But you can't be an old fire
If you are burning with a new flame
So remember that
You are never a forgotten name
Cause I know a land called
The land of the living
It's the world beyond those curtains
Where we learned to play
I hear the voices of my childhood singing
It's the world beyond those doorways
Where we use to play cause every moment
Is a chance to define what you want to become
You're not a slave to things you've done
Be brave and be bold
Be childish and old it's the same old story
Every life needs a hope of glory
Land of the living, Roo Panes

Find A Song
that finds the artist communicating with his younger self
Roo Panes - Letter to the Boy
The new track finds the British folk songwriter in a reflective mood, communicating to a younger version of himself while offering reassurance and calm:
"The song as a whole is a reflection on things you would say to the “boy” you. Explaining a few of the hurdles and then finishing with the question “now you know - will you go?” The scene is set on an idealistic ivory shore that actually came as an image to me one night. It was a dark stormy sky with a child holding a candle hopefully, sheltering the flame against the wind, and I wrote into that. It reminded me of some of the beaches in north Scotland - so it kind of kickstarted a trip we took up to the Scottish isles for writing the album.”
Opening with a plaintive fingerpicked guitar, 'Letter To The Boy' quickly sees Roo Panes’ commanding voice taking centre stage. There’s a subtle confidence to the simplicity of the arrangement; a dedication to serving the song with atmospheric flourishes that complement but never distract from the heart of everything.

She was lying in the sun
In the quiet corner where the river runs
Well, I went inside and I wrote the words
I just love you

Roo Panes: The Calm and Consistent
Recently, there have been a handful of folk artists coming out. Most popular currently are Noah Kahan, Gracie Abrams, and the supergroup boygenius. Moreover, I discovered one during the pandemic when his song was played during an emotional scene in This Is Us. The song is “My Sweet Refuge,” and the artist is Roo Panes.
Roo Panes is a British folk singer-songwriter. His debut album Little Giant…

Find A Song
about cherishing an unexpectedly beautiful moment
Roo Panes - Samalaman Bay
“Samalaman Bay was a stunning little beach that we stumbled upon while up in Scotland. It struck me for several reasons. The name had this natural rhythm and colour in it, and I was amazed by how white the sand was, and how turquoise the water was. We went for a swim there to a little island in the bay, and I remember sitting on the beach watching the storm clouds gather on the mountains in the backdrop over the “sound”. It just felt like one of those beautiful moments that arrived unintentionally, but was so appreciated. I just really wanted to write a song to mark it, a simple song that didn’t overcomplicate the scene, and expressed the almost childlike feeling we got from finding a little treasure. I also felt like there was a charming irony to this almost tropical looking beach amongst the stormy surroundings of the north sea, so I decided I wanted to write the song with a kind of calypso feel to mark that feeling.”
