Picked up a new sketchbook last week, with tan instead of white pages. Figure I'm gonna fill it up with Sarant stuff, both for my book Wolfen's Rage and the Wolfen & Warlocks game I'm making.
"There are three facts I try to live by: it's not naive to remember that dawn will always break the night, it's not cynical to assume there's always another storm on the horizon, and it is beyond stupid to antagonize a wolfen of any size." -Lillia Crant
And some Lore below, if anyone's interested:
In the earliest inkling of a moment, there existed darkness, and light, and little else besides specks drifting between.
Then-
Three sets of hands reached out, to collect those specks, to shape and weave and ignite them, into something more. Something alive.
Those hands belonged to the Forgotten Ones, known by no other names besides these: the One Who Saw, the One Who Sang, and the One Who Spoke. They possessed no purpose beyond crafting new worlds, as they traveled from one edge of the cosmos to another and back again.
The Forgotten Ones collected their materials, and set about creating a series of realms, each balanced against another. One for life, and one for death. One each for fire, and water; for earth and air; for light and shadow. And last of all, two miniature realms, filled with leftover power that would shield this new world from prying eyes, and alert the Forgotten Ones should anything Else attempt to meddle with their endeavors.
Only one task remained after that...
This new world required Guardians. And so, drawing from the power of those final two realms, the golden and the azure moons, the Forgotten Ones breathed life into a pair of great wolves: Wol and Calu.
The One Who Saw showed these two the scope of their home. The One Who Sang taught them the skills of creation. And the One Who Spoke assigned to them their task: to protect, to guide, and to nurture all who would come after.
Young and full of magic, the wolves accepted their charge, swearing to uphold the balance between realms for all their lifetime. Satisfied, the Forgotten Ones bid them farewell, and left.

B and G
B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?
One, sort of - there's a very vivid account my mother's retold for years about a car accident that would have killed her as a small child if not for a bystander who intervened rather dramatically. The MCU fic I wrote based on that true event is a little skewed, translated from the '70s to today, but I still think I got the essence of it down in Footie Pajamas.
G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?
I think my best work comes out when I have an idea, sit down, and write the whole thing start to finish, with a general notion of where I want it to go but allowing the details to come to life at their own pace. (Unfortunately, time and the Muse and life in general doesn't always cooperate, and there are plenty of unfinished stories where I get hung up in a particular spot due to lack of inspiration or writing energy.) It can be helpful, if I've got a particular future conversation or interaction in mind, to jot that down before my brain forgets, but to wholesale plan things out chapter by chapter where I'm *able* to write the seventh scene, then the fourth, then the ninth, then the third? The only thing I'm able to dedicate that much attention towards is my biggest original project, Stories from Sarant, literally because I've been planning out three trilogies seven short stories and two standalone novels for it since I was in middle school.

Spang, Stainbrook helped Byers candidacy

When rumors circulated late last year and in January that Toledo Councilman Sandy Spang was thinking of running for Lucas County commissioner, the general reaction was that she could win and that the 12-year Democratic Party monopoly on the Lucas County commissioners’ office might finally be broken.
After all, Ms. Spang is a popular candidate in Toledo and a proven vote-getter, able to drill down to bureaucratic problems that seem to evade others.
Read more by Tom Troy
Plus, her opponent, former Maumee Judge Gary Byers, brings some baggage to the contest, stemming from an ongoing feud with the Maumee City Council over the cost of running the court.
So even though 2018 is likely to be more of a Democratic wave year than a Republican wave, and even though Democrats hold a edge in voter registration in Lucas County, Ms. Spang’s chances of beating Mr. Byers in a head-to-head race would have been about even.
That is, if she had agreed to run as a Republican. Or if she ran as an independent and no Republican filed.
However, it was not to be.
In a meeting in January, former Republican state representative and senator Mark Wagoner Jr. urged Ms. Spang to file as a Republican. He advised her he was attempting to take over the Republican Party from then-Chairman Jon Stainbrook and that he was confident of success (which turned out to be correct) in becoming the chairman in June, in time to strongly support her candidacy.
He also told her that as a Republican, she would have the party’s financial backing, the benefit of its volunteers, support from the state party, and her name on the party’s slate cards that would be mailed out to voters. And she would have the anti-Byers vote entirely to herself.
Mr. Wagoner assured Ms. Spang that if she chose to run as a Republican she would easily defeat the candidate that Mr. Stainbrook was supporting in the primary, Sandy Bashaw, a political novice.
Ms. Spang would certainly have won the Republican nomination for county commissioner on May 8 if she had chosen to run, as Mr. Wagoner urged her to do. Her views are basically conservative. She voted in Republican primaries from at least 1996 to 2010. She often votes with other Republicans on city council. She only opted to be an independent to run for council in 2013.
Ms. Spang refused Mr. Wagoner’s advice, contending that she wanted to offer consistency to the voters, who know her as an independent.
In so doing, Ms. Spang has reduced her chances of success. She contends she’s well known enough for voters to pick her out of a three-way contest.
The conventional political realities are that the race is going to be split three ways between two candidates named “Sandy” and the Democratic nominee, former Judge Byers. A Republican could win. In 2010, also an off-year election, Republican George Sarantou, a well-known city councilman, came within a whisker of defeating Sylvania Township lawyer Carol Contrada. The effect of having three people on the ballot introduces a novel element this year.
It’s probably not a coincidence that, in his former capacity as GOP chairman, Mr. Stainbrook found a candidate named “Sandy” to run against Sandy Spang, as he has put up candidates with similar-sounding names before in order to confuse voters.
The record of independents running successfully for county commissioner in Ohio is not good. Even worse is the record of independents winning against both a Democratic and a Republican nominee.
Mr. Stainbrook went out of his way to make sure that there would be a Republican nominee, personally collecting signatures for Ms. Bashaw’s candidate petition.
Surprise endings should never be ruled out in politics. Look at Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton. The polls and conventional wisdom said it couldn’t happen.
Likewise, Ms. Spang could pull off a surprise victory if she runs a strong campaign. She has the endorsement of the Toledo Firefighters Local 92, which has a history of picking winners.
One of the things that Mr. Stainbrook was good at was filling up the ballot with names of Republican candidates to run against incumbent Democrats.
Those candidates hardly ever won, nor were they seriously expected to. They were there in case the Democratic candidate blew up unexpectedly and also to force the Democratic candidate to spend money, both good reasons in the absence of a good candidate.
One might have thought that, faced with likely defeat for Ms. Bashaw, the Republican chairman would rather have steered Ms. Bashaw to another race and root for the independent who in her heart is a Republican to get elected to the Lucas County board of commissioners.
If Mr. Byers wins the election in November, the first thing he should do is call both Ms. Spang and Mr. Stainbrook and thank them profusely.

Added a new commission option to my Ko-Fi, where folks can request a translation of their name into my Amkyn Runes with a poetic interpretation of the associated meanings. Because this is apparently going to be a Thing I do from now on...
From the images:
(in light blue and green)
Emily: Eastern Mountain, Wandering Water, and Emphasized Dawn
A hard start to your path
Always looking ahead for what comes next
The best is yet to come
(in orange and brown)
Aren: Arrow born of roots, the clear light of dawn
Power from the past, clarity of vision with each new start

Wolfen’s Rage is LIVE, Baby!
Ebook now available, and paperback version pending! I DID IT!!! xD

The elf took a deep breath, drew back on her bow, then leaped forward and released.
And realized her mistake a moment later.
Nentanuk, fortunately, must have heard her coming, because the dragon-woman turned and managed to raise a shielding spell just in the nick of time.
“I’m so sorry!” Andren cried, running towards where her arrow hovered less than an inch away from the magician’s chest. For her part, Nentanuk looked more startled than upset.
“Did you just try to shoot me?”
“Yes! I’m sorry! I didn’t realize it was you until after I fired and then I couldn’t do anything and I’m so glad you caught it in time because I almost-”
“You’re babbling.”
Andren snapped her mouth shut mid-word. All she could do was stand there, looking at Nentanuk in terror, who stared back impassively. Then the dragon-woman sighed, and plucked the arrow out of her spell to hand back to Andren.
“Don’t do that again.”

So, I’m gonna try something new this week.
In the interests of “putting myself out there”, I’ve been encouraged to start making videos of how I go about sketching my book characters, whilst-and-at-the-same-time talking about them, my book, upcoming stories, worldbuilding, etc etc. These will most likely be posted to a YouTube account and then shared here, once I figure out how to go about such things.
I’m also thinking of making prints of said sketches available for sale, in a “buy the first book or pre-order the upcoming second directly from me, and I’ll include some art in your package” type deal.
Chomper’s gonna help. Look how attentive to detail he is already x’D

"When the cell door slid open, Crant allowed herself to glare, but otherwise remained still. If her captors expected enchanted shackles were enough to make the woman panic, they could think again."

Wolfen’s Rage illustraaaatiooooons~!
I figured sticking to pencil would be best, since I can’t shade as easily with my ink pens and I decided against watercolor until my technique improves.
Crant with the wolfen and double moons, Seesor and Krun, Teresa and Mentras, Nentanuk and the twins Andren and Aldra, and Tali and Fren who appear in the epilogue! I’m debating adding a couple of maps for the tail end, but other than that I am firmly sticking to just these five images and the chapter headers, which is a vast improvement from the days when I planned on, like, a picture every three or four pages.
Mom’s gonna read it over the weekend to give me final feedback, then I sort out the last few technical details (age category, price, etc.), and after that- well. I could be uploading this to publish on Monday. Holy hot damn.

Symbols for my Wolfen’s Rage crew. Think I’ve finally reached the point of getting over not-looking for a literary agent, and I may very well be self-publishing my first novel later this week...

“The tunnel only took moments to fly down in her panic. Climbing back up required an hour of painful movement, the blood trail marking young Nentanuk’s progress.”

Magicborn - Hatched with a malformed wing and uncommon colors, little Tanu has nothing with which to secure herself a future in one of the Dragon Courts... Nothing, that is, except for a rare ability to perform magic. Without a teacher, however, the sole way to learn is to read spellbooks - and the only ones in all of Dragon Mount are those kept locked away in the Queen’s library.
Good thing Tanu’s good at ignoring rules.
“Shisn.”
Sparks flew from Tanu’s clawed fingertips - two, five, seven - but swiftly fizzled back into nothingness. Scowling, she rubbed her hands together, before trying again. “Shisn!”
Again, sparks, but nothing more. Growling slightly to herself, Tanu almost reached for the glow-stone lying unused beside her, to use it to check the book again. She stopped herself, however. With a deep breath, she turned her focus inward, concentrating. The beating of her heart was easy to find; the warmth running from it, a little harder. Farther down and deeper inward, she concentrated, until finally, finally, Tanu found her inner light.
She lifted a hand. “SHISN!”
This time, the sparks stayed lit.
They circled for a moment, then banded together, forming a little green flame cupped by her palm - hovering, dancing, casting light and a bit of warmth, but not burning. Not out of her control. She smiled in triumph.
And then a voice rumbled from the darkness, “Hello, little thief.”
---
SO.
I have decided to write up some of my ideas for short stories about Nentanuk Magicborn back when she was a kid, first breaking rules and changing societal norms, and self-publish them in an effort to get myself taken more seriously when I send query letters to literary agents. Keep your fingers crossed for me, yeah?

Inktober Day 3 - I Take My Leaf
This is the face of someone thinking, Why is this young idiot celebrating already? Don’t they realize I’m perfectly willing and able to jump down and continue dueling through the canopy? Hmph. Well, they’re about to find out.
Much thanks to @verycleverart for the awesome prompt list - I admit, when I first saw this one, my initial idea was to draw someone doing a mic drop but with a big leaf, which managed to twist its way into This. No, I have no explanation. My train of thought just runs on a very winding track x’D

Since for this year’s Nanowrimo I’m doing the second draft of my book Trials of Youth, I decided to make good use of my time stuck at a clerk’s desk by sketching a few of the main characters. Didn’t have my own art supplies with me, but these didn’t turn out half bad for ball-point pen on sticky notes!
Tero and Rajan (AKA The Night Terror and the Ragebeast) are Amkyn kids who’ve been slaves since infancy and earn their keep in their owner’s gladiator pit. Despite their two species, Felisapi and Ritikai, typically being adversaries, the pair are best friends who’d do anything for each other - even risk deadly punishment by escaping together when the opportunity presents itself.
Mifus the centaur is *supposed* to be alone on his coming of age journey, but of course that went pear-shaped right from the start. He’s an up and coming sass-master with absolutely no ability to turn his friends away from the lure of Adventure, and spends a lot of the book sighing to himself.
And poor Fren, the young wizard prodigy who decided to spend his year studying abroad in the company of his best friend, the ever-adventurous Tali - whom he has a rather obvious crush on. Sadly, she’s a bit of a daredevil who often over-estimates his magical abilities and tends to get the both of them into trouble.
Fren and Mifus bond very quickly over how much they sigh in exasperation. Tero and Rajan find them exceedingly entertaining to observe.

Decided that I’ve dropped these guys into enough alignment charts over the years that it was time to make a quick one of my own!
Warning: while Sweetness maintains an even concentration no matter size, Bitterness becomes Highly Concentrated and Dangerous when condensed into beings of small stature. (Ex, Seesor and Ama are equally adorable, Sana and Mentras are disproportionately snarky and will not hesitate to Cut a Bitch)
Warning Additional: Bitterness gains potency with age, and minor dragon gods left to simmer for thousands of years will put even the most condensed shortie to shame. (Ex, Nentanuk will not Cut a Bitch, she goes straight for the fireball so intense it straight up disintegrates)
