1. Season 1 MSR or season 9 MSR?

Well, I do love the MSR we finally get in The Truth, but I have to go with season 1 MSR because watching those baby agents fall for each other and learn to trust each other is delightful.

8. David or Gillian?

I’ve definitely followed GA’s career more closely.

25. List some season 1 MSR headcanons.

I feel like most of my headcanons come from 20+ years of reading fic so I don’t think I have anything original to add… I do think that Scully had a little crush on him at first - she thinks he’s cute but also brilliant and fascinating and she’s intrigued by the work. I think Mulder likes her immediately too but not in that way - he thinks she’s smart and comes to respect her and what she brings to the work, and likes working with her, but he tries to keep his distance even as she sneaks her way into his heart. I love what season 1 does to slowly develop the solid foundation of their partnership that the rest of the series builds off of. Despite what we hear later in the series about them never really talking I think that they do in season 1 - Scully at least is more open at that point, and I just imagine the hundreds of hours they spend getting to know each other in car rides and stakeouts and long days in the office and quarantines over the course of that first year.

45. Why did you first start watching The X-Files?

Sometime in the year before FTF came out my dad and sister and I decided to check txf out - I think the show was really at its pop culture peak at that point, it was everywhere. We didn’t get the Fox channel so we rented a vhs tape from our local video store - they couldn’t fit whole seasons on vhs tapes so they would release a selected set of episodes. We made the mistake of picking season 3 mytharc episodes Piper Maru and Apocrypha and I remember thinking the black oil stuff was cool but being completely confused by Scully’s plot given that we had none of the background about Melissa’s death - it just wasn’t a good jumping in point. So then I didn’t go see FTF in the theater (a regret to this day!) and we didn’t watch any more until my sister and were visiting my grandmother that summer and caught a few MOTW episodes on tv and I saw Pusher and became completely obsessed.

50. Any X-File blogs you would recommend?

I feel like a lot of xf blogs are less active these days but @dailytxf is a good source of new and reblogged gifs.

I find certain smells very very southing, lavender is my favorite scent of all! Certain smells do give me sensory overloads such as cheese or syrup, really weird but it’s true! LGBTQ X-Files Headcanons Because Someone Asked

Fox Mulder:

Bi and trans icon

The first person he told was Samantha

She accepted him immediately as her big brother and told him he should name himself Fox (it was her favorite animal at the time)

He was going to make his name William Mulder Jr. up until she disappeared, in which he actually decided to make his first name Fox (he misses her 🥺)

Came out to his parents sometime in high school, both took it badly

Bill was hella transphobic—he was already pretty shitty to Mulder but this added a whole new layer to it

Teena was more passive aggressive about it but still made withering comments about how she “lost two daughters now”

Some high school friends (*chants* PHOEBE AND GIMBLE PHOEBE AND GIMBLE) helped Mulder start T and change his legal name on government documents before he left for Oxford

Mulder wanted to go stealth while he was there but came out to Phoebe

When they broke up, she outed him to everyone

Things got so bad that he almost dropped out

Mulder joined the FBI, excited at the prospect of knowing no one and being able to go exclusively by his last name

He was somewhat happy of his solitude in the basement—no one really looked into him past his spooky nature, so no one could find out he was trans

Since Samantha, Scully was the first person who was truly accepting of who he really was

Got top surgery sometime before Colony

Definitely fell in love with Scully right after reading her profile skrjnwkdjwka

Mulder and Krycek were definitely an item for a hot sec until Krycek went evil

Mulder is 500% faithful to Scully but kinda had a crush on Doggett for a little bit

Mulder just wants to be a better dad than Bill 🥺🥺🥺

Mulder helped Byers realize he was trans!!! More on that later though

Dana Scully:

A bi queen

Definitely experimented in college and had a couple girlfriends there and through med school

Ending up breaking up with a girl she was really close with because Scully’s job was just putting too much strain on their relationship

It was really hard on her and made her swear off serious relationships for a long time

She thought Mulder was adorable from the moment she saw him but was really scared of actually developing feelings for him so she pushed it down

And kept pushing it down until she finally realized Mulder was never going to hurt her and actually let him in

I’m just ranting about MSR now oops

100% faithful to Mulder but thought Reyes was super hot

Scully is just a distinguished bi idk what else to say

Walter Skinner:

You can’t adopt THAT MANY LGBT agents if you’re not LGBT yourself, right?

Definitely bisexual

Grew up in a really conservative family and didn’t even consider it an option until he moved out

Skinner was attracted to a lot of guys in his squad in Vietnam but he thought it was just because there were no women around

(Spoiler alert: it wasn’t)

Skinner fell in love with John “Kitten” James and he fell hard

Absolutely did everything possible to protect that man

He was terrified of his feelings though and pushed them down, eventually starting to resent his best friend for making him feel things he couldn’t understand

When Kitten got infected by that gas, Skinner put his values over the man he loved, not just because he thought it was the right thing to do, but because he was terrified that he might be bi

He has regretted it ever since

Married his wife after the war and had a pretty good relationship until he became too consumed with his work

Their breakup was really hard on him and he delved even more into his work

Sometime after Avatar (maybe by season 5 or 6), Skinner meets a really lovely man and that man becomes his boyfriend

It’s really hard at first, but the guy helps Skinner to open up and allow himself to be okay with who he really is

They make time for each other outside of work and are really happy together!

Skinner’s boyfriend is 100% okay with the fact that Skinner has basically adopted all these agents

Skinner is everyone’s dad!!! No exceptions

John Byers:

Trans man!!!!

Discovered it pretty late in life, like he knew earlier but he Repressed it

First person he ever came out to was Mulder (as in my fic 😌)

Lots of internalized transphobia in this man but Mulder and the Lone Gunmen really helped him break out of that

Langly and Frohike obviously went with him to get his first T shot and chanted “MAN JUICE” while it happened (scaring a lot of the nurses)

Met Susanne before he transitioned so seeing her again in Three of a Kind was a little terrifying for him

She accepts him though and is a bi icon herself

Byers wears suits so much because they make him feel really validated

Ringo Langly:

Non-binary and gay!! Langly uses any pronouns (gonna stick to he/him for this list to keep things simple though)

Grew up pretty unaware about gender as a whole, just living his life

Moving away from home to a city was huge for him, he started going to gay bars and really realized that he was gay

Eventually started to experiment with his gender, using different pronouns etc., and found out he was non-binary!

Came out to Frohike shortly after learning Frohike was bi (more on that later)

Goes by Ringo because it’s somewhat gender neutral

He isn’t dysphoric very often but when he is it’s very hard for him to cope, Byers and Frohike are always there to support him and help however possible though

Langly gets way more dates than Frohike and loves to brag about it

Melvin Frohike:

We stan one funky little bi king

HE WAS AT STONEWALL I’LL DIE ON THIS HILL

Frohike had a mega crush on Mulder when he first met him and it persisted all the way until he met Scully

And then when he met Doggett he crushed on him too

Frohike is just kind of a hopeless romantic okay I love him

Absolutely bonds with Scully and they always debate which celebrity is hotter while they get more and more drunk

John Doggett

GAY MAN

Doggett was really repressed for a lot of his life, not because he thought his family would hate him for being gay but mostly because of his environment

(He was a drama kid though)

The military REALLY repressed him and thoroughly fucked him up

It wasn’t until he met Reyes that he started to accept himself more

At first Reyes being a lesbian totally freaked him out and he was really upset, leading to a huge strain on their friendship, but one night he broke down and told her he was pretty sure he was gay

Reyes really helped him through everything, especially his divorce from his wife and the loss of his son

Doggett eventually came out to his dad, who was super accepting

It took Doggett a long time to be comfortable enough to date but he started and met a really great guy, one who he’s now married to

One day he mentioned his boyfriend in passing and the rest of the Spooky Squad totally flipped out because they had no idea he was gay

Doggett just straight-faced “I didn’t think it was relevant?”

Sings musical theater songs in the office when no one else is there

Monica Reyes:

A lesbian

There isn’t a straight bone in her body have you SEEN her???

Absolutely crushed on Scully for the longest time at first, totally backed off when she realized she was involved with Mulder

Total mlm/wlw solidarity with Doggett

Reyes is super comfortable with her sexuality

I’m convinced that she’s married and she and her wife live in the same neighborhood as Doggett and his husband

Running out of brain power at this point but I just love her so much??? Mwah

Alex Krycek:

Gay rat

Everything he did against Mulder and Scully was fueled by spite at his ex-boyfriend Mulder

Halloween Card (Dad!Fox Mulder x Reader)

Okay so imagine Fox is having an awful week at work, Skinner is on his case and May (your daughter) is just over a year old and has fallen out of a sleeping schedule so he’s tired as well as being tired with work

Not even Scully is cheering him up so u know it’s bad- Scully calls you basically daily at this point of a debrief of how he’s been today

You're worried about him and you’re pulling out the big stops to try and make him feel better (having May wear the cutest clothes he has bought her, watching basketball games, keeping a bowl of sunflower seeds on the table for him to snack on) and THEN there’s the nsfw stuff obviously

He’s obviously a great dad and a great partner but you’ve been together for this long at this point that you know- something isn’t right

SO, obviously Halloween is his favourite, so you spend the day with May making a cute Halloween card craft for him

May’s handprint turns into a spooky spider and she scribbles on the page in orange and black crayon which is obviously very spooky

You put her in her pumpkin onesie and as soon as Fox walks through the door he basically melts- she’s too cute. What bad mood??? It’s gone

She has the Halloween card clutched in her lil chubby hand and she babbles at Fox as he walks in and basically chucks the card at him with a huge smile on her face

It reads: “happy Halloween daddy, I love you so much. Love May” VERY SIMPLE but cmon like you thought of it off the cuff but Fox doesn’t CARE he’s welling up (he’s cried at Father’s Day and Christmas cards from May and you’re pretty sure he’ll do it with every card he receives from her)

He takes her from you and presses kisses to her cheeks and says to her “You’re so smart, my smart baby, making a card for me!!”

As Fox is kissing her she’s giggling and babbling at him and he smiles at you and thanks you and you’re like “???? She wrote it, nothing to do with me”

And Agent Mulder Became Fox

I know what I said about posting two fics at once but also sometimes you watch episodes with people and you get ideas. This came from watching Ascension with my fellow beans yesterday but we noticed how Mulder was Agent Mulder in this episode and Fox in One Breath and I thought I’d write a fic about it. Also @baronessblixen came up with the headcanon that Maggie fed Mulder so I borrowed that and put it in the fic.

He has no idea how often Scully would go around to her mother’s. There was the odd phone call in the office or on the road but the first time Mulder had ever met Mrs Scully in person was when her daughter was missing.

(and wow, what a meeting that was, showing up with Dana’s blood on his fingertips)

“Have you eaten?” Mrs Scully asks.

He’s sat on the worn couch, surrounded by wallpaper that has a floral pattern, and photographs of the various Scully children- two boys, two girls.

Mulder shrugs in answer to the older woman’s question.

In truth, he hasn’t, not really. Coffee, the odd bagel. Time spent not looking for Scully, not thinking about Scully was time wasted.

“I’ll make you something,” she says smiling and exiting the room.

It became a thing after that. Every weekend Mulder would make the drive to Mrs Scully’s, she would make him dinner and they would talk.

About Scully most times. Stories of when she was younger, of telling them she was going to be a nurse originally and then nurse paved way for doctor when somebody told her that nurse was a female profession and a doctor male- she wanted to smash that stereotype and prove them wrong. Mulder smiles at that, expecting nothing less.

He learned about Scully through her mother, through the photographs on the walls and mantel pieces, a timeline of her life from baby to adult. Maybe he was intruding, if Scully had wanted him to know about this stuff she would have told him herself.

But Scully- Dana- was very closed off, he began to learn. Even as a child she kept things to herself, never trusted anyone enough to carry those thoughts and feelings closest to her. Only her father had ever got that near and he had almost ruined it by not agreeing with her decision to join the FBI.

Their conversations sometimes where about Mulder and his life and family. He kept it short, not divulging too much information at once because this woman had the perfect life and perfect children, how could she ever understand someone so imperfect?

“Fox,” she says. There a month into this arraignment and it’s the first time she’s called him by his name. Agent Mulder is how she referred to him, Fox is so alien yet so soothing emitting from her mouth, the same way it is when Dana called him that.

So he doesn’t go off on his usual mantra, no ‘Please, call me Mulder’, it is simply a look.

“No, I was just sounding it out,” she says. “It’s…unusual.”

Maybe she sees him tense, prepares himself for the ridicule that has often accompanied his name- the teasing in school, Oxford professors and higher agents of the Bureau telling him he’ll never get far with a name like Fox.

“I wish I had the courage to name my children something like that.”

Mulder looks to the photographs on top of the fire. Three out of four first names he doesn’t know.

Maybe what you called them was for the best, he thinks.

“I’m still having that dream.”

His attention to brought back to Mrs Scully and how she looks at him with hope in her eyes. What was it that he said to her? It’s probably scarier when you stop having the dream. Don’t you think?

“That’s good,” he says looking out of the window. It’s dark out now, where did the time go? He looks up and he can see the stars. Ascending…ascending to the stars.

“It means she’s still out there.”

his parents were high school sweethearts and married just before they attended college at harvard together, securing careers at the kennedy space center.

jeremy fischman sr dies under mysterious circumstances in a lab accident and ellen is twenty-eight and left alone to raise baby jem. things only go downhill from here. jeremy was the love of her life and she becomes obsessed with his disappearance and all kinds of conspiracy theories, blows a bunch of her money. it doesn’t take long for her to be fired, savings blown on expensive equipment or sunk into internet hoaxes

they move to a rough neighborhood in gainesville where jem grows up. he likes jem, not jeremy, jeremy is his father. he’s never experienced the perfect life his parents used to live, the white picket fence, the shiny space shuttles. he’s only got this, and honestly, he doesn’t hate it.

the neighborhood’s rough, but there’s a lot of fun characters, and his mom is practically his best friend – aside from his next-door neighbor, NOAH WARD.

jem’s mom does odd hacking jobs from the comfort of their home. some of them are shadier than others, she makes connections with a lot of private investigators in town and looks into people’s cheating husbands and tracks down birth parents and missing people. she does pro bono work too, a kindhearted woman, she can never say no to those in need, even if she’s not so fortunate herself. as jem gets older, he learns everything that he knows from her

every summer vacation growing up, jem and his mom would pack their bags and make home in a camper van, traveling across the country. in some ways, this was great mother-son bonding, but this wasn’t why they did it. his mom never gave up looking for the truth about her husband, but hacking into secure, top-secret government databases is nothing like hacking into the gainesville city hall, it’s hard work, and they travel around the country methodically so that their signal cannot be traced. every summer they get close, but never close enough.

when noah moves away for college, jem stays home. he’s not comfortable leaving his mom.

he keeps up with hacking jobs and keeping up with looking for his dad on the side. he doesn’t think they’ll ever find him, his mom holds out hope but jem is eighteen years old and a bit more jaded now, he figures the guy’s just really dead and well, the conspiracy of it all matters less and less when he knows that either way, he’s still grown up without him.

a lot of jem’s social life is online, whether it’s friends from hacking forums or via soundcloud.

when he’s not hacking, he’s making music. his passions of technology and music mix and he creates his own beats and soundcloud, mashing together songs, and even putting together a popular meme track or two used on tiktok.

it’s actually a bit lucrative, but that’s not why he does it. doesn’t even really use his name, catch him on soundcloud…username? uncutjems.

every time he and his mom get close to finding his dad, there’s just more to do, and it’s almost like someone KNOWS what they’re doing.

jem’s right about that – he is being watched. since noah’s admission to gallagher, recruiters have been aware of the boy who taught her everything she knew.

when gallagher makes the choice to start allowing male students, an agent shows up at his door offering him a once in a lifetime chance at a free education.

jem doesn’t have any strong ambition to go into espionage, per say, but he won’t say no to advanced classes taught by some of the world’s brightest minds – and a chance to reunite with his best friend. however, he hasn’t stopped trying to get into the government’s records and still has ambitions of going into music production.

PERSONALITY.

INTUITIVE. jem has a natural intuition about things and he trusts himself and his own opinions about things. i suppose you could perceive this as confidence, but honestly he’s just really SMART, good at absorbing facts even subconsciously and putting things together about people or situations. in a sense, he has a habit of being correct – he definitely comes off as intelligent, even though his grades in school have never been very good. he just has different priorities.

LOYAL. make a friend out of jem and you have a friend for life, he’ll take your secrets to the grade and he’s pretty trustworthy. he’s the type of guy that gets along with pretty much everyone but he has a few select, close friends because he is somewhat intentional about the company that he keeps. he’s friendly and kind, but he keeps his inner circle of people he trusts close and somewhat exclusive.

PROTECTIVE. kind of has papa bear energy, you know ? maybe the dad friend of your friend group, but in a laid back way, he might not seem like he’s the type to spring into action but call someone close to him a rude name and you’ll see his fist coming at your face. he’s protective but not possessive, i guess is how i would describe it, but i think he gives pretty good advice as well because he’s really hoping the best for ppl.

MALINGERING. jem is kind of a SLACKER! at least, that’s what teachers have called him in the past, he simply does not dream of labor. he’s just kind of doing his own thing, will fake sick to skip a class, whatever else, even though he likes producing music he doesn’t really have a great ambition for anything, spy or otherwise. as long as he has a good computer setup, then he’s fucking chilling.

MOODY. he’s laid back to the umpteenth degree when it comes to work or obligations, but he does have sort of mood swings, i guess he’s the sort of person that you would describe as grumpy at times ? definitely NOT a morning person and when he’s in an off mood, he can be hard to interact with or snap out of.

DISORGANIZED. the sort of person to throw his stuff across the bed or leave piles of clothes on the floor to deal with later, maybe he’s not your favorite roommate for this reason. he has a habit of losing things that he just set down or whatever, things like that.

HEADCANONS.

tbh you can think of him like...beca in pitch perfect ! he’s here bc he was offered a free education and he’s cool with that, but he’d rather be pursuing a future in music. a damn good hacker, though, and the gallagher recruiters are hoping that with some ‘ambition’ he’ll want to work for the government someday.

played baseball throughout middle and high school and he’s fairly athletic – he can get pretty competitive when he plays, it kind of brings out a side in him that most people don’t expect to see because he’s fairly chilled out most of the time

a boss with a slingshot. there is no reason for this, but he had one as a kid and he used to chase squirrels away from the bird feeders outside their home. he has great eyesight and his aim is great, but it’s literally the only weapon he’s proficient in

he’s not tiktok famous for his face, but he has two tiktok famous songs...he’s made like 12k in record deals for selling the rights, it’s just the kind of shit that he does goofing around in music software and he has a good ear for what is going to be catchy

he’s NOT a morning person, definitely a late night kind of guy, will stay up until all hours just fucking around on the computer and then he’ll sleep until 1 or 2pm, at least. getting up for morning classes is a struggle for them and he has slept through them on occasion.

funky sweaters, crazy socks, fun-patterned shirts, he dresses a bit like a circus tent at times, but you can’t say that he doesn’t have style – he dresses well, but it’s like he’s stepped out of a 90s cartoon or something

if he makes u a playlist he either wants to be ur friend so fucking bad or he’s head over heels in love with u

really likes making new things with old technology, he loves taking the macguyver courses and learning new things and he’s actually built his own computer and a lot of his own musical instruments

usually has a couple bandaids because he’s a bit accident prone or can lose his focus when working in the lab. when he gets in his own head while working on a project, he literally cannot hear anything else – sort of selective hearing

likes fucking around with spray paint, if he can, he’s got a bit of an artistic streak and he doodles stickers on sticker paper sometimes. you can probably catch his tag around campus or even stuck to the latops of his close friends, it’s just a little man with a tv for a head.

WANTED CONNECTIONS.

HACKING JOBS – if you STILL need a hacker for any of your wild backstory connections, jem is a great bet. he’s been doing paid jobs for people professionally since he could type, and he’s sort of an ace at getting in and out without leaving a trace...and he’s no gossip. so, your secrets would be safe with him.

SMOKING BUDDIES – people that he can smoke up with, talk about life, talk about the bullshit of gallagher, but also people he can laugh with that don’t make him feel stressed or concerned about the future.

MUSIC MAKING BUDDIES – if your character makes music, maybe they can collaborate on something...we’re about to drop the hottest mixtape of all time right here at gallagher academy i will teach myself garageband for this shit...jk but maybe

EX ON BAD TERMS – someone he dated last year...i’m imagining it was their first year and things were really great for the first semester, but shit fell apart second semester along with the school. maybe all the drama on campus caused distance, maybe he wasn’t there for them when they needed it, or maybe they got jealous of the way he always prioritizes noah ? a combination of things, we can hash out the details since i know some of you had some pretty angsty things going on second sem, and maybe it’s awkward now because it feels like there’s unfinished biz.

EX ON GOOD TERMS / LOVERS TO FRIENDS – maybe someone that was a rebound and things didn’t really work and they saw that, maybe he wasn’t over his ex or whatever but they were able to stay friends ? it’s up to you how your muse feels about it but i want an ex that jem also has no hard feels about and actually is maybe sort of protective of them and cares a lot about them finding happiness, they bonded hardcore.

EX-FLING – idk maybe they were hooking up for a while and then one of them started seeing someone else or one of them caught feels so they don’t hook up any more but it was super fun when they did !! also down for it to have been like a summer fling and once the summer ended.

BROS – idk i would like for him to have a squad or something for him to just fuck around with <3 but it’s wholesome and they respect women

ONLINE FRIEND (ANONYMOUS) – he spent a lot of time on forums online and stuff so i’d love for him to have an online friend !! maybe cute if they just know each other by their screen names rn and we can do a bunch of text chats and maybe they both know they go to gallagher but they simply. haven’t met idk

ONLINE FRIENDS – also friends he met online that aren’t anonymous they could’ve met through any number of forums but probably have similar interests like music or hacking so they’re long time homies , someone he’s known almost as long as noah

ONE NIGHT STAND – self explanatory. maybe they’re super good friends and now it’s kind of awkward now and they want to get back to a place of normalcy but it’s simply not normal, maybe they fucked things up by breakin the tension on like. halloween or some shit.

FRIENDZONED – someone jem accidentally friendzoned and maybe he doesn’t even realize it himself but they had a thing for him and he really just didn’t realize it bc he can’t tell unless you spell it out for him.

CLASS RIVALS – someone who tries really hard and cares about class a bunch vs. jem who doesn’t give a fuck but he keeps making the grade without really trying, so they’re ? bitter about it ? and so the two really do not hit it off because of that and they go back and forth , i just rly want a classroom rivalry. maybe even this rivalry and them nagging him actually motivates to try in the class just to piss them off

ENEMY – this person shared a secret with jem and then it somehow got out on the gossip blog idk ! they think jem told and now they hate him.

I’m very interested in MSR dynamics when a possible Mulder/other hovers (threatens) in the background. Although that’s a recent thing for me ushered in by your excellently conceived and written The Whole Truth. Given how Mulder was, do you think Melissa Ephesian’s survival would have caused as much problems between M and S as Diana’s return did? Is this something you think you would like to write about at length? Or do you have 5 headcanons about TFWID, especially Mulder and soulmates.

I’m too lazy to break this into five headcanons so I’m just gong to give you my entire TFWID headcanon. Here goes.

I actually don’t believe Melissa was a romantic threat to MSR. Mostly because Mulder and Scully weren’t romantic at that point, at least as far as we’d been shown, but also because I believe Mulder was far more enamored with the idea of past lives being real rather than Melissa specifically. I, as well as every other person probably reading this, also refuse to believe he has any other romantic soulmate than Scully, at least in this life. More likely, as the episode portrays, he, and all of us, have many “soulmates” that play different roles to us in different lifetimes.

We all love the romantic aspect of MSR, but I always argue that’s just one facet of their relationship. They are so many things to each other besides romantic. They are friends, confidants, partners, intellectual equals, sources of comfort and support. All of the things. And the idea that they were all of these things to each other in past lives, in my mind, only strengthens their 1997 bond.

My interpretation of this episode is that the people we meet in our lives all come back as our “soulmates,” constantly, in different roles. What Melissa says in her regression (“We have come together in this life, in this time, only to meet in passing”) is key. Mulder’s purpose for meeting her in THIS life is to save all of those people.

Mulder is very receptive to hypnosis, as we already know, so it’s completely possible the past-life regression wouldn’t have worked on a nonbeliever. Out of the (presumably) hundreds of past lives Mulder has lived, in his regression he only goes to two. He and Melissa happened to be lovers in two of those lifetimes, but certainly not in this one (as time will bear out, that particular role in this lifetime is Scully) and who’s to say that was the case in every other lifetime?

He says during his hypnosis Samantha was his son. The CSM is there, as well. In one life, Scully was his father. In another life, she was his sergeant. In this current life, they are partners, friends (at this point.) But he also says the purpose of these reincarnations is to learn. After he says Scully is dead in the street, he then says: “He[Scully]’s gone on now, waiting for us... the souls come back together, different, but always together... again and again... to learn." Past Scully has gone on to the next lifetime waiting, waiting for him, until they learn what their souls want them to learn.

Fox Mulder is a romantic. Not in the widely accepted definition of the term, as he rarely is with any term, but he feels things. He has a feeling about the bunker. He has a feeling about Melissa from the moment he meets her. He feels that he’s responsible for every life in that temple because of this connection he shares with Melissa, even though Scully doesn’t think he should feel responsible.

Melissa, in response to his theory, tears up the picture of her past life. She doesn’t believe him and it disappoints him, not only because he’s Mulder and the idea of this being possible amazes him, but because he needs her to help him save those lives.

He's so upset throughout the episode at everyone’s refusal to believe: Skinner, Melissa, the other agents, especially Scully.

“You saw it, you heard it, why can’t you feel it?”

Their fight in the car is a rare thing to witness, and it still makes me uncomfortable when I watch it. Mulder gets frustrated with Scully frequently, but here he is lashing out. He feels responsible for saving those people and her inability to open her eyes to this possibility is slowing down their progress.

Ultimately he fails to save anyone because no one (including Melissa) believes him. At the end, when he comes across the group of lifeless bodies, he finds Melissa holding the torn picture (a symbol of her lack of belief) and cries because he failed. He’s Mulder, he believed where no one else did, and because they didn’t believe, he failed.

Some people think he’s crying because of Melissa specifically, because he “loves” her, but how could he? He doesn’t even know her. It’s like in Oubliette when he cried over Lucy, he’s crying because of what she represents: his failure. Like he believes he failed Melissa and everyone else. Like he believes he failed Samantha.

In any event, the scene where he questions Scully about all of it, she tells him none of it even matters because “[she] wouldn’t change a day.” They are exactly where they’re meant to be. Scully isn’t one to easily believe all of this past lives nonsense, but she does believe in Mulder. At the end of the day, that’s what matters to them both.

Anyway, all of this is to say that I don’t think Mulder had romantic feelings for Melissa at all. I think he had romantic feelings for the idea of past lives, though.

New headcanon, now one of my favourites:

“Something implied but never directly touched upon during Scully's abduction arc is in the interesting friendship Maggie and Mulder form during this time; it's implied that they supported each other through it. Between "Ascension" and "One Breath" Maggie goes from calling him "Agent Mulder" to "Fox", which almost no one calls him. He is there when Maggie views the headstone she ordered for Dana, and all through the horrible news in "One Breath". She even tells Mulder that he is welcome to sit with her and Melissa after they take Scully off of life support. She also calls him from the hospital when she's found, and either she or Melissa called him later in the episode to tell him that she had come out of her coma. This exchange is just... so lovely and loving, and expresses so much of what I find resonant about their relationship. Rewatch Thoughts:

SOSS: I love, love, love the headcanon espoused in many fics that Mulder’s ability to read Scully’s mind when she visited him in the hospital at the end of the previous episode and fully feel the force and depth of her love for him is part of what lets him move beyond some of his fears and insecurities and move forward with her this season.

I had remembered it as CSM giving Mulder this vision of another life to pacify him, but I guess it’s just a dream? His unconscious desire to be released from his guilt and the burdens of his quest (Deep Throat, Samantha) and to live a simpler life with a family (Diana, bleech).

Diana Fowley: I’m thinking, Agent Scully. I’m always thinking. I really like this line from her, because it jives with my view of her as very manipulative, but also hints at an inner life that we really haven’t seen, someone who has made compromises for reasons that we don’t understand.

I love Scully’s apartment, it looks so warm and homey. The stained glass windows. The nice big table in the kitchen. The low light from the lamps.

Scully yelling at Mulder is hands down the best part of the dream. Yaas Queen.

Scully’s tear reviving him feels symbolically significant but I can’t figure out what it’s supposed to mean... In fairytales terms it’s very close to revival by true love’s kiss, so that’s what I’m going with.

The symbolism of the little boy on the beach however is painfully obvious.

Scully admitting that she doesn’t know what to believe anymore has been a long time coming. Unfortunately since this is a mytharc episode we never follow up on what Scully does (or I guess the implication is, doesn’t do) with everything she learned about the craft.

Mulder doesn’t really give any reaction to the news about Diana’s death. Which opens it up to interpretation, and my headcanon is usually that between whatever he learned when he was able to read her mind and whatever he worked through in his dream of having a normal life and family with her, he’s able to make peace with their history. He knows she made her decisions with the full understanding of what she was doing and for her own reasons, and that they were not supposed to be together. He neither needs to feel guilty, or to wonder what if.

What is with Mulder and Scully and hallways? That long, lingering forehead kiss. Scully stroking his lips with her thumb. It’s utterly inexplicable that they have this important conversation in his doorway rather than going into his apartment. And then she just walks away. Maybe she has to get to work. Or maybe that would be her excuse, but really that moment was a LOT, and she needs time to process.
