There's so much fearmongering about AI and robots and the inevitable technological future closing off all human work but I think it is far more likely only a small subset of computerized work is going to remain in twenty to forty years. Part of this is my experience on the ~ i n s i d e ~ as a former minor tech executive, part of it is the experience of my extended family in Japan after their crash in the 90s. Do people realize that so much of the AI/robot/digitization stuff is subsidized market front running? Basically a group of wealthy companies get together, decide a market they want to corner, define the budget and timeline, and get to work annhilating the existing market so they can swoop in with their replacement (ideally as a monopsony provider a la google or amazon). If an 'industry' is big enough, like very fast chips, governments will even get involved to block competitor countries' products to secure their national champions.
The biggest problem with all of this (it has been going on longer than I've been alive, like forty five years now) is that it has chewed up so much personal livelihood everywhere that enacted these policies that only like 15% or less of the people in those countries can buy the products produced. Because most people don't have the disposable cash any longer to buy the expensive computerized crap except under duress, like when they have to get a new car or new computer. I enjoy playing and making video games too, but I know why so many are in the industry: it is one of the few remaining options to be an independent producer because it requires minimal tools and can be bootstrapped solo by not paying for your own labor.
So I think what is actually going to happen is a big shift back to hyper-local production, of everything, and there will be an emphasis on employing as many people as possible (so taxes can be collected) instead of 'efficiency' and 'productivity'. It will take a lot longer than the dummies in charge think because decades of neoliberal looting will take decades to repair. And this is going to collide with wild weather changes and power outages (another reason why the data centers and robot future aren't going to be widespread). But it will be cool because there will be a return of actual diversity of stuff that is created instead of the same four companies churning out copies of the same stuff. I like to imagine things like regionally-specific mp3 player styles in the same way we describe old pottery. There will be an assumption that the AI and mass scale tools are just there for plagiarism and theft so you'll have to actually go in person to do coolhunting, and it will be impossible to scale up or influence off it because all the platform middlemen will be gone.

Six years late, but apparently that is what was needed so I could not fail miserably at trying to draw everyone's favourite Detroit machine I am obsessed, spent his week reading fanfics and watching various clips but still, as I'm a person of one fanart per character I think you shouldn't expect more Connor xD A shame really, cause it seems I'm just starting to learn how to draw him but I don't want to get my own hopes up. Anyways, I'm free now, I contributed to the fandom after all these years.

the idea of rping with an ai is actually so baffling to me
you mean you’d rather rp with a bot that you can’t randomly break character with and giggle and scream about characters/situations/literally anything with??? that just feels so boring and lifeless
you’re not communicating with someone who shares your interests, you’re communicating with something that was programmed to talk like the character. theres no connection there so like what’s the point???
i’m bad at explaining things but hopefully you get the point. basically it’s dumb as hell

The thing that's really getting to me about AI art is that this is just megacorporations' way of to avoid paying people because why bother going through the hassle of paying an artist for their work when you can just use an AI to steal it for you.
We all know about the starving artist stereotype and the fact that artists are starving isn't because of the artist but it's because of their clients. So many people have divorced the art from the artist and never give a damn about them and so many times you see interactions that are boiled down to:
>> Client: I want *something so elaborate that it'd take a professional a month to make* in a week >>Artist: Okay, that'll be $100 >>Client: ExCUUSE ME
To use a real example of this
Tumblr media
Only $3,000?! That's laughable and insulting especially considering just how much money Fortnite makes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Megacorporations have always done their best to mass produce and undercut their workers but art has always been a huge problem. You can literally see the budget with art. But now with AI, it doesn't matter. A robot can now steal art from an artist that’s “too expensive”. This isn't even an over reaction, either, because it's already happening. Not only did these artists not consent to this, some of them even denied for it to be used.
This isn't the same thing as inspiration for humans. When humans use art as inspiration, it changes, grows, and evolves with their skill but a robot is just stuck like this. They just cut and paste work from something that took someone years of sleepless nights to do.
BTW, if you're an artist and a corporation does steal your work, you're not completely screwed (under US law). This reel does a good job of explaining what you can do if someone reuploads your work even if you didn't file for copyright.
Also, as someone who used to have an AI generated profile picture, I'd like to apologize. I always just saw AI as a fun toy and nothing more. I never thought AI generated pictures would actually replace artists.

Okay, look, they talk to a Google rep in some of the video clips, but I give it a pass because this FREE course is a good baseline for personal internet safety that so many people just do not seem to have anymore. It's done in short video clip and article format (the videos average about a minute and a half). This is some super basic stuff like "What is PII and why you shouldn't put it on your twitter" and "what is a phishing scam?" Or "what is the difference between HTTP and HTTPS and why do you care?"
It's worrying to me how many people I meet or see online who just do not know even these absolute basic things, who are at constant risk of being scammed or hacked and losing everything. People who barely know how to turn their own computers on because corporations have made everything a proprietary app or exclusive hardware option that you must pay constant fees just to use. Especially young, somewhat isolated people who have never known a different world and don't realize they are being conditioned to be metaphorical prey animals in the digital landscape.
Anyway, this isn't the best internet safety course but it's free and easy to access. Gotta start somewhere.
Here's another short, easy, free online course about personal cyber security (GCFGlobal.org Introduction to Internet Safety)
Bonus videos:

"He didn't have anything to hide, he didn't do anything wrong, anything illegal, and yet he was still punished."

"At least 60% use their name or date of birth as a password, and that's something you should never do."

"Crossing the road safely is a basic life skill that every parent teaches their kids. I believe that cyber skills are the 21st century equivalent of road safety in the 20th century."

So... this post is going to be quite different from my usual "blorbo-posting" and fandom related shenanigans, but I really want to put this out there, make my position clear, and maybe alert others who haven't heard this unfortunate news yet.
I am an avid horror film fan. I am always seeking out any and every new release. So I was eagerly anticipating getting to see Late Night with the Devil when it came out today.
Unfortunately, now that the film's creators themselves have confirmed that A.I. art was used within the film, I absolutely will not be supporting this movie.
It's hugely disappointing to me that a movie - and an independent movie at that! - would resort to using generative A.I. in this manner and I'm appalled at the creators of the film for doing this.
And I've already seen the bandwagon counter-arguments on reddit, so let me be clear: I don't care how "minor" the presence of the art is in the film. I care that this was done at all. These are the types of "baby-steps" that have led to A.I. being such a prolific cancer already. For it to infiltrate actual, studio-funded and released films, now?! That's too far. And for the argument of "Oh, its presence in the film is so small! It's really not that big of a deal!" I would respond that commissioning/hiring an artist to create something so "small" wouldn't have been a big deal in the grand scheme of the film's production budget, and would have been a HUGE deal for that lucky artist to get their work to be shown in a feature film. And it also wouldn't have supported the blatant art theft that is generative A.I., so that's a pretty big deal too.
Another response I'm seeing is: "How sad these people [aka: people like me who refuse to support the film in theaters because of this shit] are going to refuse to see this great film over something so minor!" To which I would say: I'm upset too, to be quite honest. I'm upset that greed and laziness in such a "minor" part of this film is going to keep me from seeing a movie that - for all intents and purposes - looks like a lot of passion was put into from the cast and crew and really looks like a horror film that would be right up my alley. But it is more important for me to stand on this principle: I absolutely refuse to support any project that contains ANY use of A.I., no matter how "insignificant" it might be. Because of course it will start small. A title card here, a poster in the background of a scene there. But is it "insignificant" or "small" to the artists whose work this A.I. is scrapping to generate its images? No, and you can be certain that it will also not be a "small" matter to other studios that see this and think that they can incorporate this abhorent technology into their films as well. A "minor" use of A.I. is a slippery fucking slope and it is NOT one that I will support or encourage.

As a disabled person, I'm so disgusted by what happened on the @whumptober blog recently and how they're trying to sweep it under the rug.
Discussions about AI aside, deleting replies from disabled people speaking out against the rampant ableism you're spreading and that is happening in your comments/reblogs, is so fucking gross and I can't believe they did that. Like, I used to love the whump community but now it just feels incredibly unsafe.
The whump community has always been accused of being ableist and I hate that now I can't even argue against it because some of the biggest names in this community apparently are really fucking chill with silencing disabled people for speaking out against that behavior.
These mods and anybody who is supporting that behavior can go fuck themselves <3

AI "artists" will look an actual artist, who has put years of practice, energy and time into their craft, dead in the eye, and go," We're the same!"
No, you're not. A person who has spent actual time improving their craft and a person who paid 5 dollars to an AI art generator are not on the same level.
If your only medium is AI, then YOU ARE NOT AN ARTIST.

goddd so i’m seeing a pin on character ai right and you know me, i’m the biggest hater of it and will make sure you know how annoying it is and how much i hate it and why each time it’s brought up that you’re using it, and these corny ass comments and these honestly sad ones… “why do you care if i talk to ai i’m coping” “i can’t vent to anybody so i just use my comfort characters” like that is very sad and i’m sorry your life is like that. DO NOT SHARE PERSONAL INFO WITH “““““AI”””””” THAT SHOULDNT BE A CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENT 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️ really annoys me too the “it’s harmless” “they get a bit freaky tho-” you have no idea how bad i want to explain the issues with both those statements using a fucking picture book

Given the new wave of AI BS that's coming to tumblr I'm not going to be posting full chapters here anymore. I'm still going to be posting snippets and tags when I update for people who've asked, but no more full chapters or oneshots. Unsure of drabbles, but most likely those are going to AO3 as well. There's no way to completely avoid AI scrapping but I'd rather make them fight to take my things rather than handing them over on a silver fucking platter

Gonna be real, I don't like seeing AI written fics either...
If you support artists fighting AI please extend that support to writers as well...
It might just be a fun little gimmicky thing (trust me I know I played around with AI writing in the early days too...mostly just to make crack stuff) but you posting positively about it is almost definitely going to inspire other people to go try it out.

Okay that looks like some sort of AI edit, yeah.
Could also just be a copy or a photoshop edit but the weird random bits (like one of the hair strands glowing ??? And none of the highlight colors working well, plus parts of the clothes on the left just being randomly transparent-) makes me think it’s definitely AI of some sort.
So now they’re doing blatant art theft AND ai art… sigh.

Just... the fact that it's, "We sold your data to AI companies!" and they didn't even pretend for 5 seconds that it was a profit share or revenue stream users could opt into really says it all.
