So it turns out one of the unforeseen side effects of getting rid of the tumblr app on my phone is...not spending as much time on tumblr every day. Who would've guessed

hey! this is chance & here’s this week’s prompt. what websites or resources do you use while you write or develop a character/story? what do you think of them and would you recommend them?
hiya chance! thanks for the ask! also i went way too detailedwith this one again, sorry adsajfhdks.
i included links to every resource i listed that is either free or freemium, aside from one's that are on most people's computers by default.
i've tried out a lot of different stuff over the years — i don't have wi-fi so i have strong preference for offline programs and tools! so the majority of these are kept on your computer.
my main tool right now is obsidian — prior to that i used quoll writer, joplin, and plain old notepad (yeah...) though, and i haven't finished transferring and reformatting everything yet ^^. i only reopen quoll now though to look at my old notes. i highly recommend obsidian, it's so much fun once you figure it out and highly responsive. quoll is useful too but i had some issues with it, including the occasional lost content, random crash, and just general slowness.
i use obsidian for keeping all of my brainstorming together, backing up my discord rambles, outlining plots, and organizing my worldbuilding and character profiles. i also sometimes write short stories or little one-off scenes in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
a sample of my obsidian setup for serpent's quest + a different obsidian setup i have for another project that is. a bit too cheesy and embarrassing to share.
i do dabble in conlanging for serpent's quest! originally i kept all my words in a notepad file, but i ended up downloading polyglot to help keep things organized and make it easy to generate new vocabulary offline! i keep formatted notes on my conlangs in libre office (which is also what i use to write my longer stuff). i also use polyglot to generate names and organize their meanings/origins when i'm stuck!
Tumblr media
my polyglot system for names specificially!
on occasion i use twine, but usually for specific things like family trees, timelines, or connecting my universe together. however i recently figured out how to do this with obsidian too so i'm probably gonna move that part over to obsidian as well (obsidian is great yall)
Tumblr media
a section of one of my family trees done in twine
some adjacent resources i use include:
clip studio + concepts + physical sketchbook for art & visual brainstorming. i also designed the conlang script in clip studio. i find concepts is really useful for getting rough visual ideas out quickly, although it runs a bit slow on my computer. it's a lot less polished than clip studio, but that kind of takes the pressure off and makes it easier to just experiment. it's like using ms paint but with slightly better tools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
some rough ideas i drafted using concepts!
Tumblr media
sometimes i also use it for "hand-written" digital notes, which is super helpful for brainstorming ideas
-
allusion + pureref for visual references. you could definitely use these to store moodboards too if you wanted to have some inspiration on screen while you write or brainstorm, although i haven't done that myself though. also might be good for reference images of the setting, so you know what the place looks like. pureref lets you keep things on the screen, whereas allusion allows you to create custom tags and folders for your reference images, making it easy to find them and plop them into pureref when you need them.
Tumblr media
this is my allusion set up! i mostly got it because i had way too many references for pureref to keep up with, i still need to go through and tag everything properly, but if you're just gonna use it for keeping moodboards or character sheets organized i think it can be super useful (and offline!)
websites i use when developing things or generating inspiration include tvtropes, wikipedia, findmypast (for old newspapers) and ofc youtube and tumblr.
when i'm developing a story or character, i like to go through tv tropes and see the different archetypes and how different works have subverted or played them straight. i almost always walk away with an idea i want to explore or flip on its head.
wikipedia is great to use as a starting point. i usually try to go through the sources and see if i can find more in depth stuff that way, or use the names it mentions to see if i can get more. i also use it to check if my names make sense if i'm pulling them from a real culture. i tend not to worry as much about the meaning being accurate, i'm more concerned with whether it makes sense for a 40 year old to be named dillian. so i usually double check the wikipedia page for a name and look at the notable people with that name, what country they're from, and what years they were born in.
i found findmypast while i was doing research for adigore, but i can see it being immensely useful (and very entertaining) for general research. it has an immense amount of newspapers you can read and search by keywords. you can't access all of them, but you can access enough that it doesn't really matter.
with youtube i love it for more casual idea acquisition! i'll sometimes listen to videos about worldbuilding or writing in the background during work. i definitely prefer it as a well of ideas or worldbuilding zone rather than a "writing advice" corner, all of these things are hugely influenced by one's own opinions, but i think you can still walk away with some cool stuff regardless (or a better idea of what doesn't work for you!)
here's a few specific channels i've been enjoying lately.
the grungeon master - explores and questions fantasy tropes and ideas, usually done in the context of d&d, but i've found the discussions to be highly transferrable to general fantasy as well
kaz rowe - modern and medieval history, culture and historical misconceptions, a gold mine if you're doing any type of writing at all regarding the victorian period as well, and also just entertaining in general. often explores media (especially queer) in a historical and cultural context too!
localscriptman - from the perspective of a screenwriter, i've found the writing advice to be very helpful especially if you sometimes need more bluntly delivered ideas. this won't be for everyone but i feel like if it is for you it'll just work.
and for tumblr well, it's all of yall! sharing cool stuff, and stumbling upon cool blogs and the recommendations they give. a treasure trove of resources and knowledge! thank you.
god why did this get so long. why did i spend so much time on this. i could have just done a bulletpoint list. i am so good at answering simple questions. aaaaaa haha </3

Hello, finding a lot of interesting posts on your blog and hope you are doing well! Anyway, i had some questions about fanlore and was wondering if i could ask you or get pointed to someone else. Mostly about like, what to post, like notoriety, if that changes based on if it's the "right" vs. the "wrong" type of fandom to be associated with fanlore. And also some stuff about adding or quoting stuff you're involved in but that's less of a big deal and more fiddly.
Adding stuff you're involved in is fine. Just be aware that other people might edit later, and if there are controversies, that might include editing in ways that don't put your participation in a good light. We encourage people to add stuff they know, and in fandom, that's often "stuff I'm directly involved in." The biggest issue here is privacy - we've got some complicated rules about maintaining privacy; we discourage connecting people's usernames with real names unless it's directly relevant (and sometimes not even then). And sometimes we separate usernames on one platform from usernames on another one. (If you have permission from the people involved, then multiple names are fine.)
Post EVERYTHING we want it ALL anYtHinG iS GoOd. Don't care how good the language is. We have a regular editor whose native language is not English and she translates with Google Translate and posts that way and someone goes through later and cleans up the phrasing AND WE LOVE THIS.
We don't have a "notability" standard like Wikipedia. We don't have a "citation needed" thing, although info without sources may wind up being rephrased into "some fans claim that..." instead of phrased like an absolute fact.
If you and two friends made an 8-page zine that you printed on the school printer and handed out to about 12 people... that's worth a Fanlore page. If you planned to make a zine, and had a name and a template and two volunteer artists and a theme and you got some comments, but it never happened... that is also worth a page.
There's some weirdness around "what kind of fandom do we cover?" Theoretically, anything is welcome; in practice, we're not covering mainstream sports fandoms (y'know, the guys who dress up in blue & yellow facepaint and wear giant foam fingers) and we're edging around classic sci-fi convention-ish literary fandom. (We have some of that. But we're not trying to recreate or override Fancyclopedia's work.) We're also not trying to overlap tvtropes, which gets more complicated to sort out, because we do cover a lot of the same topics, but we have a different focus for them.
For myself, I'd love to see
More video game fandom coverage, esp related to mods, controversies/dramas, and the screaming that happens every time a company releases a remake on a new platform for more than the original. Also speedrunning info.
More conventions, especially media-fandom/fanfic-ish conventions
Fannish trends on TikTok
Cosplay. Lots of cosplay. We are missing so much info on the history & trends of cosplay.
Pages for modern zines and pages for the processes involved in making them. (When I got into fandom, there were no "interest check/ mod applications/ contributor applications" etc. phases.)
Everything that's going on in Discord OMG we are missing SO DAMN MUCH FANDOM that is only happening in closed communities that you can't even search the names of and they're all gonna fuckin' VANISH when Discord does some weird fannish purge thing.
Updating older/early pages with new info for those fandoms, or new ways their common tropes connect to new fandoms.
Also, we always need submissions and voting on the Featured Article Nominations. Anyone can suggest. Anyone can vote.
...as you might be able to tell, I can talk about this AT LENGTH IN GREAT DETAIL.

Hey this is the omega anon. To address something, he joined a server I'm in before i found out he does these things. My main interactions with the fe3h fandom is just what I see on my Twitter feed or tumblr tags. Most of my discussion of fe3h is in discord servers usually among friends. So I had no idea he was so infamous until someone sent an anon about him to emblemvania. I just wanted to explain why I didn't know about this sooner.
Oh to be clear I’m not blaming you or anything, you’re really not responsible for keeping tabs on your friends and acquaintances to make sure they’re not being wankers behind your back. I was just curious, I figured either you didn’t engage with fandom like he does (i.e. mostly meta) or you just don’t talk about the game much outside of the discord server. Or I suppose the server could be non-Three Houses related and you don’t care about the game at all, but you did say he’s mentioned his feelings on Dimitri so I figured that probably wasn’t it.
In case you’re curious tho, this is all of his known and suspected activity:
Aggressively arguing on Reddit, including r/FireEmblem, r/FireEmblemHeroes, r/FireEmblemThreeHouses, and r/Edelgard (currently confirmed banned from r/FireEmblem, as discussed in previous posts).
Aggressively arguing on Serenesforest.
Engaging in an editing war on Edelgard’s wiki page and filling it with poorly spelled and grammatically incorrect misinformation.
Engaging in an editing war on Edelgard’s TVTropes page (apparently he doesn’t have that much influence there, though, and he’s mostly been kept in check).
Aggressively arguing with people in the comments of YouTube videos about Edelgard.
Suspected: Setting up numerous Twitter accounts geared toward Dimitri or Dimileth hate. I suppose we can’t technically prove these were him, but the language and syntax match up with him and frankly, considering how much effort he puts in on every other platform, it wouldn’t surprise me. Though these accounts are small and only have a handful of tweets each.
To be clear I say “aggressively arguing” because 1) When he argues he will argue for hours straight, constantly refreshing his inbox so he can immediately send back a response, 2) He’ll come back to arguments hours after they’ve happened. I’ve seen him necro threads 12 and 24 hours after most people stopped responding to argue, and 3) More often than not arguments with him end with him resorting to petty name calling and insults.
If you mainly use Twitter and Tumblr then I can see why you wouldn’t have come across a lot of this stuff, since if he is active on Twitter it’s mainly through sock puppet accounts and I’ve never seen him on Tumblr.
(Also if anyone remembers something of his activity that I forgot then feel free to add it)
Anyways I’m not gonna tell you what to do or how to feel about the guy but uh. Yeah there’s a reason why so many people in the fandom recognize his name.

“TVTropes, Baby”
alright, for starters, i will mention that while natori does actually have a very small tvtropes article lmao, i’m going to try to avoid those particular ones bc they’re all fairly obvious! so! to start with--
Tumblr media
Only Sane Man
ok, most obvious. and also listed on the main article, but natori isn’t included on it there lmao i think it could be bc he ultimately plays less of an active role in dissuading the king than lune or yuki do, but i think he still deserves to be known as one of The Sane Ones lmao
Not So Above It All
also likely part of what lessens his status as a brain cell-holder. i tend to compare him to yuki a lot, bc they are the two most obviously level-headed of the cat kingdom bunch, but for me the biggest difference between them is that yuki, at her core, has a much more recognizably human outlook. her original home has always been the human world, and even as a stray, she would have acquired some of their values and such
natori’s home has always been the cat kingdom. he has very little comprehension of human logic and morality. yuki is a normal cat, even now in her time in the cat kingdom. natori is closer to something like the fae
Comic Trio
and i am always There for a comic trio, so of course i was bound to fall for the cat kingdom trio lies down
it’s probably not hard to match them up to their respective roles-- the cat king is their leader, natoru is the fool, and natori gets stuck with the straight man honor. while he’s not necessarily ‘smarter’ than either of the other two, he is far more level-headed and anxious lmao and always, always concerned with the consequences of Every Possible Action. he’s also unfortunately easily Brushed off, which is how their status quo is maintained, ha (also, he’s occasionally Not So Above It All, as mentioned above)
Cloudcuckoolander’s Minder
particularly in the post-canon verse, ha, where most of his time is taken up with keeping the ex-king out of trouble and placated. that they’ve been friends for some time, which has given natori a long time to get to know the king means it’s not entirely Difficult for him. it’s just kind of a full-time job
discord has a running joke of ‘media baron isn’t allowed to watch’ bc it’ll Encourage him, but ever since running across that idea, i’m surprised (sort of) that no one’s thought of the same with the cat king laughs
Badly Battered Babysitter
this is one of my favorite comedic tropes and it fits snugly in with natori’s role in the story :v also i’m amused at the idea that while he’s very good and practiced at taking care of children (particularly young children/toddlers), he’s also 100% a panicky, high-strung sort who likes to keep a certain amount of order to Things, something most children have no heed of laughs
half the fun of natori’s character is putting him in chaotic situations and watching him struggle and flail to set everything back on track
this also puts him at odd with natoru, who is much less practiced at caring for kids, but has a more easygoing attitude to go with her haphazard, casual methods
Broken Pedestal
getting into Big Headcanon territory here-- this refers to the cat king’s father, for whom natori was also an advisor (for about two years). aaaand. that’s as much as i’m going in to for now :v i have a fic in the works about this. if you Know this trope, tho, you can probably figure out where it’s going
also in general, natori is prone to this, bc it’s in his nature to ignore and/or smooth over his loved ones’ flaws and mistakes
Sugar-and-Ice Personality
i haven’t really gotten much opportunity to explore this in interactions, which is a shame, but the truth is, natori has two distinct sides to him, and it’s mostly come about from his career. while he’s naturally more of an introvert, he’s been very efficient at sort of Training himself to be more sociable and chatty in certain situations that relate back to his duties. he doesn’t flinch or recoil when asked to engage in small talk or other polite chatter, and he has no difficulties in speaking to crowds or strangers or when tasked with presentations and the like
however, this is in a purely Professional or scholastic kind of setting, which is what he’s Comfortable with, and to be more genuine and warm with those same strangers and crowds is not something that he’s practiced at
so i do imagine that how any given character sees him is highly dependent on how close they are-- some will Know him as cordial but distant and harried, and others will know him as much less composed or cold as those who only interact with him in a professional context

Sword and Shield were revealed, so now it’s time to try and figure out what the fuck the Boxart legendarily might be based off of
Excalibur and Pridwen
Yeah, these are the obvious ones. Excalibur, as I imagine most of us know, is the sword of King Arthur (actually, one of the swords, but we’re not here to discuss that) that he got from the Lady of the Lake (despite strange women lying in ponds distributing swords being no basis for a system of government), or the sword in the stone. Meanwhile, Pridwen is his shield. Theoretically, this is almost certainly some part in the unseen box art legend’s origins, and also opens up a third version to be Spear after Rhongomiant... or Knife after Carnwennan. Somehow I doubt that last one. Could also be staff after Merlin’s staff, but IDK.
Geri and Freki
So, that explains the idea of Sword and Shield being... well, Sword and Shield, but that raises the question of what the wolf heads are supposed to mean. One idea I thought of is it being based off of Geri and Freki, two wolves that accompany Odin and pretty much eat and drink everything but the wine Odin lives off of. Alternativly, in a kenning about Viðrir (or Vidrir for those that can’t find that odd symbol or don’t want to copy-paste like I did), one of Odin’s many other names, where they were said to be greedy for the corpses of those that fell in battle (remember, Odin is also at least partially a death god). Coincidentally, Geri and Freki both mean either "the ravenous one” or “the greedy one” in ye olde norse.
Sköll and Hati
Alternativly, they could be based off Sköll and Hati Hróðvitnisson, two children of Fenrir/Fenris that chased the sun goddess Sól (Sköll) and the moon god Máni (Hati) across the sky until Ragnarok when they are eaten. Fun stuff.
Of note, while the UK isn’t a Nordic country, I wouldn’t rule out the possibilities of Gerri and Freki/Sköll and Hati, because of the historic Norman Conquests, the possible Norse influences on Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde (Kalos is France, and iirc France much less influenced by Norse cultures then England at the very least (not compleatly sure about Scotland and Wales. As for the influences, Xerneas=Eikþyrnir and the four stags Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór [the stags on Yggdrassil] along with the Celtic god Cernunnos, Yveltal=Hræsvelgr, Veðrfölnir, and the Celtic goddess the Morrigan and Zygarde= across it’s various forms, Níðhöggr, Loki’s children Fenrir, Jörmungandr, and Hel, Garmr, tsuchinoko the Japanese Cryptid behind Dunsparce, and nāga from South Asia). Also, considering how Hoenn (Kyushu) has it’s boxart legendaries possibly inspired by Jewish myth (Kyogre=Leviathan Groudon=Behemoth, and Rayquaza=Ziz), Platinum (Sinnoh, which is Hokkaido) has one of it’s boxart legendaries partially based off Abrahmic (mostly seems to be Christian and Judaic) myth (while Dialga and Plakia=Izanami and Izanagi, Giratina=Fallen angels [like Lucifer], Archangel Samael from the Talmund, the beasts from Revelations, and the centipede Seta from the Japanese fairytale My Lord Bag of Rice), Unova (New York [really Long Island] and part of New Jersey]) has boxart legendaries inspired by Taoism (Reshiram=Yang, Zekrom=Yin, Kyurem=Wuji, with Reshiram and Zekrom possibly also having some Zoroastrian mixed in [with Rehsiram being Ahura Mazda and Zekrom being Angra Mainyu]), and Alola (Hawaii) has legendaries that draw from various non-Hawaiian sources (Solgaleo=Alchemical Lion and maybe the eye of Ra, Lunala=the Aztec goddess Itzpapalotl, the Mayan god Camazotz, the Samoan goddess Leutogi, and the mythological eight-eyed Pe'a-pe'a-makawalu from Hawaii, and Necrozma=alongside prisism and eclipses, Bulbapedia mentions it [well, Ultra Necrozma] could be based off of the Hawaiian goddess Kihawahine), I don’t think the origins being from another real=life region would mean much, and at least the UK would have some ties to Norse Myth. That’s better then every one of the aforementioned boxart legendary sans Lunala and Necrozma. And more then my next guess, unless you count the romans
Laelaps and the Teumessian Fox, zìxīang máodùn, and the Irresistible Forces Paradox
My other guess is from Greek Myth, which iirc is actually not really represented that much among Pokemon Legendaries. Could be wrong, though. Anyhow (to copypaste from Discord), the Teumessian fox was a giant-ass fox that was destined to never be caught that was sent by Dionysus to terrorize Thebes because of a national crime, which I'm assuming is really just Dionysus being a dick. Anyhow, someone got the idea to use the dog Laelaps, who was maybe a gift from Zeus to Europa and was said to catch whatever she was hunting. This lead to a paradox of if the dog that always catches what she was hunting could catch the fox hat could never be caught, which Zeus thought on too much, got confused and pissed at, and turned them into the constellations Canis Major (Laelaps) and Canis Minor (Teumessian fox). This could be the origin, could fit in with Excalibur and Pridwen, and also more. One is the Chinese idiom zìxīang máodùn, which (going off of wikipedia, so please correct me) means “ from each-other spear shield“ and self-contradiction, due to it being based off of a tale of a merchant selling a spear that could pierce and shield, and a shield that could block any spear. When asked what would happen if the two collided, he responded with silence. Both of these are Irresistible Force Paradoxes, where two opposing unstopable forces are placed against each other, and could be the origin, due to the weapon and armor of the titles (even though it’s a sword, not a spear) and the canine heads (maybe the shield head is actually a fox?)
All of this is just guesswork, however, and won’t be known until we see the Boxart legends
Edit: forgot to mention originally, but the Excalibur and Pridwen idea was mentioned by someone the TVtropes forums, and the Laelaps and Teumessian fox part was inspired by a comment on Gnoggin's video.

For the TvTrope Page, what kind of Media does Discord Murder would correspond to?
I guess podcast or webshow??? It’s mostly a podcast if I’m honest.
Speaking of which, hey guys, go edit the Discord Murder Party TvTropes page! TvTropes is one of my favorite things of all time and nothing makes me happier than the idea that a thing we made has a TvTropes page.

Have any of you created a Fanpage for a fanfic that you really liked?
I am mostly referring to TVTropes when I mean fanpages, but this could also apply to other things such as giving a fanfic its own wiki page or creating a forum for it on other websites such as Discord or other websites dealing with forum. Also forgot to add, have you ever recommended a fic because you felt it deserved to get more recognition?
It's probably every fanfic writer's dream come true because it means someone took the time and effort on their end to create a page detailing the fanfic lore for a work that isn't theirs. And believe me, it is a lot of work.
At the moment, my first Fanpage is for a Genshin Impact one on TVTropes. It is fun writing up the page, but also hard work. If I didn't love the fanfic so much, I probably wouldn't have started the fan page at all.
