Mel’s Big Fantasy Place-Name Reference

So I’ve been doing lots of D&D world-building lately and I’ve kind of been putting together lists of words to help inspire new fantasy place names. I figured I’d share. Patimban New City masterplan design

Global, interdisciplinary design consultancy, BDP, has been appointed to design a 528-hectare, mixed-use, waterfront development masterplan in Patimban New City, Indonesia.

7th of February 2022 – Commissioned by JICA for the West Java Government, a multidisciplinary team from BDP, Nippon Koei and AMO (Aarunya Mitra Optima) has created a new city-scale development plan on a flood-prone site, between mangrove forests and Patimban port in Subang, West Java. The sustainable masterplan aims to unlock the commercial potential of the area and create a resilient, ecological and prosperous waterfront city which promotes a symbiotic relationship between its communities, local ecology and the built environment.

The plan adopts a forward-thinking, city-wide green infrastructure network strategy featuring components which promote sustainable communities and enhance biodiversity. Interventions include rain gardens, green roofs, attenuation ponds and tanks, bio-retention swales, wetland filtration beds, open parks, porous hard surfaces, floating planting and aeration systems. Combined with conservation and community stewardship opportunities identified with the local authorities, the scheme will holistically enhance the ecology and flood-resiliency of the site.

Jeremy Farrington, principal and Singapore studio lead at BDP, said: “Patimban New City will be a leading example of a sustainable maritime city that demonstrates innovative urban development and progressive placemaking. Urban development needs to address challenges posed by climate change and habitat loss and we are delighted to be a part of a project that celebrates a new standard of waterfront living in Indonesia, where communities and nature will thrive, side by side.”

“It is this kind of innovative masterplan with the incorporation of green infrastructure interventions that is stimulating more sustainable design across the globe, reducing the risks of climate change and environmental degradation and ultimately improving quality of life for all. By incorporating city-scale green infrastructure into this plan, we will create a beautiful and natural place to live, work and visit whilst offering sensitive and intelligent solutions for better storm water management and creative health and wellbeing programmes for the community. This plan will revitalise the area into a rich and engaging place that echoes the biodiversity of waterfront Indonesia.”

Indonesia has planned the development and upgrade of several ports and port ‘hubs’ across the country. Patimban port was identified as one such area that would be developed to create new communities and to include measures that mitigate against, and adapt, to the effects of climate change. BDP’s plan is also part of a wider strategic redevelopment that will shift the logistics pressures from industrial areas of Indonesia to under-developed locations across the archipelago.

What Is the Source of the Don River?

Perhaps the question we receive most frequently on the blog is “Where does the Don River start?”

Since we know that the Don River flows south toward the lake, the answer must lie north of the city. This is where you’ll find Oak Ridges Moraine, a long ridge of sand, silt and gravel deposits that forms a 200-kilometre band of green space from Orangeville and the Niagara Escarpment in the west, to Trenton and the Trent River in the east.

From its headwaters in the moraine, the Don River travels 38 kilometres south where it empties into the Toronto harbour. Not only does the Oak Ridges Moraine feed the Don River, but six other watersheds in the Toronto area originate along the southern margin of the Oak Ridges Moraine and follow a similar southeasterly course to Lake Ontario.

How does the Oak Ridges Moraine work?

The Oak Ridges Moraine acts as Ontario’s rain barrel, recharging aquifers and discharging water into our waterways. Whereas on most soils, rain and snowmelt run off into streams, rivers and ponds, the Oak Ridges Moraine is able to absorb a great deal of water due to its composition of permeable sand and gravel. This allows water to seep down into the moraine’s sandy core, hundreds of metres deep where the water is purified and filtered through sand and gravel aquifers.

As the aquifers are regenerated, tiny headwater streams bubble up out of the ground along the ridge, sending clean, cool water out through seeps, swales and springs. The water is then discharged into the headwaters of over 65 watercourses flowing north and south of the moraine.

The ridgeline that runs along the centre of the Oak Ridges Moraine marks the divide between the waters that flow north and south. Headwater streams flowing south drain into Lake Ontario, while waters flowing north feed into Lakes Scugog, Simcoe or Georgian Bay (Lake Huron).

Since the ridgeline represents the headwaters for several watersheds, it also marks the boundary for different Conservation Authorities (nine in total), which are all demarcated according to watershed boundaries. Within the boundaries of each of the nine Conservation Authorities (shown on the map below), all water flows or drains toward one river or toward a group of rivers.

So why is the Oak Ridges Moraine important?

The Oak Ridges Moraine is the largest concentration of headwater streams in the Greater Toronto Area and is an essential water recharge and discharge source in Ontario. It sustains the health of several watersheds and directly provides drinking water to over 250,000 people.

The moraine also sustains countless green spaces and diverse habitats that are essential for regionally and provincially rare plant and animal species. It’s home to upland forests, significant wetlands and is one of six recognized areas for forest bird diversity in Southern Ontario.
