Leave The World Behind... (Spoilers)
This Sam Esmail Netflix movie is a gem... It doesn't just give us insight into what could be if our nation pushes the reset button... To have us become prey as Americans... and who will be ready. It dishes out some characterizations for societies stereotypes for a demographic.
Julia Roberts: Amanda, scene of her listening to R&B in the car (Blackstreet). You can tell she used to ride black dick in college. When George comes to the door the racism sets in... the man is wearing a suit with his daughter as a companion but FEAR sets in. Can't trust, doesn't believe black excellence can achieve this house even the expensive car. Finally that fear dissipates and leads to her wanting to fuck him down while her husband is outside.
Mahershala Ali: George, the docile negro. To acquire in this world one must play by a set of rules. It's evident he's done so. Non combative, don't rock the boat and accommodate. When his daughter talks to him while they're sleeping in the basement after the family returns... it's eye opening to his submissiveness. Are you prepared to stand strong for us because her strength will not tolerate his weakness.
Ethan Hawke: Clay, King Carefree... smoked all his brain cells away since his teenage years that he only functions with a wife assist. Hasn't thought for himself in ages.
Myha'la Herrold: Ruth, the problematic black woman. Her assertiveness is an issue. Dominance makes people uneasy. Honesty and intelligence seen as attitude. The hair wet commentary, can't just exist. Fast, have you ever fucked your students, hyper sexualized.
Charlie Evans: Archie... Grade A little prick with the weakest gene code. Killed the role of a young gamer, horny without a AK-47.
Vanessa Aspillaga: Salvadora, the housekeeper that no one ever listens to when speaking facts because somehow society believes speaking Spanish is a lack of intelligence and/or subhuman.
Kevin Bacon: Danny, straight shooter, military ready... but a big softy.
Farrah Mackenzie: Rose/Rosie... to be seen and not heard. Creating a bubble that you live in with blinders is a happy place. It's not just about technology but a way of life. It leads to selfishness where even a simple thought of caring about an outside entity is foreign, alien. Quintessential white woman.
It's giving...

Ramblin' Man - Film Review: You Can't Stay Here ★★★1/2
Tumblr media
The new queer cinema of the 1990s gets reborn courtesy of one of its OGs, Todd Verow. With his micro-budget new thriller, You Can’t Stay Here, co-written by longtime collaborator Jim Dwyer, that raw, confrontational, punk sensibility feels like a breath of fresh air in our current stale, over-processed cinematic environment. Harkening back to his work on Frisk, which put Verow on the map in 1995, the film plays like a mashup of that title along with Cruising and Blow-Up.
Guillermo Diaz stars as Rick, a photographer, who finds himself drawn to the Ramble, a busy Central Park gay cruising spot circa 1993 in New York City. Rather than engaging in hookups himself, Rick prefers to hide behind his camera taking pictures of the many sexual scenarios on display. Before you can say “Antonioni”, Rick has spotted something nefarious going on in his photos, an ominous guy in a trench coat. On a return visit to the park, Rick witnesses the man known as Adam (Justin Ivan Brown) committing a brutal murder. That he presents as an all-seeing, all-knowing vampire armed with a knife and a lethal bottle of poppers, serves as an apt metaphor for the AIDS crisis decimating the gay community. The dangerous game of cat and mouse between Rick and Adam takes up the bulk of the running time, along with a burgeoning relationship with one of the Ramble regulars named Hale, played sweetly by Becca Blackwell.
While scary and suspenseful, the real heart of the film lies with Rick’s internal struggles. He appears to fear intimacy with the story serving as a journey towards accepting himself. He shares a son with his ex-wife Samantha (a wonderfully grounded Karina Arroyave), who caught him with another man one day in their apartment. He’s also tending to his ailing mother, an excellent Marlene Forte, who doesn’t hold back when spewing homophobic comments directed at her son. His demanding boss Wren, comically played by Vanessa Aspillaga, adds additional stress to his life.
I saw this film as a course correction to Cruising, which only vaguely alluded to Al Pacino’s sexual awakening as he hunted down a gay serial killer. In Verow’s film! he addresses similar themes far more explicitly. Bonus points for no dialogue like, “Hips or lips?” Verow, like the late William Friedkin, doesn’t shy away from graphic sexuality but the gay male gaze adds an authenticity Cruising lacked.
Much of the credit for the success of the film goes to Diaz, who delivers a quiet, soulful performance with all of the horrors of the world right there in his empathetic eyes. No stranger to the new queer cinema and low-budget 90s films himself, with appearances in such seminal movies of the era such as Stonewall, Party Girl, I Think I Do, and Nowhere, it’s wonderful to see Diaz embracing his roots. He’s had a string of larger scale appearances in Weeds, Scandal, and Bros, all wonderful, but it’s exciting that he sought out Verow as a collaborator due to his desire to do something with more of an edge. Ryan Murphy has dedicated his career to lifting up queer voices and it’s lovely to see an actor of Diaz’s caliber doing the same. More of that, please!
This film will have its detractors who can’t get past its low budget production values, but in its own scrappy way, this film succeeds. I especially loved its John Carpenter-esque synth score by Greg Sabo which rides a fine line between pulse-pounding and campiness. Same goes for the film itself, which shrewdly personifies the terrors of its era while also possessing a little of that DIY John Waters humor. Add the beauty of a lost soul finding tenderness and you have a film that stands out amongst more forgettable fare.

I enjoy a ‘double joke’ --- in which you’d get the punchline...then another punchline (closely after). In the case of the scenes surrounding the inciting incident (Becky being let go from her job), it revolved around the shirt.
The whole ‘I accept’ reveal was the first (we don’t see what’s on the shirt until Becky starts covering it up with her jacket...with the plan to reveal it later). Then the green shirts of her team to congratulate her...is the second.
If you’d ask me to pick a genre that JJ would do in the next 3 years. It would be The Romantic Comedy. Being reminded that this was actually a Bad Robot production (very unexpected based on what they’ve been doing during those years)...yet....it’s a no brainer. Abrams has the chops early on (come on! Felicity!) and having him as a consultant works really well (I really enjoyed the commentary...and hearing the bits of input that made the film better).

HIGHLIGHT:
INT. DAYBREAK CONFERENCE ROOM - DAWN
BECKY walks into the conference room, an armload of papers. LENNY in tow.
BECKY Well, I met Paul.
LENNY You talked to him alone? I told you to come see me first.
BECKY I know, but...
She shrugs and shakes off the memory.
BECKY What was I gonna do? (To the rest of the staff) Hi, hi, everyone. Hi, I...I'm Becky.
The rest of the staff are seated. Not really rolling out the red carpet. It's just a matter of time before the revolving door of EPs spits out another one.
ERNIE is on the phone and gives her a small smile and a nod.
COLLEEN Oh, God, look who's here. I mean, not here.
The staff chuckle.
COLLEEN Ha ha ha. McVee. So Shocking, huh?
BECKY shifts in her chair and looks around.
LENNY Yeah, well, Mr. McVee doesn't always come to these things.
She turns to the staff member right outside the conference room.
BECKY Oh, um, could you tell Paul that we need him please? Thanks. (to staff) Um, okay, so let's just dive in...
She gives them a big smile and mimics the rising sun with her hands.
BECKY ...shall we? Uh...
She glances at her notes.
BECKY Who wants to start?
One of the producers raises his hand.
COOKING PRODUCER Tomorrow, Rocco DiSpirito wants to make lasagna. I told him we that last week with the Barefoot Contessa, but he's insisting. What do I do?
BECKY starts to make a note but is quickly interrupted.
FASHION PRODUCER For the segment on miniskirts, do you want all size models...
LISA For next week, I want to do a piece on juice cleanses. All the celebs are doing them and they have amazing powers of rejuvinization .
BECKY studies her while concentrating on what she's saying.
LISA My idea is that I get a juice cleanse and then we can, like, measure my toxins---
SET DECORATOR For the Carville interview...I'm sorry, Lisa, do you want the living room set or the stools?
BOOKER ABC says we can't have Eva Longoria until two weeks after she does GMA. What do we do?
PRODUCER 5 On psychic animals, would you prefer a parakeet or an iguana?
ERNIE I'd like to do a piece on weathervanes. They are fascinating.
BECKY turns to ERNIE who is holding up two weathervanes: an archer and a rooster.
ERNIE Like, did you know the word 'vane' comes from the Old English 'fana'...
BECKY nods. Taking in more information.
ERNIE ...which means 'flag' or 'weathercock'?
PRODUCER 6 Friday, for cooking with squash, inside or on the plaza?
PRODUCER 7 Okay, they're offering us the third lead in the new Patrick Dempsey movie. Do you want him?
PRODUCER 8 Great story out of Tampa about a retirement account scandal.
She turns to the producer
PRODUCER 8 But we got to move quick. Should we send a team or just local talent?
BECKY strains to keep up as dialogue starts to overlap.
SOUND ENGINEER Mixing board in the control room's on the fritz. 10 grand to fix it.
PRODUCER 9 For the piece on baby food, do we want an actual baby...
More overlapping chatter
PRODUCER 9 ...and if so, white, black, Hispanic, Asian...
BECKY stares at her notes.
PRODUCER 9 ...blond hair, brown hair, teeth, or no teeth?
BOOKER I have a black baby at home.
The overlapping chatter is converging as one...and BECKY is attempting to single out content with no success. LENNY rubs his eye.
BECKY I'm sorry, I can't hear what you're saying. I...
PAUL walks in.
PAUL Hello! Hi, hi. Does someone wanna tell me why I had to log off ---------------.com for this?
The staff look at him with contempt and groan.
LISA A------
The room is quiet. PAUL looks at BECKY expectantly.
BECKY turns to the COOKING PRODUCER
BECKY Tell Rocco if he insists on making lasagna, he will be bumped. (to the fashion producer) Yes, all size models, but skirts not too short.Toxins?
She turns to the group.
BECKY Toxins? Who said that?
LISA holds up a finger.
BECKY Yeah, they can't be measured. And 'rejuvinization'? Not a word.
LISA (mouths) Okay
BECKY (to BOOKER) Tell Longoria's people that she can't plug her next film...
Staffers start to smile and nod as BECKY takes the reigns.
BECKY ...unless we get her within a week of GMA.
the BOOKER nods.
BECKY whips to PRODUCER 5
BECKY Parakeet. (to Ernie) Ernie, weathercock? Seriously? (to Producer 6) The plaza for squash. (to Producer 7) I want Patrick Dempsey.
PRODUCER 7 nods. the BOOKER has his head down, shaking it, smiling --- in disbelief on how Becky has handled the situation.
BECKY Tell his people we'll run him in the first hour and he can talk about whatever his thing is. (to Producer 8) Tampa Bay, definitely local talent. (to Sound Engineer) And we've got to fix that sound board. Find that 10 grand in the budget somewhere.
The SOUND ENGINEER nods then BECKY gets an idea.
BECKY The hair and makeup numbers, those were too high. So, Colleen, could you share your hair person with Lisa on her days?
COLLEEN I'd like to talk to you about that.
BECKY Great. (to Producer 9) Asian baby, no teeth. Lesbian parents.
PRODUCER 9 Oh, okay.
BECKY looks around the room.
BECKY Did I miss anything?
The staff talk amongst themselves as PAUL turns to exit.
BECKY Oh, Paul!
He turns back.
BECKY Uh...You're fired.
PAUL smiles.
PAUL You're adorable.
BECKY Fired!
She gives him a look of contempt. No jokes here.
The rest of the staff look on...silence...jaws dropped. The FASHION PRODUCER raises his phone up to take a photo of PAUL's reaction.
the BOOKER leans in and smiles as they both watch the screen. CLICK! Then laugh as the moment has been documented. Some staff cover their reactions. LISA is surprised at the turn of events.
PRODUCER 5 and PRODUCER 7 smile at BECKY in awe.
BECKY I'm sorry. That was unprofessional.
the FASHION producer raises his hands and bows to BECKY. The staff start clapping and a couple wolf whistle.
ERNIE however is unsure of what's going down.
--------
My verdict of the film: 6/10
Link to the timestamp commentary: TBA (It’s likely that I saw it for the first time...before making them)

A JOURNAL FOR JORDAN (2021)
Starring Michael B. Jordan, Chanté Adams, Jalon Christian, Robert Wisdom, Johnny M. Wu, Tamara Tunie, Gregory Sanon, Cleveland Berto, Nicholas G. Sims, Vanessa Aspillaga, Susan Pourfar, Joey Brooks, Spencer Squire, Annabel O'Hagan, Doris McCarthy, Lauren Yaffe, Stephen Sherman, Nate Luis Silva, Samuel Caleb Walker and Vincent Tumeo.
Screenplay by Virgil Williams.
Directed by Denzel Washington.
Distributed by Columbia Pictures. 131 minutes. Rated PG-13.
Strangely enough, the movie A Journal for Jordan barely mentions the titular journal and it doesn’t spend all that much time on the character of Jordan, either.
Based on the 2008 memoir A Journal for Jordan: A Story of Love and Honor by journalist and publisher Dana Canedy – which she wrote for her son to tell him about his father and the journal which he wrote for their child while serving in Iraq, where he was killed in action.
Since Jordan was not yet born when First Sergeant Charles Monroe King (Michael B. Jordan) died, the book was trying to explain to the boy about how his parents met, how they fell in love, the hardships they faced, why they never got married (they were planning on marrying when he got back from Iraq), and how excited he was to become a father.
Therefore, the great majority of the film focuses on the relationship of Canedy (played in a star-making turn by Chanté Adams) and Sgt. King. In fact, much of the film, bouncing backwards and forwards in time, plays like a bittersweet romantic comedy – which honestly may not be doing this story complete justice – but it does humanize the characters.
In fact, the whole idea of the journal full of life lessons for a son he would never meet is barely even hinted at for a huge part of the movie. Although the death is shown right at the start and the film is framed as a mother telling the story of their love to their son (side note, some of the details she shares seem a little inappropriate to tell a young boy), the entirety of the first hour and a half or more of the movie is just about the relationship.
Sadly, although Jordan (the actor, not the son) has limitless charisma and charm, his character is a bit of a one-dimensional blank slate – a good, honorable, loving man with six pack abs. Adams’ lead character is allowed more nuance, but the actress also probably brings more to the woman than is shown in the script.
The film has a well-earned sentimentality – the ending reminded me of a similarly heartfelt military tribute in the devastating but long-forgotten 1990s film In Country – which pays off the slightly transparent attempts to pluck at the heartstrings which have preceded the climax.
A Journal for Jordan is directed by actor Denzel Washington, but with little of craft and personality which suffused his earlier excursions into direction like Fences, The Great Debaters and Antwone Fisher. A Journal for Jordan feels like it could have been directed by pretty much anyone and come out about the same. For the first time, Washington feels more like a gun for hire than an artiste sculpting the storyline. This is not to say that Washington does a bad job – just that it is a little pedestrian for him.
In fact, A Journal for Jordan just slightly has the vibe of a made for cable movie planned for The Hallmark Channel or Lifetime.
And yet, as I noted above, in the end it mostly works. The epiphany will legitimately give you a lump in the throat. Sometimes that is all a movie wants or needs to do.
