#Snoopy’s Home Ice

Tumblr media
You can’t keep a good dog down, Charlie Brown.
When NASA launched a mission to the moon last week, the unmanned cabin included a stuffed Snoopy in an orange flight suit.
The space beagle was among the small items that serve as “zero gravity indicators,” which visually signal that the capsule has reached “the weightlessness of microgravity.”
Turns out, the agency couldn’t have picked a better pop culture symbol:
For seven decades, Snoopy and the rest of the “Peanuts” gang have defied the forces of time, freed from the gravitational pull of trends.
The globally beloved cartoon characters still pop up daily in comic strips, books and gift shops, as well as in animated specials, both new ones and the classic holiday programs such as “A Charlie Brown Christmas” that now stream on Apple TV Plus.
“Peanuts” is in the ether as surely as the jazzy Vince Guaraldi Trio riffs that bounce along the airwaves once Christmastime is here.
Tumblr media
This year, the headquarters of Team Peanuts in Santa Rosa, California, has another reason to hold gatherings at its museum and library and ceremonies at its ice rink:
It’s the centennial of the birth of “Peanuts” creator Charles M. “Sparky” Schulz, who was born 26 November 1922 and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Schulz died in February 2000, the same weekend that his final original strip was published.
Yet what he launched into the zeitgeist in 1950 remains a cultural touchstone. On Saturday, many syndicated cartoonists will mark the centennial in their strips.
So why does “Peanuts” endure so strongly — remaining so firmly woven into the fabric of popular culture — when so many aspects of mass entertainment all but disappear?
Tumblr media
Jeannie Schulz, widow of the cartoonist and president of the Charles M. Schulz Museum’s board of directors, puts it concisely:
“Sparky tapped into a universal humanity and translated it into simple lines with a subtle humor.”
Those elegant, poignant, slyly simple lines curled and curved their way into religion and sports and war and mental health and love unrequited.
To mark the centennial, The Washington Post asked celebrities from various areas of achievement what Schulz’s creation has meant to them.
‘As good as anything ever’
Producer Lee Mendelson approached Schulz in the mid-’60s with an idea: Coca-Cola was interested in a TV project.
Out of that seed grew one of the two greatest animated Christmas shows to emerge from that decade: a classic that, like “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” melded the genius of artistic minds.
Schulz teamed with animator Bill Melendez and, working under a deadline of mere months, the three men created “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” a masterpiece that daringly led with its heart.
Charlie Brown battled seasonal depression, Snoopy engaged in flights of fancy and Linus Van Pelt delivered the biblical monologue that, out of the mouths of a babe, still moves viewers regardless of age or faith.
“Over the course of my life, I’ve probably watched ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ more times than any single episode of television,” late-night host Jimmy Kimmel says. “It’s one of the main reasons I decided to have more kids.”
Kimmel thinks that special reflects the larger excellence of what a boy from Minnesota ultimately gave to the world.
“As soon as our daughter Jane learned to read, I bought her all the ‘Peanuts’ anthologies,” the comedian says. “I bought an original drawing of Snoopy by Charles Schulz that may very well be a forgery. I cherish it even if it is.
“The best of Peanuts is as good as anything ever. For me, it’s one of the greatest achievements in American art and literature.”
Tumblr media
Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter, director of such films as “Inside Out” and “Up,” says that brilliance was firmly rooted in the comic strip, which launched in fewer than a dozen newspapers before eventually being syndicated to thousands, becoming one of the most widely read strips in the world.
“Schulz was brave enough to talk about human, adult, often non-funny things in his strip,” Docter says. “He featured kids dealing with anxiety, insecurity, jealousy, unrequited love, which gave ‘Peanuts’ a real weight and importance.”
Growing up in Minnesota himself, Docter was drawn into a world that stays with him today.
“As a kid, I was totally hooked by Snoopy and the escapist fun and humor of that character,” he says.
“But whether Schulz was conscious of it or not, it was those deeper emotional things that made me continue to read into adulthood. Those deceptively simply drawn characters have real complexity and depth."
“And besides, they’re still funny 70 years later. How many comic strips can claim that?”
Bay Area author Gene Luen Yang considers how Schulz’s comic evolved from revelation to quiet revolution.
Says Yang, author of such graphic novels as “American Born Chinese”:
“He is so influential that pretty much every strip-format comic today, whether in the newspaper or on the web, has borrowed a bit of that innovation.”
‘We stayed close’
Ever the athlete, Schulz embraced baseball, golf and hockey from a young age. He grew to love sports like tennis and these passions regularly found their way into his strip.
Before he befriended some professional athletes well into his career, though, Schulz could not have known how much he buoyed them.
“As a young skater growing up, it was always fun to see the comic strip and celebrate everything we experienced at the rink,” says figure skater Scott Hamilton, who won Olympic gold in 1984.
“To see the ‘Peanuts’ [characters] come alive on the ice made it seem like what we were doing was more than just skating. We had a place in popular culture.”
Tumblr media
Schulz relocated to Northern California in the late ’50s, but you couldn’t take the Minnesota boyhood out of the man.
In Santa Rosa, he built the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, also known as Snoopy’s Home Ice, in 1969. And there, in the early ’80s, Hamilton began working with Schulz on ice shows.
(The skater will host “Sparky’s Ice Spectacular” at the venue on Saturday to mark the centennial.)
“Sparky was very hands-on in everything he did,” Hamilton says.
“In one of the productions I did for him, he had this dream of doing a cocktail party where I got to play the host of the party.
That character was interested in a girl at the party, but she gets swept off her feet by another guest, kind of like his stories of the Little Red-Haired Girl in the comic strip. Just when it seems he lost the girl, she comes back after all the other guests had left.”
Adds Hamilton, “To see how much Sparky loved that production made it one of my all-time favorite skating memories.”
Schulz also became a strong supporter of equality in sports, which included joining the board of trustees of the Women’s Sports Foundation, founded in 1974 by tennis icon and civil rights activist Billie Jean King, to “advance the lives of women and girls through sports and physical activity.”
Schulz would not only draw Snoopy serving aces. He would also reference his friend King.
“Sparky was actually very shy, and his comic strips were a great source of inspiration and comfort for me, especially as I traveled the world during my tennis career,” King says.
“I knew if he added my name to a ‘Peanuts’ strip, he was checking in on me and wanted to have a chat.
“We stayed close until he passed, and I will always cherish that.”
’A perfect pairing’
Mendelson, who died in 2019, believed in creative serendipity. He once told The Post that the first time he heard the music of Vince Guaraldi — while driving across the Golden Gate Bridge — he thought he might use it someday.
Singer-songwriter Ben Folds views Guaraldi’s music as inseparable from the classic “Peanuts” animation it accompanied.
“When you match the music with ‘Peanuts’ and the era and what it was doing and saying, then it starts to hit like Beethoven Piano Sonata time,” Folds says of Guaraldi’s sunny West Coast sound that “distilled jazz into something popular.”
Guaraldi’s “Peanuts” songs and the animated specials were “a perfect pairing,” he says, adding that the music “just gets the vibe.”
That “loomed large” when Folds was asked to write theme music for the recent streaming Peanuts special, “It’s the Small Things, Charlie Brown.”
He meditated on Guaraldi’s music rather than trying to imitate it: “I didn’t try to drop riffs. I just went with the color.”
Tumblr media
‘Pursue their dream’
This month, “Jump Start” creator Robb Armstrong appeared on a Schulz Museum panel with other celebrated cartoonists to share personal stories about the Sparky they knew.
As he sat onstage, Armstrong appreciated that Schulz “made other budding artists either realize their dream, pursue their dream or smooth the road on their journey.”
“He was one of the most grand-hearted human beings I’ve ever encountered,” Armstrong says.
A 6-year-old Armstrong was inspired by “Peanuts” in the summer of 1968, when Schulz integrated the strip by introducing a Black character: Franklin.
Armstrong’s reaction: “I’m in this strip.”
(About a quarter-century later, Schulz gave Franklin the last name of “Armstrong” in a salute to his friend and syndicated colleague, an honor the “Jump Start” creator calls “otherworldly.”)
Barbara Brandon-Croft, the trailblazing creator of the comic “Where I’m Coming From,” also responded strongly in 1968.
“I was excited to see a Black character in ‘Peanuts.’ Even if Franklin’s presence was only that — a Black kid amongst the group — it absolutely made a difference,” she says."
“When you grow up as an ‘other,’ which is what this country laid out for us, when you see yourself represented, it gives you a sense of belonging.”
Tumblr media
‘The cool astronaut’
Schulz, a World War II Army veteran, was long fascinated with aviation.
NASA and “Peanuts” have a long relationship that includes the Silver Snoopy Award, which is bestowed upon outstanding NASA contractors and employees.
In 1969, Schulz appeared in public alongside the Apollo 10 astronauts who rode in the module called “Charlie Brown.”
That was also the year that a future astronaut was inspired by Snoopy and space.
“In 1969, the Mets won the World Series, [astronauts] landed on the moon and I went to see ‘A Boy Named Charlie Brown,’ the new animated feature, at Radio City Music Hall, says Mike Massimino, an engineering professor and space adviser.
“It all happened within a few months of each other, and it kind of set up the passions for the rest of my life.”
Tumblr media
That year, Massimino received a stuffed Snoopy astronaut toy as a gift.
In 2009, on his second NASA space mission, Massimino took that same Snoopy toy into space, a symbol of his lasting attachment to “Peanuts.”
Noting that his attempts to become an astronaut failed three times before he was accepted, Massimino says he admires Charlie Brown’s spirit of optimistic resilience.
“Charlie Brown is the friend and person I wanted to be, and Snoopy is the cool astronaut I wanted to be,” Massimino says.
Adds the astronaut, “I think it’s the greatest comic strip and characters ever created.”

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Group one
You guys seem to be respected by spirits or at least the ones that have the dignity to show the right beings respect. It seems like you guys are closed off to a lot of spiritual activity especially low vibing.you guys might subconsciously or even consciously somehow help spirits in conflict perhaps humans using advice from spirit.it seems like you guys aren't aware of what activity does take place surrounding you because you're used to it and it just seems normal. It might be more in the daytime too. I do see you guys helping lower vibing situations spirits and or people somehow someway. Something about snoopy and something about awareness. Maybe also something about ice cream.
Group two
You guys might be or have a history of fighting against lower vibing entities at night. Like most likely not that bad just random ghosts and stuff. This seems like it could manifest in tons of ways but I'm seeing for some it could be insomnia or general stress with seemingly no source. You guys might want some type of pretty lights and all around make your rooms and or homes a good vibe especially at night. I'm seeing some of you need sage or something to burn. The brighter you glow the less the negative stuff will show up and be around. I'm getting something about something in the background.
It might be a good idea to focus on your subconscious mind maybe you need background noise or decorations or lights in order to help your subconscious.
Group three
Looks like there are spirits helping you and trying to take part in controlling certain situations going on in the 3d plane of existence. Earth. Whatever you want to refer to it as ok.i see someone smiling so maybe that's significant somehow.im seeing you guys being sort of lifted up or protected somehow by an or multiple entities. I see this entity or the multiple of them view you as a child I want to say kind of like how cats do. To be honest I am getting something about aliens. I'm seeing some spirit or spirits or somebody like that trying to offer you something positive specifically when you're upset in some way so my advice is if you will just sit or lay back close your eyes and let your imagination take you wherever ok.
Group four
Ngl I'm getting something about a morgue. I'm seeing an elder and a youth that are related somehow or just similar. I also see kind of a dickish peer coming to try to take over or something. If you somehow know what I'm talking about then spirit is just confirming that they see this and they're acting accordingly. I keep getting a reference to the dynamic of ash and the kid Gary I think and professor oak. This could somehow be referencing the importance of perspective.
If you feel vulnerable or lonely somehow you should rely on spirit at this time. Is this group scared of ghosts btw? Like I used to be scared of ghosts but still was interested type of thing haha. Some are good some are bad, like people. You definitely have some good ones by your side. So no worries. You just have to have faith in them and lean on the good ones. Something about a pig like a pet pig for someone or some of you. Something about a statue of a woman figure for somebody. This could even actually be the statue of liberty or a lady with a torch similarly. Or a bell maybe. You guys need to learn to reject the negative entities then it won't be so scary ok.

On Directionality of Movement in BNHA (and the Neat Reversals)
(Take 2 on this post, which gave me fits trying to post it. Fingers crossed it works this time, and sorry for any vanishing posts, people who reblogged the original.)
This post was initially conceived back in December, when I first saw the home release covers for HeroAca’s Season 6.  They look like pretty standard stuff at first glance, but there was something about them that was very, very interesting: the direction the characters were moving.
(Hit the jump for an explanation spiced up with lots and lots of images from first American and then Japanese media.)
So, this is something that’s absolutely ubiquitous in visual media that a reader/viewer is probably never going to consciously register (at least without being told about it, as in, for example, film class or art school) because the emotional cues in play are intrinsically tied to a culture’s written language.[1]  To wit, because written English progresses from the left to the right, the subconscious association with rightward movement is forward progress.  Thus, in American media, be it stage, screen, or graphic panel when a character is moving from the left to the right, that directionality expresses forward movement, progress, agency, empowerment, righteousness, clear-mindedness, healthy ambition, heroism, and so forth.  Progress is towards the unturned page.
[1] The broader term to use to research this further is “linguistic relativity.”
Tumblr media
The chase Furiosa initiates in Mad Max Fury Road spends most of the movie heading to the right, before Max convinces Furiosa to return to the Citadel, at which point, naturally enough, the chase reverses directions, spending the rest of the film heading left.
Tumblr media
Heroically smashing up cars in a rightward-facing direction, while people with less agency flee leftward.
Tumblr media
Elsa spends most of this number moving to the left, the same direction she fled out of Arendelle, but as her resolve grows, the choreography stars reversing, moving her on the z-axis more, and when she declares her resolve to never go back, donning her ice queen dress, her directionality immediately shifts to right-facing.  Even her turn at the end of the sequence, as she spins to walk back inside, is to the audience’s right.
Conversely, when a character is moving from the right to the left—against the flow of written English—that expresses return, backsliding, a lack of agency, powerlessness, wickedness, unhealthy ambition, difficulty, turmoil, and a generally dark or conflicted mentality.  Regression and turmoil lie in the direction of the page that’s already been turned.
Tumblr media
Nina’s grasp on reality is beginning to fracture due to the multifaceted stresses she’s facing.
Tumblr media
Jean Grey is classically a heroic character, but you don’t get hero layouts when you’re giving in to dark urges and consuming suns.
Tumblr media
Scar will start trending rightward when Be Prepared really gets underway, that song being all about his future plans and proactive evil, but for the introductory bits, he’s firmly left-facing—as is also the case when he hurls Mufasa to his death.
Of course, this doesn’t have to be a huge production!  Even something as simple as Charlie Brown walking rightward out to the doghouse to feed Snoopy then leftward to go back inside fits this idea of forward vs. backward motion.  (Compare this to, say, Dagwood, who runs leftward out his door to crash into the mailman every time he’s late for work.)
Naturally, you see this idea of directionality in confrontations as well.
Tumblr media
In Hamilton, the title character is reflecting back on his past, the loved ones lost, his actions and the sort of legacy he will leave behind; he "throws away his shot" and dies.  Burr, conversely, is thinking of his living daughter, of his determination to survive; he fires, bullet moving from left to right, and will go on to survive the duel.
Tumblr media
Steven Q. Universe, facing the future despite the embodied wall of stasis and indifference standing in his way.
Tumblr media
The Wicked Witch, facing leftward, attempts to scare the Tin Woodsman and Scarecrow from progressing any further with Dorothy towards her destination, which they would do by following the yellow brick road extending rightward off the screen.
Tumblr media
You can see the reverse positioning—hero facing left, villain facing right—in cases like this, where the hero is making a dramatic defense against a villain in an attempt to stop their progression.
This isn’t a hard and fast rule, obviously—visual dynamism alone will mean characters move around and change position!  It also doesn’t address movement on the y- and z-axes, nor does it necessarily account for e.g. mixed group compositions or romance scenes.  Also, more intangible things like power dynamics, command of the scene, and shifting character motivations can change who’s moving/facing what direction.  It’s not as basic as good-right, bad-left.  Nonetheless, it’s an interesting thing to watch for.
However, all of the above is reversed in Japanese media.  Written Japanese moves from the right to the left,[2] and therefore the mental association with forward progress/positivity versus regression/negativity is likewise with leftward versus rightward movement.  Following are some obvious examples from works other than BNHA (no live action films because I don’t have the familiarity to be comfortable picking individual shots from them):
[2] In its normal vertical orientation, which is what you’ll find in books and manga.  When arranged horizontally, as in scrolling marquees or banners or the like, usually it reads left-to-right, though this was not the case historically.
Tumblr media
Anthy leaves her allegorical coffin, Ohtori Academy, in the final episode of Revolutionary Girl Utena.
Tumblr media
A twist on Sena’s signature move, the Devil Bat Ghost, in Eyeshield 21.  Check any sports manga you read and I would bet you good money that the protagonist team’s goal is on the left in most instances.
Tumblr media
Mima, pictured here Really Going Through It.  Note that Perfect Blue is the inspiration (to say the least) for Black Swan, above, but the psychological break is facing the other direction.
Tumblr media
Cure Dream shows us the mixed feelings of being the leader of the last PreCure team that regularly killed their enemies.
So, that all laid out, let’s talk about how that looks in BNHA!
Like my other examples, the series is chock-full of examples, both of the usual forward-leftward, regression-rightward directionality, as well as a number of interesting plays against type.  Below, have a pile of examples!
Tumblr media
BNHA, manga and anime both, gets piles of face-off shots like this, and in every one of them that I’ve seen, it’s the same general layout: heroes moving leftward, villains rightward.
Tumblr media
Deku attacks towards the turning page, while Muscular attacks against it.  Tokoyami, mired in turmoil and a dangerous loss of control over his power, also faces rightward.
Tumblr media
The specter of the past and the emblem of the future facing in the expected directions.
Tumblr media
Here’s a telling group composition: the Stoplight trio working hard for their futures, ditto the man who moves too fast, while Endeavor and Fuyumi face forward, still somewhat unsure of their current situation, while Natsuo is actively going against the flow.
Of course, it holds in the single character images as well, like so:
Tumblr media
Likewise, you can see the contrast even between images, like these two, announcing the anime adaptation of the Joint Training Arc and My Villain Academia, respectively:
Tumblr media
Notice Shinsou, who's a major character in the arc but not quite a Hero Course classmate just yet, has his face turned away, back in the rightward direction.
You can see it more generally in the action itself, as well, not just the promo art.  Think of moments like Shigaraki emerging from the warp at USJ, the race during the Sports Festival, the direction of All Might’s final punch—as well as Shouto’s later victory over Dabi—at Kamino, the direction Gentle Criminal (and thus Deku following him) is heading when trying to reach UA, and so forth.
And then there are the interesting subversions.
Tumblr media
Usually, in the days of their most pitched rivalry, the forward-moving Deku is moving left, while the tumultuous, stuck in the past Bakugou is moving right, but he drifts more leftward-facing as he gradually begins to get his head on straight, as in their fight post-Kamino.
Tumblr media
Shigaraki would be on the left if he were facing down Deku, but against All Might?  Not so much.  That makes this less a good versus evil stare-down and more a past versus future one.
This incredibly fucking telling composition, which I’ll let speak for itself:
Tumblr media
Shigaraki, having the protagonist slot on loan for the duration of My Villain Academia, spends most of the Deika fight facing in the direction of the future, though Re-Destro interrupts this to take the left-facing when he’s challenging Shigaraki about having no vision.  Shigaraki’s pseudo-apotheosis has his facing right as he destroys everything around him (Re-Destro facing left as he sees his future rewritten and his burden removed), but by the time we come to the aftermath in the crater, Shigaraki is moving forward again.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, that does not necessarily follow for the rest of the League!  Dabi and Geten trade off facings through the whole arc, while Toga is mostly rightward facing against Curious, only getting the leftward advancement at the very tail end, once she transforms into Uraraka.  Twice’s doubles are often fairly leftward-aimed, as they’re driving the action forward, but Jin himself spends his big confrontation mostly facing outward, towards the reader, only getting much leftward-facing when he’s helping the unconscious Toga afterward.  Mr. Compress, not having a dedicated match-up, is all over the place.
Spinner, though?  Spinner is following Shigaraki both literally and in the sense that he spends the arc coming into his own.  Thus, even when Shigaraki’s gotten ahead of him, Spinner maintains the leftward aim.
Tumblr media
This can get more complicated than simple inversion, too!
For example,  Gigantomachia is leftward moving in, really, virtually every scene he’s in.  It really adds to how much he feels like a complete force of nature that, all throughout his earliest introduction, Kirishima’s flashback, MVA, and both war arcs, there are literally two (2) sequences in which he’s anything other than leftward-oriented for the bulk of his appearances, and both of them occur when he’s significantly struggling to make forward progress.
The first comes  when he’s trying to leave the Gunga Villa and facing steep resistance; this conveniently lets the kids  facing him (+Mount Lady, when she can get out ahead of him) heroically face left, like they usually do.  Once Machia clears the Villa battleground, however, the rest of his route to Jakku is smooth, even sailing, and shows him returned to his usual leftward orientation.
The second is once he’s actually reached Jakku and the sedative has started kicking in.  While he still gets a good number of leftward orientations, he’s tied down in a lot of them, and they’re mixed with more rightward and a considerable number of outward facings.
And that’s it, really.  Even escaping from the holding facility built around him and confronting AFO, he gets leftward facing, with that only reversing in the moment AFO strikes him down.
Unlike Machia, Deku facing stiff opposition gets to keep a leftward progression when he comes up against heroic opposition in his fight against his classmates.
Shigaraki and Overhaul, appropriately for their vying for control of the villainous future,  are constantly vying for the leftward facing position in their scenes/art spreads.
And then there’s the example that prompted this whole post—the home release covers of Season 6:
Tumblr media
In other circumstances, I might chalk this up to the heroes being in the defending position—like Gandalf against the Balrog—but BNHA has not tended to do much with that visual; the heroes usually get to keep their heroic leftward facing even when they’re on the defense, as indeed is the case for all of Jakku that comes to mind!  Yet just this once, for the anime art, we can see the futility the heroes are up against, trying to stop, as Dabi so aptly put it, the future coming down the pipeline, where all the heroes’ lip service will be blown away by chaos.
Thanks for reading through this, all, and my apologies if I mixed up my right and my left anywhere! I hope you enjoyed the pictures, and that you have fun spotting the patterns in your future media intake!

A bit of a weird question, but I might be moving out of my home state to minnesota, specifically minneapolis, because being trans down here is rather rough. Do you have any advice for living in the state? Cool hidden spots? What to do for a person who's never experienced a snowy winter?
Alrighty, a few things I can mention - some of it is secondhand so don't take my word for it, but it'll be helpful. -Trans healthcare (and quality of healthcare) is pretty good in the state in my experience. You SHOULD be able to find the resources you need, though bear in mind while quality is good, price is no different - shit's still expensive everywhere because health care is itself expensive, but any other Minnesotans here feel free to reblog or chime in the replies with anything particularly useful or helpful. -Alrighty, your winter experiences will be slightly different depending on if you're living in the suburbs or the city itself. In an apartment in the city? You're probably fine - I'm assuming relying on public transportation, of which there are several options like the buses or light rail, though I know people from other cities who come to Minnesota say our public transport is lacking compared to other major cities. What I can say is that with the winter, unless it's a REALLY bad storm or the temperature drops to dangerous levels (we're talking degrees below zero), everything should still be open and running. -If you have your own car, during the winter keep weighted things in it - a cement block, bags of sand/salt, etc. Increased weight helps keep you from slipping. It's not perfect but it helps. Consequently, if you lose control on the ice, turn INTO the skid and pump the brakes - don't just press it flat, repeatedly pump the brakes to regain control. -If you have a house and a front walk/driveway, SHOVEL AND SALT. Overhangs on houses drip water when the temperature is right for melting, but the temperature will usually drop and freeze. Salt that area to either prevent it from freezing or make it easier to chop through with an ice chipper. Shoveling is just necessary depending on the severity of the snow (usually anything more than an inch or two should be shoveled) both for safety and because mail carriers will not deliver if you don't. -This year we had a reeeaally bad winter. Multiple heavy snowstorms that required going out to shovel multiple times during the day. Get warm clothes, wear layers - especially until you're used to it. However, most years it's fine. Light snowfall during winter, covers everything, maybe one bad storm but most of the time tolerable. -As for stuff to do - TONS! Minnesota has a thriving community of nerds, artists, performers, and just talented people in general. We have two major zoos - one of them paid, one free (Como Zoo), multiple parks and indeed Land of 10,000 Lakes so lots of lake beaches to enjoy swimming or fishing if that's your thing. The Science Museum remains one of the coolest places to learn stuff on various science topics even into adulthood. Conventions are relatively plentiful, though as a warning some cons are for-profit and have some... questionable leadership, look into them before deciding to go - particularly on the anime con front, but we have sci-fi/fantasy cons aplenty, too. The Mall of America is a big, big place with tons of fun stores and whatnot, including the former Camp Snoopy (currently Nickelodeon Universe). The Walker Art Center has an amazing statue garden, including the iconic Cherry and Spoon fountain. There's also the amusement park Valley Fair, which during Halloween becomes Valley Scare with spooky attractions in the neighboring area that's used for the annual Renaissance Festival. -Minnesota is a fairly large state. Not Texas big, but since it's mostly plains and hills, a lot of it is spread out and getting from one city to another usually requires going on freeways (we're also weird because we have left exits on some parts of freeways). If you don't have your own vehicle, you may want to consider getting one just to get to farther places. That's all I've got off the top of my head! Good luck with your move and remember: we only have two seasons here - Winter and Road Construction.

After the events of season 1. Harley Quinn found you on the streets of Arkham trying to scrounge up as much food and water as you could. She at first payed no mind to it thinking you were just another average person that got fucked over from everything Joker did but when she examined you more she saw the red pacifier in your backpack pocket.
Harley offered to take her in and be her temporary caregiver and let the girl come with her to get a nice meal and a place to stay. The little just craving a mother figure and to be out of the scary streets accepted her offer without a second thought. Everyone seemed to love their new addition and promised to protect her. Harley didn't even have to tell everyone she was a little because Psycho (Being the snoopy bitch he is) read her mind and picked up on things like.
'𝐼 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑠 𝑚𝑎𝑚𝑎 𝐻𝑎𝑟𝑙𝑒𝑦 𝑠𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑚𝑢𝑐ℎ'
'𝑀𝑎𝑚𝑎 𝑠𝑎𝑖𝑑 𝑠ℎ𝑒'𝑑 𝑔𝑒𝑦 𝑚𝑦 𝑠𝑖𝑝𝑝𝑦 𝑠𝑜𝑜𝑛 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑤𝑒 𝑔𝑜𝑡𝑡𝑎 𝑤𝑎𝑖𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑔𝑜 𝑛𝑖 𝑛𝑖'
Psycho told everyone before Harley and Y/n could which made the clown queen of crime mad but it didn't last long as she saw everyone was doing a part in taking care of her now. Clay face did cute puppet shows for you, king shark pirated any movie/show from the internet you wanted, and Psycho let you watch TV with him.
So that's how it all started. Now THIS is where it's at now.
"MAMA!"
You banged on the bars to the cell hoping and praying your mama would come and save you. Big you knew that she couldn't due to being trapped in a block of ice. Little you still believed she would come. How wrong you were. Two face and Penguin thought it was amusing and even pretened that they were getting beat by Harley to see the tears form on your eyes when you saw Harley wasn't there to save you.
Freeze and Bane felt bad for you though. They both knew what age regression was and figured out very quickly you were a regressor by how you couldn't form proper sentences and sucked your thumb when you slept on the dirty mattress in the corner of the cell. You were just a scared baby that missed her mama and that broke their dark hearts.
After Two Face scared you awake and left you crying in the corner, Freeze came in shortly after with a stuffed red bear and a black pacifier. You looked at the villian in confusion curious as to why he was helping you especially with your little space. He opened your cell and sat on the ground in front of you and set the little items down waiting for you to feel comfortable enough to take them.
After 10 minutes you cautiously picker up the bear and put the paci in your mouth. Y/n crawled forward giving the cold man a big hug.
"You're welcome little one. I'll tell those cretins to leave you alone or they'll be dire consequences"
The rest of the month you were there Mr Freeze he took care of you when two face and Penguin left. Mr Freeze was getting more sick of his "companions" every time they bullied you and one day he had enough. So when Penguin took Ice Block Harley to his club Mr Freeze swiped the key from his desk and let you free.
"I'll escort you home little one" Freeze smiled and opened the door to your cell. Your eyes shined so bright like you've been waiting centuries to be free. Freeze picked you up and grabbed the couple little items you hid under the worn out pillow you slept on. He layed you in the backseat of his car and gave you your paci to suck on and your stuffy to cuddle with. 30 minutes later he pulled up to the "abandoned" dirty mall. He wished you didn't have to live in these conditions but you were happy and protected so he didn't protest. You fell asleep halfway there so Freeze had to carry you inside where he saw Harley freaking out while the crew and Ivy tried calming her down.
"WHY ARE WE STILL SITTING AROUND WE NEED TO FIND MY BABY BEFORE THEY DO SOMETHING TERRIBLE TO HER WHAT IF THEY ALREADY DID?!" Harley was so scared for you. If they hurt you she'd never be able to forgive herself.
All of them turned their heads to see Freeze standing in the entrance you sleeping peacefully on his shoulder. Harley was about to shout but Freeze put a finger over his lips signals for her to be quiet him not wanting her to wake you.
Freeze layed you on the couch and covered you with a nearby blanket. "Why are you helping her?? Weren't you the one who froze me in A BLOCK OF-"
She stopped when she saw you whining and stirring in your sleep. Freeze sighed. "I never wanted to hurt her neither did Bane. I knew almost instantly she was a little and that I needed to protect her. I'm sorry for everything Ms Quinn"
"Well since you brought her back and protected her i guess I'll forgive you for turning me into a damn popsicle. But don't think we're friends"
After about 20 minutes your eyes began to flutter open. Rubbing your eyes sleepily and doing a soft yawn alerted your Mama who was discussing her plans to take revenge on the assholes who took you and take over Gotham.
"How're you feeling puddin?" Harley asked as she held you.
"M-mama" the stress over these past months caused you to break down into tears. Harley hugged you close and rubbed soft circles on your back. You wanted to tell her all the things they did to you and how much you missed her but you were too small to hardly even speak her name.
"𝑳𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒇𝒇 𝒊𝒔𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒏𝒆𝒂𝒕?
𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅𝒏𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒎𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔
𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒆? 𝑾𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅𝒏𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌
𝒊𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒊𝒓𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒊𝒓𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒔
𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈"
Harley sung one of your favorite Disney princess songs hoping to calm you down. The more she sang the more your cries died down until you were looking up at her with tear stained eyes smiling softly. Harley was surprisingly a decent singer when she sung for her baby.
"See baby there's nothing to cry over. You're home with mama, aunty Ivy, your uncles, and Psycho"
"Fuck you Harley"
A small giggle left your lips knowing she was right. They all loved and cared about you so much. Especially your mentally unstable mama.

Western Animated Movie Sequel Timeline
For reference... On how few theatrical animated movie sequels were made in the West vs. how many have been made since the early 2000s... (Streaming titles like THE SEA BEAST 2 will be included, because these are big budget enough to have been theatrical releases.)
Titles highlighted in blue have commas in them, this denotes that you're not looking at two separate titles. (Just in case you happen to not know-)
I also won't include reboots. For example: The upcoming Paramount Animation film TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM, which despite being a TMNT movie, it has no other relation to the Imagi Studios 2007 TMNT movie. The same goes for the two SMURFS reboots, 2017's THE LOST VILLAGE and Paramount's untitled upcoming musical.
I'll also leave out animated movies that are part of franchises that are largely live-action, like STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS.
1972: SNOOPY, COME HOME
1974: THE NINE LIVES OF FRITZ THE CAT
1976: RACE FOR YOUR LIFE, CHARLIE BROWN
1980: BON VOYAGE, CHARLIE BROWN (AND DON'T COME BACK!!)
1986: THE CARE BEARS MOVIE II: THE NEXT GENERATION
1987: THE CARE BEARS IN WONDERLAND
1990: THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER
1991: AN AMERICAN TAIL: FIEVEL GOES WEST
1996: ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN 2
1997: THE SWAN PRINCESS II: ESCAPE FROM CASTLE MOUNTAIN
1999: TOY STORY 2, FANTASIA 2000
2000: THE TIGGER MOVIE, RUGRATS IN PARIS: THE MOVIE
2002: RETURN TO NEVER LAND
2003: PIGLET'S BIG MOVIE, THE JUNGLE BOOK 2, LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION
2004: SHREK 2

Christmas in July
It's July 1st here which means I get to fully indulge on my love for all things Christmas by making my own Thunderbirds Christmas in July writing collection! I hope this helps to cool everyone a bit during this scorching summer :)
Our first snapshot is Christmas Time Is Here!
TW: they do drink alcohol and get a little tipsy in this one.
Link to AO3
Tumblr media
“Have you found it yet?”
John purses his lips. That’s a no then.
Gordon glances to the holoprojector where the screen should be playing A Charlie Brown Christmas but instead is showing an error screen. He claims the seat next to Dad with Alan on the other side. Alan stretches his legs out, brushing the coffee table and almost kicking Kayo’s mulled cider off the edge. She makes death eyes at Alan who just laughs it off.
Ever since turning 20, the Sprout’s gone and found himself another eight inches of height. He’s even with Scott and taking up John’s trick of spending enough time in 0 G to add an inch on top. Gordon’s not jealous or anything. Nope!
“Hey Squid,” Scott says. He taps Gordon’s shoulder with a warm glass.
“You think you made enough?” Gordon asks. There’s only an entire counter full of hot toddy’s waiting on the counter back in the kitchen that Gordon can see. Did Scott forget there’s only the seven of them tonight? Either way, Gordon takes one of the hot toddy’s from Scott with glee. Jeff chuckles next to him and takes his own. Scott gestures to the other half of the room. “Pass ’em ‘round.”
Gordon raises an eyebrow at Scott’s slurring. Someone enjoyed making the drinks. All alone. In the kitchen. With a bottle of whiskey.
But his eldest brother has got a dopey smile on his face and a steady enough hand handing out the cocktails. No one calls him on it. Scott makes a second run to bring the other glasses out before settling on the far side couch with Virgil. John sacks his head down on the center coffee table.
“EOS, bring up all sites that have A Charlie Brown Christmas available to stream.”
Her icon pops up from John’s portrait. “All of them John? I must warn you that quite a few are virus ridden. And those pop-ups are not family friendly.”
“Yeah, yeah. Just find us one that’s not too bad so we can just watch this thing. I can’t find any of the old digital copies we have. They must have gotten corrupted a while ago.”
EOS’s lights twinkle around in her circle lens as she finds a suitable version. “Well, it’s not me going to jail for pirating…”
A jazzy piano starts as the cartoon finally plays. The gang is ice skating as Snoopy causes mild mayhem- a scene as familiar as the back of Gordon’s hand.
Gordon leans back on the couch, resting his head on his dad’s shoulder. Like dominoes, Alan finds himself comfortable on Gordon’s shoulder and John leaning onto Alan’s outstretched legs from the ground. Kayo, Scott , and Virgil are one big tangle of blankets on the other side of the holoprojector. Gordon falls into the lull of warmth- a bit from the booze, a bit from the chatter of his family. Even if that family is Virgil endlessly praising the musical composers of the episode.
Jeff’s been back home for over two years, going on a third. But that leaves another six to make up for. They never watched anything Charlie Brown during those years. Virgil tried with Gordon, one Thanksgiving, but it left a bitter taste in their mouths. A Charlie Brown Christmas was an absolute no-go. It’s their Dad’s favorite Christmas special. It never felt so special without him.
“I never thought I would get to see this again, you know.”
“Hmm?”
Gordon sleepily looks up to his dad as Charlie Brown makes his way with trusty Linus to find a Christmas tree for the play. The second hot toddy is hitting pretty hard now.
“I tried my best to keep track of time out on that asteroid. Each time I thought it was Christmas, I would try to celebrate somehow.” He nods towards the cartoon. “I would recite all the lines to myself, just like we used to as a family. Maybe sketch some of the characters that would end up looking nothing like they were supposed to, but I suppose that was half the fun,” Jeff continues. Gordon turns his attention back to the screen.
“Just like we used to?”
Jeff chuckles. “It was Scott’s idea. He liked being Lucy. Named after Mom and he got to be obnoxious to everyone with a reason. She always got a kick out of it. John would always insist on playing Snoopy so he didn’t have to talk. We convinced him to be a very accurate Charlie Brown instead.”
“Huh… I don’t think I remember that.”
Gordon wrinkles his forehead in thought. There’s plenty he remembers about their childhood- both with and without Mom- but this isn’t one of those things. It hurts in a disconnected far-off sort of way. “Who was I?”
“Linus. But you had that octopus with the stretched-out arms instead of a blanket.”
The aquanaut thinks he remembers that stuffed animal. Maybe it’s still tucked away somewhere in the old farmhouse. “And Alan?”
“Sally. The ever-endearing little sibling that does nothing but get away with things that should earn them a pounding,” Jeff jokes.
That’s an understatement. Gordon sips at his hot toddy. “How much did you remember?”
“I could recite it almost line for line.”
“Dang… Just how many times have you seen this?”
Jeff thinks. His eyes flicker to the right in that way Gordon remembers them always doing when his dad does mental math. “Probably at least one hundred. I’m guessing about one hundred and fifteen. Grandma and Grandpa had us watching this once a year since Uncle Michael, so I was born into the tradition you could say. That leaves fifty some- which comes from guessing I’ve seen this as a rerun about two dozen times and Virgil and Al playing it once a week some years.”
“No wonder.”
Jeff clinks his glass with Gordon’s empty. “No wonder.”

2 & 18!! ^_^
2. My feel good movie!
This might be cheating because I’ve never technically watched the movie… but definitely The Mummy (1999)
(I listen to a podcast that explains the plot of movies, and that episode is my favourite :D)
18. Do I still love stuffed animals!
Absolutely yes! I love them all so much!
Tumblr media
Behold the 5 I managed to bring with me when I left home (abruptly)! My babies I love them <3
(Also featuring Three’s jacket in the background :D)
From left to right:
Snoopy, he’s a blue dog and he’s very floppy I love him very much
Rainbow, a very flat platypus that my cousin made me, he is blue and yellow
Wilbur, the newest of these five I got him in grade 9 I think when I went on a ski trip to Quebec! He is a pig :D
Angelina, my first webkinz that I ever got! She’s an ice dragon and I like her so much!
Shimmer: second webkinz I ever got, she’s a rabbit and also barely in the picture lmao. She has little colourful patches with glitter on her, she’s a good rabbit <3
I have so many more of them but I couldn’t bring them all with me 😔, definitely planning to go get the rest of them at some point though :D
