sorry for all your international acclaim as perhaps the best known writer of our time? You'd rather have like a National Book Critics Circle award sticker on the cover of your unread books in a bargain bin?
GRADE: B+
STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE - "Past Tense"
A transporter accident beams Sisko, Bashir, and Dax into the dark ages of American history - the 2020s, ulp! It turns out the 2020s were a shitty time in the USA, where severe gaps in wealth and opportunity led the impoverished to scramble however they could to make ends meet while cops pushed them around and sometimes killed them. The wealthy ignored all this and pretended the system would help the poor out. Wotta fun science fictional television program!
GRADE: B+
Victory to Misery, so Trek is up 259-254!
Stephen King movies are up 10-9!

Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Directed by: Reza Badiyi
Written by: Ashley Gable and Thomas A. Swyden
Starring: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendan, Anthony Head, Charisma Carpenter, David Boreanaz, Mercedes McNab, Armin Shimerman, and Clea Duvall
Welcome to the penultimate episode of season one, in which feeling figuratively invisible leads to be literally invisible. And batshit. Also, Angel is back briefly to conveniently forward the season arc. But who cares because fashurn!
Outfit 1
Tumblr media
I loved this outfit. I even had something close to it. I had a plain white t-shirt and a knee length pink skirt. The cut of the t-shirt wasn’t the same, because the cut was so fucking hard for me to find. The skirt was a little different - Buffy’s is a cherry pattern. Mine was floral. It was one of those lined skirts with a sheer overlay that were so coveted in 1997-1998. It also had a frill around the hem. But it was close enough.
Tumblr media
Sadly I did not have the boots. Buffy wears these boots or similar in most episodes of season 1. I wanted them so badly. But tragically I could not.
Real talk - my legs are ok. But I have small feet and defined calves. And I know what you might be thinking. You’re thinking ‘so?’ or ‘what does that mean?’ Well, I’ll tell you what it means. It means knee high leather boots were not possible for me. I’d try on a size 7 boot, try to zip them up, and have them stop halfway up my calf. The tears wouldn’t come then, no, not in a shoe shop or department store. They’d come later. At home. But also some times in a shoe or department store. So I usually wore sneakers with my ‘Buffy outfit’ much like I did with my ‘Dharma outfit.’
But don’t worry about Little Sallie because I’m ok now. Years later I found some boots that zipped during the ‘pirate boots’ craze of 2006. And you can find stretchier versions of knee high and over the knee boots now. Also I don’t really want to wear knee high boots any more. Though given late 90s fashion is seeping back into our consciousness I’ll probably end up fighting tears in a shoe or department store very soon.
Tumblr media
Her hair here is great. Is it more blonde?
Tumblr media
The jacket from Never Kill a Boy on the First Date appears to be back and it is not unwelcome.
Xander and Willow appear to be matching again. When this happens it never seems to be Xander dressing better. It’s always Willow dressing worse. Though to be fair this isn’t bad from Xander.
Tumblr media
Giles’ tie deserves attention.
And we do have a wonderful reference to them being the Scooby Gang.
Tumblr media
I want that shirt. I have a thing for t-shirts. I’m something of a collector. Mostly because they’re usually white and I spill a lot of food on them. I went through a phase of buying vintage t-shirts and band t-shirts. Not buying a band t-shirt at a gig was like the proverbial tree falling in the forest: did it happen at all?
Cordelia is looking quite presidential in this episode, which makes sense given she’s vying for May Queen with... Nobody. She’s decided to serve up some Jackie Kennedy realness for the campaign, which I like.
Tumblr media
This is during the campaign. Harmony is trying to match without overshadowing. She is doing a very good job because no one would look at her and Cordelia and think she’s winning any elections with a mess like that. No wonder she gets pushed down the stairs.
Outfit 2
Tumblr media
I can’t tell if this is a brown leather jacket or a black leather jacket.
Tumblr media
This is blurry, so it’s unclear, but is she wearing some kind of leather pantsuit for hunting? Has Harmony inspired Buffy and if so, are we still in the nightmare realm from last episode?
Tumblr media
It might be black. But still. The high ponytail is good.
Tumblr media
Cordelia is looking royal as fuck. I think this was during a time when the whole Shakespeare-style, punk princess kind of thing was in. It may have started with Romeo + Juliet and continued into films like 10 Things I Hate About You and Gwyneth Paltrow’s awards style after Shakespeare In Love. This appears to be crushed velvet, probably designed to crush Cordy’s enemies.
Outfit 3
Tumblr media
Cordelia is winning everything this episode. Buffy’s look is... Ok. But Cordelia’s game is too strong. This is what she wore when she was officially elected May Queen. It is incredible.
Buffy, meanwhile, is not doing well. It feels like she’s half-dressed for school and half-dressed for slayage. It’s too matchy-matchy for my liking.
Tumblr media
There’s also a jacket. This fifty shades of blue look is making me blue. As in sad. I do love those sunglasses.
Tumblr media
Cordelia is doing the slaying here. You can’t see it here but she’s matched the dress with a yellow ribbon headband. Buffy should be paying more attention. This appeals to me a lot because I do love a nod to the 50s and 60s. I had a similar dress to this around 2007. It’s white with gold thread and I don’t think it fits anymore, which is depressing. I liked to wear it while holding one of those old school champagne glasses. The glass would preferably be filled with champagne. And refilled regularly.
Tumblr media
We should all be paying attention to Giles’ tie game, which is very strong.
This week’s villain is a girl who was ignored so much at school she became invisible, meaning you don’t always need superpowers or an invisibility cloak or a cyborg body to become invisible. Just a shitty high school experience.
This is Marcie, the girl in question, pre-invisibility:
Tumblr media
This is Marcie post-invisibility:
Tumblr media
I feel very bad for Marcie. High school is bullshit. But it’s ok because after Buffy stops her from mutilating Cordelia at the Coronation she's taken away to be trained as an assassin. WHICH IS AWESOME.
Outfit 4
Tumblr media
I wear things like this to work, but without the boots. And weird graphic on the t-shirt.
Tumblr media
Buffy’s hair looks pretty much flawless here.
Xander’s shirt seems about right.
It’s post-election and Cordelia is back to her pre-campaign wardrobe.
Tumblr media
Pretty sure I saw this at H&M last week. That should scare me, but it doesn’t. Maybe I’m settling in to middle age.
And that’s it! Next up is the season finale. We’re now just one episode away from... Buffy’s haircut. You have no idea how excited I am.
Until then, Slayerettes.

TREKMATCH! # 339 - DS9's "Home Front/Paradise Lost" vs 2018's Climax
CLIMAX
In this two hour anti-drug PSA masquerading as an arthouse horror flick, some dancers all gather together in a remote French complex. Everything is going cool with some nice choreographed dance scenes until *gasp* somebody spikes the punch with LSD and everybody loses it! It's a French movie so I am always a little dubious of the racial politics but it's not exactly subtle here when the characters of color all instigate various acts of violence. Anyway good long shots but terrible movie!
GRADE: D-
STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE - "Home Front/Paradise Lost"
There's a changeling attack on planet Earth (hey that's where I'm from!) so a zealous admiral puts soldiers on the street and starts restricting people's freedom. Well that's no kinda nice society if you ask me! Well what if the admiral just faked the attack because he wanted more power, hmm??? Well that's an even less kinda nice society! Featuring the Defiant taking on an Excelsior class ship.

RIP REZA BADIYI
You may not have heard Reza Badiyi's name before, but you have almost definitely seen his work, whether directly on now classic American TV programs, or the influence those programs had on film and TV today. He was an Iranian American who came to the U.S. in the 1950s to study filmmaking and ended up with a Director's Guild record after completing his 400th television episode. Read on to learn about his life and many contributions to the world of television entertainment. May he rest in peace.
From LA Times:
Reza Badiyi, a prolific television director whose credits included "Get Smart" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and who set a Directors Guild of America record for directing the most hours of episodic series television, has died. He was 81.
Badiyi, who had been dealing with a number of medical issues in recent weeks, died Saturday at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, said family spokeswoman Bita Milanian. The Iranian-born Badiyi, who launched his filmmaking career making documentaries in Iran before moving to the United States in 1955, began directing for TV in the late 1960s. Among his long list of credits are "Mission Impossible," "The Rockford Files," "Baretta," "Mannix," "Starsky and Hutch," "The Six Million Dollar Man," "The Incredible Hulk," "Cagney & Lacey," "Falcon Crest," "In the Heat of the Night," "Baywatch" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Badiyi also directed episodes of the original "Hawaii Five-O"and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and was involved in the creation of both shows' memorable title sequences. In March 1998, Badiyi achieved a Directors Guild milestone for directing the most hours of episodic series television when he finished his 400th TV episode, for the sci-fi series "Sliders." Badiyi's last credit as a director was the 2006 feature film "The Way Back Home." In 2009, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Noor Iranian Film Festival. A year later, members of the Iranian American community honored Badiyi for his 80th birthday and his 60th year in the entertainment industry at UCLA's Royce Hall. "He was very passionate about his Persian heritage," said Milanian, recalling that Badiyi could recite Persian poetry by heart. "Even though he moved away from Iran, he was still very connected to his community." Badiyi was born April 17, 1930, in Arak, Iran. He graduated from the Academy of Drama in Iran, for which he received a Gold Medal from the Shah of Iran for his acting. "Later on, I went from acting to cinematography and had the honor of being the shah's personal cinematographer and traveled all over the country with him," he recalled in a 2009 interview with Iran Times International. He made 21 documentaries before moving to the United States, including "Flood in Khuzestan," which was selected by the Red Cross for screening internationally to generate awareness of the disastrous flooding in the Iranian province. It also earned him the Golden Ribbon of Art from the shah. "When the U.S. State Department saw the documentary, they invited me to come to the U.S. to study filmmaking," he recalled in the 2009 interview. After studying filmmaking at Syracuse University, Badiyi moved to Kansas City, Mo., to work at Calvin Co., a major industrial film production company, where he met a young director named Robert Altman. Altman, Badiyi said in the 2009 interview, became his best friend and mentor. Badiyi was assistant director on the low-budget 1957 film "The Delinquents," which marked Altman's feature film debut as a director. Badiyi was once married to actress and writer Barbara Turner and was stepfather to actress Jennifer Jason Leigh. He is survived by his third wife, Tania; his children, Mimi, Mina, Alexis and Natasha; two brothers, four sisters; and two grandchildren.
From Variety:

Badiyi began his American career as a cinematographer, working in New York, Kansas City and finally Los Angeles. He worked with directors including Robert Altman, who became a mentor and lifelong friend, and Sam Peckinpah.
He directed over 430 episodes of television and several movies beginning in 1963. By the late 1960s he was regularly directing series television, including multiple episodes of "Get Smart," "The Doris Day Show," "Mission: Impossible," "The Six Million Dollar Man," "Mannix," "Baretta," "The Rockford Files," "Hawaii Five-O," "The Incredible Hulk," "T.J. Hooker," "Cagney and Lacey," "Falcon Crest," "Jake and the Fatman," "In the Heat of the Night," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Baywatch."
" 'Mission Impossible' came about at a time where we were using images differently than before," Badiyi told Iran Times Intl. in 2009. "We would use extreme focusing and closeups in order to accurately convey to the audience the actors' feelings, thoughts and actions. It was also a time of breakthrough visual effects, so I had the opportunity to do things I hadn't done before; it was great. I let my imagination run wild."
More recently he helmed episodes of "La Femme Nikita" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
He was also credited with the title visualization for "Get Smart," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Hawaii Five-O," among several other series. It was Badiyi who devised the notion of having Moore toss her tam o'shanter into the air for the famous opening sequence of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Badiyi also directed more than 60 documentaries.
In 2006 he directed the family drama "The Way Back Home," with Julie Harris and Ruby Dee.
His last screen credit was as technical adviser on the 2008 film "Lady of the Roses," directed by Mojtaba Mirtahmasb.
Born in Arak, Iran, Reza Sayed Badiyi graduated from the Academy of Drama in Iran and received the prestigious golden medal of art from the Shah of Iran. In 1955 he was invited by the U.S. government to pursue a film career and subsequently graduated from Syracuse U. in Audiovisual Studies.
In 2010 the Iranian-American community and actors from some of the shows Badiyi directed honored him on his 80th birthday at UCLA's Royce Hall.
Badiyi was married three times, the second time to actress, writer and producer Barbara Turner. He is survived by his third wife, actress Tania Harley, and three children, including actress Mina Badie.
