Every first born will say the same thing. Expectation sits squarely on your shoulders. Born the future head of the Davis family, Cordelia Davis was to all who knew her, the perfect pure-blood daughter. The Davis family were an old pure-blood wizarding family from Kerry in Ireland who came over in the 1920s to set up Moribund’s an exclusive members only club, with a strict wealthy, pure-blood and anti-blood traitor policy. Interwoven with the usual lessons taught to children like Cordelia, were things like how to manage a business and extensive background on the wizarding families in Britain, including who were paying members of Moribund’s and which of their children would be in her academic year. Groomed to one day take over Moribund’s, Cordelia never had a moment to consider if she might want to choose another life other than the one that was being set out for her. Her siblings were not subject to the same level of conditioning as Cordelia, though her younger brother AJAX DAVIS [brother] was forced to sit in on some of her lessons. 

Their family had clear idas. Cordelia would run the business and her brother to marry into The Twenty-Eight and further strengthen the Davis line. Her youngest sibling ROSALINE DAVIS [sister] was their loose cannon, too difficult for her parents to wrangle when there was no need to do so. The Davis family weren’t in the Sacred Twenty-Eight, but Moribund’s made them just as good as. Sorted into Slytherin, she was fortunate enough to be in the same year group and house as LUCIUS MALFOY [former close friend], DECIUS FLINT [former partner/former close friend], EVAN ROSIER [former close friend] and ALFHILD ROWLE [former close friend] who were all paying pure-blood members of Moribund’s. Cordelia was a good fit for their group of friends, as was EMMA VANITY [former best friend] and INES MORENO [former best friend], whose families also paid their hefty club fees. Cordelia quickly rose in ranks at school, she looked exquisite in a ballgown and could take your money at poker. 

She didn’t have any friends who were even half-bloods, let alone muggle-borns and believed wholeheartedly that she was born into a position of power because as a result of good breeding. It was this way of thinking that landed her on the arm of Decius Flint. A very respectable member of the Twenty-Eight. Cordelia doted on him and loved him with all her heart and soul. It wasn’t just his title or family line that she was interested in, Decius longed to give her exactly what she wanted, a happy life filled with marriage and children who would one day inherit Moribund’s. Graduating a slug club member, a prefect, head girl and with a boyfriend most parents longed to secure for their own child, Cordelia was the envy of every debutant the year she came out. She sparkled amongst them and smirked privately as she read her name in the scandal sheets and considered how far she’d managed to advance her family reputation even in such a short while. Had the killings not began in London, Cordelia might have achieved the gilded life she’d always dreamed of. 

The day BOOKER BAGNOLD [person of interest] fell to his death in the fountain, she was only a few feet away. But that wasn’t the end of it. Although Cordelia wanted to assume the role as wife and mother in her later years, her younger years would be spent with a hands-on approach at Moribund’s, training the ideal staff and knowing the business inside and out before she let it run itself. Missing persons posters plastered the alleyway, with bodies found not too far from the club. The world had begun to make Cordelia feel nervous. Knowing this, Ines traded in her late night favourite spot at The Grave Affair to drink with Cordelia and keep her company. She loved her for it and although they had often sparred for popularity points in the past, in adulthood Ines was her very best friend. Her loss was of great pain to Cordelia. Just outside the club, Cordelia tried to stop the bleeding, holding on to Ines’ neck which now had giant claw marks running down it. Ines died in her arms that night and Cordelia’s life changed. 

Once a sociable witch, Cordelia became a prisoner inside the Flint family home. Her relationship with Decius came to an end when he told her he’d been sleeping with ANASTASIA SIMINOVA [adversary], blaming her disinterest in him and her lack of understanding for the reason. Home in her childhood bed, Cordelia considered how meaningless it all was. She’d spent her entire life working towards something that would never happen. Her relationship or her best friend couldn’t be saved and something had taken it from her. Cordelia’s decision to break with her family was not instantaneous, in fact the final straw came over dinner when Cordelia let her thoughts on blood purity be known. Though it was something she had once held in the highest regard, it was clear to her how little it mattered. It hadn’t spared Ines’ life and Decius had willingly left her for a half-blood. The world had changed and things like certain people liking you, or having pretty babies with someone who could leave you in an instant or you were expected to ignore their wandering eye, did not seem like a valuable way to spend her life. 

Her statements shocked her parents but Cordelia no longer cared. She wasn’t devoting her life to an institution she didn’t believe in and her parents had two more children anyhow. Taking her inheritance, she answered a spare room ad in The Daily Prophet and moved in with follow healers SAMUEL WAINSCOTT [close friend/housemate] and POPPY POMFREY [close friend/housemate] and Poppy’s younger sister PRIMROSE POMFREY [close friend/housemate]. Everyone from her old life wasn’t interested in associating with her anymore except for her brother and sister, although that was also away from prying eyes due to the reputation of Moribund’s. Cordelia’s life was different but she was happy. For once in her life she had a purpose she’d chosen for herself and that was to try and save victims in a silent war she already knew was being fought. Cordelia was drawn to the Dangerous' Dai Llewellyn Ward, tending after multiple bite and scratch victims all at the hands of a wolf. Times have grown darker and Cordelia is sure that the creatures are in some way playing a part. Although her friends think she’s crazy, Cordelia is sure she’s on to something and will stop at nothing to prove she’s right.

Hi! I read a story a long while ago where the only thing I really remember is that Hermione and Draco are in a relationship and Lucius is all but catatonic in St. Mungo’s and Hermione starts going there to basically vent about Draco and life and stuff to Lucius because he won’t respond. Draco finds out and loses his shit. And I remember a line, something like, “a good view and fresh air are the best medicine” that Hermione says to Narcissa when they first end up visiting Lucius together. Lucius later repeats that line (or whatever it actually says) to Hermione in a really hoarse voice (possibly the first words he’s said in a long time). Thanks for your help!

A Year and A Day By: Mistrus-Back-From-The-Dead - T, WIP - It’s one thing to marry your enemy but it is completely idiotic to actually fall in love with him. Could it be Stockholm Syndrome? I doubt it. It could have been necessity, I mean I was abandoned by Harry and I felt alone. That must be it.

cruz is living his best college life like he got a fake 3 days after moving in (not that he needs one, kk will let him in no matter what), goes out to bars and parties and tries to impress the girls. lowkey lives in his brothers shadow and always strives to outshine him

lamaster is definitely super quiet and shy but when you get some alcohol in him you wouldn’t be able to shut him up otherwise is super sweet with slight temper issues, but overall one of the funniest guys you’ll ever meet

malmquist is always up for a good time, bffs with dan, has all the good qualities you want in a guy

bantle i feel like would be one of the sweetest guys ever and is genuinely a good guy

lindmark is sweet and fratty but not douchey and just be so nice and dependable like he’s the guy people call when they are drunk and need a ride home, aka the responsible one

gorniak def has dad vibes and does not give one fuck what anyone has to say, he will do whatever he wants whenever he wants

morrison is a sweet lil guy who is respectful and the perfect guy to date

Happy STS! What do your characters do when they have free time?

Hello. Happy STS. I hope you are having a wonderful day. Thank you for the question.

I am going to answer this question for some of the cast of Cold as Ice. There is over 31 characters in that one, so I just picked out a few of the main characters.

From left to right starting from the top:

Camilla Covelli - She likes to tend to the flower garden at the Viscountess' home in Aldeth, Avis. She is proud of the roses and other blossoming flowers. In the garden is where Fletcher, the son of the Viscount, proposed to her.

Cyras Covelli - She likes to spend her time in the aviary in Olessa, the capital of the Olessan Empire. This is where Aquilina is housed. Unlike many of the other ladies in the court, Cyras loves falconry. Aquilina likes the thrill of the hunt, as well.

Aelius Raspanti - He likes a good game of backgammon that he will usually play with other noblemen. Aelius and his sister, Catrina, are thick as thieves and will usually play this game together.

Catrina Raspanti - She likes to spend her time playing card games with other noble women in a salon. Most who attended the salons were educated, well read, and informed about politics, current affairs, and intellectual debates. Catrina was not and would accept an offer from the Stewardess of the Olessan Empire to help train her as the future Queen Consort of the Olessan Empire.

Niccolo Napoli - Cyras will normally say that Niccolo came from an older generation. Niccolo will usually enjoy a fox hunt in the southern part of the Olessan Empire. These hunting events are supposed to be annual and limited to the Emperor's forest, but it's hard to enforce this law when the Duke that oversees the Avis region participates it himself.

Lucius Livius - Lucius was based upon the druid / herbalist archtype. He has a home in the Dregs, the slums district, but he will regularly sneak into the Emperor's Forest and collects the herbs that he will need for the draughts needed for the peasantry. He enjoys strolling through the forests and befriend whatever creatures that he stumbles upon. Lucius is a master of body magick, and there are rumors that he can even shape-shift like the dragons of old.

Vaene Arturis - What can I say about Vaene? He is a shattered man and rarely enjoys anything. There is very little he gets pleasure from. It could even be argued that his womanizing is because he hates himself and doesn't allow himself to get attached. He does enjoy getting drunk. So, there's that. This all changes when he meets Cyras in the Olessan Forum.

There is not much known about the Shade or the Wraith. Their true identities are unknown -- even to other Shadow Blades.

The Shade - The Shade enjoys moving his allies like pieces on a chessboard. He is intelligent and cunning, able to ally himself with Niccolo Napoli to launch a two prong attach on the Olessan monarchy. In his elaborate hideout in the Dregs, there is a chess board that he enjoys playing when he is not pitting the nobility against each other.

The Wraith - The Wraith enjoys training in body magick, and she will usually do this in her spare time. She is one of the most proficient magick users that Arathea has seen since the dragons of old. By using her magick, she can make her bones and flesh slide in place to resemble other people and horrific creatures.

THE WORLD'S FIRST ELECTRIC ROLLER COASTER

Granville T. Woods (April 23, 1856 – January 30, 1910) introduced the “Figure Eight,” the world's first electric roller coaster, in 1892 at Coney Island Amusement Park in New York. Woods patented the invention in 1893, and in 1901, he sold it to General Electric.

Woods was an American inventor who held more than 50 patents in the United States. He was the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War. Self-taught, he concentrated most of his work on trains and streetcars.

In 1884, Woods received his first patent, for a steam boiler furnace, and in 1885, Woods patented an apparatus that was a combination of a telephone and a telegraph. The device, which he called "telegraphony", would allow a telegraph station to send voice and telegraph messages through Morse code over a single wire. He sold the rights to this device to the American Bell Telephone Company.

In 1887, he patented the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, which allowed communications between train stations from moving trains by creating a magnetic field around a coiled wire under the train. Woods caught smallpox prior to patenting the technology, and Lucius Phelps patented it in 1884. In 1887, Woods used notes, sketches, and a working model of the invention to secure the patent. The invention was so successful that Woods began the Woods Electric Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, to market and sell his patents. However, the company quickly became devoted to invention creation until it was dissolved in 1893.

Woods often had difficulties in enjoying his success as other inventors made claims to his devices. Thomas Edison later filed a claim to the ownership of this patent, stating that he had first created a similar telegraph and that he was entitled to the patent for the device. Woods was twice successful in defending himself, proving that there were no other devices upon which he could have depended or relied upon to make his device. After Thomas Edison's second defeat, he decided to offer Granville Woods a position with the Edison Company, but Woods declined.

In 1888, Woods manufactured a system of overhead electric conducting lines for railroads modeled after the system pioneered by Charles van Depoele, a famed inventor who had by then installed his electric railway system in thirteen United States cities.

Following the Great Blizzard of 1888, New York City Mayor Hugh J. Grant declared that all wires, many of which powered the above-ground rail system, had to be removed and buried, emphasizing the need for an underground system. Woods's patent built upon previous third rail systems, which were used for light rails, and increased the power for use on underground trains. His system relied on wire brushes to make connections with metallic terminal heads without exposing wires by installing electrical contactor rails. Once the train car had passed over, the wires were no longer live, reducing the risk of injury. It was successfully tested in February 1892 in Coney Island on the Figure Eight Roller Coaster.

In 1896, Woods created a system for controlling electrical lights in theaters, known as the "safety dimmer", which was economical, safe, and efficient, saving 40% of electricity use.

Woods is also sometimes credited with the invention of the air brake for trains in 1904; however, George Westinghouse patented the air brake almost 40 years prior, making Woods's contribution an improvement to the invention.

Woods died of a cerebral hemorrhage at Harlem Hospital in New York City on January 30, 1910, having sold a number of his devices to such companies as Westinghouse, General Electric, and American Engineering. Until 1975, his resting place was an unmarked grave, but historian M.A. Harris helped raise funds, persuading several of the corporations that used Woods's inventions to donate money to purchase a headstone. It was erected at St. Michael's Cemetery in Elmhurst, Queens.

LEGACY

▪Baltimore City Community College established the Granville T. Woods scholarship in memory of the inventor.

▪In 2004, the New York City Transit Authority organized an exhibition on Woods that utilized bus and train depots and an issue of four million MetroCards commemorating the inventor's achievements in pioneering the third rail.

▪In 2006, Woods was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

▪In April 2008, the corner of Stillwell and Mermaid Avenues in Coney Island was named Granville T. Woods Way.
