I HAVE AUTISM, PERCEIVE ME /lh
HI i'm gonna talk about communication and my sensory profile and verbal stims because i'm bored and they're things i experience with my autism.
alternative communication
i used to use BSL to communicate when nonspeaking as a kid but now the people i'm around don't understand BSL i tend to use other ways to communication
gesturing and mouthing words instead of saying them aloud work too
i also like speaking in toki pona (if u haven't heard of it, it's a minimalist constructed language made by linguist sonja lang, made to be easy to learn with simple grammar and help you focus on smaller concepts as it has only 130 words! current hyperfix haha) because it helps me a lot - the words feel easier for me to process and use, and the short words (most are 2-4 letters long) are easy to say and spell out.
verbal stims
my verbal stims change frequently! i often use echolalia to stim, so i repeat phrases that i've heard before. tiktok sounds often plague me in this way lmao.
my current most frequent verbal stims are french words! 'bonjour', 'oui' and 'au revoir' are some of my favourites.
i also like making beeping, buzzing and clicking like a dolphin.
my verbal stims can be voluntary or involuntary
sensory profile for me, it depends on what sense, but i'll do a quick run down:
taste - sensory seeking (i like spice/intense flavours)
food texture - DUDE DON'T GIVE ME ANY SOFT TEXTURES PLS. i like crunchy foods. i don't like inconsistently textured foods, so i avoid fruit and vegetables bc the texture is always different! my safe foods are chicken (my favourite are tenders or nuggets) and bread (i like most types of bread, but prefer the ones with a crunchy outside)
temperature - i don't like hot things generally. i don't like hot drinks or really hot foods. i prefer cooler temperatures in my room and prefer being cold - i can't stand the heat, summer is my nemesis /srs
clothing - i like big jumpers a lot, dresses that are spinny and clothes that don't restrict my movement. things like blazers or jackets stress me out cause i can't move freely.
sight - VISUAL STIMS ONLINE ARE DOPE!!! i love kinetic sand too. i have very visceral reactions to online stimboards lmao. i don't like bright lights - the dark is wayyy better.
sound - generally sound avoidant/adverse, i don't like loud noises, and i wear my ear defenders or earphones at all times bc i can't handle noise, especially in public. i like certain sounds like woodpecker drilling but i have to be in the mood for it. music is an exception to my sound avoidance because i love it omg - i memorise song lyrics really easily, usually from one listen.
touch - depends on my mood tbh. don't touch me w/o permission or i will reflex elbow you in the stomach /lh

Auctober day 17!
Tumblr media
I don't know the specifics of my sensory profile, but I do know two things:
I've got insane hyposensitivity to weight on my body, deep pressure feels AMAZING. My weighted blanket does so much, but I also love love love being absolutely torn into shreds by massages. It also helps to squeeze my fingers or claw at my thighs if I need to stim without too much fidgeting.
I've got insane hypersensitivity to sound and vibrations. I sleep with my blanket pulled over my ears and white noise to try and deafen things around me, but even then if there is ANY bangs or vibrations ANYWHERE in the house I WILL hear it. It's a little easier to block out during the day while I'm focusing on other things, but even then I'll get overwhelmed by too many strange or loud noises.

For us autistics some of our senses may be over-sensitive while others may be under-sensitive, and some may be both at different times.
If you're under-sensitive you'll be sensory seeking, and if you're over-sensitive you'll be sensory avoiding.

Auctober Day 17: Sensory Profile
I feel like my sensory needs are just...confusing. Sound is one of my main sensitivities, though it varies depending on how overwhelmed I already am. Also I would rather listen to a song that I enjoy loudly than have a bunch of scattered, quiet noise.
Another big sensitivity of mine is movement around me. If someone is waving their hands while they talk or shifting on the couch beside me I get super irritable.
I have always been a "wears bright clashing colors" autistic so I guess I am sensory seeking when it comes to color/sight, though I hate bright sunlight and depending on how overwhelmed I am sometimes it can bother me.
It's really interesting to explore these things and learn more about how my brain works!

Day 17: Sensory Profile
I am definitely the sensory-avoidant sort of autistic... so I've given each of my senses a score out of 10 (1 = most neurodivergent, 10 = most neurotypical). I'm also going to list some of the things which frequently trigger my "nope" response, because I think it's interesting to hear about other people's problematic stimuli.
Sight: 9/10 I very rarely have a problem with anything sight related... unless it is also to do with one of my other senses (see below: socks)...
Sound: 3/10 Loud noises, no thank you. Subtitles, yes please. Polystyrene? NOPE! I have to turn the radio down to find a parking space. Same song on repeat 5000 times until it becomes dead to me and I have to find a new one? Mmmmmm how else do you listen to music? Life without unexpected sounds would be lovely, thanks.
Touch: 3/10 SOCKS. WITH. SHOES. ONLY. Socked feet must not touch each other. I don't even want to see YOUR socks touch each other. Scratchy fabrics, gtfo. Synthetics/nylon on my hands/feet? Couldn't be me. Gloves that go over my fingers? Nope nope nope.
Taste: 8/10 Mostly fine... except things with illegal mouthfeel. (This is kind of touch, I guess, but sloppy/mushy textures are just capital-R wRong.)
Smell: N/A I can't smell very well at all. I can pretty much only smell coffee, smoke and shit... and I can't always tell which one is which!
Proprioception: 8/10 As a child: Balance = 0 Coordination = less than none Handwriting = spiders-with-pens Now: Balance = I can vaguely walk but not in a straight line Coordination = play drums with my eyes closed, can juggle, etc. Handwriting = legible, after years of practice
Interoception: 6/10 We currently can't really afford to put the heating on in our house, so there are days when I have been getting super frustrated with myself for not being able to concentrate... THEN I realise that my hands hurt from being too cold. Or, alternatively, I'll get engrossed in doing-a-thing and then realise my stomach is screaming at me for food. Not the greatest at knowing what my body is doing when I'm distracted.

Auctober Day 17 - Sensory Profile
we are an autistic system. we are sensory seekers and avoiders. We are an polyfragmented system so it makes things much more complex. Some of us can't hand background noises, other alters need noise to work or go to sleep. Lots of us need visual sensory or audio input that we can control.  we can be very hypersensitive to a lot of things. we are also hyposensitive to a lot of things. everyone even in our system don't have the same sensory needs.

anyway velvet is a fun texture. im sensory seeking (mostly except for when very overwhelmed) and having textures on my skin grounds me in reality. i know lots of autistic people like velvet being stroked in one direction but not the other, I like both! one is soft one is stimmy and u can flick between the two at will!! fucking incredible. i used to draw patterns into my grandparents giant velvety wall-rug they had (probably still have) on the wall at their house. velvet cushions and clothes. sequins are cool but they are too flashy, hard and difficult to work with, from an artists pov. give me some velvet to draw a silly picture on i promise i will not disappoint

3 things: 1) i love the intensely deep posts you make about dungeon meshi, the characters, everything about it. thank you. 2) this means the wiki is immensely annoying to me because it isn't nearly as in-depth as your blog is. 3) i'm looking for visual reference of the black-haired male half-foot chilchuck is usually standing next to whenever he's at the guild. please help. is it the guy that shows up in chapter 95, with the freckles??
1) Thank you, that’s super nice to say and to hear 🥺 2) felt lol, the wiki is hm… Barebones and often off. I edited in the info about Chil being underweight because I crave everyone being painfully aware of it but otherwise fanwikis scare me I’m unlikely to touch it again— the gallery section saves my ass on the regular tho lol. As always with fandoms, community work makes the dream work!
That’s Dandan! He does even have a wiki page. He used to work in gold-stripping along with Laios and Falin, and then was a part of Laios’ party, and eventually introduced Chilchuck to the party(and the marriage seeker mage?)! He has connections alright, and he sure is in the half-foot guild. He is a very minor character so panels of him are limited… Luckily I have a buddy obsessed with him so I have them on hand, this might be literally all panels of him out there idk atp

I recommend reading the extra on Laios’ party formation if you haven’t already, and since it’s pre-canon it’s not spoilery for anime-onlies. There’s also speculation that he may be related to Chilchuck’s wife or Chilchuck himself because of the black curly hair like Fler, the freckles and his heavy lids (his design does differ from appearance to appearance lol but he does generally have noticeably deep-set eyes). Plus the panel below, which may imply he’s always been a family friend… Speculation though as I said, more on it here in the hair section if you’re interested. But if this is right then baby Dandan <3

Alright that’s it for today hope it helped, ta-ta, bweh

Analogue clocks really are the vilest of creations, not only presenting an already confusing subject, time, in a nigh incomprehensible format; but also stealing away any chance at quiet, invading the precious moments that come close to the mythical "silence" with their incessant tick tick tick SHUT UP YOU PIECE OF GARBAGE

on the topic of the agricultural ideas you've had: one of my most noticeable autism problems is that i have a very restricted diet, due to sensory issues and other brain-weirdness. i can't just "try new foods" or "eat differently." i can count on my fingers the new foods i've aquired within my living memory and i've lost some, too. i know from personal experience that some people can't just go vegetarian/vegan/to meat alternatives. so, just . . . any thoughts on anti-abelist agricultural transition messaging?
ooh. yes. lots of thoughts. comes back, like everything does with me, to user-centred design. basically, you have a sensory profile yeah? you have your foods you like to eat. company producing sustainable and nutritious meat alternatives etc compiles your profile and that of many other participants in survey. creates a product that resembles what you like to eat, maybe even making it better (?) according to your sensory needs. sends out to you and everyone else who has a sensory profile that might enjoy it. does the same for all different sensory profiles. voila, a wide and diverse and nutritious and sustainable menu!! that all the wider and more novelty seeking sensory profiles can try as well, but you have your things that you like :D
i know this is more of a collective action than individual action thing, but i've met the people who create alternative meats of many different kinds (from faux meats to cell cultured meats) and let me tell you this is EXACTLY what they do, except in a little less neurodivergent-centric way. the amount of analysis that goes into people's palate sensory preferences is INSANE. like yeah it might take a little convincing for them to use this path specifically, but it's not impossible. far from it.

Time for another instalment of "Is it normal or am I back on my autistic shit?"!!!
This is my fork. There are many like it but this one is mine. Its tines are straighter than other forks, its handle is lighter and feels better in my hand.
Seriously though does everyone have a favourite set of cutlery or is it just me?
