New shoes and a new companion (day 14-16)
The hunt for shoes in was successful and after two exhausting hours in the outdoor store we treated ourselves on a real Cornish Pasty. It was probably "award-winning" (this is how every Pasty seller here describes their baked goods), or at least it tasted really good.

I feel like I had to recover from the day in the town more than from all the walking, but there was not much time for that because we wanted to plan the next day(s) and have dinner early. Luckily we did do so, because it was in the hostel kitchen when we met Emma (19) from Germany! Finally someone else who was doing the South West Coast Path camping! We had a lot to talk about like where we were when it stormed/ snowed, our favorite camping spots so far (Emma had camped beneath four massive oak trees), and how we were all annoyed by the slippery mud all the time. We were one day behind Emma as we still had to complete the etappe from Padstow to Porthcothan, so we wanted to say goodbye with a bag of ginger nuts, when Emma suggested she would wait one day in the hostel and walk with us!
The walk from Padstow was quite nice and because of the low tide we could walk a long stretch on the beach where we saw a huge jellyfish. I dropped Rosa at the hostel in Treyarnon Bay again and after a cup of tea continued walking with Emma (if this construction sounds a bit confusing to you, I understand). Emma and I wanted to get outside and camping again, and Rosa enjoyed her evening off and alone. This time, however, it was only a few km until we saw Rosa again. We camped just behind Porthcothan and met her the next morning in Mawgan Poth. On the way there we passed the Bedruan steps, a formation of rocks sticking out of the water near the cliffs, that is apparently famous and looked quite beautiful in the rough sea. We also saw a first seal of that day (later a second one). When we continued walking with the three of us we passed lots of nice beaches and the whether was good.

We reached Newquay, the bigger town in the area where we had been two days before to buy shoes, and although we wanted to leave it quickly, we had to cross some things off our to do list first: buy food and a new gas canister, check if Rosas package with new and complete hiking trousers had arrived, and send a package ourselves with some of the unused things in our backpacks that we wanted to get rid off in order so save weight.
When we got to the edge of the town, it turned out we had to make a detour because the ferry over the estuary wasn't going. We reached the walking bridge that was only accessible at low tide just in time, and crossed it, before a gurgling sounds announced the arrival of the high tide water coming in from the sea. Two last dog walkers (locals, who both warned us that we should leave the estuary soon) were crossing the bridge and a group of canuers was getting ready to get their boats on the water. We were so happy we made it in time!

For the evening we had campsite booked, which was not on Google maps but which Rosa found via Wikicamps. It was a great find! We cooked pasta with pesto, lentils and mushrooms on the picnic table (a real luxury), while we were curiously eyed by a pheasant (we see these really a lot here, apparently they were once released for hunting, they are really funny animals). For tomorrow there is an easy stretch planned (Crantock to Perranporth), so maybe we can get a bit further than that.

Finally we lived in Treyarnon Bay for a month instead of the 3 months.
/ Végül 1 hónapot éltünk Treyarnon Bay-ben a tervezett 3 hónap helyett.
But it was enough to look round in this area. It’s absolutely gorgeous. And in the right moment it could be really calm.
/De ez is elég volt ahhoz, hogy körbenézzünk a környéken. Egyszerűen gyönyörű. És a megfelelő pillanatokban nagyon nyugodt tud lenni.

A mostly sunny stretch (day 10-12)
Tumblr media
Okay, so I had a whole post typed out about day 10 (twice) but apparently Tumblr lets posts disappear when trying to upload them with a bad internet connection. Anyways, what basically happened is, I walked from just behind Bude to Crackington Haven with one of the steepest ascents of the trip (see video) and nice whether. In Crackington Haven I met Rosa again (quite amazing that she just arrived 10 minutes before me considering it was already around lunchtime) and that night we camped a few km before Boscatle. I was glad to see her again! We immediately tried the duct tape on her dried up shoes to see how it would survive the day. Unfortunately, it didn't.
Tumblr media
The next day we came through Boscatle, a town which we loved. If I had to move to Cornwall (no idea why I would have to but anyways) I would chose Boscatle! It was a small town with one bakery, one book shop, one outdoor shop, a small supermarkt and a YHA that was even cuter than the one we had stayed in. The National Trust (the organization maintaining all the hiking paths) had their office there and the surroundings were beautiful. We kept walking and it got warm and sunny. Was this the gulf stream they had all been telling us about? We could also tell that we were now in Cornwall as the landscape had changed. It was less rugged and the cliffs (if you could still call them that) were more like hills softly crumbling into the sea. The water where we walked now was very blue. We had lunch at a touristy spot (some King Arthur related castle) and as it was Saturday it was quite busy. At night we found a beautiful camping spot next to the river, a few km before Port Isaac.
(First picture is the YHA youth hostel in Boscatle, it was still closed)

The next day was a bit rough for me in the beginning, even though the whether was beautiful. My body felt heavy, maybe it was because zo hadn't had a rest day yet, or just because we were actually climbing quite a lot of hills. After a coffee at a coffee truck that appeared just at the right time in the right place (Port Quin), I was re-energized and we actually had a great rest of the day. We were in a chatty mood, talking a lot with each other and with strangers on the path (It was still the weekend, so quite busy). We met quite a few people who were also doing the coast path, mostly one weekend at a time. Some people were asking if we were wild camping and they were all enthousiastic about our plans. We took the ferry from Rock to Padstow, and had an hour of time to relax afterwards (and to do our obligatory cooldown), before we hopped on the bus to our youth hostel in Treyarnon Bay. We booked two night in this hostel as it is also on the path - the plan is to reach it tomorrow walking after going to the outdoor store in Padstow in the morning to look for new hiking shoes. My feet keep getting wet and the shoes take days to dry, so I think this is really the only option. Altogether this means we only need to pack a daypack tomorrow which is a great foresight!
Tumblr media
PS: Rosa lost one of her zip-pant legs, so now she looks like a 60-year old tourist who JUST LOVES Cornwall.
Tumblr media
PPS: Yes, we can also observe spring spring! While a week ago we still saw frog eggs beneath a layer of snow (see photo), we saw them hatched yesterday! We saw duffadils (Narzissen) all along the way but now we also see some wild flowers here and there, and in the past three days I have seen butterflies and bumblebees.
Tumblr media
Update: I wrote this post on the 19th, today is the the 20st of March and we are going to Newquay with the bus instead of Padstow because they have better outdoor stores there. Not sure if there will be any hiking today.

Here are some of the best days. Of course all the days, I walked with friends or people I met in the way were great too.
Day 7 Newquay to Treyarnon Beach. It’s difficult to pick one day on the South West Coast Path, because there were so many amazing views, but I choose this one because it also ended at the very nice Youth Hostel with a beautiful sunset.
Day 32 Frodsham to Pickmere, this day with beautiful weather and lovely river and canal walking came totally unexpected and was therefore one of the best days.
Day 59 Drymen to Rowadennan was definitely a highlight. Loch Lomond was beautiful and the weather made it even better.
